Three teens overdose on ‘date rape’ drug Trio intentionally consumed GHB; one critical in hospital Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

Three teens were taken to hospital in serious condition after taking a “date rape” drug, gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), on Sunday night in Abbotsford. Const. Ian MacDonald said Abbotsford Police were called at about 6:45 p.m. by a

fourth person, who apparently had not taken the drug, after the three teens began vomiting and convulsing. The group had taken GHB about 45 minutes prior to the call, MacDonald said. They were all in Mill Lake Park at the time. When police and BC Ambulance arrived, they found that a 19-year-old man and

15-year-old girl were unresponsive and a 17-year-old girl was semi-conscious. The three were taken to hospital, and MacDonald said that at points through the night, the man was in critical condition. He said all three are expected to survive, but the extent of the damage that the drugs Continued on A7

Police seek driver who hit three pedestrians Collision at Dahlstrom Place and George Ferguson Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

Police are still working to identify the driver of a van that struck three pedestrians early Friday morning. The incident took place just after 3 a.m. at Dahlstrom Place and George Ferguson Way, just west of Gladwin Road. Const. Ian MacDonald said the driver was travelling east on George Ferguson Way when he or she crossed the centre line and ran into two women and one man – ranging in age from 36 to 57 – who were walking westbound and crossing at

Dahlstrom Place. One of the women was airlifted to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the other two were taken to hospital by ground ambulance. The vehicle involved, a white 1997 Plymouth Voyager, was found abandoned on George Ferguson Way just east of Gladwin Road. The van had two punctured tires on its driver’s side, and the windshield was smashed. MacDonald would not say whether the van was stolen or whether it is believed that the registered owner was driving it at the time of the col-

Pride flag to fly in Abbotsford Some unhappy about council decision Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

Raising the rainbow pride flag in July is about acceptance, says Mayor Henry Braun, following some opposition to council’s decision last week. A message to council from Les Bohna requested the city fly the rainbow flag from July 13 to 20 to coincide with a pride celebration that will run July 17 to 19 at Trethewey House. The events are organized by Out in the Valley, a society that organizes social events for the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) community, and the Fraser Valley Youth Society, a non-profit charitable organization that provides services for LGBTQ+ and allied youth. Council voted unanimously on Monday to approve the flag-raising. Coun. Brenda Falk was absent from the meeting. Abbotsford resident Richard Peachey, under the title of Citizens for a Morally Strong Abbotsford, expressed his opposition in a letter, asking for residents who also opposed the flag-raising to contact mayor and council. Abbotsford has no policy on what flags are flown at city hall, said Braun, and in the past other flags have been raised. “In the absence of a policy, I personally thought it would be seen as very discriminatory (to not raise the flag) because we’ve

The original request to council also asked for a crosswalk to be painted in rainbow colours, which was not approved, but was sent to staff for consideration. Braun said he knew the decision would be controversial for some sectors of the

community, but said “we need to reach out to a community that feels very discriminated against.” Braun said he generally doesn’t vote on issues at council unless there is a tie. However, when the mayor abstains from raising a hand, it is counted as voting in the affirmative – therefore he voted in favour of the flag-raising. He said had he been a councillor, he likely would have still voted in support. “I know some people are not going to be happy with this, but I don’t view this as endorsing anything … this is about accepting people…” Peachey asked in his letter whether city council should be “offering official support to views or practices that many in our community regard as sexual immorality.” Braun said he doesn’t agree the flag-raising supports sexual immorality. He said council reached out a hand to part of the community and said, “You are a part of us.” He said before this issue came up, he was scheduled to speak at the pride celebration and is committed to doing so. “I want to be inclusive of all people in this community.” Peachey has now requested to make a delegation to council about the issue. Braun said that after that presentation, he will “address this head-on as the mayor” and will open the discussion to council.

Car accident victim passes Two-car crash on June 16

A young man who was airlifted following a two-car crash in Abbotsford on June 16 died from his injuries on Monday afternoon. The 21-year-old, whose identity has not been released, passed away in hospital. The crash took place just after 11 p.m. on Lower Sumas Mountain Road. Police, fire and ambulance crews arrived at the scene to find one of

the cars on its side, wrapped around a telephone pole. The two occupants had to be extricated from the vehicle. The 21-year-old was airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital. The other victim was taken by ground ambulance to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Police have not released any further details.

Content of street drugs uncertain From A1

caused is unknown at this point. GHB is a depressant that is sold as a white powder or as capsules. It can also be sold as a clear, colourless liquid that is odourless and tasteless, allowing it to be slipped into drinks without detection. Its sedative effects have been used to prevent victims from resisting sexual assault, hence its reference as a “date rape drug. According to Health Canada, it’s easy to take too much GHB because the amount that produces the desired or pleasurable effects is close to the amount that can cause an overdose.

ONLINE abbynews.com

MacDonald said police hear about its intentional use from “time to time, although it is not as common as pot or ecstasy. He said the concern with manufactured street drugs is there’s no guarantee that the product being sold is in its purest form. “GHB and other street drugs have unknown ingredients, additives and cutting agents in them and, therefore, they can have unknown effects on your body. These effects can include serious injury or death, he said. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225 or text abbypd (222973).

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I WEDNESDAY, June 24, 2015

Looking at the country from the other shore Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views I’ve just spent two weeks viewing events from the opposite side of Canada, in and around St. John’s Newfoundland. It’s the same country, but you wouldn’t know it sometimes. Here on the West Coast, “kayaktivists” paddled around a Shell offshore oil drilling platform being serviced at Seattle, striking poses of resistance for the media from their petroleum-based watercraft. Meanwhile at Bull Arm outside St. John’s, work continues on a massive “gravity-based structure” that will soon be drilling into the Hebron oilfield 350 km offshore. It will have living quarters and drill rig above and a tank with capacity for 1.2 million barrels of crude below. Offshore oil has turned St. John’s into a boomtown. With one industrial park near-

ing capacity on the edge of town, a second is under construction. St. John’s Airport is buzzing with flights back and forth to Edmonton and Fort McMurray, and crew helicopters shuttling back and forth from offshore oil rigs. Tourism is picking up, with a new cross-Canada ad campaign and WestJet starting service to Dublin and London. A foreign supplier won a contract for tankers to bring oil ashore. With no media-connected environmental groups to steer the subject to far-fetched disaster scenarios, debate in the Newfoundland and Labrador legislature turned to concerns about maintaining local employment. Outside the city, parallels with B.C. become evident. Tiny towns struggle to hang on as young people choose opportunity over isolation, and the only expansion is at church graveyards. While cities struggle with high housing and recreational property costs, homes in remote areas are going for a song. Up north in Labrador, a hydroelectric dam at Muskrat Falls is under construction. Its $8 billion estimated price tag is in the same range as BC Hydro’s Site C project on the

Peace River, which will part a sea of protesters and lawyers and move ahead this summer. Nalcor Energy, Newfoundland’s electrical utility, is dipping into contingencies in an effort to keep it on time and on budget. Here on the Left Coast, enviros and the Green Party rail against hydro as well as oil and gas, and of course you can’t even men-

tion nuclear. Climate activism proceeds in a logical vacuum in these parts, as it often does in Europe. Prime Minister Stephen Harper signed on to a farcical “carbon free in 85 years” pledge at the G7 meeting in Germany. But hey, it’s an election year, not a time for serious discus-

sions. Imperial Oil’s Kearl oilsands mine at Fort McMurray has started production from its $9 billion second phase, with the help of many Newfoundlanders. Production continues to grow, heavy oil prices have surged with paving season, and large-scale liquefied natural gas export plans begin to take shape in B.C. With the legislature about to be recalled to endorse the Petronas-led LNG export project, Premier Christy Clark has assembled a climate action team with representatives from industry, First Nations, local governments and a couple of professional protesters. They have an absurdly short deadline to recommend changes to B.C.’s token carbon tax, as gasoline consumption returns to pre-tax levels despite continued high pump prices. The debate about new energy supplies has a more serious tone in Newfoundland. The last elected premier, Kathy Dunderdale, lost her job in the wake of winter power blackouts. On June 15, council voted to raise the Rainbow Pride flag at city hall to coincide with the Fraser Valley celebrations that will be held in July. Many in Abbotsford may wonder why the LGBTQ community asks for its flag to fly and its events to involve parades through public spaces. They wonder why our symbols and our pride must be “flaunted” for all to see. Until very recently, LGBTQ people were largely denied mere existence. Although times have changed in Canada, and we now have rights that broadly accept us as equal persons, we still struggle. Many of us still hide away from society in fear of losing our jobs, losing our family and friends, or losing our dignity. Holding a loved one’s hand, a goodbye kiss or even a gentle hug can be an experience filled with anxiety and fear. In the news, we still hear of homophobic beatings and even murders. Our youth are especially fragile. A 2013 Statistics Canada survey found that 33 per cent of lesbian, gay and bisexual youth have attempted suicide, compared to seven per cent of youth in general. For trans youth, that figure rises to 47 per cent! Also, LGBTQ youth represent between 25-50 per cent of the youth homeless population. The main reason our youth suffer is they lack a supportive environment of people who affirm, accept and love them unconditionally. Instead, they are bombarded with antiquated tropes about “immoral sexual lifestyles” and are treated as sinful, perverted deviants. When the Rainbow Pride flag rises above city hall in July, LGBTQ youth along with other community members will know that our government believes in an Abbotsford that is inclusive and welcoming. The flag isn’t about sex, nor about lifestyle. The Rainbow Pride flag is about belonging. Patrick Oystryk, Abbotsford

The province is considering stiffer fines and possibly vehicle impoundments or prohibitions to get distracted drivers to put down their cellphones and devices. Motorists caught using a hand-held device face $167 fines and – since last fall – three driver penalty points. A four-week online consultation period is open until July 16 to gather public opinion on whether tougher measures are needed. Comments are being collected at engage. gov.bc.ca/distracteddriving. Besides potential vehicle impoundments or driver prohibitions, the site asks if texting drivers should be punished more severely, and possibly new drivers and repeat offenders as well.

Abbotsford Police Department’s (APD) crime reduction unit covertly followed the vehicle as it travelled from Abbotsford through Mission and on to Maple Ridge. Near 100 Avenue in Maple Ridge, the officers lost sight of the vehicle, but they then noticed the driver of the Suzuki riding a bicycle in the area. Police attempted to stop the man, but he fled, first on the bike and eventually on foot. The officers were able to catch up to him, and a struggle ensued in which the man pulled out a knife.

The incident began just after 4 p.m. An Abbotsford Police officer did a check of the licence plate on a 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara in the area of Trafalgar and Horn Streets and discovered it had been stolen from Langley two days prior. A man was in the driver’s seat, with a female passenger, and a bicycle could be seen in the rear cargo area. Members of the

School board recognizes three groups Community Matters Awards presented The Abbotsford Rotary Club, Abbotsford Food Bank and the Kiwanis Clubs of Abbotsford and Clearbrook have been recognized with the inaugural Community Matters Awards. The awards were presented June 16 by the Abbotsford Board of Education at a regular public meeting. The board established the award earlier this year to recognize community partners who have made a significant contribution to the lives of students in the Abbotsford school district. The award is intended to acknowledge an organization that has exceeded its service mandate to children. The Rotary Club and Food Bank were recognized for the Starfish Pack program (formerly Blessings in a Backpack), which provides weekly delivery of meals and snacks to more than 260 students in 22 schools in Abbotsford. The backpacks provide meals over the weekend for families who might otherwise go without. The Kiwanis Clubs of Clearbrook and Abbotsford were recognized for their many years of service with students in the areas of literacy development and leadership, including Key Clubs at five secondary schools; Builders Clubs at two Continued on A14

QUESTION: Is it true you can achieve a soft face lift with the use of cosmetic fillers? Will the results look natural? - Jane, Aldergrove

was a huge success!

ANSWER:

THANK YOU

As we age the bones of the face actually soften back as does the fat in the fat pockets of the face. At the same time our skin expands due to the effects of natural aging. In other words the table cloth is now too big for the table. With the Soft Lift we combine the smoothing effect of Botox with the filling effect of Juvederm fillers. The result is a natural looking lift with no downtime, done in just one treatment!

School board chair Cindy Schafer said the awards are a way for the board to express appreciation for those involved in service to students. “Community involvement in the Abbotsford school district has been a long and valued tradition, she said. “Numerous organizations, such as this year’s recipients, contribute resources and countless hours of volunteer service to enable our students to achieve success in school.

A variety of events will mark the Fraser Valley Pride Celebration, which runs July 17 to 19 at Trethewey House (2313 Ware St.) This year’s events are organized by Out in the Valley, a society that organizes social events for the LGTBQ+ community, and the Fraser Valley Youth Society, a non-profit charitable organization that provides LGBTQ+ and allied youth with opportunities through workshops, programs and community connections. Friday will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with a youth dance, presented by FVYS, followed by an outdoor movie presented by the University of the Fraser Valley’s Pride Collective. On Saturday, a pride festival will start at 11 a.m. with entertainment, food vendors and community booths. At 6 p.m., a dinner and drag show fundraiser will be held, followed by a dance party presented by Out in the Valley. Tickets to the drag show and dance are available at www.brownpapertickets.com. On Sunday there will be a queer art exhibit at 6 p.m. followed by another outdoor movie. All profits from the events will go to FVYS. Out in the Valley has made FVYS their charity of choice, and are partnered with the goal of eventually expanding the society’s programs to include an emergency shelter for LGBTQ+ youth. Family history seminar Philip Sherwood leads event Aspiring family historians who want to learn how to interview family members and friends can kick-start the process by attending a three-hour seminar on June 27, from 9 a.m to noon at the MSA Museum (Trethewey House) in Abbotsford. Participants will identify ethical and legal concerns and effective questioning techniques as well as learn how to prepare for an interview and tackle tough topics. Also included is a discussion on audio recording and transcribing technology. The seminar is co-sponsored by the MSA Museum Society and local writer / editor Philip Sherwood and costs $30. “We hear of many people who are interested in compiling their family histories, but don’t know how to go about it,” said Kelly Railton, executive director of the MSA Museum Society. Free parking is available for the

event at the museum at 2313 Ware Street. Seating is limited, and advance registration is mandatory. For more information and to register and receive a course outline, contact the museum at 604-853-0313 or by email at info@msamuseum.ca, or visit www.msamuseum.ca. Leading the June 27 seminar is Abbotsford writer/editor/personal historian Philip Sherwood, whose company lifewriters.ca specializes in helping individuals, families, organisations, and communities tell and preserve their stories in book form. The seminar is one of many services that the MSA Museum offers to memoirists, lifewriters, and family historians. These include free information sessions, free one-on-one consultations, a list of do-it-yourself resources, and several fee-based services.

The Milkle-Down Effect. It starts on the farm but it doesn’t end there. Consuming Canadian dairy is a healthy choice in more ways than one. When you buy Canadian dairy products, the money you spend stays right here in Canada and the economic benefits trickle down to all Canadians. We call it the Milkle-Down Effect. Registration is now open for innovative and exhilarating summer art classes for kids at The Reach (32388 Veterans Way). “Our art lab is all about getting to know artmaking in a new way,” said The Reach cultural programs assistant Julie Epp, who will lead the classes. Children aged five to 12 years will develop skills in mediums such as painting and drawing, printmaking, sculpture, paper cutting and street art. They will have fun and will walk away with a more comprehensive understanding of the process of art creation. Class sizes are limited, which will allow children to receive better instruction and create more detailed projects. Each lab class will stimulate their imagination with a different artistic style or technique, and with room for children to develop the styles into their own individual works of art. In one of the biggest soccer games ever played on Canadian soil (or turf), Abbotsford’s Sophie Schmidt and her teammates on Canada’s National Women’s Team downed Switzerland 1-0 Sunday at BC Place to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. A record crowd of 53,855 fans had to hold their breath for nearly 52 minutes before Josee Belanger scored to give Canada a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Belanger’s goal – a cool finish off of a neat pass by Christine Sinclair – released a burst of nervous energy among the massive crowd, but several Swiss attacks had the Canadian fans holding their collective breaths. But keeper Erin McLeod – who was named the game’s best player – came up big when it counted and made a key save in the 77th minute on a closerange Swiss shot to preserve the lead. Continued on A25

Despite picking up a hip injury late in Canada’s final group stage, Schmidt played the full 90 minutes. She was one of several players who needed a pain-killing injection before taking the field. “These girls are warriors. We’ll tape her up and put them out there,” Canada coach John Herdman said. Schmidt, who is a key cog in Canada’s midfield and takes all the team’s set pieces, didn’t look out of place, making several key tackles and passes. In the game’s final moments, it was Schmidt who spent much of the time with the ball, eating up the clock as Switzerland tried to find an equalizer. “At the times when we needed Sophie, she stepped up,” Herdman said. In the days leading up to the game, Schmidt wasn’t always sure she would be able to play, she said after the game. The pain eased a little heading into the weekend, but that doesn’t mean her hip felt good “It was painful, but once the game got going, it was out of mind.” Clutching a small bouqet of flowers in the media area outside of the players’ dressing room, Schmidt was all smiles after the game. “It’s Father’s Day,” she said, noting that her whole family was in the crowd. The atmosphere, she said, “gave me goosebumps.” Canada now moves on to the quarterfinals and will play England, who beat Norway Monday. That game takes place Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in BC Place. The Canadians beat the English 1-0 in a warm-up match before the start of the World Cup.

Columbia Bible College’s (CBC) new men’s basketball head coach Matthew Boulton has his work cut out for him. To the best of his knowledge — he’s only days into the job — just four players, maybe five, will be returning to the lineup. The Bearcats are holding I.D. camps June 27-28. Email mbball@columbiabc.edu for more details. “The hard thing is recruiting,” he says. Boulton said it can be a challengeto find players to match the academic programs at CBC, whose courses range from biblical studies to outdoor leadership and caregiving — not the typical runof-the-mill programs. Seven others have committed to trying out for the Bearcats for next year, a group which includes Abbotsford hopefuls Greg and Mitch Krahn out of Mennonite Educational Institute as well as a couple of national junior college players from the U.S. Boulton says the plan is to have a full roster come the first week of August, leaving a couple months to prepare for the start of the Pacwest season in late October.

Juulsen eyed by NHL clubs Brandon KOSTINUK Abbotsford News

Noah Juulsen’s NHL dreams are nearly a reality. The 6’1”, 180-pound Everett Silvertips defenceman enters this week’s NHL Entry Draft with the potential to go in the first round — a possibility the 18-year-old Yale grad says he never envisioned. After attending the NHL draft skills assessment and meeting with 26 teams earlier this month, Noah Juulsen returned to Abbotsford for

Exceeding expectations

GET READY FOR SUMMER!

Silvertips head coach Kevin Constantine described Juulsen as a strong, two-way defender, capable of playing a tough, physical game with the ability to move up in the play to get in on the offensive rush. “There are a lot of good things about him. How much he enjoys the nature of hockey. That he’s a very dedicated kid who wants to learn, plays physical … [and] has a heavy shot,” Constantine told The News. “These things all combined and you get a draftable defenceman who can work the power play.” Juulsen showed a knack for exceeding expectations, even before his climb up the central scouting rankings. At the age of 16, he secured a spot on the Silvertips’ roster and slotted into a top-four defensive pairing as a rookie, something his coach said is “rare in the WHL.” The Abbotsford product says he idolizes Vancouver defenceman Kevin Bieksa. International Scouting Services placed Juulsen within their top-30, while TSN director of scouting Craig Button ranked Juulsen at No. 41 on his list of NHL prospects entering this year’s draft. Both lists are not limited to North American skaters.

his high school graduation at Yale to retain a bit of normalcy before potentially stepping into the limelight of professional hockey following the draft, which runs June 26 and 27 in Sunrise, Fla., the home of the Florida Panthers. NHL’s director of central scouting Dan Marr stated in the lead-up to the draft that Juulsen is a legitimate first-round contender. Juulsen said, “I didn’t really see myself in the position I am now. I thought I’d go somewhere in the fourth or fifth round.” He was ranked 38th among North American skaters in the NHL Central Scouting midterm rankings. He moved up 16 spots to 22 by the time the final rankings rolled in, due to his improving play and offensive output throughout the season. After registering just 10 points in his rookie season last year, the Yale Hockey Academy product put up 52 points, including nine goals in 68 games this season to help his club top the Western Conference’s U.S. Division. “It was a really good season this year. We had a really good group of guys,” Juulsen said

THIS IS WHAT WE CAN DO... To complete the HVAC service a

technician will clean out the air conditioning lines, evaporator and ventilator and then kill any bacteria mould or fungi. Then deodorize the entire A/C system and the vehicles interior. Finally, after a complete inspection for leaks and wear, the technician will measure and replenish the oil in the compressor. The air inside your vehicle will be much cleaner and 4 to 5 degrees cooler, thanks to increased efficiency.
