An annual Cranbrook tradition is the presentation of the Canada Day Citizenship Awards to deserving youth, and on Wednesday, July 1, at the Moir Park Canada Day celebrations, Acting Cranbrook Mayor Norma Blissett handed out the awards to nine students — three from Laurie Middle School, three from Parkland and three from Mount Baker Secondary. The students so honoured have, through their efforts, made Cranbrook and their schools better places. After the on-stage presentations, the mayor and students gathered for a group photo. Fire centre forecasts hot, dry days ahead C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Hot and dry, with a potential for thunder and lightning, accompanied by high winds, is the weather forecast for the weekend. With that in mind, the folks at the Southeast Fire Centre are really hoping East and West Kootenay campers respect the campfire ban which went into effect at 11 a.m. today. Crews are in the mop up stages of a 2.8 hectare fire on the Lost Dog Forest Service Road north of Kimberley, said Jordan Turner of the Southeast Fire Centre.

“It’s been contained,” he said Thursday morning. “Fire fighters are walking it looking for hot spots. There is also one initial attack crew at a spot fire near Jaffray, Baynes Lake. That is not yet contained. But that is all we have in the Kimberley, Cranbrook area.” “With the hot, dry weather and the potential for lightning, we are hoping people will be extra careful and remember the campfire ban. We are looking at hot and dusty through next week.” Thus far in the fire season there have been 129 fires in the southeast area compared to 22 last year. “Of that 47 were human-caused and therefore preventable,” Turner said. “When we respond to human-caused fires, we have less resources for lightning caused fires.” There has been a lot more fire activity in the West Kootenay in the past week as lightning went through. Turner says the East Kootenay should expect more lightning this Saturday according to their forecasts. The Southeast Fire
Centre covers the area extending from the U.S. border in the south to Mica Dam in the north and from the Okanagan Highlands and Monashee Mountains in the west to the B.C.-Alberta border in the east. It includes the Selkirk Forest District and the Rocky Mountain Forest District. To report a wildfire or
open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 tollfree or *5555 on a cellphone. Anyone found in contravention of a fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345, required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail.

Calgary man drowns in Columbia Lake Ke vin Nimmock Columbia Valley Pioneer
A 32-year-old Calgary man drowned in the north-west end of Columbia Lake on June 28th after his canoe capsized. Ryan Bjolverud, a third year firefighter, had been camping with family and friends near Fairmont Hot Springs. Mr Bjolverud and a friend decided to go fishing at 4 a.m, paddling approximately 200 metres offshore before their canoe suddenly turned over. “As the firefighter was not a strong swimmer, his friend attempted to swim back in with the canoe and him in tow,” RCMP Cpl. Grant Simpson said. “When the friend noticed the firefighter struggling to keep on the surface, he attempted to help him, but this became too exhaust-
ing.” After Mr. Bjolverud was unable to resurface, the friend swam to shore and called 911. The Columbia Valley RCMP arrived on location at 5:50 a.m. The waters and shoreline were searched, but Mr. Bjolverud was not located until hours later. The B.C. Coroners Service has since joined the RCMP in handling the investigation into the accident. Neither Mr. Bjolverud or his friend were wearing life jackets when their canoe capsized. Mr. Simpson said there is an important lesson to be learned from this tragic accident. “I think this just really highlights the importance of making use of the life jackets while boating,” Mr. Simpson said. “Things can go sideways in a matter of
seconds.” In addition, Mr. Simpson said alcohol was a major contributing factor for what occurred. The Coroners Service has yet to complete an autopsy. Carol Henke, a public information officer for the Calgary Fire Department, said the news of Mr. Bjolverud’s death has been hard to come to grips with for the whole department. “This is very devastating for the whole fire department family,” Ms. Henke said. “He absolutely loved the job, loved being a firefighter, and was extremely committed and enthusiastic.” City councillors in Calgary paid tribute to Mr. Bjolverud with a moment of silence prior to the regular council meeting on June 30th.
Public wants distracted driving fines increased Tom Fletcher Black Press
Halfway through a consultation on distracted driving policy, the vast majority of B.C. residents who have responded want fines increased. Justice Minister Suzanne Anton says thousands of people have participated on the B.C. government’s consultation website, and more than 90 per cent want
stronger action to stop people talking or texting on their phones while they’re behind the wheel. The issue now is how high the fines should go. “British Columbians are also telling us they want to see tougher escalating penalties for repeat offenders, because right now some people see the $167 ticket as the cost of doing business,” Anton said Tuesday.
“We need to stop that.” B.C.’s fine is the second lowest in Canada, and a three-point insurance penalty was added last fall. Anton said she doesn’t intend to follow Ontario’s lead and put the fine up to $1,000 for repeat offenders, but an increase will be coming within a year. Comments on the website www.gov.bc.ca/ distracteddriving continue to debate the mer-
its of seizing cellphones from drivers, but Anton reiterated that option is not being considered. Suspending licences or impounding vehicles of repeat offenders is on the table, however. Saskatchewan impounds the vehicle for a week if the driver gets two distracted driving tickets less than a year apart. The consultation continues until July 16. Participants are asked to
reply to nine questions. The crowd-sourcing exercise has its weaknesses. Only five per cent of respondents have come from the B.C. Interior, and Anton said younger people are also under-represented. The province attributes 88 deaths to distracted driving last year, second to speeding and ahead of impaired driving.

Living Christianity in the present

I also believe it has become it’s going to be like having been set on fire, immensely popular, not because it’s true, except you’re never going to die from it. but because it’s easy. The whole planet is destined for hell. Before the invention of this end–times As I said, “eternity insurance.” There’s fanaticism, Christians were busy trying to no escaping it. This is truly good news. But since Darby’s teaching, things went downhill quickly. One person told me, “I remember taking part in a mission trip to the former Soviet Union a year or so after the fall of communism. The economy was in shambles; people were hungry, unemployed and depressed. What did we bring them? Bibles! Skits telling people they needed the Lord. Our whole mission was to find a translator and get as many people as possible to ask Jesus into their hearts before moving on to the next place.” It seems to me that that’s a whole lot easier than a mission of living with people and helping to fix those things that are tearing people’s lives apart. Tell them what you think they need, and then move on to the next location. What I’ve learned as an adult is that the good news is not about escaping the world. It’s about transforming it. It’s about the incredibly hard work of getting down into the muck of life with others and helping to clean it up. It’s about working with people so that we might be agents of reconciliation. The message of Jesus is never—never— about raptures, escaping, or even going to heaven when we die. The message of Jesus is always—always—that the Kingdom of God has come, and that we are being invited to enter in and live in that reality right now. The Kingdom of God is not something future. It’s about abundant life in this moment, in this place, at this time. That’s not easy. It is, however, faithful. It is a life worth living. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Anglican Church in Cranbrook.

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar
ARIES (March 21-April 19) You have a lot to say, and you want others to hear you. Try incorporating more originality into the conversation. A friend could feel a bit awkward about a project you both are involved in. Don’t let the gawkiness interfere with the bond. Tonight: Let your imagination rule. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Listen to news, and be ready to make a decision that might cause some tension. This matter could revolve around the community or your work. Stay centered. Use caution when spending money on your home or on a family member. Tonight: Let the party begin! GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You have the ability to see beyond the obvious. As a result, when you give a presentation, everyone focuses on what you are saying. Use caution with spending, and explain in a clear way why you might need to say “no.”Tonight: Take off and try out a new spot.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Deal with a loved one on a oneon-one level. Your points will be well-received, and you can have a discussion that you probably had been avoiding. You might have felt vulnerable as of late, but you will determine that you are on friendly turf. Tonight: Let the good times roll. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You add punch to everyone’s day. You know what you want, but getting it could take some talent. You deal with very stubborn people who are determined to be right. Zero in on a long-term desire that you have wanted to make a reality. Tonight: Where you friends are. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You intuitively know what to do. Pace yourself and recognize that you are not a superhero. Don’t push yourself too hard. Communication revolves around an authority figure or some other person you often defer to. Tonight: Know when to say “enough is enough.” LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Take news with a grain of salt.
Tundra
You are happiest at home, not having to deal with any uproar. Focus on what you enjoy. A child might delight you more than you ever could have imagined. Add that quality of lightness to your other bonds. Tonight: Christen the weekend well. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You could be in the midst of a major change involving a matter you have avoided dealing with. This adjustment is likely to occur in the near future. Focus on a domestic issue. A partner will support you in whatever you want to do. Tonight: Togetherness counts. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Others have a lot to say, so listen closely, and you can meet them halfway. Your logic might be offbeat and a bit unrealistic. No matter what you do, you can’t seem to get everyone to listen to your opinions. Stay upbeat, regardless of the outcome. Tonight: Get into weekend mode. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Use caution with spending. You usually are cautious, but someone knows how to goad you into
spending more. Take your time, and check out an item you have wanted to buy more carefully. You probably are not getting a good deal. Tonight: Have fun! AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Choose not to see a situation as a problem. You might be surprised by how different your perspective could be if you just relax. Listen to what someone else has to share. This person has strong feelings, so make sure you’re ready for that type of interaction. Tonight: Ever playful. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Take your time when making a decision. You might not know which way to go. Your sense of humor emerges when dealing with a child. Consider taking some time off. You need a change of scenery, and you’ll feel much better if you go for a drive. Tonight: Be with a favorite person. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I recently broke up with my boyfriend of two years. I had been having doubts for a few months and one night he took me out for a surprise picnic. On the way to the picnic, I thought he was going to propose and the only thought I had was: “How do I tell him no?” We had a great relationship, but I’m not sure he’s the one I want to spend the rest of my life with. I miss him and feel lonely, but I recognize those feelings don’t mean I’m totally in love with him. My friends say he took the breakup really hard and has been doing poorly since. I feel horrible about it, but I want to be sure I marry “the one.” We have talked since then and he wants to get back together, but I’m not convinced. I’m only 21 and want to experience things myself. He says we can do them together. Did I make the right choice? Should I go back to him? -- Confused in Nebraska Dear Nebraska: We can’t tell you if he’s “the one.” Most relationships aren’t that black-and-white. However, we can see that you aren’t ready to get married. You understand that you are young, that you want to experience things on your own, and that you’d like to play the field a bit more. All of these reasons are quite sensible and we commend you for recognizing that you need more time. No one should feel rushed to marry. It is possible you will discover down the road that your ex-boyfriend is really the guy for you, and (if he is still available) you can commit to him with more confidence. And if he’s not the right guy, you will be happy to have let him go. Dear Annie: My husband retired 10 months ago after 45 years of hard work and a great deal of traveling away from home. Since his retirement, my in-laws have been hounding him to do their home maintenance projects for free. Visiting them is a four-hour drive, and he’d have to find a place to stay because his parents don’t have any extra room. He also has to buy his own meals. He really doesn’t want to do this. The last project he did for them took twice as long as it was supposed to because they kept interrupting him to talk about their dogs and grandchildren. My husband has his own projects that he wants to complete. So now his parents are mad and keep leaving messages about what they want done. Please help. -- Need an Island Dear Need: First of all, this is your husband’s problem to fix, not yours. Don’t try to run interference for him or reinforce the idea that his parents are taking advantage. It seems to us that they want his company, as well as his expertise. How often does he visit otherwise? This could be their way of ensuring his presence. If he chooses to continue helping, please be supportive. And should he decide not to do so, he needs to be the one to tell them. Your best bet is to stay neutral. But you might suggest he look into hiring someone to work on these projects, and it might even be worth his while to help finance them. He was born, in New Westminster, BC on October 27, 1986, to parents Bev Warrilow and Pat O’Connell. Byron graduated in 2004 from Grand Forks Secondary School in Grand Forks, BC. He then went on to the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook, BC to achieve his first year apprenticeship as an Automotive Technician. Through Geddes Ford in Cranbrook, he was sent to SAIT in Calgary, AB to continue his education. He and Toni Keller had a beautiful son, Cohen, together in 2012 who Byron loved with all his heart. Byron worked as an Automotive Technician from the time he graduated from the College of the Rockies until 3 years ago when he decided he enjoyed mechanics as more of a hobby. He then started on a new path as part of a Surveying team. He enjoyed this line of work as he got to be outside quadding, snowmobiling and catching the odd helicopter ride. He had goals to climb the ladder in this field. Byron loved camping, fishing and driving back roads to see where they might lead. He also loved spending time visiting with family and friends. Byron will be sadly missed by son, Cohen; Cohen’s mom, Toni Keller and her family; parents, Bev Warrilow (Lance), Pat and Lola O’Connell; sister, Ashley Schadeck; brother-in-law, Jesse Schadeck; and his beautiful nieces, Josie and Avery whom he shared a special bond. He has MANY friends as well as Aunts, Uncles and cousins that will also greatly miss him. There will be a service at Westlawn Cemetery in Cranbrook, BC on Tuesday, July 7th at 1:30 pm.
We will invest your gift wisely. We will carry out your wishes. We will ensure your gift has lasting impact. We will honour your generosity. The loss of a loved one is a time of profound sadness. We offer our condolences. When the time is right, we would be honoured to help you to ensure the legacy of your loved one is felt in our community forever. 250.426.1119 www.cranbrookcf.ca

Former Ice forward Max Reinhart on the move Calgary Flames trade eldest brother to Nashville Predators in exchange for conditional draft pick
Taylor Rocc a
Former Kootenay Ice forward Max Reinhart is set to get a fresh start. Reinhart, 23, was traded by the Calgary Flames to the Nashville Predators Wednesday afternoon and shortly after, he signed a oneyear, two-way contract worth $575,000 (at the NHL level) with his new club. “We want to thank Max and wish him well,” said Brad Treliving, Calgary Flames general manager, via Twitter on Wednesday. “We wanted to give him an opportunity elsewhere.” The Flames received a conditional fourth-
round pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Reinhart. Reinhart’s deal is worth $80,000 at the American League (AHL) level.
The native of North Vancouver became a restricted free agent July 1 after his entry-level contract expired and he was provided a qualifying offer from the Flames. The 6-foot-1 forward played 23 NHL games, tallying one goal and five points, after the Flames
selected him with the 64th-overall pick in the third round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Over 203 games with Flames’ AHL affiliates in Abbotsford and Adirondack, Reinhart registered 45 goals and 125 points. Reinhart began his path to professional hockey after the Kootenay Ice selected him with the 86th pick in the fourth round of the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft. He went on to suit up in 266 games with the Ice, tallying 94 goals and 235 points. Reinhart was a member of Kootenay’s 2011 WHL Championship squad.
Former Ice goalie Lieuwen returns to Sabres Taylor Rocc a
Former Kootenay Ice goaltender Nathan Lieuwen is back with the Buffalo Sabres organization. On Wednesday afternoon, Lieuwen, 23, signed the qualifying offer extended to him, ensuring he will remain with the Sabres organization for at least one more season. According to Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports in Montreal, the two-way deal is worth $605,000 at the NHL level. Lieuwen’s contract will see him make an estimated $60,500 at the American League (AHL) level. The native of Abbotsford became a restricted free agent July 1 after his
entry-level contract expired and he was provided a qualifying offer from the Sabres.
The 6-foot-5, 185pound netminder played seven games for the Sabres during the 2013-14 season, going 1-4-0 with a 2.98 goalsagainst average (GAA) and .906 save percentage (SP). The 2014-15 season saw Lieuwen spend his time with the Sabres’ AHL affiliate in Rochester. In 16 games, Lieuw-
en went 4-9-0 with a 3.29 GAA and .883 SP. His playing time was limited as he battled concussion-related vision issues. Lieuwen’s road to the big league started in Cranbrook after the Kootenay Ice made him the 16th-overall selection at the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft. In 178 career games with the Ice, Lieuwen registered a mark of 8559-15 with a 2.77 GAA and .903 SP. In 2011, he helped lead the Kootenay Ice to the Ed Chynoweth Cup, capturing the WHL Playoff MVP award with a record of 16-3 (2.24 GAA, .923 SP).
Former Ice forward Matt Fraser signs with Jets Taylor Rocc a
Former Kootenay Ice forward Matt Fraser is on the move once again. Fraser, 25, has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets. Fraser’s new deal is worth $650,000 at the NHL level and $325,000 at the American League level. The signing of Fraser was announced Thursday. The Jets become Fraser’s fourth NHL team since 2011. The native of Red Deer signed with the Dallas Stars as an un-
drafted free agent following the 2010-11 WHL season before being dealt to the Boston Bruins on July 4, 2013. On Dec. 29, 2014, the Edmonton Oilers claimed the 6-foot-1, 203-pound forward off waivers from the Bruins. Fraser was set to become a restricted free agent following the 201415 season, but after the Oilers failed to extend him a qualifying offer, he became an unrestricted free agent July 1. In 87 career NHL games, Fraser has tallied 11 goals and 16 points.
The 2010 WHL Humanitarian of the Year skated in 265 career WHL games, split between the Kootenay Ice and Red Deer Rebels. He entered the league full-time in 200708, playing five games with the Rebels before landing with the Ice. Over his WHL career, Fraser amassed 87 goals and 173 points. He was a member of Kootenay’s WHL championship squad in 2011. The Rebels drafted Fraser in the ninth round (172nd overall) of the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft.
