As well, there will be a tribute to longtime Relay for Life kids’ tent volunteer Christy Johnston, who died last week after suffering a stroke earlier this year.

The BC Court of Appeal has ordered the present and past chief and three councillors from the 2009 Lower Kootenay Band council to repay $5,000 each for bonuses they awarded themselves in 2009. The $25,000 total was part of a $125,000 compensation received from the Regional District of Central Kootenay to provide access through LKB land from Highway 21 to the landfill site. Information provided to the court said that former chief Chris Luke Sr. and councillors Mary Basil, Sandra Luke, Carol Louie and Jason Louie (now band chief) voted in an in-camera meeting to give themselves $5,000 bonuses to compensate for work done on the band’s behalf. At the time, councillors received a stipend of $360 a month. The payments went unnoticed by other band members for two years, despite being included in audited annual financial statements. LKB member Wayne Louie then filed a suit. In the original case the court found in favour of the defendants. That decision was overturned by the BC Court of Appeal June 3.

Volunteer support for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life may have dwindled to the point that it was cancelled this year, but a few volunteers are keeping its spirit alive with a public event to raise awareness and funds. The Family Fun Day to Conquer Cancer will run 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Saturday at Millennium Park, with games for families, a walk on the community trails and activities on the nearby outdoor gym equipment. “We want to focus on the health aspect,” said Julie Groot, one of the organizers. “We know activity is probably the best way to ward off cancer.” The day will also include entertainment — with Emma Kade performing at 12:30 p.m. and Debra

With Thanks After 32 years as a funeral director in this beautiful Creston Valley, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the many families that I have had the honour and privilege to serve during the loss of their loved ones. We are so blessed to have such wonderful individuals that assist the families during their time of loss such as ministers, church ladies, florists, organists and soloists, all of whom I have had the pleasure to work with. Lastly, words cannot express the gratitude for my wife Cheryl and my children Alicia, Gillian and Derek for the many sacrifices that you all made over those many years. I look forward to my retirement. God Bless

Kingsgate home burns after lightning strike BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Laurie and Teddy Mahood’s Kingsgate home burning on May 30.

Heather Hood

The Kingsgate home of Laurie and Teddy Mahood was severely damaged by fire after being struck by lightning around 10:30 p.m. May 30. Their neighbour, Dave Simpkins, saw the lightning strike the home’s roof. The Yahk Kingsgate Vo l u n t e e r Fire Department and the Eastport, Idaho, Hall Mountain Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire, containing the fire to the roof and upper floor, which were destroyed. A travel trailer parked beside the home was also saved, as were nearby chickens and chicks. “People, pets and chickens are all safe,” said Laurie. “The rest is just stuff.” Some of their possessions were rescued, though, from the uninsured home. Both are sculptors, and neighbours

formed a “bucket brigade” to help rescue 60 pieces — worth about $50,000 — of Teddy’s West Coast native artwork, which he plans to sell to recover enough to start over. Also rescued were the couple’s medications, Laurie’s green silk wedding dress (a 1520’s German Renaissance gown with pearls and garnets) and her digital camera. Lost, however were Laurie’s professional medium format camera system, a large collection of fabrics and birthday presents hidden for Teddy’s 71st birthday on June 7. The Mahoods plan to rebuild their house, and will hold art shows in the near future to raise the funds. ”I’m just so thankful for all the wonderful neighbors who helped us, for the fire departments from YahkKingsgate and Mount Hall, and the Creston police,” said Laurie. For more information, contact Laurie at 250-550-8202 or visit MahoodSculptures.com.

TOWN OF CRESTON REVITALIZATION TAX EXEMPTION BYLAW NO. 1821 To encourage the economic revitalization and economic growth of the Town of Creston, which includes investment and employment opportunities, Council intends to establish a Revitalization Tax Exemption Program, as per Section 226 of the Community Charter. The Program is for the development of new commercial businesses or the redevelopment of existing commercial businesses. Upon adoption of Bylaw No. 1821, the Town will accept applications for a Revitalization Tax Exemption only in the years 2015, 2016 and 2017, and no applications will be accepted after August 31, 2017. The reasons for creating the Revitalization Tax Exemption Program are as follows: a. Council recognizes that a critical component of the continued economic revitalization and growth of the Town is to build upon the success of its prior initiatives by encouraging the development of new commercial businesses, or the redevelopment of existing commercial businesses in the Town’s zones that permit commercial uses, which will stimulate investment in the Town and provide new employment opportunities and commercial services for its existing and future residents, thereby attracting further economic growth and increasing the Town’s tax base; b. the Town of Creston’s Official Community Plan identifies the commercial objective of creating a strong and vibrant commercial economy in the Town of Creston; and, c. the Town of Creston’s 2015 Corporate Strategic Plan identifies economic development as a corporate priority. The objectives of the Revitalization Tax Exemption Program are to: a. encourage new commercial businesses in new and renovated buildings in the Town’s zones that permit commercial uses and thereby establish the commercial services and the investment and employment opportunities that will attract additional investment and economic growth to the Town of Creston; and b. reinforce the municipality’s “open for business” approach and attract redevelopment and new development of commercial businesses within the municipality. Eligible improvements means i. an existing building, used only for an eligible use, on appropriately zoned land and having a renovation project value of $50,000.00 or greater, as determined by the Town’s Chief Building Official, and for which a valid Building Permit has been issued by the Town; or ii. a new building used only for an eligible use, that is constructed on appropriately zoned land and having a construction project value of $150,000.00 or greater, as determined by the Town’s Chief Building Official, and for which a valid Building Permit has been issued by the Town. Council will be considering first, second and third readings to Revitalization Tax Exemption Bylaw No. 1821 at the June 10, 2015 Regular Council Meeting, and adoption at the June 23, 2015 Regular Council Meeting. Further information is available upon request at Town Hall, 238 – 10th Avenue North, Creston, 250-428-2214, Ext. 226. Bev Caldwell Executive Assistant

Broadway-themed concert raising funds for auditorium society BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

The Prince Charles Theatre will come alive with the sound of music when Creston Community Auditorium Society performers take to the stage on Saturday night. “It is a collaborative effort,” said director Derek Kemle. “Everyone is working on their own favourite numbers.” Bright Lights and Billboards will feature some of Creston’s best singers performing single, duet and group numbers, all designed to raise funds for the auditorium society, which purchases equipment for the venue. “This is such a good group of people who really enjoy performing,” said Kemle, who is home with his family in Creston for the summer before flying

off to take a job with Disneyland Paris in July. “They all really want to perform well.” After the opening group number, “Magic To Do” (from the musical Pippin), Kemle will sing “All I Ask of You”, a duet from The Phantom of the Opera, with Brittney Boehmer. She appeared in the Foolighters Theatre Society’s spring production of Carousel, which he choreographed. Kemle also opens Act Two with his rendition of “I Believe”, from the smash Broadway hit, The Book of Mormon. Also performing will other other singers, many of whom are familiar to Footlighters fans — Jennifer Adams, Morgan Benty, Dan Caverly, Devan Coward, Brian Lawrence, Anna Payne, Logan Thompson and Simone Wiebe.

Most of the numbers scheduled are from popular Broadway musicals. “These are very talented people who approach their roles with great professionalism,” said Kemle. The finale, appropriately, is a Disney medley that features songs from 10 Disney musicals, including The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Frozen, Dumbo and Mary Poppins. After spending several seasons performing on Disney cruise ships, he said it is a pleasure to find such a high standard of talent here in his hometown. “I wish I could do more of this — just getting a bunch of people I like together to sing songs that we all like,” he said. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students/seniors and $5 for children under 12, available at Creative Fix, Black Bear Books, Kingfisher Used Books and at the door.

In the court ruling it said, “The removal of $25,000 from band funds and the payment of $5,000 to each of the defendants was a clear and significant personal benefit to them, and them only. “As a one-time payment, it did not benefit future members of council or of the band. Rather, it was a detriment to the band. The conclusion seems to me to be inescapable that this was a breach of fiduciary duty, even in the context of a relatively informal and custom-based governance structure.” Robert Louie Jr., a one-time attorney who did the legal work on Wayne

“It was really close to Christy’s heart, as well,” said Groot. “She really wanted to be involved this year. She was gung ho until she had her stoke.” Cancer survivors are asked to wear yellow, and anyone wearing a Relay for Life shirt will be entered into a draw for a door prize. Volunteers have also collected river rocks, which can be turned into memory stones when painted with the names of those who have fought or are battling cancer. “It’s not just for people we’ve lost, but people who are fighting,” said Groot. As with the previous relay, all of the funds raised through this event are earmarked for the area, to help with travel, accommodations and medicine. “There are so many people in the area that are hit with cancer,” said Groot. “We just want people to know the cancer society is there to help them.”

Louie’s behalf, has also called for Jason Louie to step down as chief, “as a result of breaching his fiduciary duty and oath of office.” Wayne Louie expressed concern that Jason Louie used LKB money to defend himself in the court case, while he had to pay expenses out of his own pocket. “The chief flew to Vancouver to attend court and ate out on the band’s dime,” he said, “while I had to take a 15-hour bus ride and packed a sandwich. There’s something wrong with that picture.” Before both courts, the defendants argued that they had made no attempt to hide the payments and that they understood that the now-deceased band administrator would prepare the necessary documents and post them to make

LKB residents aware of the payments. Such documents were not produced, with Wayne Louie arguing they never existed and the defendants saying they were likely lost in a flood that ruined many band documents. Justice Mary V. Newbury wrote in her decision, with the concurrence of Justice S. David Frankel and Justice Harvey M. Groberman, “I would allow the appeal, grant Mr. Louie a declaration that the five personal defendants acted in breach of their fiduciary duties to the band in purporting to remunerate themselves to the extent of $5,000, and order that each is liable to disgorge the amount to the band. If the plaintiff wishes to pursue his claim for punitive damages, he may return to the court below.”

I took a morning walk on a recent Saturday, organizing my route so as to include a wander through the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market. I ordered breakfast and coffee from the Fork food truck and, while I was waiting, a friend happened by to join me. Not many better things to do on a beautiful day — sit and chat, enjoy a breakfast sammy and freshbrewed coffee. It did get better though. Did I know that a mutual friend was back in town, my friend (I’ll call him Joe, because that’s his name) asked. I didn’t and we decided to walk down to visit and deliver a treat Joe had bought. On the short trip I brought up the changes that the town is undergoing — a new and improved Pine Street intersection at Northwest Boulevard, the sale of the old Kootenay Hotel, new shops opening, more development plans on the west side of town, new houses at the top end of Devon Street. Joe put on his most curmudgeonly face and said he is in the late Wil Hudson’s camp. As Wil liked to say, “No change is for the good.” “I like change,” I said. For the last couple of months I have been routinely wandering over to check out the intersection construction, which will provide a perfect entrance into Creston from the west. When town councillors and Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce representatives visited businesses last month, many reported that the most common comment was in how beautiful the downtown core is looking. I was part of the revitalization committee that worked to plan a greening program that included bump-outs

at intersections to accommodate plantings. Trees were planted and the Cook Street parking lot was made more visually appealing. Now, a new chamber of commerce initiative has led to the

Lorne Eckersley addition of planters and chalkboard signs along downtown sidewalks. I love them and the added visual interest they create. Yes, parking-challenged drivers routinely bump into the one in front of the Advance office, but it moves easily and no damage has resulted. No harm, no foul. But the visuals are only part of the story. For the last year there has been more optimism downtown than I have felt in years. Lectric Avenue Electronics moved into a larger premises to accommodate Apple products, Doug and Darlene Vance opened a new furniture store, the addition of a shoe store has been welcomed, Black Bear Books attracted a new owner, smaller niche-market shops — where the future of local retail lies — have been added. The announcement of the purchase of Kootenay Hotel got huge attention on the Advance website and hope remains that the bunker development will happen. A lovely spruce-up of a 15th Avenue building to accommodate small shops has improved the area and last week, right across the

street, Bart and Alison Bjorkman opened the renovated former Dominion Auto Body building to display their Puffin Design creations and provide a workshop so customers can see what’s coming. Mayor Ron Toyota and I visited soon after its opening and we were suitably impressed. Afterward, we stopped in to check out the new toy department on the lower floor of Creston Card and Stationery. We were astonished by the wonderful selection and concluded there probably isn’t a better toy store in southeast B.C. The willingness by local entrepreneurs to invest in retail space and provide local consumers and visitors with added choices is undeniably a sign of optimism. A story in the Globe and Mail several months ago named Creston as one of Canada’s most desirable retirement destinations didn’t lead the way to these changes, but it no doubt served to boost a growing feeling that our future is bright. As we continue to see the diversification and growth of our local food production sector, we find ourselves in a unique position. With the right combination of infrastructure investment and entrepreneurship, fruit and vegetable farming and making value-added products will help drive the Creston Valley economy. Last week, Coun. Joe Snopek wrote in his column that we should take time to thank the people who hold public office. He’s right. But we should also make a similar effort for local entrepreneurs. They too deserve our thanks and support. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.

Be fully alive with Zen practice

In “Mountains and River Sutra”, 13th century Zen master Eihei Dogen said, “Because mountains and rivers have been active since before the empty eon they are alive at this moment. Because they have been the self since before form arose, they are emancipation and realization.” These two sentences are parallel expressions. The first one is about time; the second one is about space and matter that exists in space. Dogen is saying that mountains and rivers have always existed. They transcend time, and when they do appear in time, they are all inclusive. And this is true for us humans as well. We are much bigger than the self that we think we are. The essence of what we actually are existed before any entity ever existed, and because of that, our selfness, our selfhood, like the selfness and selfhood of mountains and waters is its own liberation, our own unique expression of absolute reality. In other words, we, like mountains and rivers, are not as limited as we appear to be. This is exactly the heart of Zen teaching. Like time and space, we have no boundaries. Our only boundaries are falsely created by beliefs and self-centred thinking

that result from societal and cultural conditioning. So often we make the mistake of thinking that this moment isn’t really all that important. But for Dogen, all of time is here, right

A Zen'sEye View Kuya Minague now. Everything is complete in this moment: this little life, this little person that comes and goes so quickly and is able to accomplish so little between birth and death contains everything in the entire universe. All of space and time is right here in the destiny of this one life. That is Dogen’s astounding statement. It’s hard to feel this in the nitty gritty of the daily grind, but when we go into the mountains we feel it. This is why most of us love to go into the mountains. If we lace up our hiking boots, strap on a backpack with food and tent, and walk for two or three days on a mountain trail, we

will eventually feel this union with all of time and space. The Chinese people knew this. The monks in China would walk many hundreds of miles and travel from one monastery to another. They never had, like in the Christian monastic tradition, the practice of staying cloistered in one monastery. Chinese Chan (Zen) monks believed that religious practice is a life of wandering in the mountains. They would enroll in one monastery, stay for a few years for basic training and then go walking in the mountains for months at a time. Some lived in isolated mountain hermitages for decades. Suggested practice: Take some time to walk in the mountains. Learn about the hiking groups in Creston and join them on a mountain hike. While there, separate from the chatter and bring your awareness to the feeling of boundlessness of the mountains, the rivers and of your own life. Kuya Minogue is the resident teacher at Sakura-ji, Creston’s zendo. This column is part of a long essay on an essay by 13th century Zen master Eihei Dogen and is inspired by the teaching of Norman Fishcher. Warm weather brings aphids, mites to gardens Early June. The air is warm and sweet with the blossoms of Russian olive trees and grapevines. Sitting on my nicely shaded sun deck, the fragrance of the Concord grapes takes me back to

when we had so many aphids around. There are blue ones, green ones, black ones and red ones. They seem to be on everything from the fruit trees to the perennials and the roses. Aphids don’t lay eggs, so one thorough treatment of Safer soap should knock them down. The soap dries their skin out soon after contact. It works well, so long as you don’t spray your plants on a hot and sunny day. The soapsuds can magnify the sun’s rays and actually Evan Davies burn the plant leaves. You my childhood. Better sidewalk needed To the Editor: The town must be aware of how many residents are handicapped or elderly, with motorized devices for shopping. Many live below the tracks and only have access to shops downtown via Cedar Street and the paved trail behind Extra Foods. It is pretty well impossible to get up the stairs by Cresteramics or the stairs leading up from Gleaners. On Railway Boulevard, there is a narrow dirt pathway on the south side of the curb, which is well worn. I’m pretty sure this has been developed by walkers or bicycles in an attempt to keep off the road. The new intersection and sidewalks at Pine Street and Northwest Boulevard are excellent. However, the sidewalk stops at the railroad track. There is no way a scooter, wheelchair or baby carriage can get up or down past that point. Well, those with a strong will to take a life-threatening risk can (and do) get on the road instead, rather than going

all the way to Cedar Street. This is very dangerous. I realize it is way too narrow to put a new sidewalk in there as is. Could the road be made a wee bit wider on the north side so that a sidewalk could be built on the south side? That way, two vehicles plus a scooter, wheelchair or carriage all on the road at the same time will be much safer. Eunice Burke Creston

Canada is unique, beautiful To the Editor: When Margaret Thatcher was prime minister of the United Kingdom from May 4, 1979-Nov. 28, 1990, she completely transformed her country in her image, for the better, in those 11-and-a-half years that she was in power. After 25 years, her conservative philosophy and legacy are still very much relevant today. I can also vividly recall when Ronald Reagan was elected as the 40th president of the United States on Nov. 4,

picture of a greenhouse plant someone had emailed me. They had mites in their greenhouse. To deal with the mites, you need three successive sprays every five days if the average temp is 21 C, but if it is warmer three sprays every three days are required. Cooler temps call for weekly treatments. As you may or may not be aware, insect growth is directly related to heat units built up from day to day. The faster the heat units accumulate, the earlier we see the pests. Many caterpillar-type insects are out this time of year too. BTK is another natural product that will control this kind of pest, like leaf rollers and tent caterpillars. It is applied to the foliage and when ingested by the caterpillar it kills them and only them. Using these kind of soft pest control products helps give the bees a little better chance. 1980. It is hard to believe that it was 35 years ago, as it seems like it was just yesterday to me! Mr. Reagan is my favourite president of all time, and like Mrs. Thatcher, his legacy continues to influence U.S. politics 26 years after leaving office in 1989. However, that being said, my mind, heart, and soul will always belong to the motherland of Canada. She truly is a very unique and beautiful lady; we all love her greatly. So, on July 1, I urge everyone to come (whatever your heritage may be) and celebrate our nation’s 148th birthday — not to mention the legacy of our first prime minster, Sir John A. MacDonald. Incidentally, my birthday happens to be today; I am now 56 years old — imagine that! In conclusion, it is now 130 days until our 42nd federal election on Oct. 19 (but I guess you knew that) and when I write my next letter in September, I will share my philosophy, innermost thoughts and emotions with you regarding this upcoming historic event. Until then, take care, always think positively, be optimistic, have faith in the Lord and remember that there are angels who walk the Earth, which keep you safe. Have a great summer! So if the insects are all early this year, what about the tree fruit in the orchards? Last year, my earliest cherries were picked about the July 10. Chelan is the variety and I have about 16 trees as a trial. They are six years old and loaded up with fruit.

My guess is that if I can keep the birds out of them, I’ll have fruit for Canada Day. There is always something to keep you on your toes — this year the bugs have arrived early. Evan Davies owns Beltane Nursery at 2915 Highway 3 in Erickson.

Tips to keep in mind breaking out into the out there

At this time of year, enthusiasm runs high for many forms of recreational activity out in the fresh spring air, close by and farther away. Even those who maintain some form of physical activity through out the winter season look

forward to the time when ice, snow and clothing-donning weather are gone and not just around the corner. The winter-free spring and summer are enhanced by pleasant sound effects, such as bird calls, insect sounds and babbling brooks,

and a change in scenery, of grays and browns to verdant green dappled with splashes of color in gardens and along woodland trails. Making outings enjoyable, effective and safe may seem an easy thing to do for many, including experienced recreationists, and even for the inexperienced ones. However, in whatever category we put ourselves, we are vulnerable to forget or not take certain factors into account because we are unfamiliar with some aspect of the activity. A couple of times in past years, I have forgotten or neglected to take insect repellant because it didn’t occur to me that just because there were no mosquitoes here didn’t mean that those bothersome insects weren’t out there and looking for a host. I must say the expeditions turned out to be quite a “chore”, to say the least. Some conditions that make life easy for mosquitoes are warmth and humidity, and no wind or rain. The best rule is to take the dope even though you don’t think you need it. Weather in these Kootenay mountains, like any other mountain systems, can be quite variable, changing considerably in a few hours or being quite different from where we start the outing. Checking the forecast for the area in which one is hiking, or whatever, is an essential; however, forecasts have limitations. In the valley it may be shirt-sleeve and shorts weather, hot and calm, so not thinking, one goes roaring up to the top of Mount Thompson only to find it uncomfortably cool and windy. In five minutes of being out in the fresh mountain air, it’s time to get in the vehicle and head back down. So when heading up, go prepared for cooler temperatures and perhaps, sometimes, for even a bit of a shower. Being unprepared may mean missing out on an enjoyable hike or lunch or both.

Dogs of our Lives What would our lives be like without dogs? As Your Hometown Vet we love canines of all shapes and sizes!

I have noticed that often when it is a bit cloudy locally, the weather can be much more cloudier and even rain higher up and farther north, like around Sphinx Mountain or in the Jumbo, Kokanee Glacier and Monica Meadows areas. One soaking can terminate a hike, camping trip or overnighter quite quickly. If that happens in the morning, one may dry out during the remainder of the day, especially if the sun comes out. But if it happens late in the day of an overEd McMackin nighter and there isn’t time to hike out, those that didn’t have raingear probably wouldn’t be described as happy campers. It makes no sense to spoil a hiking or outdoor experience by going unprepared, from head to toe! Some may think it funny, but there have been instances where a hiker only survived hypothermia because they were gently forced to spend the night with someone else in their sleeping bag. It isn’t hard to dampen the hope of another outing. There is a balance that experienced hikers and, for that matter, even walkers try to reach between taking enough supplies for the outing and keeping the pack as light as possible. Where that balance is depends on the individual’s needs and or wants. It’s a good idea to take a little extra food on an outing but some who eat a lot take a lot of food; sometimes they end up packing it out, I hope. Some people eat light. Besides adequate clothing and food, other stuff is taken to meet the demands of the outing. Some pack equipment, such as binoculars, camera and journal for preserving memories of the trip and also bear spray, stowed in the pack isn’t going to be much use. By the time you get whatever it is out, the big mule deer buck, a memory of the beauty or the rest of the group has high-tailed it out of there, except for the bear! Just kidding! Also, remember there isn’t a bear behind every tree!

An adult black cicada is one of many forms of wildlife out there.

Then there may be matches, knife, sleeping bag and pad, tent, mosquito coils or the like, a lightweight stove, dried food and so on, depending on what is needed. Some may eliminate the stove and just eat dried food. Others take a tent just to provide protection from the only mountain predator — mosquitoes. Some trails have plenty of streams for replenishing the water containers, but some mountain slopes are dry, so fill the containers and the body. There are other things to consider in regard to making an outing enjoyable and safe. What is needed depends on when and where you go. I suggest researching the topic to pick up on what I haven’t covered. Ed McMackin is a biologist by profession but a naturalist and hiker by nature. He can be reached at 250-866-5747.

is a rehabilitation facility that houses and provides programs for men with alcohol and drug addictions. It currently houses between 25 and 28 men in conditions Canadians would consider uninhabitable. The facility has no running water and about half the building has a dirt floor with no roof. The need there is great and they have a

vision to expand the facility to house 100 men. The Creston Baptist Church is sending another team to Ensenada in November. The goal is to start Phase 1 of the renovations and additions to the Espigas Nuevas building. In addition, some of the women on the team will serve in a women’s rehabilitation facility, an orphanage and a school for underprivileged children. There will also be continuing development of garden plantings done under the guidance of Lloyd Morris from Morris Flowers.

Fundraising for the project is now underway and all money raised will be used for the project. Bottle drives, soup lunches at the church and garage sales will be held over the summer and fall to raise the funds needed. Beads, wire, embroidery floss and other jewelry-making materials are some of the items required to help the people there learn to provide for themselves. Moving Along Together Week 7 Enhancing Physical Wellness

Our weekly sessions at TAPS for this program are attended by people affected by memory changes and their family caregivers. We use the “By Us for Us” Guides published through the University of Waterloo by the Murray Alzheimer Research and Education Program as points of discussion chosen by the participants. We’re offering a few ideas and resources in these columns for your information, for family, friends and loved ones. Information will be posted on the Valley Community Services website. This is meant to complement any information available through other sources and stimulate discussion. Research has a long way to go in determining definitively all the factors and connections of the positive results of physical activity on cognitive and memory changes. Yet reports consistently support the idea that being more active has enough benefits to make it part of our lifestyle. Amongst other findings, physical activity seems to have the capacity to take advantage of brain plasticity, detected at molecular and cellular levels in lab studies. Whether you are fit, or affected by stamina, flexibility and mobility issues, this does not preclude you from being able to benefit from being active. Consider the simple physical activities such as walking, mowing the lawn, weeding, biking, or laundry as just some regular of the things you might already be doing. Adding more of these or similiar activities or doing them more often may result in some of these benefits: • Reduced risk of depression • Provide a sense of social psychological and emotional

well being • Help maintain a healthy weight • Lower blood pressure and cholesterol •Help you sleep better Consider these things to enhance your physical wellbeing: (Consult your doctor before starting a new exercise routine): - Walking up and down stairs at home can provide an easy and inexpensive cardio workout. - Swimming and aquafit classes are low impact, easy on joints and an opportunity to socialize. - Dancing checks off three benefits: physical activity, memorizing and socialization. - Tai Chi or Yoga are both forms of relaxation, as well as mental stimulation and physical activity. During our Moving Along Together Program we went for walks together outside and at the Creston & District Community Complex. We met with Tia, a fitness instructor who had folks of all different abilities moving to music, playing games and laughing all the way to the gym. Folks tried out different equipment there, and were encouraged to relax, go slow, check in with their bodies and do a variety of activities rather than a lot of any one thing. They were encouraged to pay attention to how their bodies felt, take breaks and stop when they needed to. Tai Chi is an ongoing program at TAPS as well as other classes around town. Anyone wanting to check out our program at TAPS can call and talk with Bridget about the Tuesday class. Tai Chi is considered by some to be a perfect exercise for the benefits experienced by those who do it. Check local seniors’ clubs, and businesses offering activities that suit your needs. If you’re over 85, did you know that the Creston & District Community Complex offers you free access and they have senior rates for membership? We left two Rebus Puzzles at the end of last week’s column. Did you figure out the phrases from the clues? 1. momanon= man in the moon and 2. DEAL= Big Deal. Obituaries Lois “Anne” Gris August 31, 1936 ~ May 28, 2015

In the early morning hours of Thursday, May 28, 2015, Lois “Anne” Gris passed away peacefully at the Joseph Creek Care Village in Cranbrook at the age of 78 years. Anne was born in Mission, BC on August 31, 1936 to Gordon and Millicent Ferguson. Anne was an incredible musician and she loved to share her music with others. She taught piano for many years and touched the lives of so many with that talent. She graduated with highest honours from the Royal Conservatory of Music Canada becoming a gold medalist concert pianist. Both mom and dad enjoyed music. Dad taught at the Prince Charles Secondary School and when the school burned down, they were instrumental in setting up the Creston Concert Society, La Musica and the Creston Children’s Choir. Mom played for all the musicals in the drama department at the school. When Anne lived in Kamloops, she taught many students, but one stood out for her than the rest. This young student came from a poor family and in order to practice the piano, the family drew a cardboard drawing of the piano keyboard for her. When Anne left Kamloops, she didn’t want this young girl to lose the natural talent she had so she gave her a Baldwin upright piano so she could continue on with her training. This act sums up her love of music and her thought that everyone should be able to achieve their dreams through music. Mom will now be joining Dad and be reunited once again to carry on their music.

Anne leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Nancy (Mike) Briggs; three grandchildren: Gordon (Brittany), Christopher and Brian (Melanie) Potyok and one great grandson, Jamison. Also left to mourn her are her stepgrandchildren: Cody Briggs and Patti (Shawn) Eckman and one greatgranddaughter, Jessie; also her loving sister and childhood trouble maker Freda (George) Bennett. She leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and her special friends: Donna (Earl) Clay, and her lifelong friend Gaye Olfert. Anne was predeceased by her beloved husband Chester; her sister Judy and her parents. A private family graveside service will be held. Memorial donations may be made in Anne’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, 19 – 9 th Ave. S., Cranbrook, BC V1C 2L9. Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com. A very special thank you to the RNs and RCAs in St. Marys’ pod of Joseph Creek Care Village for your kindness to mom while she resided there with you, as well as to Dr. Witten. It was appreciated more than words can say. Mark Memorial Funeral Services in care of arrangements (250) 426-4864

SPORTS

CRESTON GOLF CLUB

As well as a $10,000 prize for a hole-in-one on the 10th hole, tight contesting for prizes at every level made this year’s Blossom Open Golf Tournament one to remember. First, congratulations to Bryan “Ace” Smithson, who won the hole-in-one prize sponsored by Western Financial Group and Doug Vance. The odds for his hole-in-one, according to Golf Digest, are more than 5,000 to 1. The first exciting event was the men’s championship won by Abbotsford’s Trent Mayer, with a scratch handicap. The 22-year-old Mayer combined power off the tee with a fine putting touch, two qualities that will serve him well in his future plans in the world of pro golf. The local challenge came from 20-year-old Karson O’Keefe, the son of Brian and Janet O’Keefe, with a similar handicap. He was one stroke behind after the first 18 but fought back to even for holes 5, 6 and 7 on the front nine. However Mayer, in spite of a bogey on the last hole, won by two strokes. The ladies’ event was even more hotly contested. Cherie Baker, the perennial champion, was challenged this year by Leslie Harbison, Joyce Johnson and Ruth Hoffman. Baker was one up on her opposition after the 35th hole, but in a dramatic finish, Hoffman birdied the 36th hole to tie, but lost the playoff to Baker’s par. Mayer was also part of a unique scenario. For the first time in the history of the club in an open tournament, there was a representative from three generations — his father, Duane, uncle, Brad, and grandfather, Bill. The latter not only played in the tournament but carried off a prize in the third flight. Bill, probably the club’s oldest

Students clean up at Duck Lake clean, birds, fish, turtles, caterpillars, ducks, geese — and the list goes on — are kept clean and healthy. That means there are fresh drinking water and healthy fish to eat. Then students busied themselves picking up metal, aluminum cans, rusted nails, shotgun shells, plastic, more plastic and cigarette butts that laced the sides of the dike. It was a warm, beautiful, sunny day — filled with students making the world an even more beautiful, healthy place!
