Demand for meals outpacing donations

NEPAL FUNDRAISER A19 Concert raises $28,000 for earthquake victims

Sally Ann sees monthly servings soar above 11,000

DIRT BIKER SENTENCED

Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News

The Salvation Army is serving more meals and sheltering more clients than ever before, but officials say donations haven’t kept up. After serving just over 7,000 monthly meals last year, numbers have risen sharply in recent months, with 11,509 provided in April. And although community ministries director Nate McCready said the Sally Ann has good relationships with grocery stores and other food partners, funds are still needed to cook the meals. The increase comes, in part, because of a decision to serve full, nutritious meals every day, rather than every second day. Previously, full meals had alternated with soup and sandwiches. The food is also serving more than the city’s homeless population. Public relations director Deb Lowell added that recent closures to a variety of retail outlets – including Future Shop, Target and local IGAs – also may have brought forward more people who haven’t found another job. “They may be unemployed, very unexpectedly, and often times folks who are struggling financially will use our services to offset their other expenses,” she said. “They’re using their limited cash for paying their rent if they are housed.” Continued on A4

Dirt biker sentenced for reckless riding Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A dirt bike rider who led police on a chase involving a dog team and a helicopter through Mission last summer has been sentenced on several charges. Clayton Robert Pierce, 23, was handed a two-year driving prohibition, one year of probation and fines totalling about $1,000 for four counts of breaching his bail conditions and one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and driving while prohibited. He was sentenced June 3 in Abbotsford provincial court. Pierce was arrested Aug. 16, 2014 after police had received numerous complaints

Pierce, whom police have described as a “prolific violent offender,” was back in custody the following month on three outstanding warrants for a total of 11 charges. He has been in prison since. The charges related to the home invasion are still making their way through the courts.

Increased use of shelter

The organization’s shelter has also seen increased use. Over the last two years, the Salvation Army has also lowered its barriers for admittance. Where once prospective clients had to be clean of drugs, now admission is based on behaviour. That reflects both best-practices and recent research that shows housing-first approaches lead to better long-term outcomes. Those lower barriers have led to more demand for the Sally Ann’s shelter, and the organization now houses nearly a quarter of those who come to the shelter, up from seven per cent previously. Donations, though, are trending in the opposite direction. “As our demand has increased, we’ve actually seen donations go a bit lower,” McCready said. Similarly, funding

Surrey Six killers sue over prison treatment, conditions

Sheila REYNOLDS Black Press

Two gangsters who shot six men to death, including Abbotsford’s Ed Schellenberg, in the Surrey Six mass murder have filed a lawsuit against the provincial government, saying they suffered numerous abuses while kept in segregation before their trial. Matthew Johnston and Cody Haevischer, both members of the Red Scorpions gang, were convicted of six counts each of first-degree murder and one of conspiracy in connection with the execution-style shootings of six men in a Surrey apartment building in October 2007. They were sentenced to life in prison in December 2014. In separate civil claims filed in B.C. Supreme Court last week, the two 30-year-olds allege that following their arrests in spring 2009, they spent more than a year in solitary confinement. Though in separate prisons, they both claim they were denied family visits and kept in cold cells smeared with blood, urine and feces. They also allege they were video recorded, even when using the toilet. “Because he had no one to speak to and very little human contact, the plaintiff began talking to himself or singing to himself,”

says Johnston’s claim. Haevischer was held at Surrey Pretrial Centre and said the window in his cell was spray-painted black and he wasn’t allowed to speak to his 12-year-old daughter for two months. Both Johnston and Haevischer claim the RCMP directed prison officials to keep them in isolation. Both were released from solitary in June 2010 after a B.C. Supreme Court ruling found the warden at Surrey Pretrial had breached Jamie Bacon’s rights while he was in segregation. (Bacon, also a Red Scorpion, is still awaiting trial in the Surrey Six murders.) Haevischer and Johnston are seeking unspecified damages for the alleged breaches to their charter rights and say an award is necessary to ensure proper and safe treatment of those imprisoned in the future. None of the allegations has been proved in court. Haevischer and Johnston were convicted of murdering six men, four of whom had ties to the drug trade, and two of whom were innocent bystanders – 22-year-old apartment neighbour Christopher Mohan and gas-fitter Schellenberg, who was servicing fireplaces in the building. Haevischer and Johnston are both appealing their murder convictions.

Protest on chicken manure anniversary Homeless and advocates march on Gladys Avenue Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

Around two dozen protesters marched along Gladys Avenue on Thursday afternoon on the two-year anniversary of the spreading of chicken manure on an Abbotsford homeless camp. Members of the B.C./ Yukon Drug Wars Survivors advocacy group carried signs and blocked traffic in both directions during the demonstration, which was held to mark the anniversary and to protest the ongoing homeless situation in Abbotsford. Those in the marched carried signs with slogans such as “Housing is a right” and “Windows not bars.” On June 4, 2013, Abbotsford city staff spread chicken manure on a Gladys Avenue homeless camp near the Salvation Army. The incident prompted outrage and a human rights complaint against the city. Barry Shantz, found-

The Drug War Survivors are currently involved in a legal challenge of City of Abbotsford bylaws that prevent people from camping in parks. With the help of the Vancouver non-profit Pivot Legal Society, they

are arguing that the bylaws are unconstitutional and criminalize homelessness. One person yelled at the protesters from the side of the street, asking why they weren’t protesting at city hall. While they empathized with the need for support services for those experiencing homelessness, they worried about the ongoing negative impacts on their own properties, such thefts

and impact on property values. The protesters marched down Gladys at about 1:30 p.m., prompting the closure of the road. Police drove on either sides of the demonstration and aided with traffic. The protesters entered the lobby of the MCC building on Gladys Avenue, filling the area and hanging signs over the banisters.

Three teens arrested for arsons Seven small fires set in 48 hours Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

Three teen boys have been arrested in relation to a series of arsons that occurred in Abbotsford last Monday and Tuesday. Const. Ian MacDonald said seven small fires were set in dumpsters, garbage cans and a wooden bench in the area of Immel Street and Old Clayburn Road. Five took place between 3 and 7 a.m. on Monday, one occurred Monday night and one was on Tuesday evening. MaDonald said among the locations were Hazelwood Cemetery, Immel Plaza, an apartment building and Margaret Stenersen elementary. Police are not revealing how the fires were set. MacDonald said, although they were the small, the fires had the potential to cause greater damage because of their proximity to buildings. MacDonald said officers began their investigation by checking the streets and talking to kids who were out in the earlymorning hours.

“Confessions and admissions came pretty quickly after that,” he said.

On Point “I know everything, Daddy.” So proclaimed my daughter one day in her third year of existence. Me too, I smiled. Last week, she graduated from Grade 12. Those early words heralded a child’s journey in an endless accumulation of knowledge. Little did I realize at the time, my own all-knowing state would, in her view, diminish over the coming years – particularly in early teenhood, when dad would be frequently relegated to irritation status. As alarming as this was, I took solace in the fact that other fathers, and most mothers, were experiencing the same phenomenon. How could it be that we knew so much before our children were born, and carried that lofty mantle through their

early years, yet watched as our titles as hours in this world, when we gazed into Knowers of All Things Worth Knowing each other’s eyes, in equal wonderment. All children deserve that from their parents. I did, and I am eternally grateful for it, and the opportunity to do so myself. Now, my beautiful girl, step forward on your new path. Better city metrics for success Raise money

I am deeply troubled by the level of misinformation presented in Mark Rushton’s recent column “Jobs bring people and economic benefit.” I am curious as to how Mr. Rushton believes council is “delaying” the process. So far, Abbotsford’s city council has followed the legislative process of three readings while allowing time to collect community input. In other

words, they are fulfilling their obligations to the law and to their constituents. In fact, there seems to be very little delay as the construction process has been underway weeks before a final decision has even been made. Mr. Rushton also suggests that the jobs and economic spin-off are key reasons for this development. Sure, the temporary construction jobs would be great,

but after the project is complete we’re left with mostly minimum wage retail jobs. This is hardly sufficient to support an individual, let alone a family. The idea that this project will provide economic spin-off is optimistic at best and a myth at worst. Just look at how well that has worked around the Abbotsford Centre, where similar promises were made. Perhaps the most

damning part of Mr. Rushton’s editorial is his complete failure to understand and articulate UFV’s growth strategy. His view is based on misinformation and speculation. As I formerly worked with UFV on the UDistrict project, I can assure readers that UFV is committed to development around the Abbotsford campus. The unprecedented

partnership between UFV and the city’s planning office for the UDistrict should provide a positive indication of this. You need only look at a map to see there are many prime areas to develop within the defined neighbourhood. That same map will also show you the prison is not within the neighbourhood boundary. The constrictions of ALR and the freeway actually form a nice boundary given Abbotsford’s history of spreading out development.

The only “folly that will be long lamented after the fact” would be the commitment to an outdated caroriented development strategy along a major transit corridor. Abbotsford has plenty of large strip malls and it’s time we asked for something better. The quality of a development shouldn’t merely be judged on its purported capacity to create jobs, but rather how it contributes to the health and attractiveness of the community in which it will reside. Nearing a decade of helping showcase local musicians, the Envision Financial Coffee House Concert series continues to fill Saturdays with free music. With the eighth season just underway, the popular concert series provides opportunities for local artists to perform in a casual atmosphere while music fans experience a wide range of styles, ranging from jazz, blues and folk to country, rock and pop. Since striking the partnership with the Abbotsford Arts Council, Envision Financial, a division of First West Credit Union, has contributed $147,000 to help cultivate local artists. The first half of the concert series goes until June 20 and then breaks for July and August, with the second half resuming in September. On select dates, concert-goers will also have the opportunity to take part in Envision Financial’s signature cause, The Full Cupboard, by bringing nonperishable food or cash donations to concert events. “The Full Cupboard is designed to raise food, funds and awareness for food banks in our communities,” says Susan Byrom, senior manager of community investment at First West Credit Union. “The great thing about The Full Cupboard is that all food and funds collected in your community will stay in your community.” Since launching in 2013, The Full Cupboard has raised more than $17,000 for food banks in Abbotsford and Mission. Quilters present Wrapped in Colour Guild has been in existence for 35 years Brenda ANDERSON Black Press

Fraser Valley Quilters are ready to show their true colours. The guild, which has been in existence for 35 years and draws its more than 200 members from communities all across the Lower Mainland, will present Wrapped in Colour, a biennial show of all things related to quilting, on June 12 and 13 at the George Preston Recreation Centre in Langley. More than 300 traditional and modern quilts will be on display during the twoday event. One of the highlights of the exhibit will be a quilting challenge, with about 60 people participating. Weeks ago, each competitor pulled two pieces of fabric from a bag to form their colour scheme. Using a predetermined traditional block, they then had to be as creative as they were able within those parameters. Members of the public will be asked to vote for their favourite when they are unveiled The showcase will also feature a quilt raffle, merchant mall, tea room and a members’ boutique. There will be $2 grab bags of fabric and patterns available for purchase, along with quilting books and other related items. Proceeds from the

tion dresses, at no cost, to young women who otherwise would not be able to afford one. In addition to their shows, the FVQG has

donated around 300 preemie quilts to the special care nursery of the B.C. Children’s and Women’s Health Care Centre in Vancouver. Fraser Valley Quilters Guild is always looking for new members for both its afternoon and evening groups. “One of the great things about quilting is that you can do it at all ages and stages of life,” said Arnold. Wrapped in Colour takes place on Friday, June 12, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the guild, visit fvqg.org.

Concert raises $28,000 for Nepal Event held at Emmanuel Mennonite Church A recent concert in Abbotsford raised almost $28,000 to help victims of the April 25th earthquake in Nepal. The concert, held at Emmanuel Mennonite Church, was attended by more than 300 people and featured music, reflection and prayer. The Nepal Earthquake Relief Concert was organized

by Vanj Thiessen and Calvin Dyck to raise money for the relief efforts in partnership with the Pokhara Church community in Nepal. Performing at the concert were Dyck, Paul Williamson, Betty Suderman, the West Coast String Quartet and Shim Beack. They began the concert with the national anthem of Nepal.

Preand postearthquake videos and urgent emails from Kathmandu and Pokhara friends gave the audience a glimpse into what the Nepali people are facing. Donations from the concert are being channeled through Habitat for Humanity to a Nepali organization called Asal Chhimekee Nepal

(Good Neighbour Nepal), already providing relief to many destitute families. The Canadian government will match these donations. Vanj and Ernie Thiessen are now planning an online motor vehicle auction in July to raise funds for the long-term needs of Nepal. Visit dutcheauction.com to learn more.

The BC interior town of Cache Creek declared a state of local emergency Sunday after a flash flood raged through the town. This campaign will help pay for recovery efforts. Please help us put our town back together! Even the smallest donation will make a difference. Officially endorsed by Mayor & Council, Village of Cache Creek

With $1 million on the line, Kyle Gerard sent his golf ball straight at the pin 165 yards away. Gerard knew the ball had a shot at finding the hole and earning him a seven-figure pay day during the finals of the 15th annual Rotary Million Dollar Hole in One event at Fraserglen Golf Course. “I was crossing my fingers and throwing up prayers,” said Gerard, a three-handicap golfer who plays nearly every week in the Vancouver Golf Tour as an amateur. But while Gerard’s distance and aim were on, the green didn’t comply and the ball rolled just to the right of the pin, coming to a rest 6’2” from the hole. Continued on A23

Golfers fail to qualify The U.S. Open won’t feature any Abbotsford golfers after Nick Taylor and James Lepp failed to qualify during sectionals Monday, and Adam Hadwin withdrew. Monday during a sectional qualifier in Columbus that saw 120 players vying for just 15 spots. Hadwin withdrew from the sectional before it began. Taylor and Hadwin are both playing on the PGA Tour, which held its Memorial Tournament nearby over the weekend. Taylor missed the cut, while Hadwin finished tied for 57th at one-over.

DID YOU KNOW?

Air and water can get into the A/C system which can reduce the efficiency of the system and can also lead to corrosion or fungus, mould and bacterial growth that is blown into the passenger area.

THIS IS WHAT WE CAN DO... To complete the HVAC service a

technician will clean out the air conditioning lines, evaporator and ventilator and then kill any bacteria mould or fungi. Then deodorize the entire A/C system and the vehicles interior. Finally, after a complete inspection for leaks and wear, the technician will measure and replenish the oil in the compressor. The air inside your vehicle will be much cleaner and 4 to 5 degrees cooler, thanks to increased efficiency.

Record number aim for pin From A22

The shot may not have won the 35-year-old equipment rental salesman $1 million, but it was enough to claim top prize in the event and a bevy of consolation prizes. A day earlier, Gerard had come to Fraserglen planning to hit 100 balls and hopefully qualify for the following day’s final event. His sixth shot dropped in the hole 95 yards away, one of 10 aces over the course of the qualifying week. On Sunday, the qualifiers were pared down in elimination events, with Gerard advancing to the final alongside Marty Peters, Rick Allen, and Dee Gorrell. Gerard had made the 2013 final, but sent his ball well wide of the hole that year. Peters, who won last year’s event, finished second in this year’s event, which is a fundraiser for Abbotsford Hospice Society’s Holmberg House,

which is named for Dave Holmberg Jr., who passed away in March 2011 at the age of 48 years after a battle with cancer. It was a good event for the Holmberg family, which has donated well over $1 million to facilitate the creation of the hospice, which is hoped to open next spring. Gorrell, the daughter of Lee and Dave Holmberg Sr., advanced to the final after winning the first-ever ladies final, with a shot 36’8” from the hole. That shot, had it gone in, would have netted Gorrell $100,000. As it was, she was the first woman to finish in the top ten and hit for the big drive in the event’s history. Organizers announced that around $44,000 had been raised from the Hole in One Challenge. While that’s down from last year, 2015 saw a record number of participants take swings. A total of 536 men, women and children participated, up from the previous record of 493 set in 2013.

setting 53,000 spectators at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, the Canadians, who seemed anxious in the first few minutes, settled down with much of the play coming through Schmidt and Christine Sinclair within the first 30 minutes. The game remained scoreless until Sinclair edged the Canadians ahead in the last minute of play with a perfectly placed penalty kick. McLeod was honest about the squad’s performance. “I think if you asked anyone on the team we’re not happy with how we played,” said McLeod, post-game.

“I think we were nervous and we played like it.” Uncharacteristic mistakes by the Canadians included several turnovers in the defensive end. Canadian coach John Herdman had a slightly different perspective. “China didn’t really hurt us – they hurt us through our own mistakes. “It wasn’t necessarily nerves; it was just sloppiness across our back five, and we’ll improve on that,” said Herdman. Group ‘A’ action pits Canada against New Zealand, tomorrow (Thursday) at 6 p.m. in Edmonton.

God looked around his garden And found an empty place, He then looked down upon earth And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering He knew that you were in pain. He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb. So he closed your weary eyelids And whispered, “peace be thine”. It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home.

CLOSE Marjorie Elizabeth (Phyliss)

Passed away in the Abbotsford Regional Hospital early morning June 9th, 2015. Mom was born in Hamiota Hospital, Manitoba, October 27, 1916. She moved to Winnipeg and married Emil Close and had 4 children Wayne, Sharon, Carol and Greg. She enjoyed summers at Grand Beach and her home in Winnipeg. She moved to White Rock in 1989 and enjoyed her life there. Emil passed away in 1992 and mom moved to Abbotsford and lived there until her passing. Mom really loved her upbringing on the farm in Manitoba and loved telling stories about those early days. Mom is on the minds of all who love her and all the love and attention she devoted to her family. A personal note here from her son Wayne; Without her love, caring and support all her life, I would not have had a life and not known what real love is. I owe her everything. There will be a remembrance gathering for her in Winnipeg next summer. Mom will rest in Chapel Lawn there with Emil by her side.

Margaret It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, Mom and Nana on June 4, 2015. Margaret is survived her loving husband, Jack of 57 years; her children Sandra (Stew), Brian (Sheryl), Barry (Benita) and Susan. Also saddened by her loss are her precious grandchildren: Samantha, Jamie, Amelia (Alexander), Tyler, Camilla, Spencer, Liam and Carlene; her brother Jack, her sister Joyce, her special cousin Sandra and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sisters Dorothy and Frances. Margaret was born to Elizabeth & Frank Dorward in Dundee, Scotland on September 23, 1931. Margaret’s confident and compassionate character led her to a career in nursing. Her adventurous spirit had her answer a call for Scottish nurses in Canada, landing her in the small town of Viking, Alberta in 1955. It was here that she met Jack, the love of her life. Margaret and Jack were married in 1958 after Jack’s graduation from dental school, beginning their lifelong adventure together. They landed permanently in Abbotsford in 1959 to start their family. Margaret was the heart and soul of the family, the neighbourhood nurse and the compassionate caregiver and volunteer to those in need. She had a wide circle of friends and loved her afternoon bridge groups. She was the most proud of her beautiful grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to babysit or attend a concert, recital or convocation. Margaret had a way of making each of her children and grandchildren feel like ‘the special one’. We will miss you dearly but will love you forever. A private Celebration of Life will be held by the family. Innovative designs make downsizing at Aston Row a step up.

our home has been good to you. You’ve raised your family here. But now the kids are starting to move out, the rooms are empty, and around every corner you see another project that needs your attention. Your weekends are spent doing yard work and painting rooms while your friends are busy vacationing in Hawaii or golfing at the club. What are the options? Condos are convenient but there’s very little space to entertain your friends and family. Conventional townhome complexes often create the fishbowl effect and don’t offer the privacy you value. Aston Row, 46 custom-built rowhomes in the Midtown district of Abbotsford, is the answer. Built by Algra Bros, national award-winning builders of Garrison Crossing in Chilliwack, Aston Row has the space, level of quality, and carefree living perfectly suited to the discerning downsizer. Aston Row’s exteriors recall London’s elegant Terrace Row homes of the Victorian era.

However, 19th century London ends when you walk through the front door into the open concept main level. The kitchen, dining room, and living room are bright, spacious, and designed with livability in mind. An island is the centrepiece of the gourmet kitchen, perfect for guests to gather around as you prep dinner. The living room, with a sunny bay window, easily fits a full suite of furniture, including a large screen television. You’ll find the dining area roomy enough to comfortably host holiday dinners. Aston Row’s soundproof concrete common walls provide the privacy and quiet you require. Options abound to make Aston Row the home of your dreams, including personal electric elevators, hardwood floors, and custom cabinetry, With two, three, and four bedroom floorplans, Aston Row offers you plenty of living choices. A

lex Kotai started off his lending career working for a major Bank. He spent most of this time in management roles and was responsible for significant mortgage targets during his time there. As time went on though he became disheartened with organizational politics and the way customers were treated. “At the end of the day everything came down to numbers with the customers” says Alex. “How much revenue could you make off of them and how many services could

you get from them.” As the focus shifted more and more towards this he had enough and decided to go on his own as a mortgage broker 8 years ago. Alex has always been a “people focused” and “customer service” driven person and becoming an independent broker allowed him to keep this mantra while still working in the business he loved. After several years as a broker he decided to open his own brokerage Your Mortgage Source. In the last 5 years this brokerage has

grown from a single man operation to having over 20 brokers and has become Abbotsford’s largest mortgage brokerage. “I believe if you work hard and treat people honestly and fairly it will all work out in the end” says Alex. Your Mortgage Source is a franchise of one of the nations’ largest mortgage brokerages Verico Financial Group Inc. Through this membership in Verico, all of its brokers have access to the best mortgage rates and products in the industry. Your Mortgage Source is able

to place your mortgage with many different banks, credit unions, online lenders and other sources including private lenders. About Mill Tower

uilt in 1968 as an impressive grain mill to service area farmers, the Mill Tower stood as an icon of the rapidly growing ag agri-business that would make Abbotsford the agriculture capital of Canada. Although A Abbotsford remains a leader in the agri-busines agri-business, the need for the grain mill changed over time, the land was sold and the tower was later developed by Conwest Developments, part of the Conwest Group of Companies. The redevelopment in 2009 revealed a transformation unlike any other in the lower

mainland. The tallest building in Abbotsford at 245 feet tall, Mill Tower is a landmark in Abbotsford’s Railway District, boasting bright, unique and inspiring office spaces that stem from solid roots in the Abbotsford community. The redevelopment of such a unique building was a challenging but rewarding process. Careful attention was taken to address pieces of the tower from the grain mill’s operating days, such as the large grain silos that ran the full height of the building. The silos remain as they were too large to remove but they were carefully cleaned and then sealed top and bottom. Clues of its former use can be found throughout the Mill such as the massive 42” hexagonal concrete pillars and steel knobs

on the ceilings where giant hoppers were attached. The Tower’s height is equivalent to that of a 20 storey building, however, because of the unique layout only 5 floors can be occupied, but they do not disappoint with 20 ft open ceilings, exposed steel rafters and 16 ft windows that take in picture perfect views. wide-plank laminate flooring, walk-in closets with organizers, soaker tubs, bedroom air conditioning, secure underground parking and storage. The same philosophy of not having any surprise upgrade costs or extra fees applies to the pricing as well. “It’s great that we are transparent with everything we do. The price for each condo is posted on the website for 24/7 access,’’ comments Nicole. “I hear from many purchasers that they were able to crunch the numbers and make their purchase decisions well into the evening hours.” Waterleaf is remarkable value for mountain view homes,” says Nicole. “It’s the smart buyers who know it’s well worth the wait.
