A Rossland-Trail spin on a classic love story BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff

“Parting is such sweet sorrow” following a performance by the Gold Fever Follies. Bold, witty and based on historical Rossland and Trail political relations, this year's “Summer is Coming” promises plenty of laughs and great songs in a story told through the eyes of two young lovers. Opening today, the show runs twice daily to Aug. 22 at the Rossland Miner’s Hall. Written by Brian Turner, a Trail born, Warfield raised and Rossland schooled script writer, the play gives a Kootenay twist to the Shakespearean classic tale of Romeo and Juliet. Set in Rossland in 1903, the cities are at each others throats because of politics and past grievances, explains Amy King, the show's assistant music

director, accompanist and actor. Instead of the Capulets and Montagues feuding as in the original, Rossland and Trail fill those roles, she said. Aaron James portrays Julian (Romeo) a Rossland volunteer firefighter who falls head over heels for a girl from Trail named Romola Mezzonotti, played by Alexandra Willett. After the two characters meet and it's love at first sight, the question becomes, “Can the two live in peace even though they are from different worlds?” “Come and find out,” said King. “Also, see how well you know the story of Romeo and Juliet (because) every character has a connection to a specific character in the classic Shakespearean tale.” This is King's second year being part of the Gold Fever Follies, now in its

29th season. “I decided to try my luck a year ago and got in,” said the recent Canadian College of Performing Arts graduate. Originally from Pense, Sask., King was cast as a romantic lead in the 2014 “Off the Rails” production which brought her to the West Kootenay for the first time. “We would take cast trips to Nelson, Castlegar, Trail, Montrose and nearby lakes and rivers,” she said. “While staying in Rossland I fell in love with this part of the country.” King portrays the Velvet Queen, the proprietor of the Velvet Hotel and head of the Garter Girls in “Summer is Coming,” as well as chorus/narrator. “Behind the scenes I play the piano for the show, stage manage and run lights at the same time,” she said. “It's a job that is quite a challenge, but is such a thrill to do.”

With sunshine in the forecast and birthday cakes iced red and white, local communities are set to wish the country a Happy 148th Birthday on Wednesday. Canada Day kicks off with a $5 pancake and sausage breakfast at the Kiwanis Beaver Creek Park at 8 a.m. followed by barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs plus fun for the family from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Live entertainment, a craft fair and community group displays run throughout the day alongside games and activities for children. The national anthem will be sung at noon with free cake to follow. Free bus service with wheelchair accessibility is available to all with downtown Trail runs leaving Pine and Farwell Street at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Pick up and drop off sites are in Shavers Bench at Seventh Ave. and McBride; Highway Drive and the city works yard; and Old Waneta Road in front of Maglio Building Supplies. The bus leaves the park at 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m. Fruitvale begins its celebrations in Haines Park at noon with firemen grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, old fashioned games for the kids, volunteer appreciation award presentations and music by Cathy Kolar. If a dip in the pool sounds good, then the Warfield Centennial Pool will be open all day with Canada Day celebrations from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Staff has planned games and activities for all ages. No injuries, fuel spilled in Saturday crash Rossland Hill closed for eight hours BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff

A large fuel spill from a rolled semi forced an eight-hour closure of the highway between Warfield and Rossland on Saturday. The 911 came into Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue just after 10:30 a.m. that day with reports of a high mechanism rollover incident on Highway 3B near the gravel pit just up the hill from Warfield. City going ahead with repairs to Miner’s Hall The Rossland News The City of Rossland has announced it is finalizing plans for the major renovation of the historic Miner’s Hall. The hall, which is an important community treasure, is in serious need of significant repairs. The City has $335,000 in a reserve fund for this project. The Rossland Council for Arts and Culture (RCAC) has been awarded a grant of $350,000 from the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) to restore the heritage site and increase its longevity and functionality. Both the city and the RCAC have applied for a number of additional grants to cover the significant costs involved as this project is estimated to cost over one million dollars. The new renovations will include the roof, siding, painting, and windows, as well as creating a completely new community space on the fourth floor. The RCAC is actively seeking additional funding to restore the façade to its original grandeur and reconfigure the exterior entry plaza. The construction site at Miner’s Hall presents unique challenges because of the steep hillside location. With no accessible outdoor working space, managing dust and debris control, worker coordination, erecting scaffolding, and materials and tool storage is extremely complex. Removing old construction material will also be challenging and the scale is unknown at this time.

The Miner’s Hall is heavily used by the city’s recreation programs, the Pottery Society, RCAC concerts, dances, fundraisers, Ilo’s Playschool, the Gold Fever Follies, and many others. These programs will be temporarily impacted by this renovation. After carefully considering users’ health and safety, the liability issues, and the significant costs required to maintain occupancy during construction, the city has decided to close the building during construction. The project is estimated to start February 1, 2016 and be completed by December 2016. City staff will work closely with key hall user groups to find alternate venues. While the city understands the short-term inconvenience to users, in the long-term, the Miner’s Hall will be greatly improved and offer much more to the community. This work is essential to maintain this heritage site and restore it to its original glory.

Saturday morning’s truck crash on the Rossland Hill left a semi and trailer on its side while fuel spilled from the tanks. The highway was closed for eight hours while crews cleaned up the accident site and the fuel spill. No injuries were reported.

Crews help contain diesel fuel spill FROM PAGE 1 destined for a Trail grocery store when the vehicle went on its side and slid between 100 feet to 120 feet down the hill, Fire Chief Terry Martin told the Trail Times Monday morning. By the time the truck came to a stop, all four lanes of traffic were blocked and fuel was pouring onto the highway, said Martin. The driver was able to exit the semi’s cab with minor injuries, and was later transported to the hospital by BC Ambulance. The major concern for rescue teams at that point was containment of diesel fuel that was freely escaping one of the truck’s tanks.

“It was coming out of the actual fuel cap,” explained Martin. “Unfortunately the one tank emptied while the truck was laying on its side. And the brakes were really hot so we were concerned with that ignition source.” He said a quantity of fuel entered the ditch and saturated soil prior to the crews’ arrival. Once on scene, firefighters from Trail and Rossland utilized Hazmat materials such as booms and pads for fuel absorption and they created makeshift dams from dirt to ebb the flow away from the roadside. “The fuel didn’t get into the waterway which goes down to Trail Creek, “he confirmed. “That was our concern but it

didn’t get that far. But they will have to do some remediation work in the ditch where the fuel soaked in.” Once Emcon Services and the RCMP Commercial Vehicle Inspector team (CVI) arrived, fire crews remained on standby at the site until after 6 p.m. “It was very fortunate all around, the driver wasn’t hurt and nobody got hurt driving up the hill,” said Martin. “Unfortunately, it put a lot of people in a bad way having to go around through Castlegar with the highway shut down for that length of time,” he added. “But it was all required.” Police continue to investigate the accident and await the CVI report before determining possible charges.

many “firsts” in the city this Canada Day. Celebrations have moved from Pioneer Park to the spacious grounds of the Rossland Museum & Discovery Centre at the junction of Highway 3B and Highway 22. Taking over July 1 festivities from the nowfolded Rossland Chamber of Commerce was a natural transition that fit the museum’s mandate, says director Joelle Hodgins.

“The museum is a great place to hold a Canada Day event, and our property is huge,” she said. “So we really wanted to run the event.” Live entertainment including the Golden City Fiddlers begin at noon, the Gold Fever Follies give a 20-minute show teaser at 1 p.m. and the Foggy Goggle Boys finish the day from 2-5 p.m. The beer garden runs until 5 p.m., and through-

out the day barbecue and kettle corn will be served and children’s activities like face painting and crafts are planned. Grade 8 student Molly Jamin, 12, will sing O Canada at 1:30 p.m. followed by Rossland Mayor Kathy Moore cutting cake. Jamin is already a seasoned performer, having sang the national anthem for roller derby games and taken part in various talent shows.

But this is her first time singing the song in front of a crowd for Canada Day. She admitted to having a bit of the jitters, summarizing the feeling with a word her friend suggested. “I’m nervicited (nervous and excited),” she giggled. Ontario duo didn’t know what the ‘fuss’ was about after week missing in B.C.

THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - The father of an Ontario man who emerged from a southern British Columbia forest after being lost for seven days says his son isn’t sure why he’s getting so much attention. North Bay couple Rick Moynan and Lynne Carmody, who are both in their 60s, walked out of the forest virtually unscathed as crews were thinking about ending an extensive search on Sunday. Bob Moynan said he spoke with his son on the phone hours after he was told that the search might be suspended. “He says, ‘We didn’t know what all the fuss was about,”’ said Moynan from his home near North Bay. “I said, ‘Well Rick, think about it. You were due back for dinner on Monday night at five o’clock, and you’re seven days

late.”’ Moynan and Carmody were on a day hike near a lodge where they were staying in Cathedral Provincial Park when they got lost last Monday. They managed to survive by staying close to water and building themselves a shelter. The couple was exhausted and bruised when they left their shelter and stumbled upon rescuers after spotting a helicopter. They were taken to hospital for a precautionary assessment. Moynan said his son has a fair amount of outdoors experience, and Carmody’s now-deceased longtime husband worked in search and rescue. He said the ordeal was “terrible” for his family, but he never gave up hope. “We are people of faith and we were praying a lot,” Moynan said.

“It’s almost a miracle that they could survive seven days and be able to be healthy enough to have been able to walk out. So we’re just terribly, terribly grateful that it’s over, and we’ve all learned something.” He said the couple was on their way back on Ontario on Monday. Frank Caruso, a filmmaker in Toronto who is originally from North Bay, has known Moynan for 45 years and said he can sleep soundly now that his friend is safe. He said he was expecting the worst when a week went by and more than 300 searchers still weren’t able to find the couple. “I kept thinking, how far could he possibly walk?” Caruso said. “But it’s all good. It ended well, that’s all that matters.”

members on Sunday. He was 67. The band posted a statement on its Facebook page saying Squire “peacefully passed away” Saturday in Phoenix, where he lived. No further details about the death

Provincial Bus company at centre of serious highway crash to be audited by province

THE CANADIAN PRESS MERRITT, B.C. The British Columbia government will audit a bus company involved in a serious weekend collision in the province’s Central Interior that sent more than three dozen people to hospitals across the region. The province’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said in an emailed statement that its investigation of Universal Coach Lines will include a

review of the company’s drivers. “An audit is standard for operators involved in this type of incident,” read the ministry statement. Police say that shortly before 10 a.m. on Saturday a tour bus rammed into a car and a tow truck parked on the shoulder of the Coquihalla Highway, about 40 kilometres south of Merritt. The collision left 38 people injured, including two who were airlifted to hos-

pital in serious condition. RCMP Cpl. Chris Newel said charges are expected but that it could be weeks before any are laid while an investigation continues into the cause of the crash. “There are still lots of questions to be answered,” said Newel on Sunday. By Black Press VICTORIA – Candidates for a council seat in a small community should be able to spend no more than $10,000 to run for mayor and $5,000 for a council or school board seat, says a legislature committee on local election financing. For larger communities, a population-based formula would limit a mayoral campaign for a city of 150,000 residents to just under $90,000, with other municipal candidates limited to half that. The formula would limit a candidate for mayor of Victoria, population 80,000, to about $36,000, while Surrey’s population of 470,000 would mean a cap of $180,000 to run for mayor. The small-town limits apply to communities up to 10,000 residents. For larger ones, mayoral candidates would be limited to $1 per capita for the first 15,000 people, 55 cents per capita up to 150,000, 60 cents per capita for 150,000 to 200,000 and only 15 cents for communities larger than that. Fraser-Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart, who chaired the committee as it toured the province, said the limits are aimed to make running for local government “accessible and affordable,” while recognizing the vast

B.C. still the Wild West for elections

T

he man behind “HarperPAC” says it lived and died in a few days to make a point about third-party advertising in Canadian politics. When it launched, I wondered why he would choose such a deliberately provocative name. No, not “Harper,” but the acronym for “Political Action Committee,” which has come to symbolize the financial excesses of U.S. politics. HarperPAC ran one radio ad, accusing Liberal leader Justin Trudeau of blaming voters for his declining popularity, and suggesting that Trudeau’s “months of mistakes” are a likelier cause. No kidding. HarperPAC spokesman Stephen Taylor, who like Stephen Harper before him has worked for the National Citizens’ Coalition, announced the end of the project last week. “We have contributed to a new discussion about political financing in a fixed

election era that is critical to our democracy,” Taylor said. “We note that this discussion only occurred once a right-wing analog of the left’s PAC-style efforts emerged on the scene.” Indeed, it was when HarperPAC emerged that muttering began about “dark money” in Canadian politics. Unifor, Anti-Conservative front LeadNow and the many faces of the Tides Foundation somehow failed to ignite much discussion in the Canadian media. Taylor launched the bid in response to the emergence of “Engage Canada,” a union-financed action committee that he said was part of a broader effort by the left to oust the Conservatives. Engage Canada portrays itself as a brave alternative to shadowy right-wing groups such as Working Canadians, which has also run pro-Conservative ads. Engage Canada’s latest

ad plays on the union movement’s cherished “inequality” theme, selecting statistics to portray the wealthy as making out far better than the rest of us in Harper’s Canada. (The notion that “inequality” can and should be fixed by ever-higher taxes on “the rich” staggers on, zombielike, as if capitalism was the cause of poverty.) Two recent developments have led to all this. Scheduled elections every four years have finally taken effect at the federal level, after a series of minority governments.

And courts have repeatedly struck down efforts to restrict third-party spending in the so-called “precampaign” period as an unwarranted restriction on free speech. The B.C. Liberal government tried and failed several times to restrict third party spending, largely in response to the milliondollar tirades of the teachers’ union. Former attorney general Wally Oppal used to warn about American-style influence by wealthy interest groups targeting scheduled elections. Their strategy was not so much to keep corporate money out of B.C. politics as to keep it flowing through the B.C. Liberal Party. This spring the B.C. Liberal majority passed Bill 20, the Election Amendment Act. Not only did this recognize the freedom of outsiders to weigh in on elections, it also did away with pre-campaign restrictions on registered

political parties and candidates. NDP MLA Leonard Krog warned that this sets the stage for “some mad Wild West show,” with politicians so desperate to raise money they start looking for the B.C. equivalent of renting out the Lincoln bedroom in the White House. The big difference between the pre-campaign ads for this fall’s federal election and the next provincial vote in 2017 is that corporate and union donations to parties and candidates have been eliminated at the federal level. That means more money available for third-party campaigns, but it seems to be fairly well distributed between the two sides, the Conservatives and everybody else. Here in the Wild West, nothing’s going to change as long as the B.C. Liberals are in the saddle. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

NBC fires Trump after comments

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - NBC said Monday that it is ending its business relationship with mogul and GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump because of comments he made about Mexican immigrants during the announcement of his campaign. NBC said it would no longer air the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, which had been a joint venture between the company and Trump. Miss USA has aired on NBC since 2003 and this year’s edition was set for July 12; NBC said it hasn’t been determined what will air in its place. The network said that it has already begun exploring ways to air future seasons of the reality series “Celebrity Apprentice” without Trump as host. Reality show producer Mark Burnett continues to work on that show. “The Apprentice,” which Trump also hosted and does not feature celebrities, is on hiatus. “At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values,” NBC said in a statement. Trump attributed NBC’s decision to a clash in view points on immigration, saying his views were strong and NBC’s “very weak.” He said he anticipated losing the business relationship and that he’s not apologizing for his statements because they “were correct.” “Whatever they want to do is OK with me,” Trump told reporters in Chicago after a campaign speech to civic leaders. He said he’d consider suing, as he plans to do with Univision which announced last week it would not air either of the two pageants.

With a federal election on the horizon this coming October, and the NDP riding high in the polls, I think we can certainly expect these attacks to intensify in the months ahead. It is refreshing and hopeful to see that a different world is possible. The voters of Alberta have shown us the way. So, let us stay the course and get on track to elect a federal government in October that will advocate for us instead of against us and stands a chance of replacing Stephen Harper. An editorial from the Toronto Star Politicians, employers, teachers, economists and bureaucrats all agree that education is the key to lifting people up, improving their financial prospects, narrowing the gap between rich and poor and boosting economic growth. Regrettably, this almost universal consensus is at odds with the facts. Rather than being the solution to rising inequality, education may worsen the problem, say two Canadian economists in a surprising study released last week. “Education and training policy is no silver bullet,” warn David Green of the University of British Columbia and Kelly Foley of the University of Saskatchewan. Pouring billions of dollars into university education – as Ottawa and the provinces are doing – delivers the greatest benefit to middle-and upperincome students. Investing in apprenticeship programs and skills training doesn’t level the playing field because female participation is low (9.7 per cent), the drop-out rate is high

essential in most workplaces, then stalled. Rather than hiring university-educated workers, employers could adopt new technologies. Rather than staying in school, young men could get high-paying jobs on Alberta’s oil rigs. “Increased educational spending, especially at the university level, should not be counted on as a central policy for reducing income inequality,” they caution. Politically, this advice comes at an awkward time for all three party leaders. Stephen Harper touts apprenticeship training as a “key provider of the vital skills and knowledge necessary to power and grow the Canadian economy.” Justin Trudeau’s plan to bolster the middle class is built on raising the postsecondary graduation rate to 70 per cent. Tom Mulcair says university “is more important than ever in this interconnected world.” The easy response would be to brush off the inconvenient report. The smart response would be to look at the evidence and adjust policies to fit the facts.

Education may not reduce inequality (43 per cent), and students from low-income families often emerge with heavy debt loads. The authors don’t object to all education spending. Investments in early learning targeted at children from lowincome households make sense as an equalizer, they acknowledge. So does increased income support for parents of schoolaged youngsters. But overall, they caution, “the forces that are driving Canadian wages – like technological change and the resource boom – would not be offset by simply increasing the education level of the workforce.” The pair reached these sobering conclusions after an exhaustive examination of hiring trends, employment levels, earnings, and differences in pay levels for graduates from high school, college and trade programs, university and postgraduate courses over the past 33 years. Church bells chimed, heart chakras were recited, gongs were rung and shofars were trumpeted across the Kootenays Sunday as churches, faith-based groups and climate activists joined together for a global chorus demanding climate action. The cross-community event comes following the publication of Pope Francis’ recent encyclical Laudato Si (Praise Be), which urges the world to treat the earth as “a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms and embraces us.” The controversial document, which was published in May, has inspired millions across the world while simultaneously drawing criticism from those uncomfortable with the Pope’s stance. But in Nelson, the reception has been warm. “This sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her. We have come to see ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will,” Francis wrote. “The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symp-

church steps. Burgess said though the Catholic Church is leading the way, many other faith-based organizations are following suit. Other West Kootenay institutions involved in the celebration included Trail United Church, Castlegar United Church, Beaver Valley United Church and Sacred Heart Parish. “The Catholic Church has already had this on their radar, so the discussion has already been taking

place, but in going around to the other churches I’ve seen people are really on board to take climate action locally,” said Burgess. She said though churches and climate activists may be seen as strange bedfellows, the faithful were more enthusiastic than she expected. “They were saying ‘now is the time we have to do this’, and they were pleased it was coming through the church as a messenger.”

Revelstoke council agreed to ask BC Hydro to reconvene a committee to oversee usage of the Columbia River Flats. Council was faced with two requests at its meeting on Tuesday. One was to ask BC Hydro for funding for an enforcement officer for the area. The other was to have them reconvene the Upper

After some discussion, they opted to go with the latter. “If we can get this committee re-convened, maybe these issues will resolve themselves,” said councillor Scott Duke, who was sitting in the mayor’s chair in Mark McKee’s absence. “It may take longer than we think, but at least they’re getting looked at.”

By Times Staff The BCHL unveiled its 2015-16 schedule and the Trail Smoke Eaters are hoping some key stretches at home might be the push it needs to make the playoffs. Trail’s 58-game schedule kicks off Sept. 11 in Vernon with the Smokies’ home opener the next night, Sept. 12, when the Vernon Vipers return the visit. Each team plays 58 games this season. With the Wenatchee Wild joining the BCHL, there are now 17 teams and there will be 493 total games on the 2015-16 calendar. Some Smokie dates to note include the Showcase event in Chilliwack Sept. 24 to 27 where Trail will play Prince George and the expansion Wenatchee Wild. The Smokies will head south of the border for a regularseason game for the first time in franchise history on Nov. 27 when they face the Wild. Wenatchee travels to Trail on Dec. 5. The Smokies won 12 of its 19 games on home ice last season making November and February crucial home stretches for Trail’s fortunes in the coming season. November begins with five of six games at the Cominco Arena before the club heads out on a five-game road trip. February could prove even more pivotal as Trail plays six of its final nine games at home. The final game of the season will be a rematch of the season opener as Vernon comes to the Cominco Arena to wrap up the regular schedule. While the majority of the team’s games are on the weekend, the Smokies have eight Tuesday night games, three at home and five on the road. Trail has three home games on Wednesdays and one on a Thursday. The playoffs are scheduled to start on March 4, 2016. The league is playing a full interlock schedule, meaning each team will host every other team and also visit every other team. This will be done once each with out-of-division teams while in-division rivals will meet multiple times home and away.

McDavid dons number ‘97’ as Oilers grab coveted young star

THE CANADIAN PRESS SUNRISE, Fla. - The time between the NHL draft lottery and Friday added up to the longest 69 days of Connor McDavid’s life. Waiting the final few minutes before getting drafted felt like an eternity, too. “They had to introduce everyone and all the teams and the roll call, it just felt like it was going by so slowly,” McDavid said. “All I wanted to do was just have that pick called.” At 7:18 p.m. Edmonton Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli made the announcement that was more than two months in the making. Like any other pick, Chiarelli selected Connor McDavid of the Erie Otters. But this wasn’t any other pick.

McDavid is considered hockey’s “Next One” in the lineage of Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby, and now he begins the Oilers chapter of his career. “It’s an exciting time to be an Oiler and I know the fans are excited, and they should be,” McDavid said. “Now that it’s finally happened and I’m an Edmonton Oiler, I couldn’t be more proud.” The Newmarket, Ont., native called the experience of being selected better than he expected. Anxiety more than nerves marked the night. During the day, McDavid was at ease with a nice breakfast with his parents and even some jet-skiing. When it was finally his time to get up from his seat, the 18-year-

old finally felt a sense of relief. Wearing a baby blue tie, McDavid took off his suit jacket, strode onto the stage and first shook commissioner Gary Bettman’s hand as fans cheered and thanked Chiarelli for taking him. “That was an easy one,” Chiarelli said. McDavid put on the Oilers’ brand-new WHA-inspired orange jersey with his trademark No. 97 on the back and shoulders. While acknowledging that it’s a big jump from the Ontario Hockey League to playing against men, the humble superstar added the caveat that he has to work to make the team. That won’t be an issue, as McDavid joins the core of Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. “Welcome to Edmonton, Connor,” Hall tweeted. “Don’t mess up everything we’ve built the last 5 years! #FutureIsBright” The Oilers haven’t made the playoffs since 2006 but do have a bright future with McDavid. Chiarelli said Friday morning he has continually reminded himself since April that he needed

to temper expectations for the phenom. “He’s such a good player, so you’re going to hear me temper expectations for a long time,” Chiarelli said. “He’s going to have his ups and downs. He’s a terrific player, he’s going to really help our franchise when he gets up and running.” McDavid knows the pressure and what to expect. But rather than temper expectations, he wants to raise them. “I think my expectations of myself exceed any of those that are put on me,” he said. “if I’m meeting my expectations, chances are I’ll meet your guys.”’ The reality is McDavid immediately became the face of the Oilers’ franchise.

Sports Another part of the province’s solution is to introduce hatcheryraised kokanee fry to the lake from outside sources if the numbers are still down in September. There was some disagreement at the May meeting about where those fry should be introduced. Local resident Harvey Andrusak, a retired regional fisheries biologist and retired director of fisheries for the province as well as being a member of the BC Wildlife Federation, thinks all of the fry should all be introduced to the Meadow Creek spawning channel because of its proven effectiveness. “We know that at Meadow Creek the survival rate is 50 per cent, egg to fry,” he says. “In the south arm it is two to five per cent.” Andrusak said the province wants to introduce some of the fry into other creeks in the south arm of the lake. No one from the ministry was available to comment on this.

Recent changes to fishery regulations in Kootenay Lake are a result of public activism, says Kerry Reed, a Kootenay Lake fishing guide. “Public pressure has got the ministry acting on this,” he says. He’s talking about the collapse in the numbers of kokanee in Kootenay Lake over the last couple of years, and the pressure that has been put on the government by groups like the BC Wildlife Federation, which sounded the alarm last winter with a letter to the minister of environment demanding urgent action. The West Arm Outdoors Club called it the worst fisheries crisis on Kootenay

result, kokanee numbers have dropped drastically in the last couple of years, so trout have less to eat and are therefore fewer and smaller. (This dynamic exists in the main lake but not in the west arm which has separate population dynamics and is not in trouble.) The Gerrard trout fishery is an important part of the economy of Kootenay Lake communities. In April, the province responded to public pressure by reducing the catch limit on kokanee to zero, and increasing the limit on Gerrard trout to 4, in an attempt to balance things out by decreasing predator numbers and giving the prey a chance.

Lake in over 70 years. As a testament to the level of public alarm about the fishery, 300 people turned up to a public meeting in February in Balfour, and 200 to another in May. The meetings were hosted by the Balfour Business and Historical Association. Government fish biologists attended, made presentations, and answered questions. The subject of discussion was the outof-balance predatorprey relationships in the lake. Gerrard and bull trout numbers have increased rapidly in recent years and by 2012 showed unprecedented numbers. There were so many that they depleted the stocks of kokanee, their main food source. As a

THE CANADIAN PRESS SUDBURY, Ont. - “There’s no better place right now, anywhere, to shoot a TV show.” Is TV producer Mark Montefiore talking about Hollywood, New York, Vancouver or Toronto? Not even close. Montefiore, who runs New Metric Media with Patrick O’Sullivan, is talking about Sudbury, Ont. “You can’t beat it anywhere,” says Montefiore of the Nickel City, which might just earn the nickname Hollywood (Further) North. Montefiore makes the comments on a farm just outside of Sudbury, where an episode of “Letterkenny” is being filmed. The comedy, co-created by and starring Jared Keeso (“19-2”), is a spin-off from the web series “Letterkenny Problems,” which has drawn over 10 million views so far on YouTube. Coming to CraveTV and The Comedy Network in 2016, “Letterkenny” is one of several productions taking place in Sudbury this summer. Sophie Tweed-Simmons - daughter of KISS rocker Gene Simmons and Newfoundland native and actress Shannon Tweed - just spent a week in Sudbury filming the movie “Country Crush.” She plays a country singer in the musical written by Toronto director Andrew Cymek. U.S. production companies have also discovered Nickel City. Hallmark, which orders 30 original TV-movies a year for its U.S.-based cable channels, is currently in town shooting “Lead with Your Heart” starring William Baldwin. Also shooting in Sudbury this summer is “Stepchild.” The mystery-thriller stars Lauren Holly (“Motive”) and Sarah Fisher (“Degrassi”). American-born Holly’s change in citizenship several years ago makes this a 100% Canadian cast and crew. That’s an important factor in drawing production to this northern Ontario city, which has a population over 160,000. If they qualify, production companies shooting in Sudbury can tap into generous provincial and federal tax credits. Sweetening the deal is the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, which supports film and TV production in Sudbury. Factor in the slumping Canadian dollar, no city filming permit fees and reasonably-priced amenities, and Sudbury, as Montefiore says, is a producer’s dream city “unless you happen to hate mosquitoes.”

Teddy bear no MONday & Movies match for dinosaurs MONDAY EVENING

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - A foul-mouthed Teddy bear is no match for a pack of dinosaurs. Seth MacFarlane’s “Ted 2” opened far under expectations with $32.9 million, according to Rentrak estimates Sunday, ceding the top two spots to holdovers “Jurassic World” and “Inside Out.” While $32.9 million is a solid opening for an R-rated comedy, bigger things were expected from “Ted 2,” which cost a reported $68 million to produce. The Universal Pictures sequel was expected to earn somewhere in the $50 million range going into its debut weekend, thanks to the recordsetting precedent of the first film, which earned $54.4 million in 2012. In addition to mediocre reviews, perhaps the initial intrigue around a raunchy stuffed animal has worn off a bit. “It’s hard to maintain that hyper level of excitement once people have seen the talking Teddy bear,” Rentrak’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian said. “In comedy, it’s about inventiveness, newness and the shock value of something original.” “Jurassic World,” also a Universal film, narrowly held the top spot for the third weekend in a row with a mighty $54.2 million, pushing it past the $500 million mark domestically - only the fifth film to do so in history. Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out,” meanwhile, finished at a close No. 2, earning $52.1 million only a 42 per cent drop from its first weekend in theatres. “Max,” the other new opener, brought in a modest but expected $12.2 million to finish fourth. Warner Bros. is distributing the PG-rated MGM movie about a PTSD-afflicted military dog who goes to live with his handler’s family. The film, which cost under $20 million to produce, is performing especially well in the South, the Southeast and the Midwest, according to Warner Bros.’ domestic distribution EVP Jeff Goldstein. Overall, the box office is still booming, up 7 per cent from last year. With “Magic Mike XXL” and “Terminator Genisys” set to open Wednesday in advance of the holiday weekend, things are only going to heat up.

My friend and I sat behind her and her friend, and when we found out that our school was playing hers the following week, we had a lot of fun banter back and forth and we eventually got their phone numbers. One of the girls made a great impression on me. I was so taken with her that I called her every day. I was too young to drive, so for three years, I would walk 14 miles on the weekends to see her. She graduated ahead of me and went to work. I graduated the following May and we were married in June. When we said, “Till death we do part,” we meant it. We were married 67 years. She died in April of last year. Dear Annie: I have two sons, both married with children, living in two different states. For several years, my older son “John” has refused to talk to his brother, “Teddy.” I don’t know why, except that John’s wife initiated it. My husband and my sons and their families were at a wedding a few years ago. John’s wife refused to acknowledge Teddy’s family. She stayed for all of the wedding festivities, but walked away whenever Teddy, his wife or children came near. AIR CADETS VISIT FAIRCHILD AFBUSAF PHOTO

At the beginning of June cadets from 232 Oliver Bighorn, 531 City of Trail and 841 Grand Forks Boundary visited Fairchild Air Force Base near Spokane Washington. The tour began with a mission briefing from Col. Brian McDaniel, 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander, and continued with a tour of a KC-135 Stratotanker static display. Additionally, the cadets interacted with base firefighters, observing their mission firsthand. Cadets have now completed their training for the year and will start a new training year in September. Over the summer, selected cadets will be attending training courses at Cadet Training Centres located in Vernon, Victoria and Comox, as well as other locations across the country.

THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Victor Surerus says the $2,700 he paid for his first cellphone 30 years ago was worth every penny. It was July 1985 and Surerus says he needed the phone to help run his business as a travelling funeral director out of Peterborough, Ont. The phone attached to an aerial in his car and came with its own carrying bag. He says his contract with Bell made him the first cellphone customer in Canada, and that honour didn’t come cheap. In those early years, his annual bills amounted to roughly $10,000. “This way you had the freedom of doing things and you weren’t tied down,” he says now from his home in Roseneath, Ont. “The price was high to pay for it, but it was worth it.” Cellphones debuted in Canada with a call between Art Eggleton and Jean Drapeau, then the mayors of Toronto and Montreal respectively, on July 1, 1985. The regional monopolies that dominated the telephone industry in the early 1980s were concerned that mobile phones would disrupt their grip on nearly every aspect of the market. Francis Fox, then the minister of communication in Brian Mulroney’s cabinet, says the

phone companies would defend their turf by saying their industry was heavily regulated and the CRTC was there to protect the consumer. “Their great line was always, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,”’ he says. Shrugging off pressure from the Reagan administration to choose a bid from an American company, Fox and his team awarded the rights to the first private cellphone network to an upstart company that later became one of the three dominant players in Canada’s wireless sector: Rogers. “Obviously we thought that it would lead to the usual benefits of greater competition, which meant innovation, which meant new products, and which meant lower prices for the consumer,” Fox said. Fox says the recent quarrels between the federal government and Rogers, Telus, and Bell over competition are echoes of the arguments he heard 30 years ago involving the landline monopolies. “What goes around comes around,” he said. Rogers Wireless executive vice-president Raj Doshi joined the company in 1989, when it was still CanTel AT&T and mobile telephones were still a luxury item. Doshi has the original Cantel ad from January 1985 announcing “the end of the

line for the telephone” framed in his office as a reminder that back then, competition was less important than explaining why people needed to spend thousands of dollars on a cellphone. “When you talk about competitive intensity, it was very much around getting people aware of the proposition versus the pure competitive intensity between the two of us,” he said. “The market growth potential was basically the whole of the Canadian population.” Wade Oosterman, now president of Bell Mobility, remembers it differently. In the mid1980s he worked with George Cope, now Bell’s CEO, getting Clearnet Communications Inc. off the ground, which was later bought by Telus. “It was competitive right from the get-go,” he said. “The cost of building out Canada is extraordinarily high: big land mass, relatively few people. When you’re spending that kind of money on deploying your network, every single subscriber really, really counts.” The high price of cellphones eventually fell as technology advanced, networks matured. “Canada and everybody who played a role in it should be quite proud of the state of the wireless industry in Canada today and the benefit it confers on consumers and businesses alike,” Oosterman said.
