Quesnel strong in organ donor registrations at Service B.C. Since the launch of the partnership between Service BC and BC Transplant, the number of local organ donor registrations has been double the previous five-year average. In the month of May alone, the number of registrations at the Gold Pan City location was seven times larger, growing from four in 2014 to 28 in 2015. The increase in numbers is thanks to the partnership program between BC Transplant and the province launched in April 2015. The program makes supporting organ donation easier by providing information on organ donation and registering organ donation decisions at all 61 Service BC locations throughout the province.

“Organ donation saves lives,” Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services Amrik Virk said. “Taking a moment to register at Service BC is a simple, small step anyone can do. With 61 locations across the province in communities like Quesnel, we are ensuring that all British Columbians will have the opportunity be a life-saver.” The Gold Pan City has been active in this program longer than most. Selected as a pilot location in 2014, the success here, noted officials, was a contributing factor to rolling the program out around the province. Currently, more than 95 per cent of British Colum-

this program is making it easier for the other 80 per cent of British Columbians to register their decision. “My sister Val received a heart transplant in April,”

Quesnel resident and sister of transplant recipient, Pam Robertson said. “We thought we were going to lose her and now she’s feeling great and recovering in Vancouver. We are so thankful to her donor; the impact of that one person’s decision is life changing for Val and for our whole community.” Service BC centres are central offices where British Columbians can access a wide range of government services. This program offers visitors information about organ donation, answers questions and assists those interested in confirming their intention by registering online. With close to 500 B.C. citizens on the transplant

waiting list, signing up to become an organ donor could help save lives – possibly the life of a neighbour, co-worker, friend or family member in need. This program will allow British Columbians to step forward, register and potentially change the life of a patient in need. “I’m proud Quesnel has consistently stepped up and are choosing to help save a life, be it a stranger, a friend or family member,” MLA Cariboo North Coralee Oakes said. “This community is showing its strength by choosing to register their decision on organ donation, and I hope we continue to be a leader in this area.”

City council hears airport plan

Pat Maloney of Dillon Consulting presented Council with a Business Plan (“Plan”) for the Quesnel Regional Airport. The Plan’s top three recommendations for growth and revenue are: Car Rental; complete airport zoning so that potential investors will know exactly what types of developments are possible; and, Fixed Based Operation or Hangar (e.g. aircraft mechanics shop). The Quesnel Community and Economic Development Corporation will bring forward a report to outline the next steps that will focus on the top three recommendations of the Plan.

Promotional items

The budgetary review continues to be kept at the forefront, with a Council decision that no further promotional items will be purchased, except for City pins and pencils. The City pins can be purchased for $0.50/pin and the pencils are given out to school groups that tour City Hall as part of their school curriculum.

Proposed Outdoor Smoking Regulations The Policy and Bylaw Review Committee

(“Committee”) have been hard at work reviewing and discussing a proposed Smoking Regulations Bylaw. This bylaw will be in addition to the Province’s Tobacco Control Act for regulating outdoor smoking and other substance use, including e-cigarettes, in targeted outdoor public spaces in the City. The proposed bylaw, which has received First Reading, will target areas that elected officials and city staff have received complaints from the public such as Spirit Square and Lebourdais Park. The Committee further recommended the following locations be included in the bylaw: all playgrounds; all playing fields; West Fraser Timber Park; Quesnel Youth Soccer playing fields; and, the Fraser River Foot Bridge including the entrances. Public consultation will be carried out over the summer months with the City emailing the proposed bylaw out to business improvement associations, neighbourhood associations, Quesnel and District Chambers of Commerce, health stakeholders as well the bylaw will be placed on the City’s website and social media channels for feedback and public input. Quesnel and Community Mailboxes Canada Post has notified the City that Quesnel will be transitioning from door-to-door mail delivery to community mailboxes sometime in January 2016. Even though Council is politically opposed to Canada Post’s decision to cease door-to-door mail delivery (Council has forwarded resolutions stating as much to the North Central Local Government Association, Union of British Columbia Municipalities and the Federation of Canadian

Municipalities) the recent court decision in the City of Hamilton ruled in favour of Canada Post. Therefore, Council passed a resolution to direct City staff to work with Canada Post to determine the best possible sites for the community mailboxes within the City.

2014 Annual Report Council endorsed the City’s 2014 Annual Report that summarizes the Corporation’s 2014 goals, activities and financial reporting. Also included are highlights of the 2015 – 2018 Corporate and Strategic Plan and proposed 2015 actions. For full details please visit the City’s website.

truck. Council approved a one-year renewal of a heated bay for the City’s residential garbage truck. This sophisticated piece of equipment requires heated storage that the City is currently unable to support with the current Public Works Facility. The heated bay for the residential garbage truck has been incorporated into the design of the proposed new public works facility.

Aggressive Panhandling Since my last column, time has just flown (I know I say this all the time, but it’s true this time!) Work as the Chair of the Executive Committee has seen some strides towards getting our panhandling card prepared to be distributed to our businesses throughout Quesnel. This card will provide the business owners and their employees some tools to help identify what “aggressive” panhandling looks like and what it isn’t, and what steps to follow in order to deal with situations as they arise. We will be doing a “business walk” throughout the community to distribute these cards and answer any questions that might be out there. We are also working on a document that will outline our strategic framework as a community that will be the starting point for discussions with various Ministers during the UBCM (Union of British Columbia Municipalities) conference and AGM this September. Orange Shirt Day will be held this fall and I have been tasked with being the Council liaison for the Orange Shirt Day Steering Committee. I will be working with SD#28 and other partners to create a meaningful, respectful day for our community. A report will be coming to Council shortly that will contain the outcomes from the first half of the Social Sustainability and Community Safety Task Force that I chair. Having met with our new Staff Sargent Andrew Burton from the RCMP, we will be moving forward with the second half in early September, with discussions centering around some of the strategic initiatives of our RCMP office. As First Vice president of NCLGA (North Central Local Government Association) I am meeting regularly with our Priorities and Planning Committee to look at how we strategically move resolutions forward that were successful at our AGM in May 2015 several of which came from Quesnel. This is our opportunity to highlight them at the provincial level. I hope that you all have the opportunity to take in Canada Day down at LeBourdais Park, July 1, and I wish everyone a fun and safe summer. Council Column’s will resume again in September.

Barkerville cemetery new accessible trail officially open The historic town of Barkerville is the most recent community in the Cariboo Chilcotin to unveil a new accessible trail. The Barkerville Cemetery Accessible Trail was built in partnership between the Cariboo Regional District, the Barkerville Heritage Trust, Friends of Barkerville, Northern Development Initiative Trust, Cariboo Chilcotin Beetle Action Coalition and the provincial government through the BC Community Recreation Program. “The completion of this new accessible trail adds another great feature to the popular historic town of Barkerville,” Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Coralee Oakes said. “I applaud the work and leadership of the Cariboo Regional District and the many businesses and individuals whose support and financial contributions have made this new trail a reality. The trail has

a packed, six foot wide crushed gravel surface with a gentle grade and sections of moderate difficulty. “The official trail opening is the completion of a vision to connect the Barkerville site and the Barkerville Cemetery in an inclusive way,” stated Barkerville Historic Town’s Chief Executive Officer, Ed Coleman. “The Barkerville Heritage Trust is very excited to provide an additional opportunity for people of all mobility levels to enjoy Barkerville’s rich history, and we would like to thank everyone who helped make this trail a reality.” “The Barkerville Cemetery Accessible Trail means that more people will be able to learn about and enjoy the incredible history behind B.C.’s Cariboo region. Happy Birthday Canada While July 1 marks the anniversary of our country’s birth, it should also be a time in which we should reflect on our past and celebrate our achievements while looking to the future. Canada Day is also an opportunity to reflect on the men and women whose vision and hard work make this country better; a time to get together with family, friends, and our community to celebrate just how lucky we are to live in the best country in the world!

NH healthcare programs target Gold Pan teens The Northern Health Board praised the work underway to reduce Northern Health’s carbon footprint at its latest meeting. Energy conservation projects were implemented at six facilities across the region in 2014, and were able to save over $250,000. Funding for these projects was provided through the Carbon Neutral Capital Program that is combined with funding from the local regional hospital district partner. Fortis BC and BC Hydro also provide incentives that can be applied to projects to help reduce energy use and costs. “We put a strong emphasis on being energy conscious including finding ways to reduce costs for facility maintenance and utilizing

the savings for health care related programs,” Dr. Charles Jago, Northern Health’s board chair said. “We operate in a uniquely challenging northern climate, but our staff continues to find creative and innovative means to be more efficient despite those challenges.” Northern Health’s energy savings team was able to reduce its natural gas consumption by three per cent in 2014 over 2013, and has seen a reduction of seven per cent total since starting the program in 2009. In addition, electrical consumption dropped by two per cent in 2014 from 2013. The human resources team also provided information on two programs targeted to youth interested in

pursuing a career in health care. The first is the Grow Your Own program which includes an interactive presentation to grade 10, 11 and 12 students about the diverse opportunities in health care. These events have been held in Prince George, Quesnel, and Fort St. John, and will occur this month in Vanderhoof and Terrace. The second is the Interactive Clinical Simulations that is a partnership with the Innovation and Development Commons. The first session in April included a wide range of health care professionals and a group of Carrier Sekani youth. “These unique programs engage youth across Northern Health and

are helpful to get youth thinking about their future, and hopefully a career in healthcare within northern B.C.,” Northern Health’s Chief Executive Officer and President Cathy Ulrich said. “We know people that come from rural communities and learn in northern communities are more likely to practice in a rural setting. Presenting these career opportunities will encourage youth to pursue post-secondary education in a health care related field.” The opening of the new Lakes District Hospital and Health Centre in Burns Lake and Learning and Development Centre in Prince George were also celebrated at the board meeting.

While we celebrate this Canada Day in our own unique and diverse way, I think it would be fitting to spend a moment to think about and thank those who sacrificed for our great country. Without them, we would not have been able to grow on our past accomplishments nor would we be celebrating the freedoms and diversity we hold so close to our hearts. Acknowledging all of the veterans and hardworking volunteers across our country is something we cannot forget. I know I’ve been keeping track of the work that Paul & Terry Nichols and their team are doing as they continue to ride across Canada to bring awareness to our veterans and the issues they face returning home. I encourage you to visit the Communities For Veterans, The Ride Across Canada Foundation Facebook page to read the very inspiring and emotional stories being shared. On Canada Day Paul will have made it into Manitoba. They have travelled so far and I know our community echoes my hearty congratulations to the team on the progress made on the ride and the significant benefit you are providing to the veterans as you make your way to Newfoundland. Since 1867, Canadians have grown into a vibrant multicultural mosaic, and here in the Cariboo, we are living proof of that. It doesn’t matter if it’s your neighbour across the street, in another province or even another country - we, as a country are often recognized for our willingness to help out our neighbours in time of need. Our volunteers continue to lend a hand and help – seeing the long list of community groups and the volunteers helping support those organizations. The dedicated volunteers and volunteer families of our fire departments across the Cariboo desire a standing ovation for the service they provide. I’ve had the privilege of touring the 150 Mile Fire Hall, the start of the Likely Fire Hall and participating in the Quesnel Volunteer Fire Department gala night in the last few weeks. All being built through the work of volunteers and kind sponsors. Keep up the great work volunteers – your work does not go unnoticed! By taking part in celebrating Canada Day, you share pride in a place that we all are so fortunate to call home. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Canada Day celebrations in Lebourdais Park today. Activities and entertainment start at 11am and run until 4pm. Don’t forget to bring your lawn chair and sunscreen. Now to close with the words Terry Nichols uses so eloquently on her posts about the Ride Across Canada – ‘my heart is full and I am grateful.’ Grateful for our country, our community and our people.

Happy Birthday Canada!

Much to celebrate

G

o Canada Go! Go Canada Go! Those chants and cheers rang out at soccer stadiums across the nation this month, and this week those words won’t be out of place anywhere – today (July 1) is Canada Day. We hope people will celebrate, because there are any number of ways to do so. There’s Canada Day at LeBourdais Park, celebrations at Cottonwood House and Dominion Day in Barkerville. On this occasion, it’s fun to wrap ourselves in the Canadian flag and wrap ourselves in our Canadian identity, whatever it may mean to us. It’s fine to celebrate some of the symbols that stand for Canada and Canadians, and play street hockey, eat poutine, drink beer and crank up Anne Murray on the ghetto blaster. When we hear the strains of O Canada, or when we chant ‘Go Canada Go,’ there’s a temptation to think all the while, with swelled hearts, how Canada is the greatest country there is. That may be true, but Canada doesn’t equal great simply on principle. It’s all of us together and each of us individually who make it so, and must always make it so. Canada Day, we think, is meant to inspire pride – pride in our country, in our flag, and in who we are. Are we proud to be Canadians? We should be. Most anywhere we look, from coast to coast to coast, and especially close to home, we should be able to find sources of pride. But if we don’t see, at the same time, things that we wish were different and ways that Canada can be better, then we aren’t looking closely enough. We can salute the flag, and at the same time believe that it will one day stand for an even greater Canada. Go Canada Go! Go Canada Go! Let’s cheer and chant, yet not be afraid to ask, at the same time, where we are going, and where we wish to go. –BP

B.C. still the Wild West for elections

T

he man behind “HarperPAC” says it lived and died in a few days to make a point about third-party advertising in Canadian politics. When it launched, I wondered why he would choose such a deliberately provocative name. No, not “Harper,” but the acronym for “Political Action Committee,” which has come to symbolize the financial excesses of U.S. politics. HarperPAC ran one radio ad, accusing Liberal leader Justin Trudeau of blaming voters for his declining popularity, and suggesting that Trudeau’s “months of mistakes” are a likelier cause. No kidding. HarperPAC spokesman Stephen Taylor, who like Stephen Harper before him has worked for the National Citizens’ Coalition, announced the end of the project last week. “We have contributed to a new discussion about political financing in a fixed election era that is critical to our democracy,” Taylor said. “We note that this discussion only occurred once a right-wing analog of the left’s PAC-style efforts emerged on the scene.” Indeed, it was when Harp-

B.C. Views erPAC emerged that muttering began about “dark money” in Canadian politics. Unifor, Anti-Conservative front LeadNow and the many faces of the Tides Foundation somehow failed to ignite much discussion in the Canadian media. Taylor launched the bid in response to the emergence of “Engage Canada,” a union-financed action committee that he said was part of a broader effort by the left to oust the Conservatives. Engage Canada portrays itself as a brave alternative to shadowy right-wing groups such as Working Canadians, which has also run pro-Conservative ads. Engage Canada’s latest ad plays on the union movement’s cherished “inequality” theme, selecting statistics to portray the wealthy as making out far better than the rest of us

ment Act. Not only did this recognize the freedom of outsiders to weigh in on elections, it also did away with pre-campaign restrictions on registered political parties and candidates. NDP MLA Leonard Krog warned that this sets the stage for “some mad Wild West show,” with politicians so desperate to raise money they start looking for the B.C. equivalent of renting out the Lincoln bedroom in the White House. The big difference between the pre-campaign ads for this fall’s federal election and the next provincial vote in 2017 is that corporate and union donations to parties and candidates have been eliminated at the federal level. That means more money available for third-party campaigns, but it seems to be fairly well distributed between the two sides, the Conservatives and everybody else. Here in the Wild West, nothing’s going to change as long as the B.C. Liberals are in the saddle. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. in Harper’s Canada. (The notion that “inequality” can and should be fixed by everhigher taxes on “the rich” staggers on, zombie-like, as if capitalism was the cause of poverty.) Two recent developments have led to all this. Scheduled elections every four years have finally taken effect at the federal level, after a series of minority governments. And courts have repeatedly struck down efforts to restrict third-party spending in the so-called “pre-campaign” period as an unwarranted restriction on free speech. The B.C. Liberal government tried and failed several times to restrict third party spending, largely in response to the million-dollar tirades of the teachers’ union. Former attorney general Wally Oppal used to warn about American-style influence by wealthy interest groups targeting scheduled elections. Their strategy was not so much to keep corporate money out of B.C. politics as to keep it flowing through the B.C. Liberal Party. This spring the B.C. Liberal majority passed Bill 20, the Election Amend-

Best wishes Editor: On the weekend of June 19 and 20 Correlieu secondary and McNaughton Centre celebrated another wonderful Graduation Ceremony and Promenade/Ball. It was a resounding success and we are ever so proud of our students. An event like this is only possible through the amazing work of a dedicated group of volunteers. The Grad Parent Executive committee did an incredible job of planning and delivering a wonderful event. To put this in context, our Graduation celebration is the largest single indoor event hosted in our community. It requires planning down to the smallest detail and the support of many people. A huge thank you goes to this committee. I would like to offer my most heartfelt thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped make this a special event. From set-up to clean-up, there was a huge number of parents who helped. I must also thank the staff members at Correlieu and McNaughton. These dedicated professionals give many hours and much effort to help our students enjoy their grad celebrations. We receive incredible support from local businesses (large and small) by way of donations in kind or donations of cash. We could not put on an event like this without that support. Thank you all for your generous support of our students. I would be remiss to not recognize Mrs. Jodie Vliegenthart who is a teacher at Correlieu. For many years she has organized many of the details that the school is responsible for at grad. Among other things, she makes sure the gowns, sashes, caps, diplomas, etc. are all in order and ready to go for the night of grad. Grad happens because of her dedication. Thank you Jodie for your long standing commitment and dedication to honouring our grads. Lastly, I want to share a few comments about our grads. I can’t think of another career that would bring the same sort of satisfaction that mine does. These students, your children keep us young. They challenge us. They make us laugh. Sometimes they even make us cry. Now and then, they certainly make us a little bit crazy. All that being said I wouldn’t want it any other way. This community should be incredibly proud of our grads. They are wonderful young people and I offer my sincere congratulations to the Correlieu secondary and McNaughton Centre Graduating Class of 2015. Our future is in very capable hands. Best wishes. New hand on the tiller at Tillicum Society Friendship Centre

W

hen Sandy Brunton walks out the doors of the Friendship Centre June 30, it will be for the last time. He’s retiring. However, he isn’t leaving with any reservations or concerns as he has utmost confidence in his replacement, Tony Goulet. Goulet has been on the job since June 15, learning all he can from Brunton and getting a feel for his new role as executive director of the Quesnel Tillicum Society Friendship Centre. In the job for five years, Brunton has been in the Quesnel area for 40 years and admits he’s seen a lot of changes in the community. “I was raised in Ontario and had very little awareness of First Nations issues or its people,” he said. “When my career took me into the prison system then the probation system and interaction with inmates, I began to gain an understanding of First Nations issues. Then when I moved to B.C., I actively sought out more and more awareness.” Brunton said once he retired from probation, he agreed to temporarily step into the executive director position and now almost six years later, he’s finally retiring for good. For Goulet, being of Metis descent, First Nations issues are his heritage. His family has also been involved with the Friendship Centre almost from it’s inception. Personally, Goulet brings extensive background with the Metis Association

in Quesnel and holds a business management diploma. When the old adage comes up, if you want something done, ask a busy person, they must have been talking about Tony Goulet. He has a private job, is the longtime president of the Metis Association, is an elected school trustee, a father and husband and now executive director of the Friendship Centre. Taking over where Brunton leaves off, hasn’t intimidated Goulet, he knows the staff are first rate, that the organization is in good shape thanks to Brunton, and they have a plan going into the future. Quesnel’s Friendship Centre is part of

a provincial and national association of friendship centres and as such receives funding through those channels. With checks and balances in place, each friendship centre is held accountable for maintaining the high standards of operation demanded by the national level. Quesnel Friendship Centre is currently running at capacity in terms of programs, staff and facility utilization. One of Brunton’s final tasks was to see the completion of Phase I of revitalization, Goulet is optimistic they can embark on Phase II which would see expansion of the facility in order to add

programs and services. Currently there are 16 staff, up from when Brunton took over almost six years ago. The priorities Goulet is focusing on include First Nations employment; recovering heritage, pride and culture; mental health programs; moving plans forward with a close connection and consultation with local input. “We’re looking at culture-based, elderdirected methods of dealing with First Nations issues,” Brunton said. “I quote one First Nations response to this issue, ‘We know how to help our own people, we just need support.’” Goulet admits he has big shoes to fill, but believes it will be a smooth transition. “The staff are really helpful and they seem pleased the new executive director is so well known in the community,” he said with a smile. “I feel good about the direction our community is going in terms of coming together, listening to each other in a kind and open way.” But he does caution there’s no shortage of issues that could and should be addressed. “Many friendship centres across the country are involved with affordable housing and we’ve had discussions about this here. Possibly down the road we may tackle that in some way,” Goulet said. Brunton is confident about turning the reins over to someone younger with more energy and ideas. But he reminded Goulet he’s not leaving the community and if he can help with the transition as Goulet wades deeper and deeper into the job, he’s happy to.

Ten Mile VFD ready for action

Just three months ago Ten Mile volunteer fire department was in dire straights and thought it might have to close it doors due to lack of volunteer fire fighters. However, thanks to assistance for Cariboo Regional District who held a public meet March 18 with accompanying mail outs to all the local residents inviting them

to come to the hall and see what it was up against, the fire department went from 11 members to 27 members. This took a lot of hard work and commitment but now the members have all achieved the necessary training to once again be a fully volunteered fire fighting team.

The Ten Mile VFD were put back on full duty June 19, just three months after almost closing. The CRD manager of protective services remarked how proud she is with the team and couldn’t believe how well they did as a team of positive-minded volunteers. “We would still like to

have a few more come out and see what we do and join the ranks to help provide a highly-appreciated service to the community,” Ten Mile VFD chief Danny Keeler said. “The Ten Mile VFD would also like to thank the Barlow Creek VFD for helping with coverage while we rebuilt our team.”

The family of Leona Maxine Blacklaw sadly announce her passing after a lengthy illness on May 31/2015 in Prince George BC at the age of 75. A little kibitzing and a lot of hard work was a strategy for success at the employment workshop.

with Lee-Anne Williams B.Sc. (Pharm) Magnesium is involved in over 300 chemical reactions in our bodies. These reactions affect heart rhythm, our bones and our immune system. The average adult female needs 420mg daily (310mg for men). We get some magnesium from our food but many people are still deficient. Supplements are helpful here. A new baby in the family? Congratulations! Just a reminder to keep the child on his back in the crib, don’t use a blankets and pillows and dress the baby in a one-piece sleeper. Also keep soft toys and other objects out of the sleep area and don’t let anyone smoke around the baby. New babies should sleep in an area near where the parents sleep but NOT with the parents. All these suggestions will minimize SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Even though electronic cigarettes are not legal for sale in Canada, some people still use them. One of the problems with these devices is that there is no regulations about what they contain besides the liquid nicotine. E-cigarettes are relatively new so there is a lack of long-term scientific evidence to support their safety. There still is concern that their use will lead to nicotine addiction. Workshop focuses on non-traditional job-seeking skills Frontline workers from Quesnel, Williams Lake, 100 Mile House and Prince George recently gathered in Quesnel at the Best Western Plus Tower Inn to attend a workshop on employment for adults with disabilities and other barriers. Chris Arnold, (Provincial Networking Group Inc.), featured speaker, taught a non-traditional job finding method. What do you do when you look for a job? Traditional methods of job finding include checking the classifieds, pounding the pavement, handing out resumes and now, on-line searching. This traditional way of job hunting places you in direct competition with other job

seekers. It is a contest of sorts with the prize of a job offer presented to the person with the best qualifications and experience and the most winning personality. Most of us have stood in this queue many, many times. Now, consider what you would experience if you were a person with a disability (or some other form of barriers such as cultural, socio-economic) competing for employment against abled-bodied job seekers in this traditional approach? Chances are you would not have the education, qualifications and experience as those with whom you are competing against. This puts you at a sig-

nificant disadvantage and makes it hard to compete for available jobs. The unemployment rate in B.C is 6.1 per cent but for those with disabilities and other barriers the unemployment rate is more than 50 per cent. With high unemployment rates, a different approach to job creation is needed. Those who attended the workshop learned new skills and methods to gain access to employment where traditional paths of job finding often lead to a dead-end. Participants were challenged to think outside of the box, use creativity and innovation to help individuals find employment.. Employment is so vital to

the well being of every individual and the community at large: It offers hope, a sense of belonging, inclusion and purposefulness. Without it, people become detached from community and suffer symptoms of stress, anxiety and physical unwellness. Quesnel ranks as one the best places in the province of B.C. for community inclusiveness. They want to work. They are ready to work. Together we can support these unique individuals to be productive members of society and to make positive contributions to the community they (and we) call home. – submitted by Tim Hall

Quesnel athletes place well at Burnaby Track and field ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter Nineteen Special Olympics athletes and coaches travelled to Burnaby to join nearly 250 athletes in action June 12 at the track and field meet hosted by Special Olympics B.C. Quesnel athletes competed well and brought home not only personal bests in many cases but also placing in many of their events. Jerman Severeid’s second long jump attempt of 4.45m was a personal best and third best over, however it was eclipsed by his third attempt but that was disqualified because of literally a toe over the line. He also placed first in running long jump, first in shot put and second in 800m. Cheyenne Janes places first in standing long jump and second in 100m. forward to gaining skills and experience from each other. “In the sport of boxing, good sportsmanship is encouraged as well as respect and the ability to be gracious whether winning or losing,” 2 Rivers Boxing Club’s Wally Dorn said. “And these two box-

ers lived up to that standard.” Despite giving all he had to the bout, Lee came up slightly short with Patterson winning by a unanimous decision. “Olin lost a hardfought decision. He boxed a hard, exciting contest and gave it his all but Noah

was victorious,” Dorn said. “This isn’t the first contest between these two boxers and Olin is closing the gap in performance and skills. In the points system Noah scored slightly more points but Olin also scored well.” There are plenty

of bouts slated for the fall season and 2 Rivers Boxing Club’s Rumble #19 is scheduled for Nov. 7 at the club in West Park Mall. “2 Rivers will be open during the summer for fitness and boxing training where you’ll find Olin training hard,” Dorn said.

Spending caps recommended for local elections TOM FLETCHER Black Press

province, said the limits are aimed to make running for local government “accessible and affordable,” while recognizing the vast difference between political campaigns in large cities and those in small communities.

The spending limits still have to be endorsed by the legislature, but the B.C. Liberal and NDP members of the committee endorsed them unanimously. They are part of a series of local election reforms that included

extending terms to four years. The committee wants third-party advertisers limited to five per cent of what a mayoral candidate is allowed to spend. The spending limits would be in effect starting on Jan. 1 of

each election year. B.C. is joining Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador in placing spending limits on at least some of their local elections.

Candidates for a council seat in a small community should be able to spend no more than $10,000 to run for mayor and $5,000 for a council or school board seat, says a legislature committee on local election financing. For larger communities, a population-based formula would limit a mayoral campaign for a city of 150,000 residents to just under $90,000, with other municipal candidates limited to half that. The formula would limit a candidate for mayor of Victoria,

Fired drug researchers press for answers TOM FLETCHER Black Press Premier Christy Clark says an independent inquiry into the firing of eight health ministry contractors may be too long and costly, but the public deserves answers in the long-running controversy “in a very timely and cost-effective way.” The B.C. Liberal government has been on the defensive since the abrupt dismissal in 2012 of university researchers assessing drugs for eligibility under the province’s Pharmacare program. One fired contractor committed suicide, another is suing the government for wrongful dismissal and the remainder have been paid settlements and reinstated. An independent review by labour lawyer Marcia McNeil last year failed to determine who made key decisions and why. McNeil said restricted terms of her review and a lack of documents showing the sequence of decisions left her unable to determine accountability. The health ministry initially said a confidential database of B.C. patients who had taken various drugs had been misused and some of the researchers appeared to have conflicts of interest. After Clark downplayed the suggestion of a public inquiry in Vancouver this week, NDP leader John Horgan said her actions indicate the government has something to hide. “We need to be able to compel testimony,” Horgan said. “We need to ensure that we’re protecting those public servants who might have something to say about this process.” The affected employees released an open letter to Health Minister Terry Lake this week, calling for an inquiry that covers the legal costs of everyone affected. They said the program to assess the safety and effectiveness of prescription drugs has saved B.C. more than $100 million over the past 20 years. Horgan said the opposition will continue its campaign for answers when the B.C. legislature convenes July 13 to consider a development agreement for a liquefied natural gas export facility at Prince Rupert.
