Overpass clean-up cost $40,000 Rocks placed on slope to prevent squatting Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

The clean-up, restoration and placement of rocks under the Highway 1 overpass at Riverside and Lonzo roads cost $40,000, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. The clean-up on May 19 followed the removal of homeless camps that were under both ends of the highway overpass, which is a ministry responsibility. At the time of the clean-up, signs had been placed to indicate that anyone camping would be charged with trespassing. The camp had generated a number of public complaints about the amount of accumulated trash, as well as the safety of the overpass due to occupants digging into the slope. Deb Lowell, public re-

had been living there dispersed, “one individual has been in shelter with us since and we are working at acquiring permanent accommodation for her.” They also brought

Highway drivers who hog the left lane and hold up faster traffic without a good reason now face potential $167 fines, along with three penalty points. The clarified regulation took effect June 12 and requires drivers to stay right on routes where the speed is more than 80 kilometres per hour when other traffic is approaching from behind. The exceptions in which the left lane is okay to occupy are when you’re overtaking and passing another vehicle, leaving the right lane open to allow traffic to merge, preparing for a left-hand turn, or moving left to pass an official vehicle with a flashing light. Police say drivers who block the left lane increase the risk that aggressive drivers will pass on the right or tailgate. The rules do not apply to HOV lanes – the next lane to the right is considered the left-most lane on routes such as Highway 1 in Burnaby.

The perilous path of public perception Andrew

Holota

On Point Close a major downtown bridge for a yogafest? After nearly 40 years in the journalism business, one would think I’ve “seen ‘em all,” at least when it comes to political public relations disasters. Apparently not. That aborted stunt by Premier Christy Clark was definitely a new one in my books – deeply infused with the “Um” factor, rather than “Om.” You could also imagine that, given decades of media attention to this kind of gaffe, politicians would be developing a more finely tuned sense of public optics. Clearly, however, that evolutionary cycle does not generally apply in elected public service – federal, provincial or municipal. So, the next thought that might occur,

is that astute politicians would hire opticsavvy communications advisors who don’t do well at keister-kissing. And the really smart politicians then actually listen to them. I’m not sure what it was in this case, but the negative optics of this urban exercise could have been spotted by a grade-schooler. Let’s shut down a key artery over a waterway in a major city for seven hours, to recognize International Yoga Day. Invite people out to do the downward donkey on the bridge. Sponsoring the event are two private corporations that are significant contributors to the provincial Liberal party which currently holds power in Victoria. One of those companies is Lululemon, internationally known maker of yoga gear. One of its stores is at the end of the Burrard Bridge. Despite the multi-billion-dollar corporate heavies, the cost to taxpayers for this event is estimated at $150,000. The date of the stretch-fest also happens to be National Aboriginal Day. Any one of the above factors, starting with the closure of the bridge, should have sent even the most amateur of politicians and

comms flaks into a wild-eyed, flapping fit. Yet, it took a week before Christy and company finally caved in the face of public outrage and panicking sponsors, and cancelled the gong show. That was a good one, although I’ve seen some real doozies in my time – many of them in Surrey, which during the 1990s,

A host of elements should have sent comms flaks into a wild-eyed, flapping fit. spawned a bumper crop of stunningly unperceptive representatives across the political spectrum. Like the councillor accused of a conflict of interest, who trots out a distinguished citizen to speak in his defence – a former provincial minister who was bounced out of cabinet for ... a conflict of interest! Nothing wrong here, folks.

Around that time we also had a mayor who vowed that if the RCMP brought photo radar to the city, he’d have tow trucks haul away the Mounties’ van. Mmm hmm... The fellow who preceded him employed similar gunboat diplomacy. When a feisty councillor wouldn’t stop heckling him during a public meeting, the mayor walked out of chambers, and called the police to make her shut up. Hard to find that kind of leadership... We also had a female MLA and friends who, for a joke, placed on the desk of a male colleague a prancing toy penis ... wait for it ... during a sitting of the Legislature. Ha ... ha? Along those lines, I’ll never forget the time one of my female reporters came back from lunch with an elderly school trustee, who confided over their salads that he was still virile. Once more, for the record, sir. Really, folks, I don’t make this stuff up. So don’t feel bad, Christy. Many others in your line of work have face-planted on the perilous path of public perception.

World’s first hearing aid that outperforms normal hearing.

What about rights of the victims? So, Matt Johnston and Cody Haevischer feel that they’ve been mistreated while in custody? Poor babies! So, they were kept in solitary confinement too long? How sad! At least they are still breathing; that’s more than can be said for their innocent victims. So, Johnston had no one to speak to, no human contact, so he had to talk to himself or sing to himself? Their victims haven’t been able to do that ever since they were shot! So, he wasn’t allowed to speak to his 12-yearold daughter for two months? That’s terrible! His victims have been permanently silenced by his actions. So, their charter rights have been violated? How about the rights of their victims and their families? Now they seek unspecified damages from the B.C. taxpayers? It’s high time they sat down in front of a mirror and had a long, hard talk with themselves and realize the irreparable damage they’ve done to their innocent victims. Matt Kwantes Abbotsford

I found the nurses very caring, friendly and helpful. The hospital is so very clean and the food was good. I had a dinner and a breakfast and they were very good and healthy. I made a joke that if I had to stay longer, I wouldn’t mind. Comfortable bed, nurses taking care for me and meals in bed! Thanks to all the staff for caring for me. Sandra Calder Abbotsford

If your budget does not allow for such an expense, you can still give your home’s front entrance an entirely new look by installing inexpensive moulding around the door before giving it a fresh coat of paint. 5 things reality renovation shows do not mention Linda Poetker BLUE CREST ELECTRIC LTD.

The appeal of increased market value or updating the family home has homeowners channel surfing for inspiration from reality home improvement shows on how to gain more square footage, an open concept living space, or an additional bathroom. Unfortunately, these reality shows have also produced a generation of do-ityourself enthusiasts who now have just enough knowledge to get started . . . but not enough knowledge to get the job done safely. Many attempts end up with very, very dangerous results.

While called “reality” these shows don’t paint a realistic picture of the renovation process and what is at stake when amateur or general handyman work is done where a certified professional is due. Here are some things to keep in mind: 1. Your renovation will take longer to complete than what the 1/2 hour TV show implies as your tradespeople will likely not agree to work round the clock till the job is done. 2. Permits are for your benefit and, among other things, will ensure work quality and keep your home insurance CONTINUED ON A16

Truly Made in Canada

How to choose the Right Electrician if you have any of these 6 problems and you want them fixed today! Unlike the plumbers I know, electricians rarely get emergency calls. Our equivalent of a flood in the basement is a fire in the attic . . . and you don’t call us for that. You call 911. So you’re probably not reading this because you’ve got an electrical emergency. Instead, you have an electrical problem like one of these . . . 1. “My good friend (or husband) tried to do it.” My apologies to the guys reading this, but it’s true. A big part of our business is finishing up the electrical projects you start . . . from outlets to ceiling fans. And that’s okay, although it would be easier and probably cheaper if you’d call us first. We have the tools, experience and know-how to do the job right, start to finish. Call us for proven professional electrical expertise.

2. “I need a ceiling fan or chandelier installed.” We install lighting fixtures, fans, outlets, dimmers and more. Our work is guaranteed to meet city codes, and we use only copper wiring (no aluminum). Want to know why we use only copper wiring? Call us.

3. “I have a breaker that doesn’t stay reset.” If your breaker keeps tripping, you don’t have the equivalent of a flooded basement, yet. But, you do have a potentially dangerous problem involving the electrical circuits in your home. Don’t ignore it. Call us!

4. “I’ve got an ugly internet or cable TV wiring stapled to my baseboards.” Let us do the job right. Snaking wire through walls is an art, a science, a skill . . . and our specialty. It’s also something few electricians, cable companies or internet providers like to do. But you’re in luck when you call us. We’re World Champions at snaking wire without knocking holes in your walls.

5. “Smells like something’s burning” Overheated appliances and electrical circuits are a problem you don’t want to ignore. A call to us now could save you a call to 911 later.

6. “The ‘mystery switch’.” We love getting this call. If you’ve got a switch that you’ve never been able to link to an outlet or circuit, call us to solve the mystery.

more appealing is to plant some colourful flowers around the property. Line walkways with flowers native to our region, as such plants will last longer than exotic

alternatives that may not be capable of adapting to this climate. In addition to lining walkways, hang window boxes filled with colourful flowers or plants outside

naked windows. Doing so can make windows seem larger and add colour to your home’s exterior. Another creative way to make use of colourful flowers is to place

a few planters at the foot of your driveway and painting the numbers of your address on the planters. This can be both effortless and inexpensive, but it can instantly make a home look more inviting. • Spotlight certain parts of your property. Many homeowners focus on improving the curb appeal during

the daytime hours; you can also take steps to make a home more appealing at night. Solar spotlights placed around trees and other attractive features in your yard can shed light on the areas of your property you’re most proud of . . . even after the sun has gone down. Solar spotlights won’t add to your energy bill,

because they are powered by the sun, and they can make certain accents on your property stand out at night. Improving curb appeal may sou nd like a significant undertaking, but there are many ways budget-conscious homeowners can make their home’s exterior more appealing without going broke.

Only some tradespeople look like Property Brothers, Jonathan and Drew Scott or Jillian Harris from Love It or List It, Vancouver. Mike Holmes, from the popular show Holmes on Homes, is a strong advocate of hiring only qualified professional contractors for all regulated work in your home - especially when it comes to electrical work, plumbing and HVAC. If you think the disasters faced by homeowners on reality shows are exaggerated for the sake of television drama and suspense, think again! Based on our own experiences at Blue Crest Electric, our electricians could provide enough realty show material for an entire series of electrical disasters they have repaired. Call a professional today to ensure your renovation dreams come true today and last for years to come!

On April 17

they entered a team translation competition and won 2nd place in the division. When the team arrived at the Longhouse for the competition, they came upon their respected elder Mr. Ray Silver, and he greeted them all saying, “You are all my children, my family, my people … I am so proud of you today. Gallery 7 Theatre and Performing Arts hosts its 11th annual Summer Drama Blast, starting July 6. This is a camp-style program providing children and teens the opportunity to explore all things dramatic in a life-affirming positive environment, said Gallery 7 executive artistic director Ken Hildebrandt. “It’s a great opportunity for kids and teens to learn theatre skills from experienced theatre artists, and a great chance for them to develop important life skills such as teamwork, self-confidence and communication,” he said. For children ages six to 12, Summer Drama Blast offers generalized performance camps that allow children to explore their artistic abilities while learning both basic and intermediate performance skills such as blocking, line memorization, characterization and play development. Each camp ends with a short performance where campers can showcase to family and friends what they’ve learned throughout the week. For teens ages 13 to 18, Summer Drama Blast offers more advanced camps in performance, musical theatre and Shakespeare. These intensive camps are ideal for young people looking to build on their high school theatre experience, preparing for college and professional theatre training or for those

Local cyclist to pedal across Canada for kids’ cancer Bob Ahuja of Abbotsford is participating in the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride for the fourth consecutive year. In conjunction with the endeavour, he is hosting a fundraiser on June 19 at Duke’s Country Pub in Chilliwack (41582 Yale Rd.).

Tickets are $20 for the roast beef buffet dinner and are available at the door or by calling 604897-3181. The Sears National Kids Cancer Ride is held on behalf of childhood cancer and this year begins in Vancouver on Sept. 10 and ends in Halifax on Sept. 26.

Riding in relay style, the selected national riders each cycle about 150 km and 220 km per day and are joined at times by thousands of other cyclists who ride shorter

“stage ride” distances. At the start and end of each day, the cyclists participate in community events and visit many of Canada’s 17 pediatric oncology centres and hospitals.

Each rider is responsible for raising $25,000. Ahuja, an Abbotsford bus driver, first participated in the event in 2012, when he was part of the team that went all the way to Halifax,

while in 2013 he went to Winnipeg and last year to Toronto. This year, he is going to Halifax again. Prior to joining this ride, the 44-year-old married father of two

did the Ride to Conquer Cancer from 2009 to 2012. For more information or to make a donation to Ahuja’s campaign, visit http://bit. ly/1GDcwOa.

B.C. officially declared free of avian influenza Americans agree to lift trade restrictions on poultry

Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News

Nearly six months after avian influenza was last detected in the Lower Mainland,

the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has declared British Columbia “free of notifiable avian influenza,” a move that has

prompted the United States to remove restrictions on poultry from the province. It’s hoped other countries will follow suit,

but an outbreak of the same H5N2 strain of avian influenza in Ontario in April means nations that restrict imports from all of Canada

will likely keep barriers in place until the entire nation is declared free of bird flu. B.C. Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick

said he is “confident international trade will resume as normal with our other trading partners in the near future.” The outbreak of a

highly pathogenic version of the virus last November and December resulted in the deaths of more than 200,000 turkeys and chickens at 13 farms in Langley, Abbotsford and Chilliwack. Those farms were cleaned and placed in quarantines, all of which had been lifted by the middle of March. Since then, the H5N2 avian influenza has swept through the United States and caused the death of millions of birds. The declaration is the last official step needed to return the Valley’s poultry industry to a normal state after the largest avian influenza outbreak to hit the region in more than a decade. B.C. Poultry Assoication president Ray Nickel said the U.S. moved to open its borders to B.C. poultry is a positive. He said it will primarily help processors, who depend on foreign markets to purchase parts of B.C. birds that are less popular at home. That increased demand allows B.C. farmers – who operate within a supply-management model that guarantees a certain price per bird – to raise more chickens. While officials are still reviewing the response to the avian flu discovery, Letnick said significant progress had been made since 2004, when millions of birds were culled after another avian influenza outbreak. Letnick said federal, provincial and industry officials were “very well co-ordinated right from the get-go,” a factor that helped stop the virus in its tracks. In a separate move, the legislature has passed a bill that will allow poultry groups to mandate members to purchase avian influenza insurance. It’s hoped that will protect farmers from the financial cost of dealing with an outbreak. The insurance plan had been years in the making and was nearly complete when avian flu was discovered last year.

Abbotsford PGA Tour pro Nick Taylor tees off at the UFV Cascades Pro-Am tournament held Monday at Chilliwack GREG LAYCHAK Black Press Golf Club.

PGA Tour pros return to roots Cascades event paired professionals with amateurs

Brandon KOSTINUK Abbotsford News

On Monday, the University of Fraser Valley Cascades Pro-Am teed off under 30-degree heat and a cascade of handshakes doled out to PGA Tour pros Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin. At the Chilliwack Golf Club, a small crowd of watchful eyes surrounded the first hole to glimpse Abbotsford products Taylor and Hadwin launch their first drives of the day. The tournament set-up involved competing foursomes, each featuring a Vancouver Golf Tour (VGT) pro and three amateurs, playing a two-best ball team format. This year’s Pro-Am was also the event’s first as an official VGT event. Both players were happy to be back in town, and

to play golf no less. “It’s nice to be local,” said Taylor. “If I’m home, it’s easy to come out. It’s really a nondecision,” he added. “It’s fun to see some of the guys and support the event if I can help in any way.” Taylor, who topped just over $1 million in earnings this season, donated a signed flag from his Sanderson Farms Tour win last November as a giveaway. Hadwin also extended his generosity, contributing his white and dark-blue tour bag. “It’s really great to come back, especially with the weather we’re having,” said Hadwin. “Family and friends are here, so this will always be home for me.” Taylor and Hadwin return to the PGA Tour next Continued on A27

week to play in the Travelers Championship, which runs June 25-28. UFV golf coach Chris Bertram was pleased with the event. “We’ve got a terrific field of pros and we’ve got a really good supportive group of amateurs from the local community,” said Bertram. “The day is perfect; the turnout fantastic.” Kevin Stinson was top among pros, finishing at seven-under and taking home $1,200. Hadwin and Chris Lee tied for second at four-under. Lee’s foursome also finished at the top of the leaderboard, with a cumulative score of 21-under-par. That score tied his group with Abbotsford’s Ray Stewart. Abbotsford golfer and two-time Canadian Tour winner James Lepp finished fourth and took home $500. (ARFC) finished third. The Seattle Saracens coached by Fijian sevens legend Waisale Serevi, won the tournament, defeating Burnaby Lake in the finals. Abbotsford Rugby Club coach Ryan McWhinney described the two top squads as “very experienced, big sides.” There are three more tournaments remaining, so Abbotsford does have a chance to improve position in the division. In the women’s division, McWhinney said Abbotsford had the “top core team,” finishing in third place, with the Castaway Wanders of Victoria Rugby Club winning the division. In the men’s social, three Abbotsford squads competed in the 10-team division – Yale Alumni, Finnegan’s and the Heavy Setters. This was the first time Yale entered the seven-a-side tournament. Yale and Finnegan’s met in the plate final, with Finnegan’s securing the win to claim fifth. The size of the Heavy Setters players was a factor, according to McWhinney. The team was organized by ARFC’s Aaron Flagg. “They were competitive, they came away with a couple of wins, but fitness may have been a liability in their pursuit of the cup,” said McWhinney. Tanner Hunter from the Heavy Setters won the men’s award in the drop kick contest, which had more than 20 competitors. The Vod Lounge Skids won the social division, coached by local rugby stud and UBC player Jorden Sandover-Best. The most successful Abbotsford side came from the U-14 division in which Valley East, composed of players from Abbotsford, C h i l l i wa ck and Langley, secured top honours. They will go on to the provincial regional championships in two weeks at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.

Cumiskey hoists cup

Canada advances Abbotsford’s Sophie Schmidt will head into round of 16 action with the Canadian women’s national team Sunday, June 21 after Canada the top-spot in Group ‘A’ with a 1-1 draw versus the Netherlands Monday evening. Canada finished the group stage with one win and a pair of ties. Schmidt and Canada now look to their single-game

knock-out round match at B.C. Place against an opponent to be determined. With just two goals in three round-robin games, Schmidt and Canada will need to find their scoring touch if they hope to advance. Sunday’s game is at 4:30 p.m. Tickets available through fifa.com/canada2015 and Ticketmaster. ca.

Sophie Schmidt and the Canadian women now look to round of 16 action this Sunday.

Local hockey product Kyle Cumiskey hoisted Lord Stanley’s Cup at the United Center last night following the Chicago Blackhawks’ 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The 28-year-old Cumiskey played 16 games for the ‘Hawks this season, including nine in the playoffs. Although he

didn’t play in the cup-clinching game, Cumiskey still got the chance to skate the cup around the ice Monday. Cumiskey first broke into the NHL in 2006 with the Colorado Avalanche, but injuries put the brakes on his career. In 2012, he left North America to suit up for Swedish hockey club Modo.

After two productive seasons in Europe, he signed with Chicago last summer hoping to give the NHL “one more shot.” Although he spent the bulk of the 201415 season with the Blackhawks’ minor league affiliate, Cumiskey was called up this spring after injuries struck Chicago’s blue line.

“By accessing world markets for Canadian oil, we’ll enjoy increased tax dollars and years of employment.” - Deborah Cahill, President, Electrical Contractors Association of B.C.

Coastal access for Canadian oil means an increase of at least $5 per barrel. By getting full value for our oil, everyone will benefit. Workers will gain from the $5.4 billion project. Oil producers will earn more revenue for their product. And Government will collect more tax revenue from oil producers to spend on programs such as health care, education and other services that benefit all British Columbians. Plus, we can invest in new training programs and create new jobs for our youth.

Having trouble managing your Diabetes? Would you like a Diabetes Coach? The University of Victoria and Fraser Health are conducting a study to evaluate the effectiveness of peer coaches for persons with type 2 diabetes. This research study is funded by the Lawson Foundation of Canada. Interested persons must be adults with type 2 diabetes living in the Fraser Health Region and able to speak English or Punjabi. The purpose of the study is to determine whether Diabetes Coaches can assist persons with type 2 diabetes to better manage their condition. Interested persons will be randomly assigned to a group that receives a coach for six months or to a group that receives usual care. For more information please contact: Suzanne (Study Coordinator) at University of Victoria at 604-940-8973.

Youth in care to get education fund Children who grow up in government care without parents setting aside a college fund are being promised a new potential source of aid for their education. The province is putting $250,000 into the newly created Learning Fund for Young Adults (LFYA), which will be available to youth born in 2007 or later once they turn 17, provided they’ve spent at least a year in government care. Disbursements for post-secondary education or vocational training would start in 2024. LFYA is to be an alternative to the

existing BC Training and Education Savings Gran t, which wasn’t available to many youth in care because it required them to have a Registered Education Savings Plan. The province is also transferring $1.5 million into LFYA from the BCTES program account and $500,000 a year in subsequent years. That’s equivalent to $1,200 for each eligible child or youth in care. “Children and youth who have been in government care deserve to have the same opportunities as their peers from

more traditional family backgrounds,” Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux said. The new fund is administered by the Victoria Foundation. Other government programs offer help with tuition and other costs for former youth in care, who may also be eligible for tuition waivers now offered at many post-secondary institutions. The province launched a new website, agedout.com, to provide help with life skills for youth who are about to turn 19 and age out of government assistance.

Miss Teenage Southern B.C. Alexis Gardner and Abbotsford’s Shear Performance Barbershop have come together to put on a local fundraising event. As a title holder, Gardner said she, like other contestants, is required to raise funds for a charity selected by the pageant. In this case, it’s the international charity organization Free the Children (FTC). “It’s a wonderful charity that has helped children in over 40 developing countries,” said Gardner. All proceeds will go to FTC. Gardner said she approached Shear Performance owner Marisa Oborne – a past employer of Gardner – with the idea of putting on an outdoor event for the kids, which will include a hair-cut-athon, ice cream, pop, a balloon station, photo booth and more. Oborne said she was more than happy to help, sand said the hair-cutting will be provided by staff from Shear Performance as well as students from Abbotsford Senior Secondary and Utopia Academy. Men and children can participate with a minimum donation of $5. Gardner said the fundraising goal isn’t extreme – just $400 in donations can help pay for a school, meal plan, supplies or other necessities. Some of the sponsors include Save-onFoods, Dairy Queen, Tracycakes, Perfect Tan and Little Monsters Studio. The event will be held in the parking lot outside Shear Barbershop at 102-2526 Yale Ct on June 20, from 2 to 5 p.m.

The family is extremely grateful for all the wonderful care Ruth received at both the Tertiary ward at Abbotsford Hospital and also at the Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission. including teaching new believers, marriage preparation (with Anne) classes and Sunday school, serving on church boards and greeting people as they arrived at church. After retirement he volunteered as an associate chaplain at Winnipeg International Airport, for seniors visitation, and, after moving to Abbotsford, with the Salvation Army. Jake made friends easily. Jake is survived by his wife of 65 years, Anne; five children: Rick, Terry (Diane), Gail Chamberlain (Paul), Judy Wardrop (Mark), and Tim (Debbie); nine grandchildren, Matthew (Nikki), Christie, James, Tyler Chamberlain (Raechel), James Chamberlain, Lindsey and Kaitlyn Wardrop, Olivia and Lauren; and one great granddaughter, Cadence Chamberlain. Jake will also be remembered by his two remaining sisters, Minnie and Margaret Wiebe (Jake) and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Abbotsford Food Bank.
