Town employs municipal intern BY TREENA MIELKE

Michael Fitzsimmons, recently employed by the Town of Rimbey as a municipal intern, is learning about the community from the ground up. Fitzsimmons, a graduate from the University of Saskatchewan with a degree in regional urban planning, began work for the town June 8. His workday may include being a liaison with developers, attending council meetings, studying documents related to Rimbey’s bylaws or helping out in the recreation or public works departments. Living and working in Rimbey is appealing for Fitzsimmons, who grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. “Growing up in a city like Saskatoon is quite a bit different,’ he said. “It’s nice to be able to walk to work.” Learning the ropes of municipal government in a small town is surprisingly busy, he said. “My first impression of such a small town is that it

is relaxed and there is not so much going on, but, really, it is quite busy. And Main Street is quite busy,” he added. Donna Tona, interim CAO for the Town of Rimbey said hiring Fitzsimmons has been possible through a provincial grant program. “We are able to give graduates (of municipal government related post secondary studies) a real world experience,” she said.

She said Alberta is the only province that offers the program. “There are 22 of them this year and they are an amazing group of interns.” She said she is pleased to have Fitzsimmons on board. “We interviewed candidates that wanted the small town experience. We are very fortunate to have him. Now we need to find a volunteer opportunity for him, as well.”

My housewifely pride escalated to dizzying heights last Sunday when I lifted the strawberry/rhubarb crumble pie out of my oven. As I set the still warm concoction carefully on the counter, it oozed juice and perfection equally and I was happy. Incredibly, the pie tasted as ridiculously delicious as it looked. Unfortunately, while I was in this state of domestic goddess bliss, loving the pie and myself with equal fervor, I greedily consumed two generous pieces. It wasn’t until later when my tummy protested that it was full, way too full, that I remembered to do the math. Calories in/calories out! I thought of the treadmill and how it would need to become my best friend

Red Deer, Alberta Published every Tuesday by PNG Prairie Newspaper Group in community with: Publisher: Mary Kemmis

it wasn’t because it was all manicured and pretty. In fact, it was quite the opposite. But the yard, which in reality was filled with quack grass, and hedged with overgrown carragana bushes, was a place where imagination lived and laughed and played for as long as the seasons of our childhood lasted. In that yard, ball fields and football fields were created, and great athletic feats were achieved, the like of which no one since has dared lay claim to. Our rhubarb was really

cool, too! I drove by that yard the other day. The rhubarb was gone and so, on that field of dreams, were the kids that played there so long ago. Me. My brothers. My sister. I drive on, responding to the ever beckoning call of adulthood and the present. But, even though shades of the past have slipped into the background where they belong, I still wanted some rhubarb. And I still wanted to create something fragrant and delicious. Luckily, my daughter has lots of rhubarb so a trip to the rhubarb patch meant

a visit with her as well. Sitting in cozy leather chairs in her newly created book room, with her little white mongrel mutt curled up on my lap like he belonged there, we sip coffee and chat companionably. I listened to my grandson softly strumming his guitar in the background. Outside the window, a misplaced wild rose bush blooms in accidental splendor and I feel a rush of unexpected joy. It’s good. And, really, surprisingly, it has nothing to do with the rhubarb. Or does it?

Liberals stand against law-abiding gun owners

MP Blaine Calkins

Production:

for a really long time if I was to make any attempt at balancing out the number of calories that are, no doubt, in two pieces of rhubarb, strawberry crumble pie. I felt sad. Full, but sad! I chastised myself, thinking I probably should not have used an old fashioned recipe that called for butter, sugar, white flour and sour cream in such generous quantities. I may be wrong, but I’m thinking none of those ingredients equate to any kind of weight loss. I’m not sure what it is about spring and rhubarb that stirs that domestic feeling in me, making me want to slip into my kitchen and concoct something, anything containing the magic ingredient of rhubarb. I mean I don’t even own a rhubarb patch. It’s sad, really. When I was a kid, we had rhubarb. Actually, I think everybody had rhubarb. However, I would venture to say, even though I really don’t have scientific proof, that we had the best rhubarb in town. True, the town I’m referring to was small, the ‘blink and you miss it’ kind of small, and we never won any prizes with our rhubarb or anything, but some things you just know. We also, actually, had the best yard in town. And

The party of the $1 billion wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry is at it again. Justin Trudeau’s gun control advisor, Liberal Senator Celine HervieuxPayette, has introduced a bill that would ban almost all guns and criminalize

most forms of hunting and sport shooting. “The Liberal Party has a long history of opposing Canada’s law-abiding firearms owners,” said Blaine Calkins, Member of Parliament for Wetaskiwin and Co-Chair of the Conservative Hunting and Angling Caucus. “This latest bill shows yet again that the Liberals do not respect Canada’s hunters and lawabiding firearms owners and do not understand our way of life.” On June 11, 2015, Senator Hervieux-Payette introduced Bill S-231. This Bill would irreparably harm Canadians who own and use firearms. It calls for a complete ban on firearms except for a select few approved by the government.

It requires that gun owners demonstrate a “need” to possess a firearm, and requires that anyone who is allowed to keep a firearm is subject to “periodic inspections.” Finally, Bill S-231 would completely repeal the Conservative Bill C-42: The Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act, which was tabled by our Conservative Government to undo the decade of abuse endured by Canadian gun owners under the Liberals. Only weeks ago this same Liberal Senator sent a fear-mongering email to Parliamentary employees, claiming that having armed police officers on Parliament Hill was a “mistake” because “the first victims of an attack will probably be police officers.”

“This bill could have serious consequences,” said Calkins. “For example, the Liberal’s firearm ban requires that, on the day the bill becomes law, all individuals who possess firearms bring them to a shooting range to be turned over to police. What would be the impact and cost of doing this?” The Liberal Party has a long history of opposing Canada’s hunters, farmers, and law-abiding firearms owners. Former Liberal Justice Minister Allan Rock claimed that he came to Ottawa with the goal of ensuring that only the police and military have firearms. Liberal leader Justin Trudeau continues to support the $1 billion failed Liberal long-gun registry,

pledging: “I voted to keep the firearms registry a few months ago and if we had a vote tomorrow I would vote once again to keep the longgun registry.” Meanwhile, New Democrat leader Thomas Mulcair has called for a return of the failed Liberal long-gun registry. He says that he would “bring in something that allows the police to track every gun in Canada.” “Law abiding gun owners, hunters and farmers have worked too hard, for too long to let the NDP and Liberals bring back a long gun registry. I will always stand up for law abiding Canadians and victims first, by going after only those who use guns to commit crimes,” said Calkins.

Bentley drama option presents musical Annie Jr. BY JUNE NORVILA

What a production! What a lot of great acting! Wonderful choreography and costuming! The Bentley school Jr. High Drama Class Option students put on two performances of the musical “Annie Jr.” at the school on June 11 — one in the afternoon and one in the evening. It was hard not to get emotionally involved with the characters when there were so many remarkable actors.

“I’m very happy they’re so keen to get involved!”

Marla Kolybaba, the fine arts academy/director/ teacher, was director and looked after the sets, music, and costumes. She said she is very excited to see the interest growing. “I’ve grown this option (the junior high drama option) from 17 (participants) the first year, to 24 the next, and now this year to 36. I’m very happy they’re so keen to get involved!” Many students took on two different roles. The main characters were Annie (the 11 year old orphan) played by Kelsey Vig, Oliver Warbuck (the billionaire) played by Riley Leclerc, Grace Farell (Warbuck’s secretary) played by Zoe Lorenz, and Agatha Hannigan (orphanage matron) played by Emma Nickerson. There were two actors who played the part of Rooster Hannigan (bother of Agatha Hannigan). Austin Siebold was Rooster in the afternoon, and Faith Alexdandre in the evening. continued on page 15

Bentley school stages successful fashion show BY JUNE NORVILA

It was a sold out crowd of around 200 at the Fashion Night Out. For over two months those in the Junior High Fashion Option had been working tirelessly to prepare for the Bentley School’s 1st Annual Fashion Night Out that took place on May 22 in the darkened high school gymnasium. Fashions ranged from very casual sporting and beachwear, to fashions for school, and even some longer gowns. Stores who were so cooperative and whose fashions were modeled included Mandy’s Fashion and Footwear from Rimbey, Queen Bea from Bentley, Nomads from Sylvan Lake, Twisted Label from Ponoka, South Hill Design Jewelry by Airyn Street from Ponoka, and United Cycle from Edmonton. Marvel College from Red Deer gave the girl models complimentary hairstyles. Mary Kay consultants did the model’s makeup. About 45 grades 6-9 school students from the Bentley school’s fashion option were involved. Models included about 40 boys and girls, and seven staff members. There were too many models to mention by name here. Spearheading the whole idea were the Fashion Option teachers Courtney MacMillan and Marla Kolybaba. When the idea of putting on a fashion show was put to the junior high fashion option, students they loved the idea but didn’t realize the amount of work and planning it would take to pull it off. MacMillan said, “I had this crazy idea about putting on a fashion show as our fashion options major project. The students bought in right away. It was an awesome experience for all of them which I know they will never forget!” “I think the biggest thing the students will take away from this fashion show is the realization of how much work it takes to host an event like this, and of course I’m sure they will have a much better appreciation for similar events.” The show’s masters of ceremonies for the evening were option teacher Courtney MacMillan dressed in

Twisted Label attire and student Lina Matheson sporting Mandy’s Fashion and Footwear clothing. Appetizers were prepared by Lora Walker, the one who does the hot lunch program for the Bentley School. The lighting, music, sound and setup were by Jesse Halladay and Tanner Hogensen. Behind the scenes were Harley Whitfield, Breanne Bickford, and Ashley Cumming and front door greeters were Quinn Millar and Gracie Whitfield. Six young gentlemen students who acted as servers for the event were Brody Beveridge, Andrew Williams, Joey Goyette, Matthew Robie, Landon Coulter, and Lee Coulter. They planned, prepped, and served the mocktails. MacMillan orches-

trated the whole event and Kolybaba’s main job was to organize the decorations, drinks, and help with the servers. Exquisite looking programs and posters were designed by school clerk Mrs. Jacquie Ruud. Both option teachers agreed it all wouldn’t have happened without the support of so many of the staff and of the cooperation of the option students themselves. “It was a great success and all that were able to attend the evening had a great night out! The students and staff helped pull off an unforgettable night! We are definitely looking forward to next year's show!” MacMillan said. All proceeds raised went back towards the junior high fashion option at the school.

In the days of the pioneers when horses were the primary mode of transportation and the Town of Rimbey existed only on the peripheral edge of development, three brothers came to the area to begin a new life. These men, Ben, Jim and Sam Rimbey played an integral role in creating the urban centre which was to bear their name. As it turns out, this little nugget of history was of particular interest to Scott Cummings, a man living in Redding, California. After learning about his family lineage, he discovered his family roots were linked to these long ago pioneers. “My mom was Marjorie Rimbey,” he said. “Her dad was Carol Rimbey and his great, great uncle was Jacob. Jacob was father to those three boys.” Although Scott Cummings had never even been to Canada, much less Rimbey, he was fascinated with the story. This year he and his wife Cathi decided to make the trip to the town his ancestors had helped build. “We just decided to go and check out Rimbey, Canada,” he said. “And here we are.” The couple rolled into town last Tuesday, checking in at the Best Western Hotel. Their first impression was that of a small town, much smaller than they had originally anticipated. “We thought the population was around 6,000,” he said. The couple have toured the Beatty House, Pas Ka Poo Park and the cemetery and checked out a few eateries. On Wednesday they stopped by the Rimbey Review office. They said they were

impressed with the friendliness that has been shown them, the cleanliness of the town, and the industry in the area. “There is a great deal of friendliness,” said Cathi. “Everyone has treated us so very well.” They also like the fact people don’t seem to be in a rush and are willing to stop and chat. On their way to Rimbey, the Cummings traveled through Banff National

Park. They loved the mountains and the glaciers. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything as fantastic as the Canadian Rockies,” said Scott. “And the glaciers are majestic.” The change from Fahrenheit to Celsius and from miles to kilometers has presented somewhat of a challenge for the California couple. They also noted the cost of a Budweiser Beer is quite a bit higher. But they found food

prices comparable and they noted the meals they were served were delicious. Overall, their stay in Rimbey was enjoyable and full of unexpected acts of kindness and delightful moments to be remembered. They especially enjoyed Pas Ka Poo Park. “The buildings were awesome and they each had their own smell that belonged to days gone by,” said Scott.

A shot of Epinephrine, a hospital visit and a memorable ride

Jonah Kondro Dad has a saying: “It’s not a ride unless something breaks.” He is absolutely right. If a motorcycle rider simply disappears for a few days and returns only able to talk about the traffic, the cost of motel rooms, or the poor Wi-Fi along the way, that rider hasnt really been on a ride. Dad first enlightened me with his motorcycle philosophy after my Yamaha Virago’s throttle cable separated. The two of us were riding home to Grande Prairie through Hinton (this was years ago). Dad and I spent a couple of hours in a Canadian Tire parking lot going in and out buying repair supplies. After some aggravating roadside patchwork, my old Virago was fixed up enough to get home. I’ve had my own accounts of scary scenarios while on separate solo motorcycle rides: a minor break down in the Mohave Desert on route 66, traveling through Hades to get to Reno, and severe reactions to bee stings (resulting in hospitalization). I took some time off in June to embark on a little motorcycle trip. Not long after my days were booked, some long awaited Ford training sprang up and fell the same days I was to leave. In this situation I was a glass-is-half-full kind of guy. I simply moved my days off to the next week and decided that I would ride my motorcycle all week in Calgary during my training — then I would take off to Montana for a ride. It was cold leaving Calgary after my course was completed. But the sun finally graced my leathers for a while before head-

ing west towards Pincher Creek. At this point I was close to needing fuel again; I didn’t think I had enough gasoline in the tank to make it all the way into Pincher. I was packing a jerry can with a few liters of premium and was planning on doing a road side fuel up. The western sky was turning into a black mass of hatred and darkness. I turned to look towards the north where some sunlight still blessed the fields. In that moment something

had struck the left side of my neck. I did my best to shake off the inconvenience. The dark clouds ahead absorbed most of my attention. Moments later at the bottom of a hill, I found an approach to pull off and use some fuel from my jerry can. All my layers of clothing had shifted during my dismount and my neck stung with pain. The rain still wasn’t falling and I removed all my exterior clothing down to my black shirt. With the help of a side

mirror on my motorcycle, I removed a stinger from just under my neck tattoo. The heavy black clouds were almost on top of me; I quickly redressed and resecured the jerry can. From the left swing arm bag I removed a canister that held an Epipen. The locking cap was removed. I was already feeling high, my Ray Bans looked to the sky, and I thrust the plunger into my right thigh. The needle was held in for seven seconds; epinephrine was injected into my blood stream

through my leather pants. I ascended through the gears and the rains broke loose from the clouds. In a matter of moments I felt like Captain Ahab in a squall — what a marvelous day. I could feel the epinephrine erupting its way through my veins. Thundering howls burst from deep within my lungs. The pathways to Valhalla are unforgiving. In the Pincher Creek hospital I was immediately attached to all kinds of mysterious medical in-

struments. Questions were directed from the nurses and doctor. I swallowed some pills and was injected with steroids. My body vibrated like a V-8 engine at 7000 rpm with a loose timing chain. Nothing happened. There was no severe reaction like before in B.C. My body shaking eventually leveled out. I stayed in the hospital for a couple of hours under observation. Before the doctor released me, he noted that I did the right thing.

Council chambers off limits for local library functions BY TREENA MIELKE

A request by the Rimbey Library Board for continued access to the council chambers for adult programming has been given the thumbs down by council. At a recent meeting, council denied the request. Coun. Matt Jaycox said councillors are not comfortable with opening up the council chambers for such public functions. “The council chambers contains secure documents,” he said. The library’s adult programming includes such activities as book club and coffee club. Librarian Jean Keetch said previously the library staff used a meeting

room located south of council chambers for book club. Council chambers was also used for meetings and programming in the past. book club and these activities. However, the meeting room adjacent to the council chambers has been converted to a storage room. The library is cramped for space, said Keetch. “We don’t have enough space and we have difficulty accommodating everyone,” she said. “We would like to be able to access council chambers (especially the galley at the front of the room) for our adult programming as well as a private space when the library manager needs to have a sensitive meeting,” said Ro-

wena Aitken, chairman of the library’s board of directors. “Our library staff and board of directors are working hard to serve our community with a well-run library.” Keetch said she is considering suggesting to the book club to meet on a different night. However, that option would mean an increase in staffing costs. “That would mean the library will be open one more night which will result in increased staffing costs, but the needs of the patrons must come first.” “We have not come up with a solution,” she added. “And we need to have the data base that is available in the town office building for any library function.”

The classical duo KEVLEX, consisting of violinist Alexis and classical guitarist Kevin will be performing at the Beatty House Friday evening, June 25. Photo submitted

Los Angeles classical duo to perform in Rimbey If you like classical music, we have a treat for you. The Beatty Heritage House Society is honoured to be hosting Los Angeles-based “KevLex”, a music duo featuring Kevin on classical guitar and Alexis on violin. Alexis graduated from the prestigious Pepperdine University in 2011. She has been playing the violin since the age of eight, and currently performs with the Santa Monica Symphony. Kevin has been playing guitar for nineteen years. Growing up in Winfield he began his training with local musician, Edwin Erickson; then continued with widely known guitarist, Ben Tobiasson. While he was attending a music camp in Montana, Kevin’s playing caught the ear of Christopher Parkening, one of the world’s preeminent virtuosos of the classical guitar. He invited Kevin to study with him at Pepperdine University, which Kevin did for three years. The repertoire of KevLex is drawn from ancient and folk traditional music, the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical periods, and modern music. The selections are transcribed by the talented duo for their instruments. Alexis and Kevin have toured Western United States, Canada, and Scandinavia with their music. We are fortunate indeed to have these talented musicians appear in Rimbey. They will perform at the Beatty House on Thursday, June 25, beginning at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available at Stationery Stories and Sounds and, seats permitting, at the door. See the posters around town, or call Florence at 403 843-3443 for more information.

Reader questions grass pick up Dear Editor, In the spring of 2014 the lilac tree in my backyard fell victim to a storm in which heavy wet snow snapped its branches. the town of Rimbey (sorry, guys, some were bigger than allowed, but thanks for taking them anyway) and placed them in my back lane. I knew the town truck would come and pick them up. I only have a small car that is big enough for me, the missus and the dog and when we go shopping, three packs of toilet paper. Much has been made

of those poor schlemiels in this town that still do not want to leave their grass clippings on their lawns. I mow my grass and leave it there. No problem. But the prunings of my trees? Really, am I the only one in this town who would have trouble getting them to the recycle depot on my own? Council's caving in to some residents' desire for grass pick-up services is hollow, does not do anything for me and has an additional cost that is nothing more than a cash grab. After all, that pick up, until this year, was included in the fees we already were paying.

Miss Robyn Brown was stage manager and makeup. Mr. Joe Brown was vocal coach for Oliver Warbucks. Two different full sets were incorporated. There was the orphanage, and the Warbuck’s living room, plus the stage with curtains drawn was utilized. Jason Hazlett provided some of the items for the sets including a 1932 radio and a couch for the orphanage. Some ladies had volunteered their sewing talents. Many helped out in so many ways. At the conclusion, after Kolybaba had

Many drama students also helped backstage, or with the sound system and music, lighting, set building and props, and more. Talented choreographer was teacher Miss Courtney MacMillan. Grade 12 student Vivien Schunk was a very great asset as the director’s assistant and did the girls’ hairstyles.

American Goldfinch common bird to visit feeders BY HAROLD FISHER SPECIAL TO RIMBEY REVIEW

A brilliant flash of yellow and a cheery ‘perchick-a-pea’ — these are the trademarks of the American Goldfinch. We used to call them wild canaries, and everyone would know what we were talking about. Then sometime during the 60’s or 70’s the dawn of backyard birding arose and it became more fashionable to use the correct name for wild things. Actually, the ‘wild canary’ is not a canary at all, but a member of the finch family and aligns itself with the redpolls, siskins and grosbeaks. During the summer months, the American Goldfinch is one of the more common birds to visit our feeders, and is attracted to a variety of seeds including niger and sunflowers seeds. The male is particularly handsome, decked out in a brilliant yellow body and accented with a black cap and black wings. It is not easily confused with any other summer visitor to the feeder and the flash of color as it suddenly flies away is unforgettable. The female’s coloration is more subdued than the male’s, the brownish-olive colors blending into the foliage, and is well suited to the nesting activities of summer. But the flash of yellow in the wings as it flies away and the bobbing undulating flight identifies it as a goldfinch. American Goldfinches breed throughout most of the settled areas of Canada, preferring a mixture of woodland, farms and field edges up to the edge of the boreal forest. They avoid the open prairie and the mountains, but can be found in wooded coulees and valleys across the province and in the Cypress Hills. Occasionally a few goldfinches will winter in southern Alberta, but most leave for warmer southern climates as far south as Mexico. The American Goldfinch is one of the last of

the spring migrants to arrive in Alberta, usually not appearing in numbers until late May or June. It is a late nester, usually building its nest when the thistle

down is flying in late June or early July. The nest is a compact cup of fine vegetation lined with thistle or cattail down placed in the crotch of a tree usually at a

height of 1 to 4 m. The 4-6 pale blue eggs hatch in 1214 days and the young are on the wing in less than 2 weeks after hatching. continued on page 23

RIMBEY REVIEW 23

Tuesday, June 23, 2015

Birder’s delight continued from page 17 The fledglings are dependent on the adults for another 3 weeks after leaving the nest. During late summer small family groups of goldfinches, now all wearing the drab female coloration are attracted to suburban gardens to pick at ripening heads of sunflowers and other seed heads as they mature. By the end of September most birds will have begun their southward migration, but a few will linger on into the autumn frosts to feast on an abundant seed crop. The American Goldfinch is almost exclusively a seed-eater. It consumes very little insect matter and, unlike most passer-

ines, feeds its young a diet of partly digested seed material. It is well adapted to obtaining all its protein requirements from a diet of seeds. This lack of insect protein in the nestling diet may explain why the Brown-headed Cowbird, a nest parasite of many passerines, fails to survive in goldfinch nests. Cowbird eggs hatch successfully, but their growth is retarded and almost all die before they can leave the nest.
