Smoke continued to affect the Comox Valley and the entire south coast of B.C. Monday after several forest fires broke out on the weekend. The Tsulquate Creek fire that started Friday near Port Hardy experienced “minimal growth” Sunday, according to the BC Wildlife Service. “The evacuation order has been downgraded to an alert,” Ellie Dupont at the Coastal Fire Centre said Monday. A one-hectare spot fire from a burning ember that was within 400 metres of homes was contained Monday. The larger 16-hectare fire had been 20 per cent contained along the portion closest to the town. “The crews are working to remove fuels from the fire line on the sides that are closest to the community — and there’s a lot of smoke,” Dupont said. “The helicopters, which there are four, will continue bucketing today. Fire behaviour has been decreased to Rank 1, which is smouldering ground.” Another fire that broke out Saturday on Dog Mountain on Sproat Lake near Port Alberni continued to “burn aggressively” Sunday as it neared cabins. It covered about 35 hectares. Retardant dropped by air tankers and water dropped by helicopters slowed the blaze, but cabins at the lake were evacuated. One cabin was burning Monday morning. “We heard overnight that it was lost,” Dupont said. “It had been empty for two to three years apparently.” See FIRES, Page 9

IN BRIEF Raven loses another shareholder
Another major shareholder has cut ties with Compliance Energy Corporation and the proposed Raven Coal Mine project in the Fanny Bay area. Compliance announced LG International Corporation of Korea, which owns 20 per cent of the proposed coal mine, has backed out of the project. In 2013 a Japanese firm - Itochu Corporation - withdrew its 20 per cent stake. Compliance has applied unsuccessfully on two separate occasions for a mining application for the site. The Environmental Assessment Office rejected an application in May of 2013 and earlier this year Compliance withdrew a second application, citing “misconceptions about the project.”

Simon’s Cycles YANA Ride returns When 10-year-old Anna spent significant time away from home receiving treatment for kidney cancer, she was separated from her mom and brothers who visited when they could. Anna’s dad was with her in Vancouver. Anna’s mother, Hendrika, credits YANA’s financial support and the use of their apartments for keeping the family together. “A sick child has a huge impact on family-life, the stress, your kid in pain, sick, struggling and sad, it’s a lot of emotion,” said Henricka. “What a blessing to know that the community supports YANA and therefore you. It’s a big help mentally as well as financially.” That’s precisely why cyclists will be heading to Comox’s Marina Park on August 16. “I rode because family is everything to me, I would do anything for my own daughter, and I am honoured to help other families in their time of need,” said Shannon Colthorpe, one of last year’s riders. “I felt proud to finish, and be part of such a great local fundraiser. It’s all fun, there’s no pressure to go fast, and the satisfaction of the ride is worth every ache and pain I felt the next day.” The Simon’s Cycles YANA Ride is
With the support of the Downtown Courtenay Business Improvement Association the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market is bringing back the Midweek Farmers’ Market on England Ave. this summer. More than 25 vendors converge in downtown Courtenay for this handy midweek morning market. This year the Wednesday Market will also be working with local chefs from the North Island Chef’s Association and As you Like It Products and Catering to bring a series of food fests to the Midweek market. These events take product from the farmers at the market and create samples for consumers. Watch the market’s Facebook page for dates. This will be the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market’s third year at the England Ave. location and executive director Vickey Brown says it’s worked well for farmers and customers alike. “We see a whole new crowd at the Wednesday Market,” said Brown. “Lots of folks are keen to get their hands on local food, but can’t get to the market on Saturday, so this is a great opportunity for them to add the market to their downtown shopping excursion.” The Wednesday Market runs from 9 a.m.12:30 p.m. every week until Sept. 2 on England Ave. between 5th and 6th Streets.

CUPE pools dues for huge food bank donation ■ Scott Stanfield scott.stanfield @comoxvalleyrecord.com
Members of CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees) Local 556 pooled their union dues and contributed 70 cases of tinned wild salmon to the Comox Valley Food Bank on Thursday. The union is a member of Protein for People, a community partnership started by unions and the United Way to address protein shortages at B.C.’s food banks. “Our members thought the program was a great way to help provide a healthy addition of protein to the food bank supplies while also providing some variety,” Local 556 president Karen Garrett said. “The protein that wild salmon provides is vital.” In February, Local 556 and other CUPE locals along with the Vancouver Island District Labour Council had donated 12 cases to the food bank. “We spend about $5,000 annually towards local charities,” Garrett said. Local 556 represents about 200 municipal workers from Cumberland, Comox, Courtenay and the regional dis-
trict. It is responsible for providing water, sewer and other services throughout the Valley. Each year, through members’ union dues, the Local donates to local charities. “This is a tremendous effort on your part to help the food bank with your donation,” CV Food Bank
vice-president Paul Macknight said to Garrett. “It’s not just the food that represents the people in need, but the idea that you took the time to care enough to reach out to the community.” Each month, the local food bank serves roughly 1,200 people, about three per cent

Fire destroys F&G caretaker’s office ■ Erin Haluschak erin.haluschak @comoxvalleyrecord.com
An early morning fire Thursday at the Courtenay and District Fish and Game Protective Association destroyed the caretaker’s building and a trailer inside. Shortly after 2 a.m., the Cumberland Fire Department received a call for a fully involved canopy with a 25-foot trailer inside of it, explained Fire Chief Mike Williamson. “It was burning, the vehicle in front was burning and the main concern was expo-
sure on the outside and the power lines were burning so the big thing was to get it knocked down on the far side to save that other trailer because everything inside was a total loss upon arrival,” he told CTV Vancouver Island. Witness Stephen Jalbert said he woke up and realized there was a fire. “Everyone was dead asleep. I could faintly hear fire and I thought I was dreaming or something and then it became very real.” Williamson noted around 18 firefighters attended the scene, and as there are not any hydrants in the area, Courtenay Fire Department’s tanker

was brought to the scene for additional water. “It was a quick knockdown and everything went fine. I don’t know why the fire started; we’ll be investigating that later.” He added the association’s caretaker lives in the trailer inside the shed, and believes the fire may have started on the back side office.
The following is the list of winners for the 28th annual Ducky 500: • Joanne Wiley of Courtenay won the grand prize of an Eastern Caribbean Cruise for two adults or $5,000 cash. • Shelagh Lamperson, of Qualicum Beach won a family Disneyland vacation (or $3,500 cash). • Agnes Pilkington of Campbell River won a Las Vegas vacation (or $1,000 cash). • Sara Malbeof of Courtenay won a soft-sided hot tub. • Scott Lyle of Courtenay won a Cuisinart Infrared barbecue. • Dodie Brand of Cumberland won a Swann security system + extra digital camera. • Eric Rasmussen of Courtenay won a TFAL 10-piece pot set. • Greg Wilson won a popcorn market cart • Lorne Toews of Courtenay won a Seiki 32” smart television. • Gene Pearl won a Proscan 7.85 tablet

Mother Nature does not need human help when it comes to starting fires
H
ere it is, the first week of July. Summer isn’t yet two weeks old and already, we’re in the midst of a heatwave with no end in sight. Could it be that the relentlessly hot weather is making our brains soft? Is there another possible explanation why, despite the fact that temperatures have been lingering in the high-20s or low-30s for what feels like forever and despite the lack of rain resulting in desert-like conditions, people are still flicking their butts? Never mind that carelessly discarded cigarettes (or other smoked materials) are litter and are, therefore, disgusting. Under the right conditions — exactly the conditions, coincidentally, that British Columbians find themselves in at the moment — they have almost unlimited potential for destruction. What we can only hope is a small minority of smokers are giving what is already a widely reviled habit, an even worse name. Whether they’re flicked out the window of a car, or dropped and given a half-hearted turn of a heel during a walk, cigarette butts are being discarded without, apparently, so much as a second thought to the property, lives or safety of everyone around them. Last year, 44 per cent of the nearly 1,500 wildfires in British Columbia were “human caused.” That’s not to say they were all caused by cigarette butts and roaches. In fact, the majority were caused by other irresponsible acts, such as campfires left burning, or by hot motors from off-road vehicles. These are all problems; problems that are easily rectified, with the smallest amount of common sense applied. Even before summer officially arrived last week, the province had all but tapped out its wildfire fighting budget for the entire year. Dry lightning storms in the Interior continue to ignite parched vegetation, leaving crews scrambling. Mother Nature doesn’t need any help from humans in that department. But she’s getting it anyway. June’s unrelenting dry heat was certainly out of character for the typically cool and soggy month, but this is hardly the first stretch of hot weather British Columbians have ever seen. We know better. –Black Press
POLITICS
Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau came to Vancouver last week to unveil his environmental platform for the Oct. 19 federal election. Trudeau promised an overhaul of the National Energy Board and a vaguely defined intention to work with provinces to impose a “price” on carbon dioxide emissions across the country. Trudeau’s media tour took him to the Burnaby facilities of General Fusion, where, like Premier Christy Clark a few weeks before, he stood at his podium before a prototype fusion reactor. This massive octopus of pistons and wires is an attempt to capture the nuclear reaction that powers the Sun and other stars, containing its fury within steel walls and magnetic fields. The old joke about controlled fusion is that every 20 years, scientists tell us it’s just 20 years away. If it ever is developed, such a process could quickly put an end to our hand-wringing about fossil fuels, largely replacing them with endless, emission-free energy. This is the type of technological revolution that Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s officials indicat-
and so people won’t voluntarily do the right thing. (The results of the Metro Vancouver transit plebiscite could be interpreted this way, if you ignore the bumbling, waste and political posturing that really did it in.) The Pope concludes that there is “an urgent need” for a “true world political authority” to impose order on the greedy capitalist humans that infest our beautiful planet. Presumably this would be the run by the UN, so my advice is to start hoarding candles and cat food now. B.C.’s frozen carbon tax has ceased to have much effect, with gasoline consumption back up over 2008 levels amid the usual volatility of prices. Gasoline is going for around $1.30 a litre, despite the prolonged slump in crude oil prices, and people have basically forgotten about this tax on top of all the other gas taxes. Perhaps B.C. can brag in Paris about the Pacific Carbon Trust, which limps along after its near-death experience in 2013. The trust continues to divert tax dollars from B.C. government operations to purported carbon-saving activities, including paying coastal First Nations not to log the portions of forests that they demanded be preserved.

ed would be needed, after Canada announced a pledge with other G7 leaders to make their economies carbon-free by 2100. That’s right, some time within the next 85 years. Clark visited General Fusion in May to announce her new climate action advisory panel, which has to give her a plan to take to Paris next December. That’s the next big United Nations climate summit, where Trudeau hopes to lead a delegation of premiers to stop the flow of “fossil awards” given to Canada by people in polar bear suits. Asked about the fusion reactor she had just toured, Clark laughed off the question, comparing it to the “flux capacitor” used for time travel in the Michael J. Fox movie, Back to the Future. Trudeau recently told university students that we need to change our concepts of time and space, and he didn’t seem to be kidding. The point here for voters is that all these leaders, Harper, Trudeau, Clark and many others, are talking down to you. You aren’t sophisticated enough to understand this climate business. The Pope has weighed in, assuring us that carbon trading systems are not going to cut it. This is a rebuke to California, Quebec and the European Union, where effective carbon trading is, like controlled fusion, just around the corner. Pope Francis warned that our “throwaway culture” views nature “solely as a source of profit and gain”

One not ready for prime time, the other past his prime
Dear editor, We’ve seen the Conservative ads saying Justin Trudeau isn’t ready for prime time. If having a political party look like a Hell’s Angels chapter makes you ready for prime time politics in our country, it’s a good thing the Conservatives think him not ready. So far Trudeau doesn’t have the same “judgement” problems Harper seems to have. You know the one where he appoints “party faithful” and they turn out to have sex with teenagers; turn out to have to stay home at full salary from the parole board after allegations of harassment of other parole board members; sitting in a jail in Panama awaiting “export” to Canada for a $22 Million fraud; 31 fraud charges; in jail, out of jail, on trial, going to trial. Trudeau doesn’t seem to have the hearing and comprehension problems Harper is having. You know when Justin says, “I’m fairly certain that there are ways to re-engage with Iran,” and Steve thinks Justin said he wanted to be best friends with Iran? Some one ought to take Steve to a good doctor. These type of comprehension problems are frequently the first sign of dementia. Trudeau’s suggestion there “are ways to re-engage with Iran” puts him on side with the U.S.A. and five other major countries who are seeking to work out a nuclear deal and normalize relations with Iran. If Harper thinks his judgement is better than Obama’s, perhaps once again Harper is having “mental issues”. We know Harper likes to think of himself as a “real economist”, but Mrs. Merkel, Germany, is a “real” Phd. and she and Obama are “really” smarter than Harper. Steve, you and Jason are fast becoming the joke of the internation-
al set. Just retire quietly, with some grace, because chances are you won’t be re-elected and the rats are leaving the ship quickly. John Duncan, M.P., you might want to give retirement some thought also. The Conservative commercials may want to portray Harper as the lone leader handling the problems of the country all by himself, but to some of us, he looks like one of those dictators who has been deserted by his gang. Slow down and get to know your neighbourhood
Dear editor, I parked on the street in front of my house one Saturday recently and emerged with my groceries to be harangued by a couple of strangers who stopped their vehicle in the middle of the street. It seems they took exception to my parking on the street, and they very earnestly wanted to direct me to move. As the woman explained, she had once had to stop, come to a dead stop, precisely because someone was parked opposite to me, and another car was coming. I tried very hard not to let my jaw drop, as I was taught that this is rude, and pointed out the obvious: this is a broad residential street where people do park, and that slowing down might be in order. The significance of troubling to write about this trivial incident is this: that this couple, sadly, represents much of what is awful about our community. They view the residential streets as merely highways to one destination or another, which has the effect of making these neighbourhoods (and there are many of them) less than desirable places to live. The ideal neighbourhood would be one in which kids felt safe to play outside, moms and babes and seniors to go strolling, neighbours to stop and
chat with one another. And that this kind of neighbourhood does, in fact, require those in cars to slow down, to watch for kids darting out on the street, to be civil and respectful of the activities that go on in neighbourhoods, which may include parked, rather than moving cars. I make the suggestion that those of you who find driving quickly important might get out of your cars occasionally and chat with your neighbours. I think you’ll find that slow neighbourhoods are pleasant and enjoyable places to live...and isn’t that the object for all of us? Ms. VivianLea Doubt Courtenay
Decision not to bring Max to Courtenay was wrong
Dear editor, I found it disappointing that our only theatre in Courtenay would not being showing Max. Our community having the air force base, search & rescue, legion members, many veterans, and a large senior population seems like a prime area to show Max. The Comox Valley has many dog lovers. Our family went to Nanaimo’s Avalon Theatre to see Max. The movie is about a military service dog who suffers from Post Traumatic Stress and grief. The main actors are teenagers that any family would be delighted to call their own. This film is timely and excellent for all ages. The decision makers at Landmark Cinemas (Rialto Theatre) missed the boat in so underestimating the appeal to our community. Thank you to the service dogs and their handlers in all walks of community activities in our beautiful valley home. Lynn Sangste Courtenay

Island Health advising residents to be aware of conditions ■ Terry Farrell terry.farrell @comoxvalleyrecord.com
From an air quality standpoint, it’s not as bad as it looks in the Comox Valley. “In the Valley right now, I know people can see the haze and the smoke, but the air quality advisory … our air quality for the health index, is about a three,” said Charmaine Enns, Island Health’s North Island’s medical health officer. “It could go up to a four today. The scale is from one to 10, with 10 being the (worst).” Enns recommends that everyone with access to the Internet go to the air quality website at www.bcairquality.ca and check the chart. “It’s a very good source for peo-
ple to use,” she said. Island Health is advising people with health issues to be aware of the conditions. “What matters is that the people who are most at risk know that the air is not good - but they know that before the rest of us; they can feel their symptoms,” said Enns. “The air quality as it is in the Comox Valley right now, the general population probably will not be impacted in their day-to-day living and in what they are doing. If the air quality gets worse...people just need to be aware about avoiding strenuous activity outside, and limiting your exposure.” She added those who fall into the age extreme categories young children and seniors - will be the most impacted. “The very young, the seniors, and the people who have underlying heart and lung disease especially,” said Enns. “The
particulate matters in the air, those particles actually create an inflammatory response in our airways and our blood vessels. So that’s why people with heart and lung disease are so impacted. “So we particularly want those people to know that, if they can avoid outdoor exposure, then great.” Environment Canada’s Air Quality Health Index considers 1-3 on the scale to be of low health risk, but Enns did warn not to take the chart too lightly. “If you can smell it and you can see it, that means it’s real,” she said. “So regardless of what the monitor is saying … (most of us) are going to be fine, but for my dad, who has had several heart attacks, (going outdoors) might not be so good.” She also noted that residents can expect more of this as the summer progresses. Six members of the Comox Fire Department are lending their resources to help fight the growing forest fire on Dog Mountain, on the south end of Sproat Lake Provincial Park near Port Alberni. Comox Fire Chief Gord Schreiner told The Record from the fire scene as of Monday, the crew will also help with their structural protection trailer. The fire, which is believed to be human-caused, began on the weekend at a relatively small size - around 1.5 hectares - but has grown to 35 ha on a steep slope. RCMP evacuated cabins as the fire is within 60 meters. According to the BC Wildfire Service, air tankers dropped retardant and helicopters dropped water which has been effective in slowing the growth near the cabins. Twenty-one firefighters along

These are the highest numbers I have seen, especially in Nanaimo. “We are really looking at Mother Nature to help change things here and right now and best guess right now is… maybe Wednesday, we might see a bit of a low cold front push through. BUSINESS Buildings display KFN logo Britco, a modular construction company, is including logos of its aboriginal partners on various buildings located on partners’ traditional territories. The K’ómoks First Nation will be the first to have their logo featured next to Britco’s on buildings leased on their traditional territory. “The K’ómoks First Nation is a progressive, community-minded group and an important part of the Courtenay and
Comox areas,” said Britco president Obie Erickson. “We’re thrilled to celebrate our partnership by proudly displaying the K’ómoks logo on
our local buildings.” The Langley-based company hopes that showcasing their Aboriginal partners’ logos alongside the Britco logo will
encourage other B.C. businesses to forge aboriginal partnerships of their own. “An important aspect of our business partnerships, like the one we have with Britco, is putting the face of our Nation back on our traditional territory. Britco has come up with the perfect solution for that,” KFN Chief Rob Everson said. “I am excited to see what the future holds for partnerships like these.”

The Comox Valley Youth Music Centre presents West Side Story, the epic musical about two young lovers with connections to rival gangs. Tony (Nathaniel Johnson, pictured here), a former member of the Jets, falls in love with Maria (Avry Payne), the sister of the Sharks gang leader. The play was inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Youth heading to the West Side Special to the Record
Comox Valley Youth Music Centre students are tackling one of the most challenging musicals of all time. Director Lori Mazey has no doubt that the young singers/dancers/actors will rise to the occasion as they take West Side Story from page to stage. “CYMC is such a gigantic commitment … because it’s so intense, three weeks of unbelievable intensity,” she says in an interview. Rehearsing and performing this particular musical is likely to be more intense than usual, indicates Mazey, who directed West Side Story 14 years

CYMC: West Side Story has stood the test of time Con’t from Page 19 “There are people in the show who have spent their whole lives training as singers or actors. You’d be hard-pressed to see a community theatre production with older people in it that would necessarily be better.” Why is this tale of feuding New York City gangs the Sharks and the Jets in the 1950s an enduring classic? “This is one more incarnation of Romeo and Juliet and the idea of star-crossed lovers and the idea of something good coming out of something bad,” Mazey ventures. “In both Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story, there’s a glimpse of hope at the end, albeit tiny in West Side Story, it’s still there.” Mazey understands what CYMC students experience because she used to be one. “I did one show when I was 11 and I did another show when I was 16.” After returning from university, she volunteered one summer with props and assistant stage management, subsequently teaching, then directing for the first time in 2011. As a director each summer since then, Mazey starts planning the next year’s musical theatre production almost as soon as the current one is finished. “When we get into the production itself, it’s pretty much 12- to

The ‘mudder’ of all summer races coming to Mount Washington There was a dearth of snow on Mount Washington this winter, but there will be no lack of mud this summer. Earth and water will combine to bring thrills and spills to the alpine resort on July 18 when Mud Mulisha brings their fun and challenging obstacle course race to the Comox Valley. It is the second of three Mud Mulisha events this year. The series started May 23 at Bear Mountain Resort in Victoria and concludes Aug. 22 in Shawnigan Lake. “Prepare to be spoiled with one of the most spectacular alpine settings in North America!” organizers note on the Mud Mulisha website. “We’ll take you from base, to valley to top of the world on an amazing 15+ kilometre, 25+ obstacle tour of Mt. Washington!” “Mud Mulisha was incorporated in spring 2014 and we ran our inaugural Mud Run in Shawnigan (August 2014) with over 700 runners,” says Jay Wright, co-founder of Mud Mulisha along with Steve Hornick. “We were able to donate over $2,000 to the MS Society and are looking forward to much bigger numbers from our 2015 trifecta race series,” Wright said. “Steve and I are avid fitness/OCR (obstacle course race) enthusiasts and competitors. Our mission was to bring this growing sport to the Island to encourage families to get active and fit, and provide a super fun goal for them,” Wright explained. “We promote local bootcamps/rec centres and gyms to build programs for teams to compete in our races. It’s a win-win-win. Not only does it promote local business that way, but it pro-

motes healthy lifestyles for families (there is a kids’ race at every event) but it also allows us to support a charity that so many of our friends are affected with,” Wright said. “We have a category for elite runners to compete for cash prizes, but most of the heats are for teams of people to have fun and challenge themselves.” Wright said Mud Mulisha is looking forward to getting down and dirty here on July 18. “Mt. Washington will be a blast! We’re looking forward to a super muddy, fun day. The beer gardens will be open afterwards, plus we’ll put on a high energy after-party up there too.” For more on the event, including a link to register, visit mudmulisha.net/#!mt-washington/c9zz.

Responding to dry conditions, the Government of B.C. has announced a Level 4 drought rating for Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, and taken the additional action of suspending angling in streams and rivers throughout southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands due to ongoing low stream flows and warming water temperatures. At Level 4, conditions are extremely dry. Further declines in stream, lake and aquifer levels could lead to water shortages and affect people, industry such as agriculture, wildlife, and fish stocks. All water users are urged to maximize their water conservation efforts. Effective July 4, 2015, virtually all angling in streams and rivers in Wildlife Management Units 1-1 through 1-6 is suspended. The closure has been put in place to protect fish stocks at a time when they are vulnerable due to low flows and high water temperatures. The geographic area covers Bamfield south to Victoria on the west coast, and Campbell River south to Victoria on the east coast. Key rivers affected by the order include the Caycuse, Chemainus, Cowichan, Englishman, Gordon, Little Qualicum, Nanaimo, Nitinat, Oyster, Puntledge, San Juan, Sooke, Trent and Tsable.
off celebration will take place July 20 at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel and will bring together all 164 members of Team
The Qualicum (known as “Big Qualicum”) and Quinsam rivers are the only rivers or streams in the affected area exempt from the closure. On these two streams fishing can continue as normal. These streams have sufficient water refuges to adequately protect fish, even with normal angling pressure. Lake fishing is not affected by the order. –Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations

1945- 2015 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Russell Dickinson at home in Courtenay on June 30, 2015. Born in New Westminster in 1945, David came to Comox in 1950 where he grew up exploring the shoreline and the wide open spaces of Comox as it was then. After completing a Bachelor of Science at Victoria University, he qualiďŹ ed as a teacher in 1968, and began his teaching career in Sparwood, BC before travelling to New Zealand where he met and married Christine. After returning to Canada, David and Christine moved to Northern British Columbia where they lived and taught for 34 years. David thrived on the northern lifestyle and spent years exploring the mountains, lakes and rivers with his children, students and friends. He retired in 2003, and in 2007 David and Christine returned to the Comox Valley where David was actively involved in the community and particularly with Comox Valley Elder College. He also enjoyed travelling, tending his large garden, and time spent in boats. Building memories for his grandsons was important to him and he delighted in challenging them, providing them with new experiences and chances to explore the natural world. He is survived by his wife, Christine, his children, Joanne (Derek Spriet), Rebecca (Scott Morse), and James; grandchildren, Luke and Samuel Spriet, and Seth and Nathaniel Morse, his brother and best friend John (Robyn), and his sister, Joan. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Earl and Dorothy Dickinson, and his sister Lynne Hansen. His energy, kindness, generosity, creativity and sense of adventure will be missed by his extended family and his many friends. As a husband, a father, a brother and a granddad, his free spirit, and his love and support will be forever treasured. A Celebration of Life will be held on at Piercy’s-Mount Washington Funeral Home on Thursday, July 17, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. The family wishes to thank Dr. Green and the nurses of Comox Valley Home Nursing Care for their excellent care ands their compassion for David and his family in his ďŹ nal days.

GEORGE SAYS
“The love light shines even more brightly today than it did then. It has been a most wonderful sixty years filled with a love that knows no bounds. Geraldine has been by my side through so many trials and tribulations, she has supported me no matter what. She dutifully followed me through the many postings and cross country moves with never a complaint or hint of resistance. She is my shining light, the reason for my very existence, and my life blood, without her by my side I would have no reason to carry on. I love her with all my heart and soul.
In loving memory
