12th annual event will facilitate discussions about Thomas King, Mary Sharratt, Audrey Thomas and Arno Kopecky. WILL JOHNSON West Kootenay Advertiser

Inset: Author and environmentalist Arno Kopecky will be the author in attendance at this year’s Kootenay Book Weekend from September 18 to 20. Attendees will discuss his book The Oil Man and the Sea. — image credit: Web photo

If you want to participate in the annual 12th annual Kootenay Book Weekend, there are four titles you should endeavour to read before September 18—Daughters of the Witching Hill by Mary Sharrat, The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King, Local Customs by Audrey Thomas and The Oil Man and the Sea by Arno Kopecky. “I haven’t read them all yet, but I’m working on it,” said secretary Susan Faye, who said she’s thrilled that this year they’re introducing non-fiction to the lineup. “That’s something we’ve never done before, but this year two of the titles are non-fiction,” she said, noting she’s partway through The Inconvenient Indian and she’s heard rave reviews of Kopecky, who will be the author in attendance. Faye said he’s a perfect fit for a Kootenay audience, as he’s an activist journalist engaged in environmentalist issues, and on Sunday morning he will facilitate an hourlong talk about his experiences traveling up the coast with photojournalist Ilja Herb on a 41-foot sailboat from Sidney to Kitimat. In the Oil Man and the Sea Kopecky explores the geography as well as the social and environmental concerns surrounding the Northern Gateway Project. “This fragile, complex ecosystem is among the last great wilderness areas on earth, and as they discover, no place for oil tankers,” reads the press release. The event begins on Friday at the Best Western Inn at 6 p.m., where there will be a discussion of King’s book as well as a social, cash bar, games and prizes. It will be followed on Saturday by a 9:45 a.m. discussion of Sharratt’s work, followed by a lunch. Then it will pick up again for a discussion of Thomas’ book at 7 p.m. On Sunday there will be an information meeting at 9 a.m., followed by Kopecky’s talk and a wind-up lunch. “He’s a wonderful journalist and I think anyone interested in these issues will find his talk fascinating,” she said. She said the weekend has been growing in popularity, something they’d like to see continue. “Last year we had about 48 attendees, and we’ve had as many as 60 in the past,” said Faye, who urged participants to register early so they know how many to expect. Attendees can also bring gently used books to donate to the townie table. The cost for the weekend is $95 For more information visit kootenaybookweekend.ca.

Regional partners are making no bones about it — they will not be giving $550,000 to the BC SPCA for a new facility in Trail. “It’s not that we don’t support the SPCA,” says Grace McGregor, RDBK board chair. “It’s that money is tight and sometimes we have to make these decisions whether we want to or not.” With the organization slated to close its current shelter on Highway 3B by June 2016, the BC SPCA proposed a series of replacement options to the Regional District of Kootenay

It’s that money is tight and sometimes we have to make these decision whether we want to or not. Grace McGregor

Boundary (RDKB) board directors earlier this year. Most costly, was a half millionplus joint venture with the regional district. The potential project included building a $1.6 million adoption, education, and limited veterinary service centre on Old Waneta Road acreage the non-profit already owns. Not only was new construction nixed, but so was the suggestion of bringing more vet operations to town. Reviewing the matter fell to a four-member subcommittee from Rossland, Warfield, Trail and Fruitvale, and its list of recommendations were brought to and approved by the

board at Thursday’s meeting. “The subcommittee did an awful lot of work on this and I commend them,” said MacGregor. “This is a passionate thing because we care about our animals and everyone else’s animals, and we want them looked after.” Sitting as a smaller group, or subcommittee, means all documentation, avenues and possibilities are explored before recommendations pass and decisions are made, she noted. “They weighed everything when they looked at this,” MacGregor continued. “And as a board we felt the way it was presented, we made an informed decision.”

In the shadow of the towering Valhalla Mountains in the Slocan Valley, post-secondary students and educators are meticulously documenting the human history of our region that stretches back more than 3,000 years. The Slocan Narrows Archaeological Project is once again bustling with activity along the shores of the Slocan River, just north of Lemon Creek. Funded through Hamilton College in central New York—with support from the Slocan Valley Rail Trail, Columbia Basin Trust, the local Sinixt people and Selkirk College—the six-week archeological field school has nine students, three teaching assistants and two project coordinators carefully digging through an amazing array of pithouses that provide vital links to the past. “This site is important because the Slocan River is one of the last un-dammed rivers in the Upper Columbia system,” explains Dr. Nathan Goodale, Associate Professor of Anthropology the Hamilton College who is co-directing the project. “The fact that this site exists is signifi-

cant because it’s probably the last big cluster of pithouses remaining in this area. It’s also significant because of the amount of knowledge that we have gained from it, it has intact deposits and is relatively undisturbed.” Work on the Slocan Narrows Pithouse Village has been taking place since 2000 when archeologists from the University of Montana and University of Lethbridge began the process of mapping out and exploring the footprints of the past. Almost 40 housepits have been identified and radiocarbon dating has revealed that four different periods of occupation exist stretching from approximately 3,105 years ago to the late 18th Century. An Important Link to Our Present Goodale was a graduate student at the University of Montana when he got involved in the project during its first year while he was studying under Dr. Anna Prentiss. That work continued when he was a graduate student at Washington State University where he met Alissa Nauman. The couple moved onto Hamilton College where they have been running the field school since 2009. Both Goodale and Nauman have made the field school a major part of their academic lives and every year are excited to peel away the layers of the past so they can put together a more accurate picture of what life was like for the people who lived in the village. “For people who live on this landscape today, it’s important to be able to look at that landscape a little differently and know that people have been here for a very long time,” says Nauman, Instructor of Anthropology at Hamilton College. “That is also important to how it relates to contemporary Aboriginal issues. It’s important to share and make people aware

Dr. Nathan Goodale (left) and Alissa Nauman (right) at the Slocan Narrows Pithouse Village where the Slocan Narrows Archaeological Project has been taking place since mid-June. of what has been here.” This summer, students and teaching assistants are carefully digging into three different pithouses. As with previous field schools, participants are discovering mostly stone tools which were the predominant means by which people made a living in the past. From small stone chips to larger tools used for hunting, scraping and cutting, the humanmade objects help provide important insight into the lives of the people who lived along the river. The people of the Interior Northwest relied heavily on fish, especially anadromous salmon. The Slocan Valley inhabitants were no different and lived during a time when the fish traveled up the Upper Columbia River to the tributaries like the Slocan River. Other evidence uncovered over the years has indicated that the Aboriginal inhabitants of the village also relied on trapping beaver, hunting deer and elk, and subsisted on wild roots like camas. Selkirk College Provides Connection to Region Selkirk College students have been involved in two previous field schools in 2011 and 2013. This year Mike Graeme and Allysa Webber are getting their hands dirty with Hamilton College students who hail from

many different regions of the United States. All students live in a camp near the site and spend the entire six weeks immersed in the project. Along with the daily task of excavation and documentation, guest speakers are brought in to provide a deeper understanding of the importance of the work being done. “The partnership is important because Selkirk College helps bring awareness to the broader region about what we are doing,” says Goodale. “Having local students is really valuable and we are grateful to have these students participating.” Both Webber and Graeme grew up in the region. Webber recently completed her third year in the Selkirk College School of University Arts & Sciences and Graeme transferred to the University of Victoria this past January after getting his start on a BA in Environmental Studies and Anthropology at the Castlegar Campus. “One of the important aspects of having our students involved is they become the cultural translator for the area and tell the stories of the area that you wouldn’t be able to get any other way,” says Selkirk College Anthropology Instructor Lori Barkley, who helps facilitate the ongoing partnership with Hamilton College. Education Goes Be-

yond the Field School The public’s fascination with the past is not lost on Goodale and Nauman which is why they have been making a strong effort to bring both young and old to visit. As was the case in 2013, the site has received several visits from school and community groups over the last few weeks. That aspect of the project will climax on July 12 with the Archaeology Open House which invites anybody interested to visit the site. “The archeology belongs to everyone and we are very excited to be able to come here on a regular basis to learn more,” says Nauman. “An important part of that is sharing with the public what’s going on here. It’s on a public rail trail and provides a great opportunity to share our research results and what was going on here in the distant past.” The open house will take place between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on July 12. The Slocan Narrows Pithouse Village can be found by taking Highway 6 north from Winlaw. Cross Lemon Creek and then look for Lindsay Road where signs will be set up to indicate parking. Wearing comfortable shoes and packing bug spray is recommended. Find out more about Selkirk College’s School of University Arts & Sciences at selkirk.ca/ uas.

Cycling the height of Everest Liz Bevan West Kootenay Advertiser

Two cyclists are planning to bike the equivalent of the elevation of Mount Everest, raising money and awareness for a disease that hits close to home. On July 4, Jaime Frederick from Nelson and Brian Marsh, Castlegar resident and Teck Trail Operations employee, will be riding their bikes 8,848 vertical metres, the height of Mount Everest, on the Kootenay Pass. It is all to raise money for Scleroderma, a disease the hardens the skin and the organs, and one that Frederick’s mother suffers with. The Kootenay Pass is the highest all-weather pass in Canada and reaches 1,774 vertical metres, a long ride to the top. Frederick says he was inspired to do the ride from his

mother’s struggle with Scleroderma – a tough illness that has no cure. “My mother’s strength in battling scleroderma has inspired me to choose only the most difficult endurance challenge I could conceive to raise awareness about this terrible disease,” says Frederick. “Among road cyclists, suffering is almost a mystique. But whatever self-inflicted pain we might experience or mythologize on the bike, it pales in comparison to the suffering of those with scleroderma.” To reach their goal of biking the same height as the world’s tallest mountain, Frederick and Marsh will be making the ascent on the Kootenay Pass eight times in one day. It is referred to in the cycling world as a doublecentury, which means biking 200 miles in 24 hours. The cyclists estimate they can finish

all eight trips up the pass in 16 hours. While he isn’t personally affected by Scleroderma, Marsh is supporting his friend and family by attempting the feat. He is looking forward to the challenge, but doesn’t have any huge expectations. “(Can it be done?) That remains to be seen,” he said. “I have biked 300 km before, but never so much uphill.” The riders will set off early on the morning of July 4, to complete the climb and hope to raise at least one dollar for every metre for a total of $8,848 with all money raised going directly to research the disease. To learn how to donate to the riders, or to learn more about Scleroderma, go to http://www. scleroderma.ca/How-Can-IHelp/Upcoming-SclerodermaEvents.php.

Unit No. 5 to McRann to acknowledge his mentorship and leadership qualities not only an employee but as a person. The plaque reads: “His passion for construction, quality and teamwork inspired us all. Bud’s teachings will con-

McRann was a resident of Nelson for 23 years. In addition to working for BC Hydro, he was a manager with a number of the highway maintenance contractors, including BEL Maintenance, VSA and YRB.
