Books about West Kootenay/Boundary families have taken two of the three top prizes at the BC Genealogical Society’s annual awards. The Deanshaven Story: How to Float a Grand Piano and Other Necessities of Invention, by Pauline Butling, placed second, while My Hometown, My Furusato: Family History of Greenwood-Midway by Chuck Tasaka placed third. The Deanshaven Story chronicles the adventures of entrepreneur R.T. Deane, who settled on Kootenay Lake near Riondel with his first wife Dorothy in 1912 and second wife Ilonka in 1946. Between serving as a naval officer in two world wars, Deane started a land development company, a floating hotel, a mine and a sawmill. Woven into the narrative of his sometimes hare-brained schemes are old photos, family anecdotes, archival documents, and the author’s personal reflections.

Pauline Butling, Deane’s granddaughter, was born in Kaslo and began her life at Deanshaven. Her family also lived at nearby Walkers Landing, the present site of Yasodhara Ashram before moving to Nelson in 1942. She and husband Fred Wah maintain a home at Deanshaven, which they share with their extended family. My Hometown, My Furusato is a collection of over 40 family stories from Greenwood and Midway, including those of Japanese Canadians interned in the Boundary during World War II. “[It] is about the early pioneers who settled in the Boundary country to find a better life,” Tasaka told the Boundary Creek Times as the book was launched last year. “Some came to work in the smelter and others to establishes their own homestead and ranch. Through all the peaks and valleys of a small town relying on primary industries, people formed a special bond and love for their community.” Tasaka, who was born in Midway and grew up in Greenwood, is now a retired teacher in Nanaimo but has been involved

With an increasing focus on the health and fitness of Canadian youth, the annual Kids Triathlon in Trail has been growing in popularity each year. This year’s event, designed to be fun and competitive, is set for July 4 at the Trail Aquatic Centre. Trail Times file photos

Trail triathlon gets kids moving jim bailey West Kootenay Advertiser

Trail Parks and Recreation is encouraging youngsters to get outdoors and get active by signing up for its annual Kids Triathlon on July 4 at the Trail Aquatic Centre. The event began as an initiative by Gerick Cycle and Sports, Teck’s Wellness and Learning Centre, and Trail Parks and Rec to promote fitness at a young age and is now in its sixth year. ParticipAction Canada recently gave Canadian kids a D-minus for overall physical activity, reporting that 70 per cent of three-to-four year olds met the guidelines of at least 180 minutes of daily physical activity but that of older children dropped substantially. Only seven per cent of fiveto 11-year-olds and five per cent of 12-to 17-year-olds met recommended guidelines of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity daily. Walking quickly, skating and biking are examples of moderate activities, while running, basketball and soccer are considered vigorous activities. The Kids Triathlon is designed not only to get children engaged in a physical activity but interested in pursuing and maintaining that activity as a sport or hobby as they grow older. The event is both fun and

competitive, keeping the distances manageable to ensure the younger kids enjoy the race, and, at the same time, challenge the older ones. “It’s actually quite challenging,” says Manaigre. “I would say each group, they are pushing hard to get to the finish line. They are really earning their medal, especially when you get into the seven and up ages. Some struggle but it’s not extremely difficult. You want to make it a bit challenging so they feel they’ve accomplished something.” Over 80 competitors ages 4-12 participated in last year’s race, and organizers are hoping for even a better turnout in the upcoming event. The kids compete in separate age groups: four year olds, five and six year olds, seven and eight year olds, nine and 10 year olds, and 11 and 12 year olds with numerous parents and grandparents on hand to cheer them on and many volunteers to help out. “The volunteers actually make it happen,” said Manaigre, whose volunteer list from past triathlons includes help from Teck, Gerick’s, the Trail Ambassador program, and the Trail Smoke Eaters. The youngest of the competitors swims 25 metres (one length of the pool), bikes for just over a third of a kilometre, and

You’ll find plenty of ways to get the kids out of the house and connecting with nature with our new outdoor spring toys from Melissa & Doug. From bubbles to butterfly nets,

we’ve got it!

runs for half a kilometre. The distances increase incrementally up to the 11 and 12 year olds who swim 100 metres, bike 3.4 kilometres, and run for 1.5 km. Each group starts in the pool, followed by cycling on a set course through East Trail, and completing the event with a run to the finish line at Butler Park. The day will end with a celebration event for all participants and spectators. In addition to improved bone health and reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, there are added cognitive and psychosocial benefits to being outdoors, noted Mark Tremblay, the ParticipAction report card’s chief scientific officer. “You need to make decisions. You explore. There’s more creativity. You’re not being driven by a digital screen. We’ve lost the calibration of what’s associated with healthy childhood development and we need to recalibrate society.” The fee to register is $38 and this includes entry, race package, t-shirt, swim cap, finish line prize, and the celebration lunch. Deadline to register is June 30, but early registration is encouraged. Call Trail Parks and Recreation at 368-6484, or the Aquatic Centre at 364-0888 to register. Each child must have an adult supervisor present during the event to assist in the transition area and on the course.

A vintage love affair Have you ever wondered if you should have been born in a different era? Do you like old furniture and can’t bear to throw something away just because it’s the wrong colour or doesn’t quite fit in with the styles of today? Do you like to create something useful out of something that most people would consider throwing away? Are you one of those people who loves garage sales and picks up stuff left on the boulevard with a “Free” sign on it? Then the Kootenay Chicks Vintage Faire is definitely for you!

The second annual Kootenay Chicks Vintage Faire is being held on Saturday July 4 and Sunday, July 5 at St. Joseph School, 523 Mill St., in Nelson. The gates open at 9 a.m. both days and close at 4 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Whether you’re into antiques, vintage finds, repurposed designs, furniture or a bit of farmhouse and country, you won’t want to miss this great event. Hosted by Birch n’ Burlap, the Kootenay Chicks Vintage Faire is currently the Kootenay’s largest

vintage inspired two-day event in the Kootenays all under one big roof. This year’s event is being held in a bigger venue to accommodate all the vendors — both indoors and outdoors as well some great food vendors with tasty treats for you to enjoy while you shop. If last year is any indication of the interest in vintage finds, this year will be even better. So come on down and lose yourself in another place and time at the Kootenay Chicks Vintage Faire!

Castlegar’s mystery solved, Kinnaird’s riddle endures the Columbia River from Kinnaird on the cable ferry installed by the Society, they come to what was in the early days of the mining development of this locality called Waterloo …” Kinnaird was on the CPR timetable the following year. However, a post office didn’t open until 1945, by which time Kinnaird was becoming a bedroom community of both Trail and Castlegar (the post office closed in 1973). Kinnaird was incorporated as a village in 1948, re-incorporated as a town in 1967, and amalgamated with Castlegar in 1974, whereupon a contest was held to name the new city. Not only was Castlegar the landslide favourite with 825 votes, Kinnaird wasn’t even the runner-up: it finished sixth with a mere 11 votes, behind Selkirk, Castleaird, Castlegar-Kinnaird, and Twin Rivers. Despite the seeming indifference of residents, Kinnaird was nevertheless well entrenched and its name is perpetuated thanks to a bridge, elementary school, two churches, a park, and a community hall — although the area is often called South Castlegar. Today Kinnaird is recognized by the BC Geographic Names database as an “urban community.” While the dividing line between Kinnaird and Castlegar is no longer apparent, it used

One hundred and first in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Earlier in this series, we looked at how the origin of Castlegar’s name was definitively established after a century of uncertainty. However, the jury’s still out on Kinnaird, originally known as West Waterloo, and first mentioned in the Trail Creek News of April 16, 1897: “West Waterloo … is doing some improvement.” (East Waterloo, better known as simply Waterloo, is today’s lower Ootischenia; we’ll get to it much later in this series.) West Waterloo appeared as a stop on the Columbia and Western Railway’s schedule as of November 1897. The earliest mention of Kinnaird yet discovered is in William Blakemore’s Report of Royal Commission on Matters Relating to the Sect of Doukhobors in the Province of British Columbia, dated Dec. 21, 1912: “The Doukhobor Inquiry commissioner, with his secretary and photographer and others who accompanied him yesterday on a visit to the Doukhobor settlements on the banks of the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers between Kinnaird and Brilliant, spent a day of unique and varied interest. to be where the highway crosses the railway tracks near Safeway. So what of the name’s origin? It comes from the Scottish Gaelic An Ceann Аrd, meaning “high headland,” but how and when it was applied to a West Kootenay whistlestop isn’t clear. The British Columbia Centennial Directory, published in 1967, claimed “Around 1904 the CPR … put in a box car station at the old Waterloo trail crossing and called it Kinnaird station, in honor of Lord Kinnaird, who was a shareholder in the CPR.” (Roger Burrows, in Railway Mileposts, Vol. II, suggests the name was changed to prevent confusion with Waterloo, Ont.) Arthur Fitzgerald Kinnaird, 11th Lord Kinnaird of Inchture and third Baron Kinnaird of Rossie (1847-1923), is mainly remembered as a leading soccer player; there’s little evidence he or his forbears held stock in the CPR. Just the same, when the Town of Kinnaird received its coat of arms in 1969, it bore markings from Baron Kinnaird’s Arms of Scotland. There are two villages named Kinnaird in Scotland, plus Kinnaird Head, which projects into the North Sea on Scotland’s east coast. Another theory is that our Kinnaird is named after an early resident. We’ll look more closely at this next week and reveal a new candidate for the community’s namesake.

Grizzly bears sighted at Nancy Greene

West Kootenay Advertiser

Grizzly bears have been on the prowl around Nancy Greene Provincial Park and while a sighting may seem rare, Sharon Wieder with Wildsafe BC, says the bears are becoming more and more common in the area. Sightings have been coming in more and more frequently, because one of the area’s momma bears has picked up the habit of foraging for food along the highway near the park, bringing her cubs with her. “The grizzlies are very habitual,” said Wieder. “That sow may have grown up in this area, and now has her own cubs. The things they learn from their mother, they will keep and pass on to their own cubs.” Grizzly bears have a fierce reputation for deadly encounters with humans out in the wild, and in recreation areas. Wieder says there is plenty Nancy Greene Provincial Park users can do to prevent an avoidable incident. “At this point, we are just warning people to steer clear,” she said,

adding that one sighting in the area on May 30, saw two grizzlies venturing closer to humans than usual. “If there are people around and making noise, then generally the grizzlies aren’t going to come near. But, if it was as hot as it has been, they do love to swim.” To avoid a deadly grizzly confrontation, Wieder says one of the key things is not to go anywhere in the wild alone, or even in pairs and to keep food locked up when out at the park. “The best thing is to be in groups. Research has shown that nobody in a group of three or more has ever been attacked by a grizzly,” she said. “Grizzlies also have noses that are like 100 times better than a dog. They are going to smell your lunch from three miles away.” Anyone who sees a grizzly, or any kind of bear, can report the sighting to Wildsafe BC and it will then be plotted on the Wildlife Alert Reporting Program (WARP). “It is good to report it just so people know where the bears are and to be extra careful around there,” she said. “We can get the message out with things like Facebook and on the WARP map.” For more information on local wildlife sightings, visit www.wildsafebc.com/warp.

Government stops Jumbo, company might sue BC environment minister Mary Polak decided last week that the Jumbo Glacier Resort in and real estate development in the Purcell Mountains cannot proceed. In response, Tom Oberti of Glacier Resorts Ltd says one of the company’s options will be go to court. “I am not convinced that the physical activity undertaken meets the threshold of a substantially started project,” Polak said. On October 12, 2014, the environmental certificate that gave Glacier Resorts Ltd. the green light to start building expired. It was not renewable unless the project was “substantially started,” meaning actual physical construction had taken place. Polak decided some road and bridge construction and a concrete pad for a day lodge, all of which were done in September and October

Nelson Star File photo

leading up the deadline, were not enough. She made it clear that her decision was about the missed deadline, not about the merits of the project as a whole. Now the company can only proceed if it applies for a new environmental certificate, a potentially costly and time-consuming process. The decision leaves the existence of the municipality of Jumbo Glacier up in the air. Created by the province, with no residents and an appointed mayor and council, the municipality exists at the whim of the government and Polak said she does not know what will become of it. Oberti said that options other than court could include scaling back the project so that it would not require an environmental assessment.

Feeney homicide still under investigation liz bevan West Kootenay Advertiser

Firms shortlisted for Nelson pool reno Three firms have now been shortlisted to provide construction management services on the delayed renovation to the Nelson aquatic centre. The Regional District of Central Kootenay says the firms will submit proposals by the end of the month and the successful proponent will be picked next month. The pool will remain open until then. “All the construction management companies that expressed interest are very qualified and the shortlisted firms have the most experience in aquatic centre projects,” said Joe Chirico, community services manager for the regional district. “Whoever we hire, our collective focus

is ensuring that the aquatic centre continues to serve the community well for at least the next 30 years.” The recreation commission moved from a lump-sum tender process to a construction management model in May after all project bids in the first go-round came in well over budget. The project has a budget of slightly less than $5 million, with most of that to come through borrowing. The work is expected to take about eight months and will see repairs to mechanical systems, electrical panels and equipment, plus a new sauna, pool deck, tiles, and waterproofing membranes.

It has been just over a year, but RCMP officers investigating the 2014 homicide of Tom Feeney say it isn’t a cold case. Constable Tim Russell from the RCMP Kelowna Major Crimes Office says officers and investigators aren’t giving up on finding who is responsible for the death of Feeney in Rossland on June 5, 2014. “The case is still in the investigative state,” he said. “Active investigation is being followedup on a daily basis. There are still a number of investigators that are continuing to follow-up on active leads.” There were numerous items stolen from the 75-year-old’s home in what police have said was a robbery that ended in homicide. None of the items have been recovered yet, but Rus-

sell says they haven’t stopped looking. “The items that had initially been listed on the media conference in the first week (after Feeney was found), none of the items that we are seeking from the property have been recovered, so we are still looking for those,” he said. Although it has been a year since Feeney was discovered, Russell says there is no such thing as a cold case in the RCMP. As long as there is a lead, investigators will follow. “This unit, specifically, has investigations that are in the public’s mind, considered historical,” he explained. “There are instances where those do produce new leads and we are able to follow up and bring them to a successful conclusion years later.”

Boundary Museum completes solar power project The Boundary Museum and Interpretive Centre announced last spring that keeping energy costs down was a priority and a solar panel project was the best alternative. That’s now a reality — FortisBC recently flipped the switch to allow excess power to go back into their electrical grid. The museum had built its new multi-purpose building for exhibitions last summer and waited word on funding for the solar system — word came last April when the museum society found out they would receive $59,000 from the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDBK) from the federal gas tax funding. The museum (located at the Fructova Heritage Site) made arrangements to install 26 metres of solar panels on the nearby hillside and to fit the building to be completely powered

by solar power. The museum society board estimated the cost to run the building will end up being 0.37¢/kilowatt, amortized over 21 years, as opposed to 9¢/kilowatt that FortisBC would charge.
In celebration, a grand opening will be held at the museum’s Reservoir Road facility on Saturday, June 27 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. A solar workshop at 10 a.m. in the new exhibition building which houses the solar operation system will kick off the day. For further information, please contact the Boundary Museum & Interpretive Centre at 250-442-3737 or email boundarymuse@shaw. ca. Admission is by donation to assist future development and restoration projects.

A new commemorative was hung in the Trail Memorial Centre Tuesday afternoon as a salute to the city from the Canadian National Sledge Hockey Team. Trail hosted a training camp in October 2012 before the team went on to win gold at the IPC world championship in April 2013 with Trail coach Mike Mondin (left). Team Canada defeated its long time nemesis, the United States, 1-0 in the goldmedal game of IPC World Sledge Hockey championship in Goyang, South Korea. A signed jersey was given as a gift, which is memorialized in an encasement designed by Kootenay Columbia Learning Centre (KCLC) student Curtis Haynes, 14. Sheri Regnier photo

Your mood is pleasant and playful this week, Aries. It’s a perfect time to plan a social engagement or party at your home. Invite friends and family and have a good time.

Libra, an irritating issue seems to fix itself and that is relieving. Remember, you do not have to take on everything yourself. Plenty of people are willing to lend a hand.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22

Taurus, take time to find ways to relax and unwind. This could mean removing yourself from tense or competitive situations for a little while until things calm down.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21

Your imagination is ignited this week, Gemini. This can clear the path for new beginnings. Make sure decisions you make now are centered and empowered.

Sagittarius, when your imagination is stimulated, there’s nothing you cannot accomplish. This may be an interesting week for you, as restless energy has you seeking an outlet.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 This week brings all sorts of interesting ideas and desires, Leo. There’s much to keep you busy, but make sure you don’t overdo things. Avoid the urge to stretch yourself too thin.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Don’t be surprised if your feelings are all over the place this week, Virgo. The week might feel like a roller coaster, but you will feel great by the end of the week.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you may need to look at a problem from another perspective to find the best solution. Discuss your findings with others and see if they have any suggestions.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Take things easy and let your intuition work for you, Aquarius. Financial or business-related projects fall in your lap, and you work through them quite easily.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Emotions reach a high after hearing good news this week, Pisces. It’s okay to let your guard down a bit around your loved ones.
