most of the trail building around Revelstoke. There’s a good chance you’ve experienced their work, whether it’s coasting down Flowdown at Mount Macpherson, cruising through the alpine on Frisby Ridge, or motoring around the Revy Riders network. Acton estimates they’ve built or fixed up close to 100 kilometres of trail in the Revelstoke area in the past seven or eight years. Their goal is to build trails that are sustainable and fun to ride. “The key to making a good trail is building a trail that will last,” Acton tells me. “Water is the key. You want to build a trail that will shed water. “The layout guy is pretty key for that.” The layout guy for the trail we were on was Joel Pirnke, who is

Seven recommendations have been made prior to moving forward with a bylaw for a major development in Arrow Heights. A 135-page staff report on the proposed 1,200-unit Mackenzie Village development is asking for the developer to complete a number of studies and plans prior to moving on a new bylaw. They include a financial impact study, traffic study, infrastructure & servicing study, environmental report, parks & trails plan, waste management plan and an affordable housing strategy. The report by Dean Strachan, the manager of development services, follows the April 30 open house at Arrow Heights Elementary that was attended by 154 people. The massive mixed-use, high-density development would be located on 35 acres of land off Nichol Road. Strachan has made the following recommendations prior to developing a bylaw: — That a study looking at the financial impact on the city be conducted. The study would look at the impact if it was developed as single family residential, and if it was developed as proposed. — That a traffic study be conducted by a civil engineer, including reviews of access points to the development, the Illecillewaet River crossing and the Nichol Road/Airport Way intersection. — That a plan be developed that looks at what infrastructure will be needed to support the development. This would provide

The art and design of trail building ALEX COOPER

alex.cooper@revelstokereview.com Jeff Acton sits in the box of his mini-excavator, bouncing it up and down, hammering at the ground around a big tree stump. The stubborn tree planted itself in an old, overgrown road and it’s roots spread into the rocky bed. Now, it’s made for a big obstacle in a new trail the Revy Riders are developing as part of their network on the flank of Frisby Ridge. I met Jeff Acton, who’s the main machine operator for Little Big Works, last week. With Builder, a mountain bike movie that focuses on trail building, screening this Thursday at the Roxy, I sought out local trail builders to hear their story. Acton works for Little Big Works, the local business that does

Don Hawker's Little Deuce Coupe ALEX COOPER

alex.cooper@revelstokereview.com For Don Hawker, building his 1932 Ford Coupe was a labour of love. It involved four years of sourcing parts and two years of assembly to put together his beautiful, award-winning ride. "It's actually a replica," he told me. "We built it right from scratch." Hawker's Lamborghini-gold painted hot rod will be one of more than a hundred vehicles gracing the streets of downtown Revelstoke for the annual Revelstoke Vintage Car Club Mountain Paradise Show and Shine on Saturday, June 13. Not being a car buff, I always thought all the cars on display at these shows were spruced up originals. Turns out, that's not always the case. Hawker's Ford Coupe was a multi-year project that involved sourcing parts from across North America in order to replicate the 1932 vehicle. Despite it's classic look, it's actually registered in 1932. "There's more 1932s on the road today than in 1932, that's how popular they are," he said. To build it, Hawker sourced a frame from a hot rod dealer in Airdrie, Alberta. The motor is from a 70s GMC, while the upholstery was done in Vernon. The front windshield was custom made in Calgary, while other parts were either sourced at Lordco or from parts dealers in the States. The

seats came from a 1970s GMC Jimmy wagon. "I wanted one since I was in high school and I finally got the chance," he said. "I'm semi-retired and I finally had the chance to build the car." Hawker built the vehicle with the help of John Scarcelli Sr. and Jr. at their shop in the Big Eddy. By building a replica, they were able to create the car Hawker dreamed of owning since he was a kid in high school listening to the Beach Boys Little Deuce Coupe. "I guess if you got it in your blood and want to do it," he said, when asked why he went through the time and money to build it. "I probably could have bought one cheaper but I don't have the right to say I built it. To build something the way you want it is a really good feeling when you finish." The 15-coat paint job was done by East End Autobody. It was awarded best paint at the Nelson car show last summer. Hawker is a hot rod buff who previously owned a 1939 Chevrolet. His latest project cost upwards of $100,000, and it's probably his last. "I'll probably keep this one quite a while," he said. "It's only fair to my wife with me being away all the time at the shop in the Big Eddy." The Show and Shine takes place downtown this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. At night, there's a party at the community centre with Randy "Elvis" Friskie. Tickets for the dinner and show are $25.

Mackenzie Village: Feedback ranges from opposition to support Development, from page 1 the framework for a Development Servicing Agreement if the application proceeds. — That environmental conditions of the site be reviewed by a professional biologist. — That a parks and trails plan be developed. — That the site use a centralized waste disposal system with enclosed bins to prevent wildlife access. — That an agreement be reached that could outline parameters for affordable housing. Strachan's report includes a copy of all the feedback received following the open house. There was a mix of support, opposition, and many views in between. Common themes included support for mixed-use, affordable housing and the proposed limited commercial use, while concerns were expressed about the proposed density, traffic, infrastructure capacity and the sheer number of units. Many people outright opposed the proposal. Here's a sample of comments. — "We need a project like this. The spin offs will help our community. Getting ready to retire. I would buy one to stay in Revelstoke rather than going to the Okanagan." — "I think this is what Revelstoke needs. A place for people to go that don't want to do yard work anymore. People like new homes." — "Seems logical to have additional access in this area to aid in traffic reduction near hospital access." — "Great idea. The buffer zone of lower density housing is a nice touch." — "I am worried about extra traffic on 4th

This concept drawing gives an idea of the look of the proposed Mackenzie Village development. The view is looking south. ~ Image by Selkirk Planning & Design Street and Airport Way (maybe remedied by adding a couple street lights for the people trying to turn onto those streets.)" — "Less units!! Need a real emphasis on naturally occurring community planning, not forced. ie. planned but not utilized because it doesn't foster community." — "This area needs to remain R1 single family. We all live in Arrow Heights to have

space. We didn't want crowded neighbourhoods, that's why we built where we did." — "To support any development in Arrow Heights the city needs to link the footpaths from the development to downtown. Airport Way will get a lot busier and infrastructure needs to keep up with the extra traffic." — "lf commercial is to be introduced sug-

gest no one commercial space over 1500 Sq ft. per retail location. Residence above commercial space should be encouraged." — "We are an expanding community. Whether here or elsewhere in the community, we will expand. I think we should consider the proposal." — "The cost of snow removal will be extreme because of the design of roads, housing, parking lots, sidewalks, etc…" — "I think building a huge complex in a nice quiet residential neighbourhood is wrong. 1500 units is a lot of people. They'll all be trying to go over our tiny bridge, speeding thru my daughter's school zone, and putting strain on our systems. Can we actually supply them with water and sewer?" — "I think mixed housing types is great, but having highest density on the already busy Nichol Road in winter is not so good." — "As a local business owner in construction it is exciting to see the potential for the economic growth this project will bring." The report includes a response to concerns from developer David Evans. He said the plan is designed to be flexible so that if smaller units are not being purchased, bigger homes could be built instead. He said the capacity designed to support the development of Revelstoke Mountain Resort could also support his proposal. They are already conducting an infrastructure study. The development would tap into the city sewer line, but road maintenance, snow removal, garbage and recycling would be paid for by the development, Evans wrote. Council was scheduled to discuss the report on Tuesday, June 9, after press time. You can read the complete report on the Review website.

Remuneration for firefighters was down from 2013, when they received a significant bump due to retroactive pay raises in their labour contract. Graham Inglis, the director of finance,

NEWS REVELSTOKE VISUAL ARTS SOCIETY

Federal Liberal candidate hits Revelstoke ALEX COOPER

alex.cooper@revelstokereview.com Revelstokians had their first chance to meet the Liberal candidate for Kootenay-Columbia last week. Don Johnston, who was chosen as the party's candidate in May, was in Revelstoke on June 3–4 as part of his first tour of the riding. Here, he made a few stops around town, met with local party supporters at Zala's and spoke to Mayor Mark McKee. Johnston said his goal was to get a sense of the issues facing the riding. "Between now and the election campaign, I'm hoping to make three complete tours of the riding," he said. "That's ambitious because it's a big riding." Johnston grew up in Nelson and is the former CEO of the Columbia Basin Trust and Canada World Youth. He has 40 years of community development work in Canada and abroad. Johnston has a mountain to climb if he hopes to win the election. The Liberals haven't been victorious in the region since the 1970s, and the party only got 3.5 per cent of the vote in 2011. Still, he believes the party's fortunes here can turnaround — pointing to the unexpected NDP victory in Alberta as signs politics can change quickly. He feels the Liberal Party is best positioned to defeat MP David Wilks, saying they are more likely to pull voters from the Conservative base than the NDP. He dismissed calls to unite the so-called progressive, anti-Conservative vote behind the NDP. "It will be a challenge but we feel people are open to hearing a message from the Liberals," he said. Johnston spoke to many common issues the anti-Harper opposition talks about, such as diminishing democracy, the increasing power of the Prime Ministers Office, and the lack of action on climate change. "People forget that what they need to look at first and foremost is who is the person we're electing and are they able to represent that region," he said. "As a Liberal, if I get elected I can actually represent the people and be supported in doing that." Other issues he has raised are: — A preference for diplomacy over war. “You can’t get involved in diplomacy when your attitude toward international relations is to create an enemies list and a friends list.” — An independent Supreme Court. “Canada is a country where we understand that the only thing

Why the delay in issuing water advisory? ON REVELSTOKE

Alex Cooper

All in all, the City of Revelstoke did a pretty good job of handling last week's boil water advisory. They got the problem fixed in a few hours and managed to get the advisory lifted by Interior Health by the end of the weekend. My concern is with the amount of time it took to get the advisory out to the public. According to the city, the water main break that cause the problem happened at around 4 a.m. I didn't get an e-mail about it until after eight — four hours later. It appears EZ Rock got the news a little

earlier, but the first I saw was a post on Facebook in the RevySell group. That led to people linking to an unrelated advisory in place for the Thomas Brook system. By the time the city did send out a bulletin, I had called Public Works and posted a story. In today's world, it shouldn't take that long to get important news out to the public. On top of contacting the media, there's social media resources the city has. Fortunately, the water main break wasn't serious one and the water was never contaminated — it was just untreated and unfiltered, and probably safe to drink. Still, hopefully the city will do a more prompt job getting news out if there is another emergency problem in the future.

MACKENZIE VILLAGE — RIGHT IDEA, WONG PLACE I like the plan for the proposed Mack-

enzie Village development in Arrow Heights. Revelstoke needs more highdensity, lower-cost, lower-maintenance housing. They're cheaper to service and the economic spin-offs from the construction are benificial. At the same, I feel that Arrow Heights is the wrong location for it. I know if I lived there, I wouldn't want a high density sprouting up in the neighbourhood. Of bigger concern is that it will potentially add several thousand new residents who will have to drive to downtown most days. We don't need more cars on the road, let alone the emissions and pollution they cause. This high-density development should be built close to downtown, where walkability is high. Somewhere like the Mountain View Elementary site or that big lot across from Southside grocery. Sure, those lots aren't as big, but they are great spots for higher-density developments because they are central. not suburban.

LETTER

Let the Flats be enjoyed by all, motorized included

Editor, Re: NCES asks for ban on motorized recreation on Columbia River Flats in the May 20 issue of the Review. In checking with BC Hydro's rules of conduct, posted on their signs at the entries to the Flats, we note that they are reasonable, namely: — No fires — No camping — No littering of dumping of any material — Use existing routes — Respect private property and rights Nowhere do we see restriction on motorized vehicles. It seems that the "environmental damage" isn't in stirring up mud (as in mud bogging), but in trash being constantly dumped on the edges of the reservoir. When the reservoir fills, the trash floats and impedes water sports.

When a few machines got stuck in the mud, there was an accidental loss of some oil. There usually is some loss of oil wherever machinery is used, namely: parking lots, filling stations, logging operations, railroads, etc… Most oils used these days are biodegradable, so the minimal loss during the course of a recreational outing is superfluous. Unfortunately, newcomers to this valley fail to understand the history behind why the flats exist in the first place. In the 1960s, BC Hydro chose to expropriate the beautiful farms and flood the reservoir seasonally, causing fluctuation in the water levels. This has degraded the fish population that once enjoyed all the creeks flowing into the Columbia. It has also caused creeks such as Drimmie to change course constantly. To be concerned about a creek flowing through the floor of a reservoir when the water

is down defies common sense because when the water level rises, it floods the whole area and changes the dynamics of the creek. Mud is the result of a fluctuating water level in the reservoir where grass won't grow anyway. The Flats are essentially a dead zone, as explained to us by a BC Hydro employee (except for the invasive grass planted by BC Hydro). Mud will heal in the next flood. The airport deems water foul undesirable. The question is: What is so sensitive about this habitat when the water level is so inconsistent as to prevent the formation of a true habitat for wildlife? Leave the Flats to be enjoyed by young and old. Sincerely, Olympe and Joan Astra Revelstoke

Revelstoke's Women's World Cup connection ALEX COOPER

alex.cooper@revelstokereview.com When the Women's World Cup kicked off in Edmonton on Saturday, 53,000 fans packed Commonwealth Stadium to cheer on the host team against China. It's a far cry from 30 years ago, when the first Canadian women's national team was assembled in Victoria, before there was a Women's World Cup and before women's soccer was part of the Olympics. "There wasn't a lot of support. We had to pay to play," said Revelstoke's Janet Lemieux, who was the sweeper on that first team. "We had to take time off work and do all kinds of things. We had to play in men's uniform." Lemieux was playing for a club team in Edmonton that dominated the national scene, winning five championships in a row, when the call went out to put together a national team in 1986. The best female players gathered for tryouts in Winnipeg and were put through gruelling tests, playing three times a day. In the end, Lemieux was one of about two dozen women who made the squad. The team included Charmaine Hooper, who would go on to become Canada's first female soccer star. Last weekend, they gathered for a reunion prior to the start of the World Cup. For Lemieux, it was the first time since 1987 that she saw many of those players; her international career was cut short by a devastating leg injury at a tournament in Taiwan.

Annual General Meeting Tuesday June 23rd at 7.00pm

Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre An intimate setting with appetizers and wine. Live music by Jacolyn Daniluck with Lida Carey on the grand piano.

There isn't a lot of information online about that early team, but Lemieux does have a profile page on the Canada Soccer website. Her match statistics show that she played in six games. The first two were at a tournament in Minnesota in 1986. She remembers beating the United States 2-1 in their first game. There, she had to defend against a teenage Mia Hamm, who would go on to become one of the sports biggest stars. In 1987 they played in Minnesota again, before going to Taiwan in December, where they played in front of big crowds. It was there that Lemieux experienced her career-ending injury. It was a different time back then, with nowhere near the support for the women's program there is now. Players were given training regimens and expected to follow them, but they didn't have the support of a team of trainers and experts like today. "We used to play against the boys because it was hard to find women's teams that were competitive enough," she said. Lemieux thinks the hype of the Women's World Cup is fantastic. "I think women should be getting the same support as the men," she said. "I think it's starting to approach that but it was very grim at the beginning. I'm glad to see some women getting attention because they're very competitive."

BUSINESS

Business beat: Landscape advice with Kelly's Bobcat IMOGEN WHALE

Ryan Corbett and Joel Chevrier, owners of Kelly's Bobcat. ~ Photo contributed

Special to the Review Revelstoke winters might be snow filled, but our spring and summers still offer a plentiful period for avid gardeners to get into their yards, whether they are growing fruit, vegetables, flowers, or just maintaining a green lawn. This year, Ryan Corbett and Joel Chevrier, owners of Kelly's Bobcat (KBC), expanded their business by purchasing Indigo Gardening. KBC already offers equipment rentals and full landscaping, from installing irrigation and water features, building rock retaining walls, and selling landscape supplies, to snow removal. Owning and operating Indigo will compliment KBC by offering gardening services such as lawn mowing and weeding. Corbett, a landscaper with 16 years experience, started off apprenticing under a certified landscaper and horticulturist in Vernon, BC. Corbett, himself is responsible for some popular Vernon landscaping, including at Predator Ridge. He has some green conscious advice on how to keep your garden happy this year. “The biggest thing is irrigation,” Corbett explains. “I recommend putting in an irrigation system if you can. That way, you use the minimum amount of water needed to water your plants, reducing water waste.” While KBC installs systems, Corbett says he is happy to offer advice to anyone interested in installing their own, and carries any parts they may need in stock. When it comes to watering, try early morning or evening watering. If it's too hot outside, you risk shocking your plants. A note to those who have put down turf or planted seed, it should be kept moist like a sponge for two weeks. The city actually allows watering daily for two weeks if you've just planted or laid grass. Mowing the lawn, something synonymous with summer lawn care, requires some forethought to those interested in garden savvy techniques. “It was a hot May,” Corbett says. “From now until August, or the end of July, you really only need to mow once a week.” Corbett recommends rejecting the trend to “scalp” your lawn to lessen the amount it needs mowing. “Three inches high is how we cut,” he explains. If possible, Corbett suggests purchasing a mulching blade for your mower (available at Rough Country Marine) as it rejuvenates the ground by helping keep it

moist and offering nutrition to the lawn as it decomposes. When it comes to trees, shrubs and gardens, Corbett suggests using mulch. “Mulch adds moisture and releases nutrients,” he explains. Corbett recommends Natures Gold Mulch, highly composted, black and rich. If your garden lacks a good soil base, try putting in organic soil. “Black Diamond soil is ready to go and great for plants,” he says. As for weeding and fertilizing, here are a couple of Corbett’s tips. When it comes to weeding, if you can rototiller or hoe, you'll save your back (though Indigo does all weeding by hand). As for weeds in the lawn like dandelions, think long term. “Don't go down the 'how can we kill them' road,” Corbett says. “Instead, focus on having a healthy lawn, because a strong lawn will naturally force weeds out. Aerate or de-thatch the lawn every two years. Feed your lawn non toxic fertilizers (less than 25% nitrogen) every spring, late summer and fall.” And if you have any questions? Head up to KBC/IG and chat to Corbett. “Stop in, I'll happily answer and give advice,” Corbett says. “It's important to KBC/IG that we enable homeowners to create and maintain their gardens, whether they utilize KBC/IG or do it themselves!”

Two new shows opening at RVAC JAKE SHERMAN

Special to the Review

Two new shows are set to open at the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre this week — one focusing local crafters and the other on local youth and the environment. The main gallery will exhibit local metal and woodwork in conjunction with the Year of the Craft, an ongoing celebration of artisanal work. The side galleries will highlight the work of Arrow Heights Elementary students. Most of the work being shown as part of the Year of the Craft was completed at the community woodwork shop, where local artisans pay a monthly fee to use the space. The pieces include jewelry, sculpture, and furniture, as well as a number of miscellaneous pieces that defy definition. The student's project is called, Our Home, Their Home, and focuses on the local birds that reside in our wetlands. The exhibit was funded by the Revelstoke Arts Council as part of the Art Starts program, and organized by teachers Michelle Gadbois, and Tara Johnson, who enlisted local artist Tina Lindegaard to mentor the children throughout the project. It was the first time the acclaimed artist had ever worked with students, who ranged from fifth to seventh grade. “It was really amazing,” said Lindegaard. “It was the first time I’d participated in this kind of project, and I learned as much, if not more than the students. Helping the students to interpret their studies through art and creativity, made the information so much more exciting and relevant to each of them.” For inspiration, the students were taken on

a number of field trips out to the local flats to gain some first hand experience with their artistic subjects. In addition the their paintings, they also built birdhouses. “My favourite part was being able to go down to the wetlands and sit in the quiet doing art,” said sixth grader Andie Reynolds. Gadbois and Johnson made clear that the year long educational endeavor was a massive success, and that they could visibly sense the profound effect it had on their students, who learned about the value of protecting and caring for their local environment while improving their artistic skills. “I feel proud of myself because the sketches I’ve done recently are way better than before,” said seventh grader Catherine Gingras. The exhibits open with big changes underway at the gallery. The building features a fresh coat of paint, and new community gardens. The changes come about as a result of three years of hard work, as well as grants received from the city of Revelstoke, the provincial government, the Arts Council, and the Columbia Basin Trust. “There has been a huge transforming going on, it has been a long time coming, and it’s all beginning to come together,” says Jackie Pendergast, the gallery administrator. “You obviously get into this kind of work because you want to make a difference, and together, we certainly have.” The opening reception will take place Friday, June 12th, from 6–9 p.m., and the exhibit will run until Friday, July 3. “It should be a very eclectic show, and we have some wonderful pieces to look at,” said Pendergast.

Local trails built to IMBA standards Builders, from page 1 used for most of the Revy Riders trail layout. Pirnke got his start trail building the oldfashioned way — building unsanctioned mountain bike trails around Revelstoke. As a teenager, he and his friends would go out and set up steep, technical lines in the woods. Rednecks Revenge, on Boulder Mountain, is his handiwork. He also volunteered on local trail crews who were doing sanctioned work. “At the time Revelstoke didn’t have all that much for trail infrastructure,” he says. “There was only a few people riding bikes at that time.” Eventually, his passion for trail building turned into a career. Around 2002, he joined a crew that helped build Rossland’s famous Seven Summits trail. “It snowballed from there,” he said. Pirnke now owns and runs MTB Works and does trail building all over the province. He helped develop a trail plan for McBride, B.C., and was doing trail work in Smithers, B.C., when I reached him. Chris Pawlitsky, the president of the Revy Riders, goes to Pirnke for trail layout when he can. “You’re always in search of that perfect line,” says Pirnke. “You look a lot at grades, you look a lot at forests, vegetations, ecosystems.” As the layout guy, Pirnke will establish the trail corridor. Then a crew will come through and clear the right-of-way. Then Little Big Works comes in with its personnel to dig up the soil, remove roots and rocks, and smooth out the trail. Acton will lead the way in his excavator and anywhere from one to six people will follow up, grooming the trail behind him. Today, Ben Rodd is doing that work. They generally have some flexibility within the

The Martha Creek trail has seen better days. Built as a hiking trail in 1991, it was soon discovered by mountain bikers as an epic, nine-kilometre, 1,500-metre vertical descent from near the top of Sale Mountain to the valley below. Unfortunately, the trail has worn down and hasn't seen the necessary maintenance. Bridges are falling apart and some sections lack proper drainage. Meanwhile, the trail has grown in popularity and is regarded as one of the most epic mountain bike descents around, putting more and more pressure on the trail. Enter the Martha Creek Makeover. Launched by Matt Yaki, the owner of Wandering Wheels, and Recreation Sites & Trails BC, the project seeks to rehabilitate the trail by fixing the bridges, and addressing water issues and erosion. The goal is to make the trail sustainable, while still maintaining its steep, technical character. To make this happen. Yaki is aiming to raise $30,000 to get a professional crew to lead the work. He has launched a crowdfunding campaign and sought out local sponsorship. This Thursday, he will be showing the movie Builder at the Roxy Theatre. The movie looks at the people who build the trails, and also shows world class riders that make them look so good. There are two showings – an all ages one at 6:30 p.m. and a 19+ one at 9 p.m. Ticket are $15 for the early show and $20 for the late show. For more information visit www.marthacreekmakeover.com.

REVELSTOKE GRIZZLIES

The Revelstoke Aquaducks got the 2015 summer swim season off to a great start over the weekend, winning the top girls team, top boys team as well as top overall team for the first time in club history. With the combined scores of the boys and girls, the Aquaducks finished less than 130 points in front of the Kelowna Ogopogos to win the meet, with the Ducks bringing in a whopping 3996 points to the Ogopogos 3867 over the two days of competition. A large part of this victory can be credited to the relays, which are worth double points, which were swam clean and without disqualifications throughout both days. Under-six Emilie Paquin stepped in as alternate and swam above her age category for both the Division 1 and 2 Girls relays, and saved both the teams from scratching, which would have cost the Ducks two third place finishes and more than 60 points. Also swimming up was U6 Cohen Maddison on the Boys Division 4 relays that both placed top three. Being the first meet of the season with no finals, normally personal bests are sparse. However, this year all the Ducks either got at least one new personal best, or were within five per cent of a lifetime best. First meet jitters did not stop senior Gina Cinelli from making club history by breaking

the oldest record on the board in the Division 7 Girls 100 metre breaststroke, and also winning a gold aggregate for the Girls Division 7. The success of the Revelstoke team was showcased by the sheer dominance during the aggregate awards at the end of the meet. The Revelstoke Aquaducks swept the Divison 1 and 2 Girls, with Autumn Griffith-Doyle winning gold for the Girls Division 1, Nyola Willms the silver, and Emma Mair the bronze. Kayln Gale won the gold for Division 2, Sani Supinen the silver, and Madeleine Hobgood the bronze. Boys Division 1 was also very strong with Ryder Litke winning the gold and Bence Berkenbosch the bronze. Division 2 Boys had Murdoch Tegart winning the silver. In Division 3, the girls had Devyn Gale winning the silver, with Alex Jay winning gold for the boys. In Division 4 Boys, Nolan Gale and James LeBuke won gold and silver respectively. In Division 5 Boys, Jackson Litke won silver in his category. In Division 7, Katie Howard won her first ever aggregate by finishing directly behind teammate Gina Cinelli for the silver. Nadia Salon won the Girls Division 8 gold, with assistant coach Julia Gow picking up the silver. The Revelstoke Aquaducks would like to thank all their sponsors and volunteers who helped make this event such a success. The Ducks have a bottle drive this coming weekend before they are back to competition the weekend following in Lumby.

Jose Medina passed away at Queen Victoria Hospital, Revelstoke on Saturday, May 30th, 2015 at the age of 87 years. A Funeral Service was held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Revelstoke on Friday afternoon, June 5th with Father Aaron de Dios Celebrant. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 729 Victoria Street, Kamloops, B.C. V2C 2B5, in memory of Joe. Joe was born in Santa Cruz das Flores, Azores, Portugal on July 11, 1927 and had been a resident of Revelstoke for 55 years. He loved gardening, snow blowing and walking. Locals will recall seeing Joe taking his daily walk to the ski hill, something he did for 28 years with his good friend. Joe loved his cars and especially enjoyed travelling in them. He was an avid hockey fan and there was nothing he enjoyed more than watching a good game of hockey.
