SAILORS MUST reach Alaskan finish line under wind or human power.

S
ailors from Nanaimo and Gabriola Island will be among those racing to Alaska in an boat race in June. Qualifying for the first-ever Race to Alaska is set for June 4 from Port Townsend, Wash., to Victoria. The main race runs from Victoria to Ketchikan, Alaska, beginning June 7 and $10,000 awaits the winner of the 1,207-kilometre, non-motorized boat race. Team Y Triamoto use a sevenmetre trimaran sailboat and for crew member David McCallum, it is right up his alley as a sailing enthusiast. He said it’s the chance of a lifetime. McCallum and team don’t plan to stop, save for inclement weather, surviving on dehydrated food and sleeping in shifts. Fatigue could become a factor. “That’s going to be a big deal, absolutely, but that’s why it’s an adventure race,” said McCallum. “If that stuff wasn’t an issue, everybody would be doing it.” Wayne Gorrie, a founder of the Van Isle 360 yacht race, will also be in the Race to Alaska. His Team MOB Mentality will use an 8.5-metre trimaran, christened the Mail Order Bride. Success in the race will be dependent on weather and while that can be unpredictable, Gorrie said his team is prepared. “What we would like to see is lots of wind – my boat is optimized for big winds,” said Gorrie. “Some boats are optimized for very light air ... we’re not going to turn this into a rowing race however.”

Third councillor quits from Lantzville district
CHRIS BUSH/THE NEWS BULLETIN
Dave McCallum is packing his gear for the first-ever Race to Alaska, a non-motorized boat race from Victoria to Ketchikan, Alaska. Qualifying happens June 4.
Another Lantzville councillor has stepped down. Mayor Colin Haime confirmed that Coun. David Scott handed in a letter of resignation, joining councillors Rod Negrave and Jennifer Millbank, who stepped down in late April. Scott was among a group of four councillors who sent a letter to the community in April outlining frustrations over the treatment of staff at district meetings. Haime said Scott’s resignation isn’t unexpected. “He’s been an individual who’s been on council before ... it’s disappointing that after only five months of a mandate, an individual basically decides to move on, but for our purposes, because we have a byelection coming anyway, better now than later,” said Haime. Scott did not respond to a request for comment but in his resignation letter said in his eight years as a district trustee and during his term on council, he’s never experienced such dysfunction. “I am a strong
believer in the democratic process, however, I believe that there are significant issues around democracy in our community that I can no longer tolerate,” Scott said. Wi t h t h e t h re e resignations in less than a month, Haime addressed suggestions that council is dysfunctional. “Just like the other two individuals that resigned, no specifics were provided as to what their concerns are,” Haime said. “So if, as leaders, that they can’t decide the direction of council themselves as a majority ... then I’m not sure they’d be serving the public to continue.” Quorum for district council is four councillors, which is the number at which council currently stands. No byelection date has been set. An item was on last night’s meeting agenda to address the issue. Haime said the byelection is estimated to cost taxpayers $20,000. Chief administrative officer Twyla Graff and financial services director Jedha Holmes have also resigned recently. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

“Shopping buggies end up here on a regular basis,” Drew said. “We find syringes, condoms, lubricant. We were told that the bike police would be coming through here once a day, but we’ve only ever seen them once.” Residents help clean up the alley and build higher fences. “Our next door neighbour was dumping out her compost and some guy was staring at her while touching himself,” D re w s a i d . “ S h e thought he was just going to the bathroom until he started talking to her.” She planted prickle bushes and blackberries behind her property. By March, Drew was complaining heavily to the city for help. Randy Churchill, city manager of bylaw services, is aware of the situation. “What you’ve got is a hot route associated to … some houses there that have drug activity going on –

For Nathan Drew the final straw was a discarded syringe his friend’s two-year-old was found playing with in their backyard in the 500 block of Kennedy Street last week. The alley behind his home is plagued by drug use, the sex trade, thefts and discarded trash, condoms and syringes. “ We f o u n d m y friend’s two-year-old with a syringe that was stuffed under the fence,” Drew said. “She thought it was a magic marker and was trying to draw with it.” Thefts happen regularly. Drew caught a man prowling his back yard with a flashlight recently. Ten metres of chain link fence bordering a commercial property was even stolen.

two or three of the houses,” he said. One house was closed recently and another torn down. Brambles and fencing in the alley will be removed and surrounding properties bordering the E&N Railway tracks are about to be cleared. “If you were to turn the page and all of a sudden it’s 2017, you’d have the next development area that’s going to build out and an extension of more nice properties that’s very close and walkable to the downtown, but right now it’s not there,” Churchill said. John Horn, city social planner, said six new drop boxes along the railway tracks will hopefully encourage drug users to properly dispose of used syringes. “We’re hoping that catches those individuals who are the most likely to be the users who are discarding the syringes,” Horn said.

“We’re not young jocks that can row 24/7 non stop. We will row, though, if we need to,” said Gorrie. Quill Goldman, owner of Barefoot Wooden Boats on Gabriola Island, and his Team Barefoot Wooden Boats, will be joining the other teams in the quest to Ketchikan, but will be doing so in a customized 5.8-metre boat. “It’s a bit of a hybrid, sort of a building technique that I’ve been using for a while,” said Goldman. “It’s got a plywood bottom and tree wood topsides, so it’s basically like a modern high-performance boat below the waterline and looks like a traditional boat above.” The race rulebook isn’t thick, but boats are not allowed to have engines and racers must travel without the aid of support boats. They must also pass through two waypoints at Seymour Narrows and Bella Bella. For more information on the race, please visit www.r2ak.com.

Group happy with result While Nanaimo Science and Sustainability Society didn’t take home the grand prize at a social enterprise competition Wednesday, its executive director is still happy with a consolation award. Tofino-Ucluelet Culinary Guild took home $50,000 in cash and in-kind support at a Dragon’s Denstyle competition at the Social Enterprise Catalyst Gala in Nanaimo, but Liz DeMattia, science and stainability society executive director, said her organization still took home $5,000, business support, a green certificate and a one-year membership to the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce. “We’ll use this money to increase our capacity in terms of our website, our database and our registration process, so that we can handle more of the potential users in the foreseeable future,” said DeMattia. The experience also included making a presentation on the organization to a threejudge panel. October 13 – December 15, 2004

Break-and-enter nets jail sentence
Two weeks of breaking into homes has landed a Nanaimo man a year-long stay in prison. According to Nanaimo RCMP, Timothy Joseph Dafoe, 31, of Nanaimo, was sentenced to one year in jail at Nanaimo provincial court last week for breaking into homes in the 2000 block of Labieux Road between May 3-12. Police said forensic evidence, eye-witness reports, surveillance video and police knowledge of
known criminals led to Dafoe’s arrest on May 14. In each break-and-enter, only jewelry was taken, which was converted into cash at local pawn shops. Much of the jewelry stolen was recovered during a search of Dafoe’s home and returned to its owners. In the majority of the breakins, entry was gained through unlocked doors or windows.

Property crime suspect jumps into river to avoid capture
I
TylEr foNg faces charges of dangerous driving from incident.
Nanaimo police arrested a 31-year-old man Thursday afternoon, but only after the suspect fought with police, rammed several police cars and jumped into the Nanaimo
River to evade arrest. According to an RCMP press release, Nanaimo Mounties were tipped off by Island District General Investigation Section members monitoring the suspect, identified as Tyler Fong, who was wanted for driving offences and property crimes, that he was driving a vehicle near University Village shopping centre in Harewood.
When police tried to block his car, the suspect rammed police vehicles and sped off. An RCMP helicopter tracked Fong’s car as it travelled at high speed southbound on the Nanaimo Parkway where police deployed a spike belt, deflating the vehicle’s tires. The suspect abandoned the car near the Duke Point overpass where he made attempts to get other
drivers to pick him up. When police moved in again, Fong jumped into the Nanaimo River and injured his ankle. He was finally apprehended when he swam to shore. He was held in custody to appear in Nanaimo provincial court Friday to face previous charges for offences allegedly committed in Ladysmith and Duncan and additional recommended
charges from Thursday’s chase. Those charges, including five counts of assaulting a police officer with a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and evading police were sworn against Fong Friday. Fong remains in custody until he appears before a provincial court judge who will decide whether he will be released.

Kids learn bike mechanics

OPEraTiON GENEraTiON at John Barsby school brings students and community members together on project. By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN
J
ohn Barsby Community School students are profiting from a bicycle repair program where volunteers show students how to bring old bikes back to life in a classroom converted into a workshop. Students of all skill levels and aptitudes are welcome and the most dedicated get to re-build a bike for themselves. The idea for the program, called Operation Generation, came from Island Integrated Counselling in 2012. Tyler Walker, manager and president of Hub City Cycles Community Co-op, has run the program, paid for by Island Integrated Counselling and Hub City Cycles, since January 2013 when it started with about eight adult volunteers. “That’s where the name Operation Generation came from, because it was youth and seniors working together to learn about bikes and bike mechanics,” Walker said. Most of the bikes come from Surrey B.C., purchased at police auctions by a Rotary club and shipped free of charge by Diamond Delivery of Nanaimo. The students select which ones are repairable and strip the rest for usable parts. “The primary purpose
of this program is to get kids on bikes and to teach them about bike mechanics and about biking and how to work as a team by coming and volunteering here,” Walker said. Students committed to building the program get to build and keep their own bike and are given a helmet, lock and lights. About 12 students have earned bikes. The program also has a mountain bike club that gets together Wednesday afternoons. Cody Park, a Grade 8 student, joined in March. “[Bikes] are pretty much completely interesting, but the most interesting thing, I would say, is when they first invented them. It was really cool because it’s a non-motorized vehicle that you can drive,” Park said. Walker wants more students and committed mentors to join the program and ultimately put the students in charge of running it. “I really see a lot of value in the youth working here and in the youth being involved in the program in a much deeper way,” Walker said. When Operation Generation started it included a baking class, video club and tutoring. Money shortages ended those, but organizers would like to restart them to engage more students and possi-

The Member of Parliament who had her private member’s bill to remedy derelict vessels die on the floor of the House of Commons is looking to pass the issue to her successor. Nanaimo-Cowichan MP Jean Crowder’s Bill C-638 would have put responsibility of receiver of wrecks on the Canadian Coast Guard. Crowder, who is not running in the next federal election, said Sheila Malcolmson, Nanaimo-Ladysmith NDP candidate and former Islands Trust chairwoman, will take up the cause. Both said the upcoming federal election could have a bearing on the direction of derelict vessels. A framework proposed by Union of B.C. Municipalities and various Vancouver Island local governments would be ideal, according to Malcolmson. Legislation would use a transfer around vessel registration fees to create a pool of money. If there is a vessel at risk of becoming a problem, money would be available to deal with it immediately.
Malcolmson said the second phase of work would be to identify the responsible owner and utilize government staff to collect, so it becomes a user-pay formula. “Said another way, is to be able to bring forward legislation that would include a tool on how to have a fund available to take quick action, and then a mechanism to ensure that those responsible for the pollution get the bill at the end of the day. “But there’s no delay trying to track down who will ultimately receive that invoice because the thing with derelict vessels, whether it’s from a tourism or a pollution, or a public safety point of view, the importance is fast action and that is what has been missing here,” said Malcolmson. Crowder was disappointed about the bill’s fate and said there were some misconceptions about financing. “What my bill was doing was simply shifting the receiver of wrecks, which is already in place and already spending money on it, to the coast guard.” reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Election race well underway
One of the side effects of having fixed election dates in Canada, a move that was pioneered by the B.C. Liberals when they first were elected here in 2001, is that campaigns have become much, much longer. In fact, having a short campaign period is considered a disaster by most political handlers now. One of the criticisms made of the Alberta Progressive Conservatives (after the fact, of course), is that they only had a 28-day period in which to campaign. Premier Jim Prentice in fact broke the fixed election date law and called an election a year early. That didn’t go so well. The federal election campaign has actually been underway for some time – certainly since the beginning of the year. While Parliament is still sitting and passing laws, MPs and candidates of all stripes are hard at work getting ready for the October election. Here in Nanaimo, the major parties all have candidates already in place. Because of the long campaign period, voters need to treat almost everything said or done by political parties, and particularly by their leaders, with a great deal of skepticism. NDP leader Thomas Mulcair was in the area recently and Elizabeth May has been very visible in Nanaimo in recent weeks. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has also made a number of visits to B.C. this spring. While they haven’t been election rallies, his visits are directly connected to the campaign. In particular, the time he spent with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Surrey, Vancouver and several Ontario venues was invaluable. Liberal leader Justin Trudeau will almost certainly head west in the coming months as well. Voters aren’t too engaged in federal politics right now, but the parties most certainly are.

the footprint of Toronto and surrounding suburbs grew by 26 per cent to accommodate about 1.1 million new residents. Between 2001 and 2011 it expanded by just 10 per cent to accommodate roughly the same number of newcomers. Although the Greenbelt Plan is curbing sprawl and protecting farmland and green space, it’s far from secure – and the remaining 80 per cent of the region’s farmland and natural systems remain unprotected. Proposed highways, pipelines, hydro corridors and sprawling, car-dependent subdivisions could fragment natural and agricultural systems and enable leapfrog development outside the greenbelt’s borders – with extensive land speculation in expectation of the type of sprawl these plans were intended to prevent. Canada’s towns and cities are at a crossroads. One path leads to continued low-density, sprawling urban expansion, with endless pavement, long commutes and traffic jams, and the high social and ecological costs of wasteful forms of urban design. The other path ends sprawl by creating compact, higher-density communities with mid-rise housing and access to public transit, bike paths and walking trails, surrounded by precious farmland and green spaces. What kind of cities do you want?

Lantzville being harmed by council resignations To the Editor,
Re: Lantzville council exodus continues with third resignation, May 22. Poor Lantzville has been kneecapped by two new councillors and one returning incumbent who discovered within a few months of taking their oath of office, that the new council is “dysfunctional.” Three out of seven – fascinating. Could it be that the two newly elected members and one incumbent were less than sincere in campaigning on a desire to truly serve their community and work together for the benefit of all its citizens? This is not a new problem. The previous Lantzville council was faction-ridden. There were toxic animosities among specific councillors toward others, evident at practically every meeting. The new council began its term with a carryover of some old grudges, and
the added friction of strong opposition to the new mayor overwhelmingly elected on a commitment to seek an improved water agreement with Nanaimo, and financial prudence. What should have been confidentially handled senior staff complaints quickly became public through improper leaks of information. There’s something reminiscent of American Tea Party obstructionism going on in our tiny community. Lantzville voters have been terribly ill-served by some freshly elected councillors whose resignations are for reasons that are far from clear. We need a council that will strive to co-operate, unite, and serve the community – respectfully give administrative direction, and leave personality conflicts behind.

Higher levels of government must step in to preserve the Morden Mine, says letter writer.
Morden Mine worth saving To the Editor,
Re: City’s coal history should be preserved, Opinion, May 19. What can be done to save the Morden Mine? The federal and provincial governments must be involved. Friends of Morden Mine need help and
money and support. So, do we march in the street? How do we get the government to pay attention and move forward to save this important part of not just Nanaimo history, but Canadian history?

Alberta election result could be be damaging to economy To the Editor,
Re: Alberta vote is a shakeup, Editorial, May 19. I doubt Alberta’s election result will “prove to be a seismic shift in Canadian politics” despite the federal NDP’s Tom Mulcair telling everyone it will. Obviously, the Alberta NDP’s promise to raise corporate taxes had more appeal to voters than Jim
Prentice’s plan to raise income taxes. The problem with Rachel Notley’s idea is that capital, being the most mobile of all commodities, started leaving the province right after the election. If corporations don’t like the tax structure in one place they’ll move to another. While that may benefit Saskatchewan and B.C., guess to whom Notley will have to
turn to raise revenue? Notley’s favouring one oil pipeline over another is also odd and although she wants more of Alberta’s oil processed in Canada, she doesn’t mention the billions of dollars required to build even one more refinery. Besides, refineries operate on the thinnest of margins and would have to pass the costs on. Because the mar-

Cari Burdett aims to reach new audiences with debut album.
EVENT DEEMED a success by Tourism Nanaimo. BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN

Cowichan Valley-based singer Cari Burdett will be performing at the Harbour City Theatre on May 29.
BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN
Singer Cari Burdett knows all about overcoming obstacles. There was the time she lost her voice and almost gave up on singing. Then there was the time she was involved in a major car accident that took place just before she was about to take part in a singing competition. “At the time it was shattering,” Burdett said. Despite all of the obstacles that life has thrown at her, Burdett has managed to keep on singing. “I couldn’t stop singing,” Burdett said. “I kept thinking in a way that life was trying tell me to stop singing but actually it is more about how do I embrace this gift.” On Friday (May 29), after spending years living abroad, Burdett will be performing at the Harbour City Theatre
alongside pianist Miles Black, violinist Richard Moody and bassit Sean Drabbit. Her stop in Nanaimo is part of a tour to promote her debut album Magnolia, which she released earlier this year. Burdett, who is a graduate of McGill University and the Royal Academy of Music in the United Kingdom, was raised on Vancouver Island and has been involved with music for years. “There was a time in my life that I remember vividly singing in the music festivals and being truly moved by the audience,” Burdett said. “I realized that the power of music was so great that they would often cry or laugh when I sang and I was deeply moved and touched.” Burdett’s album, Magnolia, contains 12 tracks and has been described as “dramatic gypsy cabaret” and features Burdett singing in five different
languages, including Spanish, Italian and Swedish. “I have gypsy background ... and that sense of travel and passion for languages and arts is really who I am,” Burdett said. “I wanted to reach a broader audience with this album and so I included popular songs with some new arrangements.” Burdett’s tour will conclude at the end of the month in Duncan and she is currently in the process of scheduling an eastern tour. “I will be doing a tour in Ontario and Quebec in the fall and attending showcases,” she said. Burdett performs at the Harbour City Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advanced and can be purchased at Fascinating Rhythm, 51 Commercial St., or $20 at the door. For more information, please visit www.cariburdett.com. arts@nanaimobulletin.com
There was no shortage of entertainment in the Harbour City this past March. From pirates to performers, one newly formed festival seemed to have it all. Festival Nanaimo, which took place throughout the month of March, featured performances by Jim Byrnes, Barney Bentall, John Mann, Joëlle Rabu and the Irish Rovers as well as family-oriented events such as PirateFest. “I think it was a success as a first event,” said Margot Holmes, Festival Nanaimo coorganizer. She said the Irish Rovers, Rabu and PirateFest were among the most popular events during the festival. Organizers received $5,000 from Tourism Nanaimo’s Tourism Development Fund to stage the festival. “It is not a huge amount of money,” Holmes said. “Everything else was funded through partnerships and sponsorships with community people and ticket sales.” Tourism Nanaimo executive director of destination management Lesley Anderson said she was pleased with how Festival Nanaimo turned out, adding that it was “worth every penny.”
“In their first year they did a fantastic job of putting together a great lineup of performances and also aggregating information about all the different activities and things that were going on in the month of March in Nanaimo,” Anderson said. Although neither Festival Nanaimo nor Tourism Nanaimo know exactly how much tourism was generated, both say that hotels saw an increase in guests in March. “We don’t track down to a festival level at this point,” Anderson said. “We are working on how we are going to do that going forward.” While Festival Nanaimo experienced plenty of successes, there were also disappointments such as cancelled events and lower than expected attendance at others. “In the end we did about seven signature events, a couple of them we cancelled,” Holmes said. Among the events that were cancelled was Yukon-based rockers Speed Control, who were scheduled to participate in a week-long music camp as well as a performance. Both Holmes and Anderson pointed out that with any first time festival, there are going to be successes and failures. “These festivals and events take awhile to grow,” Anderson said. Festival Nanaimo is scheduled to take place again next March. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Claudia Lohmann has always been surrounded by art. “My father was an artist. So I grew up with my father’s art all around,” Lohmann said.“My sister is a potter back in Germany and my brother has a photo studio.” However, despite being surrounded by art her whole life, it was only a few years ago that Lohmann began painting. “I met a younger artist here in Canada and he motivated me,” she said. Since then, Lohmann has been creating a unique geometric style artwork, which she calls “imaginative geometric abstract.” “Art is so normal for me,” Lohmann said. “Without art life would be totally boring.” Lohmann will be just one of 26 different artists from across Vancouver Island, whose work will be featured at the A Brush With Spring art show, which runs this weekend (May 29-31).
The art show is organized by the Nanaimo chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists and those involved in the show were selected through a lengthy jury process. Lohmann was born in Germany and moved to Canada with her family in 1995 in an effort to be closer to the ocean. “My husband and I always talked about when we are older we’d immigrate somewhere where the ocean is,” she said. “I never regretted it.” Lohmann, who lives just outside of Nanaimo, mainly paints using acrylic colours on wood. Her work is often filled with geometric patterns and shapes. “It is very defined with where new colours begin and new colours end,” she said. “I paint mostly on wood and so when I am done I go over all of the different lines.” In addition to her paintings, Lohmann

also creates smaller accessory pieces using recycled material in a process that she calls “upcycling.” “I find thing and fix them up,” she said. Her pieces include a chess set made from an old piano chair, cutting boards candle holders and picture frames. When it comes to creating art, Lohmann says the feeling she gets is the same as taking a holiday. “It is just like having a holiday ... it is
relaxing,” Lohmann said. “A day of painting is a perfect day.” The art show takes place inside the Harbour Room at the Dorcester Hotel, 70 Church St., this weekend (May 29-31). The show opens on Friday (May 29) at 1 p.m. For more information, including a full list of show times and artist information, please visit http://nanaimofca. blogspot.ca. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

He won the Canadian Professional Boxing Council’s Western Canadian middleweight title. McPhee won the CPBC Western Canadian bantamweight belt with her win, and the schoolteacher said “my students are going to be excited to see this for show and tell.” She said the victory feels really good because it was a fight she knew would be difficult, and was. “That’s what this sport is about, is getting in and being challenged and I love the challenge,” she said. The 63-year-old Racette said he wasn’t allowed to fight because he was too excited and his blood pressure was high. “I’ve been looking forward to this for five years, I’ve been training for the last year and a half. I’m ready to go,” Racette said. “Am I disappointed? Yeah.”
MORROW, MCPHEE win championships, Racette fails medical. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
Fight fans didn’t get the quantity they were expecting, but they did get quality. The Rumble at the Rink boxing card in Nanaimo on Saturday night featured just three bouts, as Gordy Racette failed his final medical half an hour before bell time. The other three bouts were crowd-pleasers. Qualicum Beach’s Aubrey (Bam Bam) Morrow scored a seventh-round TKO over Paul Bzdel in the main event, Alisah McPhee defeated Peggy Maerz by unanimous decision and Dashon (Flyboy) Johnson beat Chris Aucoin, also by unanimous decision. The main event was the fight of the night. Morrow bruised and battered Bzdel for four rounds, then got opened up himself in the fifth, reversing the momentum. It led to a bloody and dramatic finish that saw Morrow

Pirates edge Eagles

BALL TEAM bounces back on sunday.
BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN
The Nanaimo Pirates found a way to bounce back, as usual. The Hub City Paving Pirates defeated the Victoria Eagles 5-4 on Sunday at Serauxmen Stadium after losing the early game 10-3. “It was good to see the guys kind of man up…” said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager. “The second game of doubleheaders we usually play better and that’s something we need to correct because we want to start taking series now.”
Juniors beaten by PoCo Saints The Nanaimo Timbermen junior A lacrosse team was upset on the road Sunday. The team fell 9-5 against the Por t Coquitlam Saints. Brett Hawrys scored two goals for Nanaimo. The T-men play the Delta Islanders on Sunday (May 31) at 4 p.m. at Duncan’s Island Savings Centre.
Rogers said Sam Baker’s steady pitching led the way in Sunday’s win. Baker said Nanaimo’s defence started making more plays as the day went on, and the bats came around. “I think our team has got a lot of gutsy guys. We’ve got a lot of leaders on the bench,” Baker said. He struck out six over 6 2/3 and Cole Warken went 3-for-4 at the plate. In the early game, the Pirates led 3-0 most of the way before things went wrong. Nanaimo split with the Victoria Mariners the day before on the road, winning 6-5 and then losing 5-1. North Rainey was the winning pitcher that day, with Shawn
