Churches toll bells for missing aboriginal women Anglican churches mark release of Truth and Reconciliation report Kendra Wong Victoria News
Bells at Anglican churches around Victoria will ring and echo through the downtown core to remember the more than 1,000 aboriginal women who have gone missing or murdered between 1980 and 2012. The Christ Church Cathedral and St. John the Divine
Anglican Church are participating in 22 days of prayer, marking the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report that addressed the troubled legacy of Indian Residential Schools in the country. Churches will toll their bells at 2 p.m. for one hour, or the time it takes to ring it 1,181 times – one ring for each of the aborigi-
nal women who have gone missing or murdered over a 32-year period. Rev. Alastair McCollum with the St. John the Divine Anglican Church, said the event will bring muchneeded attention to a sensitive topic. “It’s a sign of respect, respect for those women who have gone missing or have been murdered. It’s also a way of drawing attention to the on-going desire that we have as the church to build up our relationship with First Nations, friend-
ships that have obviously not been easy,” said McCollum. “There’s a lot that we are saying sorry for and we want healing to be a part of our relationship with First Nations.” The bells first rang on Wednesday and will ring again for an hour on June 10 and 17. “What we’re hoping to achieve as a participant in the ringing of the bells in memory of murdered and missing aboriginal women is to encourage the federal government to initiate an

inquiry into these individuals’ deaths and disappearances,” said Janet Davies, parish administrator with Christ Church Cathedral. The event comes in response to a landmark report that was released earlier this week from the federal Truth and Reconciliation Commission documenting the treatment of native children at residential schools in the 19th and 20th centuries. The 388-page report, headed by Justice Murray Sinclair called the treatment “cultural genocide.”
The report includes 94 recommendations such as launching a national inquiry to investigate the violence and its relationship to the “intergenerational legacy of residential schools,” and an annual report and action on the overrepresentation of aboriginal children in the child welfare system. More than 130 residential schools operated across Canada and an estimated 150,000 First Nation, Metis and Inuit students passed through the system. kendra.wong@vicnews.com

Victoria girl heads to North American braille competition
Eight-year-old Maggie Wehrle reads a braille book. Wehrle is the only student from Vancouver Island to compete in this year’s Braille Institute Challenge Finals in Los Angeles on June 20. Kendra Wong/Victoria News
Maggie Wehrle will compete at the Braille Institue Challenge finals in L.A. in June Kendra Wong
She has been blind almost since birth. But that hasn’t stopped her from challenging herself. In June, Maggie and her mother Melissa will travel to Los Angeles to compete in the Braille Institute Challenge finals for the first time. The North American challenge is similar to a spelling bee with spelling, proofreading, reading comprehension, speed and accuracy to see how well they understand braille. “I’m a bit nervous, but I’m excited,” said Maggie. “I think I’m just excited to travel.” Maggie beat out more than 1,000 preliminary round contestants from 39 states and four Canadian provinces to make the top 60 in only her second year of braille competition. But her mother isn’t surprised. “She’s a bit of whiz when it

Maggie Wehrle’s clothes are almost as vibrant and outgoing as her personality. Walking into the office, eightyear-old Maggie wears a navy blue sweater with flowers and other circular shapes on it, pink and purple-beaded earrings, sneakers with pink laces and a bright pink knapsack. Her eyes peep over the ridges of her glasses as she speaks. Maggie, a Grade 2 student at Margaret Jenkins Elementary School and Fairfield resident, was born with rod-cone dystrophy, a genetic eye problem caused by the degeneration of photoreceptor rod and cone cells. Cones and rods change light into electric nerve messages that transfer to the brain through the optic nerve.
comes to English vocabulary,” laughed Melissa. “It’s such a big opportunity . . . I am really proud of her, but not surprised. She’s quite smart.” Maggie, a self-professed book worm, has read numerous books — right now she’s switching between Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach. “Over the years, once you get the hang of it, you find it really fun,” said Maggie, adding she also enjoys playing the violin and folding origami. “She’s got a really big imagination,” said Melissa. “It’s a good stimulant for her. She’ll watch kids shows and stuff like that and she’ll follow by listening and cuing. But [reading is] something that she’ll really just take off with.” Maggie first discovered the
competition from her braille teacher Daphne Hitchcock. “She has a wonderful outlook on life, she loves learning and is very inquisitive,” said Hitchcock, who has worked with Maggie since kindergarten. “She has just flown with reading. She’s a hard worker and has really blossomed over the last year with her reading level and abilities.” Hitchock said they’ve been practicing reading comprehension and proofreading in preparation and although it is her first appearance at the competition, she believes Maggie will do well. Maggie’s mindset going into the competition is simple: “Just to try hard,” she said. “I really want to continue with it.” Maggie and Melissa will travel to Los Angeles to compete in the Braille Institute finals on June 20. kendra.wong@vicnews.com

New election for doctors A new election has been ordered for the presidency of Doctors of B.C. after a recount determined the first vote ended in a tie. Dr. Brian Day, a leading proponent of more private health care, had been declared the winner last week by a single vote. Officials at Doctors of B.C. (formerly the B.C. Medical Association) said the initial tally failed to count one vote for Day’s challenger Dr. Alan Ruddiman. The run-off vote between the two takes place from June 5 to 18.

Suicide prevention volunteer honoured Seven awards were given out to local volunteers at United Way’s YouthNow ceremony Kendra Wong Victoria News
A local volunteer is giving back to the community by shining a light on a topic that most people shy away from. Victoria resident Chelsea Clouthier is a volunteer with NEED2, a service that works to prevent suicide through anonymous chatting and texting services for youth. Clouthier is a suicide education and awareness presenter, responsible for going to high schools on Vancouver Island and speaking to students about suicide prevention. It is a topic that is close to Clouthier’s heart. “In elementary school, some of my first memories are people saying really mean things in the locker rooms. Then I switched schools and things got worse and worse, I was really isolated at the new school and I was getting bullied,” said Clouthier, who originally went to school in Saskatchewan. “All that just built up and it ended up with me being hospitalized for a few weeks after a suicide attempt.” After the attempt, her parents found counsellors and psychologists for her to speak to. “After I attempted suicide, it helped me realize there are people out there that care for me,” said Clouthier. “[My family] gave me something to continue living for.” Now, the 23-year-old, who moved to the Island to attend university, has spent hours telling students about the resources available to them, something she has done at least once a week since she started with NEED2 in September. “The thing I like about NEED2 is the presentation that we give;

We’re giving them the tools to see when their friends are struggling or when they’re struggling,” she said. Clouthier was recognized for her volunteer efforts at the 17th annual United Way Greater Victoria YouthNow awards last week
where she was awarded the individual volunteer award aged 20-29. It was Renata Hindle, manager of suicide education and awareness program with NEED2, who nominated Clouthier for the award. “Chelsea has a wonderful energy about her. She’s dedicated, she’s passionate about the work that we do. She’s committed in the sense of ensuring that
she’s a positive role model for students,” said Hindle. “She’s just a wonderful person.” According to Tara Taggart, with United Way, there were roughly 50 applicants for this particular award, but it was Clouthier’s work that resonated most with the council. “What resonated with the council was the type of volunteer work that Chelsea does,” said Taggart. “It can take a lot out of you on
an individual level and it’s such important work that they’re doing. A number of young people have been touched personally or know someone that has struggled with [suicide] so it resonated with almost everyone on the council.” This year’s winners also include Shaheen Rabie, Hannah Berry, Willow Mak, Kaitlyn Nohr, the Sierra Club and Youthspace. ca. Free-B outdoor film festival returns to Beacon Hill Park Film fest includes movies from the last seven decades The Free-B outdoor film festival returns to Beacon Hill park this summer with a French twist. This year’s Free-B line-up includes films that span seven decades. The fun, free festival runs on Friday and Saturday nights throughout August at the Cameron Bandshell in Beacon Hill Park,
except for two special screenings. The opening screening of the 1966 classic, Batman: The Movie, will take place 9 p.m. Aug. 7 at the B.C. legislature lawn. The final screening on August 29 will be the 1937 locally filmed and produced by Kenneth J. Bishop, Murder is News, held at Broadmead Village in Saanich. Unknown to many, Bishop was a big producer back in the 1930s and gave name to the “quota quickies” films that were produced quickly to hit the designated Canadian quota amount of films. “Bishop produced 14 films in five years
between 1932-1937, which is staggering by today’s standards. Most of the films are hard to find but luckily we secured Murder is News to share some Victorian film history,” said Donovoan Aikman, programmer at the Victoria Film Festival. A variety of family-friendly French short films (ranging three to 10 minutes in length) will be screened prior to the features. The new addition to the August line-up is thanks to partnering with the City of Victoria and the Francophone Affairs Program. “It’s a throwback to the old drive-in the-
atres – you bring the blankets, and snacks– and you get cozy while enjoying classics from your childhood. This is our 15th year and we’re excited to start the evening off with French shorts,” said festival director Kathy Kay. The 2015 Free-B line-up has a variety of films from the 1930s to the 1990s, including big blockblusters like The Mummy and Wild Wild West. To see the entire schedule, please go online to freebfilmfest.com. Free-B is run by the Victoria Film Festival. editor@vicnews.com

Surrey couple found guilty in bomb plot A Surrey couple has been found guilty of plotting to detonate bombs at the B.C. legislature on Canada Day 2013. The verdict by the B.C. Supreme Court jury in the case of John Nuttall and Amanda Korody came after three days of deliberation. The couple is guilty of one count each of conspiring to commit murder and possessing explosives for the benefit or on behalf of a terrorist organization. The jury began its deliberations on Sunday following a nearly four-month trial and three days of judge’s instructions that were more than 300 pages long. Nuttall and Korody were accused of conspiracy to commit murder, making or possessing an explosive device, and conspiracy to place an explosive device with the intent to cause death or injury. The couple had pleaded not guilty to the charges. Neither one of the accused testified in court. But the trial isn’t over yet. Nuttall and Korody’s lawyers
John Nuttall and Amanda Korody have been found guilty by a B.C. Supreme Court jury. will be back in court to argue the case that the pair were entrapped by police. The convictions won’t be entered until after the defence has a chance to argue that police entrapped the couple into the plot during a sting operation. The jury’s guilty verdicts can be stayed if the judge finds entrapment or other abuses of process. Arguments for entrapment will be heard by the judge in July.

B.C. adds $10 million to cut surgery wait times Jeff Nagel Black Press
Patients who have endured excessive waits for surgery may get into the operating room faster this summer. The province is injecting $10 million into the system to perform an extra 1,000 surgeries province-wide in an effort to reduce wait times. The extra money will be targeted for patients who have waited longer than 40 weeks for surgery, Health Minister Terry Lake said. Orthopedic surgeries, cataracts, hernias, plastic surgeries and ear, nose and throat procedures will be eligible for accelerated treatment. Lake said the money will open up extra operating room time in hospitals across the province, and in some cases it will be used to contract private clinics
to perform extra day surgeries. “Patients want to have their surgeries done,” Lake told reporters. “If the quality is there and if it reduces wait lists and it’s paid for and administered by the public system, I think British Columbians would agree with that approach.” Just one per cent of surgeries in B.C. were performed by private clinics using public funds in 2013. It’s not yet clear how much that might increase but Island Health said in April it’s seeking a private clinic operator to provide up to 4,000 day surgeries a year, or about 10 per cent of the region’s annual total. Further cash infusions for surgery increases are expected in the fall and early next year. Along with the promised short-term relief, the province is also
pursuing longer-range measures to make the surgical system more efficient. Many family doctors often refer to the same heavily booked surgeon due to reputation or preference, while other surgeons are sometimes idle. Lake said one alternative may be to instead shift to a pool of surgeons where patients get assigned to the first one available. Similarly, patients who face a long wait to get into their local hospital may be urged to instead get their surgery performed at another hospital an hour or so down the road where time is going unused. “For patients, it’s not as convenient perhaps,” Lake said. “But it is an opportunity to have their surgery done faster.” More recruitment and training of anaesthetists and surgical nurses is also part of the long-range plan. B.C. has increased the numbers of surger-

Lake pointed to soaring demand for procedures such as hip replacements over the last 15 years as patients realize what recent medical advancements now offer them. Each year there are more seniors who are typically living longer lives. “We know these surgeries are becoming the expectation for people who want to live a good quality of life and that is the demand we want to meet.” More than 50 of the
province’s nearly 300 operating rooms are not regularly staffed, according to a Health Ministry discussion paper on surgical reform. It said operating rooms are generally idle because health authorities have insufficient funds to run them, but in some cases they’re shuttered because of a lack of specialized staff such as anaesthestists or insufficient local demand. According to the provincial surgical wait time website, the typical patient is waiting 45 weeks for knee replacement surgery and up

Fraser Health engineered its own surgery surge earlier this year, reallocating a budget surplus to perform seven per cent more surgeries to reduce wait lists. It’s not yet known if Fraser will be charged financial penalties under the province’s pay-for-performance system for several hundred surgery waits that in late 2014 threatened to extend longer than a year.

The province has unveiled a new website designed to help teens in foster care prepare for life without government support when they turn 19 and “age out” of care. The site agedout.com was designed by former foster teens to connect with vulnerable youth and showcases services and supports to help make the transition. It includes videos of former youth in care discussing real world challenges and gaming “quests” where youth earn rewards by completing challenges like renting an apartment, getting a bank account, preparing for a job interview or dealing with an abusive relationship. “‘How do I get a job?’ ‘Where am I going to live?’ These are the types of questions we all faced when we became adults,” Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux said. “But for those in the care in the ministry, the transition can be much more challenging.”

Vitamin C and Lysine for Heart Health and More... W. GIFFORD-JONES, MD
Seventeen years ago following my own coronary attack, cardiologists claimed it was sheer madness for me to refuse cholesterol-lowering drugs (CLD’s). Instead, knowing the research on vitamin C and lysine, as well as the side-effects of CLD’s, I decided to take high doses of vitamin C plus lysine with breakfast and the evening meal.
Medi-C Plus™, with vitamin C and lysine, is available at health food stores and select natural pharmacies. The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop with breakfast and the evening meal.
I do not recommend that those taking CLDs should stop them. This is a decision that can only be made by patients and doctors. As for me – I bet my life on vitamin C and lysine and I’m glad I did! I turned 91 this year and still write a weekly column and travel across Canada speaking on the benefits of healthy living. To join me on the road go to: www.docgiff.com

OUR VIEW
Politicos hit road for votes One of the side effects of having fixed election dates in Canada, a move that was pioneered by the B.C. Liberals when they first were elected here in 2001, is that campaigns have become much, much longer. In fact, having a short campaign period is considered a disaster by most political handlers now. The federal election campaign has actually been underway for some time – certainly since the beginning of the year. While Parliament is still sitting and passing laws, MPs and candidates of all stripes are hard at work getting ready for the October election. Here in Victoria, candidates are mostly in place and several have already set up campaign offices. Because of the long campaign period, voters need to treat almost everything said or done by political parties, and particularly by their leaders, with a great deal of skepticism. NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair is a frequent visitor to local ridings. He has good reason to be a frequest visitor with two of the three current ridings represented by New Democrats. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau will almost certainly be in the area several times in the coming month, and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May will likely spend a lot of time defending her Saanich-Gulf Islands seat and trying to build on the strong interest in Green politics on the Island. Prime Minister Stephen Harper is likely to make an early visit to bolster the troops, too. Voters aren’t too engaged in federal politics right now, but the parties most certainly are.

chips, now spending his vast fortune on the Amazon basin, B.C. and other “threatened” places. Other Silicon Valley and Seattle billionaires helped finance the original effort, and a strategy document surfaced in 2008 describing their plan to de-market the Alberta oilsands by creating a blockade against energy exports on our Pacific coast. That campaign has featured a fake cancer study and grossly exaggerated greenhouse gas claims compared to U.S. coal and oil production. The effort has since expanded to natural gas, with false horror stories about “fracking” finding a receptive global audience. Last week I wrote about the plan by British manufacturing conglomerate Reckitt Benckiser to buy up farms in the B.C. Interior and replant them with trees. Contrary to my description, “RB Trees for Change” isn’t participating in the dodgy European carbon credit market. They’re just doing it for global marketing purposes, covering pioneer-cleared farms of our colonial backwater with forest for
100 years so they can advertise their soaps and cold pills as carbon neutral. Back to reality. B.C.’s Auditor General issued a report last week calling on the province to do more to prevent the “cumulative effects” of industrial development. A familiar example of this is the struggle to maintain caribou herds in northern B.C. The B.C. government mustered a response from the multiple ministries that have worked on this since 2010. Among other things, they noted 90 per cent of B.C.’s vast area is now covered by regional land use plans created to manage cumulative impacts. A whopping 37 per cent of B.C. is designated as parks and protected areas for environmental and cultural values. Maybe that’s still not good enough, but it’s better than anything I can find in Europe or the U.S. ••• Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press newspapers. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Dana McKellar has been missing since September 2014.
The Victoria Police Department is conducting what is being called one of the most extensive and detailed searches on Vancouver Island in an effort to find clues of a missing Victoria man. Dana McKellar, 51, was reported missing in September 2014. On Tuesday, VicPD and the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit launched an extensive search of a rural Saanich property in the 100block of Goward Road in the Prospect Lake neighbourhood to find evidence in search of McKellar. Through an investigation, it was
revealed that McKellar had been previously assaulted in July. So far, police have uncovered barrels of unlabelled content and several bones, that they said are not human remains. Officers are expected to be on the scene until early next week. Police also searched a property in the 1200-block of Burnside Road West earlier this year which led them to the current property. Anyone with information is asked to call the VicPD on the non-emergency line at 250-995-7654 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

There’s 470L with the rear seats up and 1,492L with the seats folded down. And those rear seats fold flat. Flat as in flat as a pancake. An added bonus is that the bumper/trunk isn’t particularly high off the ground. So if you have trouble lifting larger or heavier items up, this will be a welcome perk. Though my road bicycle isn’t particularly heavy, it is awkward. But when placing it inside the Fit, its wide trunk opening, low seats and fold flat features got a 10/10 in my books.

I’m not saying there is anything fundamentally wrong with this setup. It’s just not my first choice. That said, it’s not a deal breaker. Bluetooth comes standard on all models; so do power windows. And of course, the aforementioned Magic Seats, which allow you to configure the cabin in ways that will astonish you. On the road, the Fit also shines. A roomy cabin, combined with enhanced NVH properties so road noises are kept at bay make for a serene environment. Its electric power-assisted rack and pinion steering (EPS) move the Fit in and out of tight spots with ease and little effort. Though at highway speeds, you still feel connected to the car. Its charm extends much further than its practical characteristics. The Fit is a joy to drive and has flair in the looks department. Overall, the Fit fits well with me and I’m very happy about that. Ford is opening its portfolio of electrified vehicle technology patents to competitive automakers to accelerate industry-wide research and development of electrified vehicles. In 2014, Ford filed for 400-plus electrified vehicle patents – more than 20 percent of the total patents the company applied for last year “Innovation is our goal,” said Kevin Layden, director, Ford Electrification Programs. “The way to provide the best technology is through constant development and progress. By sharing our research with other companies, we will accelerate the growth of electrified vehicle technology and deliver even better products to customers.” Ford Motor Company
currently offers six hybrid or fully electrified vehicles including Ford Focus Electric, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, Ford C-MAX Hybrid, Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. In total, Ford has more than 650 electrified vehicle patents and approximately 1,000 pending patent applications on electrified vehicle technologies.
Ford believes sharing its patented technologies will promote faster development of future inventions as all automakers look toward greater opportunities. “As an industry, we need to collaborate while we continue to challenge each other,” said Layden. “By sharing ideas, companies can solve bigger challenges and help improve the
industry.” As part of Ford’s increased focus on new and innovative technologies, the automaker is set to hire an additional 200 electrified vehicle engineers this year as the team moves into a newly dedicated facility – Ford Engineering Laboratories – home to Henry Ford’s first labs in Dearborn. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.

Canstruction produces 30,000 cans of food for Mustard Seed Kendra Wong Victoria News
After setting up spectacular canned displays of Disney-themed structures, more than 30,000 cans of food will be donated to the largest food bank on Vancouver Island. As part of the second annual Canstruction event put on by the Dahlia Society at Mayfair Mall last month, seven companies used thousands of cans to build famous Disney structures including R2D2, the Disney Castle and a drive-in movie theatre. All of the food used to build the
structures was then donated to the Mustard Seed to help the group during the time of year when donations are at a low. “When we start to get into the summer months like we are now, traditionally, we see a dip in donations but there’s still an increase in families and the need for volumes of food,” said Colin Tessier, executive director with Mustard Seed. “This injection of food, 30,000 cans, is coming right at the perfect time to help us get through difficult summer months.” Tessier expects the cans will last them until September. Jock Macdonald’s work is Victoria art gallery’s biggest exhibit of the year Paintings of iconic Canadian painter on display at AGGV from June 13 to Sept. 7 He was a pioneer of abstract painting in Canada and an exceptional teacher. He influenced generations of artists. His stunning landscapes are national treasures. And for the first time in 30 years, a major retrospective of Jock Macdonald’s work is being presented. Jock Macdonald: Evolving Form is an in-depth exhibition of the life and work of one of Canada’s finest artists. With just three stops on its tour, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria will present this special exhibition, opening June 13 and running until Sept. 7. Evolving Form tells the story of a naturally curious artist who explored the world through art. It provides a fresh look at Macdonald’s artistic practice and exhibits many previously unknown works for the first time. The exhibition traces the unique and dramatic transformations of Macdonald’s artistic development, beginning with his landscape paintings and his evolution toward automatic painting (or painting from the unconscious), surrealism and abstraction while tracing his life events and many influences through excerpts from Macdonald’s correspondence, sketches, and a diary he kept while living in Nootka Sound, Vancouver Island, from 1935 to 1936.

“Visitors will see the progression of Macdonald’s work, the transitions in his life and career, the influence of spirituality, and his impact on the cities where he lived and taught,” said AGGV’s chief curator Michelle Jacques, who curated and organized the exhibition along with curators from the Vancouver Art Gallery and The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa. “The exhibition includes a number of Macdonald’s stunning landscapes of Nootka Sound, which are at once evocative of the Group of Seven and indicative of the emergence of Macdonald’s unique artistic vision.” Macdonald was a supporter of other artists, including those he taught, and those he admired, such as Emily Carr – Macdonald used the little money he had to buy one of her small pieces. Jacques extensively studied Macdonald’s life and paintings as she curated the exhibition, and coauthored an accompanying book, teaching materials and website. “He was an ever-evolving artist who explored new styles and mediums,” said Jacques. “Particularly fascinating is that he didn’t start painting until his adult life, and because he tragically died quite young, at the height of his career in 1960, he only painted for 30 years. Because he taught throughout his career in several cities across Canada, he had quite the impact on 20th century Canadian art.” For more information, please call the art gallery at 250-384-4171 or go online to aggv.ca.

HarbourCats begin 2015 season tonight The Victoria HarbourCats open their West Coast League tonight (June 5) with a threegame weekend baseball set against the Kelowna Falcons. The Accent Inns Trophy is up for grabs with the provincial-rival Falcons. Winner of the series will get the trophy -- the first time it will be awarded for the season

So far, more than 3,300 tickets have been sold for tonight’s game. Tickets are still available for all games. Along with the regular basbeall festivities, firweworks are planned for tonight’s game and Saturday. Game time for tonight and Saturday is 6:35 p.m. Sunday’s game begins at 1:05 p.m.
Top cyclists will compete in Victoria grand prix event Races for all levels will speed around legislature Elite cyclists are expected to put on a show at the Russ Hay’s/ Accent Inns Grand Prix in downtown Victoria Sunday (June 7). Cyclists will race around the B.C. legislature. The route is similar to a onekilometre course around the legislature that was previously used in the late 1980s. With the start/finish located on Belleville Street, the racers will turn south on Government Street, followed by turning west on Superior. The back stretch will see the racers head north on Menzies and turn east back to Belleville Street. “We have always wanted to raise the bar with respect to creating a better spectator experience for our event. We also feel the venue change will help to showcase Victoria as a great cycling tourism destination,” said race director Jon Watkin.
“But what isn’t changing is the calibre of the competition – Canada’s top cyclists will be showcased throughout the weekend – and the opportunities for cyclists of all ages and abilities through various events.” The grounds of the B.C. legislature will also include new family friendly activities. “Having access to the B.C. legislature grass area allows us to expand our children and family activities and to create a more lively atmosphere that celebrates cycling for all ages and abilities,” Watkin said. The ever-popular Tim Horton’s Timbits Challenge will continue on the new circuit and is expected to attract more than 150 kids ages 3 to 10. “You can’t help but smile when watching this event. The kids have a blast,” said Timbits Challenge coordinator Sandy McClary. “Everyone gets a medal, T-shirt, water bottle, and a pack of Timbits – and the registration is free.”

Not hearing clearly when many people are talking? Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, System Audéo V has been designed specifically to understand in group situations.
The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in company, or in the restaurant. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that are decisive when it comes to hearing things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory center of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.
Hearing sensation! Swiss researchers: Audéo V is superior for conversation.
Without Audéo V
With Audéo V
The New Audeo V hearing aids provide considerable reduction in noise allowing you to focus on speech.
New hearing chip developed Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing aid chip that is designed to improve speech comprehension in noise, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to
is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation. Interested people can register for a no-obligation demonstration of the Audéo V by calling 888.408.7377

VITC to be held on Wednesday at UVIC A stellar field is lining up for next week’s Victoria International Track Classic. Many top-level Canadian and international athletes will seek to qualify for the Toronto Pan American Games as well as the Beijing IAAF World Track and Field Championships and the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. This week Victoria International Track Classic officials announced two-time Olympian and University of Idaho Vandals alumni Angela Whyte will be headlining the women’s 100-metre hurdles. The Edmonton native has medaled at both the Commonwealth and Pan American Games and will be looking to achieve a qualifying standard to set her up for heading to the World Championships in Beijing, Pan Ameri-
can Games and the Rio Olympic Games. Joining Whyte will be fellow Canadian Olympians Phylicia George and Nikkita Holder. George, after a sixth place finish in the 2012 London Olympic Games and coming off major injury in 2013, returned in 2014 to full form. She holds this season’s top ranked time at 12:94 and has achieved her Olympic standard which is set at 13:00. Holder, after finishing 16th at the 2012 Summer Games, is looking for a big comeback. The Victoria International Track Classic is held annually and is an internationally recognized athletics event that provides an opportunity for Canada’s elite athletes to compete against the best in the world, on their home turf. The VITC will be held Wednesday (June 10), at the University of Victoria’s Centennial Stadium, beginning at 7 p.m. For tickets, please go online to ticketrocket. com.

Dinner an all white, secret affair It will be a white-out in June. More than 2,000 people are expected to take part in Le Dîner en Blanc on June 25. The annual “Dinner in White” will be held in a secret location. “Diner en Blanc combines a beautiful outdoor venue, such as St. Ann’s Academy or Fisherman’s Wharf Park – Victoria’s previous event locations – with the sophistication of a gourmet picnic,” said Tyson Villeneuve, owner of the Social Concierge, the event management company tasked with organizing the Victoria event. Le Dîner en Blanc is an evening event where guests arrive – dressed head-to-toe in white – to various spots throughout the city and then travel on foot and by coach guided by volunteers to a secret location for an evening of fine food, wine and entertainment. Guests bring their own table, chairs, table setting and gourmet picnic. Those who may not have the time to pack their own gourmet picnic can once again count on Dan Hayes, The London Chef, who will provide three catered food options. Those interested in the event may register online at victoria.dinerenblanc.info/register, with the first round of ticket sales beginning this week. Tickets are $74 per couple. editor@vicnews.com

MARKET TREND | Number of properties sold in Victoria increased significantly in May
May shows upward trend in housing market The real estate market is having a positive impact on other sectors as well Kendra Wong Victoria News
A perfect storm of low interest rates, consumer confidence and a strong local economy have contributed to the strongest May real estate market in eight years and expect it to continue, says the Victoria Real Estate Board. According to numbers released by the real estate board, a total of 905 properties were sold in the Victoria Real Estate Board region this May, a nearly 27 per cent increase compared to the 714 properties sold in the same month last year. There were also 4,043 active listings for sale at the end of May, 13.5 per cent fewer than the 4,672 active listings in May 2014. “An increase like this can never be just one thing, it’s a perfect storm,” said Guy Crozier, president of the real estate board. “If you have all these great things — you have a great climate, you have a good economy, you’ve got low interest rates and consumer confidence, that’s what fuels a market to jump up like it has right now.” This was also the most properties sold since May 2007, when more than 960 properties were sold in the month. Crozier noted that there may have been a pent up demand since sales have been somewhat flat over the last five years. “It’s across the board. We’re seeing sales in all areas and we’re seeing sales from all different types of buyers, whether they be first-time home buyers, that’s what shows the strength of the market,” he added. Other sectors are also benefiting from a strong real estate market. According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the number of houses being built in the Victoria area also rose by 33 per cent. In April 2015, there were 268 starts, compared to the 60 starts in April of last year, with both single-detached and multiple-family home starts moving higher. Seventy per cent of starts took place in the City of Victoria. Ron Bickford, president of Rob-Ron Devel-

The Victoria Real Estate Board believes the market will continue to move in an upward trend for the remainder of the year, which is a good thing for home buyers. opments Ltd., and a board member with the Canadian Home Builders’ Association Vancouver Island, said the increased number of homes being built is reflective of the industry’s recovery from the housing recession in 2008. “This is kind of a point in the market where I believe we’re seeing a turn around,” he said, noting that their members have been busy booking new jobs over the past few months. “I am starting to feel some confidence that we’ve come through that downturn cycle and it looks to me like we’re about to swing in the opposite direction and sales are beginning to show and I think it’s going to continue to improve.”
Crozier believes the strong housing market is a trend that he can only see going up in the coming months, which is a good thing for prospective home owners. “I can’t see any factors out there that would stop this. I think we’re going to see this strong trend throughout the rest of the year,” said Crozier. “If the public is worried about the market changing, it’s a great time to call their realtor or one of our members and have a chat with them about market conditions and find out how to best form a strategy to move into a new place or sell their home.” kendra.wong@vicnews.com

‘‘
’’
