The Grand Forks Irrigation District (GFID) is working with the Interior Health Authority on coming up with a solution to treating water for Nursery area users. There are currently 60 homes in the Nursery area that receive water of drinking from the GFID. The water used by city residents is currently treated with chlorination. “The wells are close to the river and are adjacent to farm land, which does create the risk of pathogens in the water,” said Robert Birtles, Interior Health Authority (IHA) environmental health officer. “Although the majority of the water is used for irrigation, 60 homes also use the water for domestic use; therefore, this system is required to meet standards under the Drinking Water ProtecElijah Wilson (right) gets some last minute advice from Tom Starchuk (left) and Scott Savtion Act and Drinking itskoff of the Grand Forks Blues as he gets ready to throw out the first pitch in the openWater Protection Reging game of the Grand Forks International (GFI) Baseball Tournament Tuesday at James ulations—the water Donaldson Park. Birtles said that the system water in the Nursery area has come back with unacceptable results before, including a positive test of E. coli in 2006. “The wells draw the water in an unconfined aquifer, which is considered highly vulnerable to contamination,” he said. “As a result of these factors, the water system is considered high risk. GFID is under the Interior Health Boil Water Remediation Program and have certain target dates to make improvements and to safeguard the water.” Murray Knox, operator and manager of the GFID, said the wells are tested weekly and there is no bacteria in the water. “The wells are near the river so there’s a potential risk of the river contaminating the wells,” he said. “Interior Health put a boiled water advisory on in 2003 and it’s been on ever since.” Knox said that they have taken approximately 1,000 samples over the past 20 years with only two positive E. coli results back in 2006 when the river had an exceptionally high flood elevation. Interior Health has advised GFID that they must install disinfection equipment to treat all the nursery water by the end of 2017. Birtles said that GFID is compliant with the current conditions on its permit by sending out the boil water notices and working with IHA on looking into installing new equipment. • See IRRIGATION DISTRICT page A8

1905 The ominous sound of the fire alarm brought people running to the centre of the city where flames from the P. Burns building were shooting skyward. 1910 A cave-in occurred in the old No. 2 tunnel workings at the Granby Mine. It is estimated that upwards of 100,000 tons of rock fell, opening up the surface and enlarging the immense glory hole. 1915 Cst. G. Stanfield, Mrs. Stanfield and their daughter arrived from Phoenix and will in future make this city their home. 1920 Rooms in the provincial building are to be remodeled and used temporarily as a high school for Grand Forks in line with the recommendation made by the school board, other civic bodies and the Department of Education. 1925 May Crawford, seven-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Crawford, owes her life to the dashing and unflinching courage of Raymond Dinsmore, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Dinsmore. The boy bounded 15 feet from the North Fork footbridge to the Kettle River below and drove into the onrushing stream, rescuing the little girl after she had gone down for the third time. 1930 While in Kelowna on a business trip, C.A.S. Atwood had his new sedan car stolen. Police have as yet no clue as to who took it, though a visitor to Penticton is reported to have recognized the car number. 1935 Contracts were recently let by the school board for the conveying of pu-

While the library has managed to pare back costs for its current year, it will still be about $15,000 short for the upcoming fiscal year if it hopes to maintain current service levels. 2005 The first annual Christina Lake Sprint Triathlon was held at the public beach. Frank Phipps and teammate Anton Kew won first place for teams, and Darrin Markvardsen and Ashlee Robinson won first place for top male and female. Forty-eight people competed. 2010 Fructova Heritage Site is now the home of the Boundary Museum. The site has a rich history of Doukhobor presence in the Boundary: built in 1929 as a schoolhouse, the building most recently housed a Russian language library before becoming home to the Boundary Museum.

A fouryear-old girl, after being perfectly well the night before, woke up with numbness in her legs and feet. After removal of the tick, she recovered completely within six hours. 1970 The breathalyzer has finally been declared “legal” by the Supreme Court of Canada and is now back in use. 1975 A survey of several Grand Forks residents indicated that Monday evening’s storm was the worst in living memory,

Fire danger up with heat Former soldier finds Some residents in the West Boundary had to be put on an evacuation notice because of a large lightning-caused fire in the Zamora area of Westbridge. There have been 11 lightning-caused fires in the Boundary region in the last couple of days mostly near Rock Creek. The largest fire, near Westbridge, is still burning and has caused the RDKB to issue an evacuation notice to 10 residents there. The fire is visible from Highway 33 and there are three homes located in close proximity to the fire. “We currently have one fire burning that is 26 hectares in size,” said Jordan Turner, fire information officer for the Southeast Fire Centre. “It’s in the Zamora area of Westbridge (11km north of Rock Creek) and there is an evacuation notice for 10 residents.” Turner said the fire, which was lightning-caused, was discovered on Sunday. As of press time (Tuesday afternoon), it was 40 per cent contained. “There are currently 34 fire fighters, two helicopters and three pieces of heavy equipment fighting the fire,” said Turner. Of the 11 fires since Thursday, three are out, one is in mop up, two are contained, four are under initial attack and one (Zamora) is considered expanded attack. There are no fires near Grand Forks but

much support for walk DELLA MALLETTE Grand Forks Gazette
The Long Way Home project promotes something dear to Dave and George Bachmier. Long Way Home founder Cpl. Kate MacEachern, a former tank driver and soldier, is preparing for her longest journey yet in her quest to raise awareness and money for veterans and awareness about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Proceeds from this year’s walking challenge will go towards PTSD service dogs and the Wounded Warrior Weekend, a gathering for veterans. Grand Forks resident Dave Bachmier suffers from PTSD. He has a service dog, Pinnaar, and credits the canine with helping him cope not only as a husband and homeowner, but as a businessman as well. MacEachern will make her way through the Boundary the first week of July, and to help promote the Long Way Home and support its benefactors, Dave and his wife George are holding a barbecue at Neighbours Computers on Saturday, July 4. “This resonates greatly with us,” George said. The barbecue will be held from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.; $5 gets you a hot dog, cold drink and watermelon, she explained. “All proceeds go to The Long Way Home 2015. Also, enter to win two tickets to the GEM Theatre to see Max, a move about a U.S. Marine service dog.” Local fire departments and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 59 are also stepping up to welcome MacEachern. She and her team are walking into Christina Lake on July 3 and the Lake fire department is hosting a barbecue in their honour. The next morning, The Long Way Home team is walking to Grand Forks with the Lake firefighters as an escort as far as the boundary between Grand Forks and Christina Lake; Grand Forks Fire/Rescue is meeting them at that point and will escort them into Grand Forks. The Legion is hosting a luncheon for the team, although the time of noon is tentative. MacEachern’s work to raise awareness for soldiers and issues such as PTSD partially stems from a near-fatal incident during training in 2007 in which she suffered a broken neck, spinal cord damage and a fractured skull.

She founded The Long Way Home in 2011. In 2012, she walked (with a full ruck, in full uniform) from CFB Gagetown, N.B. to Antigonish, N.S. a total of 576 kilometres. A year later walked from Cape Breton, N.S. to Ottawa, Ontario, a trek of nearly 2,000 kilometres. This time she was a civilian. She carried a full ruck but this time, no uniform. This year’s walk will be her final walk. On May 1, MacEachern stepped off from Nipawin, Sask. and began the walk to Chilliwack, B.C. This is the longest trek yet. She will cross three provinces and 3,100 kilometres in 85 days. “This year we focus on coping and healing,” she says in her mission statement at her website, thelongwayhome. ca. “When the search began for our benefactors this year, we wanted to round out our thought process that help looks different for everyone. Help comes in many shapes and forms. PTSD service dogs are one tool that is becoming more and more utilized and more and more understood. After much research and checking, we finally made a decision.” Rebecca, the founding member of the NASH Project (which rescues neglected and abused dogs and horses) and her daughter Emily will be travelling with The Long Way Home via horseback. “We are fundraising along with generating awareness so please follow us, and get involved—no support is too small! Time to get boots on, saddle the horses and head out. Talk the talk and walk it,” MacEarchern stated.

there is a small fire near Stewart Creek on the west side of Christina Lake. “That is a very small (one hectare), lightning-caused fire,” said Turner. “It was called in Sunday night.” There is a lightning-caused small fire burning near Motherlode Creek on Copper Mountain near Greenwood. There have been 90 fires total in the Southeast region this year (fiscal year starting April 1) burning a total of 137 hectares. Because of the hot and dry conditions, the Southeast Fire Centre is enacting a campfire ban. Starting on Friday campfires will be prohibited throughout the Southeast Fire Centre, which includes Grand Forks and the Boundary, to help prevent human-caused wildfires and to protect public safety. “We’re putting it in place throughout the fire centre because of how hot and dry it’s been for the last few weeks,” said Jordan Turner, fire information officer for the Southeast Fire Centre. “We haven’t received enough rain fall to sufficiently bring down the fire danger.” The campfire prohibition will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified. “These prohibitions cover all BC parks, Crown lands and private lands, but do not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has forest fire prevention bylaws and is serviced by a fire department,” said Turner.

Well upgrade necessary
Water always seems to be a hot topic in the region and with the recent heat wave, it’s only gotten bigger. Water meters and watering restrictions aside, the boil water advisory at the Grand Forks Irrigation District (GFID) and the recent request to install disinfection equipment reminds us all how important and costly water is. As the 60 households in the GFID Nursery area can attest, the water does not come free. Equipment to treat the water will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. On top of that there is the infrastructure costs such as the wells, the pipes, testing of water, manpower hours and more. The equipment is deemed necessary by the Interior Health Authority (IHA), which enforces the province’s Drinking Water Protection Act. The act came into effect in 2003 and the Nursery area has been under the boil water notice ever since. GFID services the water in the Nursery area using three wells which are near the Kettle River. Although the water is mainly used for irrigation, there are domestic users and so it falls under the Drinking Water Protection Act. At least two separate reports of the well have tested positive for E. coli bacteria, which has spurred the request from IHA for the treatment equipment. It may seem like we have an endless source of cheap water with the aquifer and the Kettle and Granby River here in beautiful Grand Forks, but let’s not take our water for granted. No one wins when people get sick. Some may think that IHA is heavy handed when it comes to enforcing the province’s policies, but without enforcement and compliance there could be some very real consequences.

Driving in a video game much safer On The Ball CRAIG LINDSAY After driving some three hours to Kelowna and then back down through the Okanagan and back to Grand Forks on Saturday in a car without air conditioning, I had had about enough of this heat wave. Fortunately, the roads weren’t that busy and I made decent time. I got to my dental consultation in time and although the visit proved very painful, especially

when I got the bill, it wasn’t too long. Of course, leaving the air conditioned building for the heat of the city wasn’t a piece of cake either. Driving in Kelowna makes one instantly miss Grand Forks. Bumper to bumper traffic is bad enough at the best of times but when it is 40 degrees out and the car is barely moving and you have no air conditioning, while that’s no fun. Hitting the open road isn’t bad because you have the windows down and you can get some cool air flowing. Speaking of driving, I figure there are two types of people:

those who pass and those who don’t. Maybe it’s me getting older and less anxious to go anywhere really fast but I look at passing as being unnecessarily dangerous. It could also be I over think things. I look at it as putting my life in danger based on my ability to judge time and distance. Basically, I psyche myself out. Heck, I even get a little sketchy about passing in one of those passing lanes. I always hate getting to the merging part (or suicide squeeze, as I call it) where the two lanes come together. that battle? Fortunately, I don’t drive very fast so I don’t get a chance to pass all that much anyway. There’s also the fact that I get to hear the police reports every week and read about all the details of car crashes, impaired driving charges and everything else. I think that makes me even more cognizant of all the dangers lurking on the roads. I think I’ll leave any dangerous and crazy driving I do to video games. At least there the consequences aren’t so costly. You just have to reset the game console.

See for yourself why Real issue is water conservation ReStores win awards Letters
to the editor
Editor, The Gazette: It appears that the prevailing mentality on the water meter issue is: no water meters equals NO water conservation. Why are we stuck here? Stuck here for years! We must get our heads out of this “box” of thinking before we can move forward constructively. Personally I have been conserving water for years. I save my laundry water to pour out on the lawn and flower beds (best weight bearing exercise), I save my bath water for toilet flushing. Do I wish my plumbing was designed to reuse grey water and not waste it—you bet I do! Much employment potential here—more intelligent way to direct resources. My respect for water use came about through awareness/education and not a threat (higher water bill). I DEPLORE that our previous city council made no effort in this direction but rushed to saddle an uninformed public with an unnecessary, unwanted, and [potential] carcinogenic (as declared by WHO) appliance. Who are the main beneficiaries of water meters? Is it not the corporate machine controlling our capitalist society—the manufacturing, mining, wholesaling, etc industries? What a bonanza for them getting millions of units of water meters sold to a mostly compliant, gullible public.
Just get the municipal leaders on board... meters needed to conserve water... easy... it’s politically correct to conserve water... meters will do it. Will they? Or will those who have the income continue to misuse the water? What happened to the conservation principle of reduce, reuse? Just how are we reducing by mandating that millions and millions of households (worldwide) must have one of these gadgets in their home. Is this not part of this “conspicuous consumption” that Pope Frances speaks about in his recent encyclical on climate change? And what an irony: instead of impressing on the new generation of water users the preciousness of water, what do we do? We show them how to use it frivolously/unconsciously—we give them a spray park. We need you, the people we elected, to do some deeper thinking and not simply go with the status quo or the corporate biased advice of Urban Systems. Let’s stop this shallow approach and see water meters for what they are: a wasteful corporate grab, a total misuse of many resources. Let’s focus on the real issue—water conservation. Eva Anthony, Grand Forks
Opinion on smart meters counts Editor, The Gazette: FortisBC will [potentially] cut off power to customers in Area D who do not want a smart meter. FortisBC will install smart meters despite refusals. The only “option” is a smart meter with a “radio off” function that can easily be turned right back on. FortisBC is installing Itron C2S000 meters. Installations will not be made by electricians, but by a contractor called Corix. FortisBC will not provide a certificate from a legally-qualified electrician that the smart meter is safe, or written confirmation that my old log house/barn can safely accommodate a smart meter. The non-transmitting smart meter is not a meaningful option for persons concerned about health risks; fire hazards; security; and Constitutional rights and freedoms. The House of Commons Committee Report recently tabled recommends: “That the Government of Canada, through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, consider funding research into the link between radiofrequency fields and potential health effects such as cancer, genetic damage, infertility, impairment to development and behaviour, harmful effects to eyes and on the brain, cardiovascular, biological

and biochemical effects.” The information is available through Canadians for Safe Technology in Vancouver (c4st.org) and Take Back Your Power (takebackyourpower. net/directory/canada/). Alex Atamanenko’s representative said the way to change existing policies is through public involvement. Residents from Grand Forks and Area D collaborated to create a 265-page Grand Forks Water Meter Manifesto, a collection of questions and concerns about water meters, and suggestions for alternatives. It was presented to City Council, and was instrumental in getting city council to agree to consider resident concerns. Your opinion counts. The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen board voted to pass a resolution requesting the provincial government, through the BC Utilities Commission, halt installation of FortisBC smart meters in the RDOS. Area D can do the same, if enough people speak up. I will collect letters and present them to FortisBC, Area D Representative Roly Russell, and others. Karin Bagn, Grand Forks

Get to bottom of mess
Editor, The Gazette: I am asking that council and Grand Forks area residents educate themselves by merely going into the Internet and look into “Neptune water meter lawsuits” and begin reading. You will find countless lawsuits against this company on both sides of the border. Water delivery prices rose thousands of dollars (Atlanta, Ga.), as in other communities. There are reports of health problems emanating from the meters (Kamloops, B.C.). We must stop the process of water meters until we— taxpayers and Council—get to the bottom of this mess we are in. In the June 24 Grand Forks Gazette, we incorrectly spelled the name of one of the girls at the Aboriginal Day celebration on page A20. The correct spelling is Iayana Font. Also, a headline in a letter incorrectly identified June 25 as a Friday, rather than a Thursday. This is no reflection on letter writer Donna Semenoff, who had the correct date. Headlines are written by the Gazette editorial staff. We apologize for the errors.

Editor, The Gazette: For the past two years, Habitat for Humanity Canada ReStores were the recipients of the Corporate and Social Responsibility Award from the Retail Council of Canada! This award recognizes a retailer-initiated program that demonstrates a creative response, active collaboration and successful fulfillment of community needs. Habitat for Humanity ReStores are non-profit home improvement stores and donation centres. ReStores sell new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building materials and appliances to the public at a fraction of the retail price. ReStores are volunteer run, with staff available to facilitate and assist in the day to day operations. The objectives of a ReStore are three-fold; to raise funds for the local Habitat affiliate, to help the environment by redirecting items from landfills and to provide exceptional value to shoppers. Habitat for Humanity Boundary had planned for the construction of a new building for a ReStore in downtown Grand Forks. With the plans in place, Habitat opened a temporary ReStore in the old forestry building at 136 Sagamore Ave. Unfortunately, that project had to be cancelled due to circumstance beyond Habitat’s control. That brings us to the current situation. We invite the citizens of Grand Forks and the Boundary region to help preserve this social enterprise that is so treasured by other cities. The best way to do so is to support the ReStore by donating, volunteering and shopping. See for yourself why ReStores are winning national awards. For more information, or to volunteer or donate, please call 250-4422720. The email address is gfrestore@telus.net; also, find the ReStore on Facebook. ficult for some of us? I don’t know the details of the situation but if no one was being directly threatened, this is just another needless animal killing. During that past few decades more wild species are “urbanizing” so I think we must make some choices. Either we eliminate all urbanizing animals or we learn to co-exist with the entire ecosystem as it develops. E.Z. Walker, Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette: Why was the cougar in the tree on Kettle River Drive shot on June 21? Surely not because it was killing a deer? Isn’t this what they normally do? Was the cat threatening someone or their pets? It seems ironic that the moment a predator sets foot in town or comes around people, we kill it. Is the city not [considering] a deer cull? Can we not spare one for the cougar? Perhaps the realities of life are just too dif-

A cougar killing deer is a reality of life
Providing that we do not pump the wells dry, the availability of water for fire protection is dependent on the infrastructure including pumping capacity, reservoir storage and piping. Well logs will give ample warning if over pumping is having an abnormal effect on the water table. My experience in farming and irrigation dates back to the 1950s, in the Okanagan where my father was a vegetable and flower seed grower. The soil was a silty loam with a relatively high field capacity. We have had flower and vegetable gardens in Grand Forks for the past 35 years. In contrast to our Okanagan soils, our Grand Forks soil is a sandy loam with very low field capacity. In warm dry conditions, two days is the maximum interval before permanent wilt. Hand watering is not a practical alternative. In summary it is my hope that city council will insist on credible science in making a decision regarding imposition of stage 2 water restrictions and will provide the public with their rationale. a one per cent statistic. Due diligence would mandate that staff and council be informed of the current data. How much water is in the wells is as important as the balance in the city’s bank accounts. The Osoyoos reason is just keeping up with the Jones’s. There are many other pipes into our aquifer including some large purveyors of irrigation and domestic water. I was dismayed but not surprised when the mayor dismissed a discussion of the other users as being beyond the control of city council. Climate change is real and has been going on forever. As long as the aquifer hydrograph achieves historic maximum levels during the annual recharge phase, there is no reason to take any action solely in the name of climate change. In other words, the water table is dependent on the shorter term weather pattern rather than longer term climate. When the bowl is full there is no action that will aid in keeping the bowl fuller. California is in drought, which is a fact. Cutting back on our garden watering will not make any difference to their plight.

Editor, The Gazette: Re: Staff recommendation to implement stage 2 water restrictions. Points raised: • One per cent snow pack • Osoyoos is doing it • Climate change • California drought • Precaution against shortage of water for fire protection • Stage 2 watering with hand watering supplements is adequate for home gardens The only recording snow station in the drainage is Grano Creek. The snow pack was 450 mm of water equivalent versus 600 mm average in mid-April or about 75 per cent. The snowmelt was early and was complete by the end of May. The relationship between mountain snowpack and the Grand Forks aquifer water table is indirect. The aquifer has not experienced any downward trend in recorded levels. An accurate reporting of ground water level in comparison to historic averages, maximums and minimums would be a more credible justification of the need for further restrictions than

Irrigation district Knox said they are looking into costs of the equipment and how to best finance it. He said it will likely cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. “The irrigation district is like a co-op,” he said. “It is owned by the users and therefore they bear any additional costs.” There are other options such as twinning the system (separating the domestic water from the irrigation water), which would be even more costly. Knox said the issue is further complicated because the wells and the pipes provide water for both drinking water and irrigation water. “If you treat the water you are also treating the water that goes on the fields,” he said. “In the summer, one per cent of the water in the Nursery system goes to drinking while the other 99 per cent goes to irrigation.” Knox said they continue to consult with Interior Health about the issue but nothing has been finalized at this point. “It’s a process,” he said, adding that it has not been determined who exactly would pay for the new equipment and how. Birtles said his office has received two

separate reports from 2011, which were conducted for GFID on the wells, stating that the wells were directly connected to the Kettle River. “In addition, it has a history of having positive results of having E. coli in that system,” he said. “In addition, the wells didn’t have surface seals.”

Once they identify their treatment options, they should be approaching a consultant and determine what the cost would be.
Birtles said a surface seal is a construction requirement in B.C. for wells to stop surface water from going down the edge of the well and enter into the aquifer and into the well itself. Birtles said there have been surface seals or the equivalent placed in all wells except for well #4. Birtles said that because GFID Nursery wells are part of the Interior Health Boil Water Remediation Program, they are given several conditions on their per-

mit to go from high risk to lower risk including sending out a boiled water advisory letter out every six months to users and taking a look at treatment options. “They have already done this in this case,” he said. “Once they identify their treatment options they should be approaching a consultant and determine what the cost would be associated with those treatment options. Once they have done that, they need to start financing for the preferred option.” Birtles added that once they have done all that, they would be taken off the boil water advisory list. “They have been complying with their conditions of their permit,” he said. “They have actually met the conditions of their permit. They were granted a six-month addition on one of the conditions, which I believe was financing.” The extended time frame given by IHA to GFID for the program is September 2016 for implementation of a solution. “This is about safeguarding the source water and ensuring it meets the regulations,” said Birtles.

Salmon focus of discussion CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
There was a small but keen group of residents who came out to a presentation about salmon reintroduction efforts in the upper Columbia Basin above the Grand Coulee Dam by the Upper Columbia United Tribes (UCUT) on Monday at the GEM Theatre. The evening started off with a drum circle and prayer, and after a short introduction, a film called Treaty Talks: A Journey up the Columbia River for People and Salmon. The film documents the struggle to bring salmon back to the Upper Columbia River and the renegotiation of the Columbia River Treaty, as told • See SALMON page A24

WATER – EVERY DROP COUNTS
Abiding to sprinkler regulations pays dividends. When using water responsibly and within regulations, power and operational costs are reduced saving our community money. Energy reduction also relates to less greenhouse gas emissions and less draw from our aquifer.

Concert will benefit stewardship society CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
The Welcome Centre at the Lake will be hosting an exciting musical event on July 4 to raise money for the Christina Lake Stewardship Society. Playing at the event will be local teenage rocker Damian Alblas as well as The Static Shift from Calgary. The acts will be set up
on the patio at Lisa’s Bistro and will play outside. Lisa Smith from Lisa’s Bistro said raising money for the stewardship society is always a good cause. “They just did the huge lake clean up,” she said. “They’re just building the (native plant) nursery out back; all the kids’ programs they have in the summer. They are huge for the commu-
Salmon session by people who live on its shores and tributaries. The evening ended with a question and answer period. Appearing at the event were filmmaker Adam Wicks-Arshack, who introduced his film Treaty Talks, along with Virgil Seymour and Eileen Delehanty-Pearkes from UCUT. Johnathan Oldroyd, a retired lawyer and conservation-based land development consultant, wrote the paper Salmon in the Kettle and helped bring UCUT to Grand Forks. He said the evening went well although he hoped they would have a better turn out. “You always hope for more but it’s significant that a lot more key players know about this issue now compared to even back in Febru-
nity. They have some of the best volunteers I have seen.” The event goes from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. and is for all ages. There will be a beer garden as well as food available. “They’ll be playing off the bistro,” she said. “Everyone will need to bring lawn chairs and blankets.” Smith said that The Static Shift has played for crowds of over

There’s been no discussion of it in the Grand Forks community.” The Upper Columbia United Tribes are a collaboration of five major area tribes: Coeur d’Alene Tribe, Kalispel Tribe of Indians, Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, Spokane Tribe of Indians and the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. “The Columbia Basin tribes and First Nations jointly developed this paper to inform the U.S. and Canadian entities, federal governments and other regional sovereigns and stakeholders on how anadromous salmon and resident fish can be reintroduced into the upper Columbia River Basin,” said John Sirois,

Just like opening act Damian Alblas, the band consists of talented teens. The power trio features guitarist/vocalist Mitchell Brady, 17, drummer Isaiah Stonehouse, 16, and bassist Keone Friesen, 17. He formed his own band at the age of 10 and has kept going strong since. “We just released our second CD,” said Greg. “We had a great release event. We had a lot of positive feedback. We’ve been doing newspaper and radio interviews all over the place. They’re a very good band live. I think their live act is better than their CDs and they’re pretty good.” Greg said The Static Shift plays a high energy blues/rock blend heavily influenced by classic blues/rock mixed with romps of alternative, indie and psychedelic rock. The band has opened for both Colin James and the Sheepdogs and played at numerous music festivals in Western Canada. They finished in the top 10 of the International Songwriters Competition out of more than 18,750 entries. Tickets for the event are available in advance at the Christina Welcome Centre for $15 or at the door for $20. For more information or to reserve a ticket call the welcome centre at 250-447-6161.

Musicians form community band
CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
There’s a group of musicians in town who get together a few times a week to play music and have a good time. The group, known as the Grand Forks Community Band, also performs at various concerts and musical events throughout the area. The idea for a community band came up through open mic nights at Kocomo’s Coffee House, says Patrick Stevenson, one of the founding members. “The community band started three years ago in Grand Forks,” he said. “It was initiated by the First Friday open mic nights and by Big Raven Community Productions. That came from an idea from another community where you bring your musicians together.” Stevenson says that everyone wants to be a singer, everyone wants that experience, but not everyone has a band to back them up or someone to coach them. “The whole idea was to bring together a bunch of musicians of all skill levels to create a community band so that we could back up the people in our community who want to learn how to sing or how to play and have that experience of being on stage,” he said. Stevenson said so far the concept has gone over very well with over a dozen people joining the band. “It’s been very successful,” he added.
THE CRAND FORKS COMMUNITY BAND
“We’ve had up to 14 members at once, which can be difficult but it’s been a lot of fun.” Stevenson said the community band has eight committed members at this time. He said that the band is always accepting new members, whether it’s full-time or part-time. “Anyone is allowed to join—anyone in the community,” he said. “If you have a song you want to produce, you want to sing, you want to record and you don’t have anyone to help you out, come see us. That’s what we’re here for. We’re here to help out our community in all of its musical endeavours in any way we can.” The community band certainly lives up to their name, not only by having diverse group of musicians but also in that they support their community at events. “Our group also does a lot of community stuff by volunteering and supporting and making sure that community events are going on in a good way,” said Stevenson. “We’ve been doing the Canada Day celebration; we’ve done the Christina Lake Homecoming; we’re doing a fundraiser on June 27 at Christina Lake’s Community Hall to help them finish their stage off.” Stevenson said the band also does paid gigs and special shows. “We’ve always got something on the go,” he said. “Right now we’re looking for a line-up of talent so we can put on a show at the GEM Theatre in the fall through Big
Raven Productions. We did in once and it was very successful. We want to do it again this year highlighting all our local talent and tell a story as we do it.” Besides being one of the main coordinators of the community band, Stevenson is also the lead vocalist and plays the rhythm guitar. Other members include Mike O’Neill on tenor sax and vocals; Michelle Croissant on keyboards and back-up vocals; Sacha Petulli, business coordinator and plays bass guitar and sax; Max Lindeman on percussion; Debbie McQueen on back-up vocals; Lise Tunold on back-up vocals; and Mandy Nielsen on vocal. Michel Petulli also helps out with engineering and producing. The band has recently completed a couple of videos with local videographer Les Johnson. “They are all locally done,” said Stevenson. “We had a couple of the Hip Sisters as dancers in one of the videos. We had a couple of friends playing bit parts and telling a story.” Stevenson said making the videos has been quite a learning process but the members are excited about seeing the final products. “We’re going to be releasing them in a couple of weeks,” he said. “Our objectives this year are to get the videos done, do as much community work as we possibly can, and then applying for grants so
we can do this full-time. That would be a great job to go to every day.” Anyone interested in playing with the community band can contact Patrick at 250-443-1056. The band practices twice a week at PMP Studios in Grand Forks, a fully equipped music studio. Interesting musicians can just show up or call Patrick for more information. “We will take anyone of any skill level and find where they fit with us,” he said. “We just want to give people that experience of singing in front of people and feeling like a rock star.” The community band is still running the first Friday open mic nights but they have moved to Happy Days Diner. “We’re excited about it,” he said. “It’s a new adventure. It’s a bigger place and a new venue plus they have a liquor licence. Kocomo’s was great, I will always have a soft spot for them, but it’s time to grow.” Stevenson said the open mic nights are another great chance for budding local musicians to show off their skills. He said there is a great deal of musical talent in the Grand Forks area but people tend to stick with their own clique. “They don’t get to experience a lot of the great music here and there is a ton, a ton of talent. I’d love to attract these people to come out and share with the rest of the community what they have.”

A few faces at the GFI GERRY FOSTER
For the Grand Forks Gazette
KYLE DHANINI – Kamloops Sun Devils Kyle was born in Blaine, Washington. He attended Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C. He was drafted in the 43rd round of the 2009 MLB draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. He made a few stops in the minor leagues including Helena and Wisconsin. In 2014 he played 69 games for the Rockford Illinois Aviators of the Independent Pro Frontier League. He is now an assistant coach at his alma mater in Kamloops.
Sheldon attended Seattle University in 2015 where he played second base for the Redhawks. He finished the season with a .304 batting average, third on the team, and had a team leading 70 hits and 22 stolen bases. Prior to this he was at Bellevue College where he received All-Region Honours. In 2012 he was an All-State selection in High School.
In this hockey mad country of Canada the name Mahovlich is recognized by most ardent hockey fans, especially those who remember the glory days of the Toronto Maple Leafs. There will be a Mahovlich in the lineup of the Everett Merchants this week at the GFI. Brandon is his name and he does have an interesting connection with Canada. His father Michael was born in Burnaby, B.C. and was an outstanding Canadian athlete. He threw javelins rather than baseballs and was good at it, very good in fact. He represented Canada in the 1988 Summer Olympics. He also performed for his country in the Commonwealth Games in 1986 and the World Championships in 1987. His son Brandon throws baseballs, and was at the GFI last year. He was born in Issaquah, Washington and compiled an impressive ERA of 1.49 in high school. Afterwards he attended Bellevue College where he held hitters to a meager .212 batting average accompanied by a stingy earned run average of 1.28. Brandon transferred to the University of Missouri for his junior year but was red-shirted last season. Hopefully he will be back pitching at Mizzou next season. Meanwhile we have an opportunity to see him in Grand Forks at James Donaldson Park.

CONNOR CLOYD – Seattle Studs
One news headline way down in Oxford, Mississippi this spring announced, “Late signee sparks Rebel Offense.” The reference was to Connor Cloyd, who was in his junior college year but first at the University of Mississippi. He had played two years at Tacoma Community College where he was a first team all-league selection. In his first year at Ole Miss he hit .369 and after they inserted him in the leadoff spot he became one of the Rebels better hitters. This summer for Seattle Connor’s hitting at a .464 clip through June 24.

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH
William “Bill” James Shadbolt William “Bill” James Shadbolt passed away June 24, 2015 in Grand Forks, B.C. Bill was born in Swan River, Manitoba May 7, 1935. He was the youngest in the family. He is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Akerley of Calgary and Florence Danard of Winnipeg. He was predeceased by four brothers and one sister. Bill was a bit of a rolling stone which led him in his younger years from Manitoba to British Columbia. He was a jack of all trades but particularly enjoyed working as a bush camp cook. Eventually, in his retirement years, he followed friends to settle here in Grand Forks. He absolutely loved living here. This became his home. He thought it was the perfect place for him and he developed many lasting friendships. Bill was very artistic. He was an accomplished painter, however, it was very difficult to actually get a finished painting from him. He was his own worst critic and more often than not actually destroyed his paintings if it did not express what he felt in his heart and mind. So if you’ve even managed to see or actually own one of his paintings, consider yourself very fortunate. He was an avid reader; he loved classical music; he enjoyed working with wood though perhaps not always with the best results; he looked forward to his Thursday night bingos and he appreciated all aspects of nature except those pesky deer that ate his roses. Many of you here know that Bill could be an ornery cuss. At times he could be a little difficult to deal with as he was very good at pushing just the right buttons. He enjoyed a good debate though of course you all know that he was the one that was always right. But he did have a good sense of humour and really enjoyed a good laugh even if occasionally it was at his own expense. A Celebration of Bill’s life was Held on Saturday, June 27, 2015 in The chapel of the Grand forks Funeral Home. We would like to thank Deborah Baker of the Grand Forks Funeral Home and Reverend Simon Shenstone for your help in making a difficult time so much easier for us. We have been welcomed by the Grand Forks community and could not have accomplished what we have without everyone’s assistance. We would especially like to thank his very good friends Darwin, Julie and Wayne and Heather. Over the years you have cared and watched out for Bill. In short, you have become his family. Thank-you. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Grand Forks Funeral Home, gffh@shaw.ca.

the most captivating live shows on the road today. Touring across Canada, they have received multiple “best of the fest” nods from festivals such as Rifflandia, Squamish Valley, and more. With music that ranges in style from old country, new country, bluegrass and southern style rock, The Washboard Union delivers tight harmonies, with an undeniably original sound including banjo, dobro, harp, guitar and fiddle. Their set will include songs from their highly acclaimed first album, along with new material recently released. Hosted by Alive! Entertainment Group, the show takes place at the old Fructova School, now Boundary Museum, 6110 Reservoir Road, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Kocomo’s, Pharmasave and gallery 2. Advance tickets $15, $20 at the gate. Family rate is (caregivers and their dependents) $40. Grand Forks International Baseball Tournament July 4 and 5 ticket holders receive $5 off at the gate!
