First Nation aims for self-sufficiency I
SNAW-NAW-AS SIGNED agreement-in-principle with province. BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN

Jayden Olsen, 5, was on his way to his kindergarten graduation ceremony at Brechin United Church when he stopped to check out a restored vintage pedal car for sale at a flea market. Flea markets are held Wednesday throughout the summer in the church parking lot at the corner of Brechin and Estevan roads.
Council considers six-month extension on hotel BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN
Hotel developer SSS Manhao could still win a reprieve on the city’s buy-back clause, despite failure to get a oneyear contract extension. Nanaimo city council will consider giving SSS Manhao six more months to apply for a building permit before it decides whether to exercise its right to buy back the hotel property. The extension would be in exchange for SSS Manhao committing $100,000 to Piper Park improvements, and the loss of the Right of First Negotiation to operate the Vancouver Island Confer-
ence Centre. Council had a three-hour debate on a one-year extension for the hotel Monday, with the majority of politicians stating a dislike of the current contract. Coun. Gord Fuller wanted to see the property put back up for sale, which SSS Manhao could re-purchase and a new contract struck, while Coun. Bill Bestwick talked about a performance bond. Lawyer Perr y Ehrlich, speaking on behalf of SSS Manhao, said the suggestion of a new contract means the company would have to start from scratch on everything. His clients spent upwards of $4.4 million and are com-
mitted to moving forward. Project completion dates will remain unchanged, Ehrlich said. “My client was of the mistaken belief that because of the money they invested and because of their sincerity in coming here and building this project in the first place an extension would not be a problem,” he said. Nanaimo city council voted 5-4 against the one-year extension, but agreed to look into a six-month extension. The issue returns to council Monday (June 22). Council plans to meet with SSS Manhao representatives as early as tomorrow. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Snaw-naw-as First Nation Chief David Bob sits in shaded grass outside a north Nanaimo business, as cars roar by, and considers what he wants for his people, whose territory once stretched from French Creek to Pipers Lagoon. Snaw-naw-as is one of five Te’mexw Member First Nations in the B.C. Treaty process, a journey toward self-sufficiency and government. Member nations, federal and provincial government completed an agreement-in-principle this April, bringing the parties to the fourth of a six-stage process where “serious negotiations” can begin around issues like fisheries and hunting. That they have come this far is a reason to celebrate, especially with the province re-evaluating its stance on the treaty issue, said Bob. But there’s also cautious optimism. Former Snaw-naw-as chief Wilson Bob started the treaty process 25 years ago. It was believed then that self-sufficiency was five years away, but leaders have seen elections and changes in negotiation teams. David Bob hopes when the province looks into the treaty negotiations, the truth comes out – that the reason it’s taken so long is because of stonewalling by provin-
cial and federal governments. There’s also caution because the agreement is non-binding and it remains to be seen what is going to be negotiated. “Are they serious or are they just playing us along?” Bob asked. “After 25 years, it’s kind of hard to say.” For a nation like Nanoose, the goal of the treaty process is to be self-sufficient. Snaw-naw-as want to make use of natural resources around them and be a part of decisions made within their traditional territory. The reserve is 60 hectares and that’s all they will have until the treaty is signed, according to Bob, who says it’s a battle to decide what to save for future generations and what to develop. By keeping land undeveloped, it feeds into the dependency on government for handouts and “we don’t want to do that,” he said. His vision is to see them at 80 per cent employment instead of 80 per cent unemployment, and have the right to decide how their homes are built. With a treaty, they will finally become partners in deciding what becomes of traditional land, he said. “We won’t have a final say – you’d be living in a dream world if you figure that’s going to happen. But we get to sit and talk, where in the past [other governments] just decided what they wanted to do and didn’t consult with us.” In a phrase, this is about wanting to be an equal government partner. “It’s as simple as that,” he said.

Vandalism treated as hate crime
I
RCMP iNvEStigatE racial slurs painted on advertisements. By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN
Police in Nanaimo are looking for suspects behind vandalism that targeted Chinese real estate agents. The vandalism happened over the weekend, probably early Sunday morning police estimate, when eight bus stop bench advertisements were spray painted with ethnic slurs. A swastika was painted on one bench. Mounties currently have no suspects or witnesses. Police were also looking into some pamphlets that were distributed to homes in Nanaimo earlier in the month. The pamphlets, produced by a group calling itself Putting Canada First, demanded city officials take steps to ensure housing remains affordable and “that the wonderful character of our community will remain intact.” A second pamphlet distributed by the same group displayed photos of the benches bearing the advertisements that displayed the realtors’ faces.
A CHAIR
Those benches, located between Stephenson Point Road and Malaspina Crescent, were targeted by vandals days later. Const. Gar y O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said when he “forwarded this to our hate crimes [investigators], they said this didn’t constitute a hate crime. “It’s upsetting, and morally upsetting, but it didn’t meet the standards of a hate crime, but they’re taking a second look at it.” The bus stop bench vandalism is being treated as a hate crime because of the content of the racial slurs and that they appeared to be specifically targeting Chinese realtors. An e-mail response to the News Bulletin attributed to Paul Duncan Bentley, Putting Canada First chairman said, “...acts of vandalism and racist slogans are antithetical to our efforts.” The statement went on to say the organization encourages people to write to politicians and media with their concerns about “real estate abuse” in a peaceful and rational manner and all members have to agree to a code of conduct before they are accepted by the organization. Hilde Schlosar, executive
director of the Central Vancouver Island Multicultral Society, said she reported the pamphlets to the RCMP and contacted the realtors to see if they wanted to take any action. “Basically something like that just gives closet racists permission to act out what they might be thinking,” Schlosar said. Schlosar characterized the vandalism as a cowardly, fear-based act and said there are people in Nanaimo who are racist and “hate everybody” but they don’t reflect the majority of people here. “The most important thing is that we keep sending the message that says we are a welcoming community, we are an inclusive community,” Schlosar said. “Everybody can live here and feel safe and feel they belong and this is their home.” Creative Outdoors, the company responsible for the bus stop bench ads, is carrying out the cleanup, which could cost up to $1,000. Anyone with information about this incident, please contact the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, text 274637 with keyword Nanaimo, or leave a tip online at www. nanaimocrimestoppers.com.

New supportive housing model pitched By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
A proposed townhouse development will open its doors to people with developmental disabilities. Nanaimo Association for Community Living, a non-profit supporting people with developmental disabilities, wants to build a $2.5-million townhouse development at 3425 Uplands Dr. Rented to a blend of people with developmental disabilities and low-end of market renters, it will be the first development of its kind for the organization and anticipated to fill a gap. Not all residents in the area are on board, with concerns about the potential renters, traffic and the loss of peace and tranquility. But Marg Fraser finds the housing exciting. It’s a culmination of a four-year vision by a group of Nanaimo parents who wanted assisted-living for their children, where they could live in an apartment-like spaces surrounded by their peers and still get support. For Fraser’s 35-yearold daughter Leanne, it could also means a place of her own. “She’s always known she needs a degree of support, but she wanted to move away from home
and she wanted to move into her own space,” said Fraser, who sees this model as exactly what Leanne wanted and assures she will be living in safe, affordable and comfortable environment. Nanaimo has options for housing for people with developmental disabilities, from independent living to group homes and home-shares with caregivers. But there’s a lack of housing for people “in the middle” – those who still need some help but are also independent, according to Nanaimo Association for Community Living executive director Graham Morry. Morry, who has heard concern about the mix of tenants, said his vision is of an inclusive environment. Already more people want to live there than there’s room to house. Security was a concern for the parent group, according to Marilyn Chapman. She said this proposal is different from the parents’ vision and she’s not convinced two different tenant groups is a good idea, but still sees the project as innovative. The project will go to public hearing as part of a rezoning process. Currently, no financing is in place. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Flags fly together

Snuneymuxw First Nation will see its flag fly at city hall for the first time this Sunday. Mayor Bill McKay and Snuneymuxw Chief John Wesley will see the flags of their governments billow side-by-side on National Aboriginal Day (June 21), beginning at 11 a.m. The mayor said it recognizes two councils govern the community together. It’s about building strong relationships, co-operation and friendship with the Snuneymuxw. “This is not a symbol,” McKay said, “This is intended to be proof we are not only talking the talk, but walking the walk. We need to work together with the Snuneymuxw.” Coun. Bill Yoachim, a former Snuneymuxw councillor, is proud of the recognition and honoring of Snuneymuxw peoples. “The flag-raising and the Snuneymuxw flag being at the city just shows we are standing shoulder to shoulder and it’s recognizing each other, which is a great, great starting ground in the era of reconciliation,” he said.

WEStErN ForESt Products spending $30 million on facility. By Chris Bush The News BulleTIN
Western Forest Products is banking on future business and $30 million to upgrade its mills in Nanaimo, Ladysmith and Chemainus. Company executives and B.C. Premier Christy Clark made the announcement June 11 at Western Forest Products’ Duke Point mill. The investment is part of the company’s $125-million capital strategic investment program, announced in 2013, to remain competitive and help it gain access to new markets. “Our strategy is to invest in the mills, make them extremely efficient, and then add more hours to our production facilities and that’s where we’ll see the job increase,” said Don Demens, Western Forest Products president and chief executive officer. The company will spend $28 million to modernize the sawmill, planer mill and install new auto-

“It will make it the most efficient specialty-product planer on the coast of B.C.,” Demens said. The remaining $2 million will be divided between its other central Island mills. The investment comes at a time when prices are low and there is little demand from the new home
construction industry in the U.S. For certain wood products there is strong competition in foreign markets from other lumber-producing countries. “Markets over the last few months have been pretty challenging,” Demens said. “We’ve seen a slow start to the building season in the United States and China has been a bit of a challenge, but on the long term we believe that there’s a resurgence in the U.S. home construction business. Continued strength in the repair and remodelling sector will drive the demand for lumber higher and we expect that will have an effect on all of our business.” Clark was on hand for the investment announcement even though the government is not contributing to Western Forest Products’ investments. Clark said the forest industry plays a vital role in the Island’s economy and Western Forest Products’ investment ensures jobs stay in Nanaimo. The Nanaimo mill employs about 75 workers. More will be added after the upgrades are completed in mid 2016. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Class of 2015
Introducing the Nanaimo Christian School’s Class of 2015 It is difficult to find the right words with which to bless and commission a group of young men and women whom we’ve come to know, in many cases, over a decade of schooling here at NCS. We have watched many of them grow from gangly, awkward happy children, to worship team leaders, computer technicians, advocates for the disadvantaged -- Still, whether here for just one year, or since kindergarten, we have had the privilege of getting to know this diverse, funny, and talented group of individuals. As you look around at the pictures you may already know one, some, or many of them well, or, not at all; but we can assure you – each is worth getting to know. You will find them in your work place, in colleges and universities, at Bible schools- each and all discovering what it is to begin to really become an adult. So, should you come across any of these amazing young adults, please add your blessings to ours. The Class chose the following Bible verse as their own, and it speaks well of their confidence in the Lord’s interest in their lives: Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth – everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. NExT GENErATIoN feels the effects of residential schools. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN
While residential schools have cast a thick pall over aboriginal peoples and culture, it appears it is slowly lifting. Youths were forced away from their parents, not allowed to engage in their culture or language and subject to abuse, leading to negative effects among generations of First Nations, but contemporary youths in Nanaimo seem to be persevering. Ariel Gaudr y, a single mother of Cree and German descent, was affected by the vicious circle. Her paternal grandmother was in residential schools for 12 years, which affected her ability to parent her father. Gaudry said it “trickled down” to her. Gaudry admits to using marijuana, ecstasy and cocaine and said she acted out against her family. She also lost custody of her children. Gaudry said she felt systemic racism as a result of residential schools from government agencies. “It’s hard for older generations to look past those things and not see someone as a statistic and more as an individual,” said Gaudry. At the time, she didn’t understand she was facing addiction and considered her

Aboriginal Day can help us heal Nanaimo is planning a special decoration for National Aboriginal Day this Sunday (June 21) – the Snuneymuxw flag will be run up the flagpole outside city hall, where it will fly from then on. We hope that National Aboriginal Day is more than just decorative and has greater symbolism. It matters to us here and everywhere across our country. First Nations and non-First Nations people are friends and neighbours and those relationships should be among our most treasured. When we think about what National Aboriginal Day means, we should think about our connections to the land, the traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw, Stz’uminus and the Snaw-Naw-As people, and how our shared home ties intrinsically to our identity. It’s worth thinking about the progress we have made together and the progress we continue to make. Water sharing between the City of Nanaimo and the Snuneymuxw is one example; advancements in the Snaw-Naw-As treaty is another. Continually, at the Bulletin, we come across stories about aboriginal pioneers in government and newsmakers in arts, culture and sport and we realize that these are not First Nations stories, but our shared stories. Too often, though, there are reminders of why our relationship has been so stressed and strained over the years, and even broken in some ways. When we digest the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s findings, it’s comparatively easy to admit the truth, but a much greater task to reconcile. The past can be ugly, but we’d be blind to think racism hasn’t lingered in the years since. Sometimes prejudice can be ignored, but most of the time it should be questioned and addressed and redressed. On National Aboriginal Day, let’s recognize that we are the same and celebrate that we are different, and try to connect and heal.

In 2010, the B.C. government opened the $4.5-million Provincial Wildfire Co-ordination Centre in Kamloops, which serves as the province’s nerve centre for wildfire response and management. Air tanker bases in Penticton, Kamloops, Cranbrook, Castlegar and Williams Lake have all been upgraded since 2006 at a cost of more than $9 million. Additional upgrades were completed at bases in Cobble Hill, Vanderhoof, Fort Nelson, Parksville, Pemberton, Terrace, Puntzi and Revelstoke. I want to thank the public for its ongoing help in preventing wildfires. Anyone who spots a wildfire or unattended campfire should immediately call *5555 on a cellphone or 1-800-663-5555. It’s worth reminding everyone that all British Columbians need to do their part to prevent wildfires by learning about safe fire use and complying with all campfire and open burning regulations. After all, forest fire prevention is everyone’s responsibility. ◆ Steve Thomson is B.C.’s minister of forests, lands and natural resource operations.

Intolerance isn’t OK To the Editor,
The positive past and current Chinese contribution to the health and wealth of the Nanaimo and area community is well documented and their presence amongst us needs no defence. The board, staff and youth we serve at Nanaimo Youth Services Association apologize to anyone
who was hurt and harmed as a result of this act because in our collective experience it does not represent the majority of opinion of the local population. So to the racists amongst us, know that racism and intolerance is not OK. Not here, not now, not ever.

Citizens say good riddance to cell tower To the Editor,
tower was to be placed, and to Area A’s Alec McPherson, who spoke up for residents who would also have been in close range of the cell tower. In doing their research and providing alternative solutions, those residents, who spearheaded the action to protect our area have shown that citizens can determine the safety and development of their areas.

School board should switch to ward system To the Editor,
Re: School board considers reducing trustee numbers, June 16. In the school board chairman’s world (which doesn’t appear to go beyond the boundaries of Cedar) a reduction of services due to fewer trustees would result in a more concentrated board of one-issue, special-inter-
est trustees. A ward system with nine trustees, which has always been supported by everyone concerned, and a lower stipend best serves the entire district and forbids one neighbourhood group stacking the board, as we have now.

Cut down the broom, but leave the flowers
Get Shredded for Summer in 30 minutes or less!
To the Editor,
Every year I see city workers mowing down very beautiful as well as useful plants on a routine basis, and this careless act needs to stop. Along Mostar road there is a naturalized patch of arnica, nettle, chrysanthemum, and lathyrus. When I went to gather flowers for medicine the other day, I see that the city had a worker come out and cut down all the vegetation to only a few inches of stem. Why did this happen? it looked absolutely beautiful before, but now the flowers are gone, the ground became vulnerable to the sun’s heat, and now all that is left is an ugly brown patch of dried-up land. City landscapers should be better educated as to what they are doing. To put it bluntly, it seems as though they’re blindly going around town cutting vegetation down just because it’s their job. My intent is not to place blame or insult the hard-working city employees, but rather to suggest that instead of cutting down useful and beautiful plants, how about we put the workers and our tax dollars into something beneficial like eradicating invasive and destructive plants like the Scotch broom, English ivy, gorse, and knotweed, to name a few. As a community we need to be mindful of how we maintain our land. I believe we can clean up our vegetation the right way.

didn’t exist. “What the Internet has done is really lower the barrier to broadcasting,” Macedo said. “You can broadcast now right across the world and develop an audience with very limited infrastructure.” Macedo, who has been in the radio business for over two decades, says more and more online radio shows and podcasts are being created by aboriginals. “We’ve found that a lot of people with opinions are not just blogging and typing their comments and opinions,” Macedo said. “They are now recording podcasts and encouraging the exchange of ideas. They don’t have to have a 100,000-watt system with a 400-foot tower.”

work that is happening, too.” Manson says despite what is portrayed in mainstream media, First Nations languages, history and culture are as strong as ever. “The identity of language and communities remains strong and alive,” she said. “Many [aboriginals] … are going back into universities to get their voice and status back,” she said. Another way that aboriginals have been able to get their voice back is through access to the Internet and social media. Paul Macedo, a communications liaison for the Western Association of Aboriginal Broadcasting, an organization representing a number of aboriginal radio stations in Western Canada, says the Internet is creating opportunities in broadcasting that previously

few years ago Kenny Brault came up with an idea for a radio show. Brault, a longtime resident of Nanaimo, wanted to create a show that would highlight music by First Nations artists from across the region. “Originally I had one vision,” Brault said. “I was just going to be playing aboriginal music.” But what started out as a simple idea has become something far bigger. “Then I met Geraldine [Manson] and Natasha [Bob] and Buffi [David] and everything changed,” Brault said. After years of planning, Brault came up with the idea to create a radio show that would not only play music by aboriginal musicians, but would also educate the public on culture and history about Snuneymuxw, Stz’uminus and Snaw-Naw-As First Nations. “I lived here for 30 years and I knew nothing of a culture that has been here for thousands of years,” Brault said. In May of last year, Si’em’ nu Ts’ lhhwulmuhw radio show made its very first broadcast on CHLY 101.7 and continues to air on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays. Si’em’ nu Ts’ lhhwulmuhw, which translates to My Honoured Fellow Native People, is hosted by Brault along with Geraldine Manson, a full-time elder in residence at Vancouver Island University; Natasha Bob, a Nanaimo school district trustee and Buffi David, an educator in Ladysmith. “The show has tremendous opportunity for local artists and musicians to share their music of course, but it also has the potential to dispel the stereotypes around First Nations people,” Bob said. “The ability to connect people that formally were not connected before is very valuable and music and arts does that.” Si’em’ nu Ts’ lhhwulmuhw, which recently received a Neskie Award for Aboriginal Affairs and Culture Programming by the National Campus and Com-

Aboriginal musicians reaching new audiences From /10
Macedo is already seeing more and more tech-savvy musicians than ever before. “We find that the artists are much more savvy and they are much more aware of their craft.” Leanne Goose, recording artist from Inuvik, N.W.T., is one of the countless aboriginal artists who have taken to the Internet. “The internet has been a tremendous tool for me to be able to get my music out to the people, out to the masses and all around the world,”
she said. Goose, a 2014 Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award nominee and proud Inuvialuit and Dene woman, has been involved in music her whole life, thanks in large part to her father, who is also an active musician. Goose, who has had her music played on radio stations in Canada and around the world, says when her father started out, there was little interest in aboriginal music. “For a long time there wasn’t an indigenous music scene,” Goose explained.
“
For a long time there wasn’t an indigenous music scene.
“There weren’t very many artists who were out there. Trailblazers such as Buffy Sainte-Marie, Robbie Robertson ... those artists set the bar and continue to do so still to this day.”
With increased access to the Internet, social media and with radio shows like Si’em’ nu Ts’ lhhwulmuhw, the aboriginal music scene is reaching new heights. “Indigenous music is growing all around the world ... There are amazing artists doing this music and they are breaking past the borders of being an indigenous artist,” Goose said. “By accessing world markets for Canadian oil, we’ll enjoy increased tax dollars and years of employment.” - Deborah Cahill, President, Electrical Contractors Association of B.C.
Coastal access for Canadian oil means an increase of at least $5 per barrel. By getting full value for our oil, everyone will benefit. Workers will gain from the $5.4 billion project. Oil producers will earn more revenue for their product. And Government will collect more tax revenue from oil producers to spend on programs such as health care, education and other services that benefit all British Columbians. Plus, we can invest in new training programs and create new jobs for our youth.

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To the lovely ladies at Rock City Life Labs, especially Lynn (Kevin’s mom), who took such good care of my daughter, and Betta for returning my call so promptly. BEEF To the fast food outlet that doesn’t go with advertisements on TV promoting $5 meals. If it’s advertised, why don’t you honour it? BOUQUET To ambulance and fire crews that responded to my 911 call for my son who had a seizure. Many thanks for your professional, compassionate care. BEEF To all the drivers who don’t know the difference between night and day and blast their vehicle sound systems 24/7. BOUQUET To Nanaimo Yacht Club and the fish and game club for a great fishing adventure and barbecue for the blind. BEEF To the logging truck drivers on Nanaimo River Road. You ignore the posted speed limit and drive your fully loaded trucks down the middle of the road. You are the so-called professional drivers, so how about leading by example? BOUQUET To the great staff at Slegg Lumber. They are always willing to cut small pieces of wood for me. BEEF To the person who dropped a cigarette stub on the trail in Oliver Woods. What a fire hazard. BOUQUET To Sam’s Optical for an exceptional service. Thank you for doing such a good job with my glasses. BEEF In this unusually dry year, why is it that vegetable gardens suffer with water restrictions while people are still washing their cars and sprinkling sidewalks? This doesn’t make sense. BOUQUET To all who save used postage stamps for me. We were able to give $6,700 this year to cancer. Much appreciated.
BEEF To the irresponsible dog owners who feel it is OK to throw bags of their animal’s waste into people’s garbage cans, hedges, trees, driveways, etc. Stop burdening other citizens with your animal’s waste. BOUQUET To Mike and his amazing mechanics at Top-Lite auto service. Finally after many disappointing experiences I have found a company with integrity. BEEF To the pilot of the crotch rocket racing and swerving along Cedar Road – if you harass other drivers, expect the same treatment. I expect to hear that you received a Darwin Award in the next few years.
BEEF Why can police track down child pornographers, which is good, but are unable to track down fraudsters, pretending to be Canada Revenue Agency employees? BOUQUET To Yvonne Visser, RMT, for her incredible knowledge and ability and for all the volunteer work she does for Nanaimo. BEEF To the store for lacking customer service skills and knowledge. Own up when you’ve made an error instead of carelessly charging your customers for it. Won’t be returning anytime soon.
BOUQUET To Sandra who handed me a lucky $20 at the casino. I won, too.
BOUQUET To the staff from the Real Canadian Superstore for coming out to our McGirr Fun Fair and working our barbecue for us. Every year we are lucky to receive your support for our biggest school fundraising event.
BEEF To the drivers of open pickups who use the box as a garbage can that self empties onto the bypass every day. Clean up your act and your truck.
BEEF Please remove those eyesore statues above the library downtown. What an embarrassment to our beautiful area. It looks ridiculous.
BOUQUET To Rachel, manager at Original Joe’s, for providing exceptional customer service. BEEF To the ignorant person who keyed my friend’s car last Friday. Your racism has no place. And it was his birthday of all days. BOUQUET To the kind man Ken White who saw us with our hood up on the side of the river and spent his next half hour retrieving jumper cables and getting our car started. You restore my faith in humanity. BEEF To the pub. I tweeted a concern and they blocked me on Twitter. I guess if that’s the way you want to do business. #HowRude BOUQUET To Cedar Tire and David Thompson optometry clinic, especially Sara, for such courteous, friendly, kind services to a newcomer to Nanaimo. I will certainly be a client of both for a long time to come and recommend both.

BOUQUET To all who were part of and came out to our Ride To Conquer Cancer fundraiser. Thank you to Nanaimo Curling Centre, Milner Group, diabetes association, Linda and all the crafters who donated time, items and services. BOUQUET To Kyle at Blackapple Cellular. You went above and beyond to help me replace the screen on my phone. I will definitely be spreading the word about your wonderful customer service. BOUQUET To all the people on the trail who helped me get my dog home when he fell and couldn’t walk at Ammonite Falls, especially Phil at Fountain Tire who came back with an ATV and drove him back to our car. He is doing great. BOUQUET To the hardworking flag persons working on the many projects that are taking place this summer. Keep smiling and ignore the idiots. BOUQUET To Woodgrove Chrysler parts, Joe Fortier and crew, for such courteous, knowledgeable, kind, pleasant and quick parts and service provided to me over my Dodge Dakota’s lug nuts. BOUQUET to our Nanaimo school bus drivers keeping our kids safe every day, all year long. And you talk about distracted driving – wow, amazing safety record. BOUQUET To all the people who let us use their cellphone when we had a dead battery in the Costco parking lot. And thank you to the super nice couple who gave our battery a boost.

With a few keystrokes you can sample thousands of opinions, aoat in a sea of information. But as the volume increases, the accuracy and reliability of professional journalism is essential. Gathering and sorting the facts, weighing and interpreting events, and following the story from beginning to end is more important than ever.
By now you know. Adding body collagen directly reduces wrinkles, increases skin elasticity, and adds vital moisture to your skin. Indirectly, collagen thickens and strengthens your hair. You may also know that collagen production slows by 1% per year after the age of 21. Can you gain it back? Yes. But not by eating collagen. You see, collagen is a protein. When you ingest it, your body breaks it down, like any other protein, and uses it as food. When you want the real beauty benefits of collagen, you have to generate it.
BioSil™ generates collagen by activating the collagen producing cells in your body known as fibroblasts. It is clinically proven to increase collagen formation. In fact, in the clinical trial the women taking BioSil™ reduced wrinkles by 30%, increased skin elasticity by 89% and thickened and strengthened their hair by 13% compared to women not taking BioSil™. So when you want genuine visible results from collagen, generate it, don’t eat it. Experience the beautiful difference for yourself!

What is your favourite convertible of all time and why?
‘‘

That’s solidified with the fourth generation. Without getting too technical, dimensionally, it has changed. It’s actually smaller – the overhangs in the front and rear don’t hang as much – yet space is used even more efficiently inside. The driver sits lower, and so does the engine. I’m not a particularly tall individual, but my driving partner, an above average height male, didn’t find himself as cramped as he thought he would be. Even when we put the top up, claustrophobia was nowhere to be found. And speaking of top up driving, cabin noise is reduced significantly. Thanks to an aluminum front panel and insulating headliner, wind noise is cut by 40 per wwcent. With the top down, engineers have used their wizardry – or in this case, scientific knowhow – to keep cabin wind at bay and to allow conversations to be carried on without having to yell. And without too much hair being blown around. Side note: ladies, bring a hair tie just in case. Perhaps MX-5 admirers should also bring their sunglasses, because this front-engine, rear-wheel drive car is hot. Hot meaning sexy. And sexy in regards to its styling.
The MX-5 fully embraces the Kodo or “Soul of Motion” design language that inspires clean and crisp lines on new and future Mazda products. You won’t find hard edges on this car, but you will find a flowing form that is highly attractive at a standstill. While the looks of a car are essential, it’s not what the MX-5 relies on for its cult-like following. It’s the drive. The MX-5 is a car that can make you feel like a hero, or a champion without breaking too many road rules. It’s a car whose steering, suspension and transmission work so seamlessly together with the driver that it requires effort not to enjoy yourself. If the Laws of Attraction are yet again on my side, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 and I will cross paths again. Hopefully sooner rather than later. The 2016 Mazda MX-5 (the GX trim) has a starting MSRP of $31,900. The GS has an MSRP of $35,300 and the GT of $39,200. All three trims can be outfitted with the six-speed manual or the six-speed automatic for the same price.

Automaker keeps pets safe
6TH ANNUAL
Subaru is working with the Centre for Pet Safety to crash test pet-safety products. A recent survey revealed that 56 per cent of North American pet owners drive with their pets aboard and 20 per cent admitted to travelling with a pet in their lap. Subaru will help promote the safety of beloved four-legged companions by funding
the non-profit organization’s testing of pet crates and small carriers in crash situations. The study will include an investigation of crate connection options for pet owners who travel with their pets, as well as examine crate and carrier structural integrity, and gather data necessary to formulate testing and crate performance standards.

The Nanaimo Timbermen hope that a bye week can put an end to a tough stretch of losses. The city’s Western Lacrosse Association team has lost five straight and now gets a chance to regroup with a 12-day break between games. Coach Kaleb Toth said the bye week is a good thing, as it provides a chance for practice and rest, two things the T-men need. “You need to go over a lot of things in practices and when you play a lot of games in a row … they don’t really have time off,” he said. The coach was upset after the team’s most recent loss, a 10-7 setback against the Coquitlam Adanacs last Sunday, and said he would run the guys hard at the next practice. At the same time, he said, there needs to be balance. “I want to make it fun, but I’ve also got to stress the urgency, so we’ll have good, hard practices,” Toth said. “We’ll see how the pace is and we’ll see how they react and let’s go from there.” GAME ON … Nanaimo’s next game is June 27, when the league-leading New Westminster Salmonbellies visit Frank Crane Arena for a 7 p.m. faceoff. Admission to Timbermen home games is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students and free for kids 12 and under. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Sports hall of famers a deserving class As mentioned last week, the Nanaimo Sports Hall of Fame welcomed four new inductees in a recent ceremony at the Nanaimo Museum. Two of those were added in the athlete category, as former NHL player Wayne Bianchin and legendary Nanaimo Timbermen goaltender Fred Fulla were inducted. Also inducted, in the builder category was longtime soccer referee Dr. Ed Johnson. Following his arrival here in 1961, ‘Doc Johnson’ was Nanaimo’s top referee for many years. Highly respected for his fairness and knowledge of the game, he was also a mentor to countless other officials in the community.

The T-men take on the Langley Thunder this Saturday (June 20) at 5 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. The Thunder (4-9-2) are the team immediately ahead of the Timbermen (4-8-1) in the B.C. Diamonds girls win tournament The Nanaimo Diamonds invaded Delta and came away with more gold medals. The Diamonds’99 girls’ fastball team won a tournament at North Delta earlier this month, coming back to beat the South Delta Invaders in the final by an 8-7 score. The Diamonds were undefeated at the tourney and the pitching rotation of Ashley Skeldoch, Makenna O’Donnell and Jordyn East allowed only seven runs during the fourgame round robin. The team has won 13 tournament games in a row.
