Donation takes Multiplex fundraising committee closer to goal STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

The announcement last week of another major donation to the Multiplex Redevelopment Project marked a significant step toward the project fundraising committee’s $2 million goal. The Town of Sylvan Lake announced on June 9 that Redcore, a Sylvan Lakebased company specializing in oilfield construction, donated $250,000 to the project, and in turn will receive naming rights to one of the NexSource Centre’s ice surfaces. The donation now takes fundraising to about 83 per cent of its $2 million target, and momentum is now in full swing, according to fundraising committee co-

chair Amy Komarniski. “Things are kind of rolling again now that there’s some groundwork being done and there are crews on site,” she said. “It’s brought it back into the public’s awareness that this is happening.” Of the project’s $33,550,000 budget — which was recently adjusted following a value engineering exercise — the fundraising committee was tasked with raising $2 million. Now nearing that goal, Komarniski sees no reason why it can’t only be met in the near future, but also exceeded. “We have not changed the goal for fundraising, although the budget has increased significantly,” she said. “That being said, the opportunity for fundraising and sponsorship is far more than the $2 million goal. We

hope to far exceed that, and there’s capacity there to do that.” Donations like the one made last week are an indication of the community’s solid support of the project, she added. “(The $2 million target) has gone from being a very lofty goal to being more than attainable, and that really is because of the response of the business community and the residents in town who have so solidly supported this project.” Komarniski said fundraisers are aiming to reach their $2 million goal at some point this year. Further information on the project and its fundraising and sponsorship opportunities is available online at www.nexsourcecentre.ca.

A shift in thinking on seniors’ care issues is taking place across the country. Government leaders are taking notice. The opportunity to provide cutting edge seniors’ care has never been more within reach. Worldwide, there is a movement to take better care of aging adults, and this is reflected in exciting technology, design and conceptual communities which flip the notion of what it is to age on its head. Seniors’ issues include more than just better healthcare coverage. They’re about more than beds for long-term care, more money for careproviders and the obvious need for updating older seniors’ facilities with sprinklers and other mobility-related accommodations so that people who don’t move as easily as they once did. They’re also about more than providing inhome supports and retrofits to allow seniors to “age-in-place.” Overdue conversation Those of us in the industry who are committed to providing quality seniors’ housing and care — many of whom also deal with the reality of aging parents — believe there is a long overdue conversation that Canadians should be having with their families. It’s also a conversation our

governments should be having with every single one of us, because most of us will live longer than generations past and therefore will need greater supports. These discussions should be based on having all of the options and information available for our aging seniors. Those should include the more appropriate goal of “aging in the right place.” When most people think of seniors’ care, they skip a step or two. They might think resentfully of the hospital bed being taken up by a senior who is waiting for appropriate supports to be able to go home or to some draconian long-term care institution. Thinking about end-of-life quickly moves us to think of something else, and so we cling to the notion of staying in the family home as the best place to be. This may not be true for all. Unfortunately, statistics and surveys describe a sometimes different reality, where seniors living alone wait for the kids to call, become isolated, depressed and under-nourished. For many elderly, living the dream of aging-in-place can instead mean their world becomes a seniors’ Bermuda triangle: moving alone from the bedroom to the fridge, the TV and back. The home that once worked for the family may not exactly be fulfilling or suitable as we age. Most people’s notions of seniors’ care facilities are outdated. These outdated notions may also

not reflect the value of the supports that are available in congregate living. Not one-stop-fits-all Seniors’ housing options are no longer just one-stop-fits-all. The move to ‘supportive living,’ for example, can offer greater safety, more balanced meals, increased access to home care, and engagement with a vital social community. Eventually, when the time is right and when it’s needed, there is also full support available in the senior housing sector. All of these may be more finely tuned, responsive, efficient, cost effective and, most importantly, appropriate housing options for seniors than staying in the family home. An industry of professionals are organized, armed with research, prepared and excited to assist in providing better housing and care for aging Canadians. Seniors’ issues may not be the squeaky wheel that drives the revenue of our economy. If not supported, however, it will drive costs. For the growing number of seniors and for those with an aging family member, we need to keep the foot on the pedal. REMEMBER YOUR ORIGINAL CALL Events in one’s life or circumstances of everyday experiences may blur or stifle visions and missions if care is not taken. Zeal and focus needed to execute assignments may be weakened by unnecessary distractions, obstacles, or too much comfort. This was the situation that the early followers of Jesus Christ encountered within the first few years of their existence. They were contented with breaking of bread and sharing everything they had with the less privileged among them. They were complacent and relaxed in their comfort zone. Soon, disaffection was expressed by the Hellenists on the modalities for distributing daily food, which eventually resulted in the ordination of the first deacons for service among the brethren, (Acts 6:1-7). At this point, the early Christians seemed to have forgotten or neglected the injunction of Christ “Go, therefore, make disciples of all nation; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”, (Mt. 28:19). In order to forestall further derailment from their original mission and call (Acts 1:5-8), God allowed the first persecution of Christians to begin under the watch of Saul of Tarsus. “That day a bitter persecution started against the church in

Jerusalem, and everyone except the apostles scattered to the country districts of Judea and Samaria”, (Acts 8:1). All the believers carried the good news to every part of the world they travelled to because of persecution, thus, they were pushed out from their comfort zone. They did not deny Christ because of the hardship they were encountering, instead, they continued to express the marvellous deeds of the Lord. Philip went to Samaria, and preached to the Ethiopian eunuch, who eventually was the first baptized Christian from Africa (Acts 8:26-40). Our life circumstances may change, job may change, health situations may change, family situations may change, relationships may change, financial situations may change, but it may be for some purpose. God may be speaking to us in the midst of those vicissitudes of life. We may never comprehend why certain things happen in our lives unless we make out time to relax and reflect on our vision and original call. This summer is a great opportunity to have quiet time as we enjoy nature. Fr. Gabriel Udeh Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Sylvan Lake

Administrative staff have been appointed for Sylvan Lake’s new Kindergarten-to-Grade 8 school set to open in the fall of 2016. Chinook’s Edge School Division recently named Trevor Sanche as principal of the yet-unnamed school, and Alexandra Lambert as vice principal. The school will be located on Beacon Hill and have capacity for 500 students. Both teachers said they are excited about starting their new positions, and both envision an educational atmosphere where collaborative teaching is the main focus. As such, teaching practices and education quality are improved, said Sanche. “Our highest leverage strategy in improving teaching practice is the collaborative approach where teachers are working together to plan and improve their practice with regards to how they teach and how children learn,” he said.

“All the teachers and staff will have to work together to find the best research and let that drive our practice.” Alexandra Lambert Lambert has the same point of view and said that everyone needs to work together toward the same goal. She said the school’s atmosphere needs to be learningfocused. “All the teachers and staff will have to work together to find the best research and let that drive our practice,” Lambert said. Sanche lives in the town’s surrounding area and has 23 years of teaching experience, with about 15 of those years spent in administrative positions. He currently teaches Grade 6 at Penhold School. He describes himself as being very people-oriented, and has a strong belief in teamwork. “I believe in building strong teams where everyone is valued, including children and parents,” he said. He added he is excited to be a part of the new school and take it forward into the future. “It will be exciting to come in at ground level, and not just help out in the building of a new school, but think through the vision of what we could do with the school,” he said. Lambert, a Sylvan Lake resident, has been a teacher for seven years, and currently teaches science at HJ Cody School. Being the vice principal for the new school will be Lambert’s first administrative position. She described her new role as being a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” “It’s a beautiful school that’s being built with the most current research in mind in terms of how children learn best,” she said. “I am in the field of education because I love children, education and learning.”

Town seeking residents’ input on important projects The Town of Sylvan Lake is inviting residents to provide input for two important ongoing projects. A Land Use Bylaw (LUB) review is currently underway, and residents are being asked to provide input through an online survey. All land within Sylvan Lake is regulated through the use and development of the LUB. The LUB is also used when implementing policies of various plans, including the Sylvan Lake Municipal Development Plan, Area Redevelopment Plans and Area Structure Plans. Questions on the survey are divided into sections such as residential and commercial and industrial. Topics centre on anything from secondary suites and backyard hen keeping to electronic signage and the presence of brew pubs in town. A second online survey seeks Sylvan Lake residents’

input on the Town’s Transportation Master Plan. The plan will eventually result in a document that will provide guidelines for the future development of transportation networks in town. The plan is being created to ensure preparation for the town’s 30,000 population anticipated by 2039. The five-minute survey seeks Sylvan Lake residents’ thoughts on existing transportation networks and what they’d like to see added in the future. It also ask questions pertaining to residents’ current travel patterns and frequently visited destinations. The LUB survey and the Transportation Master Plan survey are both accessible on the Town’s webpage (sylvanlake.ca) under the ‘What’s Happening’ link. Further details on both projects is available at sylvanlake.ca/projects.

Town launches idle-free initiative The Town of Sylvan Lake earlier this week announced the launch of Breathe Easy — an idle-free initiative resulting from a partnership with the Parkland Airshed Management Zone (PAMZ). According to Town staff, Sylvan Lake residents idle their vehicles for an average time of eight minutes, whether they’re picking someone up, entering a store, or letting a vehicle cool down or warm up.

The Breathe Easy initiative aims to change that and educate town residents on the potential health risks arising from vehicle idling. Of the Sylvan Lake resident who took part in a recent survey, 67 per cent noted pollution and poor air quality as their primary concern with vehicle idling, 53 per cent cited environmental impact, and 48 per cent said health and wellbeing. As part of the initiative,

town residents are encouraged to go online and find out the effects of vehicle idling, as well as how they can play a role in minimizing it. Information is available at sylvanlake.ca/ programming/breatheasy. Water restrictions relaxed With local water reservoirs now back to an adequate level, water usage restrictions put in place by the Town last week have been relaxed. The Town’s regular water conservation policy is now back in effect, with an odd/even

system that sees building numbers correspond with days on which outside water may be used (odd-numbered buildings on odd-numbered days, even-numbered buildings on even-numbered days). Outside water use between

noon and 7 p.m. is prohibited on any day of the week. The policy includes exceptions for hand watering, which may be carried out on gardens and flowers on any day of the week, and new sod, which may be watered daily for a maximum of six weeks, but not within the prohibited hours.

To assist in conservation efforts, the Town recommends making use of rain barrels to help collect rain water that can be reused, taking shorter show-

ers and washing laundry and dishes only when loads are at full capacity. The Town on Monday said its staff along with members of

Municipal Enforcement would keep a close eye on the community in the near future to ensure the policy’s regulations were being met. - FULLARTON

First steps taken in construction of new lighthouse Last Friday marked a significant step toward the appearance of a new, yet nostalgically-familiar landmark in Sylvan Lake with the installation of support piles for the new Sylvan Lake Lighthouse. Nilsson Contracting of Pigeon Lake installed eight support piles at the lighthouse’s construction site on the north side of the Marina. The milestone marked a major milestone for the Lighthouse Project, following “months of planning and engineering,” according to Jack Van Delden of the Sylvan Lake Rotary Club, which, with support from the Town of Sylvan Lake, is spearheading the project. The project is being funded through municipal and provincial government grants,

as well as donations and sponsorships from individuals and businesses from within the community. A personalized brick program has also contributed funds, and will continue for several weeks longer. Through it, bricks can be purchased in a variety of denominations, and personalized with names and messages. More information on the fundraiser is available by contacting Susan Samson at 403887-3387 or at susamson56@gmail.com. Construction on the actual lighthouse will take place this summer. The lighthouse will sit in the publicly-accessible Lighthouse Park, which will also feature sitting and viewing areas and a trail. - FULLARTON

Motor vehicle thefts on the rise Motor vehicle theft rates in Sylvan Lake more than doubled between 2010 and 2014, according to Sylvan Lake RCMP, who last week released crime statistics comparing crime in the two years. Statistics show vehicle thefts sat at 31 in 2010, and increased to 76 in 2014. They, along with theft under $5,000 — which increased to 294 from 255 in the same period of time — grew more significantly than any other crime. “These are both crimes that the public can assist the police in reducing,” said Sylvan Lake RCMP Sgt. Jeff McBeth. “Ensure you are not leaving vehicles or shed and garage doors unlocked, and never leave your vehicle running unattended, or leave valuables in the vehicle.” “It’s unfortunate, but criminals are constantly on the lookout for these easy targets, and they can be in your vehicle and gone again in moments.” The Sylvan Lake RCMP became part of a regional Priority Crimes Task Force in October 2014. Since

then, the Task Force’s participating detachments have increased communication with the public regarding area criminal activity.

“It’s unfortunate, but criminals are constantly on the lookout for these easy targets, and they can be in your vehicle and gone again in moments.” Sgt. Jeff McBeth The increased presence of such dialogue, according to Sylvan Lake RCMP, often leads people to believe crime is on the rise. Statistics comparing crime in 2010 and 2014 were released last week in an

effort to shed some light on areas of both growth and decline. Areas explored included break-and-enter (43 in 2010, 46 in 2014), theft over $5,000 (8 in 2010, 11 in 2014), mischief to property (257 in 2010, 271 in 2014), uttering threats (36 in 2010, 47 in 2014), arson (5 in 2010, 0 in 2014) and Criminal Code traffic offences (195 in 2010, 141 in 2014). According to the Sylvan Lake RCMP, much public interest has been generated through the Task Force’s many recent success stories, in which a number of prolific offenders have been apprehended. Members of the public are encouraged to be equally as vigilant, and to ensure their vehicles and belongings remain inaccessible to criminals. Other participating detachments in the Task Force include Blackfalds, Innisfail and Red Deer. Together, Task Force members aim to reduce criminal activity to ensure area communities remain safe. - FULLARTON

Arrest made in Amanda Lindhout kidnapping A man was arrested last week for his alleged role in the 2008 kidnapping of Amanda Lindhout in Somalia. RCMP in Ottawa last Friday announced that Ali Omar Ader had been arrested in Ottawa on June 11 — five-and-a-half years after Lindhout, a native of Sylvan Lake, was released following 15 months of being held hostage in Somalia. It’s not clear how Ader ended up in Canada, although police said last week that the arrest was made following an extensive investigation referred to as Project Slype. Lindhout responded to the news through her Facebook page last Friday, saying she was “stunned” to have learned of Ader’s arrest. “For more than five years now, I’ve met regularly with a team of investigators from the RCMP as they’ve worked on this case. They’ve been confident all along that they would eventually make an arrest, though it was always clear they were facing difficult and dangerous conditions. I’m not sure I ever quite believed it would happen,” she wrote.

Lindhout said she was contacted several hours after the arrest by an RCMP officer who asked if she was sitting down. She said her knees gave out upon hearing the news, and she began to thank the several RCMP officials who were on the line. “I told them that night how proud I felt to be Canadian. I was, and always will be, humbled by the fact the RCMP has worked so hard on my case all these years, never wavering in its pursuit of my kidnappers.” RCMP Assistant Commissioner James Malizia in a statement last Friday commended Lindhout and Australian citizen Nigel Brennan — with whom Lindhout was taken — for their role in the investigation that led to Ader’s arrest. “I wish to acknowledge Ms. Lindhout and Mr. Brennan, and their families, for their tremendous courage and for providing witness statements that greatly assisted in advancing the investigation,” he said. “This arrest is a testament to the investigative team’s perseverance, and I wish to thank them for their excellent work.” - FULLARTON

urgent care back to the fore. ‘Golf for Urgent Care’ is being organized by the Sylvan Lake and Area Urgent Care Committee for August 14 at Meadowlands Golf Club. The event will act as a fundraiser for urgent care, with proceeds going toward the eventual purchase of medical equipment. But with the recent loss of a pre-election promise of urgent care, the tournament is about much more than raising money, according to Urgent Care Committee chair Susan Samson. Rather, she feels it will give the community a chance to rally once again behind a crucial cause. “I think everybody was so excited back in March, and now that excitement is not there,” she said. “If we have 144 golfers out, that’s 144 more people we can talk to, and you get the conversation rolling again.” Samson said talks surrounding urgent care have been ongoing between members of the committee, Sylvan Lake Mayor Sean McIntyre and InnisfailSylvan Lake MLA Don MacIntyre. The aim is to bring the matter to the attention of the province’s newly-elected government, and to find

out whether the pre-election promise of an urgent care facility still holds any validity. That task, Samson feels, would be carried out most effectively through joint lobbying with the the Town of Beaverlodge and the City of Airdrie, who were also part of a pre-election urgent care announcement. As of earlier this week, she said, plans were in place to have MLA MacIntyre and MLAs of other stakeholder areas discuss the matter with provincial health minister Sarah Hoffman, and to invite her to visit the area to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the matter. “I think you often don’t understand what’s happening on the ground unless you’re here and get a sense of what the community is, how busy the beach can be on a nice day and how large the surrounding area is,” said Samson. Work carried out by the committee and the community over the past several years is still very much valid, she added. “What we feel very strongly about is the work has been done,” she said. “The feasibility studies, the needs assessment, the discussion with the various

interested parties within our communities — everybody from Victim Services, RCMP, fire, mental health workers, social workers — we’ve had discussions with them all. The business plan has been done ... and so what we have to do is raise that awareness with the new government.” Tickets and sponsorships for the golf tournament in August are now available. Registration can be completed online at donate.dthealthtrust.com/ sylvangolf, and sponsorship information may be obtained by contacting Klaas Van Veller at 403887-3776, or at kvanveller@yahoo.ca. “(The golf tournament) gives us a real opportunity to get back front and centre,” said Samson. “If the province doesn’t recognize the need in Sylvan Lake, then we have to ramp it up amongst our citizens, and to do that they need to be aware of where we are at right now.” To date, about $66,000 has been raised toward the purchase of medical equipment for an anticipated urgent care facility. Organizers of the golf tournament have set a $20,000 fundraising target for that event.

École Steffie Woima School students participated in the fourth annual Steffie Kids Marathon last Thursday, led by the school’s heroic leukemia survivor, 11-year-old Michael Arthur.

wore an orange T-shirt to support for Arthur’s recent battle against cancer. Wearing an orange T-shirt himself, Arthur confidently led the whole school down to Centennial Park on his bicycle. “It’s exciting to lead the marathon,” Arthur said. “I have mixed emotions about this. I feel happy.” After spending months undergoing chemotherapy, Arthur has completed all his treatments and is now in remission. “There are no more cancer cells visible in my body,” Arthur said with a smile. Life is getting back to normal for Arthur. He has recently rejoined his Grade 5 class and has gotten back into playing hockey again. After leading everyone to the finish line, Arthur caught up with his friends and teacher and danced to the songs Cadillac Ranch and YMCA. It was clear that Arthur’s friends were happy to see him participate in school activities. Each marathon participant received a Steffie Kids Marathon 2015 medal at the finish line, while a number of prizes were also handed out.

Boathouse was an important part of Sylvan Lake

JEAN BRIDGE SYLVAN LAKE AND DISTRICT ARCHIVES SOCIETY

The following article and accompanying pictures were submitted by the Sylvan Lake and District Archives Society as part of a series celebrating the society’s 20 years of existence this year. The Archives Society is open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 4 p.m. at its new location in the lower level of the town’s Municipal Government Building.

The first boathouse on Sylvan Lake was owned by two farmers from Penhold, Bowman and Wilson, and run by Joe McCluskey, an former sailor and a bachelor. ‘Old’ Joe, as he was called, entertained the village male youths with his stories while whittling

away making outdoor furniture from native dogwood to sell to the cottagers. He always had some scheme afoot, like the 20-foot double decker scow he built with the idea of holding dances on the upper deck, but it was never very sea-worthy. (As

told by Jack Peach in ‘Reflections of Sylvan Lake’) In 1925 or 1926, J.P. Simpson, a C.P.R. station agent from Penhold, purchased the boathouse and put his sons to work running it. In 1928, this building was hauled out of town

and replaced by a larger facility adjacent to the new W.I. Piers. At the boathouse one could buy snacks at the concession booth, rent outboard motor boats, canoes and, as well, bathing suits. There were so many people anxious to go

swimming that they would rent still-wet bathing suits, not yet dry from the previous user. The “going” charge for renting a boat was 50 cents for the first hour, 25 cents for any additional hours, or $2 for the day. A yearly chore was was the painting and repairing

of as many as 50 boats, to keep them in good condition. (As told by his son Max in ‘Reflections of Sylvan Lake’) By 1979, after more than 50 years, the boathouse had outlived its usefulness and was dismantled.

Sylvan Lake teenager has a need for speed JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Sylvan Lake resident Ashley Halsey is a competitive stock car racer who’s proving her abilities as one of the top young drivers in Western Canada. SUBMITTED

ON FATHER’S DAY

Ashley Halsey, an 18-year-old Sylvan Lake resident and stock car racer, will compete in six more competitions for the track championship at the Edmonton International Raceway this season. Halsey will race in her car, a Camaro equipped with a GMC 602 crate engine, against eight other people. She has won Rookie of the Year twice for Western Canada NASCAR in the last three years, and said she hopes to place in the top four, as that is her usual. When Halsey races, she competes in two sets of 10-lap heat races, including a 30-lap feature race. Halsey said that racing may look like just driving at a high speed, but being a stock car racer takes patience and athletic ability. She said she hits an approximate average speed of 100 km/h. “I have to be really patient because there is a lot of spinning and a lot of wrecks,” she said. “If I stay out of it then I am fine, and then I end up moving up places.” Halsey said that racing in her car works her whole body as she is constantly switching pedals and trying to remain sitting in a proper position. “It really does work the majority of my body,” Halsey

said. “I am quite tense in the car because I am turning a lot which uses most of my muscle groups. Holding myself straight in the car works my spine and my core, so I am getting a pretty good work out in a 10-lap race.” In addition to her athletic ability being tested, Halsey said she loves the adrenalin rush that racing gives her, and said the rush is different each time because the sport is so unpredictable. “If somebody almost hits you, your adrenalin will spike, as opposed to if you’re just in the lead and you’re trying to keep your lead,” she said. “There will always be adrenalin because you’re really focused, but you also have to focus on what is going on around you.” Halsey said she has to maintain her athletic ability, which includes seeing her trainer two or three times a week and then exercising in her own time. She said she has to have good cardiovascular strength because while racing she gets hot in the car. “You have to get your endurance up and your cardiovascular strength up,” Halsey said. “I personally had to get a lot of leg strength just from switching pedals and all that kind of stuff. It’s a full body work out that you have to maintain.”

Sylvan Lake Minor Hockey Association unveils new logo Sylvan Lake Minor Hockey Association (SLMHA) will have a new

look in the 2015/16 season after branding and logo updates were announced

earlier this week. SLMHA last implemented logo and jersey changes in

fall 2007. The need for a new look, according to President Blair Mack, was “way overdue.” “This has been in the works for quite some time,” he said. “It has been eight years since the association has updated its look, and we felt the timing was right.” Jon Gulayets, who chaired the committee leading the re-branding, described the process as a “labour of love” for those involved with it. “It took many hours, ideas and designers, but we couldn’t be happier with the final product,” he said. “It speaks

about our game, our community and our nation.” Gulayets commended graphic artist and design challenge winner Jason Villanti of Redpin Designs for his work on the project. Without it, Gulayets said, the “project was not possible.” “Jason was great to work with as his creativity, designs and work ethic were exceptional.” New-look jerseys featuring the new logo have already been ordered, with jerseys for some age divisions set to arrive slightly later than others. - FULLARTON
