A wide variety of people attended the June 2 opening of the three Iskut River run of river projects built by Calgary energy company AltaGas. Just a few of those people included, from the left, AltaGas chair David Cornhill, provincial aboriginal affairs and reconciliation minister John Rustad, provincial energy minister Bill Bennett, Terrace mayor Carol Leclerc and Chad Day, the president of the Tahltan Central Council, Mary Dennis and Nancy McGhee.
Hydro projects are officially opened TERRACE - Nearly $1 billion of capital expenditure in northwestern B.C. was recognized June 2 with the official opening of three run-of-river power projects along the Iskut River developed by Calgary-based energy company AltaGas. The largest of the three – the Forrest Kerr facility at 195 megawatts and the smallest, Volcano Creek, at 16 megawatts – began producing power last year while the 66-megawatt McLymont Creek facility is to be finished this year. On hand for the opening were members from the Tahltan First Nation, on whose traditional territory the projects are located, Tahltan Central Council president Chad Day, energy and mines minister Bill Bennett, aboriginal relations and reconciliation minister John Rustad and AltaGas chairman and chief executive officer David Cornhill. Power produced by the facilities is being sold to BC Hydro and feeds into the provin-
cial grid through a substation at Bob Quinn, the end point of BC Hydro’s Northwest Transmission Line which itself was finished last August. Speaking after the opening, energy minister Bill Bennett called the three projects a crucial addition to northwestern B.C. infrastructure. “Without these projects we wouldn’t have a Northwest Transmission Line,” said Bennett. AltaGas paid a lump sum and is making annual payments which together will total $180 million toward the $716 million cost of the Northwest Transmission Line. Its power sales deal with BC Hydro is for 60 years. The 287kv line is also expected to lead to other northwestern developments, chiefly mining projects. And having a power source such as the AltaGas northwest projects adds a level of supply security, Bennett added. “They’re a great safety net. If you have

an outage or something somewhere down the line, we now have a closer power source for projects in the area,” he said. Bennett also pointed to the agreements struck between AltaGas and the Tahltan Central Council for each of the three projects as a boost to the northwestern economy and as a stable revenue source for the Tahltan. “There are financial benefits, there are other benefits. This shows the value of a strong working relationship,” he said. The two economic benefits agreements for McLymont Creek and Volcano Creek alone are to bring in an estimated $560 million in total financial benefits to the Tahltan people over the decades-long life of the projects, the Tahltan Central Council has stated. The benefits include revenue sharing, profit sharing, scholarships and, in the case of the Volcano Creek facility, partial ownership by the Tahltan.

No cuts to Rupert surgical services bcclassified.com By Shaun Thomas
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT While Northern Health is continuing to investigate a consultant’s recommendation to move to a hub-and-spoke model for healthcare in the Northwest, Northern Health’s chief operating officer for the Northwest Health Services Delivery Area says the organization is committed to keeping surgical and specialty services at the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital. “We are clear that for Prince Rupert, given the size of its population and the outlying communities Prince Rupert serves including Haida Gwaii, there is a core set of services that are required now and into the future. There is no question a surgical program will remain in Prince Rupert and those services need to include obstetrics, gynaecology, general surgery and internal medicine,” said Penny Anguish, noting that maintaining those services goes beyond just the medical options offered in Prince Rupert. “We know that if we don’t sustain that type of surgical program in Prince Rupert, that has some effects on the ability to keep a very adequate general practice and family physician population. If they don’t have a certain level of backup, that changes
who is willing to come to a community. The physicians have been very clear about that with us.” A reduction of surgical services in Prince Rupert may be off the table, but the idea of moving to a hub-and-spoke model presented in a surgical services review prepared by a third party consultant is one Northern Health’s executive is continuing to examine.
“It wasn’t surprising that hub and spoke came up in that review because it is a fairly commonly used model in other jurisdictions. Northern Health hasn’t used that model as a normal approach to managing how we organize services ... It has been interpreted as everything goes to the hub while the spokes do much less and that doesn’t have to be the case,” said Anguish,
who added that other recommendations in the report related to service improvements have already been implemented. “The contentious recommendation is the one for a hub and spoke model ... that recommendation has been clearly marked in documents outside of the organization and internally stating that [it] would be investigated further,

TERRACE - The provinced says it’s going to sign agreements with organizations to increase the amount of licensed child-care spaces. The Kermode Friendship Society is to receive $499,721 to create 62 spaces – 12 for infants and 50 for children aged three to five years – at its Kermode Child Care Centre. And in Thornhill, the Rock Christian Community non-denominational church is to receive $380,885 for 56 spaces – 12 for infants/toddlers, 24 for children aged three to five years and 20 for school-age children – in the school district’s closed Copper Mountain Elementary school. The Gitanmaax band is to receive $500,000 for 34 spaces at Gitanmaax Nursery School – 12 infant/toddler spaces and 22 preschool spaces.
along with some consultation ... we don’t have a firm timeline. The framework for how we would proceed with looking at that one needs some more discussion regarding how we would do the consultation and what the investigation would mean.” Anguish said Northern Health continues to discuss with staff how to further investigate the model.

KITIMAT - On June 9, Unifor 2300 and the District of Kitimat announced that a tentative Collective Agreement had been reached. Details are sparse on the new agreement, and both sides have said there won’t be further comment until ratification is complete. Kitimat Council was expected to vote on the agreement on June 10.
It wasn’t immediately known when union membership would vote on the agreement but the process was expected to only take up to a few days. If ratified the new collective agreement will mark the end of an over-100 day strike, perhaps the longest municipal strike in B.C.’s history. The lengthy strike resulted in the shutting down of civic recreation and other facilities and the cancellation of athletic events and other annual events of interest.

Prince Rupert Golf Club in the midst of staff recruitment By Kevin Campbell THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - An inordinate amount of sunshine graced Prince Rupert skies for the month of May and early June and it made for some unique experiences on the links for North Coast golfers. “It’s great, the course is playing totally different because now your ball doesn’t just stop where it lands. It actually bounces and rolls and it’s making the course play quite differ-
ent,” said Prince Rupert Golf Club president Fred Hainstock last week. It’s not just the greens that are going through some changes. The golf club is going through a hiring process and has shortlisted applications for two positions – a golf course superintendent and a club pro/manager. Longtime Pro Shop manager Judy Fraser recently stepped down from the position in late May and Hainstock believes the club should have their new staff in place at a lat-
er date. “I spent a week [in the Pro Shop] myself to help us get organized a little bit and we’ve got some bodies in place here ... It’s hard to say [when the timing of both hires will be announced], it just depends on the process,” added the president. “We do have half a dozen [applications for the superintendent position] we have to look at to go through the process of shortlisting and then we’re moving forward but
“The course is playing totally different.” Fred Hainstock it’s not going to happen overnight.” The golf club has been without a club pro for a couple seasons now and Hainstock described the process to find a new, permanent pro

KITIMAT - Kitimat will still celebrate Canada Day this year, even if the municipal strike put a wrench in the usual proceedings. Thankfully the Kinsmen Club will continue on with their usual Canada Day tradition by hosting the Canada Day Parade. The Kinsmen head up the parade each year, and regardless of if there was to be a strike July 1 or not, the club is able to organize it without using District resources. The only thing they needed was permission from town council to close the road for the event, which they’ve received. Otherwise they’ve received a number of donations and support from local businesses to keep the event going. The route will remain the same as it always is, starting at Mountainview Square and ending on Peace Street behind Riverlodge. That will effective-

Helping Your Pets Help the People of Nepal As many clients of the Kitimat Veterinary Hospital are aware, I have been trekking in Nepal on two occasions over the last few years. The Nepalese people are a mix of cultures which are predominantly Hindu and Buddhist living harmoniously together. In my experience, the Nepalese people are friendly, generous and kind, in spite of the fact that the average per capita income in Nepal is 730$US. The earthquake, which caused mass devastation on the 25th April, 2015 was 7.8 magnitude with an aftershock on the 26th of 6.7. TERRACE - To mark the 25th anniversary of the University of Northern British Columbia, hundreds of people gathered at its Terrace campus June 2 to witness the planting of a western red cedar. It’s one of 16,000 to be planted around the north in honour of the same number of people who signed a petition in the 1980s advocating for the formation of a university to serve the north. The significance of
the tree-planting was expressed in an address by Phil Burton, the university’s northwest administrator and ecology professor. “This is a manifestation of the resolve,” said
Burton of the continued success of the university that is based in Prince George but has satellite campuses in Quesnel and Fort St. John in addition to Terrace. A second cedar was

Federal review of LNG terminal placed on hold once again By Shaun Thomas
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PORT EDWARD - The federal environmental review of Pacific NorthWest LNG’s Lelu Island terminal has been put on hold once again by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA). The federal body posted an update on the project website on June 2 indicating it had asked Pacific NorthWest LNG to provide further information “in order to respond to the agency’s information request of Feb. 23, 2015” — a request that included examining the project’s potential impact to sediment transport, hydrodynamic changes and the ef-
fects of those on fish and fish habitat on Flora Bank. In response to that request, the company undertook a 3D modelling study using Delft3D methodology that looked at sediment movement during a five-year period and in the conditions of a 20 and 50 year storm. That study “does not indicate a net change in erosion or deposition patterns, nor does the model suggest long-term loss of sand or increased sedimentation of Flora Bank by fine silt materials”. However, CEAA said more information is needed for the assessment. “On June 2, 2015, the agency sent a follow-up letter to the proponent, Pacific North-
West LNG Ltd., indicating that, in the view of the agency and federal experts at Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Natural Resources Canada, more detailed 3D modelling information is required to complete the environmental assessment and prepare the report with respect to the environmental effects of the project. Although many aspects of the previous information request have been addressed, the 3D modeling work requires updating to increase certainty in the results. Other information is also required to meet the requirements identified in the environmental impact statement guidelines as they relate to, effects on current use of Aboriginal fisheries for traditional purposes, effects on marine mammals and effects
of dredged material disposal,” said spokesperson Kate Fish. While the clock may be stopped on the environmental assessment, Pacific NorthWest LNG senior corporate affairs advisor Spencer Sproule said the company is keeping active. “Pacific NorthWest LNG will continue to work constructively and diligently with the regulator, area First Nations and other stakeholders to answer outstanding questions regarding our Environmental Impact Statement.“In parallel, this work will complement our record of extensive consultation with area residents, stakeholders and First Nations that has resulted in significant design changes to the project.”

Quick Facts
National Aboriginal Day celebrates Canada’s Indigenous culture and the achievements made by the country’s Aboriginal peoples. Canada’s National Aboriginal Day is annually held on June 21 to celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding achievements of the nation’s Aboriginal peoples. There are three Aboriginal groups in Canada – the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Background The Canadian Constitution recognizes three groups of Aboriginal peoples: Indians (First Nations), Inuit and Métis. Although these groups share many similarities, they each have their own distinct heritage, language, cultural practices and spiritual beliefs. Many people have pushed for a national day to recognize and celebrate Canada’s Aboriginal peoples and cultures prior to 1996. For example, in 1982 the National Indian Brotherhood (now the Assembly of First Nations) called for June 21 to be National Aboriginal Solidarity Day. In 1995 the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples recommended for a National First Peoples Day to be designated. The Sacred
Assembly, a national conference of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people, called for a national holiday to celebrate the contributions of Aboriginal peoples. Canada’s governor general proclaimed the first National Aboriginal Day in 1996. In cooperation with Aboriginal organizations, the Canadian government chose June 21 for National Aboriginal Day because it was on or near the June solstice. Many of Canada’s Aboriginal peoples celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day for many generations. Na-
tional Aboriginal Day provides an opportunity to acknowledge the unique achievements of First Nations, Métis and Inuit in fields as diverse as agriculture, the environment, business and the arts. National Aboriginal Day is part of the federal Celebrate Canada program. That program includes Sainte-Jean Baptiste Day, June 24, a Quebec holiday, Canadian Multiculturalism Day which is June 27 and Canada Day, which is July 1. Canada Day at one time was known as Dominion Day until it was changed.

Proposed Terminal A Extension Project - Environmental Assessment Public comment period: Rio Tinto Alcan is proposing to construct an extension to its existing Terminal A in Kitimat, BC, so that Terminal B, formerly owned by Eurocan, can be used for other industry in the future. Rio Tinto Alcan recently submitted its Application for an Environmental Assessment Certificate to the BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO). The Application Review phase includes a 38-day public comment period from June 15 to July 23 hosted by the EAO to seek comments on the Application. This public comment period will also be used to concurrently invite comments on other permits for the proposed project, including Rio Tinto Alcan’s Application to the Ministry of Environment (MOE) for an Amendment to its existing Waste Discharge Permit: Multi-Media Permit P2-00001.
What is the Application for an Environmental Assessment Certificate? The proposed project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act, which requires proponents to undertake extensive studies to assess potential effects – environmental, economic, social, heritage and health – that might result from the proposed project. The Application provides details about these studies, potential effects and proposed mitigations.
Why is Rio Tinto Alcan seeking an Amendment to its Waste Discharge Permit? To build this project, we will need to undertake dredging to prepare the area for construction and ensure the seabed is deep enough to safely accommodate vessels. We are applying for an amendment to our existing Waste Discharge Permit to dispose of dredgeate on our site. Learn more: Community participation and input received to date is much appreciated. If you would like to learn more about these applications and opportunities to provide comments, please visit our website at www.riotintoalcaninbc.com. If you have questions for us, you can email us at TerminalAExtension@riorinto.com or call us at 250 632 4712.
Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Terminal A Extension Project
Open House and Invitation to Comment Rio Tinto Alcan (Proponent) is proposing to construct and operate a replacement infrastructure project including an extension to an existing marine terminal, a barge berth, tug dock and laydown facility. The proposed Terminal A Extension Project (proposed Project) is to be located at the Port of Kitimat and within proximity to the District of Kitimat and the Haisla Nation Kitamaat Village and includes marine dredging and disposal of dredge material. The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act. The Proponent has now submitted its application to obtain an environmental assessment certificate, which is required before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project. In order to provide information to the public about the Application, and to receive comments from the public, Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia (EAO) invites the public to attend an Open House to be held: Kitimat Valley Institute 1352 Alexander Avenue Kitimat, BC on: June 23, 2015 from: 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at:
EAO accepts public comments in the following ways: • By Online Form at http://www.eao.gov.bc.ca/pcp/index.html • By Mail: Teresa Morris Project Assessment Manager Environmental Assessment Office PO Box 9426 Stn Prov Govt Victoria BC V8W 9V1 • By Fax: Fax: 250-387-2208 An electronic copy of the Application and information regarding the environmental assessment process are available at www.eao.gov.bc.ca. Copies of the Application are also available for viewing at these locations:
and
Rio Tinto Alcan’s Community Office 254 City Centre Mall Kitimat, BC Kitimat Community Library 940 Wakashan Ave. Kitimat, BC
There are 38 days for the submission of comments by the public in relation to the Application. The comment period will begin on June 15, 2015 and end on July 23, 2015. All comments received during this comment period will be considered.
The Proponent has submitted an application for an amendment to the Multi Media Waste Discharge Permit P2-00001 (otherwise known as AMS#100138) for the disposal and storage of dredge material and has requested the permit application be reviewed concurrently under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act, Concurrent Approval Regulation.
The intention of seeking public comments is to ensure all potential effects – environmental, economic, social, heritage and health – that might result from the proposed Project are identified for consideration, and the effectiveness of proposed mitigations, as part of the assessment process.
This permit application is also available on the EAO’s website at www.eao.gov.bc.ca and at the above locations. Comments on the permit application may also be submitted to the EAO during the comment period as described above.
NOTE:
All submissions received by EAO during the comment period in relation to the proposed Project are considered public and will be posted to EAO website.

t is with great sadness that we share our loss of our wife, mother, daughter and sister in her fight with pancreatic cancer. Lucy passed away peaceful, in the early hours of May 30, 2015 at Prince Rupert Regional Hospital, with her husband Dave, at her bedside. She will be dearly missed by her husband, Dave, her daughters and son-in-law, Nicole, Andrew, and Stephanie, her mother, Rose, her brothers and sister-in-laws, Terry and Susan, and John and Wendy. As well as many family and friends. Dave and the family would like to say a huge thank you Dr. Ikari, Dr. Nel, Dr. Renouf and Dr. Tse, and the many amazing nurses who cared for Lucy during her last days. Another huge thank you to the chemotherapy nurses, Jen, Miko and Joan, for taking care of Lucy during her treatment, as well as many of the emergency and ambulatory care nurses. Without these people and their support, Lucy and her family would have not been able to get through this journey together alone. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Jean C. Barber Lodge in Vancouver, BC, where Lucy stayed during her treatment. Please call (604) 879-9131 for further information on how you can donate directly to the Lodge. Lucy will be laid to rest with her father, Michael Sawka, at Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria, BC on June 20, 2015.

Election results for Haisla Nation Council By Cécile Favron
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
KITAMAAT VILLAGE - On June 1, Haisla First Nation voted in five new councillors to the board in Kitamaat Village. There were seven candidates running for the five open counsellor positions. The new counsellors are Willard Grant (re-elected), Ramond Green, Trevor Martin, Freddy Ringham, and Kevin Stewart. Former counsellors Joanne
Ross and Russell Ross were also running, but were not reelected. The ten counsellors are elected for four-year terms, but elections are held every two years. The elections for counsellor positions are usually staggered with five new counsellors elected every two years. However, the last election held on June 6, 2013 elected ten counsellors for a four year term.
Chief elections officer Lawrence Lewis explained that the last Haisla election “was the first election under the new code, a one time event.” The five counsellors who garnered the lowest votes in the 2013 election thus had their terms cut short at two years. The five counsellors, Russell Ross, Henry Amos Senior, Godfrey Grant, Joanne Ross, and Willard Grant, ended their terms on May 31. Joanne Ross, Russell Ross, and Willard Grant all ran for
re-election, but only Grant was re-elected again for another four year term. Elections for the Chief Councillor are held separately from the elections for the ten councillors. With the results of this years election in, the ten counsellors are Crystal Smith, Lucille Harms, Margaret Grant, Taylor Cross, Brenda Duncan, Willard Grant, Ramond Green, Trevor Martin, Freddy Ringham, and Kevin Stewart.

TERRACE - Local group Won Ton Feather made its debut at the May 31 session of the second annual WestFest held on property east of Terrace. That’s Layne Clarke on keyboard, Adam Alander singing and Myles Anderson on the far right.
Terrace’s Relay for Life raises more than $100,000 TERRACE - The organizers of this year’s Relay for Life couldn’t be happier with how the 16th annual event turned out. Over 300 people participated and the community raised over $102,000. “Relay this year was fantastic and a big success,” said Canadian Cancer Society Leadership Chair Jessica Gaus. “Beautiful weather made for a great spring Relay event filled with a lot of fun, wonderful food, and fantastic entertainment.” The May 30 event kicked off at 10:00 a.m. at Skeena Middle School with the traditional survivor ceremony before the survivor lap, this year lead by Majagaleehl Nisga’a Marching Band. “Definitely one of the highlights of the day,” said Gaus. The day-long fundraising event is a chance for the community to come together and raise money and awareness for the fight against cancer. Participants walk or run together around a track or path at a local school, park or fairground, passing a baton to their fellow participants. This year’s theme “Relaying through the Decades” was well-re-
ceived with many people wearing bell-bottoms, tie dye shirts, and side ponytails. “Individual events at this year’s celebration included fundraisers held by individual teams in tents, a flash mob, free yoga and zumba, a watermelon eating contest (one of the biggest highlights!), a kids activity tent, local live music, and more,” she said. “And one of the new features this year was the ‘Blue Couch’ Relay video, filmed by Robert Pictou from CFTK, which captures the stories of why people Re-
lay.” she said. “Everyone has lost someone to cancer and the video highlights the people we are all celebrating, remembering, and fighting for - a mother, an uncle, a brother, a friend. “The most memorable and emotional events for me were the survivor’s lap honoring cancer survivors and the luminary lap honoring those who are no longer with us.” In Terrace “there were over 300 participants and 36 teams that were registered – including survivors, caregivers, and supporters – who participated in
Terrace’s 16th Relay for Life. We also had more come on the day of Relay that didn’t register,” said Gaus. The top five fundraisers are Terrace CCS Resource Center, Dream Catchers, Freedom Fighters, Together, and Lakelse Dragons and the entire community raised over $102,000 – short of the $150,000 goal but “the number continues to climb as last minute totals come on.” Donations are still being accepted at www. relayforlife.ca/terrace for the rest of the summer.

Rupert racers excel at Terrace drag races By Kevinc Campbell THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - During the Terrace Drag Race Association’s (TDRA) first annual race on June 6, Prince Rupert’s best result came in the form of a newcomer to the super pro category and his first ever trophy in it. Terry Frizzell claimed second-place in the division with his 1966 front-engine dragster. With super pro having the fastest cars out of the three categories (super pro, pro and junior), Frizzell said the adjustment has been quite the experience, upgrading over pro. “The super pro are the faster cars and they sometimes have electronic delay boxes and things like that inside ... There’s very stiff competition. The faster the guys are, the more money they have in their cars and they definitely know what they’re doing,” he said. Frizzell used a 350 cubic-inch Chevrolet engine with 400 horsepower and is in good shape for the season-ending cumulative points competition that TDRA
Sailing added
holds over three annual races in the Terrace area and two in Houston. “There was 14 cars in that class so we had to go about four rounds. It was 14 and then 7 and then it just goes from there,” said Frizzell. The Rupertite’s fastest time recorded was 6.64 seconds in an eighth-mile – 105 miles per hour. While driving, Frizzell and the other racers don helmets and firesuits. His front-engine dragster, which Frizzell has raced for 22 years, requires regular upkeep like all cars that the TDRA sees come through the Terrace airport – the site of many of the races. “Yup, you’ve got to go through it and make sure everything’s tight and nothing’s leaking,” he said. “So I changed the oil, changed the spark plugs and cleaned it.” Frizzell’s dragster, which isn’t street-legal, was driven to the airport using an enclosed trailer, a transportation method many racers use for the race. After more than a month of blue skies and no trace of liquid sunshine to be seen, the North Coast’s fickle climate roared back with a vengeance on Sunday morning, whipping up gales of wind and downpours lasting hours. “We would liked to have quit after nine [holes],” said Haida Gwaii’s Fowler. “But then it cleared off and the back nine was wonderful.” The visiting Fowler, who had been in town since last Tuesday, won the overall low net title of the jubilee and a familiar face claimed the overall low gross. Rose Holkestad, co-winner of the earlier His and Hers Tournament, took top spot in low gross, carding a 36-hole total of 172. Fowler’s net score was 142 after a handicap of 25. While most participants, 33 in all coming from Smithers, Houston, Burns Lake, Terrace, Kitimat and Haida Gwaii, saw their totals climb in the blustery second day, a skilled few beat the odds and lowered their scores after Sunday’s challenging conditions. “All of a sudden, now you’re having to take two or three more clubs just to hit the hole or get close to a hole,” said low gross winner Holkestad after finishing her round. “Our course isn’t as pristine as it has been – we’re struggling with that a bit this year ... but [my game felt] fantastic. Actually my first round [Satur-
TERRACE - The Terrace Northmen opened the regular rugby season with a win at home against the Williams Lake Rustlers May 23 – the first time they’d beat the Rustlers in years. “The guys were really happy about that,” said Northman Adam Linteris of the 27-19 win. “It was a real grind so it was nice to come out with that W for sure.” The game, as expected, was “very, very physical,” he said, with Williams Lake bringing a solid squad – although without some of their key guys because of work committments – and the Northmen with a strong bench. “There was a lot of midfield play and midfield stands, goalline stands, things like that,” said Linteris. “There were few big breaks in the game – luckily for us the big breaks seemed to come on our end.” Brady Champoux clocked two tries before rookie Adam Sarich grabbed a try. Then Walker Main kicked two dropkick goals to give the Northmen a pretty substantial lead towards the end. But the Rustlers didn’t let up, closing the gap as the Northmen tired out. “A real physical game,” said Linteris. “Williams Lake is always really strong. They didn’t bring a series of their top guys, they were out working and doing that, but they still brought a really strong team. Basically anytime you play those guys you have to be prepared for a really hard game.” Williams Lake picked two man of the matches for the game – a forward and a back – with Ryan Watson named the forward and Werner Pienaar named the back. Linteris said that the win was a

I shot a 38. It was just incredible.” Fowler’s game was on point as well. The islander has gained experience through the couple courses on Haida Gwaii. “I don’t get to golf very often, about as often as I can on those two courses, but it does not compare ... It’s just beautiful here. It’s not at its best right now, but it’s beautiful,” she said. The Championship Flight’s
first and second low gross titles went to Karin Williamson and Janet Sheppard respectively. First and second low net went to Janice Malkow and Fiona Kerbrat. In the First Flight, Maria Wells took the first low gross title and Selma Standring grabbed second. First low net went to Carol Schaeffer and second to Esther Pretulac. Within the Second Flight, Andrea Pollock claimed first low gross and Dorothy Wharton second. For low net, Carol Bryant grabbed first and Mary Murphy second.

It was nice to see that it was a full team victory and not just a starting line up victory,” he continued. The team travelled to Prince George last weekend – look for those results in next week’s issue – and heads to Prince Rupert this weekend for Seafest. Then they have a bit of a break before travelling to Williams Lake at the end of the month. The next chance to catch the Northmen at home will be July 11 when the team hosts Prince George. Linteris said the team is always working on getting more people out to watch the games – for support and for the potential new recruits.
Alcan helps power locals to the BC Seniors Games By Cecile Favron
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
KITIMAT - Last week Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) presented a cheque for $2,000 to the local BC Seniors Games Society to assist participants with costs for the 55+ BC Games to be held August 25-29 in North Vancouver. The 55+ Games is an annual sporting event for British Columbians age 55 and over. The competitors are placed in five-year age bracket categories and compete in over twenty different sports. Seniors are responsible for their
own travel to and from the games and this is why Rio Tinto Alcan made the donation to the society for this year’s games held in the Lower Mainland. “We don’t want anyone to not be able to attend the games for financial reasons,” explained zone director Bill Whitty of the decision to team up with RTA to make the games happen for seniors in northwestern BC. The local BC Seniors Games Society is called Zone 10 and encompasses the Kitimat, Terrace, Prince Rupert and Haida Gwaii area. Over 100 seniors from the
northwest area are planning to attend this year’s games and the club usually tallies more than 150 members across the region. “We feel that the Seniors’ Games is the second best health care program the province has to offer,” Whitty said, citing that their oldest member, 93, is going on her 28th consecutive year in the games. “That means that the age range we have is from 55 to 93,” he said. At last year’s games, the northwest team took home 41 metals in total of which 15 were gold, 13 were silver, and 13 were bronze. And the games do more than
just promote physical health and award metals at the games, says Whitty. “For the most part in our zone, we look at the games as a place to have friendly participation and comradery, winning a metal is just a bonus,” he added. To become part of the BC Seniors Games Society, participants only need to satisfy the requirement that they are 55 years or older. The majority of the sports don’t even require qualifying rounds, the only exception is if too many seniors want to participate in a certain sport at the games — in which case there is a play-off. Whitty says that it is
very rare that anyone is excluded from the games. Competitors need only to be part of the BC Seniors Games Society and attend some of the society’s meetings to attend the games. Whitty encourages all seniors to come out and see what the games are about at the society’s next meeting in Kitimat on June 27. “It is too late for these games, but it is certainly not too early to consider the 2016 games to be held in Port Coquitlum,” Whitty explained. Any seniors who want to join can visit www.bcseniorsgames.org/ zones/.
