Advocates hope boxes boost crime reporting Golden brown might soon be the new green as Nanaimo residents follow increasing water conservation measures set out by the City of Nanaimo and the Regional District of Nanaimo. Conservation Level 2 water use restrictions come into effect Monday (June 15) in the city that will limit residents to watering lawns and washing vehicles to just two days a week. The RDN is already at Level 3 restrictions.

PROVINCE SAYS Island in midst of Level 3 drought. BY MELISSA FRYER THE NEWS BULLETIN

No one in the Nanaimo area can remember ever going to such extreme watering restrictions. And it’s not officially summer for another 10 days. The City of Nanaimo will increase water conservation in the city’s boundaries to Level 2 on Monday (June 15), following a bulletin from the provincial

government that the Island, Gulf Islands and Haida Gwaii are experiencing Level 3 drought conditions. “I don’t know that we’ve ever gone to Level 2 watering restrictions,” said Bill Sims, the city’s manager of water resources. Level 2 restrictions mean no watering is permitted between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Washing driveways and parking lots is prohibited. Residents living in evennumbered addresses can water on Wednesdays and Saturdays, while odd-numbered addresses can water on Thursdays and Sundays. Residents can wash vehi-

cles or boats only on their watering day. The Jump Lake reservoir is about 95 per cent full, but summertime draw-down began a month earlier than usual. Sims said the city is confident enough water is available throughout the summer if conservation begins now. “We’re bracing for and taking a conser vative approach that it’s going to be a hot, dry summer,” Sims said. “We’re walking a balance here.” The Regional District of Nanaimo is continuing with its Level 3 restrictions, which began last week, said

Julie Pisan, drinking water and watershed protection program coordinator. “We’re taking a conservative approach not just from lack of rain but because of lack of snowpack,” she said. “We don’t know the impact of a low snowpack into the fall. “Even with rain in June, we could still get a drought in July, August and September.” The snowpack for the year is one per cent of normal, Pisani said, adding the RDN has never gone to Level 3 restrictions in all of its water systems. On the street people learn to keep their mouths shut, but volunteers hope they’ll open up with a pen. Locked metal boxes have been installed across the city for people to slip in anonymous crime tips. It’s just one initiative of the Community Action Team, a peer-based group that aims to make the streets safer for sex-trade workers. While a small percentage of the city’s sex trade is done on the streets, the RCMP reports that it’s where prostitutes are most at risk. CAT, a joint effort of the Nanaimo Women’s Resources Society and Haven Society, started two years ago It gives people with a mission to take workers that chance to sex-trade out of isolation and say, you know give them a place to check in and report what, we need violence. It’s been doing help here. research on the sex trade in Nanaimo and has installed four boxes. A $12,500 city grant is expected to help CAT continue its work, including a website, training and more anonymous places to report crime. Aimee Chalifoux, a CAT volunteer and former street kid, said it’s about keeping people safe. She wishes a system like the locked boxes existed years ago – she would have used it. One of the first things learned on the streets is to keep your mouth shut about what you see and hear, or get labelled a rat, she said. With the boxes, people can report crime in privacy. A volunteer from CAT picks it up, records the data and reports it to the RCMP. “You don’t necessarily feel comfortable telling somebody what’s going on, but to be able to write it down and put it in a locked box where no one can access, I just think it’s great,” Chalifoux said. “It gives people that chance to say, you know what, we need help here.”

T

ucked in amongst the big homes and lush lawns of Nanaimo’s north end sits Westdale-Leslie Park. It’s a place that has seen better days. The play structure’s colours have faded and the aging swing set often remains idle. But it could soon have a new lease on life, thanks in part to the efforts of one community group led by Sandra Hamel, who lives directly behind the park. “It’s a lovely location,” Hamel said. “You can see the ocean and there is a large grassy area, but the park equipment is really old.” On Sunday (June 14) WestdaleLeslie Park will be the site of a large fundraiser called Sunday Fun Day, which is aimed at raising roughly $20,000 for the Westdale Park Project. “It’s not attracting the children as it should,” Hamel said. “The kids don’t see it as fun.” The fundraiser, which also includes a garage sale and silent auction on Catalina Drive, features bouncy castles, face painting, craft making, a bake sale and much more. Children will also have the unique opportunity to paint a car donated by B.C. Auto Wreckers. The idea to refurbish the Westdale-Leslie Park came after Hamel’s daughter asked a simple question last summer. “My daughter said ‘Mommy, can we get a new park?’ and so I started researching it,” she said. Hamel then became involved with Volunteers in the Park, a public participation program offered by the City of Nanaimo, and organized the Westdale Park Project, a plan to revitalize the aging space. In April, the city earmarked $30,000 for the project and while

Jeffrey Hamel, left, with his kids danika, amelia, Esme and his wife, Sandra, check out the playground equipment at Westdale-Leslie Park. The Hamels are behind Sunday fun day, a fundraiser that aims to raise money for the park upgrades. The event is scheduled to take place on Sunday (June 14).

Country Grocer and the Investors Group have donated money toward it, Hamel says they still need $20,000. Upgrades will include a new entrance and a hard court surface that could be used for both basketball and hockey. Plans for the park call for two new play structures with one designed for toddlers. “Currently there really is no toddler playground in this area,” Hamel said. Westdale-Leslie Park was constructed in 1993 through the Volunteers in the Park program. Hamel said with new people moving into

the area it is time for an upgrade. “There are new families coming in and they need a new park,” Hamel said. Sunday Fun Day takes place at Westdale-Leslie Park, located on the corner of Leslie Crescent and Westdale Road, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. A garage sale will be at 5265 Catalina Dr. Admission is by a donation of $6. For more information, please visit www.on.fb.me/1e1sdC4 or call 250391-4832. Additional information about the Westdale Park Project can be found at www.on.fb.me/1S2vVd5.

The Nanaimo school district saw a significant decrease in participation in Foundation Skills Assessment testing in 2014-15. The provincial tests, administered yearly to Grade 4 and 7 students, examines reading comprehension, writing and math skills. According to numbers from the school district, 647 Grade 7 students took the test this year, a 17-per cent decrease from the 884 who wrote the test in 2013-14. There was only a two-per cent decrease between 2013-14 and 2012-13. Only 716 Grade 4 students wrote the test this year, down from the 830 who took it the previous year, which equals a 14-per cent drop in participation. There was a four-per cent decrease between 2013-14 and 2012-13. At the June 3 district education committee meeting, John Blain, school superintendent, suggested possible reasons for the decrease. “It could be due to the job action and the unrest that was happening at that time ... the board took a different slant on how we work with our schools,” said Blain. “Principals therefore, weren’t [phoning parents] and some of the things like that. “So we would have to go through another year or so to be able to really specifically find what we think is the major cause to that drop and we won’t know whether or not it was a provincial thing until the rest of the data comes out,” he said. Parents can request to have their children exempted from the test due to unforeseen and extremely disruptive circumstances beyond the student’s control. Charlene McKay, district parent advisory council president, said her group didn’t take a stance on testing and whether parents withdrew their children was an individual choice. The skills assessment attracts controversy, as results are used by The Fraser Institute, a right-wing think tank, to rank the province’s schools. Mike Ball, president of the Nanaimo teachers’ union, said opinions on the assessment are changing. “Parents are understanding that the tests are no longer really valid and important. The use of them given to the Fraser Institute to rank schools is pretty abhorrent ... they don’t count for grades and the time can be better spent in school on other more important educational issues,” said Ball.

Chalifoux said city funding will be a “big help.” CAT wants to raise awareness about sexual exploitation, educate the public and be there for those people who are being exploited. Her hope is to see sex-trade workers safe and if and when they are ready to exit, ensure there’s proper services in place to help them and they aren’t set up to fail. City councillors Wendy Pratt and Gordon Fuller both supported the grant for CAT. Fuller said a program like this is able to build relations with the women and possibly get them out of the situation they’re in. Pratt believes the women deserve all the help they can get. “I don’t think every woman out there made a plan to do that or even came from a bad family. Sometimes circumstances get them there,” she said.

Inbrief Legal arguments delay sentencing in shooting city scene

Ferries scraps slots proposal Casino gambling aboard B.C. Ferries has been ruled out by the provincial government. The province wanted to test slot machines on Tsawwassen-swartz Bay ferries as a potential money maker to boost revenue, but a business analysis found it would instead lose $240,000 a year because of the staffing, equipment and technology costs.

I

jEffrEy oud, 38, convicted in 2012 incident. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

A Nanaimo man convicted for a July 2012 shooting will have to wait until September to see how long his sentence will be. Jeffrey Ryan Oud, 38, was found guilty of mischief, endangering life and unlawfully discharging a firearm at a house in

downtown Nanaimo. In B.C. Supreme Court on Tuesday, Judge Robin Baird ruled that a mandatory minimum sentence of four years facing Oud was unconstitutional, contrary to a section in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms that states no one shall be subjected to cruel and unusual punishment. C ro w n c o u n s e l i s expected to argue against that in September, which prevented the sentence from being handed down. However, seeing as close to three years have passed, and the fact Baird

said Oud was exposed to a jail sentence, he was taken into custody to begin jail time. “The argument was that four years as a minimum is unjust,” said Bert King, Oud’s legal counsel. “It may well be that in a case like this, four years is appropriate without a minimum and I think that’s what Justice Baird [was] saying in that courtroom.” King said how much time his client is credited for will be determined in September. “Because this is what’s called ‘dead time,’ in the

sense that it’s prior to sentencing, he may get time-and-a-half, because it’s harder time when you go down to a prison and await your sentence ... basically you’re stuck in a giant, sort of 10-room condo, and you’re not leaving but for an hour a day to go out into a cement area and play basketball or walk around, so it’s harder time,” said King. Lesley Ruzicka and Basil McCormick, Crown counsellors, didn’t wish to comment until the case was concluded.

The court heard that at the time of the incident, Oud was an addict, looking to buy drugs and was ripped off of money. He subsequently fired seven rounds from a rifle at the house. A bullet grazed the cheek of a person inside the house, but no one else was injured. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Inbrief city scene

Byelection date set for summer Lantzville is heading to the polls. Again. Lantzville electors will vote to fill four vacant council seats Aug. 8, less than a year after the civic election. The community saw four politicians out of seven resign this spring, leaving council without quorum. The provincial government stepped in and authorized the mayor and two councillors to continue district business until vacant seats are filled this summer. Nominations for four councillor positions will be accepted beginning 9 a.m. on June 23. Advance voting will be July 29 and Aug. 5.

Residents using less Fire danger rating at highest level From /1

Level 3 restrictions in the RDN mean residents may water for one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening, every other day, from 6-10 a.m. and 6-10 p.m. Residents are not permitted to wash driveways or sidewalks. Hoses must be equipped with a shut-off device when washing vehicles or boats. Hand-watering gardens with a watering can or hose with a shut-off device is permitted at any time. “If we can hold tight in Level 3, if people are complying with those restrictions, we’ll be fine into the fall,” Pisani said. Agricultural and industrial operations are exempt from the restrictions, but the province is encouraging those users to adopt the 20-per cent voluntary reduction it’s also asking of residents. Staff with the Ministry of For-

ests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations are monitoring river levels and might upgrade the drought level if the weather continues to have a negative effect on stream flows and water supply. Level 4 drought is the highest rating and could result in provincial water managers suspending short-term water permits or industrial water licences. Nanaimo residents have already reduced water consumption by two per cent so far this year, which Sims attributes to public awareness on conservation, higher water rates and a general cultural shift in mindset. “People don’t take [water] for granted,” he said. “We don’t believe we have a right to a green lawn anymore.” For more information, please visit www.nanaimo.ca or www. rdn.bc.ca. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

The current dry spell has pushed Nanaimo area’s fire danger rating to its highest level. Marg Drysdale, Coastal Fire Centre fire information officer, said as of Wednesday morning, the extreme-level fire danger rating area stretches from Nanaimo to Lake Cowichan and halfway to Duncan and would likely be expanded to include Duncan by Wednesday afternoon. Fire prohibition areas were also expanded Wednesday at noon when Coastal Fire Centre included Haida Gwaii in a ban on all industrial burning and smaller Category 2 fires, which are small piles of material less than two metres high and three metres wide. Also banned are

firecrackers, fireworks, sky lanterns, burning barrels and burning cages of any size or description and use of binary exploding firearms targets. The bans will remain in place until Oct. 16. Campfires, less than a halfmetre tall by a half-metre wide are still permitted. “The temperatures may drop Thursday and Friday, but we’re still not seeing any substantial rain coming in,” Drysdale said. Penalties for contravening the fire prohibition range up to $100,000 and one year in jail. For more information, please visit http://bcwildfire.ca. Parking patrol goes high-tech Parking enforcement has gone high-tech. The City of Nanaimo retrofitted a vehicle with license plate recognition technology that uses cameras and a GPS unit to record location of cars and time parked. The technology allows for expanded patrol areas without more staff and more consistency to enforcement.

annually and are monitored by the investigation of complaints and select annual audits. Maeve O’Byrne, hospital foundation president, said it was a good exercise that helped them look more broadly and deeply at their business, but it was also a big sign of relief when they got the accreditation. The process took nine months. “There’s only 150 organizations in Canada that have this so it’s a pretty big deal for us,” she said. “We hope donors look at this and say OK, we know this is a really good organization.” The hospital foundation has been in Nanaimo for close to four decades, raising dollars for medical equipment, new facilities and renovations. O’Byrne said they believe in demonstrating to donors they are accountable and transparent and already publish audited financial statements online. The new ‘trustmark’ can now be used on all of their publications and she said being acknowledged by Imagine Canada reassures donors they can trust the foundation.

A Nanaimo not-for-profit hopes to firm up donors’ trust with new accreditation. The Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation is one of 25 nonprofits across the country that’s won the right to publish the Imagine Canada accreditation ‘trustmark’ on its literature. Earning accreditation in the standard program is no small feat, according to Bruce MacDonald, president and CEO of Imagine Canada, who calls it a rigorous, peer -reviewed process that’s meant to build public trust and confidence in the charitable sector. The program, started in 2012, looks at the board governance in organizations to their financial accountability and transparency, fundraising and volunteer involvement. EDITORIAL

Help keep Fido out of danger It’s that time of year again, when you make sure the air conditioning is working in your car and maybe even consider installing an automatic car starter – if you don’t already have one – to cool down the interior before you get in, because you just know it’s going to be an oven in there. With the heat comes the annual warnings about leaving pets in your car. Not heeding these warnings can lead to tragic consequences, yet we continue to see parked vehicles with furry friends cooped up inside – usually a dog. Most people leave their windows down a crack to allow for air circulation, but studies have shown that doing so doesn’t help much to prevent dangerously high temperatures in an enclosed space. Dogs play an important role in people’s lives. “Man’s best friend” is a commonly-accepted moniker for a reason. Many take their dog everywhere, as they would young children or other people who can’t be left unattended at home. Some see their dog as a member of the family too important to leave alone at home. But for whatever reason, some people still feel it’s acceptable to put that “friend” in a dangerous situation that could leave them with heat stroke in a matter of minutes, or worse, kill them. If you can’t bear being without your dog while you run your errands, why would you treat it so badly by leaving it in your vehicle? There are many stores around Nanaimo that welcome dog owners and their pets – based on the signage in their windows, at least. Why not frequent those vendors rather than risk the life of your friend? If you’re unwilling to leash your dog and have it accompany you while you do your business, leave it at home with plenty of water available.

If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith,V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

Because values are like muscles – they get stronger the more we exercise them – activists can consciously stimulate intrinsic values in communications and campaigns. Researchers have also discovered what they call the values “bleed-over effect.” Because values tend to exist in clusters, when one is activated, so are compatible neighbouring values. For example, people reminded of generosity, selfdirection and family are more likely to support proenvironmental policies than those reminded of financial success and status. Because values are an important driver of attitudes and behaviour, they are essential to changing social norms. Our social responsibility goes deeper than our consumer habits and voting choices. We need to reflect on what’s important to us. We all deserve to feel secure in our homes and communities, but we can’t depend on the false sense of security that isolation or materialistic pursuits bring. When psychological insecurity is on the rise, we need to stay committed to the values that make us environmentalists and champions of social justice. Instead of retreating to our corners, let’s turn toward one another to re-establish our sense of security and strength.

‘We need to reflect on what’s important to us.’

Passenger rail isn’t practical

Morden Mine important to city’s culture

To the Editor,

To the Editor:

Eric McLean Nanaimo

Environmentalist David Suzuki speaks at Nanaimo’s Beban Park social centre last week.

Blue Dot is a red flag To the Editor,

Re: Make city a blue dot on the map, Letters, June 2. The Blue Dot campaign of the David Suzuki Foundation is simply another business product for Suzuki and his many employees. After 20 years, ‘global warming’ no longer generates consistent revenue, nor is it meeting its primary mission of restricting and controlling free enterprise. Hence the need for the Blue Dot campaign, which uses 23 paid employees to create a Canada-wide ‘grassroots initiative.’ Their job is to pressure local governments into passing ill-defined ‘rights’ that hit the right emotional notes, while tying the hands of those we elect to make decisions. While the ‘right’ to clean air, water and food sounds noble, entrenching such allencompassing and ill-defined rights within the charter, or even local bylaws, would result in endless litigation and red tape, making large industrial or infrastructure projects difficult, if not impossible. The Blue Dot campaign is simply a product, another means of putting one more stick in the spokes of development and job creation while generating a consistent revenue stream for Suzuki. Nanaimo city council must resist the efforts of their lobbyists.

Randy O’Donnell president Nanaimo Ratepayers Association

Re: Directors question support for railway, June 2. Yes, it would be nice to have a functioning railway but just how practical is it going to be to achieve this? The public has been treated to a great deal of spin regarding this question over the years. The cost of bringing the line back to safety requirements seesaws from high to astronomical depending on who one asks. How many people would use it as passengers? Will the railway be competitive with bus trans-

port? Will those who already use buses actually change their choice of transportation? What commercial/ industrial customers will use the rail facility? Can the railway, after all these questions have been answered, actually run profitably, especially when the servicing of massive debt is considered? Until all these questions have been realistically addressed, no money should be spent on what could so very easily turn out to be yet another boondoggle.

Re: Ministr y meets with council on Colliery dams, June 9. In the public interest, perhaps the mayor and five councillors could share with the citizens of Nanaimo what was contained in the information package that they provided to the deputy minister of forests, lands and

natural resource operations and the comptroller of water rights. Why aren’t the officials (who were elected to represent by means of an at-large system) disclosing more information to the public regarding the Chase River dams predicament? It was an injustice that so few citizens were afforded the opportunity to wit-

To the Editor,

Re: Slip-and-slide leaves city dry, Letters, May 28. The letter writer makes a great point about Mayor Bill McKay’s crass statement that once we get ’em here, we’ll stick it to ’em for free tickets. I doubt they’ll come now anyway after the mayor of Nanaimo not being up front with them.

Re: Morden Mine worth saving, Letters, May 26. Coal created the economy of this town, brought prosperity to it and caused us, and all the immigrants before us, to make this our home. Think about that. All over B.C. there are many communities which love to blow their horn about their past and culture. Barkerville comes to mind, but even Victoria and Chemainus are good examples. These communities apparently understand the importance of history and culture, as well as the obvious tourism potential. The City of Nanaimo has a Culture and Heritage Department. What is the Morden Mine if not one of the finest examples of Nanaimo’s culture? Amid all the finger pointing between the various levels of government as to whose responsibility it is, this whole point has been lost. I call upon the City of Nanaimo to lead the fight to preserve the Morden Mine for future generations before it’s too late.

Nanaimo News Bulletin 11

However, aren’t there standards and regulations in place that apply to any public safety issue regarding dams in a residential community? Don’t elected officials have a duty to do what is in the best interests of Nanaimo’s citizenry over the long term?

When a total stranger from Toronto walks into the lives of two people living in Tennessee everything changes. That’s the basis behind Round the Bend at Salt Creek, a three-person production that will be playing at the Gabriola Theatre this weekend. Written by Joëlle Anthony, Round the Bend at Salt Creek stars Anthony along with her husband Victor and Portia Boehm. The play is set in northeastern Tennessee in 1953 and is about a girl who dreams of performing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Anthony says she and her husband have long wanted to put together a production. “We always wanted to do a play together and because he [Victor] loved old time music we thought it would be fun,” Anthony said. The play runs Saturday (June 13) at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday (June 14) at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door and $10 for anyone under the age of 16. Last, but certainly not least, I had long been awaiting my parents’ arrival with the anticipation of finally properly learning how to parallel park. Much to my surprise, the Acura RDX provides all of the tools required to successfully complete this complex and sometimes dangerous (when I’m behind the wheel) task. Honda adapts with buyers The very first Honda Accord, introduced to Canadians back in 1976, was about the same size as today’s Civic sedan and it had a less powerful engine. When the eighth generation Accord was introduced in 2008, it was officially classified as a “large car” and came with a 190-horsepower 4-cylinder engine, or an even more powerful optional V6. Eight-gen Accord did get a mild mid-life facelift for the 2011 model year and it included new front-end styling and some interior improvements. A new base SE trim line also replaced the previous LX trim. The four-cylinder is by far the most popular engine choice of Canadians, but there was also an interesting upgrade to the optional 3.5-litre V6 in 2011. Called Variable Cylinder Management (in Sedan editions only - not Accord Coupe), this system can improve fuel economy by shutting-down two or three cylinders, during light load driving conditions. Highway fuel economy with this V6 is almost the same as the four-cylinder version of Accord. No changes were made to Accord for the 2012 model year. The big changes came in 2013 when a landmark, smaller and lighter, all-new ninth generation Honda Accord was released. Although lighter, the 2013 Accord is structurally stronger than the previous generation Accord and although its outer dimensions are more compact and it has a shorter wheelbase, it has more rear seat legroom and a slightly larger trunk, according to Honda. In addition to four-door sedan and two-door coupe models of Accord, there’s also a five-door hatchback/ cross-over version called Crosstour, which was originally called Accord Crosstour when introduced in 2010. Accord sedan has consistently been a top performer in crash tests performed by both the IIHS and the NHTSA in the US. A Canadian family transportation favorite, the Honda Accord sedan is a top used car choice with a solid reputation for dependably and value.

Audi cars think like drivers 2nd Annual By Keith Morgan

5th – 20 1 e n u J

As Audi perfects its autonomous driving technology, it’s using ‘deep learning’ to train computers to imitate the human brain. This breakthrough played a critical role for a recent 885-kilometre autonomous-drive of “Jack,” the Audi A7 Sedan from Silicon Valley to Las Vegas. The deep learning process is at the centre of a drive to produce a commercially available vehicle that can pilot itself to any destination with little human help. Audi is cooperating with such key suppliers as NVIDIA, the digital-tech company based in Santa Clara, California, to create a vehicle computer that mimics the way human brains process new information. To understand the concept, think of the car’s way of learning as being similar to that of child. Caregivers teach a baby to identify things perceived with senses: a circle, a square, colors. Object edges are very important in this process. The edges form meaningful, distinct shapes, which the brain starts to recognize. A fire truck is red, has a certain shape and wheels, but at first, the baby might think all trucks are fire engines. Then the child learns to differentiate between different kinds of trucks. The car technology enables pixels to be generated by camera images, in a similar way to how the

Technology helps vehicles imitate drivers. human eyeball transfers images to the brain. The Audi processor, about the size of a tablet PC and powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra processor, analyzes every frame of video that comes in, and it senses edges which it groups into shapes. It learns that the shapes are objects then learns to differentiate those objects. This artificial intelligence enables the Audi processor to detect, for instance, features such as eyes, a nose and mouth, and it figures out that they all fit into a face. It also allows vehicles to detect and identify other vehicles. All of this information goes into a database to foster future advances in such recognition. The system serves as one of the important bases of intelligence for piloted driving. With every kilometre travelled,

the car gets smarter. But it takes more than terabytes of such data to make for successful autonomous driving. The data has to be processed very quickly: 30 video frames a second. The information must be transmitted, recognized, processed, analyzed – and provide a reaction – almost instantaneously, in case a driver is encountering dangerous conditions. That’s why one of the most important objectives of deep learning is to ensure that every bit of object recognition is embedded in the processor in the vehicle itself and is not dependent on the internet cloud. Of course, we hope Audi will not incorporate some driver thought processes into this deep learning technique! – with files from Newspress kmorgan@driveway.ca

many others – my wife and two young daughters especially – sacrificed and

pulled together to give me the space I needed to do so,” said Sinnott, a gradu-

Walk beats goal target The Nanaimo chapter of the MS Society of Canada raised more than $44,000 at its annual walk in May. Eighteen registered teams and more than 130 walkers helped the charity exceed its pre-walk goal. The 90 volunteers helped provide energy to the walkers as well as ensuring the event was successful. Top fundraising teams included Anne’s Adventurers (youth team) raising $2,700; Team Eilleen Thorne (family and friends team) raising $16,000; Dovers Divas (corporate team) raising $1,800; and Tracey Potkins (individual) raising $10,000. The Scotiabank MS Walk, which took place in more than 20 locations across the province, offered individuals and teams the chance to celebrate hope, while raising money for ground-breaking, Canadian-led research and services and programs so that Canadians affected by MS have the best quality life possible until a cure is found.

Blanket call for support The Nanaimo chapter of Blankets for Canada needs volunteers to help to pick up and sort donations. Blankets for Canada is a volunteer society dedicated to giving blankets to people who are in need of warmth. Since 2002, the Nanaimo Chapter has delivered more than 4,300 blankets to organizations here in the city that work with those in need. For the sixth year in a row, the 2014 output was more than 400 blankets. They went to recipients such as Clearview Centre, the Canadian Mental Health Association, Tillicum Lelum Friendship Centre, the Women’s Centre and several Christmas hamper programs. Volunteers are needed to pick up squares at Michaels Arts and Craft Store and Volunteer Nanaimo, sort them into groups of 48 and supply them to other volunteers who sew or crochet them together. This requires some storage space and the ability to deliver to volunteers who do not have transportation. Some experience crocheting or knitting and a sense of colour would be useful. The group could also use help in sewing labels on finished blankets, storing them and delivering to local organizations. Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to contact Charlene at 250-716-2177.

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To Darren. He is a fast, nice, lovely cashier at customer service at the London Drugs store at Port Place shopping centre.

BOUQUET To Mustafa at Kebap for bringing authentic rotisserie donair to Nanaimo. Your seasonings and marinade were so delicious and you were so friendly. I hope your new business does as well as you deserve.

BEEF To the continuing Colliery dams soap opera. The script is weak, the acting is lacklustre and the drama has been overplayed. It’s time to cancel it. BOUQUET To the wonderful lady at the recycling bottle depot on Hayes Road who is always friendly. BEEF to the Nanaimo B.C. SPCA for promoting its residents to adopt a cat and let it be an indoor-outdoor kitty. If our cats are kept inside, they would not only be healthier, but wouldn’t get lost and put back in the SPCA system.

BEEF To the young nurse who managed WCB every summer for the past seven years. Way to go. BOUQUET To Woodgrove’s Hallmark store. Thank you for your generosity. Love the colours.

BOUQUET To all the sponsors and volunteers for organizing and supporting Bike to Work Week.

BEEF To the snitch in our mobile home park. He goes up and down the park all day to find a problem and then the manager comes to question a situation the snitch reported. Not nice.

BEEF To the family restaurant in the north end. This location has consistently bad service and undertrained staff. We won’t be back.

BOUQUET To Ken and staff at Island veterinary hospital for the way I was treated when I took Scrapy Doo in when he was sick and found out that he was shot with a pellet gun.

BOUQUET To Ro Bi and Yale at Walmart for exceptional customer service.

BOUQUET To Ms. Adelborg at Randerson Ridge Elementary School for arranging the Grade 6 Camp Quanoes field trip and to parents and chaperones who accompanied. The children had a great time.

BOUQUET To Deryn at Woodlands Secondary School. Four ladies arrived too early for the tea. They let us sit in an empty classroom. You were so pleasant. BOUQUET To Peter at the Running Room. Your customer service was excellent. You dealt with a shoe problem in a professional and considerate manner. BOUQUET To Feathers B.C. A family emergency came upon us and one phone call to Feathers settled my problem with 20 birds of various sizes. Homes were found for my babies until the emergency eases. BOUQUET To the three ladies and one gentleman who tried to retrieve my keys locked in my little green car, especially the one who drove me home to get a coat hanger and the other who turned my change purse in to the service desk.

BOUQUET Profound gratitude to the staff of the ICU at Nanaimo Regional Hospital for their unconditional dedication, care and expertise in saving my best friend’s life this past February. You never gave up and now we celebrate life thanks to the ICU.

BOUQUET To Dr. Kirily Park who works long hours and yet never fails to smile, reassure and comfort her patients. You are amazing.

BOUQUET To the students of the council at Woodlands Secondary School. You put on a beautiful tea for the Mid-Island Abilities and Independent Living Society. The music provided by the three students was great.

BOUQUET A heartfelt thank you to a lady in McDonald’s. She saw that I needed help, and came right over to assist me. Not a word was spoken. Only genuine smiles between us.

BOUQUET To caring staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Everyone from emergency, ICU and CCU were kind, helpful and had a smile on their faces at all times. BOUQUET To Deb at Dickinson Tim Hortons for your sweet and kind manner and friendly attitude.

BOUQUET To Camella at Superette when I had a dreadful cough she purchased ingredients and gave me a recipe for tea. Yucky, but it worked.

BOUQUET To the members of the Departure Bay Bridge Club for your thoughtfulness. Once again due to your generosity, our garden has a spectacular floral display which we are sure to enjoy all summer long.

BOUQUET A mega thank you for a job well done at the Nanaimo 315C cadets bottle drive. Your generous donations, time and efforts from the cadets and families, St. John Ambulance members, Branch 10 Royal Canadian Legion members and the community for its support helped make this venture a great success.

BOUQUET To the young woman and her mother who were walking their little dog on a trail near Seafort and Boundary. MCLAUGHLIN JOINS senior A Timbermen.

V.I. Raiders name new GM

BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The Nanaimo Timbermen have a new addition whom they expect to make an immediate impact. Forward Eli McLaughlin joined the senior A lacrosse team last week and made his WLA debut Thursday in a 9-2 road loss against the New Westminster Salmonbellies. McLaughlin was chosen by the Timbermen in this past winter’s draft, taken second overall. “It’s nice when someone picks you up that high and you kind of respect that and come and play,” said McLaughlin. The T-men are excited about what the forward can add to the mix up front. “He’s a natural goal scorer, so we expect him to score goals, and if he doesn’t score goals, we expect him to set up goals…” said Kaleb Toth, Timbermen coach. “But it’s not just that. He demands attention from other teams’ top defensive players and when he does that, other guys tend to get freed up.” McLaughlin is coming off his rookie season in the National Lacrosse League, where he was fifth in team scoring on

the Colorado Mammoth and played with premier talent including Adam Jones and John Grant, Jr. “It was a great experience and hopefully I can translate that to summer league here,” McLaughlin said. He’s another lefthander on a Timbermen team with tons of firepower on that side of the floor – Cody Bremner, Brody Eastwood and Cayle Ratcliff are all lefties, too. That’s a good situation to have, not a

problem, said the coach. “It’s just making them find the rhythm, finding what combinations work the best, finding what roles guys are willing to do,” Toth said. McLaughlin is versatile up front and should be able to add a few different elements to the offence. “I definitely like to shoot from the shooter’s spot, I like to make moves off-ball, set picks and get to the greasy areas and get the payoff,” he said.

I just love the game and I can’t get away from it. As he adjusts to the Timbermen systems, he’ll play a simple game and see if he can “find a groove” with different guys, he said.

He was excited to get out there. “I love the sport. Why else would I come back out here to get beat up more? I just love the game and I can’t get away from it,” McLaughlin said. “Hopefully I come in, score some goals and help the team string some wins together.” GAME ON … The Timbermen host the Coquitlam Adanacs this Sunday (June 14) at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

The V.I. Raiders added to their off-field team last week, naming Merv Unger as general manager of the Canadian Junior Football League club. The GM of the Raiders does not oversee player personnel, but rather handles business relations. “I look forward to building the Raiders’ stature in Nanaimo,” said Unger in a team press release. “It is a community operation with an extremely enviable track record on both the local, provincial and national scene.” Unger worked in the newspaper industry and was a Nanaimo city councillor. “Merv has always been very active in the community, and he knows the business community,” said Hadi Abassi, Raiders vicepresident.

Curling sponsor draws attention Berwick Retirement Communities was right on the button this past season. Berwick was selected last week as the Curl B.C. Sponsor of the Year for its title sponsorship of the Curl B.C. masters championships this past season at the Nanaimo Curling Centre.

Bianchin also coached the Nanaimo Clippers in the B.C. Junior Hockey League in the 1982-83 and 1983-84 seasons. Legendary lacrosse goalie Fred Fulla was the second of this year’s inductees. Active in many sports, Fulla gained fame playing goal for the Nanaimo Timbermen when they joined the Senior A league in 1951. The team won only four games that first season, but Fulla in goal was spectacular, and earned Rookie of the Year honours. The following year he set a record that still stands by facing 1,492 shots on net. In 1954 and 1955, Fulla was the winner of the Leo Nicholson Trophy as the best goalkeeper in B.C. Senior A lacrosse. His nickname was

Fabulous Fred and he seemed unbeatable. The Timbermen gradually built a competitive team around Fulla and in 1956 he backstopped Nanaimo to the ultimate goal of winning the Mann Cup national title. Fulla was the hero of the city, and a special Fred Fulla Night was held at Civic Arena. Fulla retired from Senior A lacrosse in 1962. His 11-year career boasted 332 games played with an amazing shot-saved percentage of nearly 71 per cent. In 1982, he was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Fabulous Fred died in 2001. I was fortunate to have known him as a personal friend and it was an honour for me to present his induction plaque to his brother Norm. Soccer referee Ed Johnson and soccer player Harry Manson were also inducted into the Nanaimo Sports Hall of Fame. Please see next Thursday’s edition of the News Bulletin for their stories.
