Compost pick up program will begin again June 29 BY TREENA MIELKE

The old adage ‘the squeaky wheel gets the grease’ has proven to be true for Rimbey ratepayers who wanted to see the compost pick up program reinstated. At its meeting, Monday council agreed to implement the program on a temporary basis as of June 29, said Mayor Rick Pankiw. “The program will run until Dec. 31 at which time it may or may not continue depending on cost and the number of participants. There will, however, be some stipulations. It will be a user pay program, and residents who are signed up for the program will be charged an additional $3 on their monthly utility bills. Residents will be required to purchase an 80-litre refuge container from the town office. Containers maybe picked up at public works at 4705 - 46 Ave. Each container will be stenciled with the Town of Rimbey lettering. Once the container has been purchased, residents will need to write their address clearly on it and register with public works. Council has decided to reinstate the program despite the fact a petition requesting this action has been deemed insufficient as it is related to a decision that was made during budget deliberations. After checking the names and addresses on the petition it was determined

60th

that 503 signatures would have been classed as sufficient provided the petition, itself, met the legal requirements. Council will need to shell out additional finances from reserves to pay for the program. These costs have not yet been determined. At a previous meeting, Rimbey residents presented a petition signed by 570 town residents to council asking that the compost pick up be re-instated. Along with the petition, several concerns regarding the program were read by Shirley Pobuda on behalf of Helen Coers, who was unable to attend the meeting. “At a time when municipalities all across the country are trying to educate people, and improve facilities and services relating to the care of the environment, the Town of Rimbey seems to be going in the opposite direction by selling off our equipment and ending a service in waste management that has been a part of Rimbey town life for almost 20 years. What is/are the reasons for this?” Coers asked in her written submission. The mayor thanked the residents for voicing their opinions, noting council was never opposed to composting, which is why they put the bins at the recycling centre. “We were just trying to keep costs down,” he said. Coers continues to have reservations about council’s decision. “It appears convoluted to me. There are still many

unanswered questions. For instance, why did staff spend time dissecting the petition when it was ultimately rejected anyway because it was a budget issue? Could that not have been determined immediately?” The grass clippings will be taken to Ponoka weekly. Director of public works Rick Schmidt encourages people to continue to consider grass recycling and backyard composting. “You are helping yourself and you are helping the environment by doing so,” he said. Schmidt said he has obtained accredited documents from Alberta Environment and Olds College containing factual information about the benefits of composting that he would be willing to share with the public. For more information contact Schmidt at 403-8432725.

Jonah Kondro I worked at a movie theater in Red Deer when I was just breaking into my teenage years. It was my first official job and it awarded me a bi-weekly paycheck. I worked ripping tickets, selling popcorn, and after a while at the job, monitoring the projectors during the late shows. Working at the theater had a lot of perks attached to the name tag and uniform I wore for over a year: all the free popcorn I could eat, free movie tickets, and attendance at special viewings of new films before the their public release dates (to verify correct reel splicing). The large majority of my training was centered around the ‘guest experience’. What that meant was I had to make sure I knew all the answers to any questions that may be asked by a customer; some examples include: show times, the

price of nachos, and if there was any nudity in a film. I was usually pretty knowledgeable in two of the three informational requests. I was trained so that no question could go unanswered. If I was approached by a customer and I didn't have an answer, I would have to recite, "I don't know, but I will find someone who does"; then I would to go above and beyond to help that customer regardless of his or her stupid question. One of the troubling situations I've come to realize in this modern world is the use of smartphones in al-

Red Deer, Alberta Published every Tuesday by PNG Prairie Newspaper Group in community with: Publisher: Fred Gorman

It was a little disheartening to see all the cell phones replacing real conversation between individuals at the other tables. It was especially upsetting to see young parents with his or her phone up ignoring an enthusiastic child. These kids were attempting to communicate with his or her parents and if the child was without a social media account, the parent’s attention was dominated by the smartphone. This wasn't an isolated observation: there were many adults glued to his or her phone while in the presence of a child. And

since that lunch hour I've come to witness many more scenarios of children in conversational neglect. Children are curious philosophical thinkers. For an adult, some of a child's inquisitions may seem stupid, just like all the instances I had to tell customers of the theater the price of nachos. I can't claim to know how to raise a child; but that simple dopamine surge that the brain receives after all the likes and updates have been investigated is not worth the fractures inflicted to a curious child in need of real attention.

We should embrace the lowly dandelion TROY MEDIA

most every conceivable area of society. Smartphones and Google weren’t a swipe away when I worked at the theater. People had to ask questions and talk to a real person to find an answer. The smartphone, in that regards, would likely make working at the movie theater a little easier these days. The smartphone can exist as an infection though. During one hunch hour I was sitting in the Bower Mall food court; and for some strange reason I decided to put down the local paper and just look around.

Dandelions have become an unstoppable force in many cities. They are as tenacious and adaptable as coyotes and rats. Their hardy nature allows them to take over any open area. Grass has little chance competing against a plant that thrives in drought and poor soil, and that seems able to grow even in gravel and concrete. These plants can grow 70 to 100 cm high, outcompeting tall plants. Yet home owners swear they have seen dandelions duck lawn mower blades by growing extremely short stems. Clearly, dandelions have the ability to outsmart mere humans. The name dandelion is a corruption of the French words "dent de lion," which means lion's tooth. It is also known as blow ball, puffball, monks head, swine snout - even cankerwort and pee-a-bed. The official name of the dandelion is Taraxacum Officinale. It is a Eurasian plant that has spread across the world. Amazingly, it is edible (it tastes like mustard greens), and can be used in salads. If you like eating kale, then dandelion is just the

next taste experience. From my experience, dandelion wine has a lot more promise, although in Belgium it has been used in a seasonal ale whose name translates into "wet the bed." Medicinal properties Although there is little scientific evidence, a number of medicinal properties are attributed to dandelions. It is claimed to help digestive problems, bile and liver ailments and is a mild laxative. The milky latex produced by dandelions seems to cure warts and act as a mosquito repellant - maybe those pests are telling us something. Some believe that dandelions can fight cancer. The University of Windsor received a $217,000 grant to study the effect of dandelion tea on the spread of cancer. Perhaps researchers should start off the participants with a gallon of dandelion wine before giving them the tea. That's bound to cure something. The dandelion also has the ability to attract the attention of devious green zealots and lobby groups. Few plants have attracted so much devotion to its mental and physical well-being. Dandelion lovers have expended much energy to

convince municipal and provincial politicians to enact herbicide bans against the yellow weeds. The claims that lead to herbicide bans are outlandish, but politicians are eager to embrace any regulation that might garner votes in an election. What is laughable is that cosmetic herbicide bans do not apply to golf courses or agriculture. Apparently it's safe to use the chemicals on vegetables for food production but not on our lawns. Herbicides on sports fields Herbicides are also allowed on sports fields as weed infestation is a safety hazard to athletes. There is another path. We should embrace the lowly dandelion. One town that has cashed in on dandelions is Kemptville, Ont. where citizens celebrate an annual Dandelion Festival in May. The centrepiece of the festival is the featured dandelion dinner where local chefs compete to create the most exciting dandelion recipe. Something tells me that to be edible such a dinner will have to be washed down with copious amounts of dandelion wine. Will Verboven writes on agricultural issues for Troy Media.

Hort group busy with summer activities The Rimbey and District Horticulture Group have organized three public summer events this year. The first of these was Rhubarb Day held at the Farmer’s Market in Rimbey on June 6. Every thing was rhubarb. This annual event began 20 years ago and resulted in the RDHG gathering rhubarb recipes and producing a cookbook called “Treasures from the rhubarb patch.” Copies may still be available. The next event will be held on July 25 at Pas Ka Po Park on Market day. This is the Rose and Lilly show. This one proves a bit of a challenge. We have held the event outside, but judging was difficult. We tried to hold it in a tent and in the schoolhouse but there was limited space to display the exhibits. When we held it outside the wind blew the exhibits over.

The objective of this event is to demonstrate the variety and quality of roses and lilies that can be grown in this area. Stay tuned for more information. The third and last event of the summer is the Horticulture and Bench show. The term ‘Bench Show’ refers to the handicrafts, baking, preserves, kids exhibits, photography, etc. This was added to the Show in 1972. This year the RDHG is putting effort into encouraging youth to participate. Check out page 23 in the 2015 Show book. The book is now available. Phone Maryanne M. ( 403 785 7135) or Gail H. (403 843 2539) This event takes place on Aug.14 and 15. There is such a short growing season in this area and the weather is unpredictable. We applaud all those who strive to keep their yards and gardens beautiful and encourage you to participate in this show.

Tip for the Day: Keep cats at bay by mixing orange peels and coffee grounds and spreading them around the plants.

ered by the bell outside the Bentley United Church on June 6 around 10:30 a.m. to make a joyful noise. The activity was to celebrate the founding, 90 years ago, of the United Church in Canada. Some other churches across Canada did the same thing. Rev. Brenda Kersell who came in September 2014 and ministers to both the Bentley and the Blackfalds United Church congregations provided some history, both on the inaugural church service church in Toronto on June 10, 1925 and about the local church. It was included along with a short litany. She has delved into the history extensively and believes she is the first female minister to serve Bentley United Church. In 1901 a log United Church was built in Bentley. It was replaced with a brick church in 1910. Sod was turned in 1965 for construction of the present building which has been

refurbished as necessary. At one point in ringing the bell 90 times, the cable slipped off the pulley making the ringing of the bell even more challenging. Some of those in attendance had bells, tambourines, and other noisemakers. Some special guests were in attendance, many of whom had very long direct ties with the church. First to ring the bell were Glen and Pearl Nelson. The bell had at one time been stored at their farm for a couple of years before Glen became instrumental in getting it erected. Gladys Calkins did the ceremonial cutting of the anniversary cake. Norva Landry spoke of the church years back. Anniversary cake, fruit and beverages were provided inside afterward and a time of sharing connections with the church was expressed by those in attendance.

Council helps fund councilling service for Town of Rimbey BY TREENA MIELKE

A counseling service, initiated last year by two community groups, will continue for at least another year, thanks to a financial boost from the Town of Rimbey. At its meeting, June 8, council agreed to support the Catholic Social Services Family Counseling Services in Rimbey by donating $5,000 to the program. The funding is to come from unrestricted surplus. The initial funding provided for the counseling services was for service from September 2014 to September of this year. Program coordinator for Rimbey Neighbourhood Place and The Community Wellness Group, Leanne Evans, said the family councilor has been coming to Rimbey weekly since the program was initiated and has a steady stream of clients. Evans noted the counselor has stated that approximately half of the clients she sees would not access the services if they had to travel to Red Deer or elsewhere to receive them. “A disruption in the services offered would be a huge detriment to these clients,” said Evans. “It takes a very large leap of faith to reach out and admit that you need help. I hope we are able to continue to support these courageous people in their quest for peace.” Evans said the counseling service has proved to be very much needed in Rimbey. “There are many people seeking assistance with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, anger management, depression,

blended family issues, self-esteem, couple issues and assertiveness training. There are young people who struggle with trouble at home and at school,” she said. The counselor helps participants learn healthy strategies to deal with anger, bullying, teasing, violence, community and family conflict. There is strong support for this type of program from the school social worker, FCSS, Alberta Mental Health and the Early Child Development Coalition who believe that healthy families contribute to a healthy community, said Evans. Some people utilizing the program are referred by Alberta Mental Health and Rimbey Victim Service Unit is supportive of this initiative as well. Referrals also come from the social worker at the Rimbey Junior Senior High School and West Country Outreach School. Catholic Social Services has provided the services to Rimbey and area for a cost of $14,810 annually. “Great progress has been made to break down stigmatism and fear so that anyone that may find himself or herself in need of this service will access it,” she said. Last year, Rimbey Victim Services, FCSS and the Town of Rimbey has each contributed $5,000 towards the program. Appointments can be made now with the family counsellor for the fall by calling Red Deer Catholic Social Service office at 403347-8844 and specifying that the appointments be made in Rimbey.

Sod turning for skateboard park to be held next Monday Work on park to begin immediately, project is now slated for a tentative September completion date BY TREENA MIELKE

After a year of behind the scenes planning, a skateboard park could be a reality for Rimbey by this fall, thanks to the local Kinsmen Club. A sod turning for the park will be held (Monday, June 22) at 2 p.m. on land on the south side of the Lions Park. “It’s nice to be in the ground (with the project),” said project chairman Allen Adam. The park, which is estimated to cost $458,000, is being built by New Line Skateparks Inc. The Town of Rimbey and Ponoka County has each donated $40,000 for the park and $50,000 has come from the Lions Club. Canline-Gazelle’s Group of Companies donated $3,000 and the town contributed the land. The Kinsmen has also received smaller donations and gifts in kind for the project. The Kinsmen Club borrowed the remainder of the funding so the project could begin this year. “We didn’t want to wait until next year to get the project going,” said Adam. Donations for the park will still be gratefully accepted, he added. For more information about the park or to make a donation call Adam at 403-704-9278. Funding for the original skateboard park, which was removed as it has become a safety hazard, was provided by the Lions Club and community lottery funds.

A conceptual drawing of the Rimbey Kinsmen sponsored skateboard park which is planned for completion by fall in Rimbey.

Fingerprints Playschool celebrated another fantastic year with a year-end celebration lunch on Thursday, May 28. The playschool year began at the beginning of September with Tuesday and Thursday morning classes while adding a Wednesday morning class in January. To give you a brief snapshot of our past school year here are a few of the different activities that we have enjoyed. We have taken field trips to the Co-op grocery department, the Cutting Corner and Flower Gallery, Pas Ka Poo Park and the Fire Station. Animal guests were enjoyed this year including kittens, puppies and a tortoise. Raising our own chicks and ducklings was another fun treat and Speckles, our resident bunny, enjoyed her children friends! Themes this year included exploring dinosaurs, travel, camping, circus and our traditional farm themes. The classroom was transformed each month to a new theme for dramatic play. Fingerprints Playschool is located in the Rimbey Christian School building at 4522-54th Avenue where the program has it’s own classroom, access to outdoor playground equipment, indoor movement space, a kitchen, a library, music room and computer lab.

Rimbey RCMP Detachment members responded to 50 calls for service. Highlights include theft of mail, break and enters, stolen vehicles and other serious matters. Drunk driver rolls truck Last Thursday, during the supper hour, an intoxicated man drove a Dodge truck up to the gas pumps at a local filling station and got into a physical confrontation with a concerned citizen who saw

that he was drunk driving. The impaired driver left the gas station in the vehicle and proceeded to go to a residence in Rimbey to pick up four adult passengers to go party elsewhere. They didn’t get very far and rolled the truck on the outskirts of town. Fortunately, no one suffered any life threatening injuries in the crash The 33-year-old driver was arrested and charged with drunk driving. The vehicle was completely demolished and was impounded by police. Mail theft investigated Rimbey Mounties continue to investigate recent mailbox vandalism and thefts that have occurred throughout the detachment area. Other detachments in Central Alberta have also been hit by these thieves. To date, one

adult male, a resident of Rimbey has been charged with seven counts of possession of stolen mail. Police continue to diligently investigate these crimes. Theft of mail is serious and has its own charging section in the Criminal Code. Sentences handed out by the Judge to those criminals convicted of mail theft is usually no less than 18 months in jail. Missing tools On June 5th, a telephone line worker was completing a job near Township Road 450 and Range Road 34. He left the work site for 10 minutes and when he returned his tools were missing. Someone had come along in the few minutes he had left them unattended and taken them. If you may have stumbled across them, please contact the detachment and we will

return them to the rightful owner. ATV stolen Sometime between June 7th and June 11th, unknown culprit(s) entered a lot on Lakeview Drive at Gull Lake and broke into several travel trailers. A green 2008 Can Am Outlander ATV was stolen from the location. Police searched the area and discovered that the thief had driven the ATV away from the scene using a trail through the woods nearby. At approximately 6 p.m., on June 11, RCMP officers arrested a local 34-year-old male who resides not too far from where the crimes took place driving the stolen ATV. He had two illegal rifles in his possession as well as methamphetamine and break-in instruments. In addition to this, he was also in possession of mail belonging to several people from the Gull Lake area. Several mailboxes had been broken into on June 5 in that immediate area. The accused remains in custody and is well known to police. The accused faces numerous charges for these serious offences. Lawn mower driver intoxicated Last week, I wrote about a sot in Rimbey who rolled his riding lawn mower in town while he was intoxicated. Often, we say, “only in Rimbey could that ever happen”. Well, let me tell you — we are not alone. In the late afternoon on Tuesday, while en route to my son’s baseball game in Spruceview, we were travelling through Eckville on Highway 766. Heading straight down the middle of the highway was a man on a riding lawn mower coming right towards us with his head down. In one hand he was texting on his cell phone, in the other hand, he was carrying a beer. As we went around him — he didn’t even look up! Local Synergy Group hosts annual free public barbeque and open house this week The Rimbey Regional Synergy Group will be hosting their annual free public barbecue and open house in Rimbey on June 18 at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre. The event will start at 5 p.m. with the barbecue getting underway at 5:30. Industry operators and government agencies will have display booths to visit and will be available to chat and answer questions. At 6:30 there will be presentations starting on the topics of orphan wells, reclamation and remediation. These topics will be of interest to landowners, as it is often asked “what happens when there is no longer a company in place to reclaim and pay for an abandoned well?” In addition to how the orphan well program works, there will be information on regulatory expectations and industry

practices related to reclamation and remediation in general. There will also be time for the audience to ask questions and the presentation session will wrap up with some door prize draws and more opportunity to visit the display booths and chat with your neighbors. Besides the opportunity to connect with local industry reps and government agencies, get some information on the evening’s topic and enjoy a free burger, the open house is a great chance to find out what the local synergy group does in the community. If you would like more information about the open house or the Rimbey Regional Synergy Group, you can contact their facilitator, Rick Anderson at 403-847-8086, or email rimbeysynergy@gmail. com.

RIMBEY REVIEW 13

Propane value adding a boost for Alberta Province would realize $1.2 billion in new tax revenue and 1,500 direct construction jobs from new propane processing facility Alberta’s Industrial Heartland - Alberta would gain full time, stable jobs and an added $65 million annually in government tax revenue from each new industrial facility adding value to propane. A new report from Stantec, commissioned by Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association, examined the economic contributions of converting propane into polypropylene. Report highlights were revealed at the recent Canadian Energy Research Institute’s Annual Petrochemical Conference. “Alberta is currently awash in cost advantaged propane as a result of new shale gas development in Western Canada. In addition, with the recent closure of the Cochin propane export line to the United States, prices have collapsed,” explained Ed Gibbons, Chair of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association. “We have heard from numerous midstream companies that new markets for our energy products are needed. The current pricing and availability presents a huge opportunity to expand the market for propane here in Alberta by converting it to much higher value polypropylene before exporting it.” The report analyzed the impacts of one new world class facility that would process propane into propylene, and then into polypropylene. Throughout a 20 year facility lifecycle, the additional tax revenue for the Government of Alberta amounts to more than $1.2 billion. Author of the report, Ian Morrison, Senior Principal from Stantec, noted that the analysis was conducted on a typical world class propane to polypropylene facility that could be built in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland to take advantage of abundant low cost propane feedstock. “The direct tax payable amount of $65 million annually once the facility is operational was based on the average tax that a petrochemical facility of this size would pay. This is representative of what could be expected and compares well to tax amounts reported by chemical companies in their annual reports,” highlighted Morrison. In addition to a new source of tax revenue, projects like this create around 1,500 new construction jobs at peak, 150 full time operational jobs, as well as spinoff benefits in the supply and service sector. “We’ve seen from the most recent dip in oil prices that Alberta needs to diversify our energy sector. A boost in petrochemical processing helps soften the economic cycles and provides long term, stable jobs for Albertans,” added Gibbons. Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association has a long history of encouraging diversification through further petrochemical processing, which aligns with the newly elected NDP government’s vision to boost value adding in the province. The current market dynamics of propane present an ideal opportunity. However, given the competition from other jurisdictions around the globe for investment, it’s critical for government, industry, and municipalities to work cooperatively to ensure Alberta’s investment climate is competitive. The report in its entirety is available at www.industrialheartland.com, where additional information can be viewed on the Association and industrial projects in the region.

Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association is dedicated to coordinating, advocating, and promoting sustainable industrial development in the region. The Association is a Country Living & Walk to Town

Husband and wife team do well at provincial school bus road-eo competition, off to Minneapolis competition BY TREENA MIELKE

Dodo and Tammy Freerksen, school bus drivers for several years for Wolf Creek Public Schools, are soon to be off to an International Safety Competition to be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dodo Freerksen received first place in the provincial school bus road-eo on June 6 and will be one of two drivers from Canada to compete in the big bus category in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His wife, Tammy placed fifth overall and achieved the status of being the most professional driver in Alberta. She is excited and pleased with her win. “I am very pleased. That was my coveted moment.” However, as a fifth place finisher, Freerksen won’t advance to the international level this year, but will go along on the trip to support

her husband. “Dodo did really, really well,” she said. “And I will help him when we travel down there. We will do well. We’re very prepared. And I’m a good cheerer.” Dodo Freerksen has been driving bus for 12 years in the Rimbey area for Wolf Creek Public Schools and First Student. He has competed at school bus road-eos for 12 years. His third place win at the local road-eo in Airdrie on May 23 allowed him to advance to provincials. During the competition, Dodo successfully negotiated an obstacle course composed of a right turn, diminishing clearance, curb park, backup, uncontrolled rail crossing, straight line, offset alley, student pick-up, parallel park and stop line. Tammy Freerksen, who has been a bus driver for 16 years in the Rimbey area,

has competed in road-eos for 15 years. This year she had the highest scores in the written and pre-trip components and placed first at the local level.

She has won first and second in previous road-eos and competed internationally. “This time I can sit back and relax and take the time off,” she said.

War on trout: Destructive activities cripple native trout populations Human-caused threats to bull trout and cutthroat trout in the Oldman watershed combined with snail’s pace recovery action by the provincial and federal governments has led to severe limits on population recovery. A new review of overlapping human impacts throughout this watershed shows virtually every creek and river home to native trout has been negatively impacted or is threatened by logging, off-highway vehicle use, stream crossings, oil and gas development, coal mining, overharvesting, roads, dam operations or combinations of these. Alberta Wilderness Association

and Timberwolf Wilderness Society recommend and request: An immediate moratorium on clear cut logging in westslope cutthroat and bull trout habitat, a federal habitat protection order declared for westslope cutthroat trout and enforced human access restrictions surrounding all critical habitat waterways. “Scientific disturbance thresholds have long been surpassed for these sensitive native trout species and yet timber harvest and other developments continue to be approved in the same watersheds,” says Brittany Verbeek, AWA Conservation Specialist.

“We are fed up with a lack of urgency by regulators that means there are no safe havens for native trout populations.” A federal recovery strategy for westslope cutthroat trout finalized in March of 2014 fails to explicitly include riparian habitat surrounding streams and other elements of trout habitat that are critical to its recovery including riparian habitat surrounding streams. Worse still, protection of the designated critical habitat is not enforceable under Canada’s Species at Risk Act (SARA) until a habitat protection order is issued.

She said both she and her husband enjoy competing in the rodeo-eos. “We push each other forward.” The Freerksen have four

children, one of whom is still attending high school in Rimbey. “None of our kids are coming with us,” she said. “This is our trip.”

Rimbey seniors nominated for provincial service awards Christianson recognized for valuable service to the Rimbey community BY TREENA MIELKE

One of the Rimbey’s core volunteers has been singled out for recognition at a provincial level. Violet Christianson is one of 81 seniors who has been nominated for this year’s Minister’s Seniors Service Awards. Christianson, who has been away for family celebrations including an anniversary and a wedding, said she was aware of the nomination, but hadn’t given it much thought. “It is nice to be nominated,” she said. Christianson was nominated by Rimbey Family and Community Support Services. “She’s been a tireless volunteer for more than 30 years,” said Carolynne Jensen, senior information and referral co-ordinator for FCSS. As an FCSS volunteer Christianson did committee work on policy development and worked on funding development projects every year. She is proficient in office management and has a high level of expertise in bookkeeping and income tax preparation. “She has a natural common sense to handling life’s circumstances,” said Jensen. “She has a smile and a warmth about her that makes everyone feel comfortable around her.” Christianson, a long

time member of the United Church, is an accomplished pianist who plays at the Rimbey Lodge and the long-term care facility once a month. She has been a volunteer in the community for many years. “I have done lots of volunteer stuff, but don’t ask me what it is,” she said with a laugh. Christianson has three

children, Keith, Karen Bannister and Wendy Christianson, two grandchildren, Richard and Lisa and one eight-year-old great-granddaughter, Mikayla. She and her late husband, Bruce farmed southwest of Rimbey for many years. Her husband passed away in 2008 and Christianson rented the farm out and moved to town.

Johnson singled out for recognition BY TREENA MIELKE

A well deserving Rimbey senior has been nominated for this year’s Minister’s Seniors Service Award. Gladys Johnson is one of the 81 seniors nominated for the award, which will be presented this fall in Edmonton. Johnson was nominated by the Rimbey Drop-In Centre. Drop-In centre president Doreen Glanfield said Johnson is an amazing, hard working volunteer who deserves to be recognized. Her willingness to help out whenever and wherever she can and walk the extra mile is well known by many community groups. “She’s the one that always says ‘yes, I’ll do that.’ She says yes to everything and she does it,” said Glanfield. She said Johnson was a tireless volunteer when the new Drop In was built. “She became my partner in getting the new Drop In built. She was the treasurer and we formed a catering group. She has worked so hard for the Drop In. Johnson was also a charter member of the Wooddale Ladies Club and is still part of the group. She served as president of the Rimbey & District old Timers’ Association for several years, stepping back this year as president, but still remaining a vital and important part of the committee. This organization, too, is very

dear to her heart and she derives a great deal of satisfaction in helping to bring friends and neighbours together again each year. Johnson is humbled and proud to have been nominated for the award. “It’s overwhelming, really,” she said. She was especially pleased that her children Les Johnson, Bev Bohlender and Val Dolan and her granddaughter and great grandson Chelsea and Dolan Chomistek were in attendance at a special tea

held for the nominees in Calgary. “It was very nice. I was so pleased to have them there,” she said. Johnson farmed with her late husband, Herb southeast of Rimbey by the Parkland Beach Road for 42 years. Her husband passed away in 1993 and Gladys moved to town about 10 years ago. She has six grandchildren and two great grandsons. Her son has taken over the farm, but Gladys still has a vegetable garden on the home place.

Bentley seniors’ week enjoyed BY JUNE NORVILA

On Tuesday the regular Senior Drop-In took place in the afternoon and a special free seniors’ week movie ‘Some Like It Hot’ was offered by the Bentley Municipal library. On Thursday, a luncheon was provided at the Bentley Community Hall organized through Bentley Community Services. It included homemade soup, bunwiches and veggie plates along with a special seniors’ week piece of specially decorated cake. About sixty people including a few from the Bentley Care Centre attended. Also in attendance were local MLA Jason Nixon, town councilors Butch Howard and Cora Knutson, town CAO Elizabeth Smart and Community Services manager Barb Carson and many hall board members. Entertainment was by Hugh Kelly on guitar singing old time western favorites in his wonderful baritone voice. He resides in Lacombe and has grown up in the Central Alberta area. Hugh has written several songs and also has produced four CDs of his music and songs. Many recognized the old time country songs he sang and some even sang or hummed along. Lucky door prize winners were Martin Schneider, Mary Imbeault, and Shirley Sawyer.

The audience at the Bentley Senior's Week luncheon June 6 at the historic Bentley community hall were entertained by the singing and strumming of Hugh Kelly from Lacombe. June Norvila Photo

MAGNUSON Vera Audrey (Mueller) CUMMINGS On June 8th, 2015, our dear mother, Alice Marie Cummings passed away at the Rimbey Continuing Care Centre. She enjoyed 89 years of a life filled with farming, camping and card playing. She was born in Rimbey on March 30, 1926 to William and Mary Trautman and raised on a farm south east of Rimbey. She was the third oldest of 8 children. Alice attended school at Symond Valley and Potter Creek. After finishing school she then worked as a waitress in Edmonton and Calgary, returning back to Rimbey to work in a cafe owned by Lawrence Calkins, where she met and married her soldier boy, Leonard (Bud) Cummings on Jan.06, 1946. They raised a family of six on the farm west of Rimbey. She was an active member of the Potter Creek Ladies Club. After selling the farm they moved to Red Deer, where Mom enjoyed bowling, travelling and playing cards. In about 1995 when Bud’s health failed they returned to Rimbey. Alice is survived by six children: Ken (Ely), Sandra (Pete) Washkevich, Fay (Cliff) Chappell, Randy (Darlene), Diane (Ron) Menge, Leonor (Roger) Hammer, fifteen grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren, two sisters in Calgary, Irene Stephenson and Pat Praud. She was predeceased by her husband Bud, in 2001 and one great-grandchild, Irene in 2010. A Celebration of Alice’s Life was held in the Rimbey United Church, on Friday June 12, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Interment took place at The West Haven Cemetery. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Alice’s Memory may be made to the David Thompson Health Trust, c/o Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta. T0C 2J0. RIMBEY REVIEW 23

Obstacles of finding pet does not stop determined owner Some of us are dog people; some of us are cat people. As for myself, I seem to have a bond with both dogs and cats. This summer however, my sister has taken me in to stay with her out of the goodness of her heart, but reluctantly has allowed me to bring along with me my cat “Nina”. I have owned Nina since February. I got her as a young kitten. She has striking colors of orange, black and white, with a freckled face. She is not a particular beautiful cat, but she’s my cat. and I have created a bond with her. My sister and brother-inlaw have a large patio deck that is about 1,000 feet from the ground. I was told there was no way little Nina would jump down off of it. Well, finding out the hard way after my first cup of coffee the following day, I learned, that, yes Nina can jump the thousand feet, and yes, indeed, was nowhere to be found. Still trying to wake up, being morning, I rushed downstairs to the back lawn and called her name. I ran through the sprinkler in the back yard, not caring if I got soaked, my clothes would dry, the grass would get green, the sun will still shine, but my world would end if I could not find my precious cat. What seemed like an hour, but in reality were only minutes later, I saw the furry colors of orange and black, and white through the fence. The fence, as well, was tall, very tall, taller than myself. I continued to call, and she came and handed me her little white paw through the railing. A very nice lady came out of her home, and I politely asked her if she would grab my cat, and hand her to me over the fence. She called her not “Nina” but kitty, and so Nina ran away even farther from both of us. The lady said nothing, and went back into her home. I knew then, I was on my own I was on a mission. I asked my cat hating brother-in-law, who, in his mind, would like to see Nina turned into a bright orange and black kite sailing through the blue sky how to get to the other side of the tall fence. I learned I would need to get in my car and drive to an area, with a gate that was usually closed, but he did give me little encouragement,

saying “The gate might be open today” I thought, “thank you sweet brother, and rushed to find my keys, shaking, and ran to my car, and proceeded to find the gate “open”. Not caring if I was trespassing, I found an old wooden fence, with nails, and climbed over it, not caring if it ripped my jean skirt, and cut my legs, or fell off the fence for that matter. After climbing the ever so

ridged fence, I headed what seemed to be the direction of my sister’s house, she was not the only one with a ten-foot high fence … I also looked for the kind lady who dared to called Nina kitty, as Nina has no idea she is a kitty. I hobbled along, in the hot sun, not having any idea where I was. In only in minutes I found “Nina” curled up in a scared little ball looking at me with her yellow eyes. I picked her

up and cuddled her close to me, quite tightly, determined she would never leave me again. I took Nina home, and she proceeded to my sister’s bedroom, curled up in a ball and fell asleep. I proceeded to get in my car again to purchase her a harness, leash, and collar, came home and tried them on. As it turned out the leash was too short, the harness was too tight, and the collar

was too big! Nina did however lie in the sun, on the very deck she jumped off of, and played with the pretty blue leash. It just goes to show, that in life, not everyone knows where they will end up in the middle of the day, not everything fits, life is far from perfect, and we endure hardships and obstacles to reach our goals, large ones, and even small ones like finding “Nina”.
