A coalition of parents is asking the Nanaimo school board to put its decision to re-open Cedar Community Secondary School in context of the entire 10-year facilities plan. The Coalition of Nanaimo-Ladysmith Secondary School Parent Advisory Councils, comprised of a majority of district high school parent councils, made the request to trustees at the June 3 education committee meeting. The school district is reviewing the facilities plan. Earlier in the year, the board reversed part of the plan that saw the closure of the Cedar school and its conversion to an elementary school. “We ask that you hold in abeyance
the decision to re-open Cedar secondary until the first draft of the longterm facilities plan is complete,” said Ed Chan, coalition spokesman and outgoing president of John Barsby’s parent council. “Once the board situates Cedar school within a draft long-term facilities plan, our coalition would welcome re-opening Cedar school in whatever form ... as long as the board is able to show it makes educational sense, it makes fiscal sense and it makes community sense,” he said. The coalition is also asking the district to bring in an independent advisor to help the board with the remainder of the review, in order to provide a “fresh set of eyes,” and is seeking to engage with the board in good faith to influence the facilities plan. It also asks the district to close and

consolidate schools where it makes fiscal and strategic sense. Steve Rae, school board chairman, said he respected the coalition’s passion for public education, but said plans to re-open Cedar will still go ahead. “We’re moving forward with the facilities plan coming out. We’re not changing Cedar, we’re not going back and getting a special advisor and we have great, qualified staff that are putting together a facilities plan,” said Rae. “We have a lot of talented people that know our district well,” he added. The coalition has the support of the Nanaimo school district parent advisory council, but is not associated with it, according to Chan. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

MAYOR PLANS to reach out to comptroller for instructions after meeting in Victoria.
Six Nanaimo politicians travelled to Victoria last week to get the province to see beyond the concrete, earth and stone of the Colliery dams. “All differences aside from council and how fractious it’s been in the community, this is about us going to the ministry and saying this park and these little dams represent far more to the community than just a couple of structures,” said Mayor Bill McKay, whose council wanted to relay what “magical places” the dams are. Five city councillors and the mayor met with the comptroller and deputy minister of forests, lands and natural resource operations in Victoria on Thursday to explain the Colliery quagmire, what the structures mean to the community emotionally and the need for more time to work on the structures. It comes after the city won a temporary hold on an order to remediate the Colliery dams as the Environment Appeal Board considers its stay application. Coun. Bill Bestwick said the goal was to express their political position on the situation council finds itself in and build a relationship with the deputy minister and the office ultimately responsible for making a final decision. He said the office did more listening than talking and council will have to wait and see what the next steps are but he thought it went “really good.” McKay agrees, and said he now plans to reach out to the comptroller to understand what his take away of the meeting was and instructions for council.

San Francisco, which have been livening up their downtowns with repurposed car stalls and space for residents and businesses that stretch beyond sidewalks. Those familiar with the trend say it’s all about expanding the vibrancy of streets, economics and connecting people. It provides public seating where none existed and puts more people directly in front of businesses than a car, according to Corry Hostetter, executive director for the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association. It’s her organization that’s footing the $12,000 bill for the experimental urban space. Half of the parklet will be a patio serviced by 2 Chefs Affair while the other is an open public oasis of colourful beach umbrellas, astro turf, benches and Japanese maples. The DNBIA will be looking for feedback on the idea of reinvented stalls and new patio space over the next three months and reports that the city is open to looking at permits for more of the parklets. While the addition of the parklet means two fewer stalls on
Commercial Street, Hostetter doesn’t believe people will mind the loss of parking and says there is underground parking available. “We really want to see if it’s a viable opportunity to create more space for people downtown and that will help business… as well as creating something fun and funky and interesting to look at,” she said. Tammy Deline and Daniel Caron, the husband-and-wife team behind 2 Chefs Affair, hope people’s reaction is positive to the parklets so there’s more next year. The park and patio add a European flair, allow people to sit and enjoy the downtown, and has given their restaurant outdoor seating. “To have something like this in places which you don’t have outdoor seating is not only good for the business, but it’s good to get people going out. It’s more of a social thing,” Caron said. The parklet was designed by architect Mark Ashby to be eyecatching and a little bit audacious. People can’t help but take notice and it becomes a catalyst for them to interact with each other, he said. There are not many of these urban patios, “where you can sit and have a cup of coffee without feeling guilty that you didn’t buy it from the restaurant that put the seats out there, that I think is something that has a lot of value,” he said. The Commercial Street parklet will remain until October. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Malls shoulder biggest tax bill

Shopping centres shoulder Nanaimo’s biggest tax bills. While Nanaimo Forest Products continued to slip down the ranks of the city’s highest taxpayers last year, shopping malls and big box stores filled out eight of the 10 spots on the 2014 tax roll, according to the city’s Annual Municipal Report. Woodgrove Centre remained the single-largest taxpayer in the City of Nanaimo, paying $4.6 million and three per cent of the tax levy, while Nanaimo North Town came in second with $2.3 million. The number is up from the year previous when the shopping mall shot up the four spots in

Passengers from the Celebrity Infinity wait at the cruise ship terminal for buses and other transportation to take them on tours and other activities around Nanaimo Friday. Six cruise ships visits are scheduled for Nanaimo in 2016, double the number of visits this year.
Six vessels expected for 2016 By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN
Expect to see more cruise ships and their passengers visiting Nanaimo next year. A change in cruise ship destinations from Mexico to Alaska and the drop in the value of the Canadian dollar will bring six of the massive vessels into the harbour next year. Starting in May 2016, Royal Caribbean Cruises’ Explorer of the Sea will pay the first large cruise ship visit, followed with stopovers by Celebrity Cruise Lines’ Celebrity Infinity, Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Serenity in August, Princess Cruises’ Coral Princess and Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Solstice, both in September and Princess Cruises’ Star Princess in October. “At the beginning of the year it looked like three. That became
four and now we’re up to six, which is great,” David Mailloux, Nanaimo Port Authority spokesman. Mailloux credits port authority marketing efforts with the cruise lines and promotion at the annual Seatrade Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., plus the drop in the value of the loonie versus the U.S. dollar. “The dollar is part of that and just the consistency of what people experience when they’re up here, so we have to continue with that shout,” Mailloux said. “We’re new on the block and have to show how distinctive we are as a destination.” The Celebrity Infinity tied up at the Nanaimo cruise ship terminal Friday and was the first of three schedule cruise ship visits for 2015.
2015 works out to about $55 annually for the average home. “It is important to claim your Home Owner Grant, if eligible, and pay your taxes on time to avoid penalties,” said Diane Hiscock, manager of revenue services for the City of Nanaimo. “If you have not received your tax notice by now, please contact our office.” This year’s due date to pay municipal taxes is July 2. Mayor Bill McKay said there’s no doubt retail is a big part of the tax base and points to a multi-year tax relief program for industry as the reason why commercial business dominates the tax roll. Council’s decision to reduce the industrial tax rate over time contributed to the success of large industrial facilities like Nanaimo Forest Products, but commercial and residential ratepayers had to make up the difference, McKay said. The city is being called on by the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce to cut businesses a break. The adjustment would recognize commercial ratepayers’ contribution to the community, help promote business migration and allow other B.C. communities time to play catch up on Nanaimo’s rates, said Kim Smythe, chamber chief executive officer.

Tax notices sent to Nanaimo residents Property tax notices were sent out to residents of Nanaimo last month. City council approved its tax rate for 2015 at meeting in early May, setting a one-per cent tax increase within city boundaries. Property tax notices also include levies collected for other agencies, such as the Regional District of Nanaimo, Province of B.C. School Tax and more. Combined, the tax increase for
the rankings with $1.8 million in taxes – a move triggered by new commercial buildings like Canadian Tire. First Capital Corporation, owner of Port Place Shopping Centre, saw its taxes rise from $1.3 million to $1.5 in 2014, which it attributes to the completion of the third phase of its high street development. It bumped Nanaimo Forest Products out of the third spot. Brad Bailey, associate vice president of Colliers International Nanaimo, said the presence of shopping centres on the tax roll is a sign of a changing trend on Vancouver Island where retail is big. There’s market demand with attractive capitalization rates compared to major city centres like Toronto, and higher investment returns. Property owners are also investing in their products, allowing them to get higher lease rates and greater value, he said.

Nanaimo Unique Kids Organization is expanding its services to offer help to young children with autism. NUKO has operated in Nanaimo since 2005 and offers support programs for school-age children. The new program, which starts in September and will be led by Keri Chapdelaine, NUKO behavioural consultant and Sara White, behavioural analyst, offers early intervention services for children under six diagnosed
with autism. “The new program that we’re opening, the child must have autism - must be on the spectrum,” said Teresa Nielsen, NUKO program manager. “Right now we deal with children with neurological difficulties.” Providing the services in Nanaimo will save the cost of bringing consultants from out of town and make it easier for families to access quality early intervention for their children. Nielsen said children in the program will also benefit from receiving one-on-one
support from staff. “For more information, come to the open house and Keri will be on hand to answer the questions,” Nielsen said. NUKO will host an open house to showcase the program and its Nanaimo Academic Leaning Centre program Friday (June 12), 2:30-6:30 p.m., at its centre, located at 3792 Gilfillan Rd. For more information about NUKO programs and the open house, please call 250585-6856 or visit the organization website at www.nuko.ca. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

ChariTy EvENT takes place June 21 to help mental health programs. By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
Sit up. Put your feet on the floor. Put your slippers on. Push yourself out of bed. For the eight months that she fought depression, Carroll Xavier lived out her days in steps. “It takes everything you have to put one foot in front of the other every day,” said Xavier, who suffered a nervous breakdown after being bullied in the workplace. Next year, she hopes to ride to shed light on mental illness and the need to break its stigma. Xavier is a supporter of Ride don’t Hide, an annual charity event by the Canadian Mental Health Association to raise money and get people talking about mental health. This year’s event happens June 21 and while Xavier will miss it, she plans to help the cause and gear up for the ride next year. The national campaign which will see thousands of cyclists support the ride this month, was founded four years ago by Michael Schratter, a Vancouver teacher living with bipolar disorder. He spent almost 18 months cycling 40,000 kilometres around the globe to raise money for the mental health
association and awareness of mental illness. Hearing his story has given Xavier the incentive to tell her own and see if she can help people the way his honesty helped her. It took Xavier eight months of supports and counseling to claw her way out of depression and feel strong enough to re-enter her workplace and prove she wasn’t a victim. The more people who talk about and accept it, the more people with mental illness won’t be afraid to live out in the open where they can get help, said Xavier, who wants to address stigma. “When you say I have depression or I was depressed or I suffer from PTSD, or I have anxiety attacks, the look on [people’s] faces is like ‘oh, I hope it’s not catching,’ or they try to cheer you up,” she said. “You can’t cheer someone who’s depressed.” One in five Canadians will experience a mental health program this year, according to the Canadian Mental Health Association. “Mental health is important to everyone and we are showing community support”, said Gwen Vonarx, program and event coordinator for the mid-island CMHA branch. Ride don’t Hide happens June 21 at Maffeo Sutton Park. Money raised will go towards public education and a speaker series for mental health. EDITORIAL
Reconciliation begins with us After six years, countless tears and thousands of emotional accounts of residential school experiences, the national Truth and Reconciliation Commission report came down this week. The report makes more than 90 specific action points aimed at such things as helping aboriginal people recapture their culture, educating the general population about the country’s aboriginal heritage, and creating government policies and programs designed to enhance our understanding of the importance of that heritage and the distinctiveness of Canada’s aboriginal people. Residential schools were an attempt to sever the cultural connection that saw aboriginal elders and heads of families pass on their language and other traditional heritage to younger generations. In the 1960s, leaders in Quebec sought to have their province’s “distinct society” – its majority French-speaking population, unique culture and civil law tradition – officially recognized by the government of Canada. Today, Quebec and its uniqueness in this country are today recognized as an integral part of Canada’s heritage and cultural makeup. The same recognition must be afforded Canada’s First Nations. Rather than asking, “What does this have to do with me?” or stating, “It wasn’t my ancestors who did that,” we all need to ask ourselves, “What can I do personally to change the way I feel about and interact with aboriginal people in my community?” It starts with systemically re-imagining the relationship between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people on a personal, individual level. It’s about treating all people as fellow human beings, free of judgment, with respect and compassion. It’s something we can all do, regardless of what government policies may be enacted in the wake of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s work.
The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith,V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

Canada can move forward as a nation and reconcile the events of the past with the possibilities of the future. One of the recommendations was to hold a public inquiry into the factors surrounding more than 1,100 missing or murdered indigenous women in Canada. A Liberal private member’s motion to hold a national inquiry has the support of the Official Opposition but it’s unlikely to win support of the government. The Conservatives say that from discussions with aboriginal groups, the government has a plan to prevent, support and take action on the issue. That plan, despite its lack of detail, carries a $25-million commitment. Despite the vastly different culture, wealth and status, Canada and Nigeria face similar problems among their indigenous female population. Namely, that people, for whatever reasons, are out to hurt them. That’s unacceptable, no matter what country you live in. Nigeria has taken steps to support its women. Canadian women might enjoy more rights than their Nigerian sisters, which puts even more pressure on Canada to extend that protection to all of its citizens, no matter their childhood or choice of lifestyle. We’re still demanding that someone Bring Back Our Girls.

With the federal election coming up later this year, now is the time to be asking for funding for major ferry infrastructure projects, says letter writer.
Improving ferry infrastructure is important To the Editor,
Do we want jobs? Do we want a better standard of living? Do we want economic development? Do we want sustainability of access to the mainland? Then Vancouver Island has to improve its main link with the mainland as reliable and efficient transportation is a crucial element of economic development. This will bring wealth with its direct enhancement, through taxation, to our social services: education, health care, etc. And lots of jobs. What has been hurting the central Vancouver area has been the inefficiency of the B.C. Ferries routes serving the mid Island. There is an obvious solution: a route between Gabriola and Vancouver airport and all its apparent advantages. It was in the plan 40 years ago and must still
be gathering dust somewhere in Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure archives. It would eliminate the requirement for work at the Horseshoe Bay terminal and the need for six major vessel replacements for a saving of at least $1.1 billion. And since all federal parties want to invest in transportation infrastructure and we are in a long-winded election campaign, this is the time to bring the subject to their attention and hear what they have to say. They do it for the eastern provinces, so why not for B.C.? We might get a 50-minute crossing to the mainland a lot faster than we were hoping for. And jobs and economic wealth for Nanaimo and central Vancouver Island.

Conference centre isn’t going to turn things around To the Editor,
Re: Conference centre seeks support, May 5. Just how much more time – one week, one month,
or one year – does Mayor Bill McKay need to turn around the negative of the Vancouver Island Conference Centre that annually costs
the overburdened Nanaimo taxpayers $900,000 in operational subsidies? Not even Nanaimo’s spin doctor, Sasha Angus of the
Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation, could pull off that particular miracle.

British Empire left a legacy on society that should be celebrated To the Editor,
Re: Heritage Days belong to all, Editorial, May 14. I was dismayed to see how city council buckled under the pressure of those who claimed to have been wronged by the British Empire. I for one was disgusted by these small-minded agitators. I took part in the annual parade with the
Nanaimo Concert Band every year that I could muster the breath to march and play the trombone. That was for 39 years, and my wife and children always came to watch the big parade with lots of bands and floats. It was a great parade, enjoyed by thousands. Upon reflection, I asked myself what the Empire left
behind. The answer is all around. No, I’m not thinking of the Bastion – that was the Hudson’s Bay Company. I’m thinking about democratic government, law and order, and a strong judicial system, all of which countries formerly part of the British Empire exhibit. I did a little research and discovered that there are 53 countries with a popula-

While the country is spiralling in debt, the only remedy offered by the current government is Bill C-51 to give more surveillance power to secret agencies and start with the spying on everyone and persecuting any opposition, critics or even peaceful protest participants. Shadowing and spying indiscriminately on the citizens of a country by either religious, communist or fascist governments never worked. It has only mostly brutalized innocent, honourable and decent people. All dictators, inquisitions, KGBs or such operated within some type of ‘in the name of security’ premise that gave secret police justification, immunity, and open hands to make any mistake they see fit. Furthermore, the Harper government’s anti-terrorism bill violates human rights. Speak out at this crucial moment. Contact your senators that are currently debating the legality of Bill C-51. Bill C-51 could still be averted.

KENTON DICK heading to Berklee College of Music. By Nicholas Pescod The NewS BUlleTIN
Alto saxophonist Kenton Dick has a lot going for him these days. The Wellington Secondary School student has been earning award after award as a member of the DickOlynyk Trio, a jazz group that includes his older sister, Tiana and drummer Ethan Olynyk. Among the awards that Dick has won this year include the Lou Willamson Scholarship for Outstanding Woodwind Player Award, a $2500 scholarship to Humber College in Toronto and a Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce Business Achievement Award. “It is great to get the recognition and it is inspiring,” Dick said. This summer Dick, along with Olynyk, will be heading to Boston where they will spend five weeks at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. Both Dick and Olynyk received full scholarships to attend the five week summer program. “I think I will be making a lot connections at Berklee,” Dick said. Under the direction of Wellington Secondary School band director Carmella Luvisotto, the trio has attracted all kinds of attention. Earlier this year, they were the only Canadian band to attend the Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey, Calif., where Olynyk earned the Outstanding Soloist for Drums Award in the high school division. Dick, who is in his junior year of high school, explained that going to

festivals is not only a way for them to travel but it also provides the trio with a great opportunity to network. “Whenever we go to these festivals we always come back and end up friending a bunch of people on Facebook because you meet all these new people and they are interested in the same thing,” Dick said. Following high school graduation next year, Dick plans to pursue a career in music. He says he would like to attend Berklee full-time, but is keeping his options open. “I want to apply to a whole bunch of places,” Dick said. “I’ll probably apply to Hum-
ber and then I’ll apply to schools in New York.” With his sister set to graduate this year, Dick is hopeful that the trio can still remain together. “I really hope that we will stay together,” Dick said. “I haven’t met a single drummer that is better than Ethan that is our age or in college. I want the group to stay connected for as long as we can.” On Saturday (June 13), Dick-Olynyk Trio will be performing at the Acme Food Co., with Liam MacKay, beginning at 7 p.m. Admission to the event is by suggested donation of $5. Farkas, Barbara May March 1, 1929 – May 17, 2015 It is with sadness that we share our mother’s passing. Barbara was a free gypsy spirit and a strong woman who loved to travel, explore and adventure. Mom emigrated from Scotland in 1966 with her 5 children. It was not an easy life but many of her favourite memories were spent with her children. While not happy to live her life alone she certainly never let it slow her down; camping, cruising and gallivanting on her own. Mom was broken – hearted to lose her beloved sons, Alan Lornie (2003) & Ralph Lornie (2006). She leaves behind her son, Martin Lornie, daughters Babs Lornie McGary, Kate & (son – in – law) Alan Britton, her grandchildren Angela (Jordan), Lesley, David, Eric, Johnny, James (Laura), Farrell and Thea, and great – grandchildren Annika, Daniel, Emma and Trinity, as well as many dear friends, near and far. Whenever you enjoy a delicious tall ice cream cone, one of her favourite things, please let Mom dance across your mind with love and a smile. There will be no service by request. Barbara will be laid to rest at Ladysmith Cemetery on 4th Avenue. Rest in peace mom, you’re forever in our hearts. Condolences may be offered at telfordsburialandcremationcentre.com or telfordn@shaw.ca Telford’s of Nanaimo 250-591-6644

Summer camps help keep children active I
“
PARKS AND REC offers activities for all ages and abilities.
No matter what camp you go to, you’re going to get out and enjoy the sunshine.
BY KARL YU THE NEWS BULLETIN
W
ith summer mere weeks away and the end of the school year not far behind, the City of Nanaimo Parks, Recreation and Environment department has ways to occupy children’s time. There are summer day camps for many interests, whether children are into crafts, sports, music or science. Oliver Woods community centre features a sports camp for eight- to 12-year-olds called Adventure Sports Camp. It also offers Camp Wild, a camp for five- to nine-year-olds to learn about nature and Tree Frog Camp for three- to fiveyear-olds, said Cheryl Krytor, recreation coordinator at Oliver Woods. In the south end, there is Girls Get Active Camp, providing active outings and team building for girls aged six to 10 years at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. Camp Holidaze takes place at Beban Park, offering activities such as skating and crafts. Bowen Explorers, out of Bowen Park, offers an introduction to science for six- to 12-year-olds. The camps offer skill development and promotion of healthy lifestyles as well as intangible benefits. “It really gets [children] out

and into the public,” said Sean McKenzie, a summer leader at Camp Holidaze. “We take them out around the city to look local landmarks, we take them swimming, we play games and it not really forces them, but it gives them the opportunity
to make new friends and cooperate as they play games together. “Often, they have free time as well. They can take that step out and meet some new people and form relationships that can last a long time, at
school and for the rest of their lives as well.” According to Lauren Rogers, summer leader with Adventure Sports Camp at Oliver Woods, whatever a child’s interest, parks and recreation department day camps are can’t-lose
situations. “You can’t really go wrong with any of the summer camps,” Rogers said. “No matter what camp you go to, you’re going to get out and enjoy the sunshine. You’re going to make new friends, you’re going to do lots of sports and lots of fun activities, that are also intellectual as well as active.” Krytor said start dates vary for the different day camps and people can register by phone at 250-756-5200, online at https://ireg.nanaimo.ca/ Start/Start.asp or in person at any community centre in Nanaimo. “It’s a 10-week summer this year, so the kids are going to need to be registered into different programs to keep them busy throughout the summer, because there is a long school break this summer,” said Krytor. Pirates and Chiefs play doubleheader
Moto magic rocks track
The riders were rockstars this past weekend at the Rockstar Energy Motocross Nationals. The annual national series stop drew thousands to Nanaimo’s Wastelands Motocross Park, with some of the world’s best riders taking to the track for MX1 and MX2 main events on Sunday. Taking the top spot in the MX1 event was Cole Thompson, from Ontario, while Kaven Benoit, from Quebec, took the MX2 race. Saturday’s amateur day featured other divisions of racing including the women’s championship series.

Football fans keep eye on B.C. Lions camp
THE NEWS BULLETIN
B.C. Lions running back Andrew Harris guest coaches at V.I. Raiders camp.
As the B.C. Lions hold their training camp in Kamloops this month, V.I. Raiders fans will be cheering for a couple of alumni. Running back Andrew Harris, returning from injury, remains a key cog with the Lions and receiver Whitman Tomusiak has a chance at an expanded role with the CFL team. Lions general manager Wally Buono talked to the News Bulletin a few days before camp.
Buono was asked if the departure of Stefan Logan puts more on Harris’s plate, but the GM said that’s not the case. “What we’re trying to do is not put too much more on his shoulders,” said Buono, adding that the Lions drafted Shaquille Murray-Lawrence out of UNLV to take some pressure off of Harris. “Our plan is to use Andrew, but our plan is not to beat him into the ground to where

by half the season, he’s lost or he’s hurt,” Buono said. “If we can do that, he’ll be better for it and so will we.” Tomusiak, meanwhile, will be “coming in to compete” this year. “Tomusiak is at that point [where] he now needs to go to training camp, compete and he’s not going to be protected by his junior status anymore,” Buono said. “I think he’ll be up for it.” sports@nanaimobulletin.com
Nanaimo Pirates had no problem dispatching the Whalley Chiefs in a doubleheader Sunday at Nanaimo’s Serauxmen Stadium. The home team won 8-2 and 13-3, with pitchers North Rainey and Garrett Goodall taking the wins, respectively. Rainey threw seven strikeouts in his win. Zach Diewert and Cole Warken each contributed three RBIs in the 8-2 victory. In the second game, Shawn Arabsky logged three hits and three RBIs. The previous weekend, the Hub City Paving Pirates won three out of five games at a tournament in the Fraser Valley. Nanaimo started with a 1-0 shutout against the eventualtournament-champion North Shore Twins on Thursday. The next day, Nanaimo lost 10-6 to the Langley Blaze B team and then fell 4-1 to Okotoks. The Pirates responded Saturday with a 7-3 win over the Victoria Eagles and a 14-4 blowout against Brampton. A difference-maker at the tournament was first baseman Matt Skingle, who hit two home runs. “He launched a couple balls,” Rogers said. “They were bombs.” Actually, one was an ace as it cleared the fence and travelled another 75 feet onto the tennis court beyond. Another guy who showed well was Rainey, who threw a complete-game shutout on the first day. He struck out eight and while he gave up some walks, he was able to get out of jams. “He had a solid outing and there were some people that were watching, some D1 scouts…” Rogers said. “I think he was touching 86 that day so it was a real positive day for him.” GAME ON … The Pirates take on the Parksville Royals on Wednesday (June 10) at 6 p.m. at Serauxmen Stadium. The next league games after that aren’t until June 20 on the road against the North Shore Twins.

Synchro Diamonds earn lots of bling The Nanaimo Diamonds’ top swimmers are in synch, and some of the little ones will get there, too. The city’s synchronized swim club celebrated the season with its annual yearend showcase at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre last month. “It was a really great year,” said Brenda Scott, the club’s coach. “Our numbers are probably at an alltime high.” What’s especially encouraging is the strong registration of swimmers aged 3-8. “Our little aqua-
