It could cost as much as $100 million to reroute trucks away from Downtown Mission via a new bypass. That’s Mayor Randy Hawes’ estimate, after the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure rejected the district’s idea of directing heavy rigs onto Murray Street, through the industrial area and Junction Mall, and back onto the Lougheed Highway west of the town core. The ministry suggested instead it could

do a study of the cost of a new bypass upon the request of the district. Hawes isn’t optimistic. A $50-million plan to build a new bypass several years ago is no longer viable because the land isn’t available. Also, costs could be double now, and even though the district would want to share the expense with senior governments, Hawes is doubtful the provincial ministry would lay out that much cash. The ministry rejected the district suggestion to divert trucks at Murray Street for var-

ious reasons including the fact the overpass has a 12 per cent grade and tight turning radius. That forces the trucks to slow down considerably, creating a large back-up in traffic on the Lougheed Highway. It is also a safety concern. During Monday’s council meeting, some councillors said they felt widening the road before the Murray Street turn and creating a longer left turn lane could alleviate delays. “I still think they (the ministry) are doing a cop-out on us because they could extend that left turn lane on First Ave-

nue,” said Coun. Jim Hinds. “They’ve always said that trucks can’t make that turn. Well, stand on that corner, any day of the week, and you’ll see everything from little delivery vans to B-trains, Super Bs, logging trucks with 40-foot logs on it, you name it, they make the turn.” He said the ministry could adjust that corner if it wanted to. There is no timeline for when a bypass cost study will be completed and sent to the district.

There could be new sidewalks and lighting on First Avenue in the near future, if the price is right. Mission council has asked staff to prepare a cost report on the project, and plan to ask the provincial government to pay for half of the renovations. The move is part of the continuing discussions on improving the look of Mission’s downtown core. Staff are to examine the cost of replacing the lights and sidewalks only, without consideration for other aesthetic additions such as benches, trees or decorative striping. Mission Mayor Randy Hawes said those aspects could complicate the request for funding. “We have asked our MLA to work with us to do some cost-sharing downtown.” Hawes wants to get a firm commitment of funding before looking at additional improvements. He believes any decorative designs would be “relatively minor in cost” compared to the sidewalk replace-

ment itself. While the cost study has not been performed, it is believed the replacement project would cost between $2 million and $3 million. One suggested change – to increase the sidewalk’s width by half a metre on each side – was met with criticism. “I personally think narrowing the street by one metre makes it a little more dangerous,” said Hawes. Homeowners in Mission currently pay for water based on an average amount, rather than the actual amount used. Despite some speculation that this is a move towards having district-wide water metering, Mission Mayor Randy Hawes said that is not a fore-

gone conclusion. He recalls the price tag to make such a move would be in the $12-million range. “Does it really pay to do that?” he asked. “Let’s establish how much water we are actually using.” He said the project could also help identify any leaks the district may have in its water system. The 500 devices will be purchased from U.S.-based Corix Water Products LP.

Drivers in the downtown core will notice new lines being painted along one block of First Avenue. Council has agreed to have parallel parking lines painted on both sides of the main thoroughfare from Welton Street to James Street. The four-month project will be used to assess whether more cars can park on First Avenue when offered designated spaces. Stuart Coates is the newest member of the Mission Sports Hall of Fame. He was inducted on Monday night during a brief presentation at council. He is the first person to be inducted under the builder category. Coates has been active in the sport of soccer for more than 45 years – 30 of them with the Mission Soccer Club. During his time there he held almost every role imaginable, including club president, coach, equipment manager, tournament manager, official and Soccer BC representative, to name just some. While he has dedicated his life to soccer, it isn’t his only sports involvement. Coates has been active with Mission Special Olympics for the past 25 years as well. He has served as coach and coordinator for several sports. However, he had his greatest success in soccer. He coached Team BC’s Special Olympic soccer squad to gold medal victories at the Canadian Championships and the World Championships held in China. In 2011, he received the Mission Lifetime Achievement Award. Coates is also vice-president of the newly formed Mission Sports Council, an organization created to give all sports in Mission a unified voice to council. “Stuart is a community builder and all of us should be proud,” said Mission Mayor Randy Hawes. Coates humbly accepted his award, without addressing the small crowd in attendance. A special plaque in his honour will now hang in the Mission Sports Hall of Fame, located in the Mission Leisure Centre.

‘Love’ the most important thing Mission couple celebrate 70th anniversary Clarence and Elsie Carter recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. They reminisced about events that had happened since their wedding on April 21, 1945, and agreed the years have passed too quickly. Clarence remembers the first time he met his wife Elsie in 1932. He was just 12 years old, and she was eight. Clarence’s grandfather ran the Silverdale post office at the time and he often helped the older gentle-

man bring the letters and parcels to the train station where they would be picked up by a clerk on the train and brought to Vancouver. Elsie lived on a farm near the river in Mt. Lehmann with her aunt. The two of them had to row their boat across the Fraser River in order to send their mail. It was a warm spring day when Elsie held up an envelope and asked Clarence to put her letter on the train. He didn’t know her name, and he didn’t

ask for it. He just knew she was the politest little girl he had ever met, and he couldn’t help notice how “cute” she looked in the nice dress she was wearing. For almost a year, Clarence never stopped thinking about the girl by the river and was surprised when he met her again at school. The young man attended Silverdale elementary school, which at the time was located at the end of Manzer Street, about two miles away from the river. Elsie had been held back from school until her sister, who was three years younger, was old enough to start and they could make the journey together. Clarence recognized Elsie immediately. He knew Elsie and her sister had to row across the river, then walk to school and he soon tried to help them out by meeting them by the river with his bike. He would often ride with one sister on the handlebars to school, then go back and pick up the other one. “I was pretty big then,” recalled Clarence. “I had a bike and a paper route.” The two became good friends and Clarence included Elsie in

Supporting seniors

As we age, our ability to live independently is gradually stripped from us. But a new report from the B.C. Seniors’ Advocate suggests that is happening faster than it needs to. According to Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie, many seniors are being moved into residential care facilities before they need that level of care, due to what she calls outdated and restrictive regulations. Many seniors could instead be accommodated in assisted living programs and facilities, retaining more of their independence later in life. Independent, active seniors are a big part of the Fraser Valley and are still contributing members of the community and economy through countless hours of volunteer efforts. Helping them maintain that independence should be the goal, rather than encouraging them into residential care.

The report recommends changes such as allowing seniors to apply for a provincial loan against equity in their home to pay for repairs, again allowing them to stay in the home and community they have loved for decades. Many of those homes are valuable, but that doesn’t mean much to a senior living alone on a fixed income, without spare cash to pay for repairs. It’s easy to think of seniors as not having much of a part in society other than playing with their grandchildren, but here, it’s common for seniors to mention they have been busier since retirement. It’s time the government recognize that becoming a senior doesn’t mean you are no longer a vital part of society, and help support seniors in their quest to remain independent.

B.C. goes long with its LNG bid Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views Opposition politicians were outraged over the B.C. government’s latest effort to secure its first major liquefied natural gas deal, announced last month. Premier Christy Clark, Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman and Finance Minister Mike de Jong signed agreements with Pacific Northwest LNG for a long-term gas royalty structure that could run for 30 years. The government says the deal guarantees minimum royalty revenue for the province, while the investors increase their revenue if the spread between gas prices in North America and Asia increases during the term. Pacific Northwest is a partnership of some of the biggest investors and gas customers: Malaysian state giant Petronas, its Canadian subsidiary Progress Energy, Chinese state firm Sinopec, Indian Oil Corp. and Japan Petroleum. These corporate giants will review a

project development agreement, and if they approve, Clark will convene the legislature to approve changes that would compensate them if the new LNG income tax increases. Environmental changes such as a “discriminatory” carbon tax increase or greenhouse gas regulations on LNG would also trigger compensation. Future changes to general carbon tax or corporate income tax rates would not. NDP leader John Horgan warned that “too much lolly” is being offered, with no word of job guarantees for B.C. or a deal with First Nations at the proposed site near Prince Rupert. “My biggest concern is that we’re tying the hands of future governments because a desperate government made commitments that they over-promised on and now they want to get a deal at any cost,” Horgan said. Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver called it “shocking and irresponsible,” repeating his prediction that the global market is swimming in gas and will never support huge green-field projects across B.C. For the investors, it’s like a mortgage. There are “subjects” to be removed before the deal closes, and this is a proposed $36-billion mortgage for pipelines, LNG processing and shipping facilities.

This isn’t just a political dispute. For example, Progress has drilled about 500 gas wells in northeastern B.C., and Petronas took it over with this development in mind. Without exports, B.C.’s whole gas industry is looking at a bleak future of low prices and demand.

It’s like a mortgage. There are subjects to be removed before the deal closes. Petronas delayed its investment decision to this year and cited exactly these concerns – certainty on taxation and royalties beyond the election cycle. With that in hand, their obstacles remain federal environmental approval and a revenue-sharing deal with a First Nation to host a terminal. Pacific Northwest CEO Michael Culbert notes that answers to questions posed

by the Lax Kw’alaams First Nation were submitted to federal regulators only days before they started voting on a $1-billion share of LNG proceeds over 40 years. The vote was a resounding no, despite a redesign that put pipelines on a suspension bridge over the most sensitive salmon habitat. Culbert suggests that given some time to examine environmental mitigation work, that answer may change. Does aboriginal title offer a veto over projects like this? According to the recent Supreme Court of Canada decision on the Tsilhqot’in case, the short answer is no. Objections could be overridden if governments determine a project is in the interest of the greater public. Talks have taken place with 19 First Nations affected by pipelines and facilities, and 14 have agreed. While they continue with Lax Kw’alaams and other Tsimshian Nations on the coast, it’s worth recalling that others are not so reluctant. The Nisga’a Nation has identified four sites as suitable for LNG terminals with a shorter pipeline route to the coast than Prince Rupert. Stand up for health and education I am writing a letter to the editor to publicly ask some questions of Mr. Dalton about his work as the Maple Ridge-Mission representative. First, let’s get it out of the way – I am a teacher, so yes, I have a vested interest in education in the province. But, I am also a parent with a young child in the system and my concerns are for her education as well as my career. I wanted Mr. Dalton to stand up for public education, and work to see it get the funding it deserves. He was a teacher, he should get it. Instead, he and his party have taken even more

money away from our districts. Dalton could apparently convince the Liberals that private schools needed more money, after all private schools have seen a massive increase in their funding from tax dollars and he was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Education for Independent Schools. But my child, like the vast majority of kids in this riding, is not in private school. I can’t afford it. So my question is, where is your advocacy on behalf of my child’s education? Or do you simply advocate for the privileged few? Shall we move on to

Stolen bike will be missed It has been two weeks now since you have stolen from me – a mountain bike. It was especially enticing with the $90 of goodies I had purchased only a week before. But there I go using large words. No hope from you understanding, let alone reading this. Also attached to the bike was a reusable bag with a favoured coat. In the coat pocket was my cell phone. I used it for job offers, fill-in work for sick co-workers, notice of my father’s illness worsening and other important calls. Not anymore. And then there was the red helmet connected to the crossbar. It was an older 21-speed mountain bike – blue with white letters. It has distinctive black fenders, new hand grips, seat and kickstand. Not only was it a joy to ride, but I used it to ride to and from work, shopping, etc. daily in the summer. If you’ve seen someone riding a bike but has not had one before, let the local police detachment know. I’d like it back.

a short time before moving back to Silverdale where they owned and operated a gas service station. Clarence tried logging and worked odd jobs before he began a 35-year career with the post office. Clarence and Elsie moved to a house on Grand Street near the Leisure Centre in 1967. They raised two children and now enjoy spending time with their grandchildren. Elsie is now hard of hearing and suffers from severe arthritis, but Clarence is happy to take care of her. The secret to a 70-year marriage is simply love, said Clarence. “You have to have faith, hope, and love. Lots of love. It’s the biggest thing,” said Clarence. “With it, you can stay married forever, as long as you have each other.”

Inspections take place tomorrow, race set for June 20 The Mission & District Soapbox Derby Association is busy getting into gear for race day June 20 at Stave Lake Road. Registration and inspection day will take place Saturday, June 6 with final registrations accepted at the Mission Leisure Centre between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Anyone wishing to be a part of the annual soapbox derby is encouraged to volunteer. About the race: Race day check-in runs from 7:30

to 8 a.m. with the races starting at 9 .a.m. Sign-in is open to participants aged eight to 14 years with a $30 entry fee. The day also includes hot dog eating contests and games for kids. The District of Mission has reached a three-year agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1267. The agreement brings negotiations to a conclusion and ensures stability for the district and employees through 2016. The agreement sets out wage increases at 0 per cent for 2014, one per cent in 2015, and 1.5 per cent for 2016, along with minor non-monetary language changes. The overall financial impact for 2015 is approximately $148,000, and will be funded from an accumulated surplus, so there will be no impact on taxes for 2015. The financial impact for 2016 is approximately $222,000, and will be addressed through the annual budgeting process. “We value and respect our employees and their dedication, and we are happy to have reached this agreement,” said Mayor Randy Hawes. CUPE local 1267 ratified the agreement on May 20.

HAYWARD LAKE RESERVOIR LOWER WATER LEVELS

As good as gold Mission water polo player a champion Mission’s Devyani McLaren won a gold medal and national title as a member of the Fraser Valley Water Polo U-16 girls team. The squad was competing in the National Club League Championship (held May 28-30) in Calgary and hosted by Water Polo Canada. McLaren was a force to be reckoned with during the event, scoring numerous goals and playing tough defence. The local squad defeated the topranked Calgary Renegades 14-12 in the gold medal final, with some tough challenges along the way.

In the semifinals, the Fraser valley squad earned a nail-biting, 13-12 victory over CAMO QC. Earlier this month, McLaren also won a silver medal with her Fraser Valley teammates during the Western Canadian championship, also held in Calgary. McLaren has lived in Mission for the past dozen years. She currently trains with head coach Justin Mitchell and swims with Brent Hayden. She previously swam with the Mission Marlins, but decided to switch to water polo and join the Fraser Valley Hi Performance squad.

Lower than average water levels will expose steep shorelines and slippery slopes along Hayward Beach and the entire reservoir shore. All beaches and the boat launch will be closed and fenced off for public safety. The picnic grounds will remain open and available for public use. Trails will remain open, however hikers will be unable to complete the Railway/ Reservoir Trail loop due to the closure of both Ruskin Dam and the Floating Bridge at Hairsine Creek. An environmental management plan has been developed to protect fish and wildlife during the lower water levels. 7TH AVENUE CONSTRUCTION To meet the demand for electricity and improved reliability, BC Hydro will be constructing a new, underground ductbank along the north side of 7th Avenue, Mission. $1 million mark reached Donations by Sasquatch Lions Club reach milestone The Sasquatch Lions Club reached a historic milestone last week. The local organization was handing out its annual donations to local groups and charities when it hit the $1 million mark. It turned out that the Mission Hospice Society was the organization that received the special cheque. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Since our clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beginning in 1980, members have worked at many fundraising projects to raise funds to support the children and seniors in our service area as well as families in need both here and around the world,â&#x20AC;? said Sasquatch Lions Club president Kenny Gordon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is the result of all members of the Sasquatch Lions Club, past and present, who have given so much of their time and talents over the past 35 years, and I would ask that you recognize these efforts at this time,â&#x20AC;? During warm weather, pet guardians must take precautions against the danger of heat exhaustion and heatstroke for their pets. The temperature in a parked car, even in the shade with the windows partly open, can rapidly reach a level that will seriously harm or even kill your pet. Leaving your pet in a car with the air conditioning on is also taking a risk, as many pets have died as the result of a faulty air-conditioning system. If you see a dog in a car on a warm or humid day which you believe may be in trouble, ask nearby stores to page customers. If the dog is in distress, call the BCSPCA’s Animal Cruelty Hotline at 1-855-622-7722. The call centre is open seven days per week: Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If it is an animal emergency outside of these hours, contact your local police department, RCMP or animal control immediately. Dogs (and cats) cool themselves by panting and by releasing heat through their paws. On summer days, the air and upholstery in your vehicle can heat up to high temperatures that make it impossible for pets to cool themselves. Your dog will be more comfortable

A small committee then developed and we made a presentation to Mayor Neufeld and Council. We received â&#x20AC;&#x153;support in principleâ&#x20AC;? and proceeded to hold regular monthly meetings. Today, we have strong support from District staff, particularly Parks and Public Works, and have valuable affiliations with non-profit groups that share our goal: creation of an even more livable and resilient community; and the Oyama Garden has replaced the pile of dirt.

In the Spotlight Burning Ban A Full Open Burning Ban is in Effect Due to the extreme dry weather conditions, the District of Mission Fire/ Rescue Service has declared a total ban on all Open Burning. This includes campfires and the use of open fires for cooking, warmth or ceremonial purposes including Recreational Fire Pits. The burning ban also prohibits the Use of fireworks, however it does not restrict fire in stoves using gas, propane, or briquettes. Also at this time, any other open burning, including campfires, will not be permitted in the District of Mission, including in the Municipal Forest. Due to the serious potential consequences to property, the environment, and wildlife, fins may be issued to those not following the ban.

Water Restrictions in Effect Stage 2 water restrictions are in effect. This means watering is restricted as follows: Even numbered addresses: Wednesday and Saturday, 6 am to 8 am ONLY Odd numbered addresses: Thursday and Sunday 6 am to 8 am ONLY New lawn permits are available through the Engineering department.

Road Work on Dewdney near Mill Pond Public Works Crews have begun a major capital work project on Dewdney Trunk Road, north of Richards Avenue in the Mill Pond area. The road requires extensive surface and underground repairs. Only single lane closures will be required but delays should be expected and the use of alternate routes is recommended. We expect that preliminary work will be completed in June, followed by asphalt work that will continue into mid-summer. Your cooperation and patience are requested through this process. Please pay attention to warning and advisory signs and our traffic control people and ‘Drive Safe’!

Although this is their first studio recording they have been playing together as a unit for over five years. “The cohesion and interaction within the band, as well as the overall positive vibe, reflects the sense of camaraderie we have developed on and off of the bandstand,” said Stillman. The quartet has performed several times in Montreal, including an appearance in 2009 at the l’Off Jazz Festival. They toured Central Canada in

2011 and, in 2013, performed a special concert in Montreal featuring tenor saxophonist extraordinaire, Kelly Jefferson. For this special, onenight performance in Mission, Stillman will be joined by fellow Missionite Joe Poole, Paul Rushka, and Tony Foster. Mission’s Jason Stillman and his group, the Jason Stillman Quartet, will be holding a CD release party at The Stage on June 19. The quartet is a Montreal-based ensemble featuring Stillman, alto sax; Josh Rager, piano; Fraser Hollins, bass; and Dave Laing, drums. The group’s repertoire consists primarily of Stillman’s original compositions with some jazz standards. Stillman’s rich, expressive tone and his creative invention combined with plenty of solid group interaction make for an exciting listening experience. Stillman began playing saxophone at the age of 12 at Mission’s Dewdney Elementary School. He was primarily self-taught until post-secondary studies where he received formal training from some of the country’s most esteemed saxophonists including Remi Bolduc, John Johnson and Kelly Jefferson. The quartet has recently recorded their debut CD entitled Prelude, which was released through Multiple Chord Music (MCM) on March 20,

The 25th season of the Envision Financial Twilight Concert Series continues tonight (June 5) at Fraser River Heritage Park with a performance by Robert Bateman Secondary School’s jazz band. The concert runs from 7 to 8 p.m. This will be the Bateman band program’s first appearance at the Twilight Concert Series, though they are no strangers to the stage. They perform regularly in the Fraser Valley, and in April travelled to Sun Peaks for the Cantando Festival, where the Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Concert Choir all earned silver ratings for their performances. NOTICE OF ROAD CLOSURE Please be advised that commencing Tuesday June 2, 2015 Public Works Crews are beginning a major capital work project on Dewdney Trunk Road, north of Richards Avenue in the Mill Pond area. The road requires extensive surface and underground repairs. Only single lane closures will be required but delays should be expected and the use of alternate routes is recommended. Cycling for Diversity sees fifth year On the Spot

The Cycling4Diversity team finished its 11-city tour with 15 schools during Cyling4Diversity Week from May 17 to 23. The first two days of our four-day trip took us to five Okanogan communities and six schools. The main message of our ride was to encourage students to embrace diversity and to do one positive act during the week. The makeup of diversity is very different in the Okanogan compared to the Lower Mainland. School principals and mayors from the various communities cycled with us to our locations. The Cycling4Diversity Foundation also celebrated its fifth year, surpassing

100 schools and visiting every community from Vancouver to Chilliwack, including Victoria and the Okanagan. This could not have been done without many of our team members and community sponsors. I was recently asked if C4D has made has made a difference. Hearing the responses from teachers, parents and students I would have to say our team has

made a difference and our organization is growing in a positive direction. This year we were fortunate to be able to have Abbotsford Police Det. Roy McBeth, who joined us for two days. He delivered a powerful and emotional message about how his son had some struggles in school and how the other children joined him in helping him finish a race around the track. He also shared about getting a kidney from his boss, who was able to donate a part of his kidney, giving McBeth a second chance. Through this experience he shared that we’re all the same inside and bleed red. Harjit Sajjan, a lieutenant-colonel in the Canadian military,

who joined us for the first day said, “I realized that a shared experience can really light up a kid’s day.” As he was recounting his experiences in Bosnia, a pair of students mentioned they grew up in the Balkan country. Sajjan addressed them with the country’s traditional greeting and

watched them light up – transforming from timid and shy into smiling and happy. “Being different is unique and being unique gives us strength.” Now, that we’ve met our first milestone, I feel the best is still yet to come for C4D. KenHerar@gmail.com

MAKE ROOM FOR FAITH Science and philosophy are both truly important human endeavors. Without them, we would probably still be stuck in the Dark Ages. And it is worth pointing out, that science a n d p h i l o s o p h y, and indeed, all areas of learning, give one a renewed appreciation for the wondrous creation of which we are all a part. But, it is also important to realize that knowledge has its limits. We might say that knowledge is limited to the empirical realm, the realm of experience, whereas faith takes us beyond the realm of experience. As the great German philosopher Kant stated in his Critique of Pure Reason, we must “limit knowledge in order to make room for faith.” Kant was warning the metaphysicians of his day, who incorrectly thought that they could know about God and the super-sensible realms of the universe, that human knowledge simply could not extend that far. And at the same time, he was battling the unbelief of atheists who thought that faith was nullified by modern science. Quite to the contrary, Kant showed that human knowledge is limited to the empirical realm, i.e., the realm of experience, but that this has the very important benefit of making room for faith. So, we must make room for faith in our lives and open up our hearts to the reality of God.

Raised in Mission B.C., the dedicated 21 year old is an athlete, full-time student at the University of Calgary, and works as a Recreational Aide at a seniors home. Liz’s mission is to give back to the community by talking to groups about balancing education with high-performance hobbies, goal-setting, and how to pursue a passion in life, in hopes to inspire others. Her goal is to become a member of Canada’s National Bobsleigh team, and she is well on her way to achieving that. COLLINS Bruce Alexander Feb. 20, 1932 ~ May 30, 2015

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Bruce following a lengthy illness. He is survived and missed by his loving wife Dickie, his son Steven and his daughter Sheila (Sue). Also missing him are his grandchildren: Taylor (16), Finn (7) and Trinity (6), his two sisters Joyce and Doris in Saskatchewan and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Bruce grew up on a farm in Palmer, Saskatchewan and went on to become an Automotive Accountant. He worked at several dealerships in Saskatchewan and Abbotsford. He later worked for Corrections Canada until his retirement. Bruce was predeceased by his parents Alex and Gertrude Collins, sister Norma Bowler and brother Glenn Collins. He was a man of few words who loved his family with quiet strength - he was especially proud of his grandchildren. Bruce was an avid reader and was seldom without a book in his hands. The family wishes to thank the staff on the P.A.T.H. and A.C.E. units for their excellent care. As per Bruce’s wishes, there will be no service.

Evelyn Annie Stickle passed away suddenly on May 31, 2015. Predeceased by her youngest daughter Angela Stickle, husband Byron Stickle, father and mother Bill and Annie Tyas, brothers Arthur and Billy Tyas and sister Noreen Yuill. She is survived by her loving family; daughter Pamela Plosz, son Gregory Gorsky, (Barbie), son Frazer Stickle, (Mary-Lou), sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and George Friezen, sister-in-law Doreen Tyas, granddaughter Ashley Gorsky, grandson Dylan Plosz, granddaughter Kelsey Gorsky, grandson Clint Gorsky, granddaughter Allison (Grace) Stickle, granddaughter Victoria Ross and several loved nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada and England. Evelyn was born in Mission, BC, she married and worked throughout Alberta and BC in her younger years and always shared memories about a few of the special locations such as Banff and Ocean Falls. In the early 60’s she made Vancouver her home and started a family. She remained in Vancouver and was a proud advocate of her beautiful City. Evelyn was a kind and compassionate person who enjoyed her large circle of friends; she had a love of music, fashion and politics. At the age of 74 until very recently she shared her life with her granddaughter Grace who was 9 years old after Angela passed away suddenly. Grace and her Nanny had a special bond and looked after each other for the past 6 years. The past two years Evelyn experienced some health issues; however with the assistance of her family, friends and special care givers she was feeling better, happy and appreciative of all the love she was receiving. Evelyn will be dearly missed and forever loved. A celebration of life will be held in Mission, BC. In lieu of flowers donations to the Canadian Liver Foundation would be appreciated; online information at liver.ca.

Flora Sept. 5, 1923 ~ May 31, 2015

Flora passed away peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Saviour at Elim Village in Surrey, BC May 31, 2015. Born in Liverpool, England, immigrated to Vancouver, BC in 1927 and late of Abbotsford, BC. Predeceased by her brother John Robertson in 1994 and husband Jack of 64 years in 2011. She is survived by her loving children; Sharon Russell, Daphne (Hans) Wolfs, David (Lenore) Howie, Carol Pollex, 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and brother Marcus Robertson. Flora loved her English garden, singing and playing piano and was given to hospitality. The family wishes to express our sincere thanks to the staff of Elim for their loving and compassionate care of our dear mother. “Til we meet on that beautiful shore”.

Sig passed away after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease holding the hand of Joan, his wife of 53 years. His family wants to thank the caring nurses at Chilliwack hospital who helped all of us through his last days. He is survived by his children, David of Storthoaks, SK; Karen (Bruce) of Abbotsford, Todd (Krystal), and Neil (Sophie) both of Winnipeg Beach, MB, five grandchildren, and his brother Cliff of Sandy Hook, MB. Sig was born in Selkirk, MB, moved to Abbotsford, BC in 1977 and retired to Chilliwack in 1998. No service at Sig’s request. He will be laid to rest in Gimli, MB between his mother and father. In lieu of flowers, donations to BC Parkinson Society in Sig’s name would be appreciated. Sig will always be loved and missed but wants his family to remember to miss him, but not too long, miss him but let him go.
