Budget actions balance UNBC books The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) board has approved a number of budget actions to balance the budget, including a tuition increase of two per cent. The board said the $75 million budget will allow the university to maintain existing service levels while providing time for the development and implementation of new planning processes that will establish future priorities. The budget illustrates there are some expected financial pressures facing the university, largely due to declining tuition revenue, reduced government grants and increasing compensation costs. To balance the budget, the board has approved a number of actions: • A one-time elimination of allocations to reserves that have sufficient balances to maintain activities at the same level as previous years. • A temporary decrease to the utilities budget based on last year’s results. • A temporary increase to the revenue line related to investment income based on prior years’ returns. • Tuition fee increases of two per cent. “UNBC faces fiscal challenges, and this budget does a very good job of explaining them,” UNBC President Daniel Weeks said. “While we’ve presented a balanced budget for 2015-16, the budget framework sets out a projected deficit of $3.7 million for 2016-17. The mandate from the board is for administration to lead the process of dealing with this deficit, so we will need to develop some new strategies to address this issue.” About 63 per cent of the operating budget for the university is provided by the provincial government some 24 per cent comes from tuition fees. Wages and benefits account for about 70 per cent of the university’s expenditures. The tuition fee for a full-time undergraduate student will now be $5,010 per year, an increase of about $99 per year.

Lightning-caused fires keep crews busy The Cariboo Fire Centre (CFC) responded to six new lightning-caused wildfires during the weekend of May 29 – May 31, said Emily Epp, communication specialist with the Wildfire Management Branch Monday. “We had a couple in each of our planning zones. We discovered two Friday, two Saturday and two Sunday, but they were all small fires.” Four of the wildfires have been put out and crews are responding to the fifth one located at the north side of Young Lake east of 70 Mile House and the sixth one at Bowling Point on the North

Arm of Quesnel Lake. During the weekend of May 22 – 24, there were 10 lightning-caused fires, with the majority of them sparked in the 100 Mile House area. “We are seeing a surprising amount of lightning-caused wildfires for this time of year,” Epp said. “On average we see about seven and some years it is much less. Last year we had one lightning-caused fire.” The CFC expects during the next few days that it will be responding to small lightningcaused fires Epp said, adding the centre is very appreciative of the public’s quick reporting

so the fires can be kept small. Air patrols are also done periodically over areas that have been hit with the most lightning to keep an eye out for any smoke. The Cariboo Fire Centre has responded to 69 fires since April 1 – 33 of them were ignited by lightning. Currently, large-scale Category 3 burning is restricted in the Cariboo Fire Centre. With the increase of naturally-occurring fires, the Wildfire Management Branch is reminding the public to exercise caution in the back country and with all types of fire use, Epp said.

Proposed Amendments to Boundaries of Old Growth Management Areas within the Quesnel Natural Resource District Notice is hereby given that, pursuant to Section 93.4 of the Land Act, and for the purposes of the Forest and Range Practices Act, the Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations is proposing amendments to Old Growth Management Area (OGMA) boundaries in the Quesnel Natural Resource District. BUSINESS

Are you up for the challenge?

AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter After eight years on the pipeline and four years in oilfield management, Hillary Shearing returned to her roots – nutritional coaching. “I have a different approach on nutrition coaching,” she said. “It’s called reality… the reality of teaching people to love cooking with whole foods, and clean ingredients – rather than a fad diet, or slim fast bar… and still be able to crush the occasional burger. “I’ve made it my personal goal to help people understand why the food they are eating is making them tired, un-happy and gain weight.” Hence Shearing’s commitment to becoming a registered nutritional coaching practitioner and book author – both goals are in the works. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have a husband to support me as a mother and all of my aspirations,” she said, noting the huge

time commitment. Currently, the selfprofessed foodie is hosting a clean eating challenge that has reached 1,000’s of people, from Vancouver and Prince Edward Island, to New York and as far as Texas. In fact, the Quesnel native’s reach has hit more than 21,000 Facebook page likes in leads than two years. “The newest challenge You Are What You Eat is a full two week meal plan with all of my recipes and a grocery list,” she explained. “What makes me stand out from other nutritionists – is that I actually host a private Facebook group for each challenge, cook the same menu and answer every question that the group has. For more or to sign up, look for posters around town or contact Shearing at info@ myawesomefoods. com. Photo: Hillary Shearing whips up one of her healthy creations.

It’s Paving Time! As you prepare to pay your taxes, please pay attention to all of the work being done to improve our City’s amenities and infrastructure – that’s where a large portion of your taxes go. Taxes, simply put, allow us to collectively maintain and improve our community. This year’s budget has no tax increase for general operating costs as Council is managing those costs down. Instead, Council raised taxes only to ensure our City’s infrastructure can be maintained and improved. As a result, we were able to almost double our road-paving program this year and almost $800,000 will be spent on overlay paving projects starting this month. As an added bonus, Quesnel Paving won the contract; so much of this money will stay in our community. Along with this significant investment in overlay paving, Public Works will be rebuilding Evans and Hoy Street, and Hawk Street near Crane (over $400,000). Sidewalks on Barlow Avenue and Pentland Crescent ($100,000) will be replaced. Portions of our Riverfront Trail system will be repaved and accessibility improvements will be made to our sidewalks ($30,000).

Policies passed Business leaders from across B.C. met in Prince George to set an aggressive new policy agenda for the BC Chamber of Commerce’s advocacy efforts to the province calling for a more transparent approach to taxation in B.C., innovation in regional solid waste management; and community and local government policies on rebalancing municipalities and regional districts, and for a provincial role in municipal restructuring, amongst others. These policies were passed at the BC Chamber Annual General Meeting & Conference, the province’s foremost business gathering, held this year in Prince George May 24-26. This unique grassroots policy-building forum brought together chambers from all corners of the province vigorously debate and adopt new policies affecting business operations throughout the province. Policies that are adopted become part of the BC Chamber’s advocacy agenda. This year, delegates voted on nearly 50 proposed policies. Policies voted into force include: • Promoting innovation in regional solid waste management; • a more transparent approach to taxation in B.C.; • rebalancing municipalities and regional districts; • provincial role in municipal restructuring; • making tourism funding more secure. “Our grassroots policy-development process is second-to-none in British Columbia,” Chamber president and CEO John Winter said. “This year in Prince George, business leaders from across B.C. came together to vote on policy recommendations from local chambers across the province advocating for business in B.C.”

We’re hoping to receive approval soon to proceed with Phase 2 of our West Quesnel Land Stability program, a $7.3 million twoyear project that involves a $2.3 million contribution from local taxpayers. This project will include the installation of surface water and storm drain systems as well as more wells and drains in an effort to further reduce the land movement on our west side. Upon completion of this project, we’ve earmarked significant dollars for road rehabilitation projects in West Quesnel, projects that don’t make sense to do until Phase 2 is complete. Two other major projects are also underway this year: the preliminary concept design of our new public works facility, and preparatory work for a major capital investment in our water well system. Over $400,000 will also be spent replacing the water main on Sword Avenue, and $180,000 on a storm drain project through LeBourdais Park. The City will also spend $167,000 on flowers and beautification, and $180,000 to improve the playground and resurface the tennis courts at West Fraser Timber Park. Your taxes do not “disappear” when you pay them to the City. Rather, they represent your investment in your community and you can see your money at work everyday in the programs and services our City workers provide and in the projects they undertake to maintain and improve our City.

Minister seeks options to keep forests off farmland TOM FLETCHER Black Press Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick says reforesting farmland in B.C.’s Interior is contrary to the intent of B.C.’s agricultural land reserve, and he’s looking for a way to put a stop to it. British health and household products manufacturer Reckitt Benckiser Inc. has bought up more than 8,000 hectares of farmland from Prince George south to Quesnel, planting the land with trees and vowing to keep the forest on the land for 100 years or more. Local governments are concerned that long-time farming and ranching land is being lost, and farming communities will be weakened as a result. Letnick said previously that a 2011 requirement for the Agricultural Land Commission to approve covenants for long-term reforestation of farmland would be required before such lands could be used as carbon offsets for the European carbon market. But a Reckitt Benckiser spokesperson confirmed the company isn’t attempting to claim or trade carbon offsets, so it won’t be seeking a covenant from the ALC. That leaves Letnick looking for another

way to stop the loss of farmland. “What I’ve been advised is that while they’re not claiming for offsets, they’re using it in their publicity to show that they are doing something that’s environmentally good to offset the negatives that they have back at home,” Letnick said in an interview Monday. The company’s stated plan to keep the farmland in forest “flies in the face of the [Agricultural Land Commission] Act and the intent of the act, and we will need to look at our options,” Letnick added. According to Reckitt Benckiser’s website (www.rb.com/ourresponsibility/trees), the company’s B.C. planting project is part of a program to make its global operations carbon neutral for the period 2006 – 2017. More than seven million trees have been planted and the goal is 10 million trees by next year. Staff at the Bulkley Valley Regional District contacted Reckitt Benckiser after its first purchase of lands around Vanderhoof in 2010, expressing concern about “centrally located and productive” land being alienated from production. A company representative said

only marginal or abandoned land is being used, a claim contradicted last week by Quesnel Mayor Bob Simpson. The company makes popular products such as Woolite fabric softener, Calgon detergent, Lysol and Clearasil

skin cleanser, which are sold around the world. Its B.C. program is called RB Trees for Change. “RB does not intend on registering any covenant on title to the lands it has acquired in British Columbia that would restrict the

use of such lands,” said Lynn Kenney, communications director for North America. “Instead, Trees for Change is a program we have developed to meet our own internal targets for environmental sustainability.”

Our tour was followed by a coffee chat at Edgewood Farm. This open event was an opportunity for residents and the business community to chat with Minister Wat and myself on community topics and on International Trade. Tolko Industries participated in this discussion, as well as the Quesnel & District Chamber of Commerce, Quesnel Community and Economic Development and the City of Quesnel, and interested community members. Our evening took us to the BC Historic Federation Conference that was hosted in Quesnel by the Quesnel & District Museum and Archives. It was a fantastic job by the team that attracted the conference to Quesnel and then displayed Quesnel and the regional area in a way that I’m sure will also attract return visits.

he BC Liberal government is in the process of adopting the Election Amendment Act, which will give candidates and political parties the ability to access hitherto private data about voters from past provincial elections. The NDP, unfortunately, has gone along with the basic thrust of this law. The most principled opposition has come from Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver, and independent Vicki Huntington has also been challenging the law. The main purpose behind the law is to allow well-funded political parties, notably the BC Liberals and NDP, to “mine” voter data and craft campaigns to encourage their own supporters to come to the polls, while at the same time (and likely quite secretly) coming up with ways of targeting specific supporters of the other parties from casting votes. Along the way, they will be digging into voters’ privacy in a way that has caused the Information and Privacy Commissioner great concerns. The amendment, introduced by Weaver, called for a delay in implementing the law until there was more public consultation. While the NDP supported the amendment, the BC Liberal majority voted against it. B.C. is, in some ways, the wild west of politics. There are no restrictions on donations from businesses, associations, wealthy individuals or unions to political campaigns. While there are limits on spending during campaigns, the most crucial and strategic spending is often done before the campaign is underway. While there is now full disclosure of those who donate to political parties, the amounts raised by the BC Liberals and the NDP are considerably more than is truly needed to properly run a campaign. The BC Liberals alone raised more than $10 million last year. Now the political parties are being handed another tool that, in a day and age when it is easier than ever to collect a raft of data about individuals, will allow them to hone their message and specifically target individuals. There was no public outcry calling for political parties to be given more information about voters. This law is an invasion of privacy and will only lead to political manipulation, all in the name of winning an election. –BP

B.C. goes long with LNG bid

pposition politicians were outraged over the B.C. government’s latest effort to secure its first major liquefied natural gas deal, announced last week. Premier Christy Clark, Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman and Finance Minister Mike de Jong signed agreements with Pacific Northwest LNG for a long-term gas royalty structure that could run for 30 years. The government says the deal guarantees minimum royalty revenue for the province, while the investors increase their revenue if the spread between gas prices in North America and Asia increases during the term. Pacific Northwest is a partnership of some of the biggest investors and gas customers: Malaysian state giant Petronas, its Canadian subsidiary Progress Energy, Chinese state firm Sinopec, Indian Oil Corp. and Japan Petroleum. These corporate giants will review a project development agreement, and if they approve, Clark will convene the legislature to approve changes that would compensate them if the new LNG income tax increases.

Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views Environmental changes such as a “discriminatory” carbon tax increase or greenhouse gas regulations on LNG would also trigger compensation. Future changes to general carbon tax or corporate income tax rates would not. NDP leader John Horgan warned that “too much lolly” is being offered, with no word of job guarantees for B.C. or a deal with First Nations at the proposed site near Prince Rupert. “My biggest concern is that we’re tying the hands of future governments because a desperate government made commitments that they over-promised on and now they want to get a deal at any cost,” Horgan said. Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver called it “shocking and irresponsible,” repeating his prediction that the global market is

proceeds over 40 years. The vote was a resounding no, despite a redesign that put pipelines on a suspension bridge over the most sensitive salmon habitat. Culbert suggests that given some time to examine environmental mitigation work, that answer may change. Does aboriginal title offer a veto over projects like this? According to the recent Supreme Court of Canada decision on the Tsilhqot’in case, the short answer is no. Objections could be overridden if governments determine a project is in the interest of the greater public. Talks have taken place with 19 First Nations affected by pipelines and facilities, and 14 have agreed. While they continue with Lax Kw’alaams and other Tsimshian Nations on the coast, it’s worth recalling that others are not so reluctant. The Nisga’a Nation has identified four sites as suitable for LNG terminals with a shorter pipeline route to the coast than Prince Rupert. swimming in gas and will never support huge greenfield projects across B.C. For the investors, it’s like a mortgage. There are “subjects” to be removed before the deal closes, and this is a proposed $36 billion mortgage for pipelines, LNG processing and shipping facilities. This isn’t just a political dispute. For example, Progress has drilled about 500 gas wells in northeastern B.C., and Petronas took it over with this development in mind. Without exports, B.C.’s whole gas industry is looking at a bleak future of low prices and demand. Petronas delayed its investment decision to this year and cited exactly these concerns, certainty on taxation and royalties beyond the election cycle. With that in hand, their obstacles remain federal environmental approval and a revenue sharing deal with a First Nation to host a terminal. Pacific Northwest CEO Michael Culbert notes that answers to questions posed by the Lax Kw’alaams First Nation were submitted to federal regulators only days before they started voting on a $1 billion share of LNG

Team Mission Possible looking for support Editor: Re: GearUp4CF – 1,200 km biking trip from Vancouver to Banff, June 20 – June 28 in nine days. CF presently stands for Cystic Fibrosis which is a genetic disease my nephew, Bob Costerton (born Sept. 24, 1964), was diagnosed with when he was about one. At that age, he weighed 12 lbs.; in fact, his dad gave Bob a ride in a plastic push-toy dump truck which I had sent to England as a gift for Bob to push around, it wasn’t built to be a rideon toy. About the same time (1965), his grandmother Hilda Costerton – an R.N. in B.C. – went to England to train as a midwife. After only some of her training, she alerted Bob’s parents, Bill and Vivian (nee McClounie) Costerton, that he should be checked for CF. He was then diagnosed and, by the doctors involved, given possibly another

three years to live. From that day forward, in spite of being a mother of three – and later, four – Bob’s mother (my sister) became a dedicated, at-home physiotherapist three times a day (about half hour per session), and she gave Bob ‘digestionaiding granuals’ each time he ate – even one cracker. CF causes extra mucous in the lungs which must be loosened or kept moving to aid the person’s breathing. CF also effects the digestive system; hence the reason why Bob had not been able to properly gain weight in his first year – his food was not being digested. And from then until now – about 50 years, I have watched Bob (51 this Sept. 24) grow to be the athletic, trim man he is. His active lifestyle, which he thrives on, has included: biking, hiking, running, water skiing, snow skiing, hockey, soccer, canoeing,

kayaking, etc. – a life style that was partly started by his parents. But recently, Bob told me that even after he had learned to do his own therapy, one day instead of doing that boring old therapy, he just got on his bike and went for a good long ride – and when he got home he not only felt better, but had had fun. It’s all worked out super as, for several years now, biking has become:

“a whole family-of-four outing.” In that same 50 years, however, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has constantly found through research new and better treatments for those with CF – remembering that there are various strengths of the disease; but, until CF stands for ‘Cure Found’ rather than ‘Cystic Fibrosis’ ( refer to CF web site and/or pledge forms), as many of us who can

even give $5 or $10 must continue to support research of this dastardly disease. This disease can, from birth on, define many individuals lives, but, if they take up the battle with a cheery and faithful dedication as my nephew, Bob Costerton in Kamloops, has done, many will find out they can be considered an athlete instead of a sick person – and feel and look like an athlete, too. Both Bob and his niece, Laura Grant, are planning to make the 1200 km bike marathontrip “GearUp4CF” from Vancouver to Banff (along much of Highway #3) in hopes of raising money for CF – they’re Team Mission Possible. “Kathy and the kids and I did the Golden Triangle bike ride this past weekend. Super proud of them for doing just under 300 km in three days,” Bob said in an e-mail sent to me.

“Not even for a good cause, but just for the challenge. I found it hard, but certainly possible. It was somewhat sobering with respect to the longer daily distance and longer duration of the GearUp4CF ride. Oh well, I can only do my best.” (Signed, Big Hugs, Bob). You’ll be able to follow Bob and Laura’s journey at www.facebook.com/ cfmissionpossible To donate to Team Mission Possible visit www.cfmissonpossible. ca or donate at any Bank of Montreal in the name of Team Mission Possible Transit #0747, account number 8978-333, tax receipts issued for all donations more than $20. Like Bob says: “Any donation to CF is good, but right now we are hoping to raise research funds with Team Mission Possible’s efforts on that long nine-day ride.” Ruth McClounie Quesnel

Trip of a lifetime

Annie Gallant Lifestyles Editor

Two of the fabulous sites Lynn Wright was privileged to visit were left: the Taj Mahal in India and right: standing on top of the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan close to Mexico City. Contributed photos

Lynn Wright experienced the world with a Girl Guide perspective ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

L

ynn Wright is not a stranger to world travel. However, an opportunity presented itself to her that she couldn’t pass up. She toured the world for five and half weeks visiting the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) four world centres. As a long-time Girl Guide volunteer, Wright is well-connected across the country, so when she heard of a tour guide (with a guider background as well) in Toronto organizing this world centres tour, it appealed to her. “I hesitated, it was a lot of money, but with the full support of my family and my financial advisor, I signed up for a trip of a lifetime,” she said with a smile. Without knowing even one of the other 19 people on the tour, Wright was enthusiastic because she knew she would be

traveling with people who shared her passion for the guiding movement. The group landed in Mexico City on Feb. 17 and proceeded to the first world centre Our Cabana. Although when it was first built in 1957, Our Cabana was in the countryside, now it’s surrounded by the large city of Cuernavaca. All the world centres are set up as hostel-style accommodations for large and small groups of girl guides and guiders. Day trips to local points of interest are organized. Lynn and her group witnessed the winter home of the monarch butterflies and also spent a special guiding event, Thinking Day, with local girl guides. Each world centre has a focus for visitors and Our Cabana’s was on local heritage. Reluctantly, the group boarded a jet bound for Singapore, leaving their Mexican experience behind but not forgotten. Twenty-two hours later they landed and spent two

days soaking up the local culture and enjoying hotel living before heading to Pune, India for the second world centre, Sangam. Opened in 1966 by Lady Baden-Powell, Sangam has remained a centre for international friendship and understanding, a place for new experiences. It would be eight days of a brand-new country with all the sights and smells that encompassed. “There was an acrid smell from all the massive exhaust fumes,” she said. Arriving at Sangam, the group found dormitorystyle accommodations again. The focus for this world centre was on community service and the Canadian guiders were invited to interact with an organized group of local waste pickers who create a living collecting, sorting and selling what they find. This is just one of the many community groups that partner with Sangam which provides informal educational opportunities to improve the conditions for local residents.

Perhaps more than any of the other three world centres, Sangam immersed the Canadians in a foreign but fascinating culture. “We ate primarily vegetarian during our time in India, went sari shopping, experienced henna painting and had dinner with a traditional Indian family, my favourite activity,” Wright said. Some of her observations included an amazing number of new vehicles and motorcycles, the lack of bicycle traffic and motorized rickshaws. “We saw very few old vehicles except the city buses and trucks, they’re all old,” she said. “And other than the smell, I really enjoyed India.” After leaving Sangam, the group flew to Delhi then bused it to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal. Again they left dormitory life behind in favour of a fivestar hotel. Although fascinated by the culture, architecture and people of India, Wright say experiencing

the wonder of the Taj Mahal was amazing. Next stop was Zurich, Switzerland where they were back in early spring conditions in mid-March. Back to warm clothing and snow. The third world centre is actually the first one established in 1932 in Adelboden, Switzerland nestled in the Swiss Alps with a focus on providing an outdoor experience for visitors. Again the Canadians settled into dorm-style accommodations. There’s activities fit with the focus including hikes, a trip up the mountain on a cog train (a steep terrain, rack and pinion railway) and boat rides on local lakes enhanced their overall experience. “It was good to be back with more familiar food and more English-speaking people,” Wright said. “But everywhere people have been so friendly and helpful, its been a joy to travel.” They flew the last leg of their world centre tour to London where they

spent five days at the PAX Lodge, the last of the world centres (another world centre is being considered on the African continent but will be a mobile centre). The focus of this centre is cultural and historical and the ladies were ready to discover United Kingdom’s past. Visits to the Tower of London, the Apple recording studios (Beatles fame) and service programs with local girl guides on various clean up efforts kept the Canadians busy. “It was the first rain and hail we experienced on the entire trip.” However, it was now time to return home. Although ready to sleep in her own bed, Wright still basks in the glow of her 37-day grand world centre tour and all the memories and thousands of pictures of an unforgettable journey. She won’t be idle too long as another tour with the same tour guide is planned for Newfoundland and Labrador.

A book with lessons for everyone Being a volunteer at the Canadian Cancer Society, I wanted to read the book The Fault in our Stars by John Green, to give me a better perspective and some knowledge into things I wasn’t aware of. What it taught me was beyond what I even imagined. I want to describe everything I learned and hope you see even a tiny fraction of what this story means. Everyone is fighting a battle. This is something I already knew but the book definitely brought more light into it. It’s interesting when you get to know someone and slowly their story starts to fill the pages

Ivana Topic

Cancer Clips of your life. You start to learn the struggles people are going through. We are all flawed, we have all lost and none of us are perfect. This story makes you realize that your friends and family are put on this earth to help you. That it’s okay to speak your fears and let

others help you. Maybe you think you can get through a certain situation alone. I believe that you can, but just because you can doesn’t mean you should. If you have good people in your life, appreciate them, let them be there and be there for them. The hardest lesson I learned is you have to let go of the things not meant for you. Life isn’t fair sometimes and no matter how much you plan your life, the universe doesn’t have your agenda. Overall, this story taught me that we are not immortal, at any age, with any kind of diet and

with any religion. It is so important to appreciate the small moments and not let what we can’t control hold us down. It taught me to not be afraid of struggle because it’s an inevitable part of life. You will never know what the world has coming for you. But be strong. You have more in you than you believe. What is the point of being alive if you don’t at least try to do something remarkable? – John Green Ivana Topic is a volunteer with Canadian Cancer Society, Quesnel branch and regular Observer columnist.

Help Hope Air provide service in Quesnel ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter A small group of passionate recipients of the services provided by Hope Air in Quesnel are on a quest to raise $10,000 to help other people access the amazing assistance offered by this Canadian charity. Hope Air provides free flights to low income families who need medical treatment far from home. In 2014, 25 people in Quesnel used the services of

Hope Air for a total of 113 one-way flights. Lynn and Terry Worden, who appreciated the assistance of Hope Air in their time of need, have now set up a fundrazr, crowd-funding site where people can donate to help raise the $10,000 (40 flights) for Quesnel residents to utilize Hope Air. The couple are Hope Air Ambassadors and take every opportunity to spread the word. The fundrazr site has already received $595 towards the goal of $10,000, that’s about

six per cent and Terry and Lynn are optimistic they can reach the target. Although Quesnel residents can access Hope Air services regardless of this campaign, Terry and Lynn are determined our small, generous community will do its share to help this charity remain viable and continue to provide the vital services so many families require right across the country. August 23, 1955 ~ May 26, 2015 Murray died peacefully at home following a difficult battle with a brain tumour. He leaves behind his partner of 32 years, Janet Allen, his two sons, Henry and Sparky, his sister, Robin, of Leavenworth, Washington, and his mother, Doreen, of Gibsons, B.C. Murray was predeceased by his father, Robert, and his brother, Terry. Murray was raised in North Vancouver, the third child in a loving and creative family. He learned to play guitar from his father at an early age, and his love of music as well as the outdoors was cultivated during family campouts with the Unitarian Church. Moving to the Cariboo in the late 70s, Murray took to and stuck with the lifestyle he found there. He and Janet raised their family and developed a successful organic market garden and sheep operation along the banks of the Quesnel River at Gravelle Ferry; he was a founding member of the Quesnel Farmers’ Market. Murray was also a very capable woodworker, but a reluctant plumber. Murray celebrated and documented his love of the area, its people and his lifestyle through writing, performing and recording music. He gained local fame for his music, and there was not a hall from Hixon to 100 Mile that Murray had not played at for dances, weddings and parties. Murray has left a legacy among his many friends through his music but also through his quiet integrity and a life well-lived. His kids will remember him for his love of the land, his honesty, his love of music, and his encouragement of their passions and endeavors. He was extremely lucky to have a huge group of loving friends in the Cariboo and throughout the province -- a reflection of his fine character. His family would like to thank all those dear friends and neighbours who have pitched in to help since Murray’s diagnosis in 2012. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 13, at the Occidental Hotel, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

CAPSULE COMMENTS

Marcus Paine gave one local resident a thrilling ride during a brief stopover in Quesnel. Contributed photo

Confessions of a thrill junkie H

e flew his open air airplane all the way from Tuscon Arizona, to Anchorage and Valdex, Alaska to do a couple of shows before flying all the way back to California. All of this was completed in a 2 – 3 week period. And, he still found time to stop in Quesnel for a visit. You can follow Marcus Paine’s amazing feats on his Facebook page – just Google Marcus Paine, sit back and enjoy the read. You will not be disappointed. While in our fair city, I had the opportunity to meet this incredible pilot and I walked away thinking how I would love him to be a favourite uncle – so calm, steady, knowledgeable and he fixes things. Someone you would feel comfortable learning from. Let me tell you how my adventure with Paine began. The idea of doing aerobatic maneuvers in a World War I biplane sounds unsettling to the average person. After all, the workings of the plane are governed by a system of pushrods and pulleys. The bottom wing appears to be a canvas-wrapped rib cage and the cock pit is open air. This is the office and day job of Alaskanborn aerobatic pilot Paine, a seasoned veteran of the sky with more than 20 years experience, 10 years in air shows alone.

Paine has four biplanes he uses for the different acts he has on the road (or in the air rather). All of his planes are used in various capacities, including a wing walker; an aerobatic as well as his stall-out stunt show. All this information and reassurance is forgotten as you strap yourself into this culvert with wings and begin to taxi down the runway. However, when Paine’s calm, smooth baritone voice comes over the radio communicating with air traffic control, I think to myself “this man should be doing radio or voice over work” and I immediately settle down. We do a casual flight around Quesnel as I snap pictures with my cell phone camera that I hold with a death grip for fear of dropping it to the earth thousands of feet below. I am flying in an open air cockpit after all. Death grip aside, it is an incredible serene sight of my hometown that I have never seen from this view and with such a close relationship to the elements. “We’ll do a buzz over main street then land at the airport.” Paine informs me over the radio. “Any chance we can do one or two of those flippies?” I ask with excitement. “Sure” he responds and upside down we go. Paine banks, turns and rolls the plane through the sky

giving me yet another breathtaking perspective on my home town. Upside down and a few thousand feet above Quesnel I cheer and holler with exhilaration, the whole experience leaves me with one definitive thought: “I want to do this again!” Paine is performing at Skyfest 2015, July

31 – Aug. 2, mark it on your calendars. You will definitely not want to miss this guy. – Submitted by thrill junkie Martin MacDonald Tickets (adult, youth, family and weekend camping package) for Skyfest 2015 are available at Circle ‘S’ Western Wear, the Tourist Bureuu or online at

with Lee-Anne Williams B.Sc. (Pharm) In some European, Asian and Caribbean countries if you feel you need an antibiotic, you can just go into a pharmacy and ask for it….no prescription required. The drug may not be the right one for that infection or it may be a viral infection which is unresponsive to antibiotics. This can cause overuse and contribute to antibiotic resistance. We mentioned in this column last year about a unique method of treating a potent bacterial infection caused by Clostridium difficile. This is an infectious diarrhea which can kill. The method is called fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). It involves the introduction of donor stools into the rectum of the patient. It was successful in about 90% of cases. Sounds kind of “icky” but it’s effective. Protect your skin even if you are spending the day in the shade. Direct radiation from the sun is the most powerful but you can receive UV radiation from reflected rays from surfaces like sand, water, concrete or even grass. So use your sunscreen on a sunny day even if you are spending it in the shade. Stress is all around us and we can choose how we react to it. If someone cuts us off in traffic, we can choose to smile tolerantly and let it go or get into a rage. Tolerance is a virtue. The opposite can be very damaging. ASSAI expansion The provincial government is expanding its successful After School Sport and Arts Initiative (ASSAI) with up to $150,000 in annual funding for children shared by three new communities: the Gold Pan City, Fort St. James and Lillooet. The expansion of the ASSAI program means that even more kids will enjoy the many benefits of the program and will be given the tools to help develop healthy lifestyles, grow their talents, discover their passions and better their selfesteem. Funded by the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, ASSAI currently receives $2 million annually to support children who otherwise may not have access to organized sport and arts activities in their communities. The initiative’s programs aim to help students develop skills that contribute to a healthy life through creative thinking

and physical activity. At the same time, students develop confidence in their abilities and a stronger connection to their schools, classmates, program leaders and community. The program is supported by the Directorate of Agencies for School Health (DASH), which provides resources for program planning and connects local programs with training and partnership opportunities and assesses the health and learning outcomes for students. ASSAI is an integral piece of the puzzle when it comes to helping B.C.’s youth. “We are so proud to support the After School Sport and Arts Initiative, and delighted that it can now be offered in three more communities,” Cariboo North MLA and Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. Coralee Oakes said. “This expansion will result in hundreds more

The ASSAI expansion announcement took place at Ecole Baker elementary. children participating in this amazing program that both promotes healthy lifestyle through physical activity and facilitates creative expression through the arts.” “We are very pleased to offer the After School Sport and Arts Initiative for students in the Quesnel School District,” SD28 superintendent SueEllen Miller said.

“Locating these programs in their local schools will provide an opportunity that many students might not have previously been able to access. We believe the After School Sport and Arts programming will enhance the connections students have with their school and peers, provide an opportunity for students to discover

their artistic talents and develop skills for a healthy lifestyle.” “DASH is pleased to work with the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development to provide after-school programming that assists children in strengthening their social connections with both their peers and supportive adults,” DASH executive director Kathy

Cassels said. “Each after-school program provides increased opportunities to engage in physical and creative activities in familiar, safe settings. In doing so, children are supported in developing healthy behaviours they can put to use on the playground, at home, and in school. Their smiles say it all.”

Never Alone

Bred on the Canadian prairie, royalties from this rose go to cancer projects

T

his sounds like a strange partnership, the Growers Group of the Canadian National Landscape Association (CNLA) and the Canadian Football League Alumni Association (CFLAA) but together they have developed and promoted a beautiful, new, hardy shrub rose that will be available this spring. Winnipeg Blue Bomber Alumnus Lyle Bauer created the Never Alone Foundation after being diagnosed with throat cancer in 2004. Bauer remembers, “when I was first diagnosed with cancer, I can tell you that in spite of family and friends, I had never felt so alone and unsure of what the future would bring.” Bauer has now successfully fought the disease and conceived this national registered charity, to help other cancer patients feel they are Never Alone and hence the name for the newest Canadian shrub rose.

Royalties from the sale of these roses will go towards cancer projects in the province where they were purchased. The Never Alone rose was developed in Manitoba and further cultivated in the new research station in southern Ontario. This disease resistant, hardy (zone 2b) rose has dark green foliage. The flowers are very showy with a two tone bloom of red and white blooms. The centres are white and the edges red. It is a prolific bloomer on its own, but even more so if you remove the old spent flowers. I like the fact that it is a dwarf shrub, so it can be used as a ground cover or in a patio pot. The height is 6m ( 2 ft) and a spread of .3m(1 ft) making it a very manageable plant in a smaller landscape. If you do plant it in a patio pot, you will need to give it winter protection. I would suggest removing it from the pot

in the fall and planting it in the ground so the roots won’t freeze. I also love that this rose has Canadian content. It was bred and developed on the prairies and will definitely perform despite our

cold winters. Other roses that have been developed in that program include: the Parkland series, which includes Hope for Humanity, Morden Sunrise, and Winnipeg Parks among others. The latest series from the new Canadian research centre is the Canadian Artists series, including Emily Carr, Bill Reid, Campfire (to honour Tom Thompson) and Felix Leclerc. Remember that all roses prefer a sunny location to flower. A well-drained soil is recommended so you need to add one third organic matter (compost, peat moss) to two thirds of your existing soil. A small handful of bone meal mixed in to the bottom of the hole will encourage root growth. Fertilize every four weeks from April to July with a rose food such as 6-18-18. Survived by her sons, Randy (Gloria), Larry (Kelly), Ken, and grandchildren Blake (Erica), Mitch, Celeste.
