Council tries to find middle ground with festival policing requirements STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Additional policing requested by the RCMP for the Summer Sensation Beach Music Festival next month caused a headache for town councillors as they tried to find an mutually beneficial middle ground on Monday night. A change was made recently to the policing deposit required from True Channel Entertainment, organizers of the July 10 and 11 festival at Centennial Park, with the Sylvan Lake RCMP having outlined policing requirements for the event to include 12 RCMP members working on site, eight working off site, several Provincial Parks conservation officers and 20 members of a Strategic Tactical Operations unit. Organizers were told they’d need to provide a $65,000 deposit to cover the cost of policing, but felt the requirements outlined were over the top for an event of the festival’s nature. “This is a family type of event,” said Dana Carlson

representing True Channel Entertainment. “That is a very large police presence, and you’re now asking for a tactical unit, which would include riot gear. We’re concerned about the perception of it.” True Channel representatives added that the latest policing requirement was beyond anything they’ve ever seen for a festival, noting the police presence required seemed “very, very excessive” given the festival’s familyfriendly musical lineup. But Town community services director Ron Lebsack said consultations with various RCMP detachments throughout the province, including K Division headquarters in Edmonton, affirmed that the requests outlined were acceptable. “They’re in agreement that this is the right level of policing for an event like this,” he said. “This is (taking place) in a community, not in a farmer’s field or in the country — every person from this event spills out into the community. That’s what their policing level is based upon.” Lebsack added that a let-

ter from Sylvan Lake RCMP Staff Sgt. Gary Rhodes noted a “lack of confidence in the documents and the planning that’s been done so far” by organizers, resulting in the additional policing request. “When we look at planning documents in terms of public safety and how that public safety is going to be managed, the RCMP don’t have the confidence in that,” said Lebsack. Rhodes, according to Lebsack, noted that the policing requirements outlined were non-negotiable and in place to deal with a potential worst-case scenario. Coun. Jas Payne noted that True Channel’s feelings on what they felt would be adequate level of policing were made irrelevant by the non-negotiable nature of the RCMP’s request, with Mayor Sean McIntyre adding, “the question essentially is who pays.” Coun. Dale Plante felt the demands were putting councillors in an awkward position. “We’re being backed into a wall by a recommendation that says take it or leave it,”

he said. “I just really feel that this is a little extreme.” Coun. Christina Lust agreed. “One of the things that concerns me is that with all the stuff we’ve been doing to encourage events to come to our community, we agree to have this event come forward, and now we’re being put in a really difficult situation because we didn’t have all the information at the time of making that decision,” she said. “It doesn’t make us look like a place that people are going to want to come and have events here as a result of this kind of thing.” Coun. Graham Parsons rued what he felt was a miscommunication between the parties involved. “We’re faced with a decision that doesn’t look good either way, and I don’t think we have much choice,” he said. “Somewhere along the line, the lines of communication have not been very good.” Following a 15-minute recess during which administration met with organizers to discuss the matter further, a decision was arrived at that

would see the deposit required of True Channel Entertainment lowered to $50,000, with council adding $15,000 to an Enhanced Policing Fund specifically for the event to make up the remainder. Coun. Plante said he felt doing so was a responsibility of council. “One of the mandates our council committed to is having attractions to make it

feasible for people to come to this town, and as far as I’m concerned, this is something we’re really looking forward to having,” he said. “I think we need to take responsibility for the miscommunication.” Coun. Matt Prete was absent from the meeting. Hedley, Our Lady Peace and Matthew Good are among the festival’s slated musical acts.

In its recent Speech from the Throne, the new Alberta government reiterated its plans to make life more expensive in Alberta. Over time, the NDP government will a) raise business income tax by 20 per cent (to 12 per cent from 10 per cent), b) hike the minimum wage by almost 50 per cent (to $15 an hour from $10.20 per hour), c) add multiple new provincial personal income tax brackets while increasing the top bracket by 50 per cent and d) may hike resource royalties after its promised royalty review. All that means there’s a great opportunity to create jobs and prosperity — in Saskatchewan, or perhaps British Columbia. For those who think economic success and employment are accidental and inevitable creations, the mere result of natural resources in or above ground, the next several years will be a useful case study. Unlike Hawaii, which has warm weather and “sells” that to tourists, the three most Western provinces have oil, gas and an assortment of minerals or other natural resources. That does not preclude other sectors from proliferating — one hopes they do. But resources will matter to Western prosperity for some time. That means such provinces must always think hard about their policies to ensure they attract — not repel — investment. After all, an energy company can drill a well in Saskatchewan (or in North Dakota) as easily as in Alberta.

On taxes, given where the Alberta government is headed on policy, Saskatchewan and B.C. both have an opportunity to lower their tax rates and potentially attract highincome earners. For instance, 12.2 per cent of all Alberta tax-filers reported total income of $100,000 or more in 2011, the latest statistical year available. That compares to Saskatchewan (7.4 per cent), Ontario (7 per cent) and B.C. (6.3 per cent). Simply put, if B.C. or Saskatchewan can lower their higher top marginal rates, they might attract some tax filers who have filed in Alberta as residents of convenience for tax purposes. Do that, and B.C. or Saskatchewan might find that

at worst, they experience little if any revenue loss to their treasuries. At best, they’ll attract entrepreneurs and others who help juice their economies. Now think about business taxes. When Alberta raises its general provincial corporate tax rate to 12 per cent, that puts Alberta higher than B.C. (11 per cent) and on par with Saskatchewan on the general rate (12 per cent) but higher than Saskatchewan’s manufacturing and processing corporate tax rate (10 per cent). If B.C. and Saskatchewan want to attract more investment, businesses, and entrepreneurs, lower personal and business tax rates help. So they might as well cut their high marginal rates, drop

their corporate tax rates, and undercut Alberta. (Manitoba could be part of this experiment too though its overall high personal tax take requires a deeper cut; on the corporate side, at 12 per cent, Manitoba will only match Alberta’s new higher rate.) There are other reforms that Saskatchewan and B.C. should work on. If the B.C. government and various First Nations governments can ease the way for investment, that would help. In Saskatchewan, if the Brad Wall government stopped pandering to anti-out-ofprovince and anti-foreign investment sentiment, that would be economically helpful. So too would privatizing government-owned companies — something done by

B.C., Alberta, and the federal government decades ago. Such actions would signal Saskatchewan is even more open for business. In Alberta, in the next four years, the provincial government is betting that a 20 per cent rise in corporate taxes, a 50 per rise in the minimum wage, and a 50 per cent rise in the top marginal personal income tax rate won’t affect jobs or prosperity. Other provinces might want to lay a contrary bet of their own. Prioritize safety for children around machinery Production: Red Deer, Alberta Published every Thursday by PNG Prairie Newspaper Group in community with: Publisher Mary Kemmis

Dear Editor, When it comes to accidents, it's common to think, ‘oh, it will never happen to us.’ That is what we thought until our six-year-old son, Roan, a member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, lost his leg in a lawnmower accident.

A few years ago, Roan was riding on a lawnmower with an adult when he fell off and severed his left leg at the knee. As he was airlifted by helicopter to the hospital, we wondered if we were going to see him again. With lawn cutting season here, we want to help spread Roan’s mes-

sage across the country that kids should never be around a lawnmower. It doesn’t matter how good you are with machinery, it just takes a moment for a life-changing accident to happen. Today, Roan is an active and energetic child thanks to help from The War Amps with financial assistance for artificial

limbs, regional seminars and peer support. We just hope that his story will prevent even one child from being injured. If you would like to learn more about how to encourage children to play safely, please visit waramps.ca. Jolene and Neil Heck Stettler

Sylvan Lake Library joins lobbying effort for fair ebook prices STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Heavily inflated ebook prices are giving Canadian library staff a headache as they try to cope with rising demand. Libraries are being charged up to five times more than consumers for ebooks, and face a number of lending restrictions with them, according to a statement issued last week by a coalition of Canadian libraries lobbying for fair ebook pricing.

“One of the other things they’re doing is jacking up the prices, so whereas the public can purchase something for, say, $20, libraries are spending $85 for the same item online.”

thing for, say, $20, libraries are spending $85 for the same item online.” Ebooks are still being refined as a relatively new medium of reading, said Vandriel. But she worries their potential as a convenient alternative to physical books could being lost through their limited accessibility for libraries. “(Publishers) are trying to get a business model going for something that hasn’t really been around for very long,” she said. “Their rationale behind it is that after 26 circulations, a book is pretty much dead and libraries have to buy another copy anyway.” However, she assures that’s not the case. “Librarians all over North America have been testing this, and it’s not true,” she said. “There are some books — especially hard-cover books — that circulate well over 100 times before a replacement copy needs to be purchased.”

Publishers, she added, impose time and borrowing limits to mitigate the absence of replacement purchases, which would be made unnecessary entirely with an unlimited-use product. Meanwhile, a coalition of public libraries nationwide — including Sylvan Lake — is undertaking a campaign to raise awareness of the need for fair ebook prices. The end goal, Vandriel explained, is to get publishers to re-evaluate their business models to accommodate such an adjustment. “I tend not to purchase from those publishers that do put those restrictions on, but then that limits the titles that I can get — some of the best sellers go through those big publishers,” she said. “It’s trying to balance whether it’s really worth spending $85 for one ebook when I can get four physical books otherwise. It’s difficult for libraries all over North America.” Ebooks currently account for about 13 per cent of pur-

Once the limit has been reached in either case, a book must be re-purchased again — and at a hefty price. “(There is) a policy of 26 checkouts, and after that they pull it back, so rather than us considering it a purchased item, it’s more of a rental for a limited period of time,” said Caroline Vandriel, library directory for the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library. “If we’re purchasing something that is widely circulated, that could be gone fairly quickly, and then we would have to purchase another copy. “One of the other things they’re doing is jacking up the prices, so whereas the public can purchase some-

GOD MADE IT EASY!  EVERYTHING IS LOVE, NOT RELIGION I am amazed how easy God made it for us to get close to Him. His main call on our lives is to love. To love Him and people (including your enemies!). Jesus reveals the Father in heaven’s heart to us. He sometimes mention things that is pleasing to the Father. For example Jesus tells about a man who had a hundred sheep and lost one. How the man left the ninety nine and searched for the one lost sheep. Jesus says that the Father’s heart is the same to find every ......lost man and women, because they do not know love.....thus do not know Him or His nature. The Bible says that God is love. (1 John 4:8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.) God made it so easy - His love for us pushed everything out of the way to reach us. This love is like a burning fire that breaks...the power pride, jealousy, addictions, perversity, fear, and rejection by parents and family. Then He put our shame and past under the blood of Jesus Christ. See the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin! (1 John 1:7......and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.) God made it easy. - The Father gave you the truth to set you free. Jesus says when you are a true follower of Him, you will keep His words, and know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (John 8:31-32 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you

abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”) So make sure you know the Bible, for it is the Truth, so no man or devil or fallen angel can deceive you. God made it easy. - The Father even gave you His Spirit to reveal the Truth to you!! (John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.) God made it easy. - God is so close to you that you will know His invisible nature!! (John 14:17 The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.) He gives you the Truth to set you free, and His Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to you! There are many doors into the spiritual realm and to other spirits, but your Father gave you only ONE door INTO.... Him, and that door is through your Saviour Jesus Christ! (John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.) See, the Father made it easy to come to Him. If your God is dead, it is because you left Him on the cross.... He is alive and known by the living!! Let His Love (His being) flow through you! Rudi Niemand / Frontline Worship Centre

A Sylvan Lake man is dead following a two-vehicle collision in Jasper National Park on Monday morning. Jasper RCMP and emergency services attended the scene on Miette Hot Springs Road at around 11:40 a.m., where it was determined a motorcycle collided with a fullsized pickup truck. Police say the motorcycle was heading toward the hot springs at the time of the crash, while the truck was leaving the area. The motorcycle’s sole rider, a 28-year-old Sylvan Lake man, was said to have lost control of the unit before crossing the centreline on a curved part of the road and colliding with the truck. He was pronounced dead on scene, while the truck’s driver and lone occupant was unharmed. An RCMP collision analyst is continuing to investigate the incident, which forced the temporary closure of Miette Hot Springs Road. Parks Canada, EMS and Jasper Fire also assisted on scene. - FULLARTON

The potential for conflict between a mobile vendor and the Sylvan Lake Farmers Market prompted council to approve an alternative location for the 50th Avenue and 50th Street vending site while the market’s taking place. Town administration reported to council on Monday night that a letter from the manager of the Sylvan Lake Farmers Market noted some interference on the market from a fresh fruit vendor at the site, saying the vendor’s location was such that it appeared to be part of the market. The letter also stated that the vendor was benefitting from foot traffic generated by the market. Coun. Megan Chernoff said she felt it would be necessary to relocate the vending site only on Fridays when the market

takes place. “I think it would be appropriate,” she said. “It looks like they’re part of (the market), and I can see how that’s a bit awkward, but I don’t want to see a permanent move.” Coun. Jas Payne agreed, and felt the issue was one specific to the type of vendor occupying the space. “It doesn’t need to be a permanent move,” he said. “A food truck or other vendor would actually fit the area, even with the Farmers Market.” Council eventually resolved to approve a bylaw amendment creating an alternative vending location in the eastern portion of Centennial Park directly south of an existing site in the event of a genuine conflict on Fridays. First, second and third readings were given unanimously. Coun. Matt Prete was absent from the meeting.

Sylvan Lake catholic schools bid farewell to principals

After nearly three years as principal of École Mother Teresa School, Dorice Swensrude is moving on to become principal of École

Camille J. Lerouge School in Red Deer. The move is just one of several in a shuffle that will see Swensrude succeeded

by current École Our Lady of the Rosary School principal Jodi Smith. And while she has mixed feelings about her departure

at the end of the current school year, Swensrude assured she’s confident about leaving the school in such capable hands. “As difficult as it will be to leave École Mother

Teresa School, I take comfort in knowing the school will continue to flourish by offering a strong, vibrant academic program to your children,” she wrote in a letter to parents last week.

In an interview, Swensrude said she was excited about her next move, but expressed sadness about leaving such a positive educational environment. “I will miss the phenomenal students, staff and the school community,” she said. “They are very caring and kind students, and a very supportive, caring community.” Students surprised Swensrude with a farewell party last week, in a gesture she described as “heart warming and very touching.” The show of respect was an indication of the impact she’s had on the entire school community, according to the school’s assistant principal, Ken Meraw. “She is so dedicated to making sure things are done the right way … and every decision she makes is what’s right for the children,” he said. Smith, who previously taught at École Mother Teresa School, said she was looking forward to working among familiar faces, and in a familiar environment. After nearly three years as principal of École Our Lady of the Rosary School, she said she feels like she’s returning home, in a sense. “I am excited to follow the students from École Our Lady of the Rosary and many of the same families,” she said. “I also know a lot of my colleagues … it will be a lot of fun.” Like Swensrude, however, Smith is leaving a school community of which she’s very fond. And that sentiment, according to administrative assistant Loretta Zolinski, is very much mutual. “She’s always making everybody comfortable,” she said. “She’s just so open and friendly and always trying to make that connection with families and people that are coming in.” Diane Kylczycki, principal of St. Martin de Porres School in Red Deer, will take over from Smith. Zolinski feels Kylczycki’s experience as a school administration makes her the ideal replacement. “Diane has all that background already,” Zolinski said. “We’re all looking forward to what she will bring to our school.” - NEWS STAFF

Contract awarded for installation of traffic signals on 43 Street

Sylvan Lake town council on Monday awarded a contract for a reconstruction project on 43 Street that includes the installation of traffic signals at 43 Street and 47 Avenue. The contract was awarded to Red Deer’s

Border Paving, whose bid totalling $1,611,655,70 including GST was the only one submitted. The project will see 43 Street rehabilitated between 47 Avenue and 49 Avenue, where a number of road base failures have

occurred. As well, storm drainage will be improved through design changes recommended by the project’s consultant, while a ductile iron water main will also be replaced. Work on the project will be carried out

in July and August to prevent disrupting school traffic. It’s expected to be completed this year, with the new traffic signals in place by the beginning of November. - FULLARTON

Recreation staff relocating to old town office Staff of the Town’s Recreation and Culture department previously housed in the Aquatic Centre are being relocated to the old town office on 50 Ave. The old town office was one of five buildings considered by Town administration for the move, which takes place in light of the Aquatic Centre’s recent closure, and was chosen for its ample office and programming space. Its rooms, which

include a meeting room, former council chambers and an office area, were found to be suitable for meetings and children-, youth- and culture-related programming. The Town still owns the building, and the building’s services and utilities still function, administration noted in a report to council on Monday. In an effort to retain staff, those who worked at the pool are being utilized in

other vacant positions and for enhanced programming options being offered as a result of the Aquatic Centre’s closure. “The goal of the department is to maintain those qualified and experienced staff members as these positions will be necessary to open the pool and resume programming and lessons when the facility has been repaired,” reads the report presented to council.

Some Recreation and Culture department staff, however, have already been lost to nearby communities, and administration are attempting to retain as many of those remaining as possible. Swimming lessons will be held in the lake for this year’s summer season, with a number of related programs scheduled to be held in Centennial Park. - FULLARTON

Café Bodega opens following ‘complete overhaul’ When Bayview Café relocated from Lakeshore Drive to Cobbs Block Central in early 2014, owner Sheree Davies decided more than a name change would be needed, and eventually decided to go with a “complete overhaul” of her business. The result is Café Bodega — what Davies calls a “fast, casual café” that’s as much about the social experience it offers as it is its unique dining menu. “In the evening on Thursdays, Fridays and

Saturdays, we’re calling it a social menu, so it’s more of a gathering place, and it’s not a dinner menu,” she said. “You can have your charcuterie trays, you can enjoy some wine that goes with them, some flatbread, some small plates, and meet with friends and have a good time.” Café Bodega opened on June 12 at the same Cobbs Block location previously occupied by Bayview Café. While certain aspects of its product offering and operation have remained the

same — such as its counter service and its wide array of coffees offered — others are new and all together unique to the Sylvan Lake area. “Instead of beers and wings, we want it to be wine and charcuterie, and they both go together and are different,” said Davies. “You want to come after work and sit with friends, you want to socialize and have something different than your typical deep-fried wings and beer. There’s nothing wrong with wings and beer — we all love our

wing night — but this gives you a different option.” While charcuterie, with its selection of cured meats and accompanying fixings, isn’t entirely familiar to residents of the Central Alberta area, feedback so far has

been positive among both those who are familiar with it and those who have tried it for the first time. “A lot of people don’t know what charcuterie is, so it’s something fund and different to try,” said Davies.

“We’ve had positive results, and those that do know are very anxious to come back again.” Café Bodega first opened its doors as Bayview Café in 2007. - NEWS STAFF

Students in Action raise $2,200 for charity JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

David Thompson High School’s Students in Action had a successful year of fundraising. Back row: Curtis Cech, Triston Aginas, Levi Marcinek, Cody Rae, Amy Boivin, Kailey Aubin, Jayce McMeekin. Middle row: Danna Lublinkhof, Pam Dedora, Abigail Conway, Owen Smith, Sydney Elliot, Casey Cole, Kylie Windo, Amber Conway, Samantha Ahlstrom, Araya Verhaeghe, Jordan Ramsay. Front row: Joss Leong, Macy Kotanko, Lauren Weber, Kylie Kotanko, Tanner Brososky, Alyssa Ahlstrom, Nicole Weber, Claudia Turuk, Samantha Gaetz. Missing: Ashley SUBMITTED Sands, Baillie Burns.

David Thompson High School’s Students in Action (SIA) raised $2,200 over the last year for local, national and international non-profit organizations. Of that money, the students donated $600 to the Mountain Rose Women’s Shelter Association, $650 to Free The Children, $600 to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation in Edmonton and $350 to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. They also held a food and clothing drive for the Mountain Rose Women’s Shelter Association, said teacher Pam Dedora. “The students like to do sustainable donations,” Dedora said. “(They chose) the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada because it was close to their hearts, and the Mountain Rose Women’s Shelter Association because we wanted to pick something local to help.” Dedora said the students fundraised by hosting and

organizing a variety of different activities such as a meet-and-greet barbecue for parents and teachers, two school dances, hot lunches and a Christmas market. Dedora said the Christmas market was the biggest fundraiser, as it involved the entire school. By taking part in fundraisers, students learned that organizing an event is hard work and a lot of responsibility, according to Dedora. “I try to make sure I give them as much autonomy as possible,” she said. “It’s their responsibility to organize things and they have to ask me to go pick it up. I am not just going to go do it for them.” Dedora said the students involved in SIA set an example and helped build the school’s culture. “There’s a lot of really great students out there who are trying to make our communities and our world a better place,” Dedora said. “A lot of people will say that this generation is really selfinvolved, but that’s not what we’re seeing here. We’re seeing children work together and reach others.”

FortisAlberta has partnered with the Kingman REA to operate its electricity distribution system for more than 60 years. “It has been a privilege to work with the Kingman REA Board of Directors throughout this process and we appreciate the strong show of support from members,” says Phonse Delaney, President and CEO, FortisAlberta. “We look forward to continuing to provide safe and reliable electricity distribution service to Kingman REA members as customers of FortisAlberta.”

FortisAlberta serves the electricity needs of farms, businesses and homes in more than 200 communities across rural Alberta. The Company’s focus is the safe and reliable delivery of electricity with more than 120,000 kilometres of power lines.

Five top golf tips to help boost your game When it comes to golf, it's the little things that can have the biggest impact on your game. Whether it's your first attempt, or 10th season, golf expert Bob Weeks has got you covered at the links this summer with these five tips: Choose the right clubs Regardless of your experience or skill level, choosing the right equipment can be the difference between duffing it and striking the ball straight down the fairway. It's important to work with a professional to get the clubs best-suited to your game and then, to have them custom fit. You should be fit for the length, loft, lie angle, shaft flex and even the grip size. If your clubs aren't custom fit, it will be like walking around in shoes that are the wrong size. Get on the ball Choose the right kind of golf ball for your game. While golf balls all look the same, it's what's inside that determines if it's right for you. Golf balls fall into two categories: distance or control. Distance balls are generally two-piece balls with a large core and a cover. They are harder and better suited for higher handicappers or beginners. Control balls, usually three- or four-piece balls, are softer and spin more meaning they will land on the green and stop. More skillful players should use these. Consider the elements Weather is always a factor in golf and dealing with it must always be considered. For instance, in cold temperatures, the ball will travel shorter distances, so take more club. The opposite is true for warmer temperatures. If you're playing into the wind, swing easy as that will keep the ball from spinning too much and rising up into the breezes. And downwind, make sure to judge the intensity of the breezes so you can choose the proper club. Your ball will roll further than normal on a downwind shot so take that into account.

Putting and chipping is priority Lots of players like to boom their drives and will spend a lot of time on the range hitting their drivers. But if you want to improve your scores, you should spend more time working on your putting and chipping. Since most average players miss a lot of greens, the best way to save strokes is by chipping it close and making more putts. Focus more on your short game than your drive and you will improve.

Play the 19th hole Win or lose, there's no better way to celebrate than hitting the 19th hole. Less is often more in golf and the same applies when considering what to eat and drink after a round. Molson Canadian 67 for example is specially brewed with 67 calories and an ABV of 3% per 341ml, offering a light, refreshing alternative for active players. - NEWS CANADA

A look back at Sylvan Lake grocery stores BUNNY VIRTUE SYLVAN LAKE & DISTRICT ARCHIVES SOCIETY

The following article and accompanying pictures were submitted by the Sylvan Lake & District Archives Society as part of a series celebrating the society’s 20 years of existence this year. The Archives Society is open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 4 p.m. at its new location in the lower level of the town’s Municipal Government Building.

Cole’s Food Centre Jack Cole and brother LaVerne bought Tendersweet Meats in 1946 from Bert Woodrow of Red Deer and operated the business until 1948, when Jack took over as sole owner. In 1959, on the site of the former Pete’s Café, a new store was built under the name Cole’s Foods Ltd. This business was sold to Western Grocers in 1964 and Jack went with IGA as a meat merchandiser. The Western Grocers Group opened the store again under the name Red and White Store. The photo on this page shows Cole’s Food Centre, and to the left, what used to be the Magnet Store, owned by Joe Martin in the 1930s and 40s and sold to Jenkins Groceteria in 1948.

May & Turner Meat and Grocery Store In 1946, Charlie Turner came to Sylvan Lake to join his is brother-in-law, Jack May, in the meat cutting business. In n 1949, Jack and Charlie bought the Rosse Store on Main n Street and opened the May & Turner Meat and Groceryy Store, which they operated until 1961 when the business ss was sold to Cobb’s Ltd. Charlie moved with the business ss and worked as the butcher at Cobb’s for many years. The he old May & Turner building went through several identities, s, such as a second-hand store, Monte Keith’s Sylvan Lake ke p News office and Betty Fisher’s beauty salon and wool shop before being demolished in 1978 to make way for the Red d Rooster Store. S n Shamrock Grocery Store & Shower Station The Shamrock Grocery was a little gem in n the cottage area. In the 1950s, Maryy t N ea Newcombe owned the grocery store and tea room, which was located where the Sylvan r n Auto Spa is today. The store had one phone, A e, w which was kept busy by patrons and cottagee o owners. The store also offered showers — 355 cents a shower, including a towel! The teaa c room served freshly-made pies and muffinss which were served on the porch set with tables and chairs. A memorable event in the tea room’s history was a wedding reception held there during World War II. The store was sold in 1955 to Rose Young, who operated it for many years and then sold in 1980. The building was torn down soon after. Those of you who knew Mrs. Young might remember that she owned a cottage by the name of Navlys — Sylvan spelled backwards!
