COs investigating dumped bear carcass Carcass likely left by hunters, COs say TRE VOR CR AWLEY
Local conservation officers are investigating after a bear carcass was dumped at a trailhead by the Cranbrook Community Forest earlier this week. The remains, which included the hide and ribcage, were left in plain sight at a parking lot just off Baker Mountain Road sometime during the night of June 1 or early the following morning. Jeffrey Scott, a conservation officer based in Cranbrook, said the office had received a few calls about the remains. He added the bear appeared to have been harvested legally—there was no meat that the suspects had left—but noted that disposing the carcass in such a public setting was
incredibly disrespectful. “What is the despicable and disrespectful thing is that it was deposited right at the trail head; people who wanted to use the trail would have to step over this carcass,” Scott said. “So sadly, some disrespectful hunter decided to deposit their waste material from a hunt in a completely inappropriate location for all the public to see, which is pretty sad.” The bear was not killed at the site, just the remains dumped, Scott clarified. “Somebody would’ve backed up [in a truck] and dumped it there. There were no drag marks,” he said. It’s not the first time that a carcass has been dumped in a public location such as the Community Forest. “It creates a horrible name for the hunting community, it portrays a pretty poor image for local hunters,” he said.
Officials predict lower water levels at Koocanusa TRE VOR CR AWLEY
The water levels out at Lake Koocanusa are expected to be lower over the course of the summer, but there shouldn’t be too much of an impact for recreational users, according to officials from BC Hydro and the US Army Corps of Engineers. The conditions have been blamed on an average snowpack and precipitation that was more rain that snow. “There’s pretty good snowpack—and when I

say pretty good—I’m talking 80-90 per cent of average in the upper part of the Kootenay Basin, but once you get down into Cranbrook and into the States, there’s virtually no snow,” said Joel Fenolio, the Upper Columbia Senior Water Manager with the U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers. “….It was a wet winter, it was about 115 per cent of average as far as precipitation but it all basically ran off and into Libby.”
Prior to the rain over the last few days, Fenolio noted that the water level forecast have been dropping and that the reservoir will likely be roughly 15 to 20 feet from full in August. At full flow, the lake level is at elevation 2,459 feet. According to Fenolio, this year has been the driest year since 2009-2010, in terms of maximum elevations at the Libby Dam. See WATER, Page 4

These booths are becoming more and more amazing all the time.” The Sunday in the Park event will be even bigger than last year with music going from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. There will also be plenty of mascots there. The moustache competition is also happening on Sunday. Last year there were 38 entrants. Frank noted the directors on the board are amazing people. Some of them are retired, but most have a job as well. “They are so focused and so dedicated. They do a great job to bring exposure to our city in organizing this festival for the city.” She also noted one of the goals is to keep the bulk of the events free for families. “The only way we can do that is throughout the continued support of the community, and we thank everybody for that,” Frank said. “It’s been really good.”

With the festivities of Sam Steele Days only a couple weeks away, organizers are gearing up for another great event this year. Sam Steele Days runs from June 18 - 21. Maureen Frank, co-coordinator/volunteer with the Sam Steele Society, said the this year’s event is shaping up to be a great one. “It’s going to absolutely amazing for this year,” Frank said. “Last year, for the 50th we knew it would be great. And because of the success of last year, there are other people now who heard about the event and are coming up to us and wanting to support us.” Some of the society’s board members are retiring — a number of them after 30 years of volunteering on the board. “Karin Penner has been there since the beginning — she’s been there for 51 years,” Frank noted. Frank also said there are some young members of the board as well. “We are really interested in finding people

and of course myself doing the admin part of it.” As for the festival itself, all the popular events are coming back. That includes the Strongman, wiener dog races, go-cart rides and logger sports demonstrations. “They are all back
because the crowds keep coming,” she said. The arm wrestling competition at the Byng is also now being sanctioned by the Sam Steele Days event. The central fair grounds will have five inflatables for kids to bounce to their hearts content.
“We also have free carnival games, free entertainment,” she said. “Our market has really taken off this year, we’ll have a market on both Saturday and Sunday.” The market is not limited to arts and crafts this year, and will include small home businesses as well.

Kimberley Public Library; accessible and welcoming C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
According to Kimberley Public Library Director Karin von Wittgenstein, something she often hears is, “I had no idea the Library offered that.” That’s something she’d like to change. The Library is so much more than a place to borrow books, although that remains its primary function. But it also offers a variety of services, and a vast spectrum of resources from ebooks and magazines to reading clubs. “And we don’t shush anymore,” von Wittgenstein said. The Kimberley Public Library Board and their supporters the Friends of the Library have worked hard to make the library an accessible, welcoming place, with all kinds of comfortable spaces to read or discuss. There is a youth room with study carrels and an entertainment centre. The room has plenty of young adult resources; fiction, relevant nonfiction, audio books, DVDs and excellent classroom resources. There’s a children’s room, a reading room with newspapers, and the opportunity to access a huge library of data bases. For everything from starting your own business and developing a business plan to academic periodicals to BC and Canadian law to auto repair, these data bases are valuable tools and yours to access free of charge. The Summer Reading Club runs from July to mid-August and will feature the theme Build It this year. The Writer in Residence Program with author Jordan Zinovich offers local authors an opportunity to gain assistance in writing, editing, publishing and promotion. Of course the always popular Children’s storytime continues, September
through June. “This program gives youngsters the opportunity to participate in a cooperative, group centred learning environment which ais in a more successful integration into the public education learning environment,” von Wittgentstein said. One of the other programs von Wittgenstein would like to emphasize is the Library’s outreach service. If you are, or know of, someone who is a shut-in, please contact or refer them to the Library and books can be brought right to their home. “I think that service is under-utilized,” she said. “A lot of people could benefit from it.” If you are a community group with an idea, contact the library to see if they might be interested in working with you. “We are always exploring opportunities for collaboration with community groups for creative additions to library services,” von Wittgenstein said. “We have been working with the Kimberley Makerspace group and look forward to having mini maker workshops at the library which will be part of the summer reading program.” While there are few government services in Kimberley, the Library is pleased to be able to offer employment services one day a week. At any other time, library staff are pleased to assist you in copying resumes and other support services. This is by no means a full list of everything that the Kimberley Public Library offers, but if you have a question just drop by. Von Wittgenstein and her staff would be happy to answer it for you or get you started on finding the resources you need. “We are so happy to be part of this community,” she said.

The following is a follow-up on the Rich Man Poor Man Dinner, a fundraiser for Nepal and Cailyn Strachan’s trip to India. The night was fantastic, says mom Catherine Strachan. The unique dining experience turned out to be just that. Each table represented a rural village in an under developed country. One person was randomly selected to get ice water served to them all night. The other nine represented the 90% of
the people living in a rural community. These people had to identify the youngest female at the table to do the Water Walk. The tables were given empty glasses and a jug. The water was down the hall, down the stairs and outside in the baseball field. Each table had one person randomly selected to receive a three course fine dining meal served to them. depending on what our flows are.” In terms of the water flows on sturgeon recovery in the Kootenay River, there isn’t going to be enough water supply to do two peak flows to help the spawning fish move further upstream. Jason Flory a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service who is working on white sturgeon recovery efforts, noted that a double peak—which they’ve done for the past two years—helps get the fish upstream, which helps with spawning. The population of hatchery-raised sturgeon—with 15,00030,000 released into the river system at under two years old—seem to be thriving, but the fish are having trouble reproducing in the wild. “They still spawn but they’re not producing any juveniles,” Flory said. “They’re spawning in an area that’s covered in sand and silt. So the eggs get fertilized, they drop down there, get buried and they die. “So half the approach is to put rocks there so they don’t get covered, then the other half of the approach is for them to migrate upstream to Bonner’s Ferry where there’s no sand and silt, it’s all rocky at the bottom.”

McKim Memories For the Bulletin
Hi! We just got back (huff!) from our track and field meet (puff ) and now for our weekly stories (stuff). So let’s start with our track and field meet. Competitors participated in numerous events that included running events, jumping events and throwing events. The top 3 in each event from each grade will move on to compete in
the district track and field championships in Invermere on June 11th. A great time was enjoyed by all. Some of our staff and students travelled up to The Greenhouse. Students learned how to transplant various vegetables. There will be more veggies in the world thanks to these students. If you don’t like veggies, take it up with them. They also got to pull weeds, hold
toads and play with manure. Fun????? This week was the year end Ping Pong singles tournament. Congratulations to Keagan Pretty on his victory, losing only one game in the entire tourney. Our year is quickly coming to a close (sad, isn’t it?). Next week’s stories will focus on some pretty remarkable clubs here. McKim, out!

Students at Kimberley Independent School “dug in” as part of Wildsight’s EcoStewards program. The kids had an amazing morning learning all about worms from the ‘worm lady,’ getting their hands into the worm compost and investigating the worm life cycle. They then spent the afternoon creating ways to share what they learned with others. One class made drawings of cartoon fruits, veggies and worms to add to the school’s “Work Compost Board,” while another class wrote down general worm composting facts to add to the board.

We will continue our commitment to financial support for community-controlled initiatives in healing, language and cultural revitalization, education and relationship-building, and self– determination. My hope and prayer is that we can begin to foster some of these actions here in Cranbrook. This is a Canadian issue. This is an issue for Cranbrook. In the closing words of the prayer “Remembering the Children” written in 2008 as the TRC began its work, “Great Creator God who desires that all creation live in harmony and peace, Remembering the Children we dare to dream of a Path of Reconciliation where apology from the heart leads to healing of the heart and the chance of restoring the circle, where justice walks with all, where respect leads to true partnership, where the power to change comes from each heart. Hear our prayer of hope, and guide this country of Canada on a new and different path. May it be so. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Hugh James Brock: The Driver of the Train JANUS:
Then & Now
Jim Cameron
On
the morning of Tuesday, August 23, 1898, with a hint of autumn in the air and the dust — there was a lot of dust — laid low by the heavy rains of the previous Sunday, the people of Cranbrook looked out of their newly-built houses and stores, their lumber mills and hotels, their shops and stables and saw smoke from the Canadian Pacific Railway track-layer rising into the sky at the northern end of Joseph’s Prairie. Slowly, relentlessly, the great iron horse crept closer as the workers laid length after length of glittering steel. At last, remarked the Cranbrook Herald, “When the sun finally dipped behind the timber covered hills to the southwest, the dying rays were reflected back from the steel rails that carried the first train into Cranbrook … a guarantee that the pack horse and freight wagon would soon be relics of the past. And how rapidly the grand transformation was wrought! At sunrise, an open prairie and a grade. At sunset, a main track, several side tracks, trains of freight loaded to their full capacity … a telegraph office a short distance away.” It may not have been the cavalry riding over the hill but it was close. It was the future of the city of Cranbrook made real by steel and when the locomotive ground to a halt and the men of the train stepped down they became the heroes of the new town. There were five men on that train that day: conductor A. Lockhart, engineer Hugh Brock, fireman Neil Campbell and brakemen Joe Belanger and Alfred
Genest. Though they all shared the responsibility along with the track gangs and engineers, the shakers and the hammer men, all those it takes to build a railway, it was engineer Hugh James Brock who, to the people of Cranbrook, truly represented the coming of the steel. No doubt to his way of thinking it was an honour uncalled for. He was a working man simply doing his job, but for over six decades his name was synonymous with that glorious day: Hugh Brock, the man who drove the first train into Cranbrook. Born March 26, 1872, in Rouge, Quebec, it’s a wonder that Hugh ever survived the first few years of his Cranbrook sojourn. He must have carried some of his Irish mother’s luck, one way or another. In November, 1900, the westbound freight he was driving hit a rock slide near Creston and slid off a 40-foot embankment. Most of the crew, including Hugh, managed to jump before the collision. They all sustained injuries, Hugh suffering a laceration to his scalp requiring 17 stitches, a sprained knee and
Hugh Brock, 1948. countless bruises. Three months later, while driving down a grade from Fernie, the brakes failed. As the train began careening out of control through a series of reverse curves the crew bailed out once again. Adding salt to the wounds the train stayed on the tracks, coming to a halt at the foot of the grade. This time Hugh was so badly knocked about that he required a stay in the St. Eugene Hospital but he was

The Brock residence on the corner of Hanson Avenue and Kains Street shortly after construction. It stood on the southern edge of the city. – Herald 1911.
The Brock residence today. – Cameron, Nov. 2015 back on the line one month later. In June, 1901, Hugh once more managed to escape with his life when his train was thrown from the tracks while leaving the west end of the Cranbrook rail yard. Someone — it was never discovered who, despite the $1,000 reward — maliciously turned a switch causing the train to derail. The engine landed on its side below the grade, trapping Hugh in the crushed cab. He managed to break a window with his fist in order to gain some air but there seemed to be little hope as the escaping steam slowly began to suffocate him. By a stroke of luck the remainder of the train, still moving, slowly piled up behind the overturned cab shifting the locomotive once more and allowing Hugh to scramble to safety. He was the only one injured, yet again with multiple bruises and a hospital stay. When a telegram from his family back east arrived asking if Hugh was killed in the
accident he playfully replied that he was “alive and well and worth a dozen dead men.” When, a few months later, he returned unharmed from an extended rail vacation back east the entire town let out a collective sigh of relief. Following a period of years driving trains in Alberta, Hugh once again returned to Cranbrook, this time in the company of his new bride Alice Beggs. Contractors Christian and Jones began construction on his new house on the corner of 8th Avenue and 3rd Street in 1910, and upon their return the newlyweds took up residence in the home Hugh would live in for the rest of his life. Alice died from anemia in 1923 and Hugh married Margaret Chadwick two years later. Together they had two daughters, Olive and Grace. After 46 years with the railway Hugh retired in 1937, listed first on the seniority list of B.C. engineers, a notable achievement. He was the last surviving member of the first
train crew into Cranbrook, dying at 91 years of age in 1963. His wife Margaret passed on in 1986. And as for history; if one is to research a man such as Hugh Brock, one might consult memoirs and read newspaper accounts, search through archives and scour the digital hemisphere for information or, believe it or not, one might simply pick up the phone and call his daughter. Grace Brock married Norman Gill of Kimberley and, following a long and fulfilling career as a school teacher in Fernie, Michel and Sparwood, now resides in Cranbrook. She is a well-spoken, refined lady and is pleased to speak of her family, then and now, recalling memories of her father, a down-to-earth, hard-working family man, a railroad man, the man who drove the first train into Cranbrook and, like so many pioneers, stayed for the rest of his life to make it a better place. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

Coach’s challenge closer to appearing in NHL C ANADIAN PRESS
NEW YORK - A coach’s challenge system is one step closer to being a reality in the NHL. The joint NHL/NHL Players’ Association competition committee on Thursday recommended coach’s challenges for goals involving goaltender interference and offside plays.
If approved by the NHLPA executive board and NHL board of governors, goaltender interference challenges would be handled by referees at ice level. Offside reviews would be handled by on-ice officials with consultation from the situation room in Toronto. A coach must have his timeout in order to
challenge. One of the original ideas was to make pucks shot over the glass subject to a coach’s challenge, but that did not get through the competition committee. Six weeks after general managers finally agreed on some aspect of three-on-three overtime to reduce shootouts, the competi-
tion committee failed to reach a consensus on what to do. The league and players will continue to discuss the issue in the coming weeks. GMs were split on the American Hockey League’s format of fouron-four for the first three minutes of overtime and then three-on-three from the next whistle up to seven minutes and
just doing three-onthree for all five minutes. The competition committee, which included four players, one owner and four GMs, could not agree, either. In an effort to generate more offence, the competition committee approved the general managers’ recommendation to make the defensive player put his
stick down first, instead of the visiting player. Faceoffs at centre ice will remain the same, requiring that the visiting team player put his stick down first. On the committee, co-chaired by the NHL’s Colin Campbell and NHLPA’s Mathieu Schneider, were Michael Cammalleri and Cory Schneider of the
New Jersey Devils, Kevin Shattenkirk of the St. Louis Blues, Daniel Winnik of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers owner Ed Snider, and general managers David Poile of the Nashville Predators, Ken Holland of the Detroit Red Wings, Don Maloney of the Arizona Coyotes and Peter Chiarelli of the Edmonton Oilers.
Canadian LPGA star adjusting to growing popularity Bill Doucet Canadian Press
CAMBRIDGE, Ont. Brooke Henderson felt her growing popularity during the first round of the Manulife LPGA Classic. Chants of “Go Canada Go!” and cheers every time she dropped a putt followed her around the course on Thursday at Whistle Bear Golf Club. But the Smiths Falls, Ont., native felt she didn’t give the pro-Canadian crowd
much to cheer about in her first round by shooting 1-under par 71 for tie for 86th place. “It was different. The crowd was more in my favour which was amazing and such an awesome experience,” said Henderson, who is not a full-time LPGA member due to age requirements. She was given a sponsor’s exemption for the tournament. “I’m hoping that the next couple days I’ll play well
enough so that the crowd’s not just there to see me play but to see me play really well.” Henderson was disappointed that she wasn’t able to make all of her shots, but still put a positive spin on the day’s performance. “It was a bit of up and down all day,” said Henderson. “I didn’t have the day I had hoped for. It was a little but rough, (missing) just a couple short putts early that
sort of slowed my momentum down, but it could have been really good. Those couple of putts go in and I have three or four more birdies on the round and that can change a round significantly because you can build and make more birdies.” It’s been a hectic start of the week leading up to Henderson’s opening round, as she’s had photo shoots and several media requests. While
it’s unusual for her, she said that didn’t affect her performance. “Definitely there is a lot of support and there was a lot more attention than I’m used to on a regular LPGA Tour event, but I enjoyed it and I try to see it as a fun experience and fun opportunity to learn what it’s like,” she said. “Stacy (Lewis) and Lydia Ko and Brittany Lincicome, they get that every week, so I’m hoping I’ll be like
Hideki Matsuyama shares lead at Muirfield Village Doug Ferguson Associated Press
DUBLIN, Ohio Hideki Matsuyama was bracing for a rough day at the Memorial and wound up with a share of the lead Thursday. Tiger Woods still doesn’t know what to expect. Matsuyama made a bold start in his bid to join Woods as the only repeat winners at Muirfield Village by running off four straight birdies on the back nine and one strong par save on his way to an 8-under 64 that tied the Japanese star with Bo Van Pelt. “To be honest with you, up until yesterday I was not hitting the ball very well, I was not chipping very well, I was not putting very well,” Matsuyama said through a translator. “And I don’t know what happened overnight. We just caught magic.” It was a dream start
for Van Pelt for other reasons. He grew up across the state line in Indiana and used to play hooky from school to attend the Memorial from the time he was 10 until he got out of high school. Muirfield Village is where he first dreamed about playing the PGA Tour. In calm conditions under an overcast sky, Van Pelt made a career-best 10 birdies for his best score in 41 rounds at the course Jack Nicklaus built. “Other than the Masters, this tournament means more to me than any one I’ve ever played,” Van Pelt said. “So it’s always good to play well around a place that means a lot to you.” Woods, a five-time winner of the Memorial, wasn’t sure what he was going to get. He hooked his tee shot and started with a bogey for the eighth time in his last nine starts on the PGA
Tour. He went so far right off the tee at the 18th that it went out-of-bounds (the next tee shot wasn’t much better) and made double bogey to go out in 40. He hooked his 3-wood on the first hole. It was looking like another big number. Instead, Woods battled to save pars and convert birdies, and he salvaged a 73 that left him nine shots behind. “Physically, I feel good. Mentally, I feel beat up,” Woods said. “To turn that round around like I did today ... that was hard.” He was determined to stick with the changes he is making to his swing under a fourth coach as a pro, no matter how long it takes. Considering he hasn’t had a top 10 in his last 13 events dating to the end of 2013, this could take time. “I was just trying to stay committed to what we’re working on, to
what we’re doing,” he said. “I hit it awful, yeah. So what? I was going to go through this phase and stick with it, keep sticking with it. And some of the shots I hit were really, really good. But then I also had some really bad shots, too. And we need to work on that.” Matsuyama won the Memorial last year in a playoff. It was his first win in America and validated him as one of the many rising stars in golf. He said every course on the PGA Tour feels difficult to him, and even when he made a pair of 15-foot birdie putts on his way to a 32 on the front nine while playing with Phil Mickelson (72) and Rickie Fowler (72), he wasn’t comfortable. “I was just trying to hang on,” he said. So was Jason Dufner, the former PGA champion, whose tied for eighth last week at the AT&T Byron Nelson ended a
stretch of 17 events on American soil without a top 10. He was tied for the lead after making a 60-foot eagle putt on the 15th hole and was still poised to join Matsuyama and Van Pelt at 64 until he pulled his tee shot into the water on the 18th and closed with a double bogey. That put him at 66, along with Russell Knox, who fed his putts off the ridges beautifully in making seven birdies. Harris English and Kevin Kisner were among those at 67. Masters champion Jordan Spieth, who saved the start of his round with a world-class short game, was cruising along until one mistake turned a birdie into a bogey on the par-5 seventh late in his round. He had to settle for a 68.

them in the future and it’s a learning experience. I think I did a good job in my preparation, I just wasn’t 100 per cent today. “One-under, I’ll take it if it’s my worst day.” Henderson, who admits that she is usually aggressive on the golf course, said she held back at certain points when she probably she have just played her usual style. “The wind wasn’t
quite as strong and I think it influenced a couple shot today and a couple lines where I was thinking the wind would be stronger and it was a lot lighter. So I think I could have taken it a little more aggressive on a couple tee shots and a couple approach shots.” Henderson though, knows it’s just one day of four. “I’ll just build off today, learn from it and play better tomorrow.”
Edmonton Oilers relieve assistant coaches C ANADIAN PRESS
Edmonton Oilers head coach Todd McLellan has some room on his bench for new assistant coaches. The Oilers announced on Thursday that associate coach Keith Acton and assistant coach Craig Ramsay were let go and will not return for the 201516 season. Acton spent two seasons with Edmonton while Ramsay was originally hired at the beginning of the 2014-15 season. Both were brought in under former head coach Dallas Eakins and stayed on with interim head coach Todd Nelson after Eakins was fired in December. Nelson’s future with the organization has yet to be made clear. Acton, 57, has spent 18 seasons in various coaching roles split between five NHL clubs - starting as an assistant with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1994. His longest tenure with one organization came with the Toronto Maple Leafs between 2001 and 2011. Ramsay, 64, has 22 years of NHL coaching experience including head-coaching roles with the Buffalo Sabres, Flyers and Atlanta Thrashers. McLellan, who is Edmonton’s sixth head coach since 2009, was hired by the Oilers in May after spending seven seasons coaching the San Jose Sharks. He took the Sharks to the playoffs six times and made the Western Conference final on two occasions. Edmonton has missed the playoffs the last nine seasons, but will have the first-overall pick at this summer’s NHL Draft for the fourth time in six years. The club is expected to take junior phenom Connor McDavid.
First Quebec player granted exceptional status ahead of QMJHL draft
B O U C H E RV I L L E , Que. - Joey Veleno has become the first player from Quebec to be given exceptional status to play as a 15-year-old in major junior hockey. Quebec Major Junior Hockey League commissioner Gilles Courteau made the announcement on Twitter and on the league’s website on Thursday. “I was informed by Hockey Canada this afternoon that Joseph Veleno has been granted exceptional status and is eligible 2015 @QMJHL Draft,” tweeted Courteau. Veleno, who turned 15 on Jan. 13, is expected to jump to the top of the list of prospects for the QMJHL draft on Saturday in Sherbrooke, Que. The Saint John Sea Dogs, who reportedly met with Veleno’s family this season, hold the first pick in the draft. He joins Connor McDavid, John Tavares, Aaron Ekblad and Sean Day, all drafted into the Ontario Hockey League, as 15 year olds granted exceptional status by Hockey Canada. Recent reports said Veleno’s request for the status was turned down because it was filed well after the Feb. 15 deadline. The six-foot 168pound Veleno, a centre from Kirkland, Que., finished 12th in Quebec midget AAA scoring this season with 52 points in 41 games for the Lac-StLouis Lions. He also played for Quebec at the Canada Games.

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar
ARIES (March 21-April 19) You might want to take a stand in the morning, but getting your point across could be difficult. Others seem to be touchy. Later in the day, tap into your creativity and make what you need happen. You could be surprised how resistance melts. Tonight: Catch some zzz’s. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You have a broader perspective than the majority of people. The reason for this is your ability to distance yourself from situations. You often gain insights into others when you do. You will want to spend a little on your home or on a family member. Tonight: Out late. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Deal with a partner as best you can. You will see a situation emerging that could cause a lot of tension in your life. A friend might be part of the problem. Be smart and detach from the issue quickly. Respond to someone else’s inquiry. Tonight: Be spontaneous.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Investigate your options with care. How you see an evolving situation might not be accurate. Give yourself some time to mull this over. If you have a hankering to go out and spend a little on yourself, so be it. You will feel great. Tonight: Do not stay home. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You won’t allow someone to distract you right now. You could be exhausted by what is happening around you, as someone seems to sabotage your efforts. A friend or loved one will try hard to get you to return to your normal, outgoing self. Tonight: The Lion roars. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your creativity will come up with an ingenious solution to a problematic situation. Someone you meet will care a lot about you but still might be unavailable. Be ready to deal with this person, because many strong feelings could be evoked. Tonight: Let it all hang out. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You will choose to stay close
Tundra
to home in the morning. You might feel as if there are no answers to a complicated situation. A friend is likely to help you figure out what to do with this challenging matter. Follow through as you see fit. Tonight: Let the fun begin. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You could be taken aback by what you hear from someone who is close to you. Rather than react, express your feelings. A partner might sound strange in his or her response, but a family member will come through with flying colors. Tonight: Invite a pal over for dinner. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You could be taken aback by a change that is occurring with a financial matter. Know when you have had enough of others interfering with your profitable ideas. You might have to establish stronger boundaries than you initially had thought. Tonight: Nap, then head out. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You are in a position to make all the difference with an emotional matter involving your home
life. You might decide that a different approach would be better. Do not hesitate to put your feelings on the line. Tonight: Time to let go and indulge yourself. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Make it OK to feel less than perfect today. Do what you must, and try to squeeze in a nap if you can. As a result, you will be surprised by how fast you could witness a change in the way you feel. Return calls when you re-emerge. Tonight: You are all smiles. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Listen to your instincts with a friend who tends to cause quite a bit of commotion. Let this person open up and listen carefully to understand where he or she is coming from; you could be surprised by what you hear. Tonight: Make it an early night. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My daughter, “Chloe,” who is not quite 18, dated “Ted” for two years. Things started out fine. Even though neither her father nor I approved of the relationship, we never told Chloe. After two years, she admitted to me that Ted was emotionally abusive, calling her names, pointing out every flaw she had. She was never good enough. If she was happy, she was too happy. If she was sad, she was told not to cry. Chloe had a couple of panic attacks and lost more than 20 pounds. Meanwhile, almost everyone who knew Ted suspected he was gay but unwilling to admit it. Near the end of the relationship, Chloe told me that Ted had been pinching her and lightly slapping her face. A friend who had been in an abusive relationship warned Chloe that these are the signs of an abuser “testing the waters to see what he can get away with.” I was beside myself with worry. I tried to get Chloe to talk to a therapist, but she refused. Six weeks ago, Chloe finally decided to break things off. But last week, she told me she made a mistake and wants to take him back. I told her Ted is not welcome in our home because of how he has treated her. I cannot condone this relationship, and now Chloe lies to us in order to see him. Am I wrong to keep this man out of our house? -Beside Myself Dear Beside: No, but it would be counterproductive. Chloe understands that this relationship is not healthy, but she wants a boyfriend, and Ted has convinced her that he loves her. It’s not love. It’s control. But if you prohibit him from entering your home, Chloe will simply sneak around. That means you won’t know what’s going on. It allows Ted to isolate her from her family and prevent you from helping. Please tell Chloe that you love her and want her to be safe. Let her bring Ted to your house so he knows you are keeping an eye on him. Be civil to him so she doesn’t spring to his defense. But also give her the number of the National Domestic Violence Hotline (thehotline.org) at 1-800-799-SAFE, and tell her she can come to you no matter what. Dear Annie: We are a married senior citizen couple who don’t understand why “No One To Share This With” is so upset that her husband watches pornography. Maybe he is just watching the wrong kind of pornography. My wife and I often watch X-rated videos that we make ourselves. We start by jointly writing a script, and then we get into costume, set up a video camera on a tripod, and act out our roles until we are exhausted from great sex. Our hobby is a lot of fun. It spices up our married life and gives us our own homemade “pornographic” DVDs for our memories. Maybe “No One” could solve her problem by sharing our kind of hobby with her husband. -- Anonymous Happy Couple Dear Happy: Somehow we think that wouldn’t appeal to her. A lot of spouses justifiably find pornography (of any kind) to be disrespectful, although that doesn’t really apply to filming yourselves, rather than watching someone else. We know that many couples role-play in the bedroom, and some of them record the results. As long as both spouses are in agreement and no one is hurt, we say it’s entirely their business. Artistic life reconstruction of the new horned dinosaur Regaliceratops peterhewsi in the palaeoenvironment of the Late Cretaceous ofAlberta, Canada.
Bizarre Alberta dinosaur find suggests horns were for display Bob Weber Canadian Press
They called it Hellboy, and not just for the two horns sticking out over its eyes. The skull from the new species of dinosaur did have cranial similarities to the famous comic book and movie character. But it was where it was found that really earned it the nickname. “The Hellboy nickname is because of all the problems with the excavation,” said Caleb Brown of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology, whose paper on the new dinosaur and its bizarre armour-plating was published Thursday. The 1.6-metre skull was found only about a metre above the water along southern Alberta’s Oldman River, a water-
line that fluctuates widely over the seasons. It was on a steep cliff, prone to dangerous rockfalls. The rock that housed the dinosaur was very hard. To top it off, that section of the river is crucial habitat for Alberta’s provincial fish, the bull trout. No sediment or debris was allowed to fall in the water. Digging out the 68-million-year-old fossil took years. “It was a hellish quarry to work in,” Brown laughs. But it was worth it. Not only is Hellboy - or Regaliceratops peterhewsi, to be formal - a completely new species. It is spectacular. Part of a family that includes the iconic Triceratops, Hellboy has the longest nose horn of any of those
three-horned monsters - up to 28 centimetres long. And while Brown calls the horns over Hellboy’s eyes “almost comically short,” the dinosaur did sport a massive, bony shield protecting its neck and shoulders. That shield featured a row of large, triangular bony plates along its edge, giving it the appearance of a crown. “This is a pretty bizarre-looking one.” It’s one more variation in a family of dinosaurs that sports a panoply of variation in horns and shields, or frills. The number of known horned-dinosaur species has tripled over the last 15 years or so, and that variety is what finally gave scientists a clue as to their purpose.
New head of Bell Media faces backlash over Netflix comment Paol a Loriggio Canadian Press
TORONTO - The new head of Bell Media is facing backlash on social media after saying it should be socially unacceptable for Canadians to use technological tricks to access U.S. Netflix. Mary Ann Turcke told a Toronto telecom conference on Wednesday that using virtual private networks to view content not available in Canada should
become taboo. Turcke, who recently replaced Kevin Crull as the company’s president, recalled reprimanding her 15-yearold daughter over the teen’s use of a VPN to watch the American version of Netflix. She said the girl was told she was stealing and that it was like stealing anything else. Turcke criticized newspapers for publishing how-to articles she said were “educat-
ing the masses on how to get around copyright law.” Many scoffed at her comments on social media, calling them out of touch and unrealistic. “What is this, opposite day? The only people not using a VPN to use Netflix are those who don’t know how,” one tweeted. “I gladly do it, and lots of us did it when working for Bell. Offer choice or I’ll choose for myself,” wrote another.
