We’re bringing a show from not just another time, but a whole other world,” Neil E. Dee told the Advertiser. “I like to call it unusual entertainment.” Dee said he’s been experimenting with his body since a young age, trying to push it to its limits, and he’s now been a circus performer most of his adult life. During his routines, Dee swallow swords, lays on a bed of nails and hammers a four-inch spike into his face. Afterwards, he invites a volunteer to come on stage to help him remove it from his sinus cavity. “This is a highly interactive show,” he said. Donor wall unveiled during celebration SHERI REGNIER West Kootenay Advertiser
The Critical Care Campaign came to an official close Thursday afternoon after the curtain dropped, revealing a memorable and lasting donor tree of recognition. The wall, located outside of the regional hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), shows the culmination of generosity of individuals and organizations throughout West Kootenay and Kootenay Boundary communities. The drive to raise funds for new equipment in the ICU, Emergency department (ER) and for the High Acuity Response Team (HART),wound up five months ahead of schedule and $178,000 over its half million dollar target. The Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) Health Foundation’s campaign launched in July 2013 with a goal to deliver high quality sustainable care to critically ill patients, thereby reducing the need for transport to facilities outside the region. The $500,000 drive was expected to span two years but following a very successful KBRH Pledge Day in December, the campaign exceeded its goal within 19 months.
“Our communities should all be very proud,” said Lisa Pasin, director of development for the health foundation, adding, “over the 26 years of the KBRH Health Foundation’s operations, we have raised over $13.3 million to improve healthcare in the Kootenay Boundary.” A unique aspect to this campaign was the region’s sickest patients benefitted as donor dollars accumulated. Generally, the area’s critically ill are transported to the hospital via HART, and pass through the ER before high level care in the intensive care ward. New equipment was ordered as the CCC progressed, meaning pain and stress of certain procedures was lessened for many patients long before the campaign goal was reached. Dr. Scot Mountain has been an ambassador for the campaign since its inception and spoke of its value during the CCC public celebration in the KBRH lobby. “The challenge and privilege for those of us working in ICU, is that we look after the sickest patients in the Kootenay Boundary health region,” began Mountain, KBRH’s ICU medical director.

Not hearing clearly when many people are talking? Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, System Audéo V has been designed specifically to understand in group situations.
The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in company, or in the restaurant. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that are decisive when it comes to hearing things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory center of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.
Hearing sensation! Swiss researchers: Audéo V is superior for conversation.
Without Audéo V
With Audéo V
The New Audeo V hearing aids provide considerable reduction in noise allowing you to focus on speech.
New hearing chip developed Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing aid chip that is designed to improve speech comprehension in noise, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to
is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation. Interested people can register for a no-obligation demonstration of the Audéo V by calling 888.408.7377

Getting the Selkirk College Experience High school students from across the West Kootenay-Boundary received a taste for post-secondary life last week at the annual Experience Selkirk Day. More than 400 students descended on Selkirk College’s Castlegar Campus, Tenth Street Campus and Kootenay Studio Arts Campus to take in morning workshops and afternoon games. It was an opportunity for those considering a post-secondary pathway at Selkirk College to get a closer look. “We spend time visiting high schools and talking with students throughout the year,” says Selkirk College Recruitment Specialist Aimie Chernoff. “But getting them to come onto campus where they can interact with instructors, staff and current students makes it much more real. We want students of our region to know that this is their community college, that it’s a welcoming place to be and a great place to learn.” Students came from high schools all across the region for the Thursday event, including JL Crowe (Trail), Stanley Humphries (Castlegar), LV Rogers (Nelson), Grand Forks Secondary, Boundary Central Secondary (Midway), Mount Sentinel, JV Humphries (Kaslo), Nakusp, New Denver (Lucerne), Seven Summits (Rossland), KCLC (Kootenay Columbia Learning Centre), Salmo Secondary, Prince Charles Secondary (Creston) and Self Design High (Nelson). The morning workshops had students taking part in classes like The Chemistry of Candy Making, Clay Creations, Boarding
Pass – Language Arts, Explore the World of Tourism, Graphics In Motion, Math Circle and Sinixt: Real-Live Extinct Indigenous People – Anthropology. “Our instructors did an excellent job of providing a spark to these enthusiastic students,” says Chernoff. “Obviously it’s scratching the surface of all the amazing educational opportunities at Selkirk College, but it’s a nice introduction.” The afternoon consisted of a barbecue lunch and then schools competed against each other in fun games on what turned out to be glorious West Kootenay day. Though introducing students to elements of Selkirk College’s student life was the goal, the winning teams did leave with cheques for their schools which will be used for any student life activities of their choice. The winners of the team competition in Castlegar were Grand Forks Secondary and Boundary Central Secondary. In Nelson, the winning school was JL Crowe. “The spirit and participation in the games was better than ever this year,” says Chernoff. “The students had a great time and we hope they left with a little more understanding about what takes place at Selkirk College.” Throughout the year Selkirk College puts on several recruitment events including Made For Trades, the Career & Education Fair, Student for A Day, Campus Tours and an annual Open House. Critical Care Campaign CLOSING SALE comes to an official close FINAL June 12-20th •9-5pm 6160 Hwy 3W Salmo 250-357-2604
The $500,000 drive was expected to span two years continued from page A4
“It’s an honour to be able to do that and often a difficult thing to do.” He said statistics shows 80 per cent of people during their lifetime will come in contact with critical care either through a loved one or by themselves needing the service. “So the donations you’ve made to help us provide the care of people in our ICU are not just donations to patients, they are donations to all of us. “They are donations to the community, donations to help our loved ones and our family members as well as potentially ourselves down the line.” The critical care group is built around three areas, Mountain continued. Before patients are admitted to ICU from outlying areas including Nelson, Castlegar and Grand Forks, they are transported by ambulance to the hospital’s emergency ward under the specialized care of HART. Once in the ER, the patient is stabilized before transfer to an ICU bed. “So a patient today, with the funds that have been raised, at each of those stages of his/her care would benefit from what we’ve managed to purchase.” CCC equipment upgrades totalling $280,000 are currently on site. Those include a bedside ultrasound called a Sonosite, two ECG defibrillator monitors, a trauma stretcher, infusion pumps, a glidescope, a high-end mechanical ventilator, an IV warming pod, and telemetry monitoring packs.
A further $203,000 of new equipment is on order, including a portable cardiac monitor, a high end portable ventilator and specialty beds. “The new state-of-the-art ventilator allows us to provide breathing support that is the same you would get anywhere in the province,” he said, also mentioning the Sonosite and new infusion systems. “Special medications need to be given in very exact doses, and we have pumps that allow us to program those doses and make sure people are getting the medications the way they need it,” Mountain added. “All those things are part of a trip through the ICU when everything works well. We have an amazing staff that is now supported by the equipment we need.” The Critical Care team is working systematically to ensure the highest priority equipment is ordered across all three Critical Care departments, explained Lisa Pasin, the foundation’s director of development. “And with that, more patients will be able to remain closer to home for the duration of their treatment and recovery,” she said. The KBRH Health Foundation recently launched its Urology Campaign as the facility readies for the arrival of a new urologist, Dr. Micheal Robinson in July. The foundation is committed to raising $400,000 for new equipment to support his arrival. Expanding surgical services at KBRH through investment in the Urology Campaign, will benefit men and women across the Kootenay Boundary who require urologic assessment and care.

Ninety-eighth in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names We’ve seen over the last few weeks that while some people believed Kaslo honoured a placer miner named John Kasleau, the prevailing theory has always been that the name was derived from a First Nations word — although whether it was Ktunaxa or Sinixt isn’t well established. “Kaslo and Slocan are Indian names and are bestowed in honor of ancient families of the Kootenays. They are proper names and have no interpretation,” claimed the Kaslo Claim of May 12, 1893. In a letter to the chief geographer at Ottawa, published in The Kootenaian on Aug. 31, 1905, J.W. Cockle wrote: “The name Kaslo according to the evidence of an old Kootenay Indian named Sebastian who claims that his grandfather told him the names of stopping camps on Kootenay Lake is derived from the word Cassoloe, a blackberry. The affix –a to this denotes a place where blackberries grow, this when modified by use results in the word Ah-Kas-loe by which name the place was known to the Indians — Kaslo, the place where blackberries grow.” Sarah Helena Nash Keen, in a 1925 letter to the Dept. of Mines said she was surprised to hear the John Kasleau explanation, first proposed by David Kane in 1905, “as I was under the impression the name Kaslo was Indian and meant ‘plenty berries’ or ‘many berries.’” According to Dorothy Kennedy and Randy Bouchard in First Nations Ethnography & Ethnohistory in BC’s Lower Kootenay/ Columbia Hydropower Region: “It should be noted that the plant species referred to was likely not blackberry but black hawthorn (Crataegus douglasii), the Kutenai term for which is transcribed as kala in a Kutenai ethnobotanical study — presumably Cassoloe was Mr. Cockle’s attempted transcription of kala. The fact that the name for Kaslo is written as qaslu on a [1995] map of Kutenai territory and place names suggests that this place

state of emergency: Kane’s Landing was the name of a whole foods store in Kaslo in the 1970s as well as an antique store in the 2000s, but may not have been the original name of the community, despite a commonly accepted belief. Photo by Greg Nesteroff name is indeed derived from the word kala (‘black hawthorn’).” According to the Ktunaxa Language Program, the traditional name for the site is ?aqastu pronounced a-kas-thoo. However, James Teit recorded an Okanagan-Colville name for a place on Trout Lake, kali’so, which fellow anthropologist Verne Ray elicited as sia’uks qali’su. Could this be the origin of Kaslo? Journalist Lance Whittaker suggested as much in the Nelson Daily News of April 16, 1947. Kennedy and Bouchard don’t say if they considered the possibility, but wrote: “The portion of Ray’s transcription that is written as sia’uks is recognizable to us as the prefix which we transcribe as i7a7ks — and which means ‘place of ’ in the Okanagan-Colville language. We do not know what Okanagan-Colville term Teit and Ray were transcribing, however, even though Ray provided the translation ‘where the water flows outward.’”
,
While Teit only said kali’so was an old village on Trout Lake, Ray’s translation and identification of its location indicates it was what we now call Gerrard. Another puzzling thing: in a 1933 Spokane radio broadcast, David Kane claimed Kaslo was originally called Kane’s Landing after himself and brother George, and it has been commonly accepted since. While it’s entirely plausible, the only contemporary reference to Kane’s Landing indicates otherwise. According to the Nakusp Ledge of Aug. 9, 1894: “There is no truth in the rumor that Kaslo would have its name changed to Kane’s Landing.” There was no explanation of what precipitated that remark. Whatever the circumstances, might Kane have misremembered them more than 40 years later? Something similar happened with Pilot Bay, but that story will wait until later in this series.

Design unveiled for new Kootenay Lake temple Not quite a year after fire destroyed a Kootenay Lake landmark, Yasodhara Ashram has released a conceptual design for its new Temple of Light. The temple, designed by Patkau Architects, incorporates symbolic and historical elements. “The new design moves beyond a geometrical form,” said Swami Lalitanada in an update to the community. “The building is an organic collection of windows and panels that come together to create a luminous inner
space. Patkau’s intent was always to use light as a primary building material.” The ashram, a yoga retreat and study centre, has launched a website dedicated to the project at temple. yasodhara.org. The ashram was founded on Walkers Landing Road in Kootenay Bay in 1963. The temple’s foundation was laid two years later, but it took until the late 1980s for work to begin in earnest. It was completed in 1992 and burned down last June.
Conceptual designs for the new temple at Yasodhara Ashram on Kootenay Lake’s East Shore show a “luminous inner space.”

Salvation Army hosts barbecue and bake sale Nelson’s Salvation Army hosted a hot dog barbecue, bake sale and offered tours of their facility last week in an efforts to share its services. Social service worker students Alita Tondu and Monica Fernandes are currently finishing their practicum at the Salvation Army. “As part of our practicum we organized this event to promote community awareness on the struggles of poor and marginalized peoples of Nelson,” said Fernandes. Tables in front of the thrift store had information boards demonstrating the variety of services supplied by the Salvation Army, as well as a baked goods for sale and ballon creations by Bubbles the Clown.

Educators from around the region are being invited to come together at the Selkirk College Mir Centre for Peace in mid-June to better develop tools that will assist students in finding ways to focus their minds and find meaning in what they are learning. The Contemplative Pedagogy Retreat takes place in Castlegar on June 12 and 13. Hosted by Selkirk College’s Contemplative Practice Group and the Teaching & Learning Institute, the two-day retreat is intended for educators of all kinds to examine contemplative practices that foster resilience, curiosity and thoughtfulness in their students. The two days will be about the different ways to approach the subject and the different ways individuals— both student and instructor—respond to the practices. “The practices we use in contemplative pedagogy are by no means new, but there has been a renewed concern in recent years as a reaction to an increase in the mind’s distraction,” says Almeda Glenn Miller, Selkirk College University Arts & Science Creative Writing and Literature

for educators to expand their knowledge. Dr. Daniel Barbezat—Professor of Economics at Amherst College and Executive Director of the Centre for Contemplative Mind in Society—is returning to the West Kootenay to help participants consider how contemplative inquiry informs the practice of educators. “We hope to bring educators of all kinds together to explore what it means to incorporate contemplative practices into our pedagogy,” says Miller. “Many educators are dealing with some difficult questions about how to deliver a meaningful education to our students. Introducing contemplative inquiry into my curriculum has offered both my students and myself a meaningful way to peel back the many layers of creative and critical thinking in our writing.” The rigours and pressures of learning at a higher level can take a toll on students, but contemplative practice in the classroom can lessen the stress and produce better overall results.

2015
Summer is a time to bid adieu to the bulky, layered looks that dominate winter and even parts of spring. Each season the runways help dictate which fashions will dominate stores across the country, and the following are some beauty and fashion trends to expect this summer.
Splashes of orange
Orange is a vibrant hue poised to take the season by storm. Evoking feelings of warmth and sunshine, orange is an unexpected and bold color choice. Daring women can don head-to-toe orange and really make a splash. However, there are some more subtle ways to don orange this season, including adding a pop of this vibrant color to shoes or belts. If the runways were any indication, orange makeup also figures to be popular this summer. An orange lip and a peachy eye flatter many skin types. Such coral colors are reminiscent of tropical, coral backdrops, making them perfect for summers by the shore.
Black-and-white domination
Pairing crisp black and white will forever be a fashion staple. This combination continues to be a strong contender for spring/summer 2014 fashion. Avoid looking like the wait staff at a local restaurant by matching black with white in unique ways. Another way to make black and white more unique is to play with texture. A black top over a willowy white skirt is ever-popular. Mix black leather with white lace, and vice versa, for a style that is daring but sweet at the same time. Black-and-white stripes remain popular, and color-blocking can be used to hide figure flaws and draw attention to more flattering areas of the
body. Adding pops of pastel with black and white is another popular trend for the season, particularly tints of blush and mint.
Ethereal faces
Few people want to feel burdened by their makeup regimen on warm days. Summer is a season for bare faces, so women looking to enhance their features without drowning them out will appreciate some of the ethereal trends that have emerged this season. White, shimmery eye shadow provides just a hint of glamour. White eyeliner and shadow can open up deep-set eyes or help small eyes appear larger. To achieve glowing skin, use tinted moisturizers and bronzers rather spending hours outdoors soaking up potentially harmful sun. Use bronzer with a very light hand and apply to the areas the sun would normally touch, such as the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose and forehead. Pair this with a liquid shimmer or illuminator and your skin will look dewy and fresh. Berry-stained lips go well with bare or shimmery eyes, and they’re the perfect way to perk up minimal makeup. Women can layer the deep-pink color depending on how daring they want to be.
Crop tops
Crop tops remain a fashion trend this season. Because they’re not for everyone, it’s unlikely this style will become oversaturated. This season the crop top is about showing just a hint of the midriff, which can make the look more attainable. Of course, short tops can be reserved for athletic wear or swimsuits for those people who are not yet daring enough to incorporate them into their everyday wardrobe.

Accessories perfectly complete seasonal ensembles
Regardless of their fashion sense, many people realize that accessories can enhance personal style and provide the finishing touch to an outfit. Whether it’s an eye-catching necklace, a set of face-framing glasses or a hat to add an air of mystery, the key to a great accessory is finding pieces that work in concert. Robindira Unsworth’s soft and romantic Blush Collection features handcrafted pendant necklaces that possess an heirloom quality. Smoky quartz, white topaz, morganite, silver, and gold foil doublets complemented by a palette of luminescent tones add just the right amount of shimmer to any look. Earthy tones help them transition well from the heat of the summer to the cool, crisp days of autumn. British-born, New York transplant Richard Mewha founded Bevel, an artisanal eyewear company that provides looks worn by some of the most celebrated men and women around the world. Mewha believes eyewear is essential to personal style and reflects this with a focus on comfort, fit, flattering colors, and great shapes. These elements blend together to create a timeless accessory to complete any look.

Robb’s Ride Riders started out from the USCC building on Friday afternoon for the first day of Robb’s Ride in Grand Forks. More than 200 cyclists participated in the ninth annual event this past weekend. Riders from throughout B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Washington and Oregon rode for three days and covered over 370 kilometers. The ride raised $5,600 to help send youth to Pine’s Bible Camp for youth with financial barriers to attending camp. (Front right) Sonia McKinlay, Mary Sebastian (second right) and Kelsey Serwa (in red and white), an Olympic silver medallist in ski-cross at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, start out on the first portion of Robb’s Ride. Kelsey’s 79 year-old grandfather, Cliff Serwa is third from left.

Italian club visits Trail
ea
Sheri regnier West Kootenay Advertiser
With so much Italian history in Trail, it wasn’t a question of what to do with 35 “Americanas” for the day. It was a question of how to fit everything into one afternoon and still honour the American Italian Club’s one request. They wanted to shop Italian. “One of the key reasons they wanted to come was because they know in Trail we have specialty shopping in Italian foods,” said Toni Driutti, from Festa Italiana. “So they wanted to come and see some of Trail, they want to do some Italian shopping, and of course, play a little bocce.”
prised to hear that people living in big cities (Spokane’s population is over 200,000) often target Trail as the prime destination for authentic foods like mortadelle and prosciutto, fresh ricotta and burrata, hundreds of dried pasta varieties, Sicilian olives, Calabria’s pomodori secchi, imported olive oils, balsamics, “00” flour and plenty of other traditional fare. With so many authentic food choices at arms length in Trail, locals could lose sight that the shopping experience at Ferraro Foods and Star Grocery is unique in today’s big box-store world. Danny Ferraro, from Ferraro Foods, takes it all in stride, saying people from outside the area regularly take a trip into the city to grocery shop for imported foods. Within days of the Spokane group confirming its visit to Trail, Ferraro received a list of items the Spokane club asked to have on hand when they hit town Saturday. Authentic foods are difficult to find in most cities, he said, noting imported cheeses like ricotta (netted) and mozzarella, cured meats and imported flours, oils

and pasta, top the requests. The store’s meat department stocks traditional and difficult to find ingredients like tripe, oxtail, and baccalà that are staples in certain Italian dishes. Annually a store partner, this year it was James Ferraro, makes a trip to Italy to check out what’s new in the country’s food markets. Pasquale Amantea, owner of Star Grocery, says customers arrive on his Gulch doorstep from Grand Forks, Nelson, Creston, Cranbrook and the United States looking for everything from fresh sausages to cured meats, pastas, cheeses and choice olive oils. “We had a fellow in from Colville who bought a bunch of olive oils,” said Amantea in a previous interview. “He said they can’t find good ones in Spokane and area.” Aside from imported foods, both sites are known near and far for their tasty storemade sausages. “We sell them as far away as Saskatchewan,” said Amantea. “People come in and buy them to bring back to home to Alberta, up north to Yellowknife, Edmonton or even Vancouver Island.”

Henry Everett Stevenson Henry Everett Stevenson was born April 12, 1916 at Private Home Hospital on the 400 block of Falls Street in Nelson, BC. He passed away peacefully at Mountain Lakes Care Home on May 17, 2015 at the age of 99. He was predeceased by his father Hazen and mother Jenny Stevenson, sisters Margaret Valentine, Alice Jane Stevens Sloan, brother Frank Stevenson, son Ken Stevenson, grandson Rodney Park and nephew Bill Valentine. Henry is survived by his wife Audrey, sons Monty (Debie), Gerry and Ron; Granddaughters Sarah Tweddle, Cynthia St.Thomas, Amanda Stevenson, Robyn Stevenson, Natasha Stevenson and Selina Birk; Grandson Jason Park; 8 Great Grandsons, 6 Great Granddaughters; nieces Doris McLeod, Marcia Stacy (Ron) and nephew David Stevens (Wendy). Henry left high school in grade 10 and went to work for his father at Stevenson Machine Shop on the 700 block of Vernon St in Nelson. He became a machinist and later did sales and bookkeeping for the shop. Soon afterwards, his father made him a joint owner and the name changed to Stevenson Machinery Ltd. When Super Value bought the property in the 1960’s, the shop moved to Latimer Street (Nelson Brewing Company building) where work continued for several years. Later on, Henry and his son Ken moved to Airport Road and went into a sales business called Tecweld. He also worked with his friend Joe Ross who was planning to build a special snow plow blade for graders, and another friend, Jim Grady from Okanagan Helicopers, to manufacture and sell the “Monzoon Bucket”. When the patent ran out, another company started production under a new name, the “Bambi Bucket”. Much of the work on the buckets was done by machinists at Stevenson Machinery Ltd. These buckets were used all over the world. All you needed when you got the working parts was an empty 45 gallon drum to attach the parts to. They were also used for moving fingerlings (minnows) to mountain lakes quickly and to drop coal dust on Glaciers for scientific work. During World War 2, Henry joined the army. He trained in Vernon, BC during the cold winter and then was sent to Victoria BC. He was assigned to the “instrument shop” where he became very good at making the sites for the guns. He wanted to go overseas, but they said he was more valuable setting sites than he would be overseas. Henry was a joiner. He was a member of the Jr. & Sr. Board of Trade, Chamber of Commerce, Nelson Ski Club, Nelson Launch Club, Nelson Power Boat Association, West Kootenay Aero Club in Salmo, Nelson Pilots Association, BC Aviation Council, Canadian Aviation Historical Society, Masonic Lodge #23, Nelson Shrine Club (Gizah Temple 50 year member). Henry served a 2 year term as a City of Nelson Alderman from 1967-1969 and he also served on the Castlegar Airport Committee for many years (his name is on a Bronze Plaque in the lobby). Henry was a Charter and Founding member of the Nelson Lions Club and had a 30 year perfect attendance and a Lifetime Member. He became their Zone Chariman of 19E, travelling to Idaho, Washington and local West Kootenay Clubs. Henry was also made an honorary lifetime member of the Nelson Museum Archives, Art Gallery and Historical Society. He loved the water of Kootenay Lake and enjoyed the inboard boat he owned, but after watching race boats in regattas, he decided that he wanted to race. He built his first little race boat at Walton's Boat Shop and the second race boat in his basement. He always wanted to fly so he sold the inboard and bought a Cessna 140, but as the family grew, he decided he needed a bigger plane and bought a Cessna 172. Henry was also an avid skier, both on water and snow. Henry and Audrey were married July 14, 1946. They both loved traveling and made trips to the British Iles, Sweden, Norway, Denmark as well as other parts of Europe, Mexico, Hawaii and the Caribbean Islands. They also visited several American States and travelled across Canada twice. Henry loved Nelson and it's history and in later years, he spent many hours working with Shawn Lamb at the Nelson Museum cataloguing items and working on various exhibits. The family would like to thank all of the wonderful staff at Mountain Lakes Care Centre for the very special and loving care they gave Henry. Also to Dr. Janz for making his last days comfortable and peaceful. A Celebration of life for Henry will be held sometime in mid-July. An announcement for that occasion will be made soon.

Contemplative Pedagogy continued from page A14
“Dealing with 21st Century environmental issues can be emotionally exhausting,” says Rebecca Jacobson, an instructor in the Selkirk College School of Environment & Geomatics. “Just taking a few minutes out to contemplate the bigger picture or spending some time working silently and thoughtfully helps us to gain much needed perspective while deepening our compassion and desire to be a part of the solution.” The questions raised around introducing contemplative practice into the classroom range from incredibly simple to intriguingly complex. Contemplative practice can be as simple as taking a few moments to reflect and write. “Students have so appreciated starting their Health and Wellness class with a five minute period dedicated to writing in their gratitude journal,” says Jane Green who teaches in the Selkirk College Classroom & Community Support Worker (CCSW) Program. “This gratitude journal time seems to change their perspective from busy to present and grateful.”
Contemplative pedagogy provides a pathway for students to move beyond a narrow approach to subject material. “When contemplative practices and techniques are incorporated into our classrooms and educational institutions, there is an opportunity to develop a depth of learning that both students and faculty value and strive for,” says Dr. Elizabeth Lund, Coordinator of Selkirk College’s Rural Pre-Med Program and the engine behind bringing contemplative pedagogy to Selkirk College. Lund says students must be able to respond swiftly as well as thoughtfully to problems presented to them on a daily basis. “We aim to present subject material in a holistic, integrated fashion, to emphasize the many dimensions and repercussions associated with knowledge and invention,” she says. “Our minds are nimble and by incorporating contemplative practice into our classrooms we help to build the capacity of the mind to develop sustained awareness, focused attention, adapt, create, and engage with the subject material.” The retreat is open to educators at all levels. For more information or to register go online to selkirk. ca/event/contemplative-pedagogy-retreat.
