As the use of e-cigarettes increases, particularly among teens, health officials express concerns about long-term effects

Chris LeSurf exhales after drawing on an e-cigarette. The devices are the subject of new government regulations and concerns among health authorities.

ourteen-year-old Colton picked up his first electronic cigarette at a corner store about a year ago. It was grape-flavoured. He was with four friends and each of them bought one to try. The young teen had never smoked before. He puffed on it for a few hours and then bought more. A couple of weeks later, he switched from disposables to the refillable type, and now carries it with him. Puffing on the device gives him “something to do,” he says, and the hundreds of flavours available keep him intrigued. Fifteen-year-old Quentin was under no pressure from friends when he tried e-cigarettes last year – he was already a smoker. Like Colton, Quentin liked the taste of the e-juices. As his use of e-cigarettes increased, his use of tobacco cigarettes lessened, and he eventually stopped. Now, he uses neither. “I stopped because I wanted to be healthy and stop wasting money,” Quentin explained. The use of e-cigarettes has increased in popularity in recent years, particularly among teens, and that has

Much is unknown about e-cigs New rules will ban vaping from schools and indoor public spaces From 1

not gone unnoticed by school administrators. In Abbotsford, the school district considers use of e-cigarettes the same as tobacco products. “In short, smoking and the use of tobacco products by students is not permitted on school grounds,” said Dave Stephen, manager of district communications. The provincial government also introduced legislation to regulate e-cigarettes under the Tobacco Control Act this year, but critics say the product shouldn’t be treated the same as traditional cigarettes. People mainly pick up e-cigarettes to either quit smoking or as a hobby, according to Chris LeSurf, manager of Vapology in Mission. LeSurf, 21, started smoking five years ago, and says he was able to quit after he tried e-cigarettes, also known as vaping (vapourizing). He has met others who kicked their decades-long habit with the help of e-cigarettes. Vaping is similar to smoking, except the user is inhaling vapour instead. A vape pen is made of a tank for the liquid, a mouthpiece, a coil to light up, and a rechargeable battery. Premium e-juices are mostly composed of four ingredients: propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, flavouring and nicotine. The idea is to begin with an e-juice that contains a high dose of

nicotine, then gradually decrease the amount of the addictive substance until it is absent. LeSurf is convinced vaping is not harmful and is much cleaner than smoking. “Vaping is wet, not a dry smoke, so it’s easier on your body,” he said, explaining the technology is similar to inhalers. “I feel better vaping. My lungs aren’t as heavy, my fingers don’t stink, and there are no butts on the ground.” Hobbyists build their own battery-operated pens by experimenting with different coils and wattage to get the best flavour out of an e-juice. It’s called cloud chasing. “It’s all personal preference,” said LeSurf, whose shop has shelves lined with flavours like fudge brownie, strawberry champagne, and white chocolate candy cane — his current favourite. There is also a sample bar for users. At Abbotsford’s Dragon Vapes on Essendene Avenue, people ranging in age trickle in and out throughout the day. Owners Gabriel Malt and Vyvy Ly opened the store last fall after seeing a local demand for e-cigarettes and related supplies. Visitors can vape and socialize. There’s a small bar, a set of couches, and plenty of standing room. Malt believes vaping is a better alternative to cigarettes, but main-

The new rules, which are not yet in effect, will prohibit the sale of e-cigarettes in public buildings and use on public and private school grounds, as well as indoor public spaces and workplaces. “Politicians are not educated about the industry,” said Malt, noting the vaping community regulates itself already by not serving anyone under 19. He agrees some rules are needed, such as not selling to minors, but other regulations, such as no retail displays or advertising where they

can be seen by youth, are going too far. “We’d have to tint our windows and close our display cases,” Malt said. “If we can’t vape in the store, you can’t find the flavour that works for you.” Malt is worried the new regulations will lead to taxation on the product and bans on certain flavours. He’s educating his customers on the new rules, and encourages local residents to contact their MLAs to voice opposition. Health officials support the government’s move to regulate e-cigarettes because the effects of the product

Residents urged to conserve water Residents of Abbotsford and Mission are being asked to restrict their water use and follow the current watering restrictions in anticipation of both communities facing a complete watering ban. The two municipalities share joint water utilities and infrastructure and both communities are currently at Stage 2 of their joint water shortage response plan, which allows residents in either community to sprinkle their lawns twice a week in the morning. Stage 2 was extended this year starting May 1 through September 30, due to the low snow pack, according to a city news release. Staff will be out in both communities enforcing the current watering restrictions to help with delaying a Stage 3 restriction activation. If the hot weather continues without rain, it is expected the Stage 3 restrictions will be implemented shortly. Stage 3 brings a complete ban on all lawn

sprinkling; no new lawn sprinkling permits will be issued; and non-re-circulating fountains will be prohibited. Residents will still be able to hand water flower and vegetable gardens. The concern is that if lake levels are drawn down too low and there is a dry winter, the communities will be starting off next spring with a lower-than-average water level in the lake. Abbotsford has turned off all of its outdoor fountains and spray parks will operate on motion sensors to help with conserving water. Residents are being asked for their help too by limiting non-essential watering as well as refraining from planting any new lawns or grass seed. For more information on water conservation log onto www.ourwatermatters.ca or call 604557-4423.

are still unknown. “There is remarkably little evidence either way in how potentially

damaging they are,” said Dr. Andrew Larder, a medical health officer with Fraser Health. “The e-cigarettes that are available are unregulated. There is no quality control on the construction of the devices and the content of the solutions used in them. That itself is of significant concern.” Larder also noted most of the products for sale are owned by tobacco companies, and consumers should be cautious about any claims made by the industry. “We don’t know what’s in the vapour, or its long- and shortterm effects,” said Larder, noting there is also scant evidence to show vaping is an effective cigarette cessation tool. The public health officer believes the devices should be regulated like tobacco products and there should be age restrictions on buying them.

“It’s illegal to sell nicotine solutions in Canada,” Larder points out, adding e-cigarettes containing nicotine should regulated by Health Canada and treated the same as nicotine gum. “The smoke that comes out is not as pristine as people like to think,” he explained. “The product is heated, similar to cigarette smoke.” He is concerned teens are being targeted by product manufacturers and worries it could be a gateway to cigarette use. “It renormalizes the behaviour of smoking… it normalizes the behaviour of puffing on a device in public places.” Until more is known about e-cigarettes, Larder said public health physicians are encouraging municipalities to change bylaws to treat e-cigarettes the same as tobacco cigarettes.

Corrections union takes stance Tyler Olsen

ABBOTSFORD NEWS

The union representing more than 1,000 federal corrections officers in the Fraser Valley is urging voters in the new riding of Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon not to support the Conservatives in the upcoming federal election. Gord Robertson, the president of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers (UCCO), said he expected between 90 and 100 members would be going door-to-door Tuesday afternoon in Mission and Agassiz, spreading the union’s message. Although the number of guards has remained steady in recent years, Robertson said budget cuts to the Correctional Service of Canada have made officers’ jobs more dangerous by reducing programs, stiffening sentences, and increasing the number of prisoners in federal institutions.

Robertson said Conservatives policies give offenders less hope of returning to society and increase the likelihood they’ll misbehave while incarcerated. The Fraser Valley is home to seven federal institutions that house around 2,000 prisoners and employ about 1,200 guards. They include Kent and Mountain Institutions in Agassiz; Matsqui Institution, Fraser Valley Institution, and Pacific Institution and Regional Treatment Centre in Abbotsford; Kwìkwèxwelhp Healing Village on Chehalis First Nation Land near Harrison Mills; and Mission Institution. While members are asking voters not to support the Conservatives, Robertson said they “aren’t telling people how to vote. “We’re educating our members and the public, too,” he said. Conservative candidate in the new riding, Liv Grewal, did not respond to a request for comment by press time.

Apply pressure to abolish Senate

The auditor-general’s report into spending in Canada’s Senate is very disturbing reading — not because of horrible things done over time to a group of people, as was the case with generations of First Nations children — but because of the ongoing air of indifference to taxpayers and accountable spending. No less than 30 senators, including recently retired senator Gerry St. Germain, were cited for improper expenditures. While some are taking issue with the A-G’s findings, the standards he believes should govern spending are pretty basic. A-G Michael Ferguson stated that senators should not be billing for personal trips. They should not be charging for taxis, meals and gifts that have nothing to do with official business. They should be keeping detailed and accurate records of all their spending, personal and Senate-related. Any claims for reimbursement should be submitted promptly, and posted online so that the taxpayers who ultimately pay the bills can see how their dollars are used. Senators should not have the last word on what is considered acceptable spending, or action following investigation of their spending. The reckless approach to using

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

taxpayers’ dollars by a significant number of senators, and the possibility that criminal charges may be laid against some of those who have been audited, has caused a shift in public opinion. Many people are now backing the NDP pledge to eliminate the Senate. There is certainly a better case for doing so than ever before. The Supreme Court has basically shut the door on Senate reform. Abolition also requires unanimity. However, provincial governments could be pressured if there was a national plebiscite question on whether to abolish the Senate, as part of October’s federal election. Many voices have called for such a vote, and it seems an appropriate way to move forward on this issue. Such a vote would not be binding in any way. However, if significant majorities in each province backed abolition, there would be significant pressure on both the incoming federal government and provincial governments to agree to abolition by amending the constitution. That may be the only answer to dealing with this mess.

Political factors in bridge improvements Frank Bucholtz Frankly Speaking On May 28, TransLink announced that the Pattullo Bridge would be closed for about a year-and-a-half, starting in mid-2016. The closure is not a 24-hour-a-day closure – but it’s very close to it. It will be down to one lane each way during the day and it will be closed every night and every weekend. Trucks will be banned completely. This closure is being done because TransLink wants to spend $100 million to shore up the decaying bridge. The repairs are expected to allow it to last a few more years until it is replaced by a new toll bridge, which will almost certainly be built, no matter how voters weigh in on an extra .05-per-cent sales tax. TransLink states it is a vital traffic artery and must be refurbished, even to stay open for a temporary period. It is expected to take eight years to replace it, says Fred

Cummings of TransLink. Its original life span was 50 years – it is now 28 years past that “best before” date. The timing of this announcement is curious. Replacing the bridge is part of the transportation plan that most mayors approved. The voting deadline for the sales tax proposal, to pay for that plan, was last Friday – the day after the announcement. Some people have suggested that the $100 million would be best put aside for the new bridge and the Pattullo should simply be closed. It sounds like a radical idea, but the alternative – a tolled Port Mann bridge – is in place and badly under-utilized. By 2016, all the approaches along the improved Highway 1 should finally be completed. The political problem, of course, is the tolls. That problem is a thorny one. Many people have switched to the Pattullo because of the tolls. There is no question that a large number of truckers use the Pattullo more frequently because of tolls. The Pattullo was promised as a free alternative by then-Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon when the Port Mann project was announced. That was almost 10 years

ago. Does the Pattullo need to stay in place simply to keep a political promise? It will ultimately be up to the BC Liberal government if it wants to reduce the tolls

Some people have suggested that the $100M be put aside for a new bridge on the Port Mann, and it is entirely possible that it is holding that plan in reserve, waiting for the next provincial election to draw a little closer. A reduction to $2 per crossing in time for the Pattullo closure would be popular, and would likely solve most of the problems caused by the Pattullo closure. It seems best to do things in this order: 1. Await the results of the transit referendum. They will be announced by the end of June. In the meantime, do not sign a con-

tract for Pattullo repair work. 2. Ask the province to reduce the Port Mann tolls, at least while the Pattullo is closed or restricted. 3. Make a decision on whether or not to close the Pattullo completely for repairs, or to simply demolish it. If demolition is the choice, get started on it as soon as the Highway 1 project is finished and a contract for a new bridge has been signed. 4. Build a new Pattullo Bridge. Keep the name, which is historic. The bridge is the only public structure in B.C. commemorating Premier T.D. Pattullo, who was premier for more than eight years during the depth of the Depression years. The original bridge was part of his plan to create more jobs at that desperate time. 5. Look more closely at a tolling and a road-pricing system throughout the region, so that the burden of building new infrastructure and maintaining what we have is spread evenly around the region to all highway and bridge users. Frank Bucholtz is the editor of The Langley Times.

NOTICE OF EXCLUSION APPLICATION REGARDING LAND IN THE AGRICULTURAL LAND RESERVE

Same dedication by city for park care?

I, Kelly Thomas Catherwood of 35043 Lougheed Hwy., Mission, BC•V2V 6T1 intend on making an application pursuant to Section 30(1) of the Agricultural land Commission Act to exclude from the Agricultural Land Reserve the following property which is legally described as, Lot24-except: part subdivided by Plan 38924 PL 476. Group 1, N.W. District 26272 and located at 35043 Lougheed Hwy., Mission, BC.

Over the last 25 years I have seen so many changes at Fraser River Heritage Park. This is all because of the staff and volunteers. When anyone visits the park the people working there are always ready to talk to you. I first think of the gardens. The rhododendrons have looked better every year. They moved some from a property and the plants have done well, with lots of care. Then there’s the garden plots with plants along the walk way and entrance. All the plants were donated from people in the community. The dahlias this year were all donated. Thank you to the Girl Guides who recently planted shrubs at the park. The rose garden looks fantastic this year. Thanks to those who look after it. The garden bed around the witch hazel tree by the Blackberry Cafe changes all the time. What a lot of time planning.

Then there are all the events that happen at the park. The Twilight Concert Series continues with so many volunteers. A big thank you to all the people who look after the lawns. I still marvel at those who cleared the blackberries on the hillside. They kept the fruit trees. All this was done without the District of Mission. Now the mayor and those at city hall want to run things. All the other parks can’t compare with FRHP. They have wanted Heritage Park for a long time. The district has a union and I wonder if things will change at the park. Are the people from city hall just as dedicated? Would they, working under a union, have cleared all the blackberries and brush from the hillside, overlooking the park? That’s something to think about. Lynne Diewert Mission

New sidewalks, lights the solution? Lights would be great I cannot understand why the entrance to our city is left in such an ugly state that is the “one way street” where we welcome visitors to the ghetto? It needs to be spruced up with lights and trees and planter boxes and paint and upgrades, that is embarrassing. First Avenue has charm but unfortunately is also as you leave our city we need to make Railway just as if not more charming! Nicole Sharma

webt@lk We don’t need to focus on the sidewalks and lighting. I highly doubt these are the things preventing people from shopping there. I think we should look at old downtown Abbotsford for inspiration. I drive through there to work and I’m always drawn to stop and shop! Several blocks in downtown Abbotsford are tidy, painted and clean yet still have the vintage character that old downtowns offer. It may seem materialistic but I

think if we spruced up the face/fronts of the entire downtown Mission core with paint and fresh signage, it would draw better attention to the stores that are there. If it feels quaint, clean and unique people would be drawn there. As I drive through downtown Mission, it feels a little dingy and I can’t see the names of most stores at a glance so nothing pops out and we cruise right through. A cohesive look of clean, yet unique shops would be much more attractive. Michelle Brown

for downtown First Avenue District to spend up to $15,000 on new drawings Tyler Olsen ABBOTSFORD NEWS

Downtown Mission could get a facelift that will see sidewalks widened, the road narrowed and new trees planted. Councillors approved a request Monday for up to $15,000 to create new design drawings for a revitalized downtown streetscape on First Avenue. The drawings are needed because previous designs were part of a plan to move the Lougheed Highway off of First Avenue that council shelved six months ago. Citing questions by potential investors, staff had asked council to provide some guidance about the future look of the downtown. The new drawings approved Monday will likely see each sidewalk re-paved and widened by a half-metre, possibly with a more appealing curb-side strip. The plan would require the removal of the trees currently in place and the planting of new trees. Mayor Randy Hawes questioned the narrowing of each lane by half a metre, but longrange planning manager Gina MacKay said the move may

10 The Mission Record Friday, June 19, 2015

The Bible tells us that our tongue is a small member of our body that can cause great damage. It compares it to a small fire that can set a forest ablaze. In the Bible, St. James tells us that if anyone can control their tongue, it proves that they have perfect control over themselves in every other way. He also tells us that sometimes our tongue praises our Heavenly Father, and sometimes it breaks out into curses against men who are made like God. Holding our tongue is not always an easy thing to do; however, we should try not to speak badly or spread rumors about others. Gossiping and spreading lies are not good and often can prove quite harmful and hurtful. When we know of someone who is constantly speaking badly of others, we must realize that they are probably also rumoring about us when we are not around. There is nothing that reflects a person’s character more than what they say and the way they speak about others. A good person is kind and truthful, and their talking is free of curse words; they can be trusted not to speak of the faults of others. God wants us to live in harmony with our friends and loved ones, and holding our tongue will help us to develop a Godly relationship.

YOU and the LAW FAMILY MEMBERS CAN CLAIM FOR WRONGFUL DEATH

When Jackie, a 31-year-old single mother, was killed instantly in a rear-end collision, she left behind a five-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy. What money was paid for her children to be looked after? If your spouse, parent or child dies as a result of the fault of another, BC’s Family Compensation Act allows you to claim compensation for the financial loss arising from that person’s death. compensation amount. In Jackie’s case, the possibility she would have become a CGA boosted her future earning power. But if you’re a surviving spouse, you might remarry and your financial loss eased, so your compensation may be reduced. Evidence typically has to be shown about the prospects of remarriage (e.g., that you’re in a new stable relationship and statistics about the possibilities of remarriage). The Act also allows for compensation for the loss of housekeeping and/or “handyman” services that the deceased had provided. Jackie’s daughter received $48,000 for loss of housekeeping and childcare services; her son got $41,000.

Our Vision

Fraser Valley Building Supplies (FVBS) has completed the asset purchase of the Rona store in Mission and as of June 27th the Corporate Rona store will close its doors permanently. FVBS retail operations will be rebranding from Ace to a 100% locally owned and operated Rona affiliate store.

FVBS plans to continue this legacy and, using Rona’s vast product selection and national buying power, provide a greater home improvement shopping experience for the Mission Community.

This exciting new venture will bring together the national retail strengths of Rona combined with the proven expertise of the FVBS contractor division, which remains unchanged. Here come the h judges! j d Here come the judges! Is your streetscape ready for evaluation? This week is a busy one for two Communities in Bloom programs and their participants: ``Downtown Blooms`` and ``Streetscapes.” Executive Director Jamie Hayes, is providing leadership to Downtown Blooms and Matthew Pusic of Vancity is overseeing Streetscapes. The Oxford dictionary provides us with a definition: A view or scene of streets, especially in a city.

Stewart

With a few financial incentives available to early DBA registrants, business owners are encouraged to compete in one of three categories: Tidiness/Appearance, Heritage and Floral Displays. DBA Executive Director Jamie Hayes has reported that several downtown businesses got into the blooming spirit even before the downtown program had become official. This year’s banners make excellent companions for the annual hanging baskets.

Streetscapes was launched three years ago and has developed effectively under Matthew`s watchful eye. Local judges will leave commendation certificates at 100 homes with attractive front yards.

All this activity is preparing Mission for its evaluation by national communities in bloom judges, who will be here through the weekend of July 25 to 27. The Communities in Bloom Society---and our entire city---is fortunate to have dedicated Parks staff that do the real work to beautify our parks, green spaces and public buildings. In addition, senior staff continue to provide guidance and encouragement to our Society`s board of directors. Together with individual citizens and volunteer groups such as Adopt-A-Block and Gorilla Gardeners, we are making a difference to the livability of our city.

Keep Blooming, Mission! Heather

Acts lining up for MFMF The 28th annual Mission Folk Music Festival (MFMF) is coming to Fraser River Heritage Park from July 24 to 26. Like festivals in the past, this year’s event features acts from around the world including: • Voices of Africa – King Sunny Ade, Black Umfolosi and Bongoziwe Mabandla; • New sounds from the Carpathian Mountains and Poland’s Volosi; • The musical legacy of Sylvia Tyson; • The Canadian-Irish venture of Pierre Schryer and Martin Nolan; • Scotland’s Ross Ainslie and Jarlath Henderson; • Basque trikitixa with Eneko Dorronsoro; • Music from the Camino de Santiago with Ialma and Quentin Dujardin; • Lots more still to be announced. One of the many groups the festival’s artistic director, Francis Edwards, is looking forward to is the Spanish group Ialma. Ialma consists of five young women from Galicia who have gradually created a repertoire of songs and dances borrowed from the base of their origins but adapted to the need for transmitting a new reality – that of women enmeshed in many different languages, cultures and artistic expressions. These five singers started in the Galician Cultural Centre in Brussels in order to accompany traditional dances. Ialma q u i ck ly attracted the attention of professionals and the Zoku label created by EMI Music Belgium. The greatly anticipated release of the first album was an act of liberation, a kind of transgression with respect to the traditional rules. Mission derby rolls on Saturday Entrants and volunteers still being accepted for annual competition Brandon Kostinuk ABBOTSFORD NEWS

The Mission Soapbox Derby – the oldest, still active derby – is just days away, and there are still some spaces to fill. “We could use some more racers and volunteers,” said volunteer co-ordinator Keith Hine. The 2015 Mission Soapbox Derby takes place Saturday, June 20. Currently, 34 racers have signed up but capacity is 65, said Hine. As well, 40 or so additional volunteers would be helpful to ensure the event runs as smoothly as possible. Races for boys and girls are available, ages 8-14. Adult racers (15+) can also participate.

Competitors register their entries for the Mission Soapbox Derby, which offers cars to those who don’t have their own. The derby is open to ers. Everyone receives anyone, and those runs. Races without a soapbox car three can select one of 18 are won by the fastest time. The quickest available. It will cost $30 for overall time for the young participants, day will receive a $500 and $50 for adult rac- bursary. In addition, a

$500 bursary will go to the fastest racer from Mission. Hine said they are also still awaiting dignitaries to volunteer to race. Tradition is to have the Abbotsford and Chilliwack mayors race one another for bragging rights, though that arrangement doesn’t appear likely this year, according to Hine. There will be martial arts demonstrations, and hot dog and pudding eating contests, along with other vendors supplying eats, treats and services. Sonic radio station, Mission Springs Brewing Company, Tim Hortons and many other sponsors have already extended their support for the derby.

To register or volunteer, contact Hine at 604-820-2048 or at volunteering@mission-

This is Gallo’s first published book, which she compiled from training she developed and shared in presentations across Canada, through her company Maria Gallo Presentations. Years before starting her corporate training business, Gallo worked as a professional actress in the B.C. film industry for over a decade. She never expected that her first award from Los Angeles would be as an author. For more information on Maria Gallo, her book and the award recognition, visit www. mariagallopresentations.com.

IT’S REALLY REALLY

The MX-5 fully embraces the Kodo or “Soul of Motion” design language that inspires clean and crisp lines on new and future Mazda products. You won’t find hard edges on this car, but you will find a flowing form that is highly attractive at a standstill. While the looks of a car are essential, it’s not what the MX-5 relies on for its cult-like following. It’s the drive. The MX-5 is a car that can make you feel like a hero, or a champion without breaking too many road rules. It’s a car whose steering, suspension and transmission work so seamlessly together with the driver that it requires effort not to enjoy yourself. If the Laws of Attraction are yet again on my side, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 and I will cross paths again. Hopefully sooner rather than later. The 2016 Mazda MX-5 (the GX trim) has a starting MSRP of $31,900. The GS has an MSRP of $35,300 and the GT of $39,200. All three trims can be outfitted with the six-speed manual or the six-speed automatic for the same price.

YOU RH

‘‘

That’s solidified with the fourth generation. Without getting too technical, dimensionally, it has changed. It’s actually smaller – the overhangs in the front and rear don’t hang as much – yet space is used even more efficiently inside. The driver sits lower, and so does the engine. I’m not a particularly tall individual, but my driving partner, an above average height male, didn’t find himself as cramped as he thought he would be. Even when we put the top up, claustrophobia was nowhere to be found. And speaking of top up driving, cabin noise is reduced significantly. Thanks to an aluminum front panel and insulating headliner, wind noise is cut by 40 per wwcent. With the top down, engineers have used their wizardry – or in this case, scientific knowhow – to keep cabin wind at bay and to allow conversations to be carried on without having to yell. And without too much hair being blown around. Side note: ladies, bring a hair tie just in case. Perhaps MX-5 admirers should also bring their sunglasses, because this front-engine, rear-wheel drive car is hot. Hot meaning sexy. And sexy in regards to its styling.

Our mom’s address became heaven 2 years ago and we still love her song. Life is like a mountain railroad, with an engineer that’s brave; We must make the successful, from the cradle to the grave; Watch the curves, the fills, the tunnels; never falter, never quail; Keep your hand upon the throttle, and your eye upon the rail. Bless’d Savior, Thou wilt guide us, Till we reach that blissful shore; Where the angels wait to join us In Thy praise forevermore. You will roll up grades of trial; you will cross the bridge of strife; See that Christ is your Conductor on this lightning train of life; Always mindful of obstruction, do your duty, never fail; Keep your hand upon the throttle, and your eye upon the rail. You will often find obstructions look for storms of wind and rain; On a fill, or curve, or trestle, they will almost ditch your train; Put your trust alone in Jesus; never falter, never fail; Keep your hand upon the throttle, and your eye upon the rail. As you roll across the trestle, spanning Jordan’s swelling tide, You behold the Union Depot into which your train will glide; There you’ll meet the Superintendent, God the Father, God the Son, With the hearty, joyous plaudit, “Weary pilgrim, welcome home!”

VLEEMING

John John Cameron, affectionately known to all as Uncle John, was born on February 15, 1933 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. He passed peacefully in his sleep on June 12, 2015 at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital. His youth was spent in Stirling where he met his life long friend Bill Kerr. John was a brilliant man with a knack for mathematic equations that led him into the field of Engineering. He became a Stress Engineer working in Stirling, Glasgow and Bristol. Bill urged John to follow him to Canada and upon immigrating in 1964 he started working with Boeing in Seattle, designing parts for planes. He then continued his career working for Marietta in New Orleans, designing parts for the space shuttles for NASA. His final working years were spent in Montreal, where he worked for Bombardier until his retirement in 1998. Moving back to Abbotsford to be with his adopted family, the Kerrs, he lived a peaceful and relaxing life with daily walks, playing his guitar, painting and sketching, reading and socializing with his friends at the Learning Plus Society. John will be missed by his sister Margie (Margaret) Leckie, Aberdeen, Scotland, and her children, Alexander, Marian, Steven, John & Patricia. His adopted family in Canada, Shielagh, George, Lisa, Moira, Ryan, Bill, Taylor, Kyla, Brooke & Rory. As well as, his longtime friend, Mila Auld, and her family, who he enjoyed visiting on Saltspring Island. No service by request, Uncle John would just appreciate that when you walk his favourite places you think of him. “Aonaibh ri chéile” When death’s dark stream I ferry o’er, A time that surely shall come; In Heaven itself, I’ll ask no more, Than just a Highland welcome. After patiently battling cancer for 2 years, Huibert passed away peacefully in his home in the early evening on June 7th, 2015. Whether we liked it or not, he always had a plan for everything in life and this was no exception. He always has and always will take care of us. Huibert is lovingly remembered by his “Sweetie,” Arlene; their 5 children: Brian, Kevin (Jackie), Mike (Cindy), Kyle (Tracy) and Alisha (Kevin) and his 13 precious grandchildren: Cory, Chelsea, Shania, Tyson, Cole, Nick, Nathan, Carson, Alison, Makenna, Chace, Bryce and Hayden. He is also survived by 6 siblings: Jack (Donna), Tina (Sid), Jean (Dick), John (Grace), Jan (Wendy), Rose (Herb) and many other loved ones. Huibert thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and he will be greatly missed. Although it is hard to say goodbye, we are feeling comforted by the wonderful memories that we have and in knowing that he is finally in a better place, without pain and suffering. A memorial service was held at Gateway Community Church on Friday, June 12th, 2015. As you rest now, from your almost 73 year journey, you should know that you have made your family proud. You were a great husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend. You will be forever in our hearts. Rest now, you’ve earned it.
