The long-vacant Kootenay Hotel, which operated most recently as the Bigfoot Pub and Grill, is about to be resurrected. Building contractor Ralph Casemore purchased the building and adjacent parking lot from the Calgary owner last month and is now developing plans to create a multi-use property on Canyon Street. “This is mostly about revitalizing the downtown core,” Casemore said last week. His partner, Tanya Wall, said

the development will involve other business operators in the Creston Valley. “We have an idea of what we want to do with the building,” she said. “Our hopes and dreams are to build community partnerships, both by using local products and suppliers in construction, and eventually in the business itself.” Casemore said he and Wall had looked at the building, which has sat empty for about eight years. “We learned that it was for sale and there were other interested parties, but nothing firm,” he said. He made an offer and received a counteroffer, but his interest
was contingent on having a hazardous materials analysis. Western Canada Safety Services Ltd. conducted an inspection, taking 51 samples, and produced a 37-page report. “It wasn’t as bad as we thought,” Casemore said. Once he had quotes on the cost of abatement, he renegotiated the price and made the purchase. “We are well aware of all of the risks, and of all the work that needs to be done,” he said. “We are now working with an architect to create conceptual drawings.”

The interior of the two-storey building is a plan in progress. A wine bar/lounge is planned for the top floor, as is an artisans’ display and sales area. The main floor will contain some form of food and beverage service. Casemore is more certain about how the building will eventually look. “Red brick,” he smiled. “That is not negotiable. I have always wanted to see a red brick building downtown — Fernie and Nelson have them, but we don’t. It will be red brick with granite trim.” A bricklayer by trade, he estimates the exterior brick and trim work alone will take as much as three months. He said some interior walls will be brick, also.

$9.95 Specials 40-year career in community development in Canada and internationally. In the last 12 years, he has worked at the national level as president of two of Canada’s oldest volunteer organizations, Canada World Youth and Canadian Executive Service Organization, along with a six-year stint at the head of CBT.
“The first decision voters need to make is about the capacity of their MP to represent their riding in Ottawa,” he said. “Under Mr. Harper’s leadership MPs are expected to represent the party in the region. That needs to change. I accepted this challenge because
the Liberal party will allow me to be a strong voice in Ottawa for local issues. “If Justin Trudeau visits the riding he will be returning to a region he knows very well. If Stephen Harper visits Kootenay-Columbia it means he had to look at a map. That regional respect is critical.” Johnston said Canada has changed under a Conservative government. “There needs to be some myth busting about this government and its record,” he said. “The Conservative Party consistently presents itself as being the best in a number of areas but their record about what they are doing to Canada and its international reputation speaks to quite a different conclusion.” Along with Johnston, competing for the chance to represent Kootenay-Columbia are incumbent Conservative MP David Wilks, NDP candidate Wayne Stetski and the Green Party’s Bill Green. The constituency boundaries were changed in 2012 and it now extends westward to include Nelson, Salmo and Kaslo. Johnston will be introduced as the Liberal candidate for Kootenay-Columbia at a meeting at 7 p.m. June 6 at the Ramada Creston. The public is welcome to attend.
Casemore is approaching the development as a two-year project. “But we will start by cleaning up the parking lot and offering spaces for rent,” he said. “Then we will begin to remove some of exterior addons at the rear and paint over the graffiti to clean it up a bit.” Inspiration for the project, Wall said, has come from visits to other communities. On a visit to Oregon they saw a business model that was easy to envision for the old hotel. And in Sandpoint, the Pend d’Oreille Winery and Bistro Rouge Restaurant fired their imagination, as did some wine bars and lounges in Coeur d’Alene. Wall said the community is ripe for new development. Now the Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B director, she keeps close tabs on activity throughout the Creston Valley.
“I took part in the business walk last month and it was so encouraging. There were great, positive vibes,” she said. “And with co-operation between the Town of Creston and RDCK districts, we have a theme of growing together.” With cleanup scheduled for the summer and fall, Casemore said he expects construction to begin this fall. He is clearly excited by the prospect of creating a dramatic change to the downtown core. “I think it will encourage other businesses to invest and make changes. The prospects are really positive here.” He and Wall are adamant that the development is more than just a business investment. “This community has supported us in so many ways,” Wall said. “We believe that this project will have a positive effect on the downtown core.”

He makes it clear he is no fan of the Stephen Harper-led Conservative government. “My Canada engages with the rest of the world and is ready to play the active role it has historically played,” he said. “My Canada is a Canada that respects democracy and that encourages political dialogue and active citizen engagement. Entrepreneurs seeking votes for startup funds BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
After 10 weeks in Kootenay Employment Services’ Local Entrepreneurship Accelerator Program (LEAP), four prospective enterprises will have a chance to win startup funds next week — and the public will decide which one. A social enterprise launch party will run 7-9 p.m. June 10 at the Creston Hotel banquet room, where ticketholders will vote for a startup to receive cash—the proceeds of the tickets sold—and other prizes, including an iPad donated by Telus and a Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce membership. “The spirit of the event is basically that many in the community share a feeling that we need new business but there are few opportunities to help make it happen,” said organizer Laura Hannant. “This is a chance to get behind local entrepreneurs.” Guests will circulate throughout the room, hearing pitches from the four young entrepreneurs, who are interested in starting, among other things, a hostel and an ethical coffee roastery. They might pitch needing anything from money to a location to a partner, and the guests — after enjoying local wine and cheese — will use their tickets to vote after hearing from all four. LEAP is a partnership with Simon Fraser University (SFU),
and every idea is a business or non-profit geared toward social or environmental improvement. SFU has run the program on the Sunshine Coast and in Squamish, where ideas included a car share co-op, child care and a hops farm that employed adults with devel-

The program, Hannant said, was a 10-week boot camp and startup support group, helping people develop their ideas. “It’s friendly rather than fierce,” she said. “It’s been a really supportive process.” LEAP was modeled on a startup process born in the Silicon Valley. It helps enterprises get off the ground with minimal investments of money — and time. “Sometimes people sit on an idea for too long,” said Hannant. “This is a way for people to test their concept, stand up and own their idea, and engage their communities in making it happen.” It’s also a way for the public to see what others in the community
are capable of. “We’ve got a lot of hidden skills and talent in our valley
— that means lots of potential to unleash,” said Hannant, Tickets include a drink ticket

MLA wants government to create poverty reduction act BY WILL JOHNSON Nelson Star
Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall recently made her third attempt at convincing the B.C. government to introduce a poverty reduction and economic inclusion act, but she’s not hopeful the government will be receptive to the idea. “B.C. has had the highest overall child poverty rates for the last 13 years, and has had the highest poverty rate for a decade. It’s hard to understand how this has happened,” said Mungall. Her act is a piece of enabling legislation that would give the government direction in tackling the complex issue. An anti-poverty plan has been proposed to the government every year for the past four years, with Mungall behind the latest three attempts. “This is something that perplexes me. In every other jurisdiction they have a plan, it works, and it’s also nonpartisan. All major parties in Canada have instituted plans,
and the only ones digging in their heels are the B.C. Liberals.” Mungall said the Liberals don’t believe in the efficacy of poverty reduction plans, but haven’t even bothered to debate it. “They honestly think these plans don’t work, and there’s no evidence to support that. You look at Newfoundland, you look at Manitoba, you look at Quebec—they’ve enacted plans, then they’ve met their goals or come close to meeting their goals. For some reason Liberals think the plans aren’t working.” Mungall believes a proper poverty reduction plan would incorporate feedback from people in poverty, an advisory council and multiple sectors of society including non-profits, business and adademia. “We need to get people with demonstrated expertise, then really invest in a plan.” Mungall said because the government is under-funding education, students in poverty don’t have the opportunities they should. “One hundred years ago
when public education was first being invested in in a meaningful way, that was why—it was well known throughout the world as a ticket out of poverty. It’s a core value that’s important for our society, and a great equalizer.” Mungall said she’s frustrated with the lack of debate in the legislature. “I think the history shows that with the Liberals they’ve only pulled forward one private member’s bill for debate in the entire time I've been there and that was to create Terry Fox day.” She said even if they go forward with the plan, she won’t get credit. “They often take our ideas and put them forward and adopt their own version. I would really like to debate the bill I put forward, because it’s a good bill. Will they do that? I don’t have the answer. But based on the Liberals’ track record of creating revenue streams out of people living in poverty, I’m not too hopeful. Certainly they could redeem themselves, but I don’t think they will.”

I keep a mental list of things I want to see happen here in the Creston Valley, so I was excited to learn that Ralph Casemore and Tanya Wall are going to develop the eyesore that once was Kootenay Hotel. When we came to Creston for our first Blossom Festival in 1979, this was a happening place, at least on that weekend. My new employer took me out after work to visit the local watering holes. The Creston (Sheen’s), Kootenay, Kokanee and Legion were packed to the rafters but we still managed to knock back a few Kokanees as we made the rounds. I can hardly picture what the Kootenay Hotel looked like then, other than to recall the restaurant at the front and pub to the rear (or did the pub extend all the way to the front on one side?). I didn’t spend enough time in it over the years, I suppose. And I was one of many who was less than enthused by the installation of a cartoon-like sasquatch in front of what became its namesake pub. Tacky, I thought, and certainly not to my taste. But when the business folded and the years took their toll on the building the days of the Bigfoot started to look pretty good in comparison. A couple of months ago, I toured the building with another friend who expressed interest in buying it. It wasn’t difficult to imagine what it could become, with the right vision and injection of sufficient cash. But not being a contractor, the work looked overwhelming. Just clearing it out —
and there’s plenty to clear, what with all the water damage the interior has sustained — would be a major undertaking, I thought. I suppose that friend didn’t pursue the purchase, but I will admit
We live in a society of instant gratification. Unlike our parents or grandparents — who saved up for larger purchases — we are often tempted to splurge on bigger-ticket items simply because we have a debit card in hand when we head out “window shopping”. And aside from overspending thanks to the advent of debit cards, consumers are also more likely to dip into overdraft, which ends up costing more thanks to fees and interest that banks charge whenever you spend more than you have in your account. Basically, a debit card works like a cheque. The only difference is that every time you use it, you’re immediately taking money out of your account. That’s why when you overdraw it’s like bouncing a cheque — only worse because, unlike cheques, you probably don’t keep a record of every debit card purchase you make. You may even make a bunch of small purchases before you realize you’ve spent more than you have. So before you pay for that coffee or lunch purchase with your debit card, make sure you have enough money in your account to cover it. Revert to using cash for daily expenses. Cash controls spending, plain and simple. Using cash to pay for everyday purchases, such as coffee, transit, lunch and magazines, alerts you to the idea that you’re actually spending real money. You just don’t get the same cautionary sense when you haul out plastic, be it a debit or credit card.
There’s a distinct cognitive event that happens when you handle money — it’s called awareness. Over the counter goes the $5 bill and back comes a loonie, a dime, two nickels and four pennies.
Lorne Eckersley to being thrilled when I confirmed that Ralph had purchased the property. I had heard rumours that he and Tanya were interested. Knowing that someone with their business background, and with Ralph’s decades of building experience, wanted to take on the challenge was heartening, indeed. I have no doubt that these folks are up to the task. Ralph is a straight-shooting realist, but also a fellow with a huge love of the Creston Valley. When he told me he would face the entire building with red brick with black and white granite highlights I was dumbstruck. I had simply made the assumption that patchwork and a paint job would be just fine, with the interior getting the major attention and investment. That he is willing to spend as much as three months working on the exterior, with all that added cost of materials, says much about the man. For Ralph and Tanya this is as
much a labour of love as it is a business investment. Their enthusiasm — of the down to earth, practical sort — is obvious. Like many, I am curious to see exactly what unfolds on the main floor. But I look forward to sitting inside, with its south- and eastfacing windows enlarged downward to floor level. On the upper level, the primarily south and east views will be quite wonderful, as I recall from my tour a couple of months ago. In my conversation with Ralph and Tanya they were forthright and enthusiastic, but far from naive. Getting a thorough environmental check gave them the peace of mind to pursue the sale. And let’s face it, Ralph’s sterling reputation as a builder and bricklayer should ease the minds of doubters who think the building should be removed entirely. He’s a practical realist and there isn’t a doubt in my mind that he can pull this off. Last week I joined the mayor and his team as they visited downtown businesses, and earlier had lunch with the other teams as they debriefed about their morning visits. Invariably they reported being pleasantly surprised at the positive reception they got. There is a sense of optimism in the business community that Creston is well positioned for the future, and the evidence is in the recent opening of new businesses and activity in some of the vacant storefronts. I think we are in for some exciting times. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.
The trouble with debit cards Mortgage Corner Dean Bala Did you just add up the change above to determine how much money you have left? Did you think about what that purchase could have been? You see, you are much more conscious of this imaginary purchase than if you had paid with plastic. Now, add in the awareness of the bills left in your wallet and you become attuned to your temporary wealth, or lack thereof. At the end of the day, what encourages or cautions many consumers about spending is knowing where you stand from a financial perspective. That’s why cash can help control spending. Using cash to pay for everyday purchases alerts you to the idea that you’re actually spending real money. By allotting yourself a weekly cash allowance for entertainment and everyday expenses — such as that daily morning coffee or weekly movie — you are building a budget around what you can spend on these
purchases. And once the money in your wallet has been spent, you have to ensure you fight the urge to withdraw more cash or resort back to using your debit card. Be realistic about what you typically spend on these items in a week. If you routinely eat out for lunch or stop at Tim Hortons for coffee, count that as well. If you think you’re spending too much on these items, you can then decide to find a less expensive alternative, such as brown-bagging your lunch or making your own coffee. Let’s say, for instance, that you start the week off with $50 in your wallet and you began to spend it on your purchases. You will see $50 turn into $40, $40 turn into $25, $25 turn into $15 and so on. Every time you look into your wallet, you will see what’s left over from your original $50 and be aware of how quickly your money is being spent. This alone can make you think twice before making a purchase. So why is a mortgage broker/ Realtor writing about this? Because budgeting is critical in preparing yourself for home ownership. It is an essential step in saving up your down payment, as well as being able to cover the expenses associated with home ownership. By getting into a healthy budgeting mindset you can be more prepared when it comes time to purchase a home. Tech keeps rec centre organized
The British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) is the professional organization dedicated to enhancing quality of life in our province that the Regional District of Central Kootenay belongs to, as do most leisure
From the Centre Neil Ostafichuk services providers in B.C. The BCRPA is a not-for-profit organization and its extensive network of members in the parks, recreation, physical activity and culture sector support the development of healthy individuals and communities, and sustainable environments and economies. Since 1958, the BCRPA has provided leadership, training and support, fostering the principles of accessibility and inclusiveness, to help its members meet provincial and local health and physical activity priorities. That’s kind of a dry read, but it does sum up the overall philosophy. One project currently underway within the organization relates to you and what happens when you walk to
the front desk or register online. At present, we use a software program called Class, which is a pretty powerful tool also used across North America and in some pretty big centres. This is where we enter your information when you come to register for a course, rent a room for a wedding or just come in and pay admission to go for a swim. Class has been around for maybe 20 years or so and was originally developed in Vancouver and expanded from there, both in distribution and functionality. It allows us to keep track of clients, create reports on visits and usage to develop better programming, assign room or facility rentals and accompanying accounting requirements, and book appropriate time for maintenance. The program does way more than can be summed up in a sentence or two but needless to say with the traffic we see through here, it would be incredibly challenging to keep track of everything on paper as we did in the past. So the bad news is that the company is dropping support for Class in 2017 — sort of like Microsoft dropped support for XP (and everything else before it). So BCRPA began pulling people together, first as a forum last year and now to the point where we are part of a group of about 19 municipalities throughout B.C. forming the Parks and Recreation Management Software Joint
Municipal Collaboration. This group is currently developing a request for proposal for new software, which, at the end of the day, will result in seeing what is out there to make the transition to. The scope of the project is actually huge and involves input right from the level of programmers and maintenance requirements right through to finance and administration. Groups have split out to address needs and wants in structured programming, unstructured recreation, point of sale, financial processes, space management, customer relations and technical requirements. One of the benefits through collaboration is access to business analysts, which are a function of some of the larger municipalities on the Lower Mainland. So, long story short, in a couple years we will probably see a better and more current software package tailored to leisure services and municipality’s specific needs. As with all technology, it has changed so radically over a short period of time that sometimes it is better to start from scratch than keep adding to an older platform. For the patron, you may not notice anything too different other than ease of use and connectivity but there will be some big changes under the surface. Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.
the Apple company, not the fruit. It’s unbelievable, right? How does a technology company that’s been around for 40 years surpass a fruit that’s been around for thousands of years? It’s astounding, and amazing how powerful this company has become in a matter of years. Founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne, the company grew quickly. With the new innovative ideas and the initiative to stretch forward, it swiftly grew to what it is today, and has enraptured the world. The Apple I was the first creation made by Steve J. and Steve W., which grew into the Apple II, then the Apple III, and so on. Now, it’s turned into new creations such as the Apple Watch which will be released this year. Imagine having a watch on your wrist, close to the same capabilities as a smartphone! If you were also to create an app, you wouldn’t get very far if you didn’t design an edition for Apple products. I wouldn’t bat an eyelash if I was told that over half of our local high school had Apple products, as it is the largest tech company in the world. I would assume that it is, because it is always coming out with something new. Every year, this corporation has something new to release, and everybody always wants to have the newest gadget and the most glamourous device. It also pairs with the fact of how easy to use the iOS operating system is. Every iPhone and iPad is designed practically the same, so it’s no mystery how to use it. It’s perfect for the people who are into good organization, and not too interested in customizing their own device to their own needs. A simple invention indeed! Now Android, on the other hand, is a completely different story. This operating is fairly new, as it was born in 2003, which I would believe would make it more open to new ideas and innovation and customization, rather
than the iOS system. Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears and Chris White were the four technological engineers that created Android Inc. In 2005, it became property of Google, which has advanced the operating system of these devices so high, it has been known to even surpass our friend, the Apple product. Could this be why Android users despise Apple? Is it because of the work put into to create a highly advanced software? Could it be because of the new updates so often? The customizable abilities? Or of the cool names of their updates? They have had the Cupcake, Eclair, Froyo, Honeycomb and Kit Kat updates, and many more. Who wouldn’t love an operating system with delicious names like that? The Android OS is used within many different smartphones, starting with the HTC Dream and escalating to the Samsung Galaxy S6, which has a very touch sensitive screen and can take amazing photos, along with many many more capabilities. You make your phone what you want it to be with the many customizable features, such as how you want to receive your notifications, choosing your browsers you want to use, using your phone as your wallet and the amount of accessibility options. This operating system is great for those who love tech and fun, all rolled up in one package. But if you choose an Android product, don’t down on the Apple. So you’ve read the brief explanation, you’ve thought it over in your head and maybe you already knew what you liked from the start. But whatever the fact may be, these two are probably the main software companies you would like to choose from. Of course there are your other low-key ones, such as Windows, Blackberry or Linux, but none of them are as highly ranked as these two.
The ultimate disagreement
Apple, Android, iPhone, Samsung — too many disagreements and arguments on which is better. It’s the technology age, for sure. Apple, or iOS, is pretty cool. So many different technologies with it: computers, phones,
The Teen Take Elizabeth Nygren tablets, watches. It’s crazy. And the advancements are incredible. Apple has introduced iCloud and FaceTime and what seems like the thinnest computer ever, the Macbook Air — all things that seemed so utterly impossible 20 years ago, and now it’s one of the easiest softwares to use. Probably everyone in the world knows what an Apple product is! And Android, a major operating system, used for phones, tablets and computers and run by Google! Google is one of the most popular technological services out there that is provided to us. Android can be used for many different companies as a software, unlike iOS. It is the software for HTC, OnePlus, Samsung and more. It is a very customisable software and not totally nailed down to where you can’t change anything at all. Totally perfect for the computer savvy. And now technology is something the world can’t live without. We send emails to our family members that arrive in the blink of an eye, have live video chats with friends from across the world and watch videos of cats flying through space. It’s absolutely magnificent. But I guess the question really is: Which do you think is best? When you search “apple” on Google, the first thing that comes up is

Hard work led to previous council successes

TOWN OF CRESTON REVITALIZATION TAX EXEMPTION BYLAW NO. 1821 To encourage the economic revitalization and economic growth of the Town of Creston, which includes investment and employment opportunities, Council intends to establish a Revitalization Tax Exemption Program, as per Section 226 of the Community Charter. The Program is for the development of new commercial businesses or the redevelopment of existing commercial businesses. Upon adoption of Bylaw No. 1821, the Town will accept applications for a Revitalization Tax Exemption only in the years 2015, 2016 and 2017, and no applications will be accepted after August 31, 2017. The reasons for creating the Revitalization Tax Exemption Program are as follows: a. Council recognizes that a critical component of the continued economic revitalization and growth of the Town is to build upon the success of its prior initiatives by encouraging the development of new commercial businesses, or the redevelopment of existing commercial businesses in the Town’s zones that permit commercial uses, which will stimulate investment in the Town and provide new employment opportunities and commercial services for its existing and future residents, thereby attracting further economic growth and increasing the Town’s tax base; b. the Town of Creston’s Official Community Plan identifies the commercial objective of creating a strong and vibrant commercial economy in the Town of Creston; and, c. the Town of Creston’s 2015 Corporate Strategic Plan identifies economic development as a corporate priority. The objectives of the Revitalization Tax Exemption Program are to: a. encourage new commercial businesses in new and renovated buildings in the Town’s zones that permit commercial uses and thereby establish the commercial services and the investment and employment opportunities that will attract additional investment and economic growth to the Town of Creston; and b. reinforce the municipality’s “open for business” approach and attract redevelopment and new development of commercial businesses within the municipality. Eligible improvements means i. an existing building, used only for an eligible use, on appropriately zoned land and having a renovation project value of $50,000.00 or greater, as determined by the Town’s Chief Building Official, and for which a valid Building Permit has been issued by the Town; or ii. a new building used only for an eligible use, that is constructed on appropriately zoned land and having a construction project value of $150,000.00 or greater, as determined by the Town’s Chief Building Official, and for which a valid Building Permit has been issued by the Town. Council will be considering first, second and third readings to Revitalization Tax Exemption Bylaw No. 1821 at the June 10, 2015 Regular Council Meeting, and adoption at the June 23, 2015 Regular Council Meeting. Further information is available upon request at Town Hall, 238 – 10th Avenue North, Creston, 250-428-2214, Ext. 226. Bev Caldwell Executive Assistant

Council Comment
But most of all I thank all former councillors and mayors for their support as we found our way out of the maze that is the running of our town. When you see a councillor or mayor shopping, please stop and thank them for the commitment of four years of their family life to work for the taxpayers of Creston. Police officers, firefighters and our town crew and management deserve kudos for all they do. If you have any questions or issues, never be nervous to call me. I promise to help in any way I can. But why do these Android fanboys seemingly hate these iOS Users? Well, as I’ve read, it all comes down to personal preference. But supposedly Android users dislike iOS users because of the lack of apps provided to Apple products, as you need to pay to create an Apple app and they must be child friendly. It’s not as customizable as the Android software, meaning you must “jailbreak” your phone — change it to run software and have capabilities that usually would not be allowed — in order to customize it. And, finally, Apple users are saying that the new updates have “groundbreaking capabilities”, when Android has actually had these updates already and they are actually becoming bored with them. But I personally think the amount of hate being thrown toward Apple is too much, as they are both really awesome softwares. Get over yourself! Apple and Android are both great and the “haterz” just need to accept it. But I guess the real question is, which do you think is the best? Apple, Android, iPhone, Samsung — the ultimate disagreement. Elizabeth Nygren is in Grade 11 at Prince Charles Secondary School. The Teen Take is a column co-ordinated by the Teen Action Committee.

SPORTS of Burnaby 27-25, 25-9 and Airdrie/ Calgary 26-24, 25-15 to round out the opening day. High drama was also at play as E.K. fell behind Burnaby 24-16 in Set 1 before staging an improbable rally, and the opening set of the Airdrie/Calgary match was tied seven different times before the Avalanche prevailed. The momentum carried over into the second day of action when the Avalanche posted 2-0 victories over Brandon (25-20, 25-16), FOG of Edmonton (25-17, 25-22) and Kelowna Kahuna (2517, 25-14). In addition to the Creston trio, the 2015 Avalanche roster was rounded out by three players from Cranbrook and three from Fernie, although it was far from full strength at the end. East Kootenay was initially seeded in Division 1 at the nationals, based on its 10th-place finish in the Alberta provincials, but was moved to Division 2 when it became apparent many of its players would not be available for the Volleyball Canada event. In fact, the Avalanche played the first two days at nationals with the minimum six players — Mike

The Creston-based E.K. Avalanche received their national championship gold medals in a ceremony inside Calgary’s Olympic Oval. Pictured (from left) are: coach Mike Nelson of Creston, Ben Gilmet of Fernie, Dylan Bohmer of Cranbrook, Mark Armstrong of Creston, Parker Thomson of Cranbrook, Marcus Bell of Creston, Quinn Gris of Cranbrook and Davis Nelson of Creston.
Nelson sitting alone on the bench with no substitutions at his disposal in the event of an injury or even to give a player an occasional rest. The team enjoyed the luxury of one extra player on the final day. Assistant coach Niall Cobbe of Creston was also unable to make it to Calgary. The 2015 nationals marked the first time Volleyball Canada staged boys’ and girls’ championships in all age groups in the same place at the same time, setting up the largest festival of volleyball in Canadian history and possibly the country’s biggest single-sport event ever. A total of 787 teams from coast to coast competed in two separate intakes from May 14-19, with more than 10,000 athletes, 300 referees and 15,000 spectators in attendance. A pre-tournament highlight for many players, including the Avalanche, was attending a World Volleyball League match at the Stampede Corral between the national teams of Cuba and Canada, the latter featuring starter Gord Perrin of Creston, a former player of Mike Nelson’s. Canada won the match 3-0.

An exceptional eight-match winning streak culminated in a national championship for the East Kootenay Avalanche under-15 boys’ volleyball team. Playing May 17-19 at the University of Calgary, the Creston-based East Kootenay Volleyball Club squad lost its opening match two sets to one and then never looked back, winning 16 of its final 18 sets — including 11 in a row during one extraordinary stretch — to run the table in Division 2 at the Volleyball Canada nationals. The gold-medal victory capped an outstanding season for the team, coached by Mike Nelson of Creston and featuring Prince Charles Secondary School students Mark Armstrong, Marcus Bell and Davis Nelson. Competing almost exclusively against big-city competition, the Avalanche proved their worth in bringing home the first national crown in Mike Nelson’s lengthy and illustrious coaching career. “I’m so proud of the whole team,” said Carrie Armstrong of Creston, the team manager. “They worked hard all year and overcame adversity many times, especially during games at the nationals.” The championship match – a 28-26, 24-26, 15-7 triumph over 204 Cardinal of Winnipeg – was just one case in point. A see-saw first set saw East Kootenay fall behind 5-2 before a 9-2 run of its own put the Avalanche in front 11-7. After trailing 15-12 and 21-19, the Avalanche battled their Manitoba foes evenly down the stretch as the score was tied 21-21 and at every point thereafter until the locals pushed through with two consecutive points at 26-all to take a 1-0 lead in the best-ofthree match. When E.K. jumped out to 9-3 and 14-7 advantages in the second set, it appeared victory was imminent but Cardinal would not quit, closing to within 20-15. Still, clinging to a 23-21 edge, the Avalanche were just two points away from the title before dropping the set 26-24. With momentum swinging the other way and demoralization a distinct possibility, not to mention fatigue (having played three tense matches per day for three days), the Avalanche found the resolve not only to prevail in the decisive set but do so convincingly. They took
leads of 8-1 and 10-2 en route to a third-set victory that put them on the podium for a medal ceremony inside the massive Olympic Oval, site of speed skating events during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games but home to 20 volleyball courts during the six-day nationals. That match almost seemed tame in comparison to the drama that unfolded in the semifinals against the WinMan club, also of Winnipeg. E.K. trailed by as many as 11 in the first set and faced a 24-16 deficit when the Avalanche stared down eight straight set points without blinking and rattled off an unthinkable 10 consecutive points behind the serving of Fernie’s Ben Gilmet on their way to a 26-24, 25-15 victory that sent them into the gold-medal match. The day began with the first of three suddendeath playoffs in a seven-hour span, a three-setter over the St. Albert Sturgeons from suburban Edmonton, 25-20, 20-25, 15-5. Ironically, the Avalanche’s final opponent was also its first as 204 Cardinal posted a three-set CRESTON victory in the opening round-robin match for both teams on Day 1, 29-27, 23-25, 15-7. E.K. held leads of 21-19 and 22-18 in the first and second HOSPITAL sets, respectively, before settling for a split, then trailed from the outset in the tiebreaker. The locals would not lose a set again over the next two days,CRESTON however, sweeping the Apex club

EAST KOOTENAY FOUNDATION FOR HEALTH
Since 2006 the Creston Valley Shrine Club No. 35 has quietly been making annual donations to the pediatric unit at the Creston Valley Hospital (CVH). Recently, the Shriners once again presented a donation of $636 for the kids. What the
Shriners didn’t realize is that with this generous gift the club has now surpassed over $10,000 in giving to the hospital. “The pediatric team is genuinely touched by the continued support of the Shriners and we are pleased to work with EKFH to see these gifts stewarded for Creston,” said new site manager Carolyn Hawton.
The East Kootenay Foundation for Health is a non-profit society and public charitable foundation. The foundation stewards over 30 funds for hospitals and health care facilities throughout the East Kootenay. To learn more about EKFH and its mission, visit www.ekfh.ca or find it on Facebook.

Moving Along Together Week 6
Craft beer lovers get ready, the East Kootenay Beer Festival is coming and it will be bigger than ever. The festival, in its fourth year, is on June 20 from 4-8 p.m. at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort Ski Area. This year, event organizers have gone all out, planning to give guests an unforgettable weekend in the beautiful Columbia Valley. “We will have over 70 beers for guests to sample and several new breweries presenting unique and seasonal brews, including Hoyne Brewing and Moon Under Water,” Charlotte Moos, Fairmont's special events co-ordinator, said. “To top it off, we also have our food truck on site serving up traditional beer lover’s eats like bratwursts and authentic German pretzels to keep people well fed.” For the first time, Fairmont Hot Springs Resort's annual long drive competition will run in tandem with the festival. Both young and old will tee up three golf balls and attempt to hit them as far as possible down the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort Airport's runway. The contest is on June 19 from 4-7 p.m. and costs $15 for adults and $10 for children, with all proceeds going to the Columbia Valley Golf Trail Junior Tour, which helps to help develop young golfers. Along with the chance of winning some cool prizes, all participants will receive a two-for-one coupon for the barbe-
cue party at Mountainside Clubhouse, including live music by Ted Alexander from 7-11 p.m. “We decided the Long Drive Contest would be a great way to kick off the whole weekend,” Moos said. Another new addition to the festival is this year’s after party, held at the ski chalet. Local band Valley Forged will have the crowd rocking out for the remainder of the night. All festival guests are invited to attend the party, enjoy some of their favourite beers, and take in the mountain views. As well as individual tickets for $49, the festival is offering two different packages for guests looking to stay for the weekend. The lodge package includes two nights of accommodation, two tickets to the festival and unlimited access to Canada's largest natural mineral hot springs. The camping package includes two tickets to the festival and a two night stay at Spruce Grove RV Park and Campground. Moos said the accommodation packages and the additional events held over the weekend will encourage guests to spend more time in the valley. “It encourages people to come here not only for the festival but for the whole weekend,” she said. “We want the festival to be a special part of their summer vacation plans.” To purchase tickets or for more information, call 1-800-663-4979 or visit www.fairmonthotsprings. com/4th-annual-beerfest.
More Memory Workouts
Our weekly sessions at TAPS for this program are attended by people affected by memory changes and their family caregivers. We use the “By Us for Us” Guides published through the University of Waterloo by the Murray Alzheimer Research and Education Program as points of discussion chosen by the participants. We’re offering a few ideas and resources in these columns for your information, for family, friends and loved ones. Information will be posted on the Valley Community Services website. This is meant to complement any information available through other sources and stimulate discussion. In last week’s column we talked about the benefits of and tips for enhancing memory. This week, we’re listing options for activities that you can have fun with and are considered good for “training your brain”. Studies repeatedly demonstrate that staying active in diverse ways can affect brain health positively and therefore our thinking, memory and well-being. So, have you had your breakfast? Got your running shoes and exercise gear on? Well, that MAY be on your agenda, because physical exercise is a recognized way for keeping our brains alert. However, here are other more sedentary ideas shared in the Memory Workout booklet, one of the By Us For Us Guides referred to above. Remember to do activities that you like, and yet also give yourself a push sometimes to try new or challenging activities. Most of you know about and may already be doing these and other activities. Access to them is relatively easy these days. All the suggestions below can be found from a variety of shops at the library, or. on-line for computer users. Your local social club may be where

you go to “play” with others. Look around the house or basement as you may discover forgotten puzzles, games and books. Check at garage sales, thrift stores, or stores that sell games, find a friend to do things with or make it part of your family activities. • Word and Number Games: Boggle, crosswords, word searches, Sudoku: Rather than long sessions, give yourself say 20 mins to see how many you can get. • Matching game: Memory or Concentration or use playing cards to devise a game. • Solitaire; use cards or play it on the computer. • Brain Teasers: Remember the Rubik’s Cube? Take some time and see if you can get even one row or a side. Other brain teasers include wooden, peg or wire games. • Jigsaw Puzzles: try puzzles with larger then smaller pieces to increase the difficulty. • Video and computer games: any game that requires concentration, memory and problem-solving is good. Classics such as Tetris are popular for this. • Musical Instruments: One of the most beneficial activities, play or try your hand at something, even if you’re a one-fingered wonder. • Darts and Billiards: fun and good for all of the above benefits. • Basic Math: Number games such as Yahtzee or dominoes by yourself. • Memorizing: Make a list of 10 items and see how many you can recall. Study objects in a room: walk out and list how many things you can remember. What else could you do? • Help Remembering: Break lists into smaller sections and sing them in ¾ time. Say things out loud. Repeat them several times. Associate an object with a scent, past experience or emotion. Rebus puzzles are essentially little pictures, often made with letters and words, which cryptically represent a word, phrase, or saying. Here are two for you to try: 1. momanon 2. DEAL There are many books and online examples of these. Another online resource: www.alzheimer.ca for BrainBooster activities: for fitness, puzzles and recipes. Creston artists on display at Fernie Arts Station
Discovery Real Estate
ARTS STATION
The Arts Station in Fernie is a vibrant, happening venue, and with the recent opening of the “On the Wall - Off the Wall” show featuring Eileen Gidman, Laura Leeder and Win Dinn it’s even more so. These three Creston valley artists are showing at Fernie’s Arts Station through June 22, and it’s a show you’ll want to see. An eclectic mixture of mediums, it features colourful dyes-on-textile paintings by Gidman, dreamily timeless watercolours by Leeder and richly textural mixed media by Dinn. Leeder’s vintage-style teacup paintings, long a favourite of her followers, are now being joined by works in a style that is reminiscent of stained glass that might have been created by members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. These paintings incorporate ink and occasionally acrylic for a luminous portrayal of flora and fauna. A favourite by opening attendees was Pearl Blossoms, a jewel-toned blue and green fantasia of a floral. Gidman’s work, of particular interest to many members of the quilting community in attendance, is fascinating for the unique painting with dyes on fabric. Her saturated colours bring life to her nature-based works, and the overstitching on her art cards highlights these beautiful vignettes. Watch for her sunflowers on a blue background when you view the show — it was a huge hit at the opening. The textural work of Dinn begs handling, and that’s encouraged. Layer upon layer of mediums, stamps, stencils, papers and found objects keep the eye wandering through a painting or over a three-dimensional surface. Her diverse use of found objects include buttons, coins, semiprecious stones, bottle caps, metal embellishments, chains and costume jewelry. The floral landscape, Garden Patterns, had attendees bemused with the extensive shapes and styles of handcrafted flowers, all made from her handpainted papers. Visitors will be delighted to find a range of note cards by both Leeder and Gidman, prints by Leeder, and smaller paintings and dimensional works by Dinn, as well as the larger pieces that are the more usual fare. There’s something here for everyone, and it’s all a feast for the eyes. Looking for inspiration, colour, texture, or just plain fun? This show is the place to find them all. Oh, and keep your eyes peeled on the Fernie Arts Station Facebook page — there’s a rumour afloat that both Gidman and Dinn will be presenting workshops there in the next while. For more information on the artists, visit www. lauraleeder.blogspot.ca, eileengidman.blogspot.ca or windinnart.blogspot.ca.
