Obesity is a much bigger problem in the Fraser Valley communities, including Abbotsford, than in Metro Vancouver, according to one of many findings in a broad study of health in local communities. The My Health My Community survey was released by health authorities Tuesday and it shows how each municipality in the Lower Mainland stacks up on multiple indicators of health and wellbeing measured in 2012 and 2013. Abbotsford’s obesity rate – defined as having a body mass index greater than 30 – is set at 33 per cent, slightly lower than the Fraser Valley average of 34 per cent. Metro Vancouver’s obesity rate is 22 per cent, according to the report. Obesity was highest – 30 per cent or more – in areas such as Powell River, Chilliwack, Langley City, Mission, Maple Ridge and Abbotsford, while it was below 20 per cent in Whistler, Vancouver, Richmond, Port Moody and Burnaby.

150 minutes. “The survey is like a blood-test for our communities,” said Fraser Health chief medical health officer Dr. Victoria Lee. The data has helped pinpoint where the biggest problem areas are for certain types of health risk. The survey showed smoking rates are highest in Hope at 22 per cent, followed by Langley City at 18 per cent – significantly above the average of 11 per cent in both Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Abbotsford was lower than average at nine per cent. Langley City, Richmond, Maple Ridge and Surrey scored worst in general health, while North Shore communities and Whistler scored best, beating the provincial average. The findings also show how each city performs on various wellness measures, such as the amount of physical activity they get, consumption of fruits and vegetables, lengths of daily commutes and hours a day spent in front of screens. Obesity is a major risk factor for chronic disease onset and officials predict the data will shape strategies to help residents improve their lifestyle. The report states that using active modes of transportation for commuting, compared to driving, decreases the odds of being overweight or obese by 33 per cent, adding that transit users have 22 per cent lower odds and cyclists and walkers have 48 per cent lower odds. In the Fraser Valley, 81 per cent or respondents commute by car, six per cent by transit and nine per cent by walking or cycling; while in Metro, 55 per cent drive, 28 per cent commute on transit and 14 per cent bike or walk. Despite greater rates of obesity, Fraser Valley residents manage to get a bit more exercise than Metro Vancouver residents. In the Fraser Valley, 45 per cent of respondents got more than 150 minutes of weekly physical activity, while it was 44 per cent in Metro. Abbotsford ranked even higher, with 47 per cent of respondents getting active for more than

the Metro Vancouver transit tax referendum. Medical health officers at that time came out in support of the transit expansion, noting the evidence shows residents who walk, bike and take transit tend to be healthier. The highest proportion of residents who mainly walk or cycle to run errands were reported in Vancouver, New Westminster, North Vancouver and Langley City, while the lowest rates were in Abbotsford, Mission, Coquitlam, Langley Township and Chilliwack. Health officials say more physical activity and less time in cars can help ward off chronic disease, as can other lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, eating healthy foods and drinking responsibly. Detailed community profiles are posted on the survey’s website showing the ranking on 37 different indicators of health and wellbeing. Thieves make off with youngsters’ softball gear The Abbotsford Minor Fastball Association (AMFA) is reeling after thieves stole a box containing more than $2,000 worth of equipment for the organization’s youngest players. President Laara Green said the large job box – which had been chained to a fence – was carted off from Centennial Park elementary school over the May Long Weekend after the chain was cut. The box was found to be missing the following Tuesday by staff at the school. Inside was a range of equipment for the AMFA’s Learn-to-play softball program, including bats, bow nets for batting practice, special balls and a range of other practice equipment. But Green believes the thieves wanted the box, which fits into the back of a pick-up truck. Green is hoping the thieves may have discarded the contents and that someone may have found them, or seen something during the theft. “This is a huge inconvenience for the kids at AMFA as the softball season is well under way,” said volunteer Karen Jenner in an email. “Now the association has to scramble to find and replace the valuable equipment.” Anyone with information can contact police or the AMFA, at president@amfa. ca.

Landowners want ongoing payments for Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion ‘It’s our land and they’re guests on our land’ Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News

A group representing Fraser Valley owners say they want more than a lump sum payment in return for their blessing of the proposed expansion of Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline. The Collaborative Group of Landowners Affected by Pipelines (CGLAP) was formed last spring and represents nearly 100 owners of properties in Chilliwack, Langley and Abbotsford who are affected by the pipeline. Peter Reus, the group’s president and a Sumas Prairie grower, says more than 60 kilometres of the Trans Mountain pipeline cross 79 different properties owned by CGLAP members. Kinder Morgan has proposed to expand its pipeline, which runs from Northern Alberta, through Southern British Columbia and the Lower Mainland to Burnaby. Reus said representatives from the group – which has been granted intervenor status with the National Energy Board – have had productive meetings with Kinder Morgan, but that the stumbling point is an agreement with landowners over compensation. In February, the group submitted a proposal calling for what Reus describes as a “long-term business partnership” involving ongoing payments in return for landowners’ co-operation. Kinder Morgan countered in April by offering a one-time payout, but Reus said the group doesn’t intend on accepting the proposal. “We’re not against the pipeline, but we would like to have the proper compensation for the nuisance of this new pipeline in our land,” said Reus, whose own property contains 1.7 kilometres

of pipe. He said the existing pipeline, which dates back 62 years, has long been a “hassle” for property owners. Reus said farmers have to call the pipeline company and wait for their assistance with any plowing below 30 centimetres. That can take time, he said, and can be problematic when a farmer hopes to take advantage of a small window of good weather to get a crop in. He added that even the smallest alteration of the land near the pipeline can draw a helicopter – and all the disturbance the landing of such a craft brings – to farmers’ field. Reus is also working with a pair of University of the Fraser Valley professors who are studying the effect of pipelines – in particular, their temperature – on growing conditions. No results are available yet. “Now there is a chance for the pipeline company to make good,” Reus said. Kinder Morgan has been receptive to the owners’ issues, and has promised to bury the new expanded pipeline – which will be constructed 20 metres away from the existing pipe – significantly deeper. But the main missing piece is a financial agreement. “If you look around, if people want something for the years to come, for a corporation and for usage, something has to be paid,” he said. “I don’t think we are different from First Nations who want to work with industry. “It’s our land and they’re guests on our land.” Despite the differences over payments, Reus said the two sides remain talking and hope to resolve the issues soon.

Electric cars are the way of the future

An open letter to Henry Braun: I am a student at Abbotsford Christian Middle School. Here I stand for electronic vehicles in Abbotsford and in the Fraser Valley. Electronic vehicles are the way of the future. Fossil fuels are rapidly being depleted because the need to fuel cars is growing and this industry relies on this nonrenewable resource. Electronic cars are a green car as in an eco-friendly car. Electricity is a renewable resource. We rely on getting our power from hydroelectric dams, but here in the Valley I propose that we can lead the way to a less common source of electrical production which can be made from cow manure or any kind of waste from farms and water treatment plants. This can benefit our community by making us one of the few

cities that uses electricity instead of fossil fuels to fuel our vehicles. This will make and change how other communities look at us here in the Fraser Valley and how we live are lives, as we lead the way into the future of cars and an eco-friendly environment. As a start to this revolutionary industry, I suggest starting by educating the community by providing many more charging stations for the electronic vehicles currently on the market. Using the existing advertising billboards such as over the highways and streets, we could get the people talking about what our gas usage does to the environment and how electronic fuel makes our city cleaner and leads to fresher air in the Valley. Nine years ago, the Tokaryks’ lives dramatically changed. Abby, who was one and a half years old, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and “normal” was changed for their family. The diagnosis meant that they had to do eight to 10 finger pokes on Abby every day to test her blood sugars and give her two daily insulin injections. They did their first year of the Walk to Cure Diabetes, and Abby’s Army was formed. This year is their ninth year at the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes, and Abby’s Army is still driven to raise crucial funds for type 1 diabetes research. Funds raised at the Telus Walk go towards the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for research to discover, develop and deliver advances that cure, better treat and prevent type 1 diabetes. The 3 km walk is held Sunday, June 14 starting at 11 a.m. in Mill Lake Park in Abbotsford, and will include family fun, entertainment and walk for a cure. For more details, visit www.jdrf.ca/walk.

Warm weather means early strawberries, blueberries

B.C. strawberry growers are enjoying a very early crop and blueberry farmers are about to join them. A very mild winter and a warm, dry spring has been ideal for growing quality blueberries much sooner than usual, says Jason Smith, an Abbotsford blueberry farmer and chair of the B.C. Blueberry Council. “I’ve heard that some growers may start around the 15th of June in the eastern part of the Valley, Smith said. He expects many blueberry farms will be producing by about June 20-25 – well ahead of the typical start of the season between the end of June and July 5. Smith said there’s some risk the season could end earlier than normal as well if the weather stays mostly dry. “If I could control the weather, I would love to see a good strong inch of rain now, a good strong inch of rain in one week and then good, warm, dry weather around 25 to 27 degrees. Some strawberry farms began selling around May 18. Richmond strawberry farmer Bill Zylmans said he can’t remember his family ever harvesting this early since they started growing in 1952. “We didn’t have a winter, so the plants didn’t go dormant, he said.

The company that manages the Abbotsford Centre will change names from Global Spectrum to Spectra, the parent company Comcast Spectacor said in a press release. Comcast Spectacor announced that its three divisions – Global Spectrum, Ovations Food Services and Paciolan – will now operate as Spectra, a singular new brand. Now, Comcast Spectacor will consist of three primary businesses – the Philadelphia Flyers, the Wells Fargo Center and the new Spectra. Spectra will have three divisions – venue management (formerly Global Spectrum), food services and

hospitality (formerly Ovations Food Services), and ticketing and fan engagement (formerly Paciolan). The change will impact both the Abbotsford Centre, where Spectra provides venue management, and the Abbotsford Airport, where it provides ticketing and fan engagement services. “Spectra is all about creating unforgettable moments for fans,” said Dave Scott, president of Comcast Spectacor. “We can do that best with all services under one umbrella to provide end-toend solutions for venues, redefining fan experiences everywhere.”

Abbotsford Homeowners Want to Know The Value of Their Home, But Are Afraid to Ask! Abbotsford – A hassle-free service allows homeowners to receive up to date real estate market information speciÀc to their home without having to meet with a real estate agent. Some homeowners are reluctant to meet with a realtor as they may only be in the early stages of planning a move or may not yet know if they will move. “Should we sell or stay? How much equity do we actually have?” Often these questions cannot be answered without knowing the current value of your home. Determining the value of your home is based largely on comparing your home to similar homes that have recently sold. This comparative approach should consider several factors – features of each home, location, neighbourhood, length of time on the market, etc. However, access to this type of information is generally re-

served for the real estate agents and their clients. This free service provides each homeowner with a Real Estate Market Update speciÀc to their property. This update includes detailed sales information of similar homes that have recently sold within the homeowner’s area, as well as the current listings. This data includes a photograph of each home, asking prices and selling prices, the number of days on the market, price reductions and a complete description of each home. To have a free Market Update sent to you, specially tailored for your home, call this 24 hour free recorded message at 1-800-251-4944, enter extension #4811. This hassle free, no obligation service is provided by Rod Poole of Landmark Realty Corp. You may also call Rod’s ofÀce directly at 604-309-6068.

Sentenced for breach Previously served jail time for child porn

Vikki HOPES

Abbotsford News

An Abbotsford man who previously served a jail term for possessing child pornography has received an additional seven days in prison for breaching his bail conditions. Sean Leblanc, 23, was sentenced Friday in Abbotsford provincial court. He was initially charged with three counts of breach, but two of the charges were stayed. Leblanc was released from prison on bail after being charged with three offences in May 2013: importing/distributing child porn, luring a child under the age of 16 and possessing child porn.

The conditions of his bail included that he not possess any device that could connect to the internet and that he not attend parks, daycares, community centres or other places where a person under 16 could be present. He was charged with breaching those conditions in August 2013 after he was found with a cellphone and was located by police in the parking lot of a church that also runs a daycare facility. Before the breach charges were dealt with in court, Leblanc was sentenced on the child pornography offences, receiving a 45-day jail sentence in February of this year on the possession charge. The other two charges were stayed.

Moir acquitted on bail offences

Accused killer Dustin Moir has been acquitted of two charges of breaching his bail conditions. The ruling was made recently in provincial court based on offences that had allegedly occurred in June 2014 in Maple Ridge. Moir, 29, was charged with the breaches while out on bail last year awaiting a new trial after having his 2010 first-degree murder conviction overturned for

the death of 14-year-old Chelsey Acorn of Abbotsford. Her remains were found in April 2006 in a shallow grave near the Carolin Mines exit off the Coquihalla Highway near Hope. Her skull had been crushed with a rock sometime in the fall of 2005, and she had been strangled and buried naked. Moir and his dad, Jesse Blue West, were each convicted at separate trials of the first-degree

murder of Acorn. Moir’s conviction was overturned on appeal in January 2013, and he was released from prison on bail in August of that year. Moir was also charged last year with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm in relation to a road-rage incident in July. He was found guilty of that charge last month and received a conditional discharge and a year of probation.

MESSAGE FROM CHIEF CONSTABLE BOB RICH

MESSAGE FROM DEPUTY CHIEF DAVE SCHMIRLER

Our Department believes it is our job to make Abbotsford safe. Between 2008 and 2013, we were able to see reported crime reduced by close to 40%. In both 2008 and 2009, gang violence was creating significant safety risks in our community. By going all hands on deck and working with the community, gang violence has been held in check in Abbotsford. 2014 though, was a tough year. It is the first year since 2008 that crime has gone up in Abbotsford, and bluntly, this year is proving to be a tough one yet again. We can’t promise we will drive crime back down again this year, but we can promise to do all we can to once again push down crime rates. We won’t stop trying until we figure it out! One thing: We need your help. Making Abbotsford safe is something we do with you. Secure your property, watch out for your neighbors, phone 911 if you see something that might be a crime in progress. If you have a car that is easily stolen, please secure it with a steering wheel lock. With your help, we can succeed in our mission to make Abbotsford the safest City in BC!

As the newly promoted Deputy Chief of Operations in September 2014, I was faced with a number of challenges in addressing our crime rates alongside some significant system changes in how we do police business. The challenge of reduced staffing and budgets meant we have had to do better with less and we spent 2014 becoming more focused on our tasks. Our Crime Reduction and Forensic Identification Units’ productivity were highlights for the Operations Division as well as improvements in our Domestic Violence Unit. We now see it fully staffed with APD Detectives alongside other Community resources such as the Ministry of Family & Child Development and Probation dealing with the most serious domestic violence cases.

MAYOR HENRY BRAUN

POLICE OFFICER RECRUITING Join our team! If you are interested in joining a progressive organization that is consistently open to change and development, consider becoming a member of our team. We are proud to be one of Canada’s policing leaders. Maybe the APD is where you should be?

Emissions down at Metro garbage incinerator

m.abbynews.com

June 5, 2015 24th Annual Abbotsford Police Challenge Run Join us on June 13, 2014 and help support BC’s Special Olympians. Sign up for a 5KM or 10KM route through west Abbotsford’s beautiful trails! COST: Registration before June 12, 2015: Adult $40, Senior $20, Student (up to grade 12) $18 Race Day Registration: Adult $45, Seniors and Students $20 REGISTRATION: Download the registration form: http://bit.ly/1EHYxzo (drop off completed form and payment).

Metro Vancouver’s garbage incinerator has cut its emissions by 53 per cent since completing a major pollution control upgrade over the past year. The $7-million retrofit by plant operator Covanta means the plant’s nitrogen oxides emissions now make up 0.4 per cent of the total in the region, down from 0.8 per cent. That’s just over one third of the emissions allowed under the current limit set by the provincial government, according to Metro. The plant is still awaiting a new operating certificate from the environment ministry – Metro’s application for one was challenged by the Fraser Valley Regional District, which demanded tougher pollution controls and testing. The waste-to-energy plant is also reporting a

major drop in revenue in 2014. It took in nearly $5.5 million from selling electricity, but that’s down from $7.4 million in 2013. Power generation was offline for part of the year because of repairs to a failed turbine blade, and a new electricity purchase deal is now in effect with BC Hydro that pays Metro lower prices than before. Metro officials say the plant remains by far the most cost-effective method of disposing of garbage, compared to using the Vancouver Landfill or trucking it to the Cache Creek Landfill, which the region wants to stop using in favour of a new waste-to-energy plant. That plan has met with stiff resistance from some regional and municipal politicians, including Abbotsford, over concerns about deteriorating air quality in the Valley. The project has yet to be approved by the provincial government.

Notice of Public Information Meeting SRP #1538 – 1348 Lefeuvre Road The City received an application to deposit approximately 745,000 cubic metres of soil at the property located at 1348 Lefeuvre Road. The deposit area will be reclaimed for agricultural use once the soil deposit operations are complete in ¿ve years.

How can I provide input: You may attend this meeting in person, send a submission in writing via email to sdehaan@abbotsford.ca or fax it to 604-853-2219 by 4:30 pm on Monday, June 8, 2015. If you have further questions, please contact, Stanley de Haan, Soil Permit Coordinator, at 604-864-5514 or email sdehaan@abbotsford.ca.

Small Curbside Collection Containers The City is phasing out the use of small curbside collection containers such as the 7L kitchen catcher pail. These small containers are intended for in-house use and are not designed for curbside collection. They are not durable enough for curbside collection, and do not meet the container height requirement for curbside collection. If you need to replace or purchase a new curbside collection container, please ensure it is designed for outdoor curbside collection. You may continue to use the small containers in-house and empty into an acceptable curbside container. Curbside collection containers for both garbage and compostables must be designed for outdoor curbside collection and have the following features: • are 80 litres or smaller; • have graspable handles (two graspable handles are required for containers greater than 50 litres); • have a secure lid; • are less than 23 kg (50 lb.) after waste is placed in container; and • are between 56 and 76 cm tall (22 - 30 inches). These features will ensure collection ef¿ciency and reduce the likelihood of worker injury. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Engineering Department at 604-864-5514 or eng-info@abbotsford.ca.

Once full, the boxes will be picked up by UPS and shipped to TerraCycle, an independent recycling agency which specializes in diverting from landfills material that municipalities deem “nonrecyclable.” Among the items that can be deposited in the boxes are plastic air freshener cartridges, trigger heads on spray bottles, screw caps from bathroom and kitchen cleaners, and used packages of disposable cleaning wipes. Although these products are technically recyclable, the high cost of separating mixed plastics means the infrastructure to recycle them isn’t available across the country.

An Abbotsford dental office is offering a day of free dentistry, providing free fillings, extractions, or cleanings to patients on Friday, June 19. The staff at Clayburn Dental (3033 Immel St.) will host a free Dentistry from the Heart (DFTH) event. Last year, Clayburn Dental assisted over 80 people and donated $35,285 in free dental work. Registrations starts at 7:30 a.m., but at last year’s event people started lining up the day before at 5 p.m. This year, the event will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with 50 volunteers ready to help out. DFTH started with New Port Richey dentist Dr. Vincent Monticciolo as a way of giving back to the community. DFTH is a registered non-profit organization that has contributed more than $8 million in free dentistry.

Health clinic for gay men now open

The first health clinic in the Fraser Valley that is geared toward gay and bisexual men opened this week in Abbotsford. The centre will run every Monday from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Abbotsford public health unit, 34194 Marshall Rd. The service is a partnership between Fraser Health and Health Initiative for Men (HIM) and is the fifth such clinic to open in the Lower Mainland. The two agencies conducted an anonymous health survey, starting in March, of gay and bisexual men living east of Surrey. Dr. Michelle Murti, medical health officer with Fraser Health, said the survey indicated that one-quarter of respondents did not have a family doctor and one-third indicated they had not informed their doctor that they were sexually involved with men.

“There’s still a lot of stigma associated with it,” Murti said. She said the health centre will be staffed by one or two nurses and will provide counselling, free condoms, testing for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, and information about sexual health in a safe and welcoming environment. Murti said the clinic could lead to other programs and services, such as yoga and wellness classes. The first two health centres opened in Vancouver in 2009 and 2011, and Murti said about one-third of the clients were from the Fraser Valley from as far away as Hope and Chilliwack. The service is offered on a drop-in basis or by appointment at 604488-1001 (ext. 227) or through the Abbotsford location at 778-9881946 (only during clinic hours). Cancer foundation knocks on doors

THE ABBOTSFORD ARTS COUNCIL PRESENTS

THE ENVISION FINANCIAL

Seeking donors for monthly giving program BC Cancer Foundation door-to-door canvassers are currently in Abbotsford. Canvassers introduce local residents to the BC Cancer Foundation – the largest funder of cancer research in the province – and its monthly donor program. Monthly donations support the life-saving research taking place at the BC Cancer Agency, helping to change the way the world prevents, detects and treats cancer. For security and safety purposes, canvassers wear ID badges and BC Cancer Foundation purple vests. Canvassers invite residents to take part in the foundation’s monthly giving program only and do not accept cash or one-time gifts at the door. People who sign up for monthly gifts receive an email confirmation immediately. For more information about the door-to-door program, the monthly giving program, or a neighbourhood fundraiser, call Sue McCulloch at 1-888-906-2873 or visit bccancerfoundation. com.

GET READY FOR SUMMER!

SMART AND CARING

STAY COOL & FRESH IS YOUR AC READY?

DID YOU KNOW?

Air and water can get into the A/C system which can reduce the efficiency of the system and can also lead to corrosion or fungus, mould and bacterial growth that is blown into the passenger area.

THIS IS WHAT WE CAN DO...

To complete the HVAC service a technician will clean out the air conditioning lines, evaporator and ventilator and then kill any bacteria mould or fungi. Then deodorize the entire A/C system and the vehicles interior. Finally, after a complete inspection for leaks and wear, the technician will measure and replenish the oil in the compressor. The air inside your vehicle will be much cleaner and 4 to 5 degrees cooler, thanks to increased efficiency.

Big ideas fair in Abby Community can learn more about OCP update Abbotsforward is hosting a “big ideas fair” as part of the update of Abbotsford’s official community plan. Council recently endorsed the seven big ideas behind the update to the city’s plan, which is intended to guide decision-making on growth and development. The event on June 12 and 13 in Historic Downtown Abbotsford is intended to be a checkin with residents to ensure city staff heard them correctly. The event will provide an opportunity for residents to discover the seven big ideas, read suggestions made by residents during the engagement period, chat with city planners and watch the video from the Abbotsforward Thinking speaker event. Interactive displays will show the different engagement activities, results from the online survey, the seven big ideas and general approaches to growth for Abbotsford’s future. The event will be held at 2617 Montrose Ave. (formerly Agape Bridal) on Friday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tournament win for Red Sox

The Abbotsford Red Sox bantam baseball squad beat the White Rock Yankees Sunday to win the River Rush Tournament in Mission. The squad, led by Coach Greg Masten, beat the Yankees to open the tournament Friday. They followed that with a win Saturday against Mission and a close loss to Aldergrove. On Sunday, they beat Mission again to book their spot in the final. That game was close, but the Red Sox held on for the win. The team was also awarded the Sportsmanship Trophy for the eight-team tournament.

Twins land U.S. scholarships Alicia and Cierra Roufosse starred for Mouat Hawks

After leading the Mouat Hawks to the provincial championship final in 2015, Alicia (left) and Cierra Roufosse will play NCAA Division 1 basketball for the University of San Francisco Dons. GARY AHUJA Abbotsford News

W.J. Mouat Hawks star basketballers Cierra and Alicia Roufosse have signed letters of intent to play with the University of San Francisco Dons, the school announced earlier this month. The Roufosse twins helped lead the Hawks to the provincial championship final in 2015, with Alicia named to the first all-star team and Cierra named to the second team.

Alicia also participated in Canada’s 2015 Women’s National Age Group Assessment Camp. While the pair had previously indicated they would be playing at the University of the Fraser Valley, they have instead opted to play with the Dons in the NCAA’s Division 1. “Both Cierra and Alicia are outstanding additions to the USF family,” said head coach Jennifer

Azzi in a press release. “Both possess a strong work ethic and a desire to win at the highest level, and we are excited to coach them and help them develop.” Cierra and Alicia are identical twins and both stand six-footthree. Azzi was enthusiastic about Cierra’s versatility and midrange game, along with Alicia’s ability to post-up and defend.

I’m not saying there is anything fundamentally wrong with this setup. It’s just not my first choice. That said, it’s not a deal breaker. Bluetooth comes standard on all models; so do power windows. And of course, the aforementioned Magic Seats, which allow you to configure the cabin in ways that will astonish you. On the road, the Fit also shines. OBITUARIES

COLLINS Bruce Alexander Feb. 20, 1932 ~ May 30, 2015

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Bruce following a lengthy illness. He is survived and missed by his loving wife Dickie, his son Steven and his daughter Sheila (Sue). Also missing him are his grandchildren: Taylor (16), Finn (7) and Trinity (6), his two sisters Joyce and Doris in Saskatchewan and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Bruce grew up on a farm in Palmer, Saskatchewan and went on to become an Automotive Accountant. He worked at several dealerships in Saskatchewan and Abbotsford. He later worked for Corrections Canada until his retirement. Bruce was predeceased by his parents Alex and Gertrude Collins, sister Norma Bowler and brother Glenn Collins. He was a man of few words who loved his family with quiet strength - he was especially proud of his grandchildren. Bruce was an avid reader and was seldom without a book in his hands. The family wishes to thank the staff on the P.A.T.H. and A.C.E. units for their excellent care. As per Bruce’s wishes, there will be no service.

HOWIE Flora

Sept. 5, 1923 ~ May 31, 2015

Flora passed away peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Saviour at Elim Village in Surrey, BC May 31, 2015. Born in Liverpool, England, immigrated to Vancouver, BC in 1927 and late of Abbotsford, BC. Predeceased by her brother John Robertson in 1994 and husband Jack of 64 years in 2011. She is survived by her loving children; Sharon Russell, Daphne (Hans) Wolfs, David (Lenore) Howie, Carol Pollex, 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and brother Marcus Robertson. Flora loved her English garden, singing and playing piano and was given to hospitality. The family wishes to express our sincere thanks to the staff of Elim for their loving and compassionate care of our dear mother. “Til we meet on that beautiful shore”.

STICKLE

SVEINSON

Peter Sigmar (Sig) June 27, 1933 ~ June 1, 2015

Sig passed away after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease holding the hand of Joan, his wife of 53 years. His family wants to thank the caring nurses at Chilliwack hospital who helped all of us through his last days. He is survived by his children, David of Storthoaks, SK; Karen (Bruce) of Abbotsford, Todd (Krystal), and Neil (Sophie) both of Winnipeg Beach, MB, five grandchildren, and his brother Cliff of Sandy Hook, MB. Sig was born in Selkirk, MB, moved to Abbotsford, BC in 1977 and retired to Chilliwack in 1998. No service at Sig’s request. He will be laid to rest in Gimli, MB between his mother and father. In lieu of flowers, donations to BC Parkinson Society in Sig’s name would be appreciated. Sig will always be loved and missed but wants his family to remember to miss him, but not too long, miss him but let him go.

Evelyn Annie (Tyas) April 13, 1934 ~ May 31, 2015

Evelyn Annie Stickle passed away suddenly on May 31, 2015. Predeceased by her youngest daughter Angela Stickle, husband Byron Stickle, father and mother Bill and Annie Tyas, brothers Arthur and Billy Tyas and sister Noreen Yuill. She is survived by her loving family; daughter Pamela Plosz, son Gregory Gorsky, (Barbie), son Frazer Stickle, (Mary-Lou), sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and George Friezen, sister-in-law Doreen Tyas, granddaughter Ashley Gorsky, grandson Dylan Plosz, granddaughter Kelsey Gorsky, grandson Clint Gorsky, granddaughter Allison (Grace) Stickle, granddaughter Victoria Ross and several loved nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada and England. Evelyn was born in Mission, BC, she married and worked throughout Alberta and BC in her younger years and always shared memories about a few of the special locations such as Banff and Ocean Falls. In the early 60’s she made Vancouver her home and started a family. She remained in Vancouver and was a proud advocate of her beautiful City. Evelyn was a kind and compassionate person who enjoyed her large circle of friends; she had a love of music, fashion and politics. At the age of 74 until very recently she shared her life with her granddaughter Grace who was 9 years old after Angela passed away suddenly. Grace and her Nanny had a special bond and looked after each other for the past 6 years. The past two years Evelyn experienced some health issues; however with the assistance of her family, friends and special care givers she was feeling better, happy and appreciative of all the love she was receiving. Evelyn will be dearly missed and forever loved. A celebration of life will be held in Mission, BC. In lieu of flowers donations to the Canadian Liver Foundation would be appreciated; online information at liver.ca.
