TERRACE - June 21 brought out crowds for National Aboriginal Day celebrations at George Little Park in Terrace with music, dance groups, cultural displays, educational displays, arts and crafts displays and food. Top is Maureen Johnson fashioning another piece of bannock for the deep fryer. Her family is a Saturday regular at the farmers market in Terrace. Meanwhile, on the right, Father’s Day, also June 21, saw people testing their archery precision at the Kitimat Rod and Gun Club. The event was part of the wider provincial Family Fishing Day, and locally included a barbecue and some exhibits inside the rod and gun hall.

KITIMAT – A seismic survey of Kitimat is being undertaken which will explore the ground beneath us. Trevor Allen, a seismologist for the Geological Survey of Canada, explained they’re using a truck called a “minivibe” which will push low-level seismic waves into the ground in an effort to map the type of ground the town sits on. “This is part of a much larger program to better assess the earthquake hazards in the B.C. north coast region,” he said. Aside from the minivibe, a network of seismometers have been installed around the north coast region to monitor if there is small earthquake activity, which if so could indicate active faults in the region. In Kitimat such a sensor has been installed at the Hirsch Creek Golf Course. In a technical sense this new study in Kitimat will see how fast earthquake waves can travel through the ground. With very similar valleys in the area, Kitimat is essentially the test subject to get

Studying Kitimat’s ground will map out the type of ground Kitimat sits on more clearly. “We’re really trying to get a sense of what the shape

of the bedrock below the Kitimat Valley is and how that might affect seismic waves travelling in to the soft surface sediments,” The information gathered will be shared in reports and at conferences but the building code may be an eventual beneficiary of this. “As part of this work we would like to see some of the results that we see from Kitimat then feed in to the national building code as well.”

Prince Rupert RCMP investigate an early-morning fire June 19 at the Four Winds Apartments prompting the evacuation of 45 occupants.

Rupert vehicles ablaze By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - Two more vehicles were set on fire in Prince Rupert last week, bringing the total to five over the past several weeks. Prince Rupert RCMP and the Prince Rupert Fire Rescue Department have responded to five separate vehicle fires between June 11 and 19, with four of the five incidents being deemed suspicious in nature. Most recently, emergency responders were called to two different vehicle fires in the early morning hours of June 19, starting with a fire involving a truck on 11th Avenue East at approximately 3:51 a.m. “We do not believe that fire is associated to these four fires and is being treated as a separate incident,” said Const. Matt Ericson, spokesperson for the Prince Rupert RCMP. However, later that morning RCMP and fire fighters were called to another fire at approximately 4:50 a.m. at the Four Winds Apartments on Kootenay Avenue. “It was another fire that was suspicious in nature and did extensive damage to the underside of the building ...

the fire department and the RCMP had to evacuate 45 people from the apartment because it did have the potential to run through the building. Fortunately, we were able to do a quick put out and stop it from spreading,” said fire chief Dave McKenzie last week. “There was extensive smoke damage to the building, but fortunately no injuries,” added Ericson. “Witnesses at the scene did observe two men running from the area at around the same time the fire was observed. One of these men was not wearing a shirt, but that was the only information this witness was able to provide investigators,” said Ericson. This comes after two incidents taking place in the early morning of June 11, with two vehicles being set on fire on Seventh Avenue East. Then on June 14, another vehicle was lit in flames on Chamberlain Avenue, with investigators determining it had been deliberately set. “At this stage, all four fires are being treated as suspicious,” said Ericson. “Currently, members of our criminal investigation team have been fully engaged and are actively pursuing leads,” he said.

Employment levels expected to rise in B.C.’s Northwest

SERVICE SECTOR ON THE DECLINE, BUT INDUSTRY SECTOR SEES PROJECTS MOVE FORWARD IN PRINCE RUPERT, AREA By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - A report by the Chartered Professional Accountants of B.C. (CPABC) indicates, while the Northwest may have experienced job cuts in the service sector last year, the future is looking bright. The CPABC recently released

its annual Regional Check-Up report on Northwest B.C., comprised of the North Coast and Nechako regions, that states the labour market deteriorated in 2014, with total employment in the region reaching its lowest level in at least a decade. Statistics Canada reported an overall loss of 1,600 jobs in 2014, a result of shrinking em-

ployment in the services-producing sector. This contributed to a 1.1 per cent increase in the unemployment rate, for an annual average of eight per cent. However, the report noted that virtually all job losses were part-time. But economic activity is expected to pick up on the North

Coast in 2015, as four projects located in and around Prince Rupert move forward: the Fairview Container Terminal Expansion, Prince Rupert Potash Terminal upgrade, and the Prince Rupert and Westcoast Gas Transmission Projects, worth a combined total of $12.4 billion. The report states if these proj-

The Nepalese people are a mix of cultures which are predominantly Hindu and Buddhist living harmoniously together. In my experience, the Nepalese people are friendly, generous and kind, in spite of the fact that the average per capita income in Nepal is 730$US. Students thrive here: NWCC into the academic world ... we do know students who begin their academic journey at a community college in British Columbia actually perform better in university than students who go direct entry,” said Burt. “They graduate quicker, they have better retention, they have better scores, better grades along the way and they actually do it cheaper because they can live at home for the first one or two years.” Pond added that his own experiences in post-secondary helped give him perspective on his opinions on the matter. “In my first year science, I was dumped in classes of three or 400 and nobody knew my name, nobody cared whether I got my assignments done and some kids have the self-discipline to pull that off, but lots don’t. So community college is a much more intimate learning environment, there’s access to all the learning that you would get in your first year or second year and then of course, there’s the trade side of the equation as well and skills upgrading,” Pond added. The board travels to all their meetings – four or five each year, a reduced drop from 10 in previous years due to redundant scheduling – to each of their campuses spread out across the region. It includes members originating from Haida Gwaii all the way to Houston and they’ve held a reception in

PRINCE RUPERT - Northwest Community College Board of Governors and president and CEO Ken Burt sent a loud and clear message to students, parents and community leaders of Northwest B.C. at its food and drink reception last Thursday evening: Don’t take the college in your own backyard for granted. As Northwest Community College (NWCC) prepared for its year-end board meeting held in Prince Rupert last Friday, board chair Herb Pond and president and CEO Ken Burt outlined the numerous benefits of sending a graduating secondary school student, or an adult continuing education to NWCC.“We want to connect with the community. We want to make sure that students, parents and leaders in the community don’t see a local college as a second choice, but rather it should be high, high on the list, if not the very first consideration,” said Pond.Topping the reasons for attending NWCC or an area college president Burt explained, is the benefits a younger student might receive while attending NWCC for their first or second year of post-secondary and then moving on to a university elsewhere. “We provide a great gateway

Event in Village sought to raise awareness of elder abuse By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - A video projected in the gymnasium of the Haisla Recreation Centre shows some examples of elder abuse: one in which a person pockets money from an elderly lady’s account at an ATM machine, another where a man is given an extra dose of medicine so he’ll just sleep away the day out of people’s way. As attendees learned at an Elder

Abuse Awareness event in Kitamaat Village, elder abuse comes in many forms, from physical to financial to emotional, and everything in between. It’s a topic that has its share of taboo, but the Haisla Health Centre in hosting the event are looking at bringing the issues to light. Cassandra Mitchell, one of a team of professionals at the Haisla Health Centre, said this is the first time Elder Abuse has been formally tackled in Kitamaat Village, and

the underlying purpose was to find ways to honour and respect elders. Services to support people wanting to discuss elder abuse includes counselling and a wealth of information resources. The health manager Eric Bottah said some of the challenges of dealing with these sorts of issues is that usual rights, individuality and privacy, can sometimes work against people looking to help, in the sense that bringing these issues up, for some people, would be violating

those rights. People, he said, might not want to come across as nosy, basically, he said. Yet Bottah counters with “when you see something, say something.” An open event such as the one hosted in the Haisla Rec Centre is one step towards reducing the stigma of bringing up issues of elder abuse. He said there are no available statistics to show exactly how widespread elder abuse may be in the community — a result of that stig-

ma, no doubt — but he encourages people to speak out whenever they can. The event included talks from Mike Christensen with Northwest Counselling who spoke about his own family’s experience on this topic, and from the Kitimat RCMP represented by Cst. Brad Walsh who explained the RCMP’s role in elder abuse, noting reporting abuse doesn’t automatically lead to arrests and charges, which for many can be a reason not to report the crimes.

Human-caused fires a headache for crews By Cecile Favron

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - Members of the East Indian community through the Skeena Valley Guru Nanak Brotherhood made more than 1,500 samosas for sale over two days at the end of May with the proceeds of $4,000 going toward the Canadian Cancer Society’s Terrace Relay for Life. From the left, Pammi Parmar, Mohinder Dhansaw, Sukhwinder Prihar, relay organizer Jessica Gaus, Surjit Uppal and Bhai Artar Singh.

Store thefts

TERRACE - Employees at two stores here were busy last week dealing with criminal activity. At Safeway, a loss prevention officer arrested two girls, ages 13 and 12, for shoplifting. Police also arrested the girls and they were turned over to their guardians, report Terrace RCMP. Also at Safeway, a employee store loss prevention officer arrested a man trying to steal $700 in groceries. Terrace RCMP officers are forwarding charge recommendations to provincial Crown Counsel lawyers. Meanwhile, at Walmart, a loss prevention officer arrested a woman for fraud. Terrace RCMP report she attempted to return items that were not purchased in order to obtain cash gift cards in return. Police then arrested the woman, 25, and are forwarding charge information to provincial Crown Counsel lawyers.

TERRACE - A spike in humancaused wildfires in the Skeena region, including one on Terrace Mountain, has left local fire officials frustrated. Six fires in the Terrace, Kitimat, and Nass Valley area were started by people over a span of a week and a half in early June. The problem started with a small fire on the west side of Kalum Lake on June 6 that burned no more than a quarter of a hectare thanks to the quick response of firefighting attack crews. Another fire was discovered along Hirsch Creek near Hwy 37 between Terrace and Kitimat on June 7. Two small wildfires were sparked on June 10, one was nine kilometres northwest of Terrace and the other was near the Rio Tinto Alcan facility in Kitimat. Two more fires, each 0.15 hectares in size were started on June 14 and 15. The first was alarmingly close to home just on Terrace mountain and, as of last week, was still being monitored for smoke and heat by fire

crews. The latest fire was on Iron Mountain north of Kitimat. All fires except for the Terrace Mountain fire are out and they are all considered to be human caused, even though the Rio Tinto Alcan fire is still under investigation. Although all six fires were small in size, it is always a challenge to contain them quickly and fighting humancaused fires takes resources away from fighting lightning-caused fires, explained Olivia Pojar of the Northwest Fire Centre. There was just one lightningcaused wildfire in the region over this period which was sparked along Lakelse River 19 kilometres southwest of Terrace on June 15. As of late last week this fire was still not out although it is no longer burning, crews are checking up on it periodically. At the time of these fires, the fire danger rating in the Skeena zone ranged from “moderate” to “extreme” and the risk of a forest fire where the danger rating was “high” or “extreme” is considered to be serious. The fire centre said that, under these ratings, “wildfires will start easily, spread rapidly and challenge suppression efforts.”

Firefighters to host scramble

Man overboard!

CONTRIBUTED / SPECIAL TO THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

On the weekend of May 30-31, Prince Rupert 11th Scouts and Cub Scouts enjoyed a fantastic weekend of learning and adventure provided by Peter Loy of the North Coast School of Canoeing. The Scouts were taught basic canoeing skills and survival techniques, including minimizing heat loss when in the water, and how to stabilize and climb back into a canoe if they fall into the water. Scouts were also invited to design and paint their own paddle as part of the 2015 Paddle for Wellness initiative with Mr. Loy and the Friendship House.

Sunday is market time By Cecile Favron

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - The Sunday Market held weekly at the Skeena Landing might seem like an extension of the popular Farmers Market, but it’s not. The Sunday Market does provide an alternative venue for sellers to market their homemade goods, but the fees paid by the vendors go to the charitable organization that organizes the event. The Sunday Market, although only in its second year, already hosts around 14 regular vendors providing baked goods, homemade jam and honey, and handmade jewelry and other crafts as well as live music. The latest charity to take over the event is Kimmunity Angels – a charity formed in 2014 to provide funds to people in Terrace who are dealing with serious illness. Founder Donna Slavic explains that the name and the charity were formed to honour a friend, Kim, who lost her battle with terminal cancer. The Kimmunity Angels Society took over the Sunday Market at the beginning of June and currently have 10 volunteers to help organize the vendors and set up signage for the event. The $10 fee paid by the vendors goes towards the Kimmunity Angels fund. Slavic is hoping to attract even more people and vendors to the market. “We want it to be a big event, a place where families can go on a Sunday afternoon to hang out and enjoy themselves. We are hoping to get the word out there to get more foot traffic [and] a variety of [vendors],” Slavic explained.

Slavic said that she is really looking to make it a family friendly event and is scoping out potential supporters in the community to provide fun kids activities. For more information, Phone: 250 641 3044, email: give@kimmunityangels society.ca or go to www.kimmunityangels society.ca.

Cow Bay Days near By Martina Perry

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - The mer-

chants of Cow Bay are hosting the fourth annual Cow Bay Days on July 4, with the fun taking place between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. “The whole idea is to give back to the community and celebrate the unique area we get to work in,” said main organizer Connie Jack of Udder Bags, who has been involved with organizing the event for the past three years. This year, there are 21 merchants participating in the event, putting on activities in

the main event area or outside of businesses. “There will be a cow balloon, which is why our slogan is “Watch for the Cow Balloon”, to recognize which businesses are participating,” explained Jack. The main event area will be in the parking lot beside Cow Bay Gift Galley, where there will be a bouncy castle, animal balloons, a variety of games and more. Some of the other activities taking place as part of the event will include barbecues, prize draws, a crab bowl, instore samples and a photo booth.

Unit 205 -4650 Lazelle Ave., Terrace Angela’s Hearing Solutions is a new business that opened in March of 2014. We are a local, family owned and operated company. Although it is a new business, I have worked in the hearing health care field for the past 11 years, first alongside the Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists (ENT) Dr. deJager and Dr. Vanlierde. After my tenure in the ENT office I trained for a career in the hearing industry and worked for a hearing company as the primary hearing consultant, and Registered Hearing Instrument Practitioner. In January of 2014 I resigned from that role to start my own dream! We are in our second year of providing the best hearing care possible and solutions that work for each person on an individual basis. Our main office operates in Terrace with satellite clinics that run on Fridays at Delta King in Kitimat, and a clinic at the Prince Rupert Hospital 2 times per month. The Kitimat and Prince Rupert clinics are by appointment only. All appointments are booked through our Terrace office. We are a private company with no government funding. Our governing body is the College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of BC. We are a service provider for Veterans Affairs (DVA), First Nations Health (NIHB), and also a part of WorkSafe BC Provider Network. Since opening we’ve had requests for Industrial Hearing Testing, and our office is able to provide a Certified Industrial Hearing Testing Facility. We have an Audiologist available to do any diagnostic tests that may be required. Our vision is to be known as the best provider of hearing products and services for ages 16 and over. Angela's Hearing Solutions is committed to partnering with clients to help them achieve the best possible hearing that can be attained. Our approach is "your hearing is my business" and we will provide a valuable service by identifying client needs and working together to find the best possible solution according to that of each individual. THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - In honour of Earth Day, this spring Northern Savings Credit Union (NSCU) invited its members to go paperless as part of a fundraising campaign. For every member that signed up for electronic statements between April 1 and May 15, NSCU committed to donating $5 to organizations in the communities it serves. More than $2,400 was collected on behalf of members throughout the campaign, with the funds being divided between the Haida Gwaii BC SPCA branch, the Prince Rupert Backcountry Society, Laskeek Bay Conservation Society and the Skeena Wild Conservation Trust. “Environmental sustainability is recognized in our governing policies and we are proud to be taking proactive steps in reducing our environmental footprint,” explained Sharon Stromdahl, interim CEO of NSCU. “Consumers have shifted towards a paperless statement environment as access to technology has vastly increased. With electronic statements, we can provide statements in a safe, convenient and environmentally-friendly way.”

Gordon Earl Minaker August 20, 1938 to June 20, 2015

Gordon Earl Minaker, long time Kitimat resident, passed away peacefully at Mountainview Lodge on June 20. He was 76 years old. Gordon was predeceased by his parents Glen and Edna and by his older brother Russell. He is lovingly remembered by his twin brothers Lloyd and Ron, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Gordon was born in Rosser, Manitoba on August 20, 1938. He was the second of four sons born to Glen and Edna Minaker. In 1948, the Minaker family left the farm in Rosser and moved to Chilliwack, BC. From there, in 1956, the Minaker family joined other pioneers who settled in Kitimat. Gordon followed in his dad’s footsteps by working in the construction field and was involved in the building of the Kitimat Smelter. Gordon worked in a variety of jobs throughout his life. In his later years he enjoyed having coffee with friends, especially at Pedro’s. Gordon had many friends and was often heard discussing community issues and politics. Many friends and family enjoyed the “Gordon Report with a nightly or weekly phone call describing these local events. Gordon loved listening to Johnny Cash for hours and hours on end and it brought him comfort in his final days. The Minaker Family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Mountainview Lodge and to Doctors Kay and Skully. There will be no service by request. Donations may be made in memory of Gordon to Mountainview Lodge.

Jubilee crown returns to Rupert Timberwolves By Kevin Campbell

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - The Prince Rupert Golf Club’s Men’s Jubilee crown is coming back to Prince Rupert for the first time in approximately seven years. Ian Robinson carded a three day, 54-hole total of 217 to win the overall low gross championship and winner’s title of the 2015 Men’s Jubilee on the weekend. Another Prince Rupert veteran claimed the overall low net title when Andrew Schaeffer, with a handicap of 16, shot a 203 net score. But coming down to the final holes on the back nine on Sunday, it was still anyone’s tournament to take between Robinson and Prince Rupert’s Brian Holkestad. “At the start of [Sunday], I had a one-shot lead and then by the end of the first nine [holes] today, he was up two on me,” said Robinson. “I knew he was going to keep playing good. He was playing solid, so I had to play as well as I could and try to catch him and I did somehow. I birdied [holes] 15 and 16 to get one up and parred the last two holes and just barely beat him by one.” Holkestad claimed the Championship Flight’s first low gross, finishing right behind Robinson with a score of 218, including eagling on three holes, once on each day. “It was pretty fun. It was a good match. It wasn’t like anyone had it won at any point in time, so we were both playing well, making a lot of putts and nobody gave anything to the other guy,” said Robinson. For Schaeffer, the Rupertite

KEVIN CAMPBELL / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

At left, that’s Ian Robinson and at right, that’s Andrew Schaeffer. was glad he kept his number of strokes to a minimum. “I played well. I kept the ball in play, which for me, you take penalty strokes and they add up quick and today I was just never in trouble,” he said. “I kept everything pars and bogeys – I didn’t take any big numbers. It was consistent. The first couple days, I had some nines and eights and after that I

was keeping it low. It makes it easy, it makes it fun.” Gorgeous sunny rays and no wind trouble graced the North Coast skies for the tournament, a nice change from the Ladies Jubilee, held earlier in June which saw torrential downpours rain on the golfers to go with strong, blustery winds. Along with the co-operative weather, the two winners

complimented the shape of the greens, an improvement from a couple months ago, when they were in rough shape. “It’s come a long way and it’s as good as it basically ever has been, in my opinion,” said Robinson. “I thought it was fantastic. So hopefully, [the out-of-towners] tell other people and it gets them out,” added Schaeffer. Fifty-five golfers entered the jubilee in total. The First Flight’s first low gross title went to Pierre Lafrance and Bummer Olmstead took the Second Flight’s first low gross. The Champ Flight’s second low gross went to Grant Oystensen, the First Flight’s second low gross was taken by Trevor Deschamp and Eric Hand claimed the Second Flight’s second low gross. Third low gross in the Championship Flight went to Dylan Kerbrat, while Sandy Anderson and Don Movold took third low gross in the First Flight and Second Flight respectively. Mark Bryant took the Championship Flight’s first low net, while Dylan Lawrence took the First Flight’s first low net and Ray Kierce claimed the Second Flight’s first low net. Second low net in the Champ Flight went to Greg Blair, Ross McNish took the title in the First Flight and the Second Flight’s second low net winner was Helder Marques. Derek Ridgeway took the Championship Flight’s third low net, Ron Miller grabbed it for the First Flight and the Second Flight’s Ralph Vankessel took third low net as well.

wrap up impressive first season By Matt Lowndes

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

LANGLEY - The Northwest Jr. Timberwolves Club Basketball season has come to an end. The Timberwolves, comprised of Grade 10 and 11 athletes from Terrace, Smithers, Prince Rupert, Hazelton and Port Simpson, finished their season with an 11 point loss to the Vancouver Panthers in the Championship game of the Basketball BC Club Provincial Championships two weekends ago at the Langley Events Centre. The Timberwolves finished their spring with an impressive overall record of seven wins and two losses. The Timberwolves advanced to the finals with a thrilling one point overtime victory over the North Vancouver Running Rebels. Caledonia’s Ryan Kunar made the game winning free throw with under a minute to play in the extra frame, and stifling team defence thwarted numerous opportunities for the Running Rebels to take the lead. Despite keeping the championship game close, the Timberwolves were unable to fend off a potent Panther’s shooting game that saw them hit five three-pointers in the second half to pull away with the victory. The game was highlighted by two Thunderous Slam Dunks by Timberwolves players Gabriel Johnson from Cal and Trent Monkman from Smithers, who cut to the basket and threw down a thunderous dunk over a Panther defender. “For a northern team to come together with limited practice time, and compete at the level that we competed in the Lower Mainland is a tremendous accomplishment. We have some tremendous talent in the Northwest. Every player bought into our team first philosophy and this translated to success on the court. I think it was a tremendous confidence builder for our athletes, as they now know that they can compete with some of the best in the province, and this experience can only help them as they move forward in their high school careers,” said coach Matt Lowndes about his team’s performance. Commenting on next season, coach Lowndes has already circled December 5 on the calendar, as his Smithers Gryphons will be traveling to Terrace to take on coach MacKay’s Caledonia Kermodes in the season opener. “It is going to be weird to start the Northwest High school season next year, as all of these players have bonded in a short period of time, and have had experiences that will hopefully stay with them for a lifetime. “One goal of our program was to give everyone a new perspective of the different programs in the Northwest as usually we are competing against each other. It was nice to put on the same uniform and work together. I think it is important to remember that as an isolated basketball region in this province, all of our programs need to work together to grow and build up the game within all of our communities. The stronger each program is, the better it is for all student athletes in this region. We want all of the Northwest programs to be successful. When we aren’t competing with each other, we cheer for each other.”
