Happy birthday: Eleven month-old Jakk and his dad Kaley Solberg from Red Deer enjoyed the Canada Day celebrations at Pas Ka Poo Park this year. Solberg and his wife Rieki attended the celebration with Jakk and his three-year-old brother Eryk. They enjoy coming to Rimbey for the celebration which they say is kid friendly and offers many activities for the younger set. Treena Mielke Photo

Sergeant Groves says goodbye to community of Rimbey, moving on to Rocky Mountain House RCMP detachment
This week, Rimbey RCMP Detachment members responded to over 75 calls for service. Highlights include theft, break and enters, stolen vehicles, fraud, domestic disputes, drugs and other serious matters. Police target chronic offenders Police made numerous arrests in regards to many recent crimes, as well as several cold cases we have been diligently investigating. In most cases, the accused men and women who were charged criminally were very well known to police and were on some sort of court imposed conditions while on parole or probation. Your local detachment members have been working hand in hand with the Crown Prosecutor's office to ensure the offenders receive the
appropriate sentences for their crimes and don’t get off “scot free”. Police will continue to target chronic habitual offenders to ensure they are staying out of trouble. Last police report Unfortunately, this will be my last police report. I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing with you some of the “good, the bad and the ugly” that we see each week here at the detachment. Of course, you must all know I cannot write half of the stories I would really like to tell so you will just have to wait until I retire and we share a story around a campfire someday. We have seen some amazing breakthroughs where folks walking the wrong path have seen the light and took drastic measures to change their lives around for the better.
Sgt. Groves says thanks I am thankful for having worked with such great people at the detachment and our partner agencies. As the writer for the weekly police report, I was very sorry to see Cst. Luke Halvorson transfer to Major Crimes. When Luke left, I lost my best resource for funny things to write about! I grew up in rural Alberta. I was helping brand calves and mend fences from the time I was knee high to a grasshopper (my Grandpa’s description). However, Luke was a city boy. His first call to livestock on the road was priceless. He could be heard on the radio in a nervous voice saying, “I’m surrounded on the roadway by baby cows and they’re coming right for me”. and move on to my new post at Rocky Mountain House Detachment, I can truly say that I will treasure my time in Rimbey. Folks here are honest, caring and most of all — real. In times of sorrow, when we lost a fellow member and our flag hung at halfmast, someone always came by to say they were sorry. When we walked through the grand stands at the Rodeo Grounds either at Gimlet or Rimbey — someone was always there to shake our hand and say hello. When we were patrolling the roads less traveled and stopped to say hi to a farmer mending a gate, they often said, “come in for a coffee”. This is a wonderful community. Sure we have crime. No place doesn’t. What we do have are caring people who look out for their
neighbours, such as the volunteers with Gull Lake North Citizens on Patrol and Rimbey and District Rural Crime Watch. So, in closing I would like to thank you all for your kindness and support to my family and myself.
Const. Dutz to write police report Const. Carman Dutz will continue to write the Police Report to keep you all apprised until the new detachment commander arrives. God Bless.

Be careful what you wish for! This little whisper of wisdom came to me this weekend while I was crouched in a most unflattering position, weeding my flower garden. I was hot, too hot. The heat first hit me when I stepped out on my front step to grab the newspaper. Ouch! The wooden boards burned the soles of my feet and I found myself doing this quick little dance people sometimes do when they have to hurry to the bathroom. It is true. It was hot. In fact, this weekend, Mother Nature held a massive heat wand in her hand, waving it relentlessly over us all. The shimmering heat sent some poor souls, drenched in sweat, scurrying to some place, any place that was cool. But, not me. No, siree! Not me. I decided I was going to
weed my flower garden. Armed with long lost sunglasses that were hiding in the lost and found corner of my junk drawer, a golf hat that once was pink and really expensive face cream with that stuff in it that is supposed to keep the sun and wrinkles away, I began to weed. And as I dug into the black earth rather viciously with my little three-pronged gardening tool and dripped sweat all over my sweet little gold marigolds, deep purple wave petunias and delicate white alyssum, I thought unhappy thoughts. “This is terrible. I’m so hot. I’m not happy.” And then I thought again. Same thought! Of course that’s when
the little voice inside my head, which always has an annoying way of interrupting bad thoughts,” chirped in. Be careful what you ask for,” it said, all chirpy and happy! “Shut up little voice,” I said. That’s when I remembered winter. “Brrrr! It’s so cold. I’m freezing. I wish it would warm up.” Who said those words? Okay, it was me. And now it’s warmed up. So shut up already, I said to self. And so I did. I sat on the beach later, happily breathing in summer. One of my girls sat beside me and we watched
her kids walk out in the water, way out, until they became little specks. We looked at each other and decided the specks were too far away so we jumped in the lake. The water in Sylvan Lake is weird. It is cold and then it is warm and then it is cold again. Mostly, it is cold. We waded out to the specks until they became a boy and a girl. I smiled at their mom. There they are. Safe. “Don’t go out so far,” she yelled, relieved enough to be angry. We turned to wade back to shore, but for just one moment, time did a u-turn. Her words, caught in the waves, drifted back to me. I looked at this grown up lady beside me, but I didn’t
see her. Instead I saw this tiny girl with blonde pigtails and eyes that matched the colour of the sky, her aqua blue bathing suit and the lake. “Don’t go out so far,” I yelled. “Stay safe! Please, stay safe.” The present returns and I notice that someone has smashed the yellow ball of sun really hard and now it is nothing but a splash of fire spilling out of the sky and into the water, turning it into liquid gold. It is still very hot. I strive to think more deep thoughts, wondering if I could be very wise, after all. But, for now, deep thoughts elude me. Mostly, I’m just happy!
Motorcycle trip reflections and adventures
Jonah Kondro
Production: Red Deer, Alberta Published every Tuesday by PNG Prairie Newspaper Group in community with: Publisher: Mary Kemmis
By the time I was in Missoula, on my little motorcycle trip, my travel turkey was stuffed. Stories of a capricious Epipen injection and the homeless were enough to fill the ears
of whomever was willing to listen. And that is one the motives of travelling — after a good trip there is something real to talk about. My right arm was sore, but that was normal because I got tattooed (in Missoula) less than forty-eight hours after being in the Pincher Creek hospital. After two nights in Zoo Town, a new tattoo, and too many drinks at a gentlemen’s club (it may have been my birthday one of those nights), it was time to point the front tire of the motorcycle North and cut the distance down between Rimbey and I. When I left the Brooks St. Motor Inn, I figured I had a couple of 500 or 600 kilo-
meter days of riding before I was home. I would have one last stop somewhere, but before I thought too far ahead, I needed to eat breakfast. I guess technically in the morning at the motel I had ate half a muffin, drank a coffee, and smoked a Marlboro (don’t tell Joe). My new tattoo and I were in need of some bacon and eggs. I was making a successful effort to try weird and new places to eat for every meal. It is too easy to get locked down on the Denny’s country fried steak and eggs rotation. I found a little deli/dinner in a small town (smaller than Rimbey even) during my first fuel stop along highway 200 northbound in Montana.
This place was a straight up meat market and I wasn’t in the mood for handful of gypsy salami. From overtop of the glass, that showcased the meat and served as a counter, I ordered bacon and eggs from a young girl. There was a small dining room to the side of the deli area where I sat down. I scanned the walls and noticed an abundance of Jesus portraits and Jesus related paraphernalia — none of which I’m against. It was the single hand drawn picture of Chuck Norris that was hung higher than any of portraits of Jesus that seem odd to me or maybe it wasn’t odd at all. The remainder of my motorcycle trip was spent
travelling while deep thoughts about anything and everything passed through my conscious. I had spent a quiet evening in a motel outside Radium, B.C. Riding from Missoula to Radium in a single day was quite exhausting. I had spent four nights in Calgary completing some lame training and spent four nights on the road traveling with my motorcycle. The last day of my trip brought me home to Rimbey. The bank accounts are my only restraint and need to be recharged before I can leave like Alfred Tennyson’s poetic Ulysses “To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”

Rimbey Community Wellness Committee applies for funding for school counselor BY TREENA MIELKE
The Rimbey Community Wellness Group has taken a proactive approach to providing counseling services for young people in Rimbey. The group has submitted a grant application for approximately $16,000 to the United Way to apply for funding. The grant, if approved, will mean Rimbey Junior/Senior High School social worker, Margo Froehlick can work full time. Until earlier this year, Froehlick worked two days at West Country Outreach and three days at Rimbey Junior/ Senior High. However, she finished out this last school year full time at Rimbey Junior Senior High. The two extra days were paid for out of funds from the school site. However, this year all decisions regarding funding are made at central office. This year the school board has decided to fund the salary for the social worker to four days a week, which is an increase from the three days at the high school that was funded last year. The decision prompted the wellness committee to take action. “The group sees the value of the school social worker and applying for the funding seemed like a natural fit,” said Leanne Evans from Neighborhood Place. “Kids aren’t an expense, they’re an investment,” said Coun. Brian Godlongton, who sits on the wellness committee. continued on page 6
*** WELCOME *** The Town of Rimbey welcomes the Big Hearts Charity Riders who will be coming into Rimbey on Saturday, July 18, 2015 between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. Each year the Big Hearts Charity Ride roars into Rimbey to patronize our business, and collect donations for the Pediatrics and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Red Deer Regional Hospital of which the residents of Rimbey may have occasion to use. Harleys and Bikers coming to town stir the imagination of the young and young at heart and worry those who aren’t sure of the purpose of their presence. These determined Harley riders offer assistance to a worthy cause. Roughly 200 bikers will be welcomed into Rimbey for this event. We encourage everyone to come downtown to Game on Outdoors to meet these charity riders, join in the fun and the festivities. We look forward to seeing you all there!!! Town of Rimbey Administration

A 49 year-old criminal wanted on a Canada-wide warrant is now behind bars thanks to the combined efforts of two RCMP detachments, RCMP air services and Alberta Fish and Wildlife officers. Lloyd Hall was apprehended by Sgt. Mark Groves and Cst. Dallas Langley from the Rimbey RCMP detachment as he was walking beside the North Saskatchewan River about 20 kilometers west of Hwy 22 last weekend. “We had a tip that someone had seen Hall by the North Saskatchewan between Rocky Mountain House and Drayton Valley last Thursday,” said Groves. RCMP air services was contacted and conducted a flight over the area and RCMP officers went out on jetboat patrol north of Rocky Mountain House on the river. Groves and Langley combed the area
with a four by four vehicle, eventually heading out on foot to search for Hall, who had been in hiding for months. They located a campsite where a tarp had been used as a tent and a small campfire fire was burning. There were also some weapons at the campsite. “We knew he was close and we searched the area before we found him walking along the river. We used the element of surprise and he gave up right away and we walked him out.” Hall is now in the Red Deer Remand Centre. A trial date has yet to be set. Groves described Hall as a “career criminal” who faces multiple charges including fraud and theft over $5,000 for stealing several 4x4 trucks. He said he served time in jail in the ‘80s for aggravated assault and was on parole at the time of his arrest.
Grant application sent to United Way for more $$$ for counselor continued from page 5 “You get them at this age and you can help them,” added Helen Coers. “It’s a wonderful investment.” “Kids out here are isolated compared to a larger centre,” said the wellness committee chairperson, Eileen Banks. Trudy Bratland, chairman of Wolf Creek Board of Education said Rimbey Community Wellness Group deserved kudos for its initiative. However, she said profiles based on need were reviewed in May for all the schools in Wolf Creek Division. At that time it was determined that funding for salary for a Family

School Liaison Worker/social worker at Rimbey High School for four days a week would be sufficient.
“Kids out here are isolated compared to a larger centre.” Eileen Banks Froehlick said she is grateful and thankful for the support that Leanne Evans from Neighborhood Place and the wellness committee is willing to offer. She said the extra day will allow her to take on a more proactive and educational approach, as well as her regular one on one counseling duties. She noted the complex issues that teens are facing regarding mental health
and wellness have been on the rise over the years. Issues such as addictions, self-esteem, self-harm and suicidal ideation, are dealt with on a daily basis, she said. “The goal is to work with students, staff and parents to build resiliency in youth so that they are equipped to deal with the challenges that they will face throughout their lives. It is crucial as a society that we teach and model to our children how to cope with the difficulties that come along life’s way with healthy coping skills. It is not about keeping them from adversity because adversity will most definitely come. It is about how to handle the stress and challenges that we face. That is how you build resiliency.

Canada Day celebration provides plenty of family fun BY TREENA MIELKE
The Canada Day celebration held July 1 at Pas Ka Poo Park did Rimbey proud. In his speech Mayor Rick Pankiw, who was MC of the opening ceremonies, said the organizing committee spearheaded by Cindy Bowie, community services director deserved kudos for a job well done. He mentioned Cheryl Jones, Pas Ka Poo Park administrator, Gayle Rondeel, Dawna Providenti and councillors Matthew Jaycox, Jack Webb and Brian Godlongton for their help in making the event the success it was. Out-of-towners who came to Rimbey to enjoy the festivities were impressed with the event, enjoying many of the activities, eating birthday cake, and simply having a good time. “It’s more kid friendly than Red Deer activities,” said Rieki Solberg. “There is no shortage of activities for the kids,” added Jessi O’Reilley, who was at the park with her husband, Jesse and their three pre-school children, Saeber, Ranger and Drae. Halina Pearce, who lives in the United Kingdom and was visiting her brother Michael Jarmoluk for a few days, also took part in the celebrations. A gracious lady with a lovely smile, Pearce held onto her brother’s arm as she mixed and mingled with the crowd. Jarmoluk, dressed in his Legion uniform, took great pride in introducing her to his many friends. “I think this is lovely,” she said. “Everyone is very friendly. People are so nice here.” Linda Kelly and her sister Donna McPhillamey came to celebrate Canada Day in Rimbey, a move certainly in keeping with their family roots. The sisters are the great granddaughters of Ben Rimbey, who came with his brothers at the turn of the century to
settle the area. The ladies agreed coming to Rimbey for Canada Day celebrations is a great experience. “I love the park. Rimbey is a nice town, very clean,” said McPhillamey. “There is great community spirit,” added her sister. The opening ceremonies began with the singing of ‘O Canada by local singer, Jesse O’Reilly. During the opening ceremonies Shane Kreil, president of
the Rimbey Branch 36 of the Royal Canadian Legion gave a short presentation, urging the crowd to take a few moments to remember the Canadian flag they had grown up with. The current flag is now 50 years old. Ponoka County Reeve Paul McLauchlin and county councilor Nancy Hartford also spoke encouraging everyone to enjoy the day. The mayor also read a short message from MLA Jason Nixon.

Gull Lake Golf Course Pro-Am tournament coming up soon BY TREENA MIELKE
This year’s annual Junior Golf Foundation of Gull Lake Pro-Am tournament to be held at the Gull Lake Golf Course July 17 and 18 marks the 10th anniversary of the popular event. “This year we want it to have a kind of carnival like
atmosphere,” said Eamon McCann, who owns the golf course with his wife Carla. “We are gearing it up for the children even more than ever before.” The silent auction opens on July 14 and a live auction begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 17. On Friday, July 17 the adult/child nine hole scramble will take place, and to add fun and excitement to the game, there will be a professional golfer on every hole. On Saturday, July 18, the 18-hole Texas scramble will be held with a different professional golfer for each nine holes. The day also includes breakfast with the pros and a windup dinner as well as a pro skins game.
As in the past, the tourney will feature an impressive line-up of professional golfers. Sandra Palmer, Sam Randolf, Adrienne White, Laura Witvoet, Stuart Hendley, Brandon Regnier, Dirk Ayers, Paul Devenport, Shelby Chrest, Kris Tschetter, Perry Parker and Dave McMillan are all scheduled to take part. In an earlier interview, Laura Witvoet, head pro at Wolf Creek Golf Resort (Ponoka) said she enjoyed coming to the tourney and giving the youngsters some tips about golfing. “It’s rewarding to see how much they appreciate the opportunity to see professional and teaching pros.” continued on page 11

continued from page 10 She also enjoys hooking up with other pros that she has met over the years. “That is really fun.” Brandon Regnier, who is the head pro at Whitecourt and is a former junior program participant at the Gull Lake Golf Course has attended the Pro-Am tourney several times. “It’s always amazing,” he said, in an earlier interview. The Gull Lake Foundation was formed to provide educational endowments to past participants of the Gull Lake Junior League. The Junior Golf Foundation of Gull Lake is planning to raise around $15,000 this year from fundraising events. Money raised goes to the Gull lake Junior Golf Foundation Endowment Fund. Through overwhelming sponsorship from communities throughout Alberta and past program events, scholarships have been provided to many junior members. The focus of junior league has always been to learn the etiquette of golf and good sportsmanship and to encourage the juniors to enjoy the game of golf for the rest of their life. The foundation was spearheaded by Harold Lissel.

Pas Ka Poo Park to celebrate 50 years with huge party BY TREENA MIELKE
Take a step into the past and visit Rimbey’s own Pas Ka Poo Park, which includes a historic village and The Smithson Truck Museum. The village, open from mid May to early September is truly a fascinating journey back in time. This year the park will celebrate its 50th anniversary. “Without the help, love and labour of all our volunteers the park with its amazing historical value would not be as vibrant and include such extensive memorabilia and well preserved and lovingly restored historic buildings,” said park administrator Cheryl Jones. Aug. 22 is the park’s huge anniversary party which will be held after Saturday’s market. “There will be all kinds of activities including sawmill demonstrations,” said Jones. The park includes a main museum as well as the Arch Rib Museum built on site in 1970 which displays household and small business artifacts, and the village itself, which is delightful, charming and offer an authentic, hands on lesson in history. The village has many interesting buildings, among which is the Bluffton Legion Hall, built in 1952. The hall
houses several war veterans’ artifacts, a barbershop and meat market built in 1915, and a train station from the early 1900s along with a wooden caboose built in 1947. Also on the premises is the first school in Rimbey, the Kansas Ridge School, built in 1902. The Rimbey town office, built as a residence in 1915, prior to becoming the town office and Rimbey’s first church, the Church of Epiphany, built in 1908 using vertical logs, are part of the historic village. A hand-hued log homesteaders’ cottage built in 1932 is also part of the scenario. Near the park’s playground are replicas of a blacksmith shop and a trapper’s cabin. Just outside the trapper’s cabin stands “The Traveler,” a chainsaw creation by local artist Darren Jones and donated by his family in 2002. The medical museum, displaying memorabilia from the Rimbey hospital, is now open. Park officials are interested in obtaining stories or artifacts from St. Paul’s Hospital, which closed in 1930 or the Three Way Hospital, which became the Chronic Convalescent Three Way Hospital. In 1990 the Rimbey
Historical Society added a museum to house Ken Smithson’s collection of 19 restored International pickup trucks and The Smithson International Truck Museum was created. The museum houses the most complete collection of International half-ton trucks in the world. In 2002, for the town’s 100th anniversary, a 1957 anniversary edition truck was refurbished and donated. Presently, volunteers are restoring a 1928 International truck from the ground up, complete with a hand carved wooden steering wheel. An extensive license plate collection and many vintage photographs are also in the truck museum which is open daily. Call ahead to book a tour guide at 403-843-2004 or simply stop by the park. Jones said several events are planned at the park for the next few months to provide fun and entertainment to locals and visitors alike. She reminds the residents of Rimbey of the many attractions and interests the park holds, and invites them to spend some time there this summer. As well as the anniversary celebration, activities for August include a library booknic Aug. 21. Farmers’ markets will be

held every Saturday at the park, unless the weather is unfavorable, until October 10. Weddings, mystery tours and senior tours are all part of the exciting scenario at Pas Ka Poo Park throughout
the summer. The grounds of the park are beautified by hanging baskets supplied by Holly’s Greenhouse and volunteers from the Horticultural Society who plant lovely flowers. Artifact donations and
volunteer help is always welcome at Pas-Ka-Poo Park. “Anyone who wants to help out with one event or more or has a talent or skill they would be willing to share is more than welcome,” said Jones.

Rodeo action coming to Rimbey soon BY TREENA MIELKE
Rodeo action is soon to be happening in Rimbey. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the rodeo and, once again, it is guaranteed to provide lots of thrills and spills and excitement for spectators.
This year’s Central Alberta Rodeo Association (CARA) rodeo is July 11 and 12. The local rodeo will be held July 10. The rodeo will kick off with a pancake breakfast sponsored by Rimbey Coop and Servus Credit Union in the Co-op parking lot from
7:30 to 10 a.m. Friday. The local rodeo will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, and the CARA sanctioned rodeo is to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday and again at 1 p.m. Sunday. Mutton Bustin’ for children six years old and under will be held during all three days of the rodeo.
Gary Gross, the announcer for the World Professional Chuckwagon Association is to be the rodeo announcer. A clown will be on hand to keep the crowd entertained and laughing while he attends to the more serious job of ensuring competitors are safe.
Each day, rodeo action will be preceded by the grand entry led by the rodeo queen. Original members of the rodeo board will be invited to take part in the grand entry as the rodeo is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Mini donuts and a concession will be set up at the
rodeo grounds. A cabaret featuring the Infinity Outlaws will be held in the new AGRIM Complex at 9 p.m. Saturday. The crowning of the rodeo queen will be held Sunday. Beer gardens will be on the grounds all weekend.
The Rimbey parade is an exciting part of the action in town. This year’s parade is to be held Saturday, July 11. File photo

Rimbey seniors win bronze medals in creative writing competition at Alberta 55 plus Games BY TREENA MIELKE
Brenda Restall admits she hasn’t taken pen to paper to try her hand at creative writing since high school. But, this year the Rimbey senior is pleased as punch to learn she received a bronze medal with her poem entitled The Dance of Fire which was entered in the creative writing section from the senior’s games. The fact that the poem was inspired by a fire, which destroyed her home three years ago in September, is a testimony of courage and strength in the face of adversity, as well as a medal winning creation.
Restall is pleased to win, but no less pleased to learn that Alvin Goetz, also from Rimbey, won a bronze with his non-fiction humorous story entitled Leroy Brownlee – Unsuspecting Millionaire. Restall is pleased to note that other Rimbey seniors will be competing in the Games. “I am so impressed with the folks in Rimbey. I’m very proud of them,’ she said. Qualifying at Zones for the Games are Harry and Marg Tucker and Reg Wright and Barry McMillan for bocce ball. Bill Howe, Gladys Wilson and Russ and Alice Picketts qualified for
military whist. Flo Howe qualified for singles crib. Brenda and Gordon Moentenay, Dave and Vivian Mulligan will compete in floor curling and Al Elliott will represent Zone 4 in the over 80 athletics category. Deb Retzlaff has qualified for golf. Gladys Wilson, Dianna Wright, Lorraine Jarl, Harry Tucker, Barb Patey and Brenda Restall will compete in arts and crafts. The Alberta 55 Plus Games is the province’s premier multi-sport and cultural event. It promotes physical, intellectual and social wellness regardless of age or ability. The event is the ideal mix of sport, compe-
tition and fun. Participants must qualify in Zones to compete in the Games. Host cities provide participants with full accommodation, food and entertainment. Sport and cultural competitions are accompanied by a torch relay, kick off/closing ceremonies and host city events. 2015 will mark the Games 35th anniversary. The Strathmore 2015 Alberta 55 Sumer Games will be held July 16 to 19 in Strathmore, Alberta. A banquet and medal presentation honoring the competitors from Zone 4 who won in creative writing and arts and crafts will be held in Rimbey at the Drop In Centre on July 26.
The Dance of the Fire BY BRENDA RESTALL
Always fear the fire, it will hunt you and eat you and leave not a trace, Of what was once loved, turned to ashes in its place. The orange and the red, with the smoke in the night, The street was aglow with the strange fire light. The lust driven fire was consumed by desire, A home full of memories its fuel it required. The fire that night swirled its breath of seduction, Its weird kind of show, its dance of destruction. A couple stood watching from out in the street, They staggered and fell to the ground in defeat. The firemen killed the flames and the smoke, The dance was quite finished, it flickered and choked. The fire lay dead in its cold bed of embers. That is a night they will always remember. Their love and their strength was really the show, Not the fire from hell that had danced mere hours ago. Editor’s note: This poem by Brenda Restall, which won a bronze medal at the seniors’ games, is dedicated to the Rimbey Fire Department by the writer.

Presentations and music end Bentley’s school year BY JUNE NORVILA
RECYCLE
YOUR PAPER!
On June 26 Bentley school students and staff were in for a treat. Joseph Hackett, referred to as Mr. Joe, a Bentley grade 6, 7, 8, and 9 Educational Assistant (EA) had a number of his musically talented friends connected through Burman University in Lacombe (formerly Canadian University College) join with him in the elementary gymnasium in the morning to present a powerful musical performance. A video put together by teacher Courtney MacMillan’s Grade 8 and 7/8 language arts class featured a number of students explaining, in front of a video camera, what the school logo PRIDE meant. PRIDE stands for Partnership, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence. It was followed by more from the jamming band of friends. At one point a special young Bentley student, Jaxon Zimmer, joined in singing with Mr. Joe and the band. There was a surprise performance by a group of four talented young performers on stringed instruments, three from Lacombe and one from Red Deer, that are a part of the much larger Rosedale Valley Strings orchestra. The orchestra rehearses on the Burman University campus and is directed by Naomi Delafield, concertmaster of the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra. They performed the theme from Anne of Green Gables. A special presentation of $560 was made to the Red Deer SPCA representatives Lisa and Eva. The money had been raised at the Jr. High Drama Class’s
June 11 performance of the musical Annie Jr. How fitting that Kelsey Vig who played “Annie” and Fine Arts Academy/ Director/Teacher teacher Marla Kolybaba made the presentation.
Lisa Ruether explained to the students that out of 40 neglected dogs they received from Milk River they just have a few left waiting for homes and that they appreciated having the involvement of
young people caring about animals in distress. A donation of leashes, dog toys, pet dishes, etc had also been turned over to the SPCA. Mr. Joe was presented with a Bentley Panthers
15071OS0
school hoodie by school principal Lane Moore as Joe is not returning to the school in the fall. He is furthering his own education. In the gymnasium after the noon break the school’s year end PRIDE
awards were passed out with seven recipients from each classroom in grades 1-5 and eight for grades 6-11 receiving them. Recipient’s names can be viewed on the school’s website under Newsletters.

Although all three of the lovely Rimbey rodeo queen contestants are worthy of the title of rodeo queen, only one will be given the honor. The girls, busy on Canada Day serving cake at Pas Ka Poo Park, took some time out before a quick interview before resuming their duties. Melissa Sisson, 16, from Eckville loves rodeos and is enthused and excited about running for rodeo queen. “I love it. I have never experienced anything like this,” she said. “I’m so glad I am doing it.” The petite teen lives on an acreage near Eckville and is a barrel racer and bull rider who also plans to try her skill at bareback bronc riding. Twenty-one year-old Lindsay Newman lives in Sherwood Park and works at Servus Credit Union. She plans to attend the University of Alberta in the future. Newman, who has been a 4-H member for some time enjoys swimming. She rides both English and Western style and competes in equestrian jumping events. She also sings at her church in a small choir. She is enjoying running as rodeo queen in Rimbey. “I really like small towns. I like the rural atmosphere.” Newman said she was having fun at Canada Day at Pas Ka Poo Park. “It’s like the whole town is here.” Kayla Newman, 16, lives west of Ponoka and is a Grade 12 student at Ponoka Secondary Composite School. She is a barrel racer and figure skater and also coaches figure skating. She has enjoyed running for rodeo queen and meeting new people and becoming involved in happenings in Rimbey. “It has been a treat experience and I really like the girls who are also competing. They are fun to work with.” Last year’s rodeo queen is Martina Holdcamp. The Rimbey rodeo will be held July 10, 11 and 12.

Rieki Rondeel sits quietly knitting in her pleasant, cozy sunroom on 50th Street that she has lived in since 1966. Except for the click of the knitting needles and a little white dog whose bark is, no doubt, much worse than his bite, the house is quiet now. But, if the walls could talk, what stories and yarns and tales they would reveal. Oh, if only they could. This old house has a history that goes back, way back to the days when Rimbey was not much more than a dream and a vision of the men for whom the town was named after. “This is Ben Rimbey’s house,” Rondeel says proudly. “This is a piece of Rimbey’s history that people need to know about.” As in most communities in Alberta, the story of Rimbey begins at the turn of the century. The town became an official community in 1902. The first name given to the settlement at the turn of the century was Kansas Ridge as many of the settlers came from Kansas. Among them were the three Rimbey brothers (Sam, Ben and Jim) for whom the town was officially named after in 1904. The Rimbeys, originally from Pennsylvania, moved to Canada from Scott County, Illinois, having moved to Illinois in the 1830s from Maryland. It is recorded that Ben Rimbey registered three quarter sections for his family in 1899. Rondeel is not certain when the house was built. She believes it was completed in 1903 or 1904 and notes that Ben Rimbey lived in another house first, which she assumes was used as living quarters until his two-storey framed structure was completed.
She notes that the original logs in the front entry are original as are the steep stairs leading to the upstairs bedrooms. With a huge family of 11 children to raise, the Rondeels were required to make many renovations to the Ben Rimbey house including putting in a bathroom and an extra bedroom. A basement was also built. Although the house was built with minimal (newspapers were found in the ceiling) insultation she said it is warm and cozy. The veranda was removed as the wood had rotted, making it unsafe. Today if one is driving down the Main Street of Rimbey, once called Jasper Avenue, it is easy to overlook the two-storey house that once belonged to Ben Rimbey. But the house has a historical value that should not be forgotten. It was standing, a proud and sturdy town landmark, in 1919, when the Lacombe and Blindman Valley Electric Railway (later part of the Canadian Pacific Railway, reached Rimbey. By this time the new town was starting to prosper. Soon, two elevators were built and the town boasted a population of 319. Sadly, the Second Word War did not leave Rimbey untouched, claiming many of the town’s young men. Some returned, some did not. By 1946, the population had reached 634. When the Rondeels moved into the Ben Rimbey house, the appearance of 50th Avenue itself was beginning to change. But, the house, which had played such a significant role in the town’s history remained, and is still standing today. “Except for the shape, it doesn’t really look like an old house anymore,” said Rondeel. “But it is, it really is, and I’m glad I still live here. I’m proud of this house.”
