Rimbey RCMP extremely busy dealing with thefts, fraud, domestic disputes

This week, Rimbey RCMP Detachment members were extremely busy and responded to 70 calls for service. Highlights include domestic disputes, fraud, theft of cattle, illegal drugs, theft of mail and other serious matters. Police respond to domestic violence Police responded to several cases of violence in a relationship. One investigation resulted in the man being charged with assault. It is not acceptable to hit or head butt your spouse. Unbelievably, in today’s day and age, we have to actually state that. If you are experiencing strife at home and it is escalating to potential violence, there is help. Please contact the Rimbey and District Victim Services Unit at (403) 8438494 for assistance before the police have to become involved. RCMP target drug trade RCMP in Rimbey continue to target the illegal drug trade in our community. An investigation has revealed that

a local man is responsible for bringing hard drugs, such as meth and cocaine, into the community. Officers are currently tracking down this drug dealer on an outstanding arrest warrant. Multiple charges are pending in this matter. The adult male is very well known to police and is evading being captured. It is only a matter of time till he is in custody as he is running out of couches to flop on in the area. Cattle theft reported A local rancher called police to report a possible theft of cattle. When checking his herd, he noticed that a number of his yearlings were missing. With low water levels in the rivers and creeks, cattle are now able to cross waterways without any fencing to hold them in your pasture. Please keep an eye on your herd and ensure they are not leaving your property. It may save you asking the question, “where’s the beef?” Fraud investigated Following a fraud investigation, a 40 year old male resident of Rimbey, was arrested and charged with forgery. The accused stole checks belonging to a local woman and forged her name when he used the checks to obtain money from the victim’s account. Impaired lawn mower driver crashes Police continue to diligently work towards reducing the number of impaired drivers in the community. The

Rimbey Community Wellness Group has put up signs all over town asking citizens to report an impaired driver by calling 911 in attempts to curb the danger. Drinking and driving is no joke; however, this week, officers were dispatched to a rollover involving an impaired driver on a street in town. When police arrived, the man, who is well known to police, was found to be intoxicated and holding his head in agony. His vehicle was upside down and smoking from the collision. Fortunately, the man did not hit anyone else and he was not seriously injured when he crashed his riding lawn mower! RCMP Detachment at (403) 843-2224 or Crime Stoppers: PHONE: 1-800-222-8477 #8477 on Telus Mobility *8477 on Rogers AT&T Crime Stoppers is a community program that does work! On The Other Side

I wish I could put my mind on pause for that time when the gentle softness of sleep suddenly ends and my mind immediately starts shouting orders. But, it seems for me, at least, the two states of consciousness collide harshly, leaving no soft gently lit hallway of time through which I can travel slowly awaking refreshed and blissfully unaware of very much at all. Mondays, it seems is especially difficult. I want to stay forever on my fluffy cloud of nothingness, not wanting to face the hour, the day, indeed,

of that cheese cake I know is hiding in there. But instead, because of their influence on me, I have downloaded this little app on my phone which, apparently, will help me go from a couch potato to a five k runner. Even downloading it made me tired. No doubt, I made the choice with the less active side of my brain, I’m thinking as I start out on my journey to become a five K runner and not a couch vegetable. “Begin your workout now,” the cheerful voice says. “Do a five-minute warm up walk.” All too soon the five-minute warm up walk is over and

I am running for a minute, walking for two. And I feel good, man. I feel charged. And then that silly little voice comes on again. I am, what? I am only half way through? I have to do this all again! I sigh, well, at least I would sigh, if I had enough breath left. Finally, I am done. I bounce up my steps, like a slightly overweight bunny thinking of coffee and other rewards that await me like a kitchen chair which I can collapse on. As I sip my coffee, I feel all good and proud of myself and pleased I did not succumb to desire and stay in bed.

It is a soft morning, a happy morning. The sun drips warmth on the gentle green leaves and tender shoots of grass and even the dandelions look kind of pretty. I drink in all this beauty, mentally scorning my other self, my lower self who wanted to stay buried under my little cocoon of blankets and not experience this natural high. I take another sip of coffee, basking in the feeling of being amazed by me. So that was Monday. Only one day! Now I have to do it again. I sigh! It truly is a long journey.

the week. This Monday was a prime example. This Monday, I did not have time to even ease my way into the work day with a cup of coffee, waiting for the pleasant buzz that comes from such a delicious jolt of caffeine while I contemplate life and its meaning in a detached state of semi consciousness. No. I had to go running. It all started with my kids who, in spite of their upbringing, which I think may have involve unhealthy food like Cheerios and probably too much television, have become extremely health conscious and active. They all wear Fitbits and they all run a ridiculously long way almost every day and they don’t even drink Diet Coke. They definetly do not have snacks in their pantry like peanuts which apparently will add 300 calories to your daily intake if you so much as breathe on them. I love my kids, I really do, but their behavior makes me want to have a nap and shuffle over to my brand new shiny white fridge for some

This past Sunday I spent the day riding my motorcycle. My target destination was the Saskatchewan River Crossing on the edge of the Banff National Park. I’m not much for prophesying any immediate weather: but from what I figured, while standing on my deck and looking into the sky, the day was looking to be just fine. I was barley slingshot distance out of town and I

had already eaten a sizable amount of airborne insects. The ones that I didn’t consume ended up peppering every inch of my forward facing exterior. The worst bugs to hit are the ones you can see from a short distance flying through the air: grasshoppers, dragonflies, and bees. By the time I rode into Rocky Mountain House, I had three confirmed bee collisions; each had hit an exposed portion of my face with enough force to almost knock me off the back of the motorcycle. At the fuel stations I have a routine: fill up the motorcycle tank, wash my Ray Bans with a squeegee, wipe my face clean of any road or insect debris, pay for the fuel, and then continue on. I was half way through my routine when I remembered I have an important medical prescription at home in a drawer — epinephrine. Bees and I

do not combine well. I’m deathly allergic to bee stings and I had become aware of my new medical condition the hard way. A couple of past summers ago, I was riding my motorcycle in B.C. I was struck in the neck by a very large bee. Within the next few kilometers I begun to have trouble breathing and I began to cough constantly. At my next fuel stop in Grand Forks, I tried to find a drugstore in hopes of finding some magical elixir for this strange condition I had developed — no dice. I continued on. In Castlegar, it was late and I was planning on getting a motel room for the night. Before I cruised the town for lodging I stopped for fuel. This time I removed my jacket because my right arm was feeling funny. That is when I noticed a horrendous rash; a quick check found this

rash was all over my stomach and the side of my neck; in the mirror of my motorcycle, my lips were swollen up like I had gone over the top with Botox injections. When I went in to pay for my fuel the attendant looked at me like I was some deformed ogre. I enquired to which direction the hospital was. The doctor gave me a shot of epinephrine and I had all the weird hospital machines attached to warn the nurses if I was going to start running towards the light. Castlegar’s hospital is a small operation: this meant that the motorcycle was staying and I was leaving for Trail in an ambulance. In the Trail hospital I was breathing through a mask (like Darth Vader) on and off all night and I stayed hooked up to all kinds of wires and devices. In the morning I was free to go, but with no means of transport back to Castlegar

where my motorcycle was. The staff at the hospital tried tracking down a cab or a bus to take me — no luck. One doctor suggested I hitchhike; I did after that same doctor dropped me off on the side of the highway to throw my thumb out. I made it back to Castlegar riding with a friendly carpenter dude. My bike was safe, I was healthy again, and I rode all the way back to Rimbey. My EpiPen was in my drawer at home while I was mentally revisiting the little misadventure of mine this past Sunday. EpiPen or not, I braved the insects of the roadways, made it to the Saskatchewan River Crossing, and back home — allergic reaction free. I’ve been lucky since my near devastating discovery and maybe I should find a pocket to house my epinephrine before my next ride.

Bluffton chuckwagon driver wins 1st at the Grande Prairie Stompede BY TREENA MIELKE

The upcoming season has started on a high note for Obrey Motowylo, a Bluffton chuckwagon driver, who won the chucks crown at the Grande Prairie Stompede. Motowylo, driving the H & E Oilfield Services Ltd. Outfit won the $25,000 first place winner’s cheque as well as a new GMC Sierra Pickup Truck at the Grande Prairie Stompede held May 27 to May 31. Motowylo said he had a good feeling about the race. “I wasn’t totally surprised to win,” he said.

Taking a few minutes to chat about the race by phone while getting a hitch put on his new truck, he voiced his gratitude for his horses which he said ran very well. He also gave credit to his outriders Chance Flad and Shawn Calf Robe. “It was a very good way to start and it was nice to win a truck.” The second stop for the WPCA pro tour was in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from Thursday, June 4 to Sunday, June 7. The tour then goes to Medicine Hat, then High River, finally ending up at the Ponoka Stampede which will be held June 25 to July 1.

Lynn Brown was more than a little shocked when she went to the end of her driveway to pick up her mail last week and discovered one of the group mailboxes had disappeared. “There were two of them sitting there and one was gone,” she said. Brown, who lives south of Hwy. 53 on Hwy. 771, immediately phoned Canada Post who confirmed the mailboxes had been stolen. “They told me we would have to come into

town to get our mail,” she said. The theft has left Brown feeling frightened and worried. She said she is fearful thieves are looking for social insurance numbers which may be on federal documents or bank account numbers which are on bank statements. “People need to be vigilant,” she said. Sgt. Mark Groves from the Rimbey RCMP said the police are working with the Canada Post Investigation Unit to solve these crimes and one person has been

charged and is now behind bars. Curtis Patton, 26, from Rimbey has been charged with seven counts of possession of mail belonging to seven Rimbey and area residents after stolen mail was seized from three separate people at a residence in Rimbey. “There has been a rash of these (mail thefts) all over Central Alberta. “We’ve had dozens of complaints. Sylvan Lake was also hit hard.” Groves said the RCMP continue to work with the local Rimbey and District

Rural Crime Watch and Gull Lake North Citizens on Patrol partners to solve these crimes. Eugene Knapik, spokesperson for Canada Post confirmed several rural mailboxes have been tampered with in the Rimbey area. “There has been criminal activity and vandals have attacked our street furniture.” Knapik said it is difficult to ascertain what mail has been stolen because no one knows what mail was in the mailboxes when they were taken. He said Canada Post is doing everything it can to support the police in their investigation. He encourages the public to pick up their mail every day and to report any suspicious activity to the police. Sgt. Groves said that traditionally, mail theft will net an 18-month jail term. This year, Rimbey Detachment made mail theft one of our Strategic Priorities on our Annual Performance Plan for 2015.

Boys and Girls Club gears up for summer BY TREENA MIELKE

The first full school year for the new boys and girls club of Wolf Creek – Rimbey is completed and has been a huge success thanks, at least in part, to the great support from the community. “We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from so many people in the community,” said Annette Peck, who is charge of the program in Rimbey. Peck said any child registered for Terrific Tuesday can join in the fun for a free summer wind-up pizza party in the upper auditorium on June 16 from 3:10 to 5 p.m. It promises to be great fun, she said. “This will be our last session this school year before we launch into our summer day camp program beginning on June 30.” The day cap program is for children ages six to 12 and activities include theme days, trips to the pool every Thursday, games at parks around town, sports, crafts, parties, contests and a potpourri of other great activities. Program coordinator, Jolene Naismith will be joined by summer assistant Danny Buist again this year and they are planning to keep everyone busy.

The program runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will cost $10 per day. Registration is on a first come-first serve basis and registrants may select individual days until a maximum of 15 participants are registered. For more info call 403-843-1066 or register through the recreation department at 403-843-3151 as soon as possible. Space is limited, said Peck, so register early. The mid-week mash-up is ongoing and will continue to offer free games, contests, sports, food, special guests and events throughout the summer. This program, geared for teenagers is held Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. “It is a great way for this age group to stay in touch with old friends and make some new ones over the summer holidays,” said Peck. More volunteers are always needed for this program and even helping out once a month would be greatly appreciated, she added. For more information please call/txt 403-7046641, 403-843-1066 or email Rimbey@ponokayouthcentre.com or visit www.facebook.com/ bgcRimbey@BGCRimbey on twitter.

Ponoka County Fire Advisory Effective June 1, 2015, Ponoka County is under a Fire Advisory. Due to continued lack of moisture in all areas of the county and forecasted warm windy weather, the County will continue to not authorize any new Fire Permits or the use of burning barrels until further notice. However, use of approved backyard fire pits with a screen for cooking or warming will once again be allowed at this time but please use with extreme caution and not leave the fire unattended. Always remember to be fire smart and use extreme caution while using your fire pits, burn barrels and while conducting any open burning. In a split second an “under control” fire can take a turn for the worse. Before and during your fire, be aware of the current weather conditions and re-evaluate if the weather changes. Always extinguish your fire if the change in weather increases the hazard of your fire. We thank you for helping keeping the residents of Ponoka County safe!

The province is banning the sale of menthol-flavored tobacco in Alberta after September 30, 2015. “More than half of young tobacco users are using flavored tobacco, whether it’s menthol or a fruit or candy flavor. By banning the sale of these products, we can reduce tobacco use among youth and help our children stay healthy. Removing the exemption of menthol also ensures a fair, consistent approach to flavored tobacco.” Sarah Hoffman, Minister of Health Menthol flavored tobacco products will continue to be available for sale until September 30, 2015. The four-month grace period is in place to allow retailers to deplete their existing stock of menthol products. On June 1, the sale of other kinds of flavored tobacco will be banned in Alberta under the Tobacco Reduction Amendment Regulation. Exceptions to the ban are cigars that cost more than $4 each and weigh five grams or more; and pipe tobacco. Also as of June 1, cigarettes, bidis (thin, hand-rolled cigarettes, e.g., from India), blunt wraps and certain cigars will be required to be sold in minimum package sizes. This will eliminate smaller, cheaper options that are often used by youth and young adults. “Menthol cigarettes are starter products that make it easier for youth to get hooked on tobacco. The Canadian Cancer Society applauds the Government of Alberta for being a leader on this issue and taking this bold step that will help better protect our youth from the harmful health consequences of tobacco use.” Angeline Webb, Canadian Cancer Society, Alberta/NWT Division Each year, tobacco use is linked to about 3,000 deaths in Alberta.

Rimbey Drop In celebrates A Taste of Canada during senior’s week BY TREENA MIELKE

Rimbey Drop In Centre was a hub of activity last Tuesday as people from near and far gathered to sample a Taste of Canada. President Doreen Glanfield said she was very pleased with the event. “It was very great,” she said. “It went over very well.” About 165 people attended the gala affair, which featured tables with samples of food from every province in Canada. Glanfield and a group of volunteers who worked diligently to make the day a success prepared all the food. “We tried to get all the food as close to representing a province as we could get,” said Glanfield. The ladies worked very hard.”

Peggy Makofka, executive director of Rimbey FCSS said she was pleased the day went so well and was so well attended. “All around it was a very good day,” she said. Makofka said a great deal of work and planning went into making the day a success and the seniors well deserved such a celebration. “They built our community, our province and our country.” Ab Seaward from Gull Lake and Lloyd Greenough from Sylvan Lake, who often play for dances at the Drop In, provided the entertainment. The event was co-sponsored by Parkland Manor, Rimbey FCSS, the County of Ponoka, Rimoka Housing Foundation, Rimbey Primary Care Network and the Drop In.

Strong leadership for our Seniors

MP Blaine Calkins

The job of running a country as great as Canada requires strong leadership, our seniors know about strong leadership. Their hard work, sacrifice, and determination have made Canada into the great country it is today. Our Government recognizes the immense contribution our seniors have had on this great coun-

try. While the opposition parties like to act as if our Government has abandoned them, our Government has a strong record of supporting Canada’s seniors, while the Opposition parties have a strong record of voting against initiatives that support our seniors. Since 2006 about $2.8 billion in annual tax relief has been provided to se-

niors and pensioners, but the opposition has voted against every single one of these measures. These measures include things such as Pension Income Splitting, increasing the Age Credit amount by $2,000 and doubling the Pension Income Credit to $2,000. Our Government has also increased the Guaranteed Income Supplement

(GIS) income recipients can earn through employment without any reduction in GIS benefit from $500 to $3,500. Additionally our Government introduced the largest GIS increase in over 25 years – this has helped over 680,000 seniors in Canada. Our Government is providing an additional $5 million per year to The

New Horizons for Seniors Program which promotes volunteerism amongst seniors and younger generations, as well as provides seniors an opportunity to mentor younger generations. The New Horizons program also raises awareness surrounding elder abuse and promotes social participation and inclusion of seniors ,again the Opposition parties have voted against all of them. Economic Action Plan 2015 also invests in seniors through the proposed Home Accessibility Tax Credit; this tax credit will help seniors renovate their homes to make it easier for them to stay in their family home while living a more independent life. Additionally, our Government has proposed to reduce the minimum withdrawal requirements for the Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF). Both of these proposals have been well received by the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) but the opposition’s disturbing trend of voting against Canadian seniors is expected to continue. Our Government will continue to show the strong leadership that seniors need and deserve, whether that is through establishing and expanding the Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) or through initiatives such as Pension Income Splitting ,our low tax plan has helped remove over 380,000 seniors from the tax rolls. Unlike the Opposition parties who are more interested in raising taxes and legalizing marijuana, our Government will pursue the best interests of our seniors. BUTCHER Michiel Kenneth Feb. 14, 1978 May 27, 2015 With our hearts filled with sadness that we announce the passing of Michiel Kenneth Butcher. What are the qualities that make a good man; integrity, perseverance, thoughtfulness and devotion. These are qualities that Mike lived by and everyone knew him as such without question. Mike was a remarkable father, husband, brother, son and best friend that always put everyone else’s needs, especially his three beautiful kids in front of his own. Mike loved taking his friends and family on camping trips and had a passion for backpacking. Mike’s many gifts was helping others out when they were in need. In saying that Mike was a good man would be an understatement. Mike leaves behind: his loving wife Tanya (Scott), his three incredible daughters; Jenna Marie, Kaitlyn Rebecca and Alissa Jolie; his father Garth and mother Shannon (Beisal) Butcher; brother Murray and wife Janis(Stolte); brother Beau and wife Melissa (Larsen); father-in-law Reginald and mother-in-law Lana Scott; sister-in-law Paula and husband Jason Lenz; brother-in-law Cameron and wife Kristine Scott; sister-in-law Jennifer (Gladstone) and predeceased brother-in-law Reginald Scott. Mike was a proud uncle to many nieces and nephews that will miss him deeply. Mike also was a lifelong friend to Robert and Brad. To everyone that was a friend of Michiel’s, please know that he enjoyed and cherished every minute spent with you and was proud to call you a friend. A Celebration of Michiel’s Life was held from the Rimbey Church of the Nazarene at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday June 3rd, 2015. A time of fellowship and refreshment followed. If friends desire, memorial contributions in Michiel’s memory may be made to Rimbey Kid’s In Sports. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.wilsonsfuneralchapel.ca

Bentley library fundraiser met expectations of board BY JUNE NORVILA

This was the second year in a row for a major fundraiser hosted by the Bentley Municipal library board. The tables were decorated with yellow, pink, lavender and green floating balloons. The silent auction items were set out on display. Sponsors names were displayed around the hall and on table centerpieces. The dance floor awaited the band. Volunteers and staff from the Bentley Municipal library were ready to stage their Bentley Centennial Birthday Bash Library Fundraiser in early May and attendees were not disappointed. MC for the evening was Troy Gillard from Big 106 and voice of some of the Bentley Generals home games. He started out with some history of the local library before introducing the five member band FunHouse who played a broad mix of music to keep the crowd entertained. After prompting from the band of a karaoke-style Elvis song from Gillard, some people got up on the dance floor with some coaxing and the evening was underway. About one hundred tickets were sold. “Many people don't understand why we need to

fundraise. It is a misconception that we receive enough funding to keep the library open,” says library board chair Sandy Jameson, “when in fact we need to fundraise simply to balance our budget, i.e. payroll, electricity, heating, telephone bill, etc. And we hope that we can raise a surplus so that we are able to expand on the programs offered at the library.” Thanks to generous sponsors, donors, the community, and volunteers the library board met their fundraising goal. “Overall, we (the board) were pleased with our 2015 fundraiser. We have met our budget needs in a dampened economy and may even have a bit extra to expand on some of our future goals,” Suzanne Moore, library manager, indicated. “Our biggest sponsor this year was Octo Mechanical Inc of Leduc. Servus Credit Union in Bentley was also a big sponsor, donating for the second year in a row. Many other businesses in and around Bentley donated and were key to the success of our event. We greatly appreciate their support.” Close to fifty silent auction items drew bidders back and forth during the evening. From flowers and books, to home décor and a variety of gift baskets, art work and

hockey items, knitted baby blankets and kitchen items, to lighting and a portable barbecue, and a Swim and Stay travel voucher were offered. There was even a Harley Davidson cribbage board, a set of Bentley history books, and a Dick Damron book and cd. A power point display put together by library staff showcasing local historical pictures played on a wall near the auction items throughout the evening. People were reminded to drop by the library to activate their free one-year library card that is a birthday gift to the community from the library commemorating Bentley’s 100th anniversary this year. Tables full of hot entrees were supplied by Bob Ronnie Catering along with tantalizing desserts. Much of the success was due to the hard work and commitment of library staff Vera Boettger, Tammy Izquierdo, Jolene Naismith and Suzanne Moore and library board members. There was also help from some library society members and lots of other volunteers. Library board members are: Chair Sandy Jameson, Maureen Rue, treasurer Sandra Smyth, Joan Dickau, Jean Oram, Kim Schmidt and town council representative Cora

Knutson. Proficient volunteers staffed the bar. The 50/50 draw was won by Briana McBeth, an employee from the Sylvan Lake Vet Clinic who was in

attendance. Door prizes were awarded to many lucky winners. For your free one-year library card drop by the Bentley library during their regular

Library clerk Vera Boettger finally had time to relax and enjoy the evening when she and husband Dwayne were two of the many who enjoyed the music of FunHouse (on stage) at the Bentley library fundraiser in May. June Norvila Photo
