Cheeseball crowd-pleaser CELEBRATES SCIENCE FICTION

Kootenay filmmaker describes project as ‘Evil Dead 2 meets Pirate Radio in space’ WILL JOHNSON West Kootenay Advertiser

Kootenay-raised filmmaker Chris Shalom describes his fourth feature film Space Rippers as “Evil Dead 2 meets Pirate Radio in space.” Set in a future where illegal torrenting has been eradicated from Earth, the full-length movie tells the story of media pirate astronauts who face down a soul-sucking witch they inadvertently released from an infamous cursed DVD. “It has those elements of camp and cheese from the 80s,” Shalom told the Advertiser. “We’re using the term space-ploitation.” Scheduled to start filming in August, Space Rippers is

in the midst of an IndieGogo campaign to help raise the $20,000 it’s going to take to make it a reality. Along with his co-director J.S. Johnson, who Shalom met in film school, he’s hoping that this project will differ significantly from their earlier collaborations. “Our first three California Balloon films were quiet and artsy. Very slow, kind of Polanski-Hitchcock-Kubrick-style supernatural thrillers. Now we’re moving in a direction that’s a little bigger, and we’re going for more of a fun crowd-pleaser type of movie.” (Their previous films, with memorable names such as Android Night Punch, are available for free online.) Shalom said the funds raised will primarily go towards building a spaceship and doing “cool gore stuff ”. Ultimately he wants supporters to end up with a physical copy of the film in their hands. “Space Rippers, ironically, is the first time we’re going to try to sell a movie. We want people to be able to have a physical copy of

it,” he said. He likes to imagine one day that someone might find a VHS of Rippers at a garage sale. Shalom has a passion for the analog era, and in many ways he’s trying to embrace oldschool filmmaking techniques. “We’re using miniatures to do the space ship shots. We’ve got wires to do zero gravity. We’re trying to physically do it exactly the way they would have done it in analog times.” The film will be shot in Calgary. The Mt. Sentinel grad took an opportunity to mention his high school teacher Heather Shippit, who taught the first filmmaking class at his high school and encouraged him to pursue his film ambitions. As of press time, Rippers had raised just over $1000 of its $10,000 goal. The prizes for contributing include VHS versions of their earlier features and a ticket to the film premiere. You can also get an executive producer credit. For more information visit Space Rippers on Indiegogo.

Trail art gallery welcomes new artistic director Sheri regnier West Kootenay Advertiser

Salmo artist Joe Horvath has a lifetime of art to offer for VISAC Gallery’s last show of the season. But the seasoned artist’s exhibit is a first for Kristen Renn, the Trail gallery’s new artistic director. Originally from the U.S., she has an extensive history in art culture extending from Seattle, San Francisco and Salt Lake City. Now hailing from Rossland, Renn brings youthful energy and unique vision to the nonprofit space. “We are in a transition of a new exhibition this week, and the passing of the torch is going smoothly,” said Renn, referring the Ursula Abresch’s retirement from the position. “I think the VISAC has created a really good pillar and bone of infrastructure within Trail,” she said. “Ursula has really raised the bar bringing in different, interesting exhibits. At first this was a place for people who do have an interest in the art world to collaborate and feel a sense of belonging,” Renn added. “Now I feel they are more interested in spreading the culture instead of just maintaining it. That is my hope with the gallery – to bring in new people and support new artists as well as the established ones.” An artist herself, one of Renn’s goals is to create an arts culture hub at the site, which is located in the basement of the Selkirk College campus in Trail. “I use the word hub a lot,” she explained. “That means showing art, displaying art, supporting local new and older artists starting with Trail and surrounding towns as our main focus, then the basin, then the Kootenays.” Another goal she has is to schedule many more work-

shops in the gallery after a little makeover of the space. “I plan on doing a little revamping to create and atmosphere of creativity that welcomes new and older to get together,” said Renn. “It’s a public space so I want to see it become an interesting meeting spot. It’s quite a big space and we can show a lot of different medias like 3D tangible art, fibre arts and art made from up-cycled things. I don’t like to use the word “trend” but it is (trending) right now. It’s approachable art and becoming more and more popular, which is fun.” Her mantra is that while art can be intimidating to some, it’s not exclusive to a certain clique. “This is a club and a space that everyone can come to and feel welcome, as well as utilize for art.” Currently showing until July 3 is Joe Horvath’s “A Life of Painting and Drawing” exhibit of 28 oil paintings and pencilled sketches. After decades of painting and drawing, selling an original isn’t about the money for Joe. Instead, it’s about sharing his eye for natural landscapes with others who value the artist’s vision. “That’s nice when someone buys one, but I don’t get excited,” said Horvath, a long time member and past president of the Trail Art Club. “Because I never do anything to make money. It’s really nice to do for a hobby, and I try to make it better all the time.” Born in Mosonmagyaróvár, Hungary, Horvath studied art in his native city before immigrating to Canada in 1957. Landing on the east coast shore, pursuing art wasn’t in the picture for the first few years when Horvath took a job on southern Ontario’s railroad line. After toiling 10-hour days,

six days a week for a 90-cent paycheque, the young man joined a friend and moved northeast to work the mines in scenic Val-d’Or, Quebec. It was in that city, Horvath could further his creative education while studying commercial art. Though he’s continued to nurture his artistic talent over five decades, Horvath said putting brush to canvas wasn’t a means of raising six children alongside Dolly, his wife of 57 years. “I couldn’t make a living at it because my family is six, and you have to have plenty of money to put on the table,” he said. But that didn’t stop Horvath from painting on the side as well as taking on a few commissioned pieces. “Art is not something he chooses to do,” said Dolly. “He has art inside him so it is something he has to do.” Horvath has been part of the Trail art scene since the family relocated to Salmo in 1972. He commuted from the village to Trail for 24 years before retiring from Cominco. Now, he runs Joe’s Art Gallery on a 26-acre property located just outside Salmo on Highway 3. “We’ve been open for about four years now,” said Joe. “And over 300 people have signed our guest book. People from Switzerland sent me a letter saying it was a nice place. And I’ve had people in from Vancouver Island to New Zealand.” Besides running his gallery, Horvath often visits VISAC, teaching watercolour pencil drawing workshops the third Saturday of each month. The interactive sessions focus on sketching techniques, and are open to beginners, advanced artists and everyone in between. “Doesn’t make any difference (level of art) because I have the layout for everybody,”

said Horvath. “Even if you miss something one day you can make it better the next time, that’s why it’s advancing.” He encourages all level of talent to give the class a try, because learning how to draw gives a sense of accomplishment and boosts self esteem. “You come in and sit down and you will learn something the first workshop,” he explained. “If you do something that was no good one year and keep coming back – you will see how far you can come (the next) year.” The drop-in fee is $25 for a three-hour morning lesson, but Horvath donates all proceeds back to the gallery. “I give my time to VISAC,” he said. “Anything we make is for them, something like a fundraiser.” VISAC Gallery will close July 4 following Horvath’s show. The space re-opens in September with “Atomic Sculptures,” and exhibition by Howard Roo. For information, contact the gallery at 364.1181 or director@visacgallery.com.

Kettle River was first known as Nehoialpitku GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser

Ninety-ninth in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names The Kettle River was named by July 31, 1860 when the Victoria Daily Colonist quoted a New Westminster Times report about gold being found “on all the tributaries of the Okinakin [sic] Rock Creek, Kettle River, and Semilkameen [sic] in paying quantities.” There are a couple of theories about the name’s origin. As G.P.V. and Helen Akrigg put it in British Columbia Place Names, one possibility is that it “comes from the boiling, seething Kettle Falls, which were known as La Chaudiére [The Boiler] to early explorers.” Alternatively, it comes from “the round holes, shaped like cauldrons, which water has hollowed out in the rocks.” Hudson’s Bay Co. governor George Simpson gave the latter explanation in 1847, according to the Akriggs, although they didn’t say where. The river, and its valley, was previously known by the Okanagan name Nehoialpitku, according to Lt. Charles Wilson of the British Boundary Commission, who wrote on Aug. 31, 1860: “We started for to continue our journey to Colville and passing throughout he town of Rock Creek followed down the stream of the Nehoialpitku. Oh! Valley of the Nehoialpitku, how shall I sing thy praises!” (The name is otherwise written as nxwya?łpítkw. Colonial secretary Arthur

Three years after the Kettle River post office opened in 1892, residents petitioned for a name change, feeling Kettle River was too general, since there were many settlements along it. So it was renamed Carson in 1896 and operated until 1915. The north fork of the Kettle River became known as the Granby after the Granby Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Granby, Que. which built a smelter at Grand Forks in 1900. The name was officially adopted by the Geographic Board of Canada on March 31, 1915. The name Kettle Valley, meanwhile, dates to the creation of the Kettle Valley Railway Co. in early 1898. Kettle Valley, the community just east of Rock Creek, dates to before 1913, when the post office opened. It closed in 1975. What’s strange at first glance, however, is that instead of taking its name from the Kettle, the district came to be known for a tributary, Boundary Creek. We’ll look at this in greater detail next week.

Two Kootenay MPs were disappointed to learn that upgrades they hoped would make access to the airport in Castlegar more reliable are a long way off. Chris Stedile photo

Airport upgrades not so simple

Improving the reliability of West Kootenay’s regional airport isn’t going to be as easy as first thought. BC Southern Interior MP Alex Atamanenko and Kootenay Columbia MP David Wilks recently met with an Air Canada vice-president, believing that joining forces would emphasize how important improved air access is to the area. However, they were dismayed to learn that that the technology they were hoping would be the answer isn’t likely to arrive anytime soon. “David and I were told that Air Canada needs a developed required navigation performance system

for departure as well as for landing before even considering sending their Q400 [aircraft] to Castlegar,” Atamanenko said. Required navigation performance approaches allow aircraft to follow precise three-dimensional curved flight paths through congested airspace, around noise-sensitive areas, or through difficult terrain. This system could effectively halve the present required visibility threshold of 3,000 feet. But Atamanenko said it’s much more complicated than he and others believed.

ary School and Stanley Humphries School in Castlegar, and officials want parents to know that some unsanctioned events can be harmful. Last week, School District 20 (SD20) sent a letter addressed to the parents of high school students, warning them about unapproved grad weekend events, like the camp out, grad parties where alcohol is being served and hazing with wooden paddles. J.L. Crowe Principal David DeRosa, says while there was no specific event that prompted the writing of the letter, the school’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC) had received some complaints from community members leading up to the big weekend. “Our PAC received formal letters from concerned parents talking specifically about the paddling,” he said, mentioning that there have been reports of graduating students using wooden paddles to hit younger students as a sort of initiation. “That was new to me, but we wanted to emphasize it. We (at the school and district) had a good conversation about it and we felt that the time was right to let the community know

sponsibility,” he said. “But, they are our kids. That is how I look at it. I want to do whatever I can to keep them safe and have a happy and successful grad. They need to know that some of these things aren’t appropriate. We are hoping that letter to parents brings up a conversation. Some of our teachers have told me that some of the younger kids have been asking about (paddling and the camp out).” It isn’t just the parents that are getting the message. Students have been, and will be, reminded of the same rules before grad weekend arrives. Even younger students who will be going through the graduation process next year are included in the discussion. “We meet with the Grade 11 students at this time of year and tell them now that Grad 2015 is wrapping up, it will be their turn,” said DeRosa. “We start the oneyear countdown. We just want to remind them of the district code of conduct and our expectations. Teachers are reiterating the message in classrooms, but that is not formal. We talk about safety as our primary concern.”

that we don’t support it, and in fact, we don’t want it.” The letter told parents that hazing younger students with a paddle would be seen as assault with a weapon, and the offending students could face action from the RCMP if reported. Students who are found to have participated in the hazing will “lose the privilege of participating in the graduations ceremony and citizenship-related scholarships and bursaries.” The letter also addresses the long-standing student tradition of going on a grad “camp out,” where in the past, there has been heavy drinking and safety concerns. Parents were informed that students who arrive at school the day after the camp out smelling of alcohol and wood smoke will be sent home, as outlined in the district code of conduct. DeRosa says that by sending out the letter ahead of grad, the district and schools are getting in front of the issue and hopes it starts some family discussions. “Historically, we have said that these things are not associated with us, so it wasn’t our re-

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23

Aries, assess a situation before acting. Only then can you have a clear view and map out an appropriate course of action. Find a friend who can help with your plan.

Happy times are on the horizon, Libra. You just have to make it through a few more obstacles before you can reach the finish line and relax.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22

Taurus, relationships are challenging but well worth the effort. Nurture an existing relationship and do your best to see things through the other’s perspective.

Scorpio, when it rains it pours, but this week there is not a cloud in sight. Enjoy the next several days as everything seems to be going your way and turning up roses.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21

Gemini, a hectic week makes it hard to keep track of all the things you need to get done in the coming days. Focusing on being organized will go a long way.

Sagittarius, provide some support and encouragement when a friend comes to you for help in the coming days. Just being there to listen might be all your friend needs.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, solutions to a difficult problem become more clear when you take a break and find a new perspective. This break is just what you need to crack that egg.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, others are looking to you for advice, so do your best to provide thoughtful suggestions. Your point of view and demeanor make others very trusting of your advice.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 The only person who can help you this week is you, Virgo. Be optimistic and trust your instincts as you tackle the tasks at hand over the next several days.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Things are completely out of your hands this week, Capricorn. While you thought you would feel helpless, the experience may actually prove liberating for you instead.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, you have some time off coming up and you can’t wait to make the most of this downtime. Start making your list of planned excursions.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 A helping hand will help you get out of a sticky situation, Pisces. You are lucky to have this person on your side.

The Big Bike is a specially designed bike that can be ridden by up to 30 people together, and is used by the Heart & Stroke Foundation in communities across Canada to raise funds and awareness of this important cause. In addition, AM Ford also hosted a special fundraiser throughout May, donating $25 to the Foundation for every vehicle sold during the month. The combined fundraising efforts raised a total of $2,100 for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. “AM Ford is a proud supporter of the Heart & Stroke Foundation. We’re delighted to help raise much needed funds for heart disease and stroke research and bring awareness to our local community about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle,” says Dan Ashman, Dealer Principal of AM Ford. Selkirk College graduated more than 750 students in a variety of different diploma and certificate programs this past April. With a balanced budget heading into the coming fiscal year, the educational opportunities and mission of lifelong learning will continue to flourish in our region. Selkirk College photo

Selkirk College Board of Governors green lights balanced budget Selkirk College will move into the next fiscal year with a balanced budget after receiving approval from its Board of Governors earlier this month. After months of hard work by administration and staff, the 2015-2016 Selkirk College budget was passed at the June 2 board meeting. The college can now proceed with its $43.1 million budget that represents expenditures in the West Kootenay-Boundary region that have an overall direct and indirect economic impact of $200 million. “The Board of Governors appreciates how difficult the budget process can be,” says Board Chair Bruce Morrison. “Selkirk College is a vital part of our region and in light of all the fiscal challenges faced, everyone involved in putting forward this balanced budget did an excellent job of ensuring students will continue to be well served.” Provincial government grants through the Ministry of Advanced Education and the Industry Training Authority represent $27.9 milBRUCE MORRISON lion—or about 65 per cent—of the college’s budget. The remainder of the revenue is derived from tuition, ancillary service sales, contracts and applied research activity. All provincial grant monies go directly toward the operation of credentialed program delivery to maximize return on taxpayer investment. “The Selkirk College budget is a very complex process that reflects our desire to provide stu-

dents with the highest quality of education in an impressive range of programs,” says Selkirk College President Angus Graeme. “Our challenge is to ensure we allocate the right resources in the right place, while always looking at how we might do our work more efficiently and effectively.” The budget was balanced despite a 1.35 per cent reduction of provincial operating grant. Higher enrolments this year and further growth expected next year in both domestic and international students helped mitigate this impact and has allowed for plans to expand in program areas in high demand. Tuition rates were increased by two per cent for domestic students, the maximum allowed under government policy. International tuition was increased by four per cent. The Board also approved the budget for capital maintenance projects worth an additional $1.6 million from the province to address maintenance priorities at its facilities across the region. The college continues to advocate to the province for a major capital investment for the renovation of the trades-based Silver King Campus in Nelson. “It’s always a monumental achievement to balance a $43 million operation and I’m grateful for our competent staff and leaders who do this work,” says Graeme. “Selkirk College is such an integral part of the West Kootenay Boundary landscape. The budget has to reflect the best use of resources for the delivery of educational services to our students and communities.” The college finished the 2014/2015 fiscal year on target with no deficits or surpluses.

Selkirk College is a vital part of our region and in light of all the fiscal challenges faced, everyone involved in putting forward this balanced budget did an excellent job.

News Building peace, social justice and equality BC Southern Interior Peace Coalition Conference: May 30 With a beautiful prayer, a Metis elder welcomed delegates from Kelowna to Slocan City and all points in between to the B.C. Southern Interior Peace Coalition conference in Grand Forks on May 30. The Slavonic Senior Citizens Centre opened its doors for the day-long conference of the 30-plus-year-old B.C. Southern Interior Peace Coalition (BCSIPC). Twice a year we gather plans collective actions on local and global issues and discuss our mutual concerns. We pledged to work more closely together because we have a common goal for a world of honour, harmony and peace with all creation.

We further resolved that Canada cut funding to countries and organizations involved in war and the violation of human rights. Canadian Foreign Policy

Our discussions are at times sad at the ongoing war mentality but sometimes in joy for the positive activities that lead to humanizing and empowering the people of the world to live in peaceful harmony. Sadly, this time there was precious little to celebrate, except the growing numbers of people recognizing the role government and corporations play in poverty, violence and perpetrating paralyzing fear. To that end we unanimously passed the following motion reflecting our deep concern of the repercussions of Bill C-51 and an ever more militarized Canadian Foreign Policy: “Be it resolved that Canada adopt a foreign policy without military alliances, which would mean withdrawing from NATO—presently the biggest

threat to peace. And we further resolved that Canada cut funding to countries and organizations involved in war and the violation of human rights.” We also resolved that Canada work for a culture of peace, nuclear disarmament, relieving poverty and promoting international understanding, in a nonviolent way. Regrets for not being able to join us were received from MLA Linda Larson, MLA Katrine Conroy, NDP candidate for South Okanagan-West Kootenay Dick Cannings, Canadian Boat to Gaza representative from Vernon and Vancouver, individuals from Creston, Cawston, Peachland and Kelowna. MP Alex Atamanenko joined us but left to attend Alice Glanville’s memorial service as did Christine Thompson, who represented the City of Grand Forks. Along with all-day snacks we served a borscht lunch. Bread and fruit tarts were generously donated by the USCC, individuals brought baking and the rest was provided by the Boundary Peace Initiative. Volunteers stepped forward to set up, take on kitchen duty, facilitate, take notes and then of course there is take down and clean up. We are so grateful to all who contributed to make this another successful gathering. In the morning we heard reports on activities since our last conference. All do what they can in their communities to educate and share knowledge of the issues destroying our world. From demonstrations to letters to the editor, from petitions and letters to MPs, MLAs and other elected officials to supporting and endorsing global actions, from participating with local groups to sharing energy with contacts worldwide, all involved consistently give freely of their time and energy to reach our mutual goal. And activities reflected that commitment. The BCSIC has been a member of the Canadian Peace Alliance (CPA) for many, many years. We’re fortunate to have two people in our area who were involved in the very founding of the umbrella organization in 1986.

Unfortunately, some years ago the CPA ran into financial difficulties with the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) for not making the required employee payments and has been unable to resolve them. In 2014 CRA froze the bank account pending full payment of the debt. The BSCIPC has repeatedly asked for regular official financial statements for at least the last four years, but sadly none were provided. Our representative provided a stack of email requests from the last year that yielded no results. Although we agree with the political and social justice mandate of the CPA it is vital that an organization be financially accountable to its membership and donor base to be fully functional. Therefore, the BCSIPC passed a motion to withdraw our membership in the CPA. The day passed very quickly as our discussions became passionate as well as inspiring. We all agreed that for Canada to once again be a respected and honourable “peace broker” we must work to change our government to one less focussed on creating fear in order to further militarize our country and continually be at war. Arising out of these two very vital topics that do and will continue to erode our civil liberties and human rights in Canada as well as globally, we passed the motion cited above. All in all we had an inspiring and enlightening conference from beginning to end. As is our practice we meet on a rotation basis, so our fall conference will be hosted by the Kootenay groups in Nelson. We wished all a safe journey home, whether travelling near or far. We take this opportunity to thank all our supporters and encourage those who have not yet done so, to contact your local peace group, participate in a rally, a demonstration, a forum. Get involved to help build the critical mass that will turn the tide from a “military/corporate/ industrial complex” who’s aim is to have power and control over the majority, into a world of peace with equality, true social and economic justice, environmental sustainability and love for and of our global family.

Community Miss Castlegar crowned at Sunfest The wonderful girls of 2015’s Miss Castlegar Pageant took to the streets on their float — nearly as lovely — to greet the regulars and visitors at Sunfest. The pageant took place the night before with Tenysha Ross-Van Mierlo being crowned Miss Castlegar and Tyanna Esovoloff receiving the title of Castlegar Princess. The two girls will serve as ambassadors to other neighbouring and far-off communities for the following year. A fond farewell to previous royalty, Sophie Jansen and Alexanderia D’Onofrio.
