SD5 board slams Ktunaxa reflect on inadequate funding future of Jumbo issue QAT’MUK BEFORE THE COURTS

Though the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort is currently at a standstill after a recent government decision, there is still a court case winding through an appeal process from the Ktunaxa Nation Council. The Environmental Assessment Certificate — a necessary approval needed for the resort proponent to start construction — has expired following an announcement from Environment Minister Mary Polak, who recently determined that the project is
not substantially started. However, running concurrently to the government’s actions on the Jumbo issue is the pending result of a court case brought forward by the Ktunaxa. The Ktunaxa are currently appealing a judicial review that went in favour of the provincial government, arguing that the approval by then-minister Steve Thompson [Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations] of a Master Development Agreement in 2012 infringed on their Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
“Our appeal was based on the fact that we felt the issue of our Charter right to freedom of religion was not taken into consideration when he made his decision,” said Kathyrn Teneese, chair of the Ktunaxa Nation Council. “So that’s what we were arguing at the B.C. Court of Appeal.” The Ktunaxa argued their appeal at the end of May this year after the judicial review went in favour of the provincial government in April 2014.

In a letter to the Ministry of Education, the SD5 board of education is decrying the lack of adequate funding for the district after submitting their budget to the province. With school district budgets sent in to the province—a legislated requirement—trustees are also forwarding an annual needs budget that demonstrates that they say the district must choose to not fund, underfund and/or cut in areas that do not benefit from austerity measures. Local officials pleaded their case in a letter written jointly by Frank Lento, SD5 board chair, Shelley Balfour, Cranbrook and District Teach-
ers’ Association and Debbie Thierren, District Parent Advisory Council. “Year over year, districts across the province have informed government that the funding provided is not adequate to even cover the cost of living increases,” stated the letter. “Inflationary costs alone equal over one million dollars in our district and increases to the cost of doing business—carbon offsets, MSP premiums increases, BC Hydro rate increases etc—remain unfunded by the government and contribute to the cuts our board must make each year.”

Local NEWS City of Cranbrook addresses Rotary Park concerns Arne Petryshen
Cranbrook city staff gave an update on work being done at Rotary Park, which followed a letter from Summit Community Services Society expressing concerns. The letter, dated May 11, 2015, noted the lack of washroom facilities during the winter months. CAO Wayne Staudt said that city staff is presently working with the Rotary Club on a design and budget for a proposed year-round washroom. The new washroom would include a working water fountain — something the letter writer also noted was missing. The preliminary budgets will likely be available in the next month or so. The letter also highlighted that tripping hazards remain where benches have been removed. Staudt said the old benches were removed because they were damaged beyond repair. The holes left behind from old benches are presently being filled with gravel to prevent tripping. “Public Works is working on replacing benches as budgets allow,” Staudt said. “Each bench costs $1,755 plus the concrete base.” He said the plan is to install two more this year, adding that Rotary has made inquiries on purchasing a few benches as well. The letter also noted that there are potential slipping hazards around the splash park. Staudt noted there are a few sprinkler control boxes around the splash park, and the main water control box for the splash pad. He said Public Works will look into “slippery when wet” stickers, but noted the boxes are required for the controls.

Preventing another Mt. Polley accident Bennett appoints Mining Code Review Committee to implement recommendations following last year’s tailings pond collapse B a r ry Co u lt e r
A committee has been put in place to help ensure accidents like the Mt. Polley disaster never happen again. On Wednesday, Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett on Monday appointed a Code Review Committee that will determine how best to implement the seven recommendations stemming from an Independent Expert Engineering Panel’s investigation into the Aug. 4, 2014, tailings pond breach at the Mount Polley Mine in Northwest B.C. Bennett, the MLA for Kootenay East, told the Townsman the committee appointment is another step in govern-
ment’s response to the Mt. Polley accident. “We have already had companies report to us on the condition of their tailings storage facilities (TSF) at every mine site in the province,” Bennett said. “We’ve already requested evidence from every company that has a TSF, as well as all the companies telling us about the soils under their foundations. This goes back to the independent panel’s report that it was some unknown, unstable clay beneath the foundation of the dam at Mt. Polley that caused the accident. “We’ve already announced that every mine site, every mining company that has a TSF
has to have an independent review panel of engineers reviewing their engineers’ work.” “The next step, Bennett said, is to review the mining code — a book of hundreds and hundreds of regulations that govern the design, construction, operation and closure of mines in the province. “This is something we do every five years — we were going to do it in 2015, but we delayed after Mt. Polley because we wanted to know the cause of the accident, and we wanted to make sure this code review was broad enough to allow us to implement the independent panel’s recommendations.” Addressing the inde-
pendent panel recommendations on tailings storage facilities is the first priority of the code review and will focus on the following three areas: • Implementing best available technology and best available practices, including using filtered tailings (dry stack) technology where appropriate. The panel also noted that there are circumstances where other technologies are more appropriate. • Enhance validation of safety and regulation of all phases of a tailings storage facility (TSF). • Improving Dam Safety Guidelines. The Code Review Committee will be

chaired by the Chief Inspector of Mines and includes an equal number of representatives nominated by First Nations, mine labour unions and industry. “These people were appointed by me as minister, but they were recommended to me,” Bennett said. “The union reps, for example, were recommended by the International Union of Operating Engineers and the United Steelworkers. The two First Nations reps were recommended by the First Nations Energy and Mining Council of Canada. And the two industry reps were recommended to us by the Mining Association of B.C.” The public will also have the opportunity during the code review to provide written submissions on implementing the independent panel’s recommendations to the Code Review Committee. The public submission
period will run from July 15 to Sept. 15, 2015. “Typically, when we do a code review, it takes about two years to do it,” Bennett said. “You come up with recommendations for change and then implement them. In this case, because of Mt. Polley, there is a need for government to act in a more expedited way. So we will have recommendations from the Code Review Committee in early 2016. And we will do our best to put those recommendations into law by mid-2016. “The Committee will continue to work on other aspects of the Code for about another year, and then make its final recommendations.” The size and scale of a Mount Polley tailings dam failure was unprecedented in B.C. “Prior to Mt. Polley, the mining industry in B.C. was considered to be as safe and reputable
as any mining industry anywhere in the world, and safer and more reputable than most,” Bennett said. “Frankly, when Mt. Polley happened, it shook the industry and government to its foundations, no pun intended. It caused everyone to take a step back and say ‘how could this happen here?’ Well, we’re answering that question, the independent panel answered the question. There were somewhat unstable materials that somebody missed when this dam was designed. Had we known about the unstable materials, the company could have easily constructed and maintained the dam differently, and we wouldn’t have had the accident. “What we’re doing now is answering the other part of the question, what can you do to make sure it never happens again?”

Last week, 50 Grade 8 students from Parkland Middle School pushed up their sleeves and pulled weeds for three hours at Elizabeth Lake, filling nearly 40 heavy-duty garbage bags. The weed pull was a special Student Action Project, organized as part of Columbia Basin Trust’s Know Your Watershed program. East Kootenay Invasive Plants Council summer students Hope and Blair educated the students about weed identification and pulling techniques, and provided the gloves, bags and tools. Some of the invasive weeds pulled by the Grade 8’s included yellow toadflax, dalmatian toadflax, burdock, thistle, knapweed, mullen and curled dock. “The coolest part of the weed pull was how keen the students were,” said Dave Quinn, Know Your Watershed Educator. “It is hard work pulling weeds in the hot sun, especially pulling plants like dock that have these huge roots, or spiky thistles, but the kids got right into it! Controlling weeds has been a huge challenge at Elizabeth Lake, but with efforts like this, the area has the best chance

The court case shouldn’t have an effect on the current status of the proposed project, now that it is determined to be not substantially started, according to Teneese. “While it’s around the same issue, it really has no connection to
the substantially-started issue, which is what the minister [Polak] made a decision on,” Teneese added. As it stands now, the ball is now in the court of the proponent to determine where the project goes. If the proponent wishes to move

forward with the development, they’ll have to redo the Environmental Assessment Certificate process. “We started the [appeal] process and I guess we’ll have to wait until it fully unfolds to see what happens,” said Teneese. “Hopefully, the substantially started issue has put the whole thing to bed, but again, that remains to be seen, because it’s now back in the hands of the proponent.” Teneese noted that the Ktunaxa are continuing to move forward with their Qat’muk Management Plan, which they created in 2010, that details their vision for the area. “We will be proceeding with that, wherein we are laying out what we deem to be the appropriate uses of the area and asking others, who are like-minded, who want to see the area stay in it’s present state, notwithstanding the fact that we know it’s not pristine, however it’s as close as it can get given it’s location, and we invite people to see the area,” Teneese said. “We’re not asking
Lake of the Hanging Glacier, with Jumbo Mountain just behind and to the right. people to stay away, we’re just asking people not to build anything there.” It will take roughly three to six months for the panel of three judges to render their decision on the Ktunaxa appeal. If the Ktunaxa are successful, Teneese is hopeful the issue will fade away. However, the province also has the option to take it to the Supreme Court of Canada, and vice versa

The City of Cranbrook’s primary Vactor truck went down and was in need of repairs earlier this month. The truck — which is used to remove blockages in the city’s storm and sewer system — suffered a bearing failure in the fan gear box on June 2. That resulted in the majority of the fan assembly having to be replaced. “There’s a repair of $35,000 that was unbudgeted to fix our Vactor truck, which is a key piece of equipment that we need to do our Public Works activities throughout the years,” Staudt said. “So we’ve moved ahead with that, and we’ll try to fund that out of the current year’s surplus.”
The city owns two Vactor trucks, but the unit is the primary one. The backup unit is 22 years old — the city considers it to be unreliable. The estimated cost is expected to be approximately $35,000. The emergency repair proceeded as per the city’s Purchasing Policy No. 40-501. The cost will be covered by current year surplus. Coun. Wesly Graham asked whether the city should just be advancing the purchase of a new Vactor truck, if the bills are going to keep coming in for this one. “Or is this kind of a — now it’s fixed it will be good forever?” Graham asked. Staudt said the truck
is approaching five or six years old. “So I’m hoping it will last,” he said. Charlotte Osborne, director of Finance and Computer Services, said there are plans to look at the purchase of a new truck in 2016 or 2017. “Then this older one would become the back up, because the one that’s currently the back up is no longer feasible as the backup,” Osborne said. “We do know that a major repair was a potential. The Vactor truck that is currently in the budget in a closer year was further out, but through discussions with public works they said ‘we’re anticipating large repairs, this cannot continue to be our primary Vactor truck.’”

lem Hospital. The 7-inch blade had struck the aorta, so surgeons had to remove two ribs and the breastplate to safely remove it. After the lengthy surgery, the victim woke up in the recovery room to the site of Averell Harriman. The governor of New York had not left his side since his first arrival at the hospital. The victim — Martin Luther King, Jr. — grabbed the governor’s hand and told him “everything is alright.” The two then joked about the dangers of book signings. The book King was promoting that day was ‘Stride Toward Freedom’ — his personal memoir of the 1956 Montgomery Bus Boycott. His first and very nearly his last effort in the publishing world, everything about this book had been difficult and distressing. After the success of the bus boycott, Harper & Rowe had offered King a $3,500 advance for a book about it. King accepted, but soon found that the editors at Harper & Rowe did not like anything he wrote. Every page he submitted was quickly returned with comments like “not intellectual enough,” “too dry,” and of course “too Negro.” Whole chapters were rejected for fear they may be contrived as communist in spirit. Most frustrating of all, was King’s phrase of “leader of the people.” Harper & Rowe demanded it be changed to “leader of HIS people,” for fear of alienating white readers. All these dictates made it next to impossible for King to write anything, and soon he missed deadline after deadline. His publishers demanded King give his advance to Hermine Popper — a ghost writer they were sending to help him. Popper formed a team with King and half-a-dozen of his closest friends and colleagues to produce a publishable book. ‘Stride Toward Freedom’ was finished in the summer of 1958, with King stating it was “the most difficult job I’ve ever encountered.” Buzz about the book
spread quickly, and at an unprecedented rate. The book hadn’t even been published when Harper and Rowe had to start a second printing. The Prime Minister of India was only one of King’s admirers from around the world who had contacted them, hoping for an inscribed copy. King would write only four more books before James Earl Ray succeeded where Izola Ware Carry failed. Born and raised in Georgia, Carry was a transient individual who suffered from severe mental illness. While the police charged her with attempted murder, the courts found her “deranged” and a “paranoid schizophrenic.” She was sent to the Matteawan State Hospital for the criminally insane. After 14 years there she was released to a series of residential group homes, and spent her last years in a nursing home. She died of natural causes only a few weeks ago. “I feel no ill will toward Mrs. Izola Curry,” King stated a month after his near fateful stabbing, “and know that thoughtful people will do all in their power to see she gets the help she apparently needs.” Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library
The letter also stated that the district has cut in 33 distinct areas of district operations in order to deliver a balanced budget, including a ‘high-needs’ area as part of the B.C. Education Plan.
“This government initiative, with a focus on ‘personalized learning’, requires districts to invest in and maintain current (and expensive) technologies and infrastructure in order to provide the meaningful and relevant experiences our learners require to
attain success within and beyond K-12,” states the letter. Lento notes that SD5 has had to cut $899,678 over two years as part of the provincial government’s demand to school districts to find $54 million in savings.

was on September 20th, 1958, when — after years of searching — Izola Ware Curry finally found the man who had destroyed her life. She found him in the back of Blumstein’s Department Store, on 125th Street in Harlem. He was seated at a table having a book signing — which Curry found somewhat ridiculous; Blumstein’s didn’t sell books. That didn’t seem to matter though, as a large crowd of people had formed a long line waiting to have their book signed by this firsttime author. Curry pushed her way to the front of the line, until she came face-to-face with the person responsible for all her troubles. For the past six years he had relentlessly stalked her, blackmailed her, and physically abused and tortured her. His ongoing harassment of her caused her to lose numerous jobs, as well as earn her a stack of eviction notices. Even the church she had attended all her life had asked her not to return. To add insult to injury, her tormenter — sitting calmly behind a small desk — gently smiled at her, and asked her name. She saw in his eyes that he had no recognition of her. Curry’s arm swung from beneath her blue raincoat at lightning-speed, her knife briefly flashing under the department store lights before she drove it into her tormenter’s heart. Chaos broke out. People shouted. Others screamed. A teenage girl close enough to the scene knocked Curry’s hand off of the knife handle, preventing her from pulling it out and plunging it in again. “I’m glad I done it!” Curry screeched between obscenities. Two policeman appeared and placed handcuffs on Curry just as she was reaching for the revolver she had hid in her bra. The victim remained surprisingly calm. “That’s alright,” he repeated to the people swarming around him. “Everything is going to be alright.” An ambulance showed up, and transported him to Har-

Where are you God: The Power of Lament
O
ne of the core spiritual elements of the Old Testament (OT) is a repeated lamentation over God’s absence. While it may be found in the New Testament (NT), this sense of having been abandoned by God is much more prevalent in the OT. Walter Brueggemann, one of the pre–eminent OT scholars of the 20th century, calls it “Israel’s counter testimony.” It is the dark side of Israel’s faith. Israel’s main testimony, found in the story from creation to exile (Genesis to 2 Kings), tells the story of God’s faithfulness to Israel and the requirement for Israel to live in obedience to God. The heart of this story reflects Israel’s faith that obedience to God leads to life and prosperity in the land, while disobedience leads to divine punishment and eventually exile. This story is neatly laid out in Deuteronomy 27–30, which ends with the declaration, “I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity” and ends with the exhortation to choose life. The same general idea is laid out in a more poetic form in Psalm 1: the righteous are “like trees planted by streams of water … [and] in all that they do, they prosper.” The wicked, on the other hand, “are like chaff that the wind blows away … [and] the way of the wicked will perish.” But there is another story in the OT which observes that the rules of the game aren’t quite so tidy. The boundaries between the righteous and wicked cannot be drawn quite so neatly. In faith, Israel laments the seeming absence of God when the rules don’t work out quite so precisely.
Psalm 73 notices that the wicked prosper all the time and that the righteous endure long days of suffering. Psalm 88 is a desperate cry to God for help, but God simply doesn’t show up. The Psalmist’s only companion is utter darkness. Psalm 89 in effect calls God a liar because God hasn’t kept the promise that David’s line would be on the throne of Israel forever. We find the same kind of counter testimony in Ecclesiastes and Job. The Teacher in Ecclesiastes is seriously depressed and not a little ticked off at how God runs the world. Day after day we go about our lives, and each day is like the one beRev. Yme fore it. We never have anyWoensdregt thing to show for it because at the end of the day, “you can’t take it with you.” Death cancels out all our achievements; “this is how God has set up the world, so don’t talk about blessings and curses, rewards and punishments.” Let’s not forget poor Job. His life is utterly obliterated because of a wager between God and the Satan. Three so– called friends sit with him, trying to convince him that he must have done something wrong, that “actions have consequences.” Job consistently maintains that he is innocent. “I don’t care what you say, I didn’t do anything to deserve this.” At the end of the story, God turns to Eliphaz (one of Job’s companions) and says, “My wrath is kindled against you and your two friends, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.” (Job 42:7) This counter testimony in the OT, this note of lament, deals with the world as it is. The world is not as it should be. We
know it. We see it all around us. The world is not a happy–clappy place where everything always works out for the best. The only time we find this in the NT is Jesus’ cry of abandonment from the cross. But even then, it is a citation of Psalm 22, one of those “where are you when we actually need you, O God?” kinds of psalms. The NT, it seems, has a more triumphalist tone. The NT writers tells us that in the gospel, we see God’s purposes for the world worked out in Jesus Christ, the suffering, executed, and raised messiah. If the NT were all that we could read, we’d be left with the sense that however difficult things may be at the moment, if we stick with it, then we will know that God is present with us even if we don’t feel it. The OT grapples more honestly with the dark night of the soul. It knows that there are times when God seems to be absent. We don’t walk around in a state of perpetual triumph and spiritual victory. There are also times when we feel abandoned, when we are filled with doubt. There are dark nights of the soul when our only companion seems to be darkness. Israel’s counter testimony tells us that this is normal and this is ok. Life is hard sometimes, and so we lament. Faith does not automatically make it easier. It may actually make it harder at times. Spiritual struggles are normal for Christians. They are not to be sought after, or romanticized, or ignored. They are normal, and it’s ok to wonder where God is at those times and to cry out in lament. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Letters to the Editor
Writing on the Wall
In Vaughn Palmer’s editorial, (“Back To Square One For Jumbo”, June 23, 2015) discussing the Minister of Environment, Mary Polak’s decision to cancel the Jumbo Resort proponents’ Environmental Certificate he closes his discussion with the following statement, “Would be investors take note.” I agree potential investors and developers should take note that when a project has 70-80 per cent of local residents of the East Kootenay opposed to it, the local Ktunaxa first nations are in a court battle to shut it down and the close by town of Invermere is on record as not supporting it. They should take note. If this was not enough opposition to the resort take into account there were no real financial backers only misguided political backers like MLA Bill Bennett who does not represent the riding of Columbia R.-Revelstoke. The fact that this whole development centered on glaciers(Jumbo and Farnham) that have been vastly affected and will continue to be affected in the future by climate change seems to be forgotten. Oh, and I forgot this development had very little to do with four season skiing and everything to do with recreational real estate.
The writing, regarding The Jumbo Resort has been on the wall for quite awhile now, but unfortunately it has taken a very very long time for this government to take note. Finally, it has made a positive step in the right direction. Blake Rawson Kimberley
Clocktower Square
Congratulations to city staff and the Downtown Business Association for their great work on revitalizing Cranbrook’s Clock Tower Square! The project was designed in 2013 with four objectives: • Create a safer walking surface. • Improve access for people with disabilities • Improve visibility for the businesses fronting the Square. • Create an attractive meeting space for residents and visitors Three design options were presented to the Downtown business Association and we chose to go with their preferred design, which I trust is the one that the City is now implementing. There are four bases ready for benches (as well as spaces for some additional
lighting and a tree), and coincidentally there are four locations at bus stops along 14th Avenue that have two benches each. One option would be to relocate these four “extra” benches to Clock Tower Square, which would save the project some money. Moving the benches would also create some spaces along 14th Avenue at the bus stops that could be filled in creative ways: Hold a 14th Avenue Art Contest and encourage our amazing local arts community to come up with public art for the spaces Put up small community information boards to keep residents informed Provide a planter box for flowers at each bus stop and invite some of the greenthumb neighbours to “adopt” a flower box and showcase their talents Install bicycle stands so citizens can bike and bus easily without having to ride their bikes up that challenging hill coming home! If you haven’t been downtown recently I’d encourage you to head down and have a look at Clock Tower Square. This is another welcoming space in Cranbrook that we can all be proud of ! The 2015 NHL Entry Draft might not be as anticipated in the East Kootenay as it was in 2014, but the Kootenay Ice still stand to be represented. The hype of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft hit close to home in the East Kootenay as Kootenay Ice captain and now franchise leading scorer Sam Reinhart was selected second overall by the Buffalo Sabres. In 2015, alternate captain Luke Philp heads up the draft day crowd for the Ice, ranked 172nd amongst North American skaters by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service (CSS). Philp, a 19-year-old native of Canmore, Alta., was passed over at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft -his first year of eligibility. After scoring a WHL
career high of 82 points in 71 games this past season, the 5-foot-10, 181-pound pivot is hoping the 2015 NHL Entry Draft doesn’t leave him disappointed yet again. “You try not to expect too much. You want to get picked always,” Philp said in April. “You can’t get too down on yourself. Last year, I was really disappointed I didn’t get picked. You’ve got to just let that fuel you to work even harder than you were before, to hopefully get picked in the future.” Even though he was passed over at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Philp still caught the eyes of hockey minds at the professional level, earning an invite to Toronto Maple Leafs rookie camp prior to the start of the WHL season.
Forward Jon Martin was also passed over in 2014 but found himself invited to Vancouver Canucks rookie camp in the fall. Outside of Philp and Martin, forward Zak Zborosky and defenceman Troy Murray had the attention of NHL scouts at times this past season. In mid-September, both Zborosky and Murray found their way onto the Central Scouting Service’s preliminary list of players to watch ahead of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. By the time the CSS released its mid-term rankings, Murray had fallen out of the picture and Zborosky ranked 97th amongst North American skaters. The final edition of the annual draft list did not in-
clude the Regina native. At the time the preliminary list was released, Dan Marr, NHL director of Central Scouting, said his team felt Zborosky was ready to break out offensively. While the 18-yearold right-winger tallied 18 goals, 22 assists and 40 points, all career highs, it likely wasn’t the breakout scouts were hoping for. With seven rounds of selections, there’s no telling when a team might call a player’s name. Though Philp stands as the likeliest to hear his name called sometime Saturday when the NHL conducts the second through seventh rounds of the draft, players like Martin, Murray or Zborosky could also be lucky enough to earn an op-
portunity from a pro club. In total, the 2014-15 edition of the Kootenay Ice features 15 players eligible for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Forwards Matt Alfaro, River Beattie, Ryan Chynoweth, Martin, Philp, Austin Wellsby and Zborosky all remain eligible. Defencemen Bryan Allbee, Lenny Hackman, Tyler King, Tanner Lishchynsky, Murray and Dylan Overdyk are also eligible. Finally, goaltenders Wyatt Hoflin and Keelan Williams are also draft eligible. The first round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft will be conducted Friday beginning at 5 p.m. MT, with round two getting underway Saturday at 8 a.m. MT.

Former Kootenay Ice captain Jarret Stoll has avoided jail time. According to a report from ESPN’s Katie Strang, Stoll has pleaded guilty to two misdemeanours stemming from his arrest in Las Vegas. On April 17, the twotime Stanley Cup champion was arrested after security guards at the MGM Grand’s Wet Republic pool discovered what was believed to be 3.3 grams of cocaine and several capsules of ecstasy in his pocket during a routine search. Following the arrest, the 33-yearold native of Melville, Sask., was charged with felony cocaine possession. Thursday morning, Stoll pled guilty to one count of provoking commission of breach of peach and one count of trespass. The felony cocaine possession charge was subsequently dropped. Had Stoll been convicted of the felony cocaine possession charge, he would have been looking at spending up to four years in prison, or at the very least, probation. According to Strang’s report, Stoll has 120 days to complete 32 hours of community service and is due back in court Aug. 27 to update his community service progress. The 6-foot-1 pivot was drafted by the WHL’s Edmonton Ice with the first-overall selection of the 19997
Jarret Stoll
WHL Bantam Draft. He went on to play 245 with the Edmonton and Kootenay Ice, amassing 124 goals and 286 points. Stoll was the Kootenay Ice franchise leader in scoring until he was surpassed by Sam Reinhart during the 2014-15 WHL campaign. He also captained the Kootenay Ice to its only Memorial Cup championship during the 2001-02 season. Stoll has seen his fair share of success over the course of his major junior and professional hockey career. In addition to the 2002 Memorial Cup title, he won WHL championships with the Ice in 2000 and 2002, a World Junior bronze medal (2001), a World Junior silver medal (2002) and two Stanley Cup championships with the Los Angeles Kings (2012, 2014). A veteran of 792 NHL games, Stoll is an unrestricted free agent after spending the previous seven seasons with the Los Angeles Kings. He made $3.25 million during the 2014-15 NHL season. Kootenay Ice history at the NHL Entry Draft Taylor Rocc a
A total of 32 Kootenay Ice players have heard their names called at NHL Entry Drafts over the years. Captain Sam Reinhart became the highest-selected player in team history when the Buffalo Sabres picked him second overall in 2014. The 2014 NHL Entry Draft also saw the highest number of Ice players picked in any one draft. A total of four players were selected: Reinhart, Rinat Valiev, Jaedon Descheneau and Tanner Faith. Only 1998, 2008 and 2012 NHL Entry Drafts have seen no Kootenay Ice players selected. The first round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft is slated to begin at 5 p.m. (MT) Friday with rounds two through seven beginning at 8 a.m (MT) Saturday

McDavid shrugs off hype heading into 2015 NHL Entry Draft Tim Reynolds Associated Press
SUNRISE, Fla. - For Connor McDavid, this is only the beginning. And he’s eager to see what comes next. There’s no mystery, no drama, no guessing about what will happen when the Edmonton Oilers make the first pick in Friday night’s NHL draft. It’s going to be McDavid’s moment, as hockey’s latest heir apparent - a 6-foot-1 centre who’s already been compared to the game’s royalty takes his first steps on the road to what many
1997 NHL Entry Draft
expect will be a rapid rise to professional stardom. “You only go through the draft process once and it’s something you want to savour,” McDavid said. “It’s something I’ve been looking forward to for a long, long time. (You’re) going to be so happy when you’re drafted, but that’s when the hard work starts.” He’s going to a place that saw the Stanley Cup get hoisted five times in seven seasons from 1984 through 1990, with no titles since and not even as much as a playoff appearance since 2006.
And the Oilers haven’t exactly cashed in on having the top pick; McDavid will be their fourth No. 1 overall selection in the last six years. But he’s supposed to be different. He gets compared to Wayne Gretzky, Sidney Crosby even LeBron James, the thinking he’s a young guy who can come in and be a leader right away and not buckle under the burden of gargantuan expectations. “Time will tell, but at this age, yes, probably,” Florida GM Dale Tallon said when asked if Mc-
David is the best prospect since Crosby. Hobey Baker winner Jack Eichel from Boston University will surely be the No. 2 pick, going to the Buffalo Sabres. Many in Buffalo were likely disappointed when the Sabres didn’t win the draft lottery and the chance to grab McDavid. Eichel said he’s looking forward to reminding them that they’re getting a pretty good player. It raised some eyebrows when word leaked that he told the Sabres he’d be better than McDavid, but there’s obviously no
bad blood between the two - they were inseparable while appearing with other top prospects at a Miami Marlins game earlier this week. “I’m pretty confident in my own abilities,” Eichel said. “I know everyone’s making a big deal that I said a comment like that. I don’t think it was meant at all about ... that wasn’t me comparing myself to Connor or anything like that. It was more me thinking that I’m the best player in the draft. It’s more just confidence in my own self.”

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My father-in-law “Ron” is having an affair. At first I was not sure, but now I have proof, and my husband has seen his father with this woman, as well. Even my in-laws have told us that they only coexist with one another. I am not sure if my husband’s mother knows of the affair. She might. Since we saw my father-in-law with this woman, things have not been the same between him and my husband. My mother-in-law is not the same, either. One minute she is fine and the next she is not. We will be leaving soon for a joint family vacation and I am not sure I want to be there. I don’t even want to bring my children to their home to visit. My father-in-law has cheated before. I think my mother-in-law should divorce him and my husband agrees. He said his parents never seemed compatible when he was growing up. It seemed as though they were forced to be together because of his sister and him. I want to tell my mother-in-law and give her my evidence. My husband says to leave it alone. He says he needs time. But I feel his mother needs to know now, the sooner the better. I don’t want to be the one who knew all about his affair and did nothing. -- I am Hurting, Too Dear Hurting: This is truly not your business, and forcing your motherin-law to confront her husband’s behavior (of which she is undoubtedly aware) may not be in her best interest. Sometimes, a spouse chooses to ignore evidence in order to maintain the status quo. It is not up to you to decide whether a divorce is better for her. What you can do, however, is tell your father-in-law what you know. Anyone who cheats is exposing a spouse to sexually transmitted diseases, and this is something the spouse should know. Dear Annie: I live in a retirement community. You would think a great many residents would have either spent time in the service or know someone who has. It is so difficult for me to drive through the streets and see only a few homes with flags out on Memorial Day or Flag Day. You can buy flags at the dollar store, for heaven’s sake. When I think of all the young women and men who have sacrificed so much for our country, it is hard to understand. I hope people get this message, and when July Fourth comes around, we will see flags at every home. Thank you. -- J. Dear J.: What an excellent idea. Homes used to come with flag holders attached near a door or window so people could hang large flags on poles for these occasions. But it is certainly easy enough to pick up a small flag on a stick and put it on your lawn or by the curb. It doesn’t matter if you are “red state” or “blue state.” We all love our country and appreciate our freedoms. If you don’t own a flag, please get one. And if you have one, please display it properly on these national holidays. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Google’s pod-like, self-driving cars invade public streets as project shifts into next phase
250-426-5201 ext 202
250-427-5333
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - The latest models of Google’s self-driving cars are now cruising the streets near the Internet company’s Silicon Valley headquarters in a test of how they work around other vehicles driven by people. It’s the first time that the pod-like, two-seat vehicles have been allowed on public roads since Google unveiled the next generation of its self-driving fleet more than a year ago. Google had previously installed its robotic driving technology in Lexus vehicles in the first few years of its ambitious project before developing the smaller prototype. The new models are designed to work without a steering wheel or brake pedal, although the vehicles that began driving Thursday in Mountain View, California, are equipped with these features. A human will also ride in the cars to take control in emergencies.
Fridge stench sends 11 to hospital; chemical residue suspected Associated Press
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Officials say a smelly refrigerator at the University of Kentucky sent nearly a dozen people to the hospital. Multiple news outlets report that workers smelled a strong odour coming from the fridge when they came to work Wednesday at the Dimock Animal Pathology building. They opened the fridge to an overpowering smell. University officials say movers had brought the fridge there from another campus building Tuesday evening but didn’t detect anything amiss. Fire battalion chief Joe Best says people reported minor irritation to the skin or eyes and some nausea. Eleven were taken to the hospital. Firefighters evacuated the building and kept people away as a precaution. University spokeswoman Kathy Jones says officials believe the odour was caused by a chemical residue left by something that had been inside the refrigerator. The building was reopened Wednesday afternoon.
Homeless B.C. man who turned in $2,000 turns down $5,000 in donations Canadian Press
VICTORIA - A homeless man who turned in more than $2,000 he found on a suburban Victoria street wants thousands of dollars in donations collected for him across Canada to go towards helping others in need. The mystery man in his 60s has never spoken publicly since bringing the money to the West Shore RCMP detachment two weeks ago, and police say the only wish he has is help in finding a job. Const. Alex Berube says the man from Langford didn’t want the money but asked instead how it could be donated to a society called Our Place and others that provide food for people. Berube says investigators asked the man to think about his decision overnight but he stuck to his wish for a job, while acknowledging the generosity. Mike Kelly, of the media website Victoria Buzz, started the fundraising effort for the man and says nearly $5,000 was donated and that he will do everything he can to help the man find work. Police say the person who lost the $2,000 has claimed the money after answering a series of questions that verified his identity.
