Share your memories of working at the packinghouse Stories and photos will join a national online exhibit. Are you an Applebox Belle? The Lake Country Museum invites the public to a community meeting Saturday, June 13, to share your own memories, or your mother’s or grandmother’s, of working in Lake Country’s early fruit packinghouses. The museum is working with the community to develop a local history exhibit for the Virtual
Museum of Canada. The exhibit, Applebox Belles: The Women of Lake Country’s Packinghouses, will present the experiences of the women working in Lake Country’s early packinghouses. The online exhibition will concentrate on the first women to work as fruit packers, their training, work conditions, and personal experiences. It will include firsthand accounts and interviews with these women workers and their descendants. The exhibit timeline
will include experiences in the first packinghouses of 1909-1911, during the First World War years, the changes in the fruit industry in the 1920s, and will continue through to the 1950s. The orchard industry and packinghouses are an integral part of Lake Country’s history, from the planting of the first seedlings in 1907 to the present day. In 1909, the Okanagan Valley Land Company and the Wood Lake Fruitlands Company planted extensive apple orchards alongside
the smaller, independent orchards, and the community became established as a fruit growing centre of the Okanagan. During the period 1909 through to 1936, eight packinghouses were in operation in Lake Country, employing a large number of men and women. Women generally worked as packers, whose job it was to wrap the apples in paper; place them carefully in a box, then send the box on a skid to the press man. The women received training in sizing
the fruit, wrapping and packing to box specifications, and in most cases quickly became adept at their work. Professional packers could pack 100 to 125 boxes per day of unsized fruit and up to 150 boxes per day of apples that had already been sized. Today, the Lake Country packinghouse is one of the major packinghouses in the Okanagan, still employing many women as packers. As an historic exhibit, Applebox Belles presents the story of the early years, before the chan-
ges in packinghouse operations and the style of apple boxes switching from wood to cardboard in the 1950s. Join museum staff and meet many others in the community with ties to the women who packed Lake Country fruit, Saturday, June 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Carr’s Landing Room, Municipal Building, 10150 Bottom Wood Lake Rd., in Lake Country. The Okanagan Correctional Centre (OCC) is getting prepared to start taking inmates in early 2017. Once looking to be built somewhere in or around Lake Country, the South Okanagan is already reaping the benefit of the construction jobs, soon to be followed by full-time ongoing work in corrections. A year after the facility broke ground, construction is full-steam ahead on the $200-million, high-security facility with completion and staffing set for September 2016. The 378-cell facility has the ability to house more than 500 inmates and is creating 240 fulltime correctional officer jobs, as well as jobs relating to the correctional centre’s construction. Osoyoos Indian Band Chief Clarence Louie was on hand for his second tour of the facility last week. The OCC is the first to be built on Indian Band land in North America. The unique opportunity is an economic driver for the band as well as the area Louie said.

“There’s not very many 200 million dollar projects, not many. They happen once a decade if that, so this is a huge project. Not just for the Osoyoos Indian Band but the entire South Okanagan,” he said. With the start for many of the corrections officer jobs a year and half away, Louie said the information sessions relating to the facility have been well attended. “There’s a number of young people looking to make a career move here. Even from some of our existing businesses, which is good,” he said. MLA for Chilliwack-Hope, Laurie Throness, was also taking a tour of the facility, which he says is creating hundreds of jobs already. “There’s going to be 378 cells in this institution, it will create 300 jobs,” Throness said. “About 60 will be auxiliary staff and 40 per cent of those jobs will be taken from the area here, so we’re going to hire locally as much as we can.” Throness said around 1,000 jobs are being created throughout the construction phase. —Penticton Western

A Kelowna aerospace company is part of a major consortium trying to land a huge multi-million dollar, 20-year contract to build, supply and maintain the next generation of Search and Rescue airplanes in Canada. KF Aerospace, formerly known as Kelowna Flightcraft, has teamed up with General Dynamics Canada, Aleria Aermacchi and DRS Technologies Canada to bid on the contract under the name Team Spartan. The federal government recently issued a request for proposals from interested groups. The contract would see replacement of the venerable Buffalo air-

craft, described by Canada’s Defence Minister Jason Kenny as the “workhorse” of the Canadian Air Force since the 1960s. Kenny, who visited KF Aerospace late last week to see firsthand the work the company does, said the all-encom-
passing contract would see the winning bidder build the planes, supply them to the Air Force for Search and Rescue missions, maintain them over the life of the contract and train pilots to fly them. “It’s the way procurement is going these days,” said Kenny of the all-encompassing contract, which is expected to be awarded in 2016 . “We are trying to bundle in a life-time warranty.” KF Aerospace is no stranger to federal government contracts, It is currently in the last year of a five-year contract to maintain the Air Force’s search and rescue Buffalo planes, as well as its smaller Twin Otter search and rescue
aircraft. The Buffalos are stationed at airforce bases across Western and Central Canada, including at the Comox Air Force base on Vancouver Island. Hercules aircraft are used by Search and Rescue in Eastern Canada. The new contract would replace both the Buffalo and the Hercules across the country, and KF Aerospace, as its part of the consortium, would handle the maintenance of the new planes. The new planes, models of which are already in service elsewhere in the world, would be built by Italian company Aleria Aermacchi.

Father of MP fined for misconduct KATHY MICHAELS
The father of a local Conservative MP has been fined by the Law Society of B.C. for writing himself into a client’s will. For two breaches of professional conduct Penticton lawyer Charles Louis Albas—father to Okanagan Coquihalla MP Dan Albas—has been ordered by the society to pay a $7,000 fine, as well as $1,736.25 in legal costs. “There is no evidence that he exerted pressure on his client or that the proposed gift to himself was anything other than her true testamentary wishes,” reads the decision from the three-person panel. However, they explain in the decision there are two cases where Albas should not have overnseen the writing of a will
he was the beneficiary of, and that’s where he ran afoul of the law society. “In both instances he took steps to benefit himself directly or indirectly without ensuring that his client had independent legal advice,” they wrote. “This is a serious breach of duty to a client.” According to the agreed statement of fact, Albas was the legal representative of a woman referred to throughout the law society document as FC. She asked him to prepare a will that left half her estate to Shiner’s Hospitals and half to Albas, and it was executed in February 2009, witnessed by his receptionist and legal assistant. In 2013, new rules of conduct prohibiting lawyers from preparing wills in which they receive gifts came into play, so
Albas, with the consent of FC, agreed to have a third party write a new will. He chose a lawyer with whom he shared office space to do the work, but that lawyer did not direct the preparation of the will or take on responsibility for its execution. Albas then went about preparing a new will that instead named his wife as the beneficiary of half of FC’s estate. He took the document to FC, but she never signed it and in July 2013 she was committed under the Mental Health Act. Albas was able to get FC released when he wrote a letter to a hospital on her behalf, but in September 2013 she retained a new lawyer. That lawyer wrote to Albas demanding that Albas “cease any further contact or communica-
tion with FC.” Once the matter reached the law society, Albas admitted to his misconduct, which the panel said bode well. It didn’t, however, negate the missteps he made. “The importance of ensuring the public’s confidence in the integrity of the legal profession cannot be overstated when determining an appropriate disciplinary action,” they wrote. “Most members of the public require a will. Many of them will entrust the preparation of a will to the lawyer that they know personally. They should be entitled to rely on their lawyer to act in their best interests. Given the vulnerability of clients, the lawyer must not accept gifts from a client without ensuring that that client has received independent legal advice.”

B.C. goes long with LNG bid O pposition politicians were outraged over the B.C. government’s latest effort to secure its first major liquefied natural gas deal, announced last week. Premier Christy Clark, Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman and Finance Minister Mike de Jong signed agreements with Pacific Northwest LNG for a long-term gas royalty structure that could run for 30 years. The government says the deal guarantees minimum royalty revenue for the province, while the investors increase their revenue if the spread between gas prices in North America and Asia increases during the term. Pacific Northwest is a partnership of some of the biggest investors and gas customers: Malaysian state giant Petronas, its Canadian subsidiary Progress Energy, Chinese state firm Sinopec, Indian Oil Corp. and Japan Petroleum.
BC Views
Tom Fletcher These corporate giants will review a project development agreement, and if they approve, Clark will convene the legislature to approve changes that would compensate them if the new LNG income tax increases. Environmental changes such as a “discriminatory” carbon tax increase or greenhouse gas regulations on LNG would also trigger compensation. Future changes to general carbon tax or corporate income tax rates would not. NDP leader John Horgan warned that “too much lolly” is being of-
fered, with no word of job guarantees for B.C. or a deal with First Nations at the proposed site near Prince Rupert. “My biggest concern is that we’re tying the hands of future governments because a desperate government made commitments that they over-promised on and now they want to get a deal at any cost,” Horgan said. Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver called it “shocking and irresponsible,” repeating his prediction that the global market is swimming in gas and will never support huge green-field projects across B.C. For the investors, it’s like a mortgage. There are “subjects” to be removed before the deal closes, and this is a proposed $36 billion mortgage for pipelines, LNG processing and shipping facilities. This isn’t just a political dispute. For example, Progress has drilled about 500 gas wells in northeastern B.C., and
Petronas took it over with this development in mind. Without exports, B.C.’s whole gas industry is looking at a bleak future of low prices and demand. Petronas delayed its investment decision to this year and cited exactly these concerns, certainty on taxation and royalties beyond the election cycle. With that in hand, their obstacles remain federal environmental approval and a revenue sharing deal with a First Nation to host a terminal. Pacific Northwest CEO Michael Culbert notes that answers to questions posed by the Lax Kw’alaams First Nation were submitted to federal regulators only days before they started voting on a $1 billion share of LNG proceeds over 40 years. The vote was a resounding no, despite a redesign that put pipelines on a suspension bridge over the most sensitive salmon habitat. Culbert suggests
that given some time to examine environmental mitigation work, that answer may change. Does aboriginal title offer a veto over projects like this? According to the recent Supreme Court of Canada decision on the Tsilhqot’in case, the short answer is no. Objections could be overridden if governments determine a project is in the interest of the greater public. Talks have taken place with 19 First Nations affected by pipelines and facilities, and 14 have agreed. While they continue with Lax Kw’alaams and other Tsimshian Nations on the coast, it’s worth recalling that others are not so reluctant. The Nisga’a Nation has identified four sites as suitable for LNG terminals with a shorter pipeline route to the coast than Prince Rupert. pel of John—which begins: “For God so loved the world…” Then a random thought struck me. What if it really is a code? What if 3:16 is a cryptic reference to a whole series of special messages? I already know that there’s another significant 3:16 in the evangelical vocabulary. Paul’s second letter to Timothy (even though scholars now agree it’s highly unlikely that Paul himself wrote it) declares, “All scripture is inspired by God…” Believers love quoting that verse to squelch any dispute about the Bible’s authority. After all, if the Bible derives its authority directly from God, who can challenge it? And it must come directly from God, because the Bible itself says so…. It’s a circular argu-

the environment at the same time. We are so blessed to be able to, in a matter of less than an hour, enjoy nature’s garden. For some it is racing around on a machine. For some it is backpacking with horses or on foot. For others it is to wonder at the diversity and harmony of the natural biological processes. Let’s honour each other’s interests and especially honour nature.
Spoiler alert: No code is needed for the Bible TAYLOR FROM A4 ment, but that doesn’t seem to matter. So I started chasing some other 3:16’s. 1 Samuel looks good— that’s the young boy learning to say “Here I am,” to his calling. But 2 Samuel 3:16 is about King David abducting another man’s wife. • Genesis 3:16 tells us that women will suffer pain in giving birth. • Joshua 3:16 assures
us that water doesn’t always flow downhill. • Isaiah 3:16 calls the daughters of Israel haughty, and promises to cover them with scabs. Ecclesiastes sees wickedness everywhere. Lamentations offers the image of teeth grinding on gravel. And Habakkuk expects a day of calamity. The New Testament looks a little more promising: • Matthew 3:16 –the Spirit of God settles on
Jesus. • Mark 3:16 –Jesus appoints twelve disciples. • Luke 3:16—John the Baptist promises that a more powerful messenger will come. But then the 3:16 references go downhill again. • Romans 3:16—Paul promises ruin and misery. • 1 Timothy 3:16—religion is a mystery. • Hebrews 3:16— everyone was rebellious.

On a less than pleasant note I just have to say we humans are still putting what I feel is undue pressure on our ecosystem and natural beauty in the forests in the name of recreation. • 2 Peter 3:16 –Paul’s letters are hard to understand. • Revelation 3:16—I will spit you out for being lukewarm. Indeed, if 3:16 is significant, God apparently didn’t have a message at all in Ezra, Esther, Psalms, Hosea, Amos, Jonah, Micah, Haggai or Zechariah, because the third chapter has no 16th verse. Ditto for Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, the letters to Titus, Philemon, and Jude, and the second and third letters of John. I must be doing this wrong. Maybe 3:16 is the wrong code. Maybe, like the people in The Imitation Game who broke the German “Enigma” code in World War II, I need to analyze every possible combination and sequence of letters, until I crack the cipher. Or maybe there isn’t a coded message at all. Maybe there’s just a story, the ultimate story, of humans trying to understand their relationship with Holy Oneness. The Bible is a great book. In the western European world, it is the most influential book of all time. But it is not an encrypted code-book that needs to be deciphered. Author Jim Taylor lives in Lake Country. rewrite@shaw.ca

KATHY MICHAELS As the Kelowna Rockets hockey team faces off for each of its games in the 2015 Memorial Cup tournament, one outcome can be counted on. Super-fan Reagan Krivsky is cheering the team on from the stands at the Pepsi Collisée in Quebec City, just like she does at every home game in Prospera Place. “They probably don’t know that I’m here,” said the avid fan from her hotel room in Quebec City last Thursday before the tournament started. “I don’t know any of (the players) personally but they’ve probably heard about ‘the really crazy lady.’” Crazy is a bit severe, but fandom is a task Krivsky takes on with gusto. Her fingernail and toe polish is Rockets themed, her house is decked out in Rocket paraphernalia, and she’s adopted a “lucky duck” that she named Rocket. And then there’s her wardrobe. “I have more Rockets clothes than…well, than any other clothes,” she said, laughing. She even has some rituals that have taken her through each game since ’97, when she and her husband Louie started being season ticket holders. “At 5:30 p.m., we’re there. I park in the same parking spot, where the Dolphins are, then I have to go got the casino, get an egg salad sandwich and an ice-tea,” she said. “Then I put $20 in the machine, visit some friends in the smoke pit and go to the game.” During the away games she attends, things are a bit more loosey

And, in case there’s any doubt, she wears a Rockets’ jersey for each and every game. For most people Krivsky’s dedication would likely be too onerous a commitment of both time and money. This year she had to take two trips to Portland, Oregon to watch “her boys” rise above the fray, and then
there’s the Quebec trip presently at hand, which she expects to be “10 days of fun.” None of these trips are funded by the Rockets in any way. “The Hamiltons have just brought an amazing product to Kelowna,” she said, rationalizing her dedication. “And Junior Hockey is the best hockey you are going to find. These guys are playing to get all that and a bag of
chips.” The game has changed since she embarked on her mission of superfandom. “It’s gotten less physical and more

Baby sitting the grandkids part of fans’ support of their team For hardcore Kelowna Rockets fans Shane and Jennifer Klassen, their support for the WHL team will actually have them making a trip to Swift Current to babysit their grandkids. That’s because their daughter, Sheila Haasdyk, was the grand prize winner of a package that includes tickets for two for the semi-final and final of this year’s Memorial Cup in Quebec City, a contest sponsored by MasterCard, the title sponsor of the annual Canadian junior hockey championship.
“My husband and I are diehard Rockets fans,” said Jennifer. “We will be taking our Rockets jersey for our daughter to wear at the games because they have not lost this year when my husband has worn it to games.” While her daughter has become a loyal fan of the Swift Current Broncos, the WHL team in the SasAARON BELL/CANADIAN HOCKEY LEAGUE katchewan comKELOWNA Rockets captain Madison Bowey (right) durmunity of 15,000, ing the ceremonial opening face off at the 2015 Master Card her mom says with the Broncos out of Memorial Cup last Friday in Quebec City. be pulling for the Rockets in Quebec City. “My daughter was raised in Rutland, went to Pearson Elementary, Rutland Middle School and Rutland Señior. She was born in Calgary and we moved to Kelowna when she was about 21/2, but she always considers Kelowna her hometown,” Jennifer said. The other connection to the Rockets this playoff season came from the Broncos final home game of the season. The
players gathered at centre ice to thank the fans for their support, and the played gave up their sticks, which they had autographed, to lucky fans in the stands. Jennifer’s grandson Daschel, 5, was given the stick belong to Carter Rigby, who played for the Rockets until being traded to Swift Current early in the season. “What are the chances of that happening. It’s such a small world,” she laughed. The Klassens have

“It’s a lot of fun. We have a group of friends who have been going to these games with us for 10 to 15 years and we’ve been to seven or eight Memorial Cups .” As to whether or not they’ve been investing their time and money on Cup winners, the Krivskys are cautious about discussing their team’s odds. “I think they have a very good shot at winning,” said Louie. “They are at the very least as good as any team there, and if they play to their potential they will win.” Reagan is even more circumspect. “My little mantra for all this is, I am fortunate enough to watch the top four teams in Canada, and the boys I have watched over the last year may soon to be the No. 1 team in Canada,” she said. Kelowna Capital News sports reporter Warren Henderson travelled with the team to Quebec City. to women in business
Making a push to advance women in business world Advancement of women in the business world has become the driving force behind a new movement in B.C. Called Women as a Catalyst for Growth in our province, the movement wants to open new frontiers for women in the business world. The idea began to formulate about five years ago when Jill Earthy, the B.C./Yukon director of futurpreneur Canada, and Laurel Douglas, executive director of the Women’s Enterprise Centre
based out of Kelowna, created a new group called the Web Alliance. The idea was to bring together what would turn out to be 25 different business networks and individuals, mostly in the Lower Mainland, to help support the advancement of women in different industries. From that grassroots support group came an extensive B.C. Action Plan for generating economic success opportunities for women. It is the
follow up to the B.C. Economic Forum: Women as a Catalyst for Growth held in Vancouver last fall, attended by more than 450 people. Follow up conferences on a smaller scale will also take place this month in Kelowna, Victoria, Prince George and Prince Rupert. Earthy said the concept here is to not just create an action plan that goes nowhere, but to develop ideas

Have a hoot while learning Study serves as catalyst for change how to care for, ride a horse ADVANCE FROM PAGE 10
The Tranquille Farms Training Centre is offering the opportunity for women to bond with horses. Called The Saddle Bags, the group was created by Tranquille owner Lorraine Pelletier Andrus to offer older women a chance to learn how to care for a horse, ride them safely and to generally build up their confidence being around them. “It’s a chance for ladies to come out to our facility and learn how to brush, bath, walk or ride horses, a chance for like-minded women to socialize and share common interests or life experiences,” said Pelletier Andrus. She said interest points range from women who have raised their families and are looking at new interests to fill their leisure time, to women who grew up on a farm, moved to an urban setting to raise their family and are looking to reconnect to their rural roots. “It’s a growing trend we are seeing across Canada in the horse industry, where women have an interest in learning how to ride or be around horses again, and have a blast doing it in a safe environment,” she said. The group had their first meeting May 20, and the age interest has ranged from 96 to 29 so far. It costs $20 to register for the program, and there is a $10 drop-in fee for each session, which are held every second Wednesday. “It gives women a chance to have a night out with no kids and be outdoors doing something that is very affordable,” said Pelletier-Andrus. “And there is no prerequisite to have had
1
any past experience around horses.” Pelletier Andrus tells the story of one local 84-year-old senior who came to the farm to watch the horses being trained. She mentioned to Pelletier Andrus that her bucket list wish was to be on a horse once more before she died, but she was resolved to her reality that “you don’t always get what you want in life.” Hearing this, Pelletier Andrus offered to put her on a well trained horse, with a little convincing on their part, and rigged up a horse mounting device for her to get in the saddle. “She was raised on a farm in Saskatchewan but left the farm to get married, raise a family. She had just lost her husband, and at her age had written off the idea of ever riding a horse again. But we managed to get her on the horse, and it was quite an emotional moment for her. “She just wanted to sit on the horse at that point, and you could tell that experience was a relived memory she would never forget.” Pelletier Andrus said being around horses and feeling confident in their midst is a great relief from of stress from life’s challenges, as she calls it a chance to improve your individual “health and wellbeing with a horsey twist.” “It’s about having fun in a farm atmosphere riding and learning how to look after horses, which is something because of the cost to have a horse or not living on a rural property, many women don’t get a chance to do,” said Pelletier Andrus. For more information about how to register and the location of Tranquille Farms, check out the website tranquillefarms.com.

that are followed up. “This is an action plan for change as our economy changes and the role that women play in its development continues to evolve,” Earthy said. She added the focus is to create that change across the province, not just in the urban centres. “There will be another larger convention in Vancouver which will be a kind of check-
in to see what progress has been made on the action report and to keep the momentum moving forward,” she aid. Among the recommendations from the action plan include support to help women overcome barriers preventing them from reaching their full career and economic potential; recommendations for action that governments, industry and individuals can take in B.C.; growing the number of women in sen-
ior leadership; attracting more women entrepreneurs; and growing opportunities for women in non traditional job and emerging sectors. “The era of the glass ceiling in the business world for women has turned into a sticky floor,” Earthy said. She says eradicating that sticky floor is not just about promoting the cause of women in the business world, but improving the overall economy.

Growing a business takes more leading than doing
DARCY NYBO

Karen Luniw, chief executive officer of attractmorenow.com, has been helping women empower themselves for over 20 years. She is a mindset expert specializing in business, money, and relationships, and is the creator of the very popular iTunes podcasts, The Law of Attraction Tips and Business Attraction.
She has managed to create a highly successful business by helping others succeed. Luniw has seen quite a few changes over the years when it comes to women in business. “I see more women moving into business and being successful at it,” she said from her Kelowna office. “There are so many great role models out there now of women who have been successful in business, it has now
become more commonplace.” Luniw coaches business people from around the world, and has found a common thread in the women she coaches. “Women are reaching for higher goals than they were before and in some cases they are the main breadwinners in the family. Through this last decade many people have taken a hit in their employment. “Many men are waiting

Joanne Van Ee Okanagan Centre Yoga
Last year I discovered a different style of yoga that has changed the way I teach and the way I move in everyday life. The YogAlign method was created by a massage therapist who had injured herself doing yoga. She herself was treating many people who had also injured themselves in yoga so she developed the YogAlign method, which creates strength and length while keeping the spine in neutral alignment preserving the natural curves. I stopped teaching my previous style and adopted YogAlign as I knew there was a great potential for injury doing standard yoga. I couldn’t in all conscience teach that way again knowing what I know now. Come and join me for a rejuvenating class that feels like you’ve had a full body make over. Classes are held at the beautiful, historic Okanagan Centre Hall.

out the employment drought, while the women are moving ahead and becoming the major bread winners in the family.” As traditional roles blur in business, so does the types of businesses where women are excelling. “Traditional roles are changing in the workplace. We see more women in financial sectors and more men in health care and it doesn’t upset the status quo in most areas.” Luniw believes any woman, in any business, at any stage of their life can be very successful. “Women need to believe in themselves when it comes to business. They don’t need to look for permission from others,” Luniw said. “I’ve worked with so many businesswomen from self-starters to high-level executives who were still looking for permission and

acceptance and not necessarily being themselves. As soon as they move out of that mind set, things really took off for them.” “The most important thing is to be true to yourself and
to listen to your intuition. Go with your gut. “You don’t have to reinvent the wheel, and at the same time you don’t have to follow everyone else’s rules on how to get ahead.” According to Luniw, it is very possible to create a very successful business in the six-figure range without having a huge staff, or high overhead, or large backers. “Traditional business models are changing. There are people who have built businesses from their homes and expanded them. You can serve people all over the world and connect with them in a whole different way now,” she said. “Then as you grow your business, you need to learn how to delegate and give up control of the little things and focus on your larger vision. You have to always remember that growing a business is more about leading than doing.”

Chamber of Commerce’s Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness “Competitiveness is a term often used but not always understood as it is tough for government, and business for that matter, to fully identify what exactly hinders our productivity,” said BC Chamber of Commerce president and CEO John Winter at the release of the Canadian Chamber’s Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness. The Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness list for 2015 is an initiative the Canadian
Chamber network undertook starting back in 2012. Its intention is to draw attention to the numerous barriers that are holding back Canada’s full economic potential and to urge all levels of governments to act more swiftly in increasing our country’s ability to compete globally. “The Canadian Chamber Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness is a helpful tool to focus government and business on what is impacting
our global competitiveness and start to come up with solutions that will drive further economic growth in our provincial and national economies,” Winter said. Addressing the Top 10 barriers will go a long way towards restoring Canada’s competitiveness. The Canadian Chamber is calling on its own membership, on governments, on educators, on labour organizations and others to tackle and overcome
these barriers. Effectively addressing these 10 barriers will sharpen Canada’s competitive edge and allow us to prosper in the global economy. “Since launching this initiative, we have made great progress in furthering our competitiveness agenda on a number of issues. However, the barrier our members continue to identify as being the greatest impediment to the success of Canadian business is the skills gap,” said Can-
Katherine Enger
adian Chamber president and CEO Perrin Beatty. “There is a lot of work ahead,” Beatty said. “The federal government and several provincial and territorial governments have also named this issue as the country’s biggest challenge. We need to work together and make real progress in 2015. ” The following barriers from the 2015 Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness have been raised as particular issues
of concern by the BC Chamber of Commerce network:
• SILOS IN SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
Canada is not producing enough graduates with the skills needed for its economy. In B.C., this is particularly acute as the province expects one million jobs created over the next decade. As a result of dramatic restrictions, the Temporary Foreign Work-

Dr. Lina Jung may be the busiest woman in dentistry these days. She has an 18 year history in Lake Country, and continues to operate her clinic – Winfield Dental Centre. She is the ‘go to’ doctor in the area for TMJD and craniofacial pain, and receives referrals from local dentists. Her focus as a General Practice dentist includes cosmetic, invisible orthodontics, and restorative dentistry. In Kelowna, she has been a General Dentist at the B.C. Cancer Agency which has expanded to the B.C. Cancer Agency in Vancouver. Speaking last week, she had just finished rounds at Vancouver General Hospital in the Bone Marrow Transplant ward completing oral health assessments. She may be bringing some of these skills home for our Okanagan cancer patients who find travel to Vancouver too onerous. In addition, she is active in the B.C. Jessica Wales Veterinarian
For five years now I have been practicing the ‘art and science’ of veterinary medicine in Lake Country as a small animal veterinarian. We are a family run business and take pride in offering friendly and professional services to the local community. I have come to really enjoy building relationships with my clients and their animal companions. Having grown up here, it has been rewarding to have the opportunity to get to know the community from a professional perspective. The human-animal bond is integral to the wellness of many people and being able to contribute in a meaningful way is important to me. High quality medical care involving diagnostic skills and treatment is the cornerstone of my profession. However, my time in practice has also highlighted for me the need for sound business management strategies in successfully delivering veterinary medical services. Balancing the delivery of medicine, client communication and education while managing staff and ensuring responsible fiscal operations is where the ‘art and science’ interact!

ic mulch. They are sturdy, i pest-free, and have abun- s dant bloom. O Now is an excellent n time to mulch but it can s be done at any time in b the growing season. t Before mulching, it w is essential to remove all u weeds. Covering them with mulch just makes s them grow faster. s Soil must be moist be- s fore mulching. It is ex- l tremely difficult to moisten dry soil once it is d covered with mulch. t Annuals, perennials, d and ornamental grass- fi es can have a one to two a inch layer of mulch. All i need a good supply of nitrogen so are best with t nitrogen-containing a mulches such as Glen- m Grow (city yard waste s compost), OgoGrow i (city biosolids comt posted with wood waste) n or well-rotted manure. OgoGrow is the highest in nitrogen. Soil micro-organisms break these down to release nutrients that can be used by plants. As such, the mulch will need to be topped up most years. Lawns benefit from a half to one inch layer of mulch in early spring and/or the fall. This evenly feeds the lawn all season, enriches soil and reduces water use. Chemical fertilizers are not needed. Nature’s Gold, which contains OgoGrow, is sieved to a finer texture making it a good lawn mulch. It can also be used on garden beds. Shrubs and trees can be mulched with a three to four inch layer of the same materials or wood waste such as bark mulch or wood chips. These are carbon and break down more slowly so only need replenishing every two to three years. In between, mulch can be freshened up with a light raking. This disturbs any weed seeds. Keep mulch a few inches away from stems and trunks of shrubs and trees to avoid diseases and rodent damage. Vegetable gardens benefit from one to two inches of mulch. If you want to know what you are eating, I recommend making your own compost for food gardens. Reach Gwen Steele at Okanagan Xeriscape Association. okanaganxeriscape.org.

Keep your dogs off sports fields, school grounds, beaches this summer
Many outdoor sporting activities are in full swing in the Central Okanagan. Our municipal sports fields and school playing fields are busy most nights with team practises and on weekends with scheduled games. While it’s great to see so many families out and supporting an active lifestyle, dog owners should leave their dog at home. Central Okanagan dog owners are reminded that unless otherwise designated, all sports fields, school properties and beaches are off limits to dogs. “It’s not fair to the dog to bring them into an area where there are so many people and there’s so much activity taking place,” Regional District of the Central Okanagan communications
d
officer Bruce Smith said in a press release. “Dogs can get excited and there could be an unnecessary bite or other confrontation. As well, if you’re watching a sporting event, you aren’t giving your dog the attention it deserves and you may miss them leaving a deposit behind. No one likes to step in dog poo, especially in an area were so many people are gathered for healthy pursuits.” As available, dog control officers will pay special attention to sport fields and school properties. Anyone found with a dog in a prohibited area will receive a $100 fine. Responsible dog ownership involves having a current license on your pet, keeping it on a leash measuring two meters or less in length un-
less you’re in a designated off-leash park and in control of your dog at all times. Dog owners are responsible for picking up after their pet and properly disposing of any poop, which can be a public health concern. Dog owners who fail to pick up after their pet could face a fine of $150. All dog owners in the Central Okanagan are reminded that they must have a current license or they’ll be subject to a fine of $300 under the Responsible Dog Ownership Bylaw. There is zero tolerance for unlicensed dogs in the Central Okanagan. A license costs $20 for a dog that’s spayed or neutered, $60 if it isn’t. Purchase the license online at regionaldistrict.com or at the Regional District office,
1450 KLO Rd., at the Dog Pound, 860 Weddell Place, any municipal government office and at the Kelowna branch of the SPCA, 3785 Casorso Rd. One of the benefits of licensing a dog is the My Dog Matters rewards program. The card can be used for discounts and special services at more than 50 businesses listed on the mydogmatters.ca program website. Another incentive is that dogs with a current license get a one-time, free ticket home, should they end up at the Dog Pound. If your pet gets away contact the Dog Pound as quickly as possible as the Regional District is only required to hold a dog for up to 72 hours. Visit regionaldistrict. com/dogs.

Sex and the Kitty A single unspayed cat can produce 470,000 offspring in just seven years.
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of George Reeve on May 12th, 2015 in Edmonton, Alberta. Leaving to mourn are his wife Marlene and seven grown children, Lee, Kerry, Wendy, Brenda, Bonnie, Jordy and Carmen as well as their spouses, 12 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 2 brothers, their spouses and numerous nieces and nephews. George was born in Westlock, Alberta on July 21, 1928. He was a milkman, cement worker, and post office clerk in the Edmonton area before moving to Winfield in 1960. That is where he and Marlene raised their children and tended to their orchard (several different home’s with orchard’s throughout the years). George also worked for Vanguard and the Vernon Fruit Union at the two packing houses in Winfield. In 1987 George & Marlene moved back to Edmonton to be closer to George’s parents and siblings as well as a few of their children who had moved there. As per George’s request there will be no funeral but a small family gathering to celebrate his life.

Ask The Dentist! by Dr. Lina Jung, DDS
‘But I Brush My Teeth and it Still Hurts’ My 21 year old son is constantly holding his jaw and Q: grimacing when he drinks either hold or cold beverages. He says it is like an 'ice cream headache' and can't understand it. His teeth were always in decent shape when he lived at home because we paid for it. He's at college now, and the last time I visited I opened the closet and it looked like a bottle depot. There were flats of empty soda pop cans. He claims he brushes and flosses daily, so that cannot be the problem. Besides, he prefers diet colas. What do you suggest?
A:
I've witnessed similar cases with college 'kids' – whose oral health suffers while they are away getting their education. It is frequently self-induced with soft drinks and juices. The new energy drinks are the worst, in my opinion. Sugar is the enemy, and this should come as no surprise. In an average can of pop there can me as much as 6 teaspoons of sugar. Judging from the shopping carts I notice at the big box store, some people seem to consume more than their fair share. Your son probably does brush and hopefully floss regularly, but I suspect the enamel on his teeth is being eroded by the acid in his beverages. The hard surface of the enamel is becoming softer due to the acid in these drinks, and creating sensitivity to the dentin area of the tooth.

Why should I have a buyer agent? When someone tells me they are looking for
have someone who knows the area, does a
lot of business here, and often has already toured the home that you are looking for. Another benefit of having a buyer agent is that I often know about homes that are soon to be listed that are not on the MLS system yet. So what that means to you is that you have “insider information” so to speak, of the best opportunities in Lake Country. I follow a professionally developed buyer process that allows me to treat my clients professionally. My service includes confidentiality, instant information, insider advantage, active agent advantage which coordinates the whole entire experience into finding your perfect home.

If it is any consolation, in a recent study of adults dental erosion was found in 79% of the cases – so your son isn't alone. Fortunately, we can reduce further damage in our dental chairs – so I suggest he visit a dentist as soon as possible. If it gets much worse, the treatment options will be invasive and expensive. As with most things dental – it never gets less expensive to repair something than the present!

a home in Lake Country I take them under my wing. Having a buyer agent means you
Your enamel becomes softer and loses mineral content when you drink anything that is acidic. Normally, the pH balance in your mouth gets restored by your saliva, but if there is too much acid too frequently, it cannot do its job properly. Patients often say they only consume healthy products, like diet pop and fruit juices. The fruit juices can be equally as acidic and cause significant harm while the individual or their parent believes they are 'doing the right thing'. Anything with a pH value (measure of acidity) of below 5.5 can damage your teeth. This absolutely includes flavoured waters and just about everything else you see in that aisle at the supermarket. Just in case you are a convenience shopper, the big box stores now package some of them in 36 pack minimums!

What question would you like a qualified professional to answer?
I was busy preparing my famous onion dip for our May long family cookout and boy were my tears flowing! What causes that anyway?
Although there may be the off chance that your onion dip is so good that it brings those who gather to tears, the answer more likely lies in the chemical components of the vegetable. Within the cells of an onion are elements known as amino acid sulfoxides. When you cut into an onion and break down its cellular structure, these sulfoxides are now free to react with certain enzymes to produce a volatile sulfur compound known as propanethiol-S. This acidic substance is then able to waft towards our eyes in gaseous form and stimulate our reflexive tearing to wash away the irritant. From chilling your onions, to cutting them underwater, to donning your favourite pair of swim goggles prior to cutting, all of the tricks employed to reduce tearing are based on limiting the flow of this irritating sulfur compound toward our eyes. 49-9522 Main St. Lake Country 250-766-4240 www.lakecountryoptometry.ca

What is the difference between lender mortgage life insurance verses a personal life insurance plan?
Your family loves your home – but that mortgage! What would happen if you passed away early? Will your family be able to pay off that monster debt? The obvious answer is mortgage life insurance. Before you say yes to lender provided mortgage life insurance, consider this: do you want to cover your lender or yourself? Personal life insurance allows you to choose the beneficiary, choose the amount of coverage you would like, premiums remain stable and underwriting happens before you are approved. Lender mortgage insurance the beneficiary is the lender, coverage declines with the mortgage balance and underwriting happens post-mortem. There’s no doubt about it: Insurance to cover your mortgage is an absolute necessity to protect your home and family. Make sure you get the protection that is tailored to you, not your lender and is a perfect fit with your overall financial plan.
