Safety on two wheels key for kids KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The earlier kids learn bike safety the safer they’ll be, said Const. Jamie Wasylien, the Port Alberni RCMP’s youth liaison officer. “When you teach a kid young enough that there’s a safe way to ride a bike and a responsible way to ride a bike, hopefully they carry that through to when they are an adult,” Wasylien said. It’s especially important with the prevalence of cycling as a form of commuting rather than just for recreation. “Now that biking to work and biking around the city is more prominent, it’s nice that they’ve been taught the proper hand signal or the proper way to approach a crosswalk or the proper way to go around the vehicle.” According to the Canadian Bike Helmet Association, children between the ages of five and 14 account for half of the 150 Canadians who die from bike injuries per year. The ICBC Bike Smarts manual states that “every year, over 50,000 children are seriously injured in bike-related mishaps.” It’s not just the kids who benefit. “The importance of teaching the kids the hand signals and to recognize the street signs is obviously for their safety,” Wasylien said. Kids taking part in the bike rodeo will hopefully keep the bike safety lessons they learn for when they’re adults driving on the roads. “There’s also an onus on the driver to understand what a bicycle’s going to do and not have to guess,”

he said. “Teaching an adult can be done, of course, but having a good base as a child is always best.” Wasylien hopes that the parents who came out to the bike rodeo will take away a powerful lesson. “People need to understand that just because it’s not your daughter or son doesn’t mean it’s not someone else’s,” he said. “We all have a responsibility as citizens to make sure that kids get home safe if they’re on their bikes.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com twitter.com/AlberniNews

Five Acre Shaker duo want to shake again KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Lance Goddard hopes his five acres will be shaking once again in Beaver Creek this summer. The Five Acre Shaker weekend outdoor music festival was a success last year and benefited the Zattzoo Project while garnering not a single complaint. But this year, it was almost curtailed after fierce debate by the AlberniClayquot Regional District, all because organizers Goddard and Jess Towers want to grow the event. Last year, the event was capped at 500. This year, Goddard and Towers want to double attendance and they’re asking

for a temporary use permit to allow it to happen in a residential zone. Beaver Creek director John McNabb and the Beaver Creek advisory planning commission came back with a recommendation that the summer 2015 event be scaled down due to worries that the five-acre property won’t have the capacity to handle that amount of people. “I’m concerned about the numbers,” McNabb said, adding he’s also heard concerns that the noise makes it difficult for those nearby to enjoy their weekend. The event is planned for Aug. 14-16. “I would like to suggest they look at

made a 500-person event impractical. “There’s certain costs that can’t be rolled back. To chop it in half, I don’t think that would be advantageous to the security and safety of the event.” Port Alberni Mayor Mike Ruttan spoke out in support of the event. “I live far more than

200 feet from the Fall Fair and I hear it every year. It’s just one of those things, it’s not a big deal,” said Ruttan. “We want things to happen in our community.” “There is social value to this type of thing but there also is social risk,” said McNabb. Goddard said they’ve made serious

efforts to mitigate the risks. Beer gardens will be cordoned off, Goddard said, and parking will be provided on site with no spill-over onto Beaver Creek Road. Security at the event will be at an RCMPapproved 50:1 ratio. Cherry Creek director Lucas Banton agreed with Ruttan that turning down events like these set a bad precedent. “It’s sounds like they’re doing their due diligence and I’d hate to turn something down when people are doing the right thing by asking for permission,” said Banton. “When it comes to noise pollution, I live out in Cherry Creek and I can hear the Fall Fair. Thunder in the Valley, well, there’s a lot of Thunder. These things happen—what do we want? Do we want to have activities or do

we just want to do nothing?” Goddard and Towers have received letters of support from the police department and all neighbours within 200 feet. The Beaver Creek Volunteer Fire Department has also been supportive. During last year’s event, the police received only a few noise complaints and upon patrolling the grounds, did not see any issues with how the event was run, Ruttan said. “What we’re aiming to do is just provide a platform for local musicians to be able to play and provide the community a place to come and enjoy a musical festival,” said Towers. “One hundred per cent of our profits go to charity.” And even the money that’s used to pay expenses stays within the community. “We’re able to take those funds [we raise] and surge them right back into the community,” said Towers. Prizes from the recent Youth Battle of the Bands included gift cards to local stores and sessions at local studios. The clothing line was also produced at Cloud City, another local store. “It’s almost like they all feed off of each other, one funds the other one.” Keeping things local is a priority for both Goddard and Towers, who both grew up in the Alberni Valley. “We see the potential that Port Alberni has as young people. We want to see this community flourish in a way we believe that it can,” Towers said. The duo has said they will look for a more rural location for the festival next year. The public will have a chance to weigh in on the issue for a 10-day period prior to the ACRD board making its decision.

On the surface, they look tough: a dozen leather-clad bikers roaring along the street, helmets and aviator-type sunglasses obscuring their faces, bearing names like Grizzly, Colonel and Deadly. To the children they empower, however, they are heroes. Time to move ahead and heal Mailbag: Feedback on news items Chiefs applaud move over penned salmon, demand their consent for new licences The long and emotionally painful process of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission has finally concluded and some harsh truths have come out of the report. Nothing that hasn’t already been said before, but seeing it all in one place has, we hope, had an impact. We must never forget this part of our country’s past—indeed, we agree future generations should learn about the cultural genocide that occurred so close to home, just as they learn of the Holocaust that happened half a world away. Now it is time to move on in a nurturing, empowering manner. It is time to move forward from these residential school horror stories to live new stories of healing and progress. We must honour those who we have lost through the process, celebrate those who have survived and ensure this never happens again. We hope our country may draw strength from the Truth and Reconciliation process itself; that our aboriginal neighbours may find healing in the telling of their oral history, however painful it was; and that they may find strength in the acknowledgement that what happened was wrong. The commission has made 94 recommendations that officials feel will go a long way toward healing our country. Tseshaht First Nation Chief Councillor Hugh Braker said the recommendations ‘are measured, wide ranging, constructive and, ultimately, aimed at healing and reconciliation. The government should immediately put in place a plan to implement the recommendations.’ We agree. Canada’s leaders and citizens must take these recommendations seriously, and most importantly deal with them in a timely manner. Only then can the healing begin. — Alberni Valley News

To the Editor,

We the undersigned chiefs applaud the recent federal court decision to disallow the salmon farming industry transfer of fish infected with viruses to open net pens. We understand the Minister of Fisheries can still override the Fisheries Act and allow this kind of transfer. We are in solidarity with the Wild Salmon Caravan of May 10-14, and the more than 108,888 people who signed the petition that was delivered to Premier Christy Clark on May 27 in the provincial Legislature. Both asked her to: • Not issue Licenses of Occupation to the salmon farms trying to expand in British Columbia. Wild salmon are much too important to the world to risk for an industry that refuses to contain its

waste. The salmon farming industry has lost their social license. Wild salmon that we have title and rights to are currently being exposed to untreated farmed salmon effluent throughout their migration routes along coastal British Columbia. Our fishers have witnessed too many prespawn deaths, salmon discolored with open sores, too weak to swim upstream and escaped farmed Atlantic salmon. • Governments and corporations must honour the duty to consult with, and obtain the consent of First Nation titleholders on industrial projects impacting their respective territories and Aboriginal rights. This includes salmon farming as it poses potential grave threat to

First Nations right to a fishery. Justice Bruce Cohen concluded in his commission report that fish farms may pose serious or irreversible harm to wild salmon due to disease, but his report and recommendations have been virtually ignore at all levels of government. Given the mounting evidence that fish farms on wild salmon migration routes are a threat to our wild salmon, we are writing to inform Premier Clark that the Province of B.C. must not expand existing farms, offer new licenses of occupation or renew fish farm leases without our consent. In addition, there must be immediate independent and transparent testing of farmed salmon in the hatcheries to determine whether they have

Is B.C. a Third World backwater? TOM FLETCHER B.C. Views

V

ICTORIA – We might call ourselves Super, Natural or even The Best Place on Earth, but how is B.C. viewed around the world? Ever since U.S. billionaires and their environmental clients decided more than a decade ago to supervise our society, the impression that British Columbia is a primitive colonial backwater in need of “saving” has only been reinforced. In late April, the province and coastal aboriginal leaders announced completion of marine planning areas for Haida Gwaii and the North and Central Coast. U.S. activists knew about the announcement weeks before the legislature press gallery did, and a documentary crew was sent up to advance the narrative of the saving of the “Great Bear Rainforest.” Within minutes of the announcement, the World Wildlife Fund website trumpeted the creation of the “Great Bear Sea,” continuing the penchant of outsiders for renaming large parts of B.C. to fit their marketing strategies. Unlike the “Great Bear Rainforest” land use deal of 2007, the Sierra Club, ForestEthics and Greenpeace were not represented.

Instead, Tides Canada CEO Ross McMillan sat beaming in the audience. McMillan’s role in directing U.S. foundation money to B.C. has prompted him to declare himself “a principal architect of the Great Bear Rainforest project,” although in the early years he and his staff (currently 24 people) stayed behind the scenes while Sierra, Greenpeace et al took the credit. At the event, two aboriginal leaders gave a nod to the real funder of the ongoing effort to “save” the B.C. coast, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Gordon Moore is a co-founder of Intel Corp., maker of most of the

world’s computer processor chips, now spending his vast fortune on the Amazon basin, B.C. and other “threatened” places. Other Silicon Valley and Seattle billionaires helped finance the original effort, and a strategy document surfaced in 2008 describing their plan to de-market the Alberta oilsands by creating a blockade against energy exports on our Pacific coast. That campaign has featured a fake cancer study and grossly exaggerated greenhouse gas claims compared to U.S. coal and oil production. The effort has since expanded to natural gas, with false horror stories about “fracking” finding a receptive global audience. Last week I wrote about the plan by British manufacturing conglomerate Reckitt Benckiser to buy up farms in the B.C. Interior and replant them with trees. Contrary to my description, “RB Trees for Change” isn’t participating in the dodgy European carbon credit market. They’re just doing it for global marketing purposes, covering pioneer-cleared farms of our colonial

backwater with forest for 100 years so they can advertise their soaps and cold pills as carbon neutral. Another 10,000 hectares of B.C. “saved” from destruction by benevolent foreign interests! Back to reality. B.C.’s Auditor General issued a report last week calling on the province to do more to prevent the “cumulative effects” of industrial development. A familiar example of this is the struggle to maintain caribou herds in northern B.C. The B.C. government mustered a response from the multiple ministries that have worked on this since 2010. Among other things, they noted that 90 per cent of B.C.’s vast area is now covered by regional land use plans created to manage cumulative impacts. A whopping 37 per cent of B.C. is designated as parks and protected areas for environmental and cultural values. Maybe that’s still not good enough, but it’s better than anything I can find in Europe or the U.S. That’s particularly true of California, home of Hollywood, Silicon Valley, a pipeline spill, heavy oil refining and gridlocked freeways. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press newspapers. E-mail: tfletcher@blackpress.ca

CEDAR GROVE CHURCH A Christian Community of the Reformed Church in Canada Sunday Worship Service -10:30 am Wed. 9:30am - 11am Bible Study Everyone welcome to worship with us at the 7th Day Adventist Church at

4109 Kendall St. • 250.723-7080

At this time of year we eagerly await the summer break. All the committees are winding down, the next couple of months gives us a chance to recharge and enjoy just laying back and taking the time to smell the roses. It is so easy for us to get overloaded and burnt out when demands on our time seem never ending. We become weary and burdened, and at this time it is easy to feel miserable. Jesus tells us - “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” - Matthew 11:28-30 Give yourself a break. Rest is part of the cycle of life that God ordained. It is HOLY. It isn’t sloth to take a rest. It is wisdom to recharge yourself for sustained efforts - all the wonderful and interesting things that you do will still be there.

We need to take care of what we have: David Suzuki KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The environment

needs to be prioritized now if anything is to be left for future generations, David

Suzuki told a packed Maht Mahs Gym on Tuesday night. Suzuki was there as part

of his Connecting Coastal Communities tour. “I’m going to kick

the bucket very soon, I’m at the last part of my life but what is or is not done is going to

reverberate through the lives of young people like you and even young ones like my grandchildren,” said Suzuki. “Anybody who cares about what’s going to happen to them has got to go

to all-candidates meetings, every candidate running for political office. You’ve got to say ‘what is your position? What are you going to do for my kids and my grandchildren?” reporter@albernivalleynews.com

‘We certainly got a good feeling with these fellows’: RCMP Port Alberni RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan met a couple of chapter members last month when they came to the detachment to

ask for some criminal record checks on members—every BACA member has to pass the “vulnerable sector” portion of a police record check,

she said. “We certainly got a good feeling with these fellows. There’s no information they provided to us that caused us to have

any concerns about their message or intentions,” Allan said. “If this is one avenue where there’s a number of ‘big brothers’ that...could impact a child in a positive manner,

that’s a good thing,” she said. “We certainly will work with them when they come into the community.” Above all, says Colonel, BACA is not about violence.

Members who accompany children to court are nonconfrontational and respectful of all law enforcement personnel and rules, he said. “There’s a video

on YouTube of a motorcycle gang chasing a guy down and beating him up. That’s not us. “That’s not what we do.” editor@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

Text 911 option now available KATYA SLEPIAN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Hearing- and speechimpaired residents of the Alberni Valley will soon be able to text with 911 operators. The decision follows a January 2013 announcement by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) about “enhancements to 911 services that will enable Canadians who have hearing or speech impairments to communicate with 911 call centres via text message.” In the decision, the CRTC stated that carriers were supposed to have implemented the changes by Jan. 24, 2014. However, changes have rolled out region by region

across the country and have just been implemented in the Alberni-Clayquot Regional District. The CRTC decision does not mean that individuals can simply text 911—instead, individuals must first register for the service with their wireless carrier and then when the need arises, call 911. Call centre operators will automatically detect the text 911 enabled phone and begin a text conversation. The voice call must be kept on in the background in order to not disconnect from the conversation and 911 operators will be able to pick up background noise from the phone’s location. twitter.com/AlberniNews

DEATHS

GRAY, Ronald James; It is with great sadness that we announce that Ron passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at the age of 50 years. Ron is predeceased by wife Pamela and father Clifford. Ron is survived by two wonderful and beautiful children, Josh and Kristin, sisters Rheanne, Pam, Cindy, and Lori; mother Joyce, and birth father Art, many nieces and nephews as well as other extended family and many, many dear friends – many of whom Ron considered family. Ron came to the Alberni Valley in the early 2000’s from Manitoba and worked for the HandiDart bus and then became a Real Estate Agent. Prior to this, Ron’s adventurous spirit took him all over North America working and courageously trying his hand at new skills and vocations but; Ron found the “home he had been searching for all his life when he arrived in the valley. Although he was involved in many things; The Beaufort Gang, Lions club, hobby farming, and spending time with his closest friends, his world and his heart was, above all else, invested in his beloved children. His pride and his joy and his peace revolved around them and their many activities and interests whether it be the 4H or Tae Kwon Do. Ron grew up in the equine world and he

was a natural and excellent horseman with a real cowboy spirit. An infectious and sincere grin was present in every encounter with Ron and his genuinely considerate and humbly honest nature touched many folks who were considered, by Ron, as extended family everywhere he went. At the sudden and tragic loss of his wife, Pamela, 2.5 years ago, Ron could never quite get over the overwhelming love and steadfast support he received in Port Alberni and the wave of love that flowed in from back in Manitoba. The knowledge of this love sustained him in his journey as a single father. A Celebration of Ron’s Life will be held at 2pm on Saturday, June 6, 2015 from Elim Tabernacle, 3946 Wallace St, Port Alberni, BC with Pastor Bruce Greenwood officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a Trust account for Josh and Kristin at the following locations as deemed appropriate: Immediate/short term need Port Alberni friends: Port Alberni TD Bank account 6295839 c/o Janis Joseph. Immediate/short term need Manitoba friends: Russell RBC account 5057591 transit # 04427 c/o Rheanne Gray. Many questions about long term need have been kindly put forward. This will be established in a more formal manner in time and will be discreetly communicated.

Inbrief Alberni wrestlers make Western Cdns team Dawg pound

New assistant coach for ‘Dogs

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs are very proud to announce Alex Evin is being added to the coaching staff as a fulltime assistant coach and goalie coach. Evin spent the last two seasons as the Bulldogs part-time goalie coach while coaching the Selkirk College Saints in the BCIHL as a head coach in 2014/15 and an assistant coach the previous seasons. Evin won three consecutive BCIHL championships with Selkirk College. In his five seasons with in the BCHL, Evin spent time with Powell River, Williams Lake, and Penticton, where he led the team to a Fred Page Cup Championship in 2008. Over his BCHL career, he appeared in 221 games (including playoffs).

A small group of Alberni Wrestlers made the journey to Vancouver over the weekend to participate in the Western Canada Games Team Trials at Carson Graham Secondary School. The Provincial team is open to grades 7-10 for both boys and girls. In the end three Alberni wrestlers were named to the team along with one alternate. Aaron Badovinac, Seth Price and Morgan Dagenais were all named to the team by taking top spot in their respective weight classes over the weekend. Isaac McDonald was included as an alternate to the team. Aaron Badovinac led in dominating fashion coming off

his silver medal at the cadet national championships. He went through the tournament without a point being scored against him. Head Coach John McDonald commented, “We knew that Aaron had a good chance to make the team, however to dominate in the way he did was

outstanding.” Badovinac was also recently named BC’s outstanding Cadet Wrestler of the year. Seth Price and Morgan Dagenais were both pleasant surprises to make the team. Price won two nail biting matches, including his final match to gain his spot on the team. Dagenais just finished her rugby

season and thought she would throw her hat into the ring and it paid off. Dagenais won the best two out of three series in the finals to gain her spot on the team. She will later have a wrestle off against another wrestler that was granted a petition due to injury to secure her spot to wrestle

for Team BC later in August. Isaac McDonald lost a close semi-final match and came back on the consolation side to take 3rd place in the tournament. McDonald was selected as an alternate to the team making him eligible for all the summer training with the team but not compete in the games unless someone is hurt or unable to compete later in August. Alberni club coach Chris Bodnar was impressed with what he saw.” I have not been able to make all the practices leading up to this event but could not believe the determination of our kids. There is something about being an Alberni Wrestler that is

inherent with a determination to compete and win. These kids should be proud of what they have achieved by making this team and the development opportunities this program has to offer.” The Western Canada Games development program will have the Alberni athletes continue to train through the month of July. There are many camps and competitions that will be in the USA as well as regular trips to Vancouver on weekends to practice with the Provincial team. The final competition will be to represent Team BC at the Western Canada Games in Wood Buffalo, Alberta August 7-16th.

Not hearing clearly when many people are talking? Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, System AudĂŠo V has been designed specifically to understand in group situations.

The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in company, or in the restaurant. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that are decisive when it comes to hearing things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory center of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.

Hearing sensation! Swiss researchers: AudĂŠo V is superior for conversation.

Without AudĂŠo V

With AudĂŠo V

The New Audeo V hearing aids provide considerable reduction in noise allowing you to focus on speech.

New hearing chip developed Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing aid chip that is designed to improve speech comprehension in noise, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new AudĂŠo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OSâ€? plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to

is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation. Interested people can register for a no-obligation demonstration of the AudĂŠo V by calling 888.408.7377

Every picture tells a story, say the dancers at the MacKenzie School of Dance. However, despite the ease with which society currently uses its smartphones and tablets to snap digital photos by the thousands, the current generation will be the worst recorded of all. Few if any of the resulting files make their way to a more permanent medium such as those photos preserved in any old-fashioned family photo album. The theme “Every Picture Tells a Story” provides the starting point for this year’s Ceilidh—the yearend recital for the

B.C. adds $10M to cut surgery wait times HEALTH: | Some procedures likely to be done by private clinics in an effort to cut wait times, get people into operating room sooner. JEFF NAGEL BLACK PRESS

About 1,000 more surgical procedures should be performed this summer after the health ministry allocated an extra $10 million.

relief, the province is also pursuing longerrange measures to make the surgical system more efficient. Many family doctors often refer to the same heavily booked surgeon due to reputation

or preference, while other surgeons are sometimes idle. Lake said one alternative may be to instead shift to a pool of surgeons where patients get assigned to the first one available.

Similarly, patients who face a long wait to get into their local hospital may be urged to instead get their surgery performed at another hospital an hour or so down the road where OR time is going unused.

Patients who have endured excessive waits for surgery may get into the operating room faster this summer. The province is injecting $10 million into the system to perform an extra 1,000 surgeries provincewide in an effort to reduce wait times. The extra money will be targeted for patients who have waited longer than 40 weeks for surgery, Health Minister Terry Lake said Monday. Orthopedic surgeries, cataracts, hernias, plastic surgeries and ear, nose and throat procedures will be eligible for accelerated treatment. Lake said the money will open up extra operating room time in hospitals across the province, and in some cases it will be used to contract private clinics to perform extra day surgeries. “Patients want to have their surgeries done,” Lake told reporters. “If the quality is there and if it reduces wait lists and it’s paid for and administered by the public system, I think British Columbians would agree with that approach.” Just one per cent of surgeries in B.C. were performed by private clinics using public funds in 2013. It’s not yet clear how much that might increase but Island Health said in April it’s seeking a private clinic operator to provide up to 4,000 day surgeries a year, or about 10 per cent of the region’s annual total. Further cash infusions for surgery increases are expected in the fall and early next year. Along with the promised short-term

“For patients, it’s not as convenient perhaps,” Lake said. “But it is an opportunity to have their surgery done faster.” More recruitment and training of anaesthetists and surgical nurses is also part of the long-range plan. B.C. has increased the numbers of surgeries it performs over the years, but demand has risen faster. Lake pointed to soaring demand for procedures such as hip replacements over the last 15 years as patients realize what recent medical advancements now offer them.

Each year there are more seniors who are typically living longer lives. “We know these surgeries are becoming the expectation for people who want to live a good quality of life and that is the demand we want to meet.” More than 50 of the province’s nearly 300 operating rooms are not regularly staffed, according to a health ministry discussion paper on surgical reform. It said operating rooms are generally idle because health authorities have insufficient funds to run them, but in some cases

they’re shuttered because of a lack of specialized staff such as anaesthetists or insufficient local demand. According to the provincial surgical wait time website, the typical patient is waiting 45 weeks for knee replacement surgery and up to 10 per cent of them wait 77 weeks or longer. B.C.’s target is to complete knee surgeries within 26 weeks. Fraser Health engineered its own surgery surge earlier this year, reallocating a budget surplus to perform seven per cent more surgeries to reduce wait lists.
