SERVING MISSION SINCE 1908

Increase in top earners 57 district staffers earned more than $75,000 Alex BUTLER

of forest management Robert O’Neal ($130,710). Ten staff members on the list – or 17.5 per cent – were firefighters, who earned between $82,317 and $126,139. Mayor Randy Hawes, who was elected in November 2014, said some of the increases are likely related to overtime costs for firefighters. He added that there has been a “huge amount of staff turnover” at the district in the last couple of years, which probably also led to overtime costs for other staff members. He said that exempt staff haven’t had a raise in about four years, “so it’s not like it’s an increase in salaries.” Hawes said no elected officials in any city look forward to big staffing cost increases and it is monitored closely. Former mayor Ted Adlem earned $65,156 in 2014, from January until November, when he lost his re-election bid. He also had $5,005 in expenses. The district spent about $15.8 million on remuneration for all of its staff and elected officials in 2014, an increase of $670,249 from 2013. According to Hawes, the district has about 250 employees and a total budget of just over $40 million. The full list can be found in the council agenda at www.mission.ca.

This 1941 Willys garnered plenty of attention from attendees at the annual Old Car Sunday in the park event. Great weather brought huge crowds and a bevy of classic cars to Mission’s Fraser River Heritage Park for the showcase, which has become a Father’s day tradition.

Thousands admire classic cars It was a car lover’s dream on Sunday as Mission’s Fraser River Heritage Park hosted the annual Old Car Sunday in the Park event. More than 1,300 vehicles were on display at the showcase, which is quickly becoming a Father’s day tradition.

The show is one of the largest displays of vintage, antique and collector vehicles in Western Canada. Thousands of people came out for the chance to peek under the hood of a classic automobile. As if the vehicles weren’t enough, the event also

featured food, entertainment and kids activities. Entry was by donation with a portion of the proceeds going to Variety – The Children’s Charity. Next year’s show, set for June 19, 2016, will mark the 25th anniversary of the popular event.

The number of District of Mission staffers earning more than $75,000 rose by nearly 30 per cent last year to 57, up from 44 in 2013. The district released its 2014 statement of financial information report last week, which is required under provincial law to include a list of employees earning more than $75,000. For the three previous years, the number of employees earning more than $75,000 in remuneration stayed consistent at 44. In 2011 and 2012, the number of staff making more than $100,000 was 21. That decreased slightly in 2013, with only 18 staffers making six-figure salaries. Last year, that number rose to 25. The city’s highest earner in 2014 was chief administrative officer Ken Bjorgaard, who earned $191,255. In February, Bjorgaard’s contract was terminated. He was replaced by Ron Poole, who had served as CAO for the District of Kitimat. The next highest earner last year was director of development services Mike Younie ($141,731), followed by manager of finance Kris Boland ($139,055); director of parks, recreation and culture Maureen Sinclair ($136,467); and director

RV parking ban lifted Tourists can stay overnight in Walmart lot Tyler OLSEN ABBOTSFORD NEWS

Mission needs places for residents and tourists to park their recreational vehicles, Mayor Randy Hawes said Monday as council voted to waive a prohibition against RV parking at Walmart. When council approved the development of the shopping centre that includes Walmart four years ago, a covenant was placed on the property requiring that the developer ban overnight parking on the site, except by staff. Walmart is known for taking an accepting stance toward RV drivers who wish to park their vehicles overnight at their stores, and staff were worried that free overnight parking could become a problem during major events. Mayor Randy Hawes noted that Walmart is the only property with specific restrictions against overnight parking. On Monday, council decided to

Council pays $75,000 to keep Clarke open District of Mission councillors approved a one-time contribution of $75,000 at a closed meeting earlier this month in order to forestall the potential closure of the Clarke Theatre, Mayor Randy Hawes said at Monday’s council meeting. Hawes said budgetary pressures at the school board, which operates the theatre, had put the theatre’s operations in doubt. “Without this, there’s every possibility that

the school board would have to padlock the facility and there would be no use by the community of that facility,” Hawes said. “As a council, every one of us felt we could not allow that to happen.” Hawes said the money is for one year only, during which a review will be undertaken. Hawes said a formal agreement with the school board will be signed before any more financial commitments are made.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Vaping: Why debate?

Inhaling vapours from an e-cigarette, also known as vaping, is a growing trend for many people. Some say they like the flavours, others believe it helps them to stop smoking, while some say it’s just something to do. The real question is not why people vape, but what impact it has on their health. And the answer is we just don’t know. Health officials are wary of the product, but admit there is no evidence yet whether it is harmful or not. However, they do point out that e-cigarettes are unregulated, which

Do you support new government regulations banning e-cigarettes from schools and indoor public spaces?

raises quality control questions. In an age where everybody seems overly concerned with what they are putting in their bodies – who doesn’t read the labels on food products these days – it’s difficult to comprehend why someone would risk breathing in a vapour that may be harmful. Even more worrisome is the fact that children and teens seem to be the demographic target, considering the products come in a variety of fun flavours. There should be no debate. If there are possible health concerns, the producr should be avoided.

LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Should public service unions take political stands during elections? Here’s how you responded:

Fast action saves deer Thank you all for helping Last Friday morning, driving south on Barr Street just before reaching Ferndale, I noticed something unusual in the beaver pond on the east side of Barr. I often glance to see if I can catch a glimpse of a beaver there, but instead, I saw what appeared to be some other kind of animal in the south-east corner of the “beaver deceiver” installed last year. I stopped my vehicle and went to look. To my horror, it was a doe. The corners of the beaver deceiver are stiffened with a short piece of 2x6. These are positioned a little in from the corner, resulting in an open, triangular space. The doe had gotten her head up through the open triangle and her forelegs through the wire grid. She was stuck and was clearly in significant distress, foaming a little from her mouth, shivering and obviously completely exhausted. After a few seconds of thought and lacking any tools, I phoned Mission public works and spoke with Shirley on reception/dispatch. I explained the situation to her. In minutes, operations manager Matt Dunham arrived in his own vehicle. He walked over to where I was standing and looked out at the deer. He was about to call for some assistance when Dennis and Julie arrived in a public works pickup. Matt took a shovel and a piece of 2x6 about six feet long from the truck.

To all who contributed to Nolin’s Gala and Art Auction, thank you. It was a huge success and we could not of done it without you! We had an amazing evening of great food, swinging music and dance, informative video about Nolin’s condition, astonishing artwork, wonderful unique silent auction items and gorgeous flowers. We raised over $10,000 from the

Some fast action helped save this doe which became caught in a “beaver SUBMITTED PHOTO deceiver.” Using these to steady himself, he walked out the 1.5 inch wide frame of the beaver deceiver until he was close to the deer. Then, using the piece of 2x6 as a platform, he knelt beside the deer and managed to get her back out of the corner and to push her back towards Dennis and Julie. Dennis and Julie lifted it out of the water onto the shore where it lay, too exhausted and too much in shock to move. I went to my vehicle and brought out an old quilt and warm blanket. Julie proceeded to use these to dry off and warm the deer as best she could. It was decided that the deer should be taken to a veterinarian. The deer was taken to Hill’n Dale Animal Hospital, where Dr.

Federici examined the deer, a new mother, put her on IV fluids to help with the shock and provided her with heat as well for her hypothermia. Later Friday evening, the BC Wildlife Service released her into the same general area, hopefully to be re-united with her fawn. Without the rapid, caring intervention of Mission Public Works staff, this deer would have drowned or died of exhaustion and hypothermia in very short order. I would like to commend the four public works staff. We have some truly admirable people working for the residents of Mission, both human and animal. Chris Ryan Mission

Taxi slams into pole Driver taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

A single vehicle accident on First Avenue in Mission sent a taxi driver to hospital and tied up downtown traffic Thursday (June 25) morning. At approximately 8 a.m., the driver of a Central Valley Taxi slammed into a traffic light pole, at the intersection of First Avenue and Murray Street. It appears that the driver was planning to turn right onto the Mur-

ray Street overpass when he struck the pole. Police, ambulance and fire were all on scene as the driver was taken to hospital with undisclosed injures. He was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the accident. The collision was hard enough to dislodge the traffic light from the pole, sending it crashing to the pavement. Traffic was slow in the area for several hours as police continued to investigate.

Building permits down The value of building permits issued in the Mission/Abbotsford region continued to slump in April, declining 45 per cent over the previous month, according to the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA). The value of building permits – called a “bedrock indicator” of the local economy by the VRCA – was also down significantly over the first four months of the year, with $50.9 million worth of permits issued in the Abbotsford census metropolitan area – which includes Mission – compared to just over $70 million in the first four months of 2014. Those decreases are mirrored by a

drop in the number of construction jobs, with employment dropping in the industry in May for the fourth straight month. Around 9,300 people worked in the industry in May, a decrease of nearly 2,500 jobs from last November. In the Lower Mainland-Southwest Region, however, the numbers are heading in the opposite direction, with building permits up over the previous year and employment also on the increase. VRCA president Fiona Famuluk predicted this area’s construction industry will likely rebound – although probably not before more jobs are lost.

78-year-old Mission author recounts trips to Canadian north Brandon KOSTINUK ABBOTSFORD NEWS

Mission resident Freda Mellenthin proves there’s no age limit when it comes to outdoor recreation in extreme conditions. In her self-published book, Love in the Northern Rapids, Freda recounts 18 paddling expeditions she and her husband Ted took in the Canadian Arctic, the Inside Passage and Sea of Cortez, to name

just a few locales. The two embarked upon their first canoe trek as a couple at the age of 62. What’s more, they had just met months prior, on a blind date no less. Freda was a novice at whitewater canoeing. Ted, a long-time Calgary resident, was an expert paddler with years of experience. On their first expedition – in an 18-foot homemade fibreglass canoe with food for

42 days individually packed and stored in two watertight barrels – they paddled over 1,200 kilometres in just six weeks, traversing rivers and lakes from the northeast of Yellowknife to Baker Lake in Nunavut. The distance spanned was equivalent to Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba combined. After 40 days, they arrived in the wide bay of Baker Lake. “We were soon plan-

ning our next trip,” says Freda. The two married on the last day of the century. Freda, a retired teacher, never intended to write this book. She recounts writing small notes and passages, sitting inside a mosquito tent, recording the day’s events and memories to cherish. After pressure from family and friends, Freda said she began compiling and writing

what is now the 356page, self-published novel, Love in Northern Rapids. “I thought the book would be a good message to other people our age.” It’s never too late to try something daring and new. “But you have to be careful,” she cautions, and Ted nods along in agreement. Freda recalls the Back River, the longest river of the Barren Lands which flows northeast across Nunavut and into the Arctic Ocean. The Back, Freda explains, is known for its cold weather patterns where north winds and relentless rain can turn a quiet adventure into something more risky. “We capsized on the Muskox,” she says. They were forced to hop out and push their canoe to shore, braving the icy waters. What happened after? She says, “Read the book!” It takes significant planning and prepa-

With little by way of people or nearby amenities, food supplies must be enough to last the duration of the trip – and capacity is, of course, limited. And though they carry a GPS satellite phone in case of an emergency, help may not arrive fast enough in some of the more remote areas.

Freda says the two, both now 78, don’t go on extreme northern paddling trips any longer. They are a part of the Dogwood Canoe and Kayak Club, and go on smaller paddling excursions, from Mission to Langley, for instance, and always with others. Freda’s book is available through Chapters & Indigo or online, at Western Canoeing in Abbotsford, or directly through Freda at fredamellenthin.com.

for the event, which drew about 100 golfers, compared to 40 in the first year. “I’m also glad the weather co-operated,” Swaine said. Debbie Tonn, Fraser Valley development co-ordinator for Canuck Place, said the generosity of Lanka Jewels – owner Ken and his kids, Nathan and Naomi – was something truly special. “There are no beds open at the Abbotsford Hospice yet,” said Tonn. “Canuck Place must raise 80 per cent of its own operating funds.” The goal is to have beds set up by 2017 and Tonn added this event alone would be a significant boost. The hospice is currently providing care for seven Mission families, though Tonn said 48 per cent of children in the Canuck Place program are from the Fraser Valley area. This was also a main contributing factor for the hospice to have established an Abbotsford location in spring 2014. Despite having no open beds, Tonn said the Abbotsford hospice provides counselling services, music therapy and therapy for siblings and parents.

Sandpiper Golf Course in Harrison Mills was abuzz with golfers at the third annual Lanka Jewels charity golf tournament last Friday afternoon, and for good reason. One-hundred per cent of the tournament proceeds go directly to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. Ken Selvaraja, owner of Lanka Jewels and a key organizer of the event, said he was more than happy with the turnout, which was close to 100 golfers. “Support from Toronto, Edmonton and parts of B.C., from Campbell River to Vancouver Island, showed up today,” said Selvaraja. In addition to the proceeds garnered from the $165 entry cost, silent auctions for a signed Daniel Sedin hockey stick, Canucks Club Seat tickets for the upcoming season, Okanagan wine, diamond earrings and a custom-designed ring — provided by Lanka Jewels — were all on the docket. Naomi Selvaraja-Fossett said the event is expected to raise between $10,000 and $20,000. Last year, $8,000 was raised. Ted Swaine, director of corporate sales at Sandpiper Golf Course, said turnout was great

Longtime touring illusionist John Kaplan is taking time off the road this summer to reveal some of his secrets in a new summer magic camp program being presented at various community centers throughout the Lower Mainland, including Mission. “I’ve been touring Canada for 35 years,” said Kaplan. “And now I feel that it’s time for me to help inspire the next generation of magical practitioners.” Kaplan credits much of his success to several great mentors he had. “There’s been thousands of books written about magic, video and DVD instructional tools and of course now the internet, but there’s really nothing better than hands-on learning from an actual magician. It really is the very best way to learn how to do amazing things properly.” On Aug. 14, at the Mission Leisure Centre, youngsters have the opportunity to be taught how to do magic tricks and be able to astound their family and friends. Children age six to 12 years old are welcome. The Mission session is part of the Leisure Centre Camp Wanarok program. For cost and details call the centre at 604-820-5350.

MISSION RECORD

Summer is officially here and that means many people are preparing for a holiday. While summer is the most common time for a break, retirees often have more flexibility. “If you are senior and you want to travel, you’re better off going on the shoulder season, rather than the high season,” said Debbie Trenholm, owner/manager of World Odyssey Travel and Cruise in Mission. “There’s less kids and it’s usually less expensive.” While many people have to book their trips around Christmas vacation, spring break or during the summer, seniors have many more options. “Go in September. Go in June. Go when the kids are still in school and the prices are a little bit more com-

petitive. Of course, many seniors still want to enjoy some time in the sun and a summer cruise is often the answer. At this time of year, the Alaska cruise is still the most popular travel destination for seniors. Trenholm said it’s because they don’t have to fly anywhere, they just get someone to take them into Vancouver. Then they are on the ship and looked after. “Because a lot of seniors don’t want to fly anymore,” she said. Sometimes it’s for health reasons, but more often they just don’t want the hassle of the upgraded security, time change, and other travel challenges. “We are finding more and more seniors usually looking for options that they don’t have to get on a plane.” Cruises are also popular because of the convenience.

Order your

“You don’t have to keep packing and unpacking.” On coach tours, travelers often stay at different hotels every few days. That requires constantly loading up your suitcase and unpacking at the next destination which many seniors don’t want to do. For those who don’t mind hopping from one hotel to another, Eastern coach tours are also popular as it allows seniors to visit the other side of Canada. Hawaii is still high on the list as it is a relatively short flight and an English-speaking destination. Seniors are also looking for shorter trips, especially if they are leaving the country. “They don’t want to pay insurance for two weeks, they want to go for four or five days. They maybe don’t

FOR SENIORS

HENRY LAU

July May 2015 2015

INTRODUCTION: Henry is 72 years old and was born and lived in St. Louis, Missouri until he was 17. His education includes a total of six years attending Universities in Miami and Iowa. Although he had hoped to finish a PHD program, he was only able to do two years in Graduate School in Iowa. Henry decided to leave the United States and in 1968 moved to Norway House, Manitoba where he taught grades 1 to 3 for approximately six months. He then moved to North Vancouver and worked in a credit union as a loans officer for three years but transferred to a bank and moved to Mission, shortly after he married his wife Barbara. He worked for the bank for a year but because he volunteered in North Vancouver as a Telephone Crisis Line Counsellor and enjoyed it, he applied at Corrections and started to work there in 1974 until retirement in 2003.

VOLUNTEER: Henry belongs to a few choirs, often singing solo. He performs with the Joy Vox Choir, practicing once a week and performing at concerts and the Festival of Voice with the proceeds going to the food bank; the Valley Singers, practicing and going weekly to local care homes; and a new group called John’s Group over the last year performing at various functions. KEEPING ACTIVE: Music has many health benefits. Henry started taking lessons in voice about four years ago, switched to piano about a year ago and now alternates between voice and piano. He also goes to open mike at a local pub and their social gathering at the Abbotsford Flea Market once a week but also works in their garden and most often walks his dog at least once daily. “For heights and depths no words can reach, music is the soul’s own speech.” ( Henry David Thoreau).

Mission Community Foundation The Foundation is well known for its philanthropic efforts with regard to the student population of Mission. This year we will be giving out in excess of $50,000 to the graduating classes of Mission High schools as well as supporting dry grad. However, we are very aware of the needs of Seniors groups as well and the distribution committee gives out community grants 3 times in each year. The recipients include lifetime learning, hospice and support for other worthwhile projects. Many readers will be aware that we received a large bequest in the will of the late Marilyn Boswyk. This money, currently just over $1 million, has been dedicated to the building of a seniors centre in Mission, or alternatively for the furtherance of senior’s

activities. After discussion and with the full agreement of the seniors advisory group, it has been decided that half of the money will be dedicated for construction costs and the interest generated from the other half will be used ad infinitum to help defray the costs of ongoing maintenance. In this way Marilyn’s bequest will continue to serve the interests of seniors long into the future. We would like to encourage those of our readers to consider Mission Community Foundation when they are making bequests in their will. Remember that our administrative costs are minimal and the interest from your generosity will stay in this town forever to benefit its citizens in whatever way you choose.

Seniors have more flexibility in their travel schedule FROM 21

feel comfortable being away from their home for too long anymore, so we are doing a lot of little short trips, to San Diego or Palm Springs,” said Trenholm. That, of course, does not encompass every senior. Trenholm is quick to point out that many retirees are still booking flights to Paris, Italy or wherever. It depends on how active they want to be. “A lot of our seniors are in unbelievable health now, so really, there is no problem, they travel like anybody else. You can’t just say, ‘because you’re 65, you can’t go wherever.’ It’s totally going to depend on their health and their frame of mind.” The following are some travel tips. Insurance: Trenholm said all travelers should have proper medical insurance if they plan on leaving the country. “You can’t travel without that, just don’t do it.” She also suggests people have cancellation insurance, although some may be willing to take the risk of losing their initial investment, rather than pay more for insurance. Prescriptions: Make sure you have an adequate amount of your pre-

scription drugs with you. Also, have a copy of your prescription from your doctor. “In case you lose your prescriptions or they’re stolen or lost, you may have to replace them.” Eyeglasses: Take a spare pair. Many vacations have been ruined because someone broke their glasses and had to spend two blurry weeks on holiday. Accommodations: Trenholm advises that people look carefully at the hotels they book. “A lot of hotels, especially in another country, don’t necessarily have elevators and we assume that they would. So all of a sudden you are on the third floor and you can’t do the stairs.” The same reasoning applies to wheelchair accessibility. Some hotels don’t have rooms, or have limited numbers of rooms designed to people with disabilities or movement issues. A travel agent should be able to ensure you are booked into a facility to suit your personal needs. Safety: Don’t take large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry with you on holidays. “If you are taking some cash, split it up. Don’t have it all in one little purse.”

The society coordinates an annual fundraising opportunity for non-profits in the district of Mission to raise up to $400 by participating in a district-wide litter clean-up event. “The annual Adopt-A-Block Clean-Up events are a great way for local organizations to receive financial support from the district while contributing to community-wide efforts to see Mission litter-free,” said Sophie Thomas, program co-ordinator. Mission resident Renee Berard with be out racing her Honda S2000 this weekend (June 27-28) at the Sports Car Club of B.C. “June Bug” races at the Mission Raceway road course. The “westerly a cappella group” WAG will perform on Friday, June 26 from 7 to 8 p.m. as part of the 25th season of the Envision Financial Twilight Concert Series at Fraser River Heritage Park. WAG has performed all over B.C. in a wide array of venues. They have delighted countless folks in evening concerts, as roving performers in Whistler, and on the main stage at the PNE. Whether on trains, at festivals,

in coffee shops or at the Vancouver Playhouse, WAG’s tremendous musicality and honest approach has something for everyone. A WAG concert should make you laugh and make you cry. There will be finger-snapping favourites and sweet, wellcrafted original songs. Most recently WAG has been focusing on creating original music and performing around the Lower Mainland. On Wednesday and Friday evenings from 7 to 8 p.m. until August 28, bring a lawn chair or blanket and settle in for a range of live music at Fraser River Heritage Park. Admission to the

concerts is free, though donations to this community-based series are appreciated. For more information about the Envision Financial Twilight Concert Series, including the full concert schedule, contact the Mission Heritage Association at 604-826-0277, email twilightconcerts. mission@gmail.com or visit heritagepark-mission.ca or facebook. com/envisiontwilightconcertseries. The concert series will take a break on Wednesday, July 1 to make way for Mission’s Canada Day celebrations at Fraser River Heritage Park. For information visit facebook.com/MissionCanadaDay.

forms well and the continuous tweaking has resulted in improved fuel economy. If you were to attend any of the major manufacturer media launches, you would hear journo after journo complain about the audacity of carmakers who use CVT. In the old days, CVT deserved its poor reputation with power lags, high revving, uneven gearing and unedifying and unexpected lurches forward! The technology has evolved. And, the fact is the average consumer has no problem with it, liking the smoother transitions. My first test route was in the Whistler area and showed off its hill climbing skills and the smoothness of the ‘dreaded’ CVT. It’s no gazelle but it is sure-footed and the CVT did not fail even when the driver behaved like a lead foot! I found the ride to be smooth and highway passing no challenge. Cornering at sensible speeds keeps the vehicle firmly planted. It’s darn quiet too. Then I spent a week tooling around

Parking on the street was a little challenging but I’ll put that down to impatient drivers behind, not prepared for the Murano’s wide swing needed to get into that tricky spot. On the supermarket lot, it glided into spaces forwards or backwards with ease. It’s a fine long-distance vehicle but would serve well as a commuter where longer distances are the norm. I can see it being used in the suburbs but it’s a bit large for the centre of the city. The Murano is not too thirsty for its size – 11.2/8.3 L/100 kms. YOUR BEST SHOT

Here’s your chance to win the...

WORK OUT YOUR SALVATION WITH DILIGENCE Most of us probably spend more time each day thinking about and preparing our daily meals than we do thinking about where and how we will spend eternity. These relatively minor concerns of the day, from what we will eat, to what we will wear, and generally, how we will maximize our pleasures and minimize our pain and suffering, have a tendency to crowd out the more important, spiritual concerns. If we spend more time thinking about eating than about our salvation, perhaps this is merely a refection of the fact that we value our stomachs more than we do our souls. And, if we spend more time fantasizing about our material possessions than we do about our spiritual ones, then again, this is merely a reflection of where our treasure is. All great religious figures have reminded us of this. Jesus warned: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21) Consider too, the last words of Buddha, which could just as well have been uttered by Jesus: “All compounded things are impermanent. Work out your own salvation with diligence.” And finally, consider the advice of Paul to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,” i.e., humbly and with complete dependence to God. (Philippians 2:12)

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. New K.J.V. John 3:16
