Dan Cebuliak has been busy converting a residential backyard into a garden in the heart of Port Alberni. But his idea is so much more than growing a few vegetables. The importance of Cebuliak’s Project
Abundance “is to show how much abundance of vegetables a garden can produce,” he says. “This year I think I’ll be hard-pressed for 3,000 pounds. Next year I think I can get 8–10,000 pounds” out of a single backyard. Food is only one part of Cebuliak’s equation: the other

So many people have contacted the Alberni Valley Bulldogs wanting to say goodbye to retiring player Tyler Povelofskie that the B.C. Hockey League team has come up with a couple of ways people can wish Povelofskie well. The Bulldogs will have a greeting card available at their front office at the AV Multiplex for members of the community to come by and sign, on Tuesday, June 30 and Thursday, July 2 from 1–5 p.m. on both days. People can also bring their own card or message to the Canada Day parade and hand it to one of the Bulldogs’ members who will be with the team float in the parade (which starts at 10 a.m. on 10th Avenue). “This is just one example of the connection that the Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ players and staff have with our fans and the Alberni Valley community,” assistant coach Adam Hayduk said.

Valley SENIORS
Our writer: Valley Seniors is a monthly feature compiled by Orlando Delano and featuring residents living in Port Alberni seniors complexes.
John Shaw: a happy Heritage Place tenant “Moving to Heritage Place was one of the best and wisest move I ever made, and I love it!”, says John Shaw. He couldn’t stop smiling as we began this interview. The 85-year-old tenant of Heritage Place is currently the longest living resident of this local assisted living home and was among the very first to move in almost a decade ago. “When this place was being built, I immediately considered it to be an ideal home for me right next door to Echo Village, where my wife Phillis used to live. – John Shaw Place has been gratifying and meaningful, and he is eager to share the many services he and other tenants get here. “For starters, each tenant gets an excellent suite; care workers to see to your care needs, if required; maintenance personnel to make sure everything is in working order; your meals are served by excellent staff; and our activities
co-ordinator, who is ‘out of this world’! “We also have a real life chef/manager/ supervisor/ ‘jack of all trades’, who makes our lives blessed.” Shaw was born in Doncaster, England in 1930. He was the fourth child in a family of six, raised by his mother, as his father was in military hospital for most of his upbringing. Young John and his family moved to Coventry just in time to get bombed out of their home in 1939. Later on, Shaw served in the army for some years and spent two years in Scotland. In 1952, he met his wife Phillis on a bus

Five years after the birth of their only child Susan, the Shaws moved to Canada in 1965 and bought a cottage in Sioux Lookout, Northern Ontario. In 1972 they moved to Port Alberni and decided that this would be their permanent home. John became sick in 1975 from a brain tumour. At this point, Phillis left her teaching position to take care of him until his recovery in 1982. Life came back to normal after that, but things turned around when Phillis was diagnosed with Alzheimer Disease. She was placed in Echo Village in January 2000 where she lived until her passing in 2011, seven days after their 57th wedding anniversary. “We had a very happy life together,” says Shaw. “While I was sick, without

If anybody wants to learn about Heritage Place and its services, there is no better spokesperson than John Shaw. He is seen regularly taking part at events and socializing with other tenants and visitors. His cordial approach and good sense of humour makes him a great host and ambassador. “All in all, I think we are extremely fortunate to live here,” he says. “I know I am.”
Correction In the May 26 Valley Seniors, an unfortunate editing error put Sylvia Springer at Abbeyfield House. She is in fact president of Heritage Place. The error was ours, not Orlando Delano’s, and we regret any discord this may have caused. — Susie Quinn, editor, Alberni Valley News

◆ COVER STORY
Sweat equity to be rewarded with food from the garden From / A1
Cebuliak kicked off Project Abundance after a resident—who wanted to remain anonymous—came forward and offered his yard. The man had gardened at one time but was no longer able to keep up with it, and thought it would be a good way for Cebuliak to start. There were already 22 garden boxes built, but they were hiding among three-foothigh weeds. Cebuliak started clearing out the weeds in midMay, and by June had already planted in most of the boxes and come up with a plan for more. “I hope to be up to 34 boxes by next spring to get everything planted,” he said. He has planted beans, zucchini, cucumbers, kohlrabi, peas, lettuce, radishes, spinach and carrots and has hothouse tomatoes growing in the greenhouse. The carport will be converted to a potting shed, and Cebuliak will put up a second
WISHlist ◆ DAN CEBULIAK of Citizens for a Local Economy is trying to keep his costs down for Project Abundance, and has come up with a wish list. If anyone has any of these items that they are willing to donate, please e-mail cfle@outlook. com. ◆ 2x6 and 2x4 wood ◆ Nails/ screws ◆ PVC gutters (not aluminum) ◆ Good soil ◆ compost ◆ use of a Bobcat on occasion ◆ central storage yard ◆ more yards for planting.
greenhouse. He has six rain barrels to hook up. He spent $20 on seeds, and borrowed more from the seed library at the Port Alberni public library. The CFLE will hold a fundraiser to help with costs. The project has “very little cash outlay,” Cebuliak said.
“We’re creating what we can with what we’ve got.” Cebuliak said each backyard garden could use about three people working it. “If you could get 1,000 yards, and get three people per yard, that’s 3,000 people working right there,” he said. Estimating each yard’s yield to be about 6,000 pounds, and keeping in mind those who work the yard are entitled to some of the yield, “that’s six million pounds of groceries,” he said. Cebuliak has already heard from another neighbour near the first yard who has offered his backyard for a Project Abundance garden. Cebuliak hopes to start converting it later this summer, and is looking for more participants in the program. He can be reached via e-mail at cfle@outlook.com.
A spot of tea with Jane Austen JULY 3–4: | Centennial Belles are serving up high tea at the Rollin Art Centre. Jane Austen died in 1817, but her Georgian era novels like Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility are still popular more than 200 years later. The fascination extends to blockbuster movies of her novels, and a burgeoning Jane Austen movement that Tricia Knight and the Centennial Belles are making popular here in the Alberni Valley. The Belles are hosting two Jane Austen teas this weekend: Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4 from 1–3 p.m. each day at the Rollin Art Centre. “These festivals are all over the world. People do travel the world to go to them. She was an author of her time,” says Knight. Six of Austen’s books—which were popular for their social commentary of the day—have been

made into modern movies. Victoria and Duncan have both hosted successful Jane Austen festivals, and Knight said the teas are a prelude to Port Alberni’s inaugural festival being planned for 2016. Tea, sandwiches, savories and dessert will be served, there will be demonstrations of English country dancing and a fashion show of regency costumes. Also a draw for people who show up in their own regency wear. Costumes are as easy to make as taking a trip to a local thrift shop, says Knight. “You basically need a full-length, empire waist gown with short or long sleeves or elbow-length sleeves. It cannot be sleeveless,” she said. “Just a bonnet or a turban on your head, or a ribbon in your hair” for adornment. Men wishing to dress to accompany their partners can pair a vest and high-necked white collared shirt, and add a crevatte (an old-fashioned tie). Tickets are $10 for kids, $15 for adults and available at the Rollin Art Centre.

Congratulations Bill & Agnes Hannay celebrating their 60th Wedding Anniversary on July 1st! DEATHS
DEATHS
DINO JOSEPH GRIGOLETTO July 23, 1933 – June 21, 2015
On Sunday, June 21, 2015, surrounded by his loving family, Dino said his final goodbye. Dino was born in 1933 in Trail, BC but spent most of his years in Port Alberni raising his family. He retired from the Alberni Plywood Plant in 1991 and moved to Qualicum Beach to enjoy his retirement. Dino loved fishing, camping, golfing, and cheering on his Boston Bruins and, more recently, the Vancouver Canucks. Time spent with family and friends was always very special to him. He leaves his loving wife of 58 years, Edna; daughter, Lisa; sons, David and Neil (Tiana); his beloved grandchildren, Breanne, Jason, Dezi, and Rio; sister, Gina; brother, Angelo (Cathy) and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dino was predeceased by his parents, Maria and Giuseppe; brother, Joseph and sister, Elda. A special thank you to friends and family who came by faithfully and brought sunshine to his days and to the 5th floor staff at NRGH, and the staff at Arrowsmith Lodge for their gentle caring. A Celebration of Dino’s Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, July 6th at Yates Funeral Chapel, 1000 Allsbrook Road in Parksville, BC. In lieu of flowers, please consider honouring Dino by making a donation in his memory to the Alzheimer Society of BC, 300 – 828 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5Z 1E2. To send a condolence to the family please visit www.yatesfuneral.ca YATES FUNERAL SERVICE & CREMATORIUM (250-248-5859) in care of arrangements.
