Dust up over Minister’s visit

Peter MacKay comes to Kootenay Columbia but not too many people knew about it, say opponents C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

COURTESY LINDSAY PARK SCHOOL

There has been a flurry of activity at Lindsay Park as Grade 3 students prepare for the annual Science Fair this week. Students have been busy planting, nurturing and growing a variety of plants, researching and creating information boards and preparing a food sample representing the fruits of their labour. The excitement, pride and knowledge these students gain is evident in the excitement and pride they take in presenting their projects. A special thank you to Mrs. Driscoll for the time and effort she puts into facilitating this wonderful event.

Cougars, bears with cubs spotted All sorts of animals are out and about, many with young C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor

On Thursdsay morning Convervation Offi-

cers with dogs were looking for two cougars who were spotted on Sunflower Hill on St. Mary Lake Road. Sunflower Hill is part of the Kimberley Nature Park and within city limits. Also on Thursday two bears with very young cubs were seen at the

Marysville end of the Volksmarch trail. It is time to start being very aware of your surroundings and attractants as animals are active in and around Kimberley and many have young to protect. Deer are fawning now as well, and does can be

quite aggressive. The fawning season generally runs May through July. Report all negative wildlife encounters to: Conservation Officer service 24-hour wildlife hotline. Dial toll free 1-877952-7277 or 1-877-952RAPP. In an emergency dial 911.

While cougars generally stay to the edges of town and are not easy to spot, the same is not true for bears. Residents are reminded to manage their attractants, not just garbage but barbecues, birdfeeders, and as the summer progresses, fruit trees.

Kootenay Columbia MP David Wilks was pleased to host Justice Minister Peter MacKay on a visit to the riding last weekend, but his riding opponents in the upcoming federal election have a question — why didn’t anyone know about it in advance? According to a press release from Wilks’ office, the events included meetings and discussions on some important Justice-led initiatives that both Minister MacKay and MP Wilks have worked hard on and supported in the House of Commons and through MP Wilks’ work on the Justice Committee. “One such example, is the Anti-terrorism Act, 2015, which will provide law enforcement with the tools they need to keep Canadians safe from the threats of terrorists, while ensuring that fundamental rights are protected, through judicial over-sight. “I was pleased to host Minister MacKay in Cranbrook this past Saturday, to meet with constituents on matters of importance to our community,” Wilks said. “The safety and protection of my constituents has always been a driving force for my involvement in the community. Cranbrook Curling Club looks for Grand Slam

Will curling elite compete in Cranbrook again? Arne Petryshen

The City of Cranbrook and the Cranbrook Curling Club are hoping that 2017 will be a year that kicks off with a world class curling event in the city. The two groups are close to signing an agreement to put in a bid for the 2017 Sportsnet Grand Slam of Curling which is planned for Jan. 4 - 8, 2017. Bill Brock, president of the Cranbrook Curling Club said the event will have a great draw and bring a lot of attention to the city and region. “Sportsnet initially told us there would be the 10 best men’s teams in the world and the 10 best ladies’ teams in the world coming to Cranbrook,” he said. “Now they’re thinking that might even go to a larger number.” Part of the reason there may be even more teams coming is that 2017 falls in a pre-Olympic Games year. “So all the teams that are looking at competing in the Olympics in 2018 will want to compete as much as they can in 2017,” he said. “So

it should be a big draw for teams around the world. I would expect we’d get the teams from Russia, Japan, Korea, basically all the big teams in the world of curling.” The Grand Slam events are separate from the Curl Canada events, such as the Briar Cup and the Scotties. “It’s going to be a great event for the city,” he said. “Even with just 20 teams, each team has a minimum of six, probably more. They all need hotels, they all need to eat. Then of course all the media people that are going to be here. There’s going to be hundreds of people coming in just for that. They’ll be here for a week and will need a lot of business services here in Cranbrook.” Brock said the Grand Slams have been going on for a few years now and are put on by Sportsnet. Part of the reasoning behind putting in a bid has to do with Sportsnet increasing the number of Grand Slams in the coming years. “They had six before and now they are going to go with eight,” he explained. Brock said the Grand Slams typically have $100,000 prize pools. The Cranbrook Curling CLub sent a letter to

Eve Muirhead from Scotland is one of the elite curlers likely to take part in a Grand Slam in Cranbrook in 2017. council, included in the April 27 regular meeting agenda, which noted the club’s board of directors had unanimously agreed to guarantee up to $90,0000 of the $150,000 fee required to host the event. Under the current proposal, the city would cover the other $60,000. “The board understands that previous Grand Slam Curling events have been profitable for the hosting organization and we would propose that the Curling Club and the City share equally in the

financial returns of this event,” the letter read. “Therefore, based on previous event results, we would anticipate that both parties should receive their initial investment back and probably earn a profit from this event.” The board also wrote that in addition to the financial aspects, the city would receive national and international television coverage promoting the city as a great place to visit or to do business. The board said the event would also bring a large num-

ber of participants and fans who would require the facilities and services of local businesses which would be a major benefit for the local business community. The board of directors also noted curling club members would form a local organizing committee to oversee the various tasks for the event, such as opening/ closing ceremonies, ice crews, on-ice officials, program sellers, set-up and tear down and other responsibilities.

Cranbrook fire sends one to hospital BARRY COULTER

One person was taken to hospital following a structure fire in the 100 block of 8th Avenue South in Cranbrook Wednesday night. At approximately 9 pm, Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services responded to the 911 call and upon arrival found the lone female occupant outside of the home. She was taken by ambulance to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital for assessment. Fire fighters quickly entered the building and were able to knock down and extinguish the fire. Crews are still on scene as of 10:00pm working to secure the scene. No cause has been determined and no damage estimate is known. Officials will conduct their investigation into the cause on Thursday morning.

Quiet visit from Minister draws criticism

From Page 1 “I am particularly proud of our Government’s tough on crime policies and our economic initiatives that will provide growth opportunities for all residents of Kootenay-Columbia. I am grateful that Minister MacKay took time out of his busy schedule to meet with community leaders - to hear their thoughts and provide valuable input on our Conservative Government’s policies. Only this Government stands up for the values of Kootenay-Columbia”, said MP Wilks. NDP candidate Wayne Stetski questions the meetings with constituents. The people of the Kootenays in fact missed their opportunity to speak with Justice Minister Peter MacKay at a meeting held in Cranbrook this weekend, says Stetski. “I was very surprised to discover that Minister MacKay came to Cranbrook supposedly to discuss Bill C51 with constituents, but it appears virtually no one in Cranbrook knew he was coming,” said Stetski. “If Mr. Wilks is so sure that Bill C51 is the right thing to do, and if he thinks that it was defensible for him to vote in favour of the bill even when so many people in this area do not support it, having the Justice Minister in town would have been a great opportunity for Mr. Wilks to hold a public meeting and address his constituents’ concerns. “But that’s not what Mr. Wilks did. Instead he held a meeting with only a handpicked group of individuals, to give Minister MacKay a photo-op and some-

thing to tweet about. “I don’t think that the citizens of this region believe that this kind of politicking is acceptable. Mr. Wilks has utterly failed to represent the people of the Kootenays in this matter.” Green Party candidate Bill Green says he had to rely on Google searches to get any information on Minister MacKay’s visit. “It is very disappointing that no opportunities were arranged for Minister MacKay to speak to the general public about the wide range of justice issues that are of concern to people in this riding,”Green said. “From my door-todoor campaigning, I have learned that many people are concerned about the erosion of our democratic rights that will result from Bill C-51. I’m convinced that people in this riding are going to vote for a candidate and a party that will be transparent and open to dialogue and different perspectives.” And Liberal candidate Don Johnston can’t believe Minister MacKay did make himself available. “I am amazed and disappointed that a Minister of the Crown would visit the riding, at some considerable cost, and not make themselves available to the public and the media. It is, unfortunately totally consistent with the Conservative obsession to control the message and stage events where they don’t need to worry about bothersome citizens or media who might ask unscripted messages. It’s another example of how disconnected this government is from the people it governs.”

Dangerous intersection has seen 29 accidents since 2008 Arne Petryshen

In a letter to Cranbrook city council, a resident cautioned of the dangers that the intersection of Highway 95A, Theatre Road and Mission Road presents to motorists and other traffic. The intersection lies just outside of Cranbrook. Paul Sawatzky wrote

For the Bulletin

that he witnessed an accident there on May 5 involving two SUVs. “I was outside at the time and was one of the first people to respond to the accident,” he said. “A tire from one of the vehicles involved in the crash ended up in the front yard of our business.” Sawatzky noted this wasn’t the first accident

A serious accident occurred May 5 at the intersection of Theatre Rd. and Highway 95A he’d seen there, as his place of employment is located just off the intersection. “This intersection is extremely busy,” Sawatzky wrote. “There is a large volume of traffic on Highway 95A throughout the day. The resort at St. Eugene generates a high volume of traffic. Many motorists use Theatre Road as an access road for Cranbrook. Immediately after this intersection is the turn off for Collinson Road which is used to access the parking

lot for Rails to Trails.” He gave some suggestions to make the intersection safer, including: drop the highway speed limit at that location down to 60 km/h; install warning signs; install rumble strips and/or speed bumps; and increase RCMP enforcement at that area. He suggested a traffic light could be an option as well. At city council on Monday, CAO Wayne Staudt clarified that part of the intersection is in city limits

where it comes into Theatre Road. “Then the highway part is outside city limits. The area coming in from Mission Road is of course not city limits, but we do have some city limit issues going on there.” Staudt said he has spoken to the city’s Director of Engineering about the letter. “This is a bad corner and we need to work with highways, whether it ends up being streetlights or widening of the road — more turnout lanes or whatever — but it definitely is going to be a joint effort between us and (The Department of) Highways.” Sharpe said he has been in discussions with Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. “They have identified it as an intersection of concern as well,” Sharpe said, adding that a basic investigation found 29 accidents since 2007. “Ten of those were injury accidents.”

Liberals introduce their candidate for Kootenay Columbia

Don Johnston of Nelson to run for Liberals in Kootenay Columbia BARRY COULTER Townsman Editor

And then there were four. The Liberal Party of Canada will be represented in the riding of Kootenay-Columbia in the upcoming federal election, with the acclamation of Don Johnston of Nelson as candidate. Johnston was officially acclaimed Wednesday in Nelson, a city which is for the first time part of the Kootenay-Columbia riding with recent redrawing of constituency boundaries. He will be running against Conservative David Wilks, NDP candidate Wayne Stetski and Green Party candidate Bill Green. “What’s prompting me to run is a pretty high level of dissatisfaction with the current political situation in Canada, and in particular the ‘attitudinal issues’ towards democracy of this present government,” Johnston told the Townsman in an interview earlier this week. “My entire personal history, professional and volunteer has

Don Johnston, federal Liberal candidate.

been if you see something you believe needs changing, then you have a responsibility to get involved at whatever level you can and in this particular situation this is the level that I’m getting involved in.” Johnston grew up in the Kootenays and graduated from LV Rogers Senior Secondary in Nelson. He has had a 40-year career in community development, both within Canada and internationally. He has worked at the national level as President of Canada

World Youth (CWY) and Canadian Executive Services Organization (CESO) and has served as the CEO of the Columbia Basin Trust. He has a Master of Arts degree in Leadership and Training from Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia. Johnston spoke further to his dissatisfaction with the current government. “I think this government has become increasingly ideologically driven,” he said. “And really has gotten to a point where

is not just east and west. Fernie is as different from Revelstoke as Creston is from Golden, and none of those places see themselves as Cranbrook or Nelson. I just don’t see that east/west split in the same way. I think it’s a really diverse riding with different issues in different parts of the riding. “But we’re also all part of the Columbia Basin, and have been that way since the creation of the Columbia Basin Trust, so there’s a level of communication and understanding across the region, and a sense of common purpose and common need that didn’t exist before, and it’s getting stronger every year. So I think that changes the dynamic as well.” “The other big dynamic we’re seeing is that this divisive, negative approach is starting to really take its toll on the Conservative Party. If we’re going to win this riding, and I truly believe we can, we’re going to have to draw significant vote away from the Conservative vote — which last election 57 per cent. It’s not about vote splitting here, its about making sure people understand there’s an

they’re simply not open even within their own caucus to influences — it’s really become a centralized party under the leadership of Mr. Harper. I think they’ve shown some real disrespect for the institutions like Parliament, like Question Period. “ The Conservative government’s use of omnibus bills are another example. “The Liberal Party is committed to a much more open style of Parliament, where in fact free votes will be the norm rather than the rare exemption, where we will not use omnibus bills, in fact we will take a careful look a ways to make it more difficult to use omnibus bills or prorogation of Parliament,” Johnston said. Nelson’s incorporation into Kootenay-Columbia changes the riding’s dynamics in a number of ways, Johnston said. “The fact that the riding is now different changes a lot of the historical information and makes it a lot less clear about where we going in this particular election,” he said. “But there are a lot of different things that will come into play. But the diversity of this riding

My set of skills and understanding of the tremendous diversity of this riding will be a valuable asset.” Johnston will be in Cranbrook on May 29, hosting an open house — a “Meet the Liberal Candidate,” from 5 p.m to 7 p.m. “I encourage anyone who is interest-

This is a reception for people in Cranbrook, who are interested in meeting me and having a dialogue. “We also invite people to contact us, if they want to speak directly to me or if they want responses to questions and concerns they have, or if they want to invite us to a specific event in their community. ast Saturday, on one of those remarkably beautiful days we get, I was delighted to sit with representatives from a couple of other churches in town at a table in Rotary Park. We were there as part of the Cranbrook PRIDE celebration and for three hours we talked with people, listening to them, sharing with them our sense of a God whose essence is love and who welcomes all people, regardless of race, age, gender, wealth, size, or sexual orientation. The most remarkable thing about the day for me was those people who came to our table and told us how important it was that we were there. They were glad to see a spiritual presence which doesn’t judge or condemn but welcomes all people as valued and valuable children of God. My heart swelled with gratitude at those words. Half a world away on the same day, a momentous referendum was being held in Ireland, where some 62 per cent of the people of Ireland voted to change the Irish constitution to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry. That is cause for celebration. There is already far too much vengeance and violence in our world against those who are different. The outcome of this referendum points to a new possibility of living together with compassion. It was heartening to see a fairly conservative society accept that gay rights are human rights, and that all people should have these rights as a matter of course. The vote means that a marriage be-

tween two people of the same sex will have the same status under the Irish constitution as a marriage between a man and a woman. Gay and lesbian couples will be recognized as a family and be entitled to constitutional protection for families. Civil partnerships for same–sex couples have been legal in Ireland since 2010. It gave couples legal protection, but that protection could be taken away by the government. That has all changed now, since the Rev. Yme Irish constitution can only Woensdregt be changed by a public referendum. These rights can only be removed by another popular vote. I was heartened to hear Diarmuid Martin, the Roman Catholic archbishop of Dublin and one of Ireland’s most senior Roman Catholic clerics, say that the “Church in Ireland needs to reconnect with young people. We [the Church] have to stop and take a reality check, not move into a denial of the realities.” It signals a new openness on the part of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland. It’s the same kind of openness which we have seen in the way Pope Francis has conducted himself ever since his election. I recognize that there are people who disagree with me. Particularly, I recognize that there are faithful Christians for whom this is the wrong step to take. Many of them live by the slogan, “The Bible says it; I believe it; that settles it!” Unfortunately, it’s not quite that easy. The reality is that there is not a single person on earth who lives entirely by what the Bible says. Not a single one of us! LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

We don’t stone our children when they curse us (Leviticus 20:9). Some of us eat our meat medium rare, or rare, which clearly violates the command not to eat the blood of any creature (Leviticus 17:14). Most of us don’t worry if we shop on the Sabbath (which, of course, is Saturday in the Old Testament). We no longer keep slaves, even though the Bible condones it. We don’t prevent handicapped people from coming to church or approaching God, even though the Bible forbids it (Leviticus 21:17–21). The list goes on and on. The reality is that none of us follows the Bible literally. Not a single one of us. There are some, however, who take a very few verses from the Bible out of context and use them as battering rams against gay and lesbian people. They believe homosexuality is wrong; they believe it is unnatural, and so they will use anything they can find to condemn the LGBTQ community. Let me suggest that the heart of Biblical teaching is found in these simple words: Love God with all that you are. Love your neighbour as yourself. I think that God is always doing something new in the world, creating and recreating, making life more whole, more joyful, more just. To love our neighbour doesn’t mean we always have to agree with each other. But it does mean that we have to treat each other with respect, compassion and grace. It is time, as Archbishop Diarmuid Martin said, for the church to stop and take a reality check. It is time for us to reach out in love to all people. Idlewild Lake Study

Opinion/Events

Letters to the Editor

In light of the flooding disaster in Cache Creek last week, I‘m calling on the City to release the Urban Systems safety study on the Idlewild Dam and the letter from the Regional Dam Safety Officer to the City. I’ve read both documents and believe every Cranbrook resident should have access to them because they raise grave concerns. I say this in light of the fact that the safety officer said in her Jan. 27, 2015, letter to the City that only one of the 11 safety recommendations made in the Urban Systems’ report had been carried out by the City at that date and that the recommendations “must be implemented and cannot be continually deferred.” She also said the City should complete “high priority” items within a year such as investigating the geotechnical stability of

the dam and making improvements to the dam’s spillway capacity. Has the City allocated money in the 2015 budget to do this or is the City just looking for grants to do these critical projects sometime in the future? Public safety is at stake here as well as liability for the City. The officer also pointed out in her Jan. 27 letter that the City had not submitted its Operation Maintenance and Surveillance manual for the dam and was therefore out of compliance with provincial legislation. Has this situation been rectified? Is the lake being drained “to protect the public” as Mayor Pratt said in the City’s Feb. 24, release. If that’s the case, is anything being done to save the fish, turtles, waterfowl and wildlife that depend on the lake habitat? How long are Cranbrook residents going to be deprived of this prime recre-

ational asset? Did Council consider Urban System’s recommendation to “armour” the downstream face of the dam to increase its safety in the event of water spilling over the top? If this was done, the dam likely wouldn’t have to be “decommissioned” (removed) nor the lake drained and we wouldn’t be in this mess now. After beginning to drain the lake, the City asks for input. But how can the public provide informed input when it doesn’t know the facts because of a Council decision made behind closed doors? In conclusion, I believe the City has nothing to lose and much to gain by being more forthcoming with the public about the Idlewild Dam issue. After all, we all live downstream of this critical facility. Gerry Warner Cranbrook

he house may still be there. Police Chief Adams said it was the third one across the creek on French (5th) Avenue. W.A. Jeffries & Co.’s, 1914 Cranbrook City Directory lists #130-French Avenue as the McGill residence. It may be missing the old verandah and, if not, it is certainly missing a verandah post and floor board. (Excerpt from the Cranbrook Herald, September 23, 1915): “Sunday afternoon the grave closed over the saddest event that has happened within the city in many years, when the funeral of the late Samuel Watson took place. Services were held at the family residence, Slaterville, Rev. W.K. Thomson, pastor of Knox Presbyterian church, performing the last rites. “The funeral partook of a military nature, the deceased being a member of the 11th C.M.R’s, Vernon. trumpeters from Fernie sounded the “Last Post. “At the graveside the most pathetic sight man ever gazed on, was witnessed by a teardimmed audience. The stillness of that autumn afternoon will long be remembered by many. “The aged mother of deceased, well up in the seventies, stood beside the grave as the body was lowered, weeping bitterly and whispering the name of the boy. There are many races and tongues of men, but the sobs of mothers speak but one language.” And so it was that blue-eyed, brownhaired Trooper Samuel Green Watson, age 25, on “harvesting leave” from the 54th Battalion Canadian Mounted Rifles stationed at Vernon, B.C., went to his eternal reward in the Cranbrook Old General Cemetery. It was a noble ceremony but it was not a noble death. In fact it was a pretty ignoble death, if you want to get right down to it, which is exactly what the coroner’s jury did the previous day when they indicted Hugh McGill for murder, the first in the city of Cranbrook in 13 years. It caused quite a sensation given the events and the families involved. Hugh McGill, age 31, was a railroad man, a CPR machinist, who lived with his wife on the aforementioned French Avenue, between Van Horne and Louis (1st) Street. Hugh, having switched from

the devil are you doing here?’ at which point he claims Trooper Watson struck him with a riding crop. McGill responded with his fists. Watson re-

sponded by dying. You see, Sam Watson was having an affair with Mrs. McGill; “improper relations” was the phrase of the day. Almost a year previously, Mr. McGill asked Police Chief Adams to warn both his wife and her suitor against the union, which he did. It was Chief Adams who received a telephone call from McGill at three o’clock in the afternoon of September 15, 1915, in which McGill stated, “You remember that man I spoke to you about? I got him. Come up and I’ll show you where he is.” He was, in fact, lying unconscious from a brain hemorrhage on the front room floor of the McGill residence. “He had it coming to him. It was self defense,” claimed McGill.

proximately 15 larger 18hole golf courses.” Of the 23 golf courses in the zone, 21 will be represented at the 2015 Zone 1 Women’s Championship. Julia Dereniwsky claimed her first Zone 1 title in 2013 at Kokanee Springs Resort, firing a two-day 161 to beat out Mackenzie Field of Christina Lake (164). In 2014, she repeated as Zone 1 champion at Creston Golf Club, carding a two-round 151 to once again defeat Field (163). Another Dereniwsky -- Julia’s younger sister Kira -- claimed the

women’s overall lownet title in 2014 with a tournament-best 139 to edge out Creston’s Janet O’Keefe (144). Both Dereniwskys call Kimberley Golf Club their home course. Kimberley Golf Club was awarded the event in September 2014 and according to Proudfoot, more than 40 men and women have volunteered their time to help ensure the tournament is set up for success. As much as the nature of the competition is key, Proudfoot emphasized the importance of the relationships established and developed

throughout participants from various communities over the years. “Getting to see the same gals we’ve seen before come back together and have a drink, have a laugh, have good memories [is my favourite part],” Proudfoot said. “As I travel and drop in [throughout the Kootenays] I can call up someone I’ve met at a zone tournament some years ago and say, ‘Hey, I’m in town.’ And we play [golf] together. “[Those relationships] bring many of the competitors back.” Proudfoot has been involved with organizing

the Zone 1 Women’s Championship for 23 years, so she speaks from experience regarding the relationships developed through the event. The Zone 1 Championship serves as a tournament qualifier for the B.C. Women’s Amateur, B.C. Women’s Seniors Championship and B.C. Women’s Juniors Championship. Additionally, the Zone 1 Championship is a low-net tournament for golfers of all levels of experience and ability. On top of individual competition, the Zone 1 Championship has a low-net team-play component, pitting four-player teams against one another in a battle for club supremacy. Spectators wishing to come out and support the local athletes on the final day of competition are encouraged to make their way to the 18th green between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The top group is expected to make its final approach on the last hole at this time. “That would be wonderful,” Proudfoot said. “You’ve got Julia Dereniwsky, who has won the women’s amateur [title] the last two years in a row on two other golf courses and her sister Kira who was low-net overall [last year]. “We’ve got various others from nearby and far away that are in that low handicap group.” Zone 1 -- Kootenays

Buffalo Sabres hire Dan Bylsma as head coach John Wawrow Associated Press

BUFFALO, N.Y. - A week after losing out on Mike Babcock, the Buffalo Sabres went with another experienced Stanley Cup winner by hiring Dan Bylsma to become their next coach. The hiring was announced Thursday, after the former Pittsburgh Penguins coach spent a second consecutive day meeting with Sabres owners Terry and Kim Pegula and general manager Tim Murray in Buffalo. The hiring was delayed briefly after the Sabres were required under NHL rules to compensate the Penguins for hiring Bylsma because he was still under contract with Pittsburgh after being relieved of his duties a year ago. The Sabres were expected to send the Penguins a future draft pick in exchange for Bylsma, whose contract with the Penguins ran through June 2016. Bylsma, who coached the Sidney Crosby-led Penguins to win the 2009 Cup championship, takes

over a franchise coming off consecutive last-place finishes and attempting to rebuild through youth. He replaces Ted Nolan, who was fired a day after the season ended, and becomes Buffalo’s third coach since Lindy Ruff was fired in February 2013. Bylsma spent five-plus seasons in Pittsburgh, where he won a franchise-best 252 games and was the NHL’s 2011 coach of the year, before being fired during front office changes a year ago. The hiring leaves the New Jersey Devils as the NHL’s only other team with a coaching vacancy. The Sabres have missed the playoffs in each of the past four seasons and haven’t won a playoff series since 2007, when Buffalo reached the Eastern Conference final. The Sabres have spent the past three seasons adding youth and stockpiling high draft picks. Buffalo has the No. 2 choice in the draft next month for the second consecutive year and is expected to select Boston University centre Jack Eichel.

The British Columbia Golf Association (BCGA) Zone 1 Women’s Championship hits Kimberley Golf Club this weekend for the first time in more than a decade. The 36-hole event begins Saturday, May 30, with final-round action taking place Sunday, May 31. “The event itself is supposed to mimic what goes on at the provincial level so local girls from the Kootenays get exposure to what is actually going on provincially and nationally amongst golf competitors,” said tournament chair Karen Proudfoot Wednesday afternoon. “The fact we have the local gals exposed to this, many of them have never seen a zone tournament and never been to a zone tournament. It’s an opportunity for them to experience the process.” Proudfoot expects to have more than 20 local entries from Cranbrook, Kimberley and surrounding area, including home-grown talent looking to defend a pair of tournament titles. Julia Dereniwsky, a native of Kimberley fresh off her first year with the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women’s golf team, returns to the tournament intent on defending her 2013 and 2014 amateur titles. “For [someone like] Julia Dereniwsky, it’s hugely important,”

Proudfoot said. “For the local average, 20-plus handicap person, it’s an exposure to something that’s different -- a combined social and true competition.” In total, the field is maxed out at 72 golfers this year, which exceeds the field average of 50 golfers over the past five years. “There are 23 golf courses with ladies clubs participating in the zone and of those 23, several of them are nine holes and not really capable of hosting such a large tournament,” Proudfoot said. “[The tournament] gets rotated around ap-

San Jose Sharks hire Peter DeBoer as head coach Josh Dubow Associated Press

SAN JOSE, Calif. The San Jose Sharks have officially hired former New Jersey and Florida coach Peter DeBoer to replace the departed Todd McLellan. The Sharks made the announcement via news conference Thursday. The decision to hire DeBoer ends a lengthy search that started April

20 when the team and McLellan announced that he would not be

back for an eighth season in San Jose. The departure was announced as a mutual agreement and McLel-

lan was later hired as head coach in Edmonton. GM Doug Wilson interviewed numerous candidates before deciding on DeBoer, who has coached seven seasons in the NHL with the Panthers and Devils. His best came in 2011-12 when he led New Jersey to the Stanley Cup finals, where the Devils lost to Los Angeles.

Montreal mayor lobbies for MLB regular season games ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK - The mayor of Montreal has asked the commissioner of Major League Baseball to consider playing three or four regular-season games in the city next year. Mayor Denis Coderre met with commissioner Rob Manfred in New York on Thursday. Coderre says six or seven teams have expressed an interest in playing there in 2016. Montreal had the Expos from 1969 through 2004.

The team then moved to Washington and became the Nationals. A pair of exhibition games in Montreal between the Blue Jays and Reds in early April drew a total of more than 96,000 fans to Olympic Stadium. Manfred recently said the interest shown by Montreal meant the city had successfully passed the first test toward a return of baseball. Manfred has said the city would need a new stadium to get an expansion team or a club to relocate.

United Nations monitoring FIFA corruption scandal ASSOCIATED PRESS

The United Nations says it is reviewing its partnerships with FIFA and monitoring “very carefully” the large bribery and corruption scandal that has exploded around soccer’s world governing body.

The spokesman for the U.N. secretary-general told reporters Thursday that the U.N. has not been contacted in any way related to the U.S. and Swiss federal investigations. Stephane Dujarric says the U.N. has had a number of onetime partnerships with FIFA and

that all have been pro bono. He says the U.N. does not have an exclusive partnership with the organization. He says the partnerships are based on “ensuring that the U.N.’s message on peace, on tolerance are seen and heard within these major sports events.”

KIJHL Thunder Cats swing deal for scoring forward Taylor Rocca Sports Editor

In 41 regular season games during the 201415 season, the 5-foot-10 forward tallied 21 goals and 51 points. “He has all the tools to be a dominant player in the KIJHL,” said Jeff Dubois, Thunder Cats

head coach and general manager, in a team press release. “He has a high skill level and a tremendous shot, plus he plays a heavy game and will bring added toughness to our forward group.” In Dubois’ first season in Creston, the Thunder Cats finished 28-18-1-5, good enough for 62 points and a thirdplace finish in the competitive Eddie Mountain Division. The Thunder Cats dropped a five-game, first-round playoff decision to the eventual league champion Kimberley Dynamiters.

VANCOUVER - Experts are blaming El Nino for speeding up nature’s clock and forcing firefighters to deploy weeks ahead of normal to battle wildfires across rural Western Canada. They say the natural phenomenon that cycles every two to seven years has been activated early this year and is predicted to accelerate wildfire activity across the northwest. The tinderbox effect will be felt from Oregon to British Columbia

and across the northern Prairies into Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. “Some of us are certainly happy to have a nice summer without rain, but from a wildfire perspective it does create a greater wildfire hazard in this region, and even further north, because of that lack of precipitation,” said geography Prof. Ian McKendry, with the University of British Columbia. “We’re left high and dry, as it were.” Firefighters have already been dispatched to scores of fires in B.C.,

El Nino blamed for busy Western Canada wildfire season

NEWS

daily bulletin

of La Loche and Garson, Sask. While El Nino has kicked off the wildfire season early, forecasters say it also has the potential to develop in strength. The phenomenon itself involves a reversal of winds and currents that moves warm waters across the Pacific, altering the atmosphere to change weather patterns. Rather than create above-average temperatures, however, El Nino tends to reduce precipitation, said Kerry Anderson, a fire research scientist with the Canadian Forest Service. Snowfall also melted weeks to a month ahead of schedule because of El Nino, he said. “There are perhaps two dozen global models, they’re all more or less in consensus that an El Nino event is kicking in,” he said. “But one thing we’re watching is perhaps if the situation may settle down later in the summer, which early predictions seem to indicate.” Anderson said that on a daily basis, the number of fires burning will depend on factors such as thunderstorm activity, the availability of fire-suppression resources, wind and forest conditions.

10 Minutes to Disaster! Dogs (and cats) cool themselves by panting and by releasing heat through their paws. On summer days the air and upholstery in your vehicle can heat up to high temperatures that make it impossible for pets to cool themselves. The risk is real! If it is 26ºC outside, inside a car, even with the windows cracked, the temperature can reach 37ºC in 10 minutes and 43ºC in 20 minutes. If your dog’s temperature reaches 41ºC cell and organ damage begins to occur. Please leave your animals at home when running out to do errands. If you do spot a dog or any animal in a car on a hot day please call the BCSPCA hotline at 1-855-622-7722 or the local RCMP immediately. Note that dogs also risk overheating if exercised outside during the day in hot weather. Choose the early morning and evening when it’s cooler, to excercise your dog and always remember to bring extra water for your dog and take lots of breaks. Symptoms of heatstroke • Exaggerated panting (or the sudden stopping of panting); • rapid or erratic pulse; • salivation; • anxious or staring expression; • weakness and muscle tremors; • lack of coordination; • tongue and lips red (which may eventually turn bluish in colour); • convulsions or vomiting; • collapse, coma and death. Emergency treatment for dogs • If your dog shows symptoms of heatstroke follow these instructions: • Immediately move the animal to a cool, shady place. • Wet the dog with cool water. • Fan vigorously to promote evaporation. This process will cool the blood, which reduces the dog’s core temperature. • Do not apply ice. This constricts blood flow which will inhibit cooling. • Allow the dog to drink some cool water. • Take the dog to a veterinarian as soon as possible for further treatment.

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Being passive is not your thing, but with so much going on around you, you might not have a choice. A close friend or loved one is likely to express his or her feelings, and it could trigger a strong reaction. Remain calm. Tonight: Kiss and make up. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You have a lot on your plate, so it might be best if you can work from home today. A major purchase could be in the offing, or at least part of your discussions. If you feel unsure about any aspect, hold off for now. Tonight: Run around the block. Bathing suit time is here! GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Your imagination continues to be difficult to harness. Many of you will be focused on a new romance or a loved one. A case of spring fever could have you feeling very upbeat. A friend might make an off-the-wall comment that catches you off guard. Tonight: Love the moment.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll be coming from a grounded place. Many of you might consider taking off at the last minute to head to a local summer hot spot. A boss could be unpredictable. Be willing to say “no” to a nearly impossible request. Tonight: You get others’ attention wherever you are. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Ask the right questions and you’ll get the right answers. You know that how you verbalize a request will determine the outcome. A loved one might find it hard -- if not impossible -- to say “no” to you. Be sure that you are not pushing this person too hard. Tonight: TGIF! VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your funds will be a major topic of conversation. You seem to be unusually optimistic right now. Still, a risk could go too far. Not being open with a friend or loved one might have this person questioning your feelings. Tonight: Good times don’t require a big budget. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might wonder what others

Tundra

are complaining about. You are on the verge of achieving a long-term desire. Examine your options, but not for too long. Others seem to exhibit a certain amount of impulsiveness. Hang in there. Tonight: Accept a heartfelt compliment with grace. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Just because you aren’t in the spirit of the moment, that doesn’t mean you can’t free yourself up tomorrow. Accomplish everything you need to as quickly as possible, clear out your desk, get errands done and think “weekend plans.” Tonight: Follow your instincts. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Friends have a way of gathering around you and pointing you in the right direction -- or so they think. Be careful, as you could forget to include a close loved one and cause yourself a problem that might be difficult to neutralize. Tonight: Follow your heart. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Every so often you get an offer that is too good to say “no” to. If you choose not to pursue that

specific path, you will never know what was possible. Make a point of breaking out of your conservative mindset, and just go for it. Tonight: Surprises mark your interactions. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) If you can detach and resist throwing yourself right into the middle of a situation, and you will like the results. Remember, you don’t need to jump on any matter immediately, although you might decide to do just that. Tonight: Ride the wave of the unexpected. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You value friendship. As a result, you might choose to relate with others on more of a one-on-one level. Be careful about making any financial commitments just yet. The highs and lows of money dealings could be extreme. Tonight: You know how to delight a special someone! BORN TODAY Politician Patrick Henry (1736), former U.S. President John F. Kennedy (1917), singer La Toya Jackson (1956)

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Thirty years ago, when I was 11, I got into an argument on the school bus with another kid my age. I was an insecure child, and I was losing the argument and feeling humiliated. In a move to try to regain some power, I called the other kid, who is black, a racial epithet. I immediately felt sick at what I had done, and it is the only time, before or since, that I ever did anything like that. I have thought about that moment hundreds of times over the years and consider it one of my lowest, most shameful decisions. Thinking about it has made me aware of inherent racial biases that I was raised with, and I have actively tried to address these. Recently, through a mutual friend, I became aware that the victim of my words is reachable through social media. My question is: Should I apologize? My apology would be sincere, but would also perhaps be self-serving, as it may only dredge up a terrible memory for him. I so wish I could erase that awful moment, but I am prepared to accept that I just have to live with this disgusting thing. What do you advise? -- Trying My Best Dear Trying: Apologize. Maybe it is a bit self-serving, but many apologies are -- they make us feel better that we tried to make amends. If this dredges up a terrible memory for him, you can rest assured that he hasn’t forgotten the incident, either. An apology could help him close that door. A private message, rather than a public post, would be best. Don’t belabor the issue. Simply say you are sorry, that it has bothered you for 30 years (he may be glad to hear that), and that you want him to know you sincerely regret it. Any communication after that should be up to him. Dear Annie: I’d like to say something about people who disregard their family members who require care. My mother had a heart valve replaced when she was 97. Eighteen months later, she had a stroke and has been in a nursing home since. By the time she uses up all of her savings and is eligible for government assistance, she will have expended close to $300,000. My family realizes that this is my mother’s money until she dies. We have picked up the remaining costs, including supplemental health insurance, hearing aids, clothing, etc. My mother just turned 100. She can walk with a walker and one person assisting. But I am at the nursing home 12 hours a day to provide the therapy that Medicare doesn’t. The staff here is kind and caring, but they have a limited amount of time, so I help out any way I can. I have seen residents who have no one to visit or keep their interest piqued. They tend to die sooner than patients who have visitors. I hope those uncaring people get the same treatment when they are old. -- Pat Dear Pat: There is no question that regular visits, especially those that encourage conversation and exercise, are beneficial for residents of nursing homes and any seniors who live alone. We also know that doing so regularly requires commitment and dedication, and not everyone cares enough to put forth the effort. Your family sounds wonderful. Bless you. was in the fall of 1991 when the Cranbrook Public Library did the unthinkable. After nearly 70 years of service, the Library was forced to shut its doors. During this time, no child would be exposed to reading, no drop-out would be able to study for their GED, no student would be able to work on their school assignments, no diabetic had access to life-saving recipe books, no immigrant could explore ESL resources, no parent could obtain and fill out child-custody forms, no senior could learn about computers, no careers were explored, no retirement options were discovered, no new mothers could read about what to expect, no builders could consult provincial codes, no interest-groups could meet, and … well, this list is endless. But a literal padlock was placed on the building that for decades contributed to the cultural, economic, social, technological, and educational well-being of Cranbrook. Just how did any of this happen? A cash-strapped province combined with indifferent city governments had somehow transformed public libraries from an “essential service” into a “soft service”— the equivalent of a jacuzzi at a city swimming pool. With budgets cut and cut again, Cranbrook’s Library had no choice. With deep regret and anguish, and a great deal of courage, the Library laid off its staff and closed down for what was easily the longest two weeks in 1991 — saving the city 10,000 dollars. This was just the beginning though. The Library continued to be underfunded, and the only viable way to keep the doors from shutting again was to introduce user fees — an action which ran against the ethics and values of

both the Chief Librarian and the Library Board. Sadly there was no other option left. (Part of the problem was the Library was classified as a provincial association, and not a municipal library, which muddied the funding waters greatly). Cranbrook was not alone in this, and user fees also existed in public libraries throughout BC and Alberta. This issue was soon hashed out in every single newspaper in BC, with Cranbrook being the focal point (the town’s introduction of user fees continues to be mentioned in Library Science journals and textbooks). Fortunately the British Columbia Library Act was legislated into law on August 26, 1994. Section 46 of the Act made it illegal for public libraries to charge for use of a library’s core services. This also meant that the province had to make up for any financial deficit left by the removal of user fees. The Library could get back to business as usual. Which included the introduction of the provinces’s union catalogue on CD-ROM, a new type (and now obsolete) storage device, giving Cranbrook patrons access to just over 4 million titles available for interlibrary loan across the province. Also that year a young student named Ursula Brigl is hired as a part-time page (an act which greatly impacts the entire future of the Library). Although the building itself still floods, the roof still leaks, and actual plants have begun to appear wall cracks, one of the biggest threats to the Library is the foul balls hit by Mount Baker High School students, which every now and results in a broken window. In the spring of 1997 the city of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho challenges the Library to the Sister City Family Reading Challenge — a contest to see which city can read

more in a month, with each city wearing pins and promoting the other city’s economy. Those poor Americans misjudged Cranbrook’s competitive acumen, not to mention our long winter reading habits. Jeffrey M. Wallman’s 1973 western ‘Brand of the Damned’ was unsuccessfully challenged, as was the children’s book ‘Sam & Lucy’ by Harriet Ziefert. Both were thought to be too sexually explicit, but the Library Board voted to retain both items. A concerned patron also challenged Jean De Brunhoff ‘The Travels of Babar,’ (an award-winning children’s book) citing the elephant’s interaction with cannibals. When the Library decided to retain the title, the same patron filed a second challenge, citing the book’s racism. This patron also offered to voluntarily “cleanse” the Library of all children’s books promoting racism. Children’s Books featuring same-sex parents caused a near-riot at a Surrey elementary school, creating a campaign known as Bigots Ban Books. This hit a note here at home, as the Library received numerous strongly-worded letters on both sides of this issues. An August 3, 1999, the Library’s website was not only up and running but won the StudyWeb Award for Educational Excellence. The head of the province’s Library Trustees visits Cranbrook, finding the Library to be “a million dollar asset.” Writing an open letter to City Council, he stated “the community has a great deal to be proud of in its Library. While challenged for space the board and staff do an outstanding job providing the community with high quality library services.”

Next week, the Library in the new millennium.

Janus: The death of Samuel Watson Continued from page 7 It all came out in the coroner’s inquest: the love letters signed “Lots of hugs and kisses from Nellie” (Mrs. McGill’s actual given name is never stated), the photograph of Mrs. McGill upon Watson’s person at the time of death, Watson’s cap, clothes and riding crop, the sharp-edged post from the verandah upon which Watson apparently struck his head following a punch from McGill, even a blood-stained board from the porch floor, all given in evidence. The resulting two day trial took place at the fall assizes in Fernie the following month, with about 30 people called from Cranbrook appearing both as witnesses and jurymen. The crown prosecutor attempted to prove that the accused was the aggressor in the fatal fight but it came to naught. The defense lawyer made a strong

appeal for his client and was roundly applauded by the audience. The jury was out for half an hour before returning a unanimous not guilty verdict and Hugh McGill exited the Fernie court room a free man. Chief Justice Hunter, in discharging the accused, congratulated him and expressed “the hope that might be able to live down the dark shadow which had been cast across his domestic life, and also hoped the untimely ending of the life of young Watson would serve as a lesson to others regarding the breaking up of the homes of other people.” When McGill arrived by train in Cranbrook nearly 100 friends were waiting at the station to congratulate him on being released. It would appear that Hugh McGill did live down the “dark shadow cast across his domestic

life.” He died in the Cranbrook St. Eugene Hospital in 1955 and was buried in Westlawn cemetery. His wife at the time, Helen (of which “Nellie” is a derivative, by the way), died in 1970 at the former Bowness residence which was then in use as a rest home. She, too, is buried in Westlawn. Is the old house on French Avenue still there? Probably, although it’s hard to say which one it actually is. Is the verandah still there? Perhaps, minus an original post and a blood-covered board. Samuel Watson is surely still there, in the Old General Cemetery just across the road from the McGills in Westlawn, who are undoubtedly both there also. Needless to say, the motives for the entire tragic affair are still there and likely always will be.

tory CPP add-on to the provinces. Any tweaks to the CPP would require the support of two-thirds of the provinces representing two-thirds of the country’s population. The federal Liberals have said they will propose a compulsory expansion of the CPP, just like the one introduced by their provincial cousins in Ontario. “I think the majority of Canadians agree certainly the majority of Ontarians showed that in the last (provincial) election - that we need to expand the CPP because Canadians are not saving enough,” Liberal MP John McCallum, a former bank economist, said Thursday. The New Democrats have long supported a compulsory increase to the national pension plan.

Low drug costs won’t last forever: report Helen Br answell Canadian Press

TORONTO - The amount of money Canadians spent on prescription drugs last year rose a mere 0.9 per cent, the lowest increase since statistics on drug spending were first measured in 1975, a new report said Thursday. But Michael Law, a health economist at the University of British Columbia, warned that the trend of slowing growth in drug costs has probably run its course and steeper increases will likely pick up again soon. The report by the Canadian Institute for Health Information found that prescription drug spending for 2014 was expected to have reached just under $29 billion. That represents 85 per cent of all drug spending in Canada for last year and makes up 13.4 per cent of all health expenditures. Increases in the costs of prescription drugs slowed markedly in recent years after a period of price hikes.
