Warning: the woods are dry By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

A grass fire near the Malcolm Knapp UBC Research Forest on Saturday evening illustrated how dangerous the present fire conditions are. The woods are so dry, Maple Ridge fire chief Dan Spence said a fire ban could be issued soon. Higher than normal temperatures are predicted this summer across British Columbia because of a trend of warmer water in the Pacific Ocean that influences weather in the Pacific Northwest, according to Environment Canada. May was one of the driest on record, and the trend has continued in June, increasing the fire hazard. The fire Saturday was spotted near a B.C. Hydro right-of-way, in an area frequented by pedestrians. Members of the public found it, but it was soon too big for them to put out, and they dialed 911. See Fire, 5

Frogstone owner apologizes Avoids nurse-in protest at his restaurant By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

It may have been a tough lesson for Todd Pratt, but he learned something in the storm of social media criticism over the treatment a breastfeeding mother received at his restaurant, the Frogstone Grill. His apology came just in time to avoid a nurse-in protest at the res-

taurant, across from Telosky Stadium. Maple Ridge mother of four Brianne McNally posted on her Facebook Page on June 5: “For the first time in almost nine years and four kids, I was asked today by the manager of a restaurant to cover myself with a blanket when nursing my baby. For the reason that “this is a restaurant, and there is food around,” on a very hot day, in a restaurant without air conditioning ... put a blanket over your baby’s head while you feed her. I’d like to see that

woman eat her dinner with a blanket over her head. We will never, ever eat at the Frogstone Grill again.” The post was followed by a large number of supportive comments, such as: “Oh my! That is sickening, I am sorry you had that happen,” from Tisha Scoffins. “Our backwards society embraces breast exposure for everything but breastfeeding, the very thing God created them for,” from Kelly Ablett. “They violated your human rights,” wrote Adelaide Goldberg. “There

have been lawsuits won against restaurants who ask this! “ Goldberg is right, but Pratt wasn’t aware of the law surrounding this issue. He initially defended his staff ’s approach. In what he wrote was his first Facebook post, Pratt said women have been breastfeeding at the Frogstone Grill since it opened 16 years ago. He has three kids, and his grandchild has nursed in the restaurant many times. See Nursing, 18

According to Boyd Mason, project manager, the new gates on the dam will be twice as thick as the old ones to withstand earthquakes. Phil Melnychuk/ THE NEWS

Ruskin Dam renovations half done By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

T

he odd-shaped light bulb with its twisted filament and old fashioned wiring shows the age of the 85-year-old dam.

It’s a relic from another era, before the Second World War, the Cold War, 9-11 and ISIS, and it’s been turned on, producing a warm, orange glow, since the Ruskin Dam opened in November 1930. “This thing has been turned on, to our knowledge, once,” Brian Mason told a tour of politicians and assistants last week. “That’s an urban legend,” added the manager of the $800-million refit project. It’s not certain when the light was first switched on and if it’s ever been off, he explained. But it’s a link between the old and the new in Ruskin Dam, halfway through a renovation that will see the dam strengthened to survive a one in 10,000-year-earthquake,

Phil Melnychuk/THE NEWS

Half of the new generator awaits installation. while new generators and turbines will squeeze the most electricity from every drop of water. The estimated cost of the Ruskin Dam and Powerhouse Upgrade Project is about $718 million, according to an April 2012 release from B.C. Hydro. That differs from a fall of 2011 backgrounder, which said the project will cost between $718 and $857 million.

By the time the modernization is complete, new generators and turbines will produce eight per cent more power, while the substation jangle of towers and cables will be removed from the roof of the power house to a more scenic location on the banks. The public will like one feature of the upgrade. There now will be a two-lane road on top of the dam, instead of just one, allowing easier passage back and forth. There will be space for bicycles and pedestrians, as well. Still to be installed are the new turbines, which will absorb the power of the falling water, then turn the shafts of three generators that will be partly rebuilt or new. To save about $8 million, B.C. Hydro rebuilt the rotor, or rotating part of the generators, and installed new stators, the stationary part of the generators that produce the power. Seven old piers and gates are being replaced by five larger, stronger gates, and six new piers, creating a completely new appearance of the structure. The new gates will weigh twice that of the old ones and have double the amount of steel. Mason said the new gates on the dam will be twice as thick as the old ones to withstand

earthquakes. “There’s a lot of innovation and imagination that’s gone into this facility to minimize costs.” Local suppliers and labour predominate on the project. One task that had to be done was removing crumbling concrete from the face of the spillway. That requires shutting some of the gates while the work was going on, a difficult challenge when this November heavy rains had the reservoir almost overflowing. Instead of sandblasting, high-pressure water was used to remove the old material. “It’s a giant pressure washer.” That technique is the quietest and was chosen to minimize disturbance to the residents of Ruskin. “We really like our neighbours. We don’t want to upset them,” said Mason. Rebuilt rotors will be placed into new stators. The rotation of the magnetized coils in the generators will generate enough power for 33,000 homes. Mason championed B.C. Hydro’s clean power. “You don’t see coal dust on the windows. We’re all breathing the air without choking.”

Injured ATV rider rescued Art Works Busy time for search team

By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

Search team members rescue an ATV rider who fell down a 10-metre embankment and suffered broke his leg in east Maple Ridge on Saturday. The call came in at about 8 p.m., Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue leader Rick Laing said the rider was fortunate that his friends knew where he would likely be riding, and responded quickly to the call for help. He was about four

hours overdue. His friends located him, but they weren’t able to rescue the injured man due to the steep terrain. As the search team was staging on the north end of 256th Street, the friends arrived on scene with their information. He was off a B.C. Hydro access road, about 5 km from the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women. The search team stabilized the patient, who was conscious but in pain, and used a rope hauling system to get the stretcher to waiting paramedics. The accident happened at about 3:30 p.m. The rider was res-

‘Rating is high’ Fire from front

By the time firefighters got the call at 7 p.m. and arrived on scene, it had grown to about 500 square feet in size. Spence would not speculate on the cause, but said any careless use of combustibles such as a cigarette butt could set off a blaze in the current conditions. What’s more, he said, embers can cause secondary fires in these conditions. “We are getting extreme fire behaviour when we have fires.” “We’re approaching a point soon where we’ll be looking to ban outdoor fires,” said Spence. “People have to be very careful.” The fire department will monitor the humidex, the Ministry of Forests’ fire danger ratings for the area, and the weather forecast. Currently, the fire danger rating in south-

There are no campfire bans in B.C., but before lighting a campfire, you must have a shovel or at least eight litres of water nearby to extinguish the fire. It must be kept to 50 cm in size at the base and height. Police say they’ll keep an eye on the two houses in the 22600-block of Brown. “The use of illegal drugs has a definite link to incidents of property crime, as it is a fact that some drug users steal to support their addiction. cued some six hours later. Laing said the incident underlines an important safety consideration. “When you’re ATVing or dirt biking, you should always be riding with someone.” If not for the man’s friends, he would likely have spent more of his evening injured and lying in the forest. Laing said it has been a busy time for the search team, and that was its 10th call since

the beginning of May. There is no pattern, as members have had all types of calls, from wilderness searches, a medical rescue, a boat call and a search for an Alzheimer’s patient. Laing would rather not be so busy, but it keeps the team members sharp. “We train for these things, and to be able to use the skills in real life makes us that much better for the next time.”

Show respect It sometimes seems that in her quest to seem young and hip, Christy Clark forgets that her job as Premier of B.C. requires a certain level of decorum and respect. Christy Clark once again demonstrated how oblivious she can be, creating another fracas with her attempt to host an International Day of Yoga event. “Om the Bridge” would have seen Vancouver’s busy Burrard Bridge closed for several hours on June 21, and set the province back $150,000. June 21 is the first day of summer. It’s also, as many people are aware — though apparently not Premier Clark — National Aboriginal Day. Clark apparently still hasn’t learned a lesson that most people learn in their childhood, that showing respect creates respect in turn. When it comes to dealing with B.C.’s First Nations, showing respect is a key piece of the puzzle. It would be hard to describe how much disrespect Clark showed by organizing — and planning to attend this event — on the same day. And she didn’t stop there, taking to Twitter on Thursday to mock the people expressing concern over Om the Bridge. The whole sorry mess fell apart on June 12, when Clark announced she wouldn’t be attending Om the Bridge. It’s worth noting that in Clark’s 220-word announcement that she wouldn’t be attending the event, only 23 words were dedicated to National Aboriginal Day — the rest was about the wonders of yoga. Nor did Clark mention anything she might be doing on the 21st to honour Canada’s First Peoples. One Twitter user, Peter McCartney, summed up Clark’s attitude pretty well when he suggested the premier was “showing all the maturity of a 12-yearold.” Though perhaps that is doing a disservice to 12 year olds. Most of them have a better idea of what respect for themselves and others entails. Perhaps we could find a 12-year-old to offer Clark some basic lessons? – Black Press

Unconditional love and support “I know everything, Daddy.” So proclaimed my daughter one day in her third year of existence. Me too, I smiled. Last week, she graduated from Grade 12. Commentary Those early words Andy Holota heralded a child’s journey in an endless accumulation of knowledge. Little did I realize at the time, my own all-knowing state would, in her view, diminish over the coming years – particularly in early teenhood, when dad would be frequently relegated to irritation status. As alarming as this was, I took solace in the fact that other fathers, and most mothers, were experiencing the same phenomenon. How could it be that we knew so much before our children were born, and carried that lofty mantle through their early years, yet watched as our titles as Knowers of All Things Worth Knowing steadily morphed into The Perpetually Addled? For young parents, there’s no need to be overly concerned about this. Your wisdom doesn’t really become lost. The trick is to stay engaged and committed through the process. Be a relentlessly loving, patient teacher and supporter.

Through the process, your offspring’s perception of your worldly acuity becomes restored, albeit about a third of your lifetime later. Here’s the other thing: While she’s learning, so are you. It’s the most wonderful, confounding, frustrating, rewarding, utterly important adventure of your life, and before you know it, a large slice of it has been consumed. As she walked across the stage, accepting her diploma and scholarship accolades, I relived her first hours in this world, when we gazed into each other’s eyes, in equal wonderment. I thought of the countless times we curled on the couch and read books. I remembered her amazement and delight as we travelled to different parts of the world. And I ruefully recalled the frequent occasions in the not-too-distant past where I felt as though I was an incessantly barking dog. What an incredible project, this parenting gig. I’m not sure there can a greater sense of accomplishment. The opportunity to make a terrible mess of it is really quite immense. The potential to raise a smart, caring contributor to society is even more remarkable. And, as probably most parents leaving the ceremonies were reminding themselves, it’s far from over – although there’s a measure of that, since many of us will see our grads leave

home at the end of summer. Like most aspects of parenthood, descriptors of changes like “empty-nest syndrome” don’t begin to articulate the feelings. Empty-heart syndrome is more like it. From daily contact and interaction, family suppers every night, homework projects and weekend activities, to texts, phone calls and occasional visits? Inconceivable, but real. How can a university possibly take the place of “home?” Yet it does. And eventually, she will have her own home, and we would wish it no other way. Nevertheless, my role now seems somewhat uncertain. For the past 18 years, it was so clearly, solidly defined. Although, perhaps it doesn’t really change too much. Give unconditional love. Provide unfaltering support. All children deserve that from their parents. I did, and I am eternally grateful for it, and the opportunity to do so myself. Now, my beautiful girl, step forward on your new path. Challenge yourself, and live your dreams. Care about your world. No mom and dad could be prouder. And as always, if you need me, I’ll be there. But you know all that. THE NEWS/letters Work together Editor, The News: Re: Housing solutions eyed (The News, June 12). I wanted to comment on Neil Corbett’s excellent article on housing solutions for our homeless populations. I really like the idea of the portables or micro houses and feel that they would be a solution for many of the poorer people in our communities who need less expensive housing. Renting has become very expensive in the Greater Vancouver area and it is simply too much for some residents. This alternative could be a welcome relief for those people who are poorer and need cheap rent. It would certainly be better then just moving the homeless around from one area to another, like they did last week, with some of them ending up in my back yard (the former ghetto,) which did not last very long. They were moved out within three hours and were off to the next field. I thank our mayor and councillors for making the effort on finding lasting solutions to this Canadian epidemic of homelessness. I wish her success in her endeavors to resolve this issue. We have to work together to solve this homelessness problem and the senor levels of government must do their part to assist our city. Property owners are paying Editor, The News: Re: Property owners should pay (Letters, June 12). I am always happy when people express their opinion; we are so lucky to live in a free society. But it is our responsibility to make sure the information we provide is correct and, unfortunately, Cherryl Katnich communicated incorrect information. The Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association is a non-profit association, led by a volunteer board of directors and funded by a special business improvement association levy, only paid by commercial property owners, who own properties within the DMRBIA area. Yes, the levy is collected by the City of Maple Ridge with the property tax, but clearly noted as “BIA levy” and, again, only collected from those commercial property owners noted previously. The city distributes the collected levy, which is the DMRBIA budget on an annual basis. The DMRBIA area is a geographical area, clearly outlined between 222nd and 230th streets between Brown Avenue and Lougheed Highway. This area includes about 300 prop-

erty owners and about 700 businesses. The DMRBIA goes back to its members every five years to confirm approval of the continuation of the association from its members; a five-year bylaw has to be approved by council to continue BIA for another five-year mandate. The Facade Improvement Program is just one of many programs developed by the DMRBIA to improve the overall streetscape of downtown Maple Ridge, and this particular program has been very successful for the past six years. Starting in 2009 until and including 2014, we received 63 applications, approved 59, of which 57 completed. DMRBIA granted a total of about $240,000 over those six years. Just to put that in perspective, that $240,000 initiated a total of approximately $5 million of facade improvements in downtown Maple Ridge. The city houses a lot of older buildings, most of which really could uses some sprucing up. Hopefully people are noticing all the positive changes that have happened and will continue to happen, throughout the years in downtown Maple Ridge. New facades, fresh paint, new awnings, banners, flower baskets, bike racks, community Christmas Tree,

Twice that Editor, The News: Re: Property owners should pay (Letters, June 12). Cherryl Katnich is complaining about business owners getting grants from the city to improve their business appearance. The point of this grant is to make the city businesses look good for all to benefit. The implication is that Ms. Katnich feels that her taxes are paying for these improvements. That is not correct. Businesses pay property taxes of over twice that of homeowner. Dan Banov Maple Ridge

Supreme Court to decide on new trial for Hecimovic Acquitted of dangerous driving causing death in 2013 B y Phil Mel nyc hu k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

The next obstacle in the five-year-long ordeal for Debbie Dyer is in November in Ottawa. Supreme Court of Canada justices will decide then if Andelina Kristina Hecimovic will face a new trial or allow the original acquittal from 2013 to stand. Hecimovic initially was acquitted of dangerous driving causing death following an Oct. 19, 2010 accident on the Lougheed Highway at Harris Road. Debbie’s daughter,

Beckie Dyer, 19, and Johnny De Oliveria, 21, died after their Suzuki Swift was struck by a Toyota driven by Hecimovic. The Toyota had flipped, landing on top of the Suzuki. In the initial trial in September 2013, Justice Miriam Gropper ruled that Hecimovic was not trying to beat the red light. Hecimovic told the court she was thinking about her nursing shift and suddenly smelled something odd as she approached the intersection. When she looked at her scrubs she noticed vomit on

her shirt and burst into tears. She was trying to wipe the tears off her face and focus on the road when she realized she had run a red light. However, last October 2014, the B.C. Court of Appeal ordered a new trial, which also allows the accused the right to appeal that to the Supreme Court of Canada. Debbie Dyer said she might go to Ottawa to attend the Nov. 5 Supreme Court session, or she might watch it via Supreme Court TV channel. If the original acquittal is upheld, “then we’re done,” said Dyer. The nine justices could also order a conviction or a new trial, the latter

of which would take another year. Dyer wants a conviction so the case doesn’t set a precedent. Five years after the death of her daughter, life doesn’t get easier for the Pitt Meadows resident. “Your life doesn’t get any better. It changes. When you lose your child, you lose all sense of happiness and what’s important in your life.” She wants to keep the story about the trial and her daughter public so people think about their driving. It only takes a split second for an accident to happen and distracted driving continues to increase. “It’s getting worse than drinking and driving.”

Citizens make suggestions for open gov’t By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

ing government more transparent, Maple Ridge council earlier approved two earlier recommendations from the task force. Council earlier in the year approved the livestreaming of the council workshop meetings and committee of the whole meetings that take place on Mondays, continuing a process that was started by the previous council. With regular Tuesday meetings also livestreamed, people can now watch all council meetings on their computer. “I think that’s fabulous,” said Wagner. “I think it shows they’re

really serious.” Council has also ordered that basic information about contracts the city has signed be public. Read also attended the public input session. She agreed that city or mayoralty announcements made on social media also should be on the city’s website to ensure there is a record of communications. Two letters released concerning the homeless camp on Cliff Avenue were posted on the Maple Ridge Resilience Initiative Facebook page but are not actually posted on the city’s website.

They’ve heard the ideas on how to open up Maple Ridge city hall, now the citizen’s representative committee will put them altogether and pass on the ideas to the politicians. And one of those ideas could be for Maple Ridge to expand its council from seven to nine members. “We had a really good turnout [June 3],” said Katherine Wagner, chair of the committee, also known as the citizen representatives working group. “We had speakers for two hours and the room was packed.” Two meetings were scheduled to allow public input. One was cancelled, leaving the other drawing all the input. People were concerned about communications, fair processes, customer service and access to information at city hall, said Wagner. They wanted to ensure information was accessible and easy to find. “Sometimes you have to read between the lines,” about what people want. One idea was to expand the size of council from seven to nine, which Maple Ridge is entitled to do based on its population. That would allow more councillors to directly connect with the public. Wagner likes the idea. “It’s a huge workload on council.” Operating an open government does take more resources, she added. Some people from eastern Maple Ridge showed up saying they weren’t getting the information they needed on the medical marijuana facility being built on 272nd Street. “The frustration I felt was they just felt they weren’t getting enough information.” Wagner, who runs

the Facebook group Maple Ridge Council Watch, said the more open a government is in its functions, “the less chance of anything untoward going on.” Now that feedback has come in from the public via e-mail and the public meeting, the citizen’s group will compile a report for month end and present it to the mayor’s open government task force, composed of Mayor Nicole Read and Couns. Corisa Bell and Tyler Shymkiw. “I assume the report is going to be made public,” said Wagner. While the task force works on the grass roots input on mak-

It’s all about the animals B y M a g d a l e n a R o m a n ow

Animal shelters are, in many cases, safe havens for animals who have been abandoned by their owners. Other than being a stray, the reasons for animals losing their home are endless – too old, too fat, too sick, the owners are moving, the cat scratched the couch, it meows too much, it cuddles too much, it’s aggressive, it does not use the litter box appropriately. So we take these animals in, many are broken in one way or another. We have them checked out by our vets. We isolate them to observe them. Cats can go into a deep depression after they are discarded by their owners and refuse to eat. This leads to liver failure, and at times death. Once we feel that the animal is eating and adjusting to the shelter, we let them into communal areas with other felines. Once they have been released, we watch their interaction with the other cats. Often we get very little information about the past of the animals we take in. So we have to get to know them. We watch them around kids. Around loud noises. Are they hiding? Are they afraid of males? Females? Do they jump in the lap of every person who enters their pen? There are several volunteers who study the newcomers. We make notes about them and compare them to see if we agree on the

personality. For example, we try to predict the type of home that would be best suited for a cat that pees inappropriately. What is the trigger for this behaviour? Can it change in a new home? What type of home would be ideal? None of this is an exact science, but we work hard to learn as much as we can about these animals. Our final purpose is to find them the perfect home. We are honest about their inappropriate behavior. We try and provide a potential adopter with as much information as we can. Some people decide not to take a cat because he is aggressive with other cats, while others may decide to take the chance and dedicate themselves to making it work. The bottom line is that the business of an animal shelter is to care for the animals, and ensure that they go into a proper home. Some people believe that they are doing us a favour by adopting a cat. They might be, but only if the cat fits into their home. If it does not, we know that, sooner or later, the cat will be returned to the shelter. Each time they come back their issues intensify. So if you apply for an animal, any animal at any rescue, and you are not approved as a home, it means that the staff, knowing that animal, don’t think that it’s the right fit for you. We are here strictly for the welfare of the animals, not to pacify humans. – Magdalena Romanow is a volunteer at Katie’s Place, an animal shelter in Maple Ridge.

We were so fortunate that five Shoppers Drug Mart locations (Pitt Meadows, Shaughnessy, Fremont, Westgate and east Maple Ridge) banded together for the annual Tree of Life Campaign, raising $10,000 for women’s health care at Ridge Meadows Hospital. They chose to designate the funds toward a $38,000 colonoscope, which aids in the early detection and diagnosis of colon cancer. Thank you to the amazing Shoppers Drug Mart team and to all their customers for the support. Pictured are representatives from the five participating Shoppers Drug Marts – Pitt Meadows, Shaughnessy, Fremont, Westgate and east Maple Ridge.

Last year was a busy and rewarding year, and we’re already moving in the right direction to make this year even better, but we need your help. The support of people like you, people who reply on RMH to keep our community healthy and strong, is vitally important. We can’t move forward without you. Please send your gift today.

Laura Butler, development officer for the RMHF, said this year’s event, June 7, saw 420 people “ready to run for health care.” She said the jump in participants, up from 369 in 2014, is an encouraging sign as the foundation targets raising $600,000 for 2015. She said while the final count isn’t in, to date it has raised more than $40,000 from this year’s event. “The weather was fantastic,” said Butler. “There was lot’s of families out having fun and we even had neighbours out with their hoses spraying runners down because of the heat.”

The 12th annual Fund Run for Ridge Meadows Hospital drew more runners than past years, surpassing 400 this year. The money raised from the event will help go towards the foundation’s wish list of equipment to purchase this year. Butler said some of the items the foundation hopes to purchase

include a $37,000 ventilator for the intensive care unit, a $12,000 centrifuge for lab work, and a $17,000 cystoscope for the operating room. Butler said with the

run in the books, the foundation will start to work on its annual gala fundraiser. The Arabian Nights event will be held on Oct. 17 at Meadow Gardens.

Renaissance Fest interactive event Fairgrounds turned into Steller’s Grove By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

I

n the village of Steller’s Grove, somewhere on the south coast of England in 1515, when the world was emerging from the Dark Ages, verbal jabs were as quick as those from a sword or dagger. “Go back to your needlework and embroidery,” said one following a sword fight with a female member of the Renaissance Festival cast. “I care not if I won with one pass or five. The fact that I’ve worn my opponent into the ground is victory enough for me,” a victorious rider said after a jousting match. One of the knights complained about having a slow horse for the event, that it falls asleep while walking. “I admire his work ethic,” someone in the crowd commented. For a few moments on the weekend, the Albion Fairgrounds had turned into Steller’s Grove as the Renaissance Festival returned for a second time. “We really like the location,” said Martin Hunger, in charge of security of the weekend event. Hunger said he liked the Renaissance period, set in the times of King Henry Eighth, because it was a rising out of the Dark Ages, when trade and science were both growing. Unlike historical re-enactment societies that take pains to ensure every artifact is accurate, the Renaissance Festival is a theatrical event, during which actors say their lines and jokes and interact with the crowd. “For us, as performers, it’s another way to escape,” he said. “It’s a way of challenging themselves as performers. “This is a whole new challenge for people. It’s sort of what we call theatre in the crowd.”

Tim Fitzgerald/THE NEWS

(Clockwise) Melissa Housser plays the character ‘Flora’ as she sneaks up on Tanya Kozak, playing ‘Summer the Fairy’ during the 9th annual B.C. Renaissance Festival Friday at the Albion Fairgrounds; Melissa Garza, playing ‘Lady Maeve, Mistress of the Horse’, prepares Ryan Roberts, ‘Sir Alcwyn,’ for a jousting battle; Ed Appleby plays the pirate ‘First Mate Cobbs’ in a reenactment in the courtyard of King Henry Eighth.

By allowing commentary from the crowd, actors have to be quick on their feet to respond, while keeping the sketches moving along. Mock sword fights are part of the show, minus the blood packs that spatter red when someone is killed. Those are used in the U.S., but Canadian audiences aren’t used to that much gore.

Still, the weapons are real enough and have to be fastened in their scabbards or holsters unless they belong to an actor. Former pro wrestler Ed Appleby got involved because festival theatre is the chance to get deep into character. “Adding the swords were just a little bit extra.”

More realism was apparent in the jousting, in which horses and riders, wearing 40 kilograms of steel armour, run full tilt at each other in attempt to knock each other off their horses. The lances used by the jousters are hemlock and shatter on impact, when they hit the shield on the opposing rider. But riders are

knocked off their horses. “It’s really an adrenaline rush. It’s a unique sport. It’s not staged,” said Alex Mickschl, a Spokane firefighter, from his horse named Lancelot. “We have a few broken bones. “We’re just one notch back of what they really did, back in the day.”

Maple Ridge’s elite play for charity NHLers Victor Bartley and Brad Hunt star By Neil Corbett sports@mapleridgenews.com

Y DUCK R AR

E AC

RO T

The team with two NHL defencemen beat the team with one in the second annual reunion shinny game that has become known as the Charity Classic. Team Bartley and its namesake Victor Bartley of the Nashville Predators had some surprise reinforcements in the person of Swiss defenceman Mirco Muller, who played half a season for the San Jose Sharks, and has a friend in town. Bartley and Brad Hunt were the local favourites. Bartley, who has 111 NHL games with the Preds, might be a stayat-home defenceman in the NHL, but he looked like he could score whenever he wanted to on Saturday. Hunt still needs a breakthrough campaign to build on his NHL resume of 14 games, including 11 with the Edmonton Oilers, but he’s too good to leave on their farm team – he was an AHL all-star with 51 points in 62 games. They led teams of players with university and junior hockey experience in a display of the best hockey talent from the city. It is a no-hit event with the same feel as an all-star game. But organizer Ben Payne, who enjoyed a great campaign in the German pro leagues with the Zweibrucken Hornets, was one of the guys who would get the puck and take off, pushing the pace to put on a show for the hundreds of fans. “It was great – good tempo and a lot of good talent from Maple ridge,” said Payne. Last year he and Bartley organized the game as a fundraiser for Crohn’s and Colitis. They raised $5,000, and this year they built on that, upping the total to more than $6,500. Eli Pears won a hockey stick auto-

graphed by the Nashville Predators, and there was other outstanding memorabilia up for auction, including jerseys signed by Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews and Montreal Canadiens star P.K. Subban. Paul Craik won the 50/50 raffle prize of $367, and then donated it back to the cause. “It went extremely well,” said Payne. “Much more professional and smooth.” He said the kids of Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey enjoy watching local hockey idols play, and next year he would like to get them more involved, perhaps with an afternoon ball hockey game.

A

ball player who threw his first pitches in the Ridge Meadows Minor Baseball system has been drafted by a Major League

team. Devon Stewart, who has wrapped up a college hardball career with Canisius in New York State, was picked by the Cleveland Indians in the ninth round, 274th overall. “I knew there were a few teams interested,” said Stewart, who is back in Maple Ridge this week. He was watching the draft, and at the beginning of the ninth round, the Indians called and asked if he would sign a contract with the club if they drafted him. It wasn’t a long negotiation. “I wasn’t too worried about the money – I just want to go and play baseball,” he said. The Canadian kid dreamed of being drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays, but Cleveland was also at the top of his wish list of teams. “It’s a really good organization,” he said. “They really like to bring their own guys up through their organization.” The MLB club keeps all of its farm teams within a two-hour drive of Cleveland. Stewart will start his pro career in short season single-A this summer, coming out of the bullpen for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in Niles, Ohio. “It’s going to be better competition there, but I’m used to it. I think I can compete,” said Stewart. He has been a starter in college ball. He went 7-7 with an ERA of 3.84. Over 16 starts, he pitched 98.1 innings, and struck out 75 while walking only 24. After the college season last year, he went and pitched in Alaska for the Anchorage Bucs. They put him in the bullpen, in middle relief. But by the end of the season, he had won the closer’s job, and he likes his new role. “Coming out of the pen, I can put 100 per cent into every pitch,” he said, and that meant his fastball was in the 92-94 mph range, compared with 90-92 as a starter. In 15.1 innings pitched for the Bucs over nine appearances, he gave up just two earned runs. He throws a fastball, slider and changeup. And he’s embracing the role of reliever, pointing out how the Kansas City Royals’ excellent bullpen carried them all the way to the World Series last year, and the New York Yankees are leading their division thanks in large part to a potent pen. “The way baseball is shifting could be a benefit to me.” Success can come quickly to a talented young pitcher, and a good young arm is never left to languish long in the minors. Hopefully by the end of the season, I’ll have moved up a bit.” He is thankful to local coaches, including Nor Lundren, and also to the Langley Blaze, for which he played his high school years. “They do an unreal job of getting guys exposure,” he said.

His goal with the Blaze was to land a scholarship. Once with Canisius, the objective was team success – and the school won conference championships in two of his four seasons, including his senior year. He’s a biology major, and was pre-med. At the same time, he hit the gym hard, worked on his pitches, and turned himself into a major league prospect. “It’s nice to see all the hard work pay off.” One of his favourite pitchers is Madison Bumgarner of the San Francisco Giants.

“I watched him in the World Series and he pitched on short rest, and he was still able to compete at the highest level he possibly could.” Another favourite is Corey Kluber, the ace of the Indians pitching staff, whom he calls a special pitcher with a mid-90s fastball, a really good breaking ball and clean mechanics. At 29, he had only started 36 games when he put together a Cy Young award-winning campaign last season. Seeing Kluber interviewed, Stewart takes heart at his message to other athletes. He paraphrases: “Just keep pitching and be patient, and you’ll get your opportunities.”
