Frustration is growing among Vernon firefighters as some residents ignore an open burning ban. On Monday night, firefighters responded to an outdoor burn in the 9800 block of Eastside Road and an unattended campfire in the 6200 block of Quail Road. “It’s very upsetting to see both of these,” said Jack Blair, deputy fire chief. “The media and the government have been good at getting the word out (about the wildfire risk). No campfires are allowed — none, nada.” While neither fire Monday caused any damage, Blair insists they were a threat. “Look at what’s happened in Joe Rich and Lillooet. It’s dry out there,” he said. “It’s disappointing because we’re trying to keep the city safe and everyone needs to pitch in.” Jack Blair While some residents are ignoring the campfire ban, Blair is pleased others are being vigilant when they see flames. “We need people to report these incidents.” Anyone contravening the campfire and open burning ban faces a fine. “And it’s not just from us. The Ministry of Forests will hit you hard for infractions of the bylaw,” said Blair. Besides Vernon, all North Okanagan municipalities and regional districts have banned campfires, as well as the Okanagan Indian Band and Splatsin First Nation. A provincial ban is in place for open fires of any size, industrial burning, fireworks, tiki torches, sky lanterns and burning barrels. It covers all B.C. Parks and Crown land. The Ministry of Environment has issued a smoky skies advisory for the North Okanagan, because of forest fire smoke. According to the B.C. Wildfire Service, if you see or smell smoke in the air, you’re encouraged to avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially people with chronic underlying medical conditions. Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have underlying respiratory conditions, like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or heart disease. Investigation continues amongst ruins JENNIFER SMITH Morning Star Staff

Concerns are being sparked a week after flames destroyed a Vernon building, as the charred remains continue to smoulder. “It’s been smoking every day,” said Norma Wasney, Kalamalka Security, who has been guarding what is left of the Ministry of Social Development building. “I’ve had people honk at me and point from their cars,” said Wasney. Although the odd plume of smoke continues to emit, firefighters have the situation under control. “It’s not going to go anywhere,” said Vernon Fire Rescue deputy fire chief Lawrie Skolrood. “It’s just burning off.” With security on site 24/7, Skolrood says residents shouldn’t be alarmed if they still see smoke. “It’s really nothing to worry about.” Security guards have also been extinguishing concerns about the income assistance and disability services that are no longer accessible at the building. “There was some pretty panicky people there for a while,” said Wasney. “I’ve told them they have to go downtown to Service BC.” The North Okanagan Foot and Ankle Clinic has also been displaced. There are plans to rebuild, but it’s not known if the same services will move back in. “We’re definitely going to be building,” said Darryl Payeur,

Vernon Fire Rescue and independent insurance investigators, spent most of the day on scene Monday digging through the charred remains. “There’s so much damage, it’s too hard to tell,” said Skolrood, who could not determine a cause but says the investigation will continue

in examining the roof top units. In the meantime, what is left of the blackened building has been an attraction for motorists. “People slow down and look so there’s lots of horns,” said Wasney, adding there have been a couple close calls. Police have been patrolling

The RCMP were busy Friday night. Officers responded to two separate incidents involving weapons. During the first incident, a man was alleged to be outside of the Vernon Boston Pizza with a gun at 11 p.m. “The information was the man left on foot northbound. Our first officer on scene found the 37-year old suspect had returned but was no longer in possession of the gun,” said Gord

Taxpayers are footing the bill so they get naming rights for a new sports facility. Greater Vernon Advisory Committee staff are recommending Thursday that directors name the track and fields next to the college Greater Vernon Athletics Park. “Because of the public contribution (borrowing funds), the decision was made to recognize that contribution through a

The incident between a bicycle and a pickup truck occurred in the 3400 block of 25th Avenue just after 6 a.m. July 2 and the woman cyclist was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. “She has died as a result of her injuries,” said Gord Molendyk, with the RCMP, adding that the death occurred July 3. Police say the woman came into the truck’s lane of traffic and a collision could not be avoided. She was not wearing a helmet. “The investigation has been turned over to the coroner,” said Molendyk. Lake Country seeks Pelmewash rights KEVIN PARNELL

“There are many technical issues regarding road, drainage...”

Morning Star Staff

After being put on the backburner since the end of 2013, the District of Lake Country is hoping to move forward with talks with the Ministry of Transportation on handing over control of Pelmewash Parkway to the district. The old Highway 97 along Wood Lake, re-named Pelmewash Parkway by Lake Country when the new Highway 97 opened, is still owned by the provincial government despite the fact the new highway has been open since August of 2013. At the time it was expected the government would hand over control to the district within a year, but negotiations have dragged on between the two sides for a variety of reasons. “There are many technical

— Alberto De Feo

details regarding road, drainage, traffic, rock scaling and others that have required some study and analysis,” said Lake Country administrator Alberto De Feo in explaining the process. “There are also a number of permits with a number of residents in the area that we are reviewing as part of our due diligence, similar to what was done for the acquisition of the CN corridor.” The acquisition of the CN corridor was another issue that took some time away from the district

being able to move forward with the final acquisition of Pelmewash Parkway from the province. As well, during last November’s civic election campaign, Mayor James Baker talked about rock scaling work that needed to be done along the old highway prior to Lake Country taking over control of the stretch of highway. De Feo said the condition of the road and the pullovers is one issue Lake Country and the Ministry of Transportation are talking about with the cost to make improvements being negotiated between

the two sides. “Local government road standards are different from provincial road standards,” he said. “We need to overcome some of those differences. The cost to the district and the willingness of the province to participate to those costs is part of the discussion.” When the public was last involved in the Pelmewash discussions it was in November of 2013 when the district unveiled a concept plan for the parkway. The consultant who wrote the plan pegged the high-end cost of developing Pelmewash at $12 to $13 million and the district said grants would be available along the way to developing, much like the CN corridor. With the district acquiring its portion of the CN corridor earlier this year, the district now has two different trails to develop going

though its boundaries. “With the acquisition of the CN corridor on the other side of Wood Lake, this asset (Pelmewash) becomes even more important as it creates a very nice loop around the lake,” said De Feo, who added that more public consultation will likely need to be done once the road is handed over to district control. “Council will have to review the work done last term and maybe add some more public consultation to see if people are still interested in the concept that was laid out then. These planning exercises take time as there are many issues and many affected people who live in the area that need to be taken into consideration.” De Feo said he is unsure when the highway will finally be given over to District of Lake Country control.

Water restrictions have escalated for Greater Vernon residents. As of Tuesday, stage one water restrictions are now in effect for Greater Vernon. “This is a shift from normal conditions, meaning there will be increased monitoring of Jennifer Miles outdoor water use to encourage customers to reduce water use by 10 per cent,” said Jennifer Miles, water sustainability co-ordinator. “Greater Vernon Water asks customers to only water when needed.” Under regulations, residents can water: • Tuesday, Thursday, and/or Saturday if their property has an odd address number.

• Wednesday, Friday, and/or Sunday if their property has an even address number • Automatic timer irrigation may operate between the hours from midnight to 6 a.m. • Manual sprinklers (moved by hand) may be used between 6 and 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. and midnight. • Drip irrigation may operate between the hours of 7 p.m. and 10 a.m. (could previously run anytime under normal restrictions) • Customers using a watering can or hose with spring-loaded nozzle may hand water anytime “Our reservoirs filled early this year and then stopped spilling on June 10. This means we are using stored water earlier than normal,” said Miles. “Combine that with a hot, dry June causing everyone to irrigate more has pushed us into stage one restrictions.” More details can be found at www. rdno.ca/waterrestrictions. Farewell Falkland Fran

t was the early ‘90s, and photographer Brad Moore and I headed to Falkland for a Snowbirds fly-past far above the small town. As soon as we arrived, we hooked up with Fran Nikon, who had convinced the aerobatics team to visit, and we waited and watched the skies above. Time continued to pass and ultimately a decision was made to head inside the Falkland Hotel. One beverage led to a second one, but I ran out of cash. Fran offered to buy the next round and that created a running gag for the next 20-odd years. Every time I would speak to Fran either on the phone or in person, and no matter the subject Richard Rolke matter, she would always promptly remind me that I owed her a beer and interest was accruing. I would always laugh it off and tell her I would get it next time. Unfortunately, I waited too long and Fran’s recent death means my outstanding brew debt went unpaid. Fran also features vividly in another welltold family story. It was late August 1994 and Fran invited me to do a stint in the dunk tank during the annual Daisy Daze celebrations. Balls kept flying at the target as virtually every kid in town tried to soak me, and seeing how much fun they were having, my wife decided to get in on the action and pitch a few. However, there was the question of what to do with our two-week-old first-born as my wife was preoccupied with putting me into the drink. The solution came from Fran who enlisted babysitters — two elderly men sitting on the sidelines. With a little reluctance, my wife, who had only been a mom for just a few days, handed over our daughter to these two gents, who promptly began oohing and ahhing and

BEYOND THE HEADLINES

making sure the bundle of joy was well looked after. I first met Fran when she and other Falkland residents became frustrated with the endless bickering among the provinces and the apparent lack of patriotism. They launched the I Care campaign on April 1, 1991 to show they weren’t fooling about their love for Canada and flags began showing up on homes, stores and barns. Nikon’s enthusiasm was contagious. “I did keep talking and I got people being more positive about Canada. I see it as a patchwork quilt with Canada as the backing and the diversity of the country making up the patterns,” she said in a 1999 interview. But Nikon wasn’t satisfied with just waving the flag every April 1 and she developed a vision that would have a permanent effect on Falkland. Her concept was a giant metal Canadian flag on Gyp Mountain, which could be seen for miles around. She convinced Lafarge, which mined the site, to get on board and she began urging people to donate money for construction. She was relentless in her efforts, even sitting in the Village Green Centre one weekend asking Vernon shoppers to be proud Canadians. Shortly after the 28-by-56-foot flag was completed, Fran escorted me up the mountain to have a first-hand look. She beamed from ear to ear as she pointed out the names of donors on the back of the flag and specifically one that identified my wife and I. Fran was tickled that we were part of her dream. Every trip through Falkland has had me keep an eye open for Fran, and now that she is gone, I will think about her every time I see the Canadian flag, whether it’s the big one on Gyp Mountain or a small one fluttering on a passing car. Fran taught me some important lessons – love of country, loyalty to one’s community, volunteerism and having a strong sense of humour, especially when beer is involved.

Could it be that the relentlessly hot weather is making our brains soft? Is there another possible explanation why, despite the fact that temperatures have been in the 30s for what feels like forever and despite the lack of rain and resulting in desert-like conditions, people are still flicking their butts? Never mind that carelessly discarded cigarettes are litter and are, therefore, disgusting. Under the right conditions — exactly the conditions, coincidentally, that British Columbians find themselves in at the moment — they have almost unlimited potential for destruction. What we can only hope is a small minority of smokers are giving what is already a widely reviled habit, an even worse name. Whether they’re flicked out the window of a car, or dropped and given a half-hearted turn of a heel during a walk, cigarette butts are being discarded without, apparently, so much as a second thought to the property, lives or safety of everyone around them. It’s a problem, of course, for local fire crews, who have to gear up and battle searing hot flames in 30-plus degree weather. But it’s a much bigger issue than that. Even before summer officially arrived, the province had all but tapped out its wildfire fighting budget for the entire year. Dry lightning storms in the Interior continue to ignite parched vegetation, leaving crews scrambling. Mother Nature doesn’t need any help from humans in that department. But she’s getting it anyway. June’s unrelenting dry heat was certainly out of character for the typically cool and soggy month, but this is hardly the first stretch of hot weather British Columbians have ever seen. We know better. — Langley Times

Landing sewer letter raises questions

H

aving received the City of Vernon's letter May 27, I have several questions as well as observations. The original letter of Sept. 24, 2014 was to find out if there was any support for a sewer line to be brought into the Claremont subdivision at this time, and obviously interest was shown on a projection of this extension of sewer. We have always had an interest in this idea and as a 45-year owner of my Claremont property, I recall that bringing in sewer to the Landing was a major campaign promise of the voting to bring the Landing into the city, so we have always had an interest in seeing this promise fulfilled. Back then, nothing was ever said about the cost to the homeowners and we thought this would just be an advantage for us to become a city property owner. One thing about being in the city is that our property taxes went up considerably after the period of grace was finished. Now we are being faced with an additional fee on our taxes for the next 20 years of $1,000 per year for our hooking up to city water, after our original water system is no longer able to be maintained by the aging original developer. We really have no choice in hooking up to city water because water is so essential. However, we do have a choice in accepting city sewer as we have existing septic systems and although these have to be both replaced in part and mainSAFETY FIRST When it comes to accidents, it's common to think, 'Oh, it will never happen to us.' That is what we thought until our six-year-old son, Roan, a member of the War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, lost his leg in a lawn mower accident. A few years ago, Roan was riding on a lawn mower with an adult when he fell off and severed his left leg at the knee. As he was airlifted by helicopter to the hospital, we wondered if we were going to see him again. With lawn-cutting season here, we want to help spread Roan’s message across the country that kids should never be around a lawn mower. It doesn’t matter how good you are with machinery, it just takes a moment for a life-changing accident to happen. Today, Roan is an active and energetic child thanks to help from the War Amps with financial assistance for artificial limbs,

tained, it's far less than what I am reading in your recent letter. From what I read, the basic cost to each property will be an initial $16,316 and if paid over 15 years, it will increase our property taxes to an additional $1,510 per year. Doing my own home tax math where I already pay $1,549 per year and that number includes additional grants of senior and homeowner, that would bring my next year's total tax to $4,059 providing the basic city tax is not increased. This increase of about $2,500 in one year is definitely out of my financial reasonable assessment for a widowed senior living on old age pension. In addition to this huge fee for

regional seminars and peer support. We just hope that his story will prevent even one child from being injured. If you would like to learn more about how to encourage children to play safely, please visit waramps.ca. Jolene and Neil Heck LAUNDRY ARGUMENTS The recent letter from MLA Eric Foster about the hospital laundry services is disingenuous at best. On the one hand, he argues about the wonderful new investments in showy, shiny infrastructure and then argues that it is too expensive to maintain the local laundry services. This is very short sighted for two reasons. First, the local hospital loses employment opportunities, hus Vernon loses employment opportunities. All of this in an era when gov-

ernments clamour on and on about jobs, jobs, jobs. Secondly, by privatizing the services, he is proceeding with the second step of the overall privatization of health services, a long standing neo-conservative (labelled Liberal in B.C.) goal. The first step was the creation of the health authorities in the first place. The latter, through mismanagement internally, and through the false premise of austerity, will be less and less able to manage maintenance of their structures and services. Finally, when they are all outsourced, the government will end up selling the infrastructure to the market. This supposed free and fair market is designed for corporate profit, not for essential health services for the general population. The British National Health Service is a prime example of this, wherein the privatized hospitals are much more expensive and provide very poor service.

servicing our area, you are expecting us to pay operation costs through user fee, connection charges to the city and the work required on our own property to connect (estimated at $5,000 to $10,000 per home). If the lot is on the lower side of the road, this may include the necessity to buy a pump to pump sewage up to the main line. Also, a plumber fee will be needed for oversight. As I read in the petition part of this letter, anyone signing this document is giving consent to go ahead and therefore accepting all charges and stipulations. Unlike the first letter of last Sept. 24, there are no yes or no voting boxes, just a place to sign for the then inevitable go-ahead to this whole expensive project. This means that in addition to owing $20,000 for the next 20 years, we will also owe $16,316 on our properties — a grand total of $36,316 in one year against our property. Who is going to be interested in buying one of our homes with an additional price tag of that amount? They will go elsewhere. Because of this extreme borrowing by the city for this project and passing all costs on to us, and the city doing nothing to contribute to this expense, I am 100 per cent not in favour of moving ahead with this sewer install into our area, and I will certainly not be signing any paper for my approval. Donna Erdman

If you want a view of the real meaning of austerity, one should read the book of the same title, Austerity, by Kerry-Anne Mendoza, which describes the incompetence of the British system of austerity from Thatcher on down through Cameron. Mr. Foster is all for helping corporate profit-taking, and not much for helping the people of Vernon. His actions speak louder than his words. Gallery back for another Midsummer’s of fun Where else can you bid on prized local art called out by cattle auctioneers? Kristin Froneman Morning Star Staff

It’s Vernon’s own cattle call for artists and art lovers. The open audition, however, is not so ominous... It’s not even an audition, but the 29th annual Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts, a live auction and garden party benefitting the Vernon Public Art Gallery. The event, which takes place at Turtle Mountain Winery, with its spectacular views of the valley, July 15, once again features the live art auction conducted by award winning auctioneers, the Raffan brothers of Valley Auction Ltd. Known for auctioning cattle – yes, those beauties that go moo! – the Raffans’ rapid fire banter, humour, and those prized cowboy hats are all part of what makes Midsummer’s, well, Midsummer’s. Top that off with locally produced art on the block, along with gourmet hors d’oeuvres supplied by local caterers, regional libation, live music, dancing, and a photo booth, and it’s understood why Midsummer’s has long been recognized as the social event of the season, said VPAG executive director Dauna Kennedy Grant. “The generosity of our supporting artists and businesses this

For those looking to purchase a piece of art, they couldn’t pick a better year for quality and selection,” said Kennedy Grant. The event starts at 6:30 p.m., when guests arrive and can redeem their admission ticket for a free white or red sangria. Locally catered canapés will be passed while guests mingle and take in the array or artworks and auction

packages available this year. A cash bar, with a selection of wine, beer and sangria, will also be available. New this year is the photo booth, where a professional photographer will capture some fond memories for guests before the auction starts. In addition, live music by local band Feet First will entertain the crowd throughout the evening until 11 p.m.

The live art auction begins at 8 p.m. “We have some noteworthy artworks up for auction this year, including a Bryan Ryley painting that will be reproduced for the upcoming VPAG banner project,” said Kennedy Grant, adding the banner will be mounted on the east side of the downtown Vernon parkade in the near future. Vernon-international artist

Amanda Shatzko, who is this year’s B.C. Culture Days ambassador, will be creating a painting at the event, which will go on the auction block hopefully by the time the paint is dry. Also included are some largescale pieces by Shawn Serfas and Gary Dewhurst, valuable works by Peter Ewart and Joyce Devlin, a print by Laura Widmer, who will featured in a solo exhibition at the VPAG later this summer, and more artworks in various mediums by artists from around the Okanagan. “We have artwork for first-time buyers through to the serious collectors. I highly recommend you stop by the Big Steel Box gallery and the VPAG Community gallery to preview the work ahead of time and prepare your bids. There are some pieces you don’t want to miss out on,” said Kennedy Grant. All of the artworks and auction packages for the event are available to view online at www.vernonpublicartgallery.com under current exhibitions in the Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts preview. Or swing by the Big Steel Box Satellite Gallery and the Community Gallery at the VPAG to see the newest additions to the preview, including packages for accommodation, recreation, health spas and more. “We can’t say thank you enough to everyone who contributes to making this event happen,” said Kennedy Grant. Regular priced tickets for Midsummer’s are on sale for $60 each, available online or at the gallery, located at 3228 31st Ave.

Australian blues picker stops in Vernon as part of national tour

Morning Star Staff

The last time Ash Grunwald was in Vernon, he was a dreadlocked blues slinger performing at Silver Star’s Saloon and snowboarding local runs, back when snow was plentiful. A lot has changed since that winter of 2014, mainly the disappearance of the snow. The dreadlocks are also gone. And now the powerhouse guitarist-vocalist and avid surfer from Down Under is back on these shores to experience a full Canadian summer. This current tour, Grunwald’s 14th to B.C., brings the Aussie to play both intimate gigs as well as larger festivals across Canada. His stop in Vernon next Tuesday is in between his appearances at the Winnipeg and Vancouver Folk Festivals, and was organized by Vernon resident Lenny Whatmore. “I met Ash Grunwald last year whilst he was on tour and he confided that although he enjoys the big venues for the remuneration, his true love is playing the smaller town halls for their intimacy,” said Whatmore. “I just feel this is such a rare opportunity for local blues fans to see

such a fabulous artist up close and personal. He puts on a stellar performance.” Known for his swampy Delta blues style, Grunwald began touring B.C. early in his career. One of his first gigs here was at the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival, when he shared the same stage as the late, great Jeff Healey as well as with Sue Foley and Big Jack Johnson. “That was a big experience for me and an eye opener,” he told The Morning Star last year. “What I like about Canada, especially with the older people, is they know what the blues is. In some places, no one thinks of my music as bluesy, but I come to places like Canada and there’s a lot more tenacity required on my part to get it right, probably more than the audience realizes.” Particularly popular in the ski resort town of Whistler, where he performs often, Grunwald’s live performances are known for his blistering guitar as well as riding the beat in a percussive style. “When I play live, it has that four-onthe-floor, modern pulse that we get from electronic dance music,” he said. Grunwald made his U.S. tour debut

last year opening for fellow Aussie and friend Xavier Rudd, and like Rudd, he plays from a solo, one-man band act to having a full ensemble accompanying him. During his career, Grunwald has supported James Brown, Jack Johnson, Bo Diddley, The Black Keys, Keith Urban, Missy Higgins and has performed with blues legend Howlin’ Wolf. He has won countless music awards in Australia and his songs have been featured in the film Limitless, starring Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro, and most recently on the TV show Nashville. Along with this latest tour, Grunwald has also been working on a new album, his eighth, on the heels of his most recent recording, Gargantua Due out globally in September, the album, entitled NOW, features first single River, currently being played in Australia and will be heard live on Grunwald’s Canadian tour. Grunwald takes the stage at the Vernon Elks Hall, 3103 30 St., Tuesday, July 14 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the Bean Scene or e-mail lenny.w@shaw.ca.

Biopic looks at opera star’s rise For The Morning Star

The Vernon Film Society begins its summer season with the inspirational film One Chance, the story of the meteoric rise to stardom of Paul Potts, winner of Britain’s Got Talent’s inaugural season in 2007. As a child, Potts was obsessed with opera. He sang at the dinner table, in the shower, at school, and obviously, in the choir. However, his talent was not appreciated by his peers and the fact that he was overweight didn’t help. As an adult, Potts worked in a cellphone store and dreamt of being an opera singer. His internet girlfriend convinced him to go to Venice and pursue his passion by attending a famed opera academy, where Potts had the opportunity to meet and sing for Pavarotti. After a series of setbacks, Potts decided to audition for Britain’s Got Talent. The rest is history. James Corden (who some will recognize as the new host of The Late, Late Show on CBS), delivers the goods as the put upon and painfully shy Potts. His scenes with Alexandra Roach, as girlfriend JulieAnn Cooper, are wonderful. The most interesting aspect of the film is the focus on Potts’ life in Wales before he travels to Italy. It’s a true fish-out-of-water tale as we watch how difficult it is for him to fit in with

the weinstein company

James Corden stars at Paul Potts in One Chance, which follows the story of the Britain’s Got Talent winner. the blue-collar community that he’s a part of. His difficulty comes from within, however, as the community at large appreciates his talents and are actually quite supportive. The tale of how Potts goes from an everyman to media sensation is a testament to the human spirit. And the singing, dubbed by the real Potts, is a delight, even for non-opera fans. “You’d have to be totally cynical, with a heart of stone and ice water in your veins, not to be even the slightest bit charmed by One Chance,” said Christy Lemire, on rogerebert.com. One Chance screens Monday at the Towne Cinema at the regular times of 5:15 and 7:45 p.m. Tickets are available one week ahead at the Towne and the Bean Scene for $7 (cash only).

CARA BRADY Morning Star Staff

Okanagan Landing Elementary Grade 4 and 5 students in Sheila Monroe’s class have taken a new look at the natural world around them with their Artstarts project on healthy ecosystems. The project, supported by a grant from the B.C. Arts Council, the school’s parental advisory council, and donations from local suppliers, helped students learn about native and invasive plants and the birds and bees necessary for a healthy ecosystem. Local experts talked to the students about plants and animals and artist Deb Humphries Friedman taught the students how to do lino block prints for T-shirts and banners. “The students are really committed and passionate and they’ve done so much work and learned so much,” said Monroe, who is proud that the students’ work has been selected to be part of a B.C. Arts Council show in Vancouver this summer to showcase Artstarts projects from around the province. “I enjoyed working with the class. This is a fantastic example of cross-curriculum learning, math, biology, research and art. The teacher, students, and everyone involved have done a great job,” said Humphries Friedman. The students were eager to talk about the project. “I liked the art we did for the poster and banner,” said Hailyn Willett. “I found five of the invasives in our yard. lino block print of the yellow flag iris with the international symbol for “not allowed” as a reminder of what the plant can do. Connor Daly liked learning about the birds of the area. “We learned about the morning dove and the gold-

finch and a lot of native plants. The nodding onion (allium cernuum) was used by First Nations as food. And we should have milkweed because the Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on it,” he said. The students found a number of invasive plant species on the school grounds. “People think these plants are pretty and so they spread them around but there are lots of native plants that are pretty that you can plant,” said MacKenna Doyle.

Try some salmon on the grill

don’t know about the rest of you, but I am “hamburgered” out this week and need to try something totally different on my barbecue. I’ve chosen salmon, as it’s delicious and so good for you. The first recipe has a simple soy sauce and brown sugar marinade, with hints of lemon and garlic, and is the perfect salty-sweet complement to rich salmon fillets. Cathi Litzenberger The second recipe uses a delicious white wine garlic marinade, which gives it amazing flavour and keeps it nice and moist when grilled on the barbecue. This will be a definite favourite for family and guests alike.

In a small bowl, stir together soy sauce, brown sugar, water, and vegetable oil until sugar is dissolved. Place fish in a large re-sealable plastic bag with the soy sauce mixture, seal, and turn to coat. Refrigerate for at least two hours. Preheat grill for medium heat. Lightly oil grill grate. s I observe a duck on Kalamalka Lake I realize it presents a laudable metaphor for human existence. Above waterline it, and we by extension, appear outwardly composed, gliding across the surface of life, yet below water line resides an engine room, the frantic hidden frenzy of thrashing legs, working constantly to keep the creature Dr. April Sanders afloat. We learn early to hide the frenetic underbelly, as it is the place where shame, fear, guilt, anger and the imperfect person we are, resides. Unfortunately, it requires a soul-sucking amount of energy to hide the engine room. How sad to die never having had the opportunity to fully express the outer and inner parts of the self, always driven to hide the fears and by default, give up the opportunity to be just you. It takes effort to look below an individual’s surface, beyond the patina that makes everyone appear the same, yet I find this vulnerable part the most interesting part of us all. It is the end product of our genetics, upbringing, life experiences and the travails we have survived. It is the sum total of events that have molded

he Greater Vernon Museum & Archives and the Vernon & District Family History Society are teaming up once again to offer a number of Pleasant Valley Cemetery Walking Tours this summer. The Saturday tour dates include: July 11, Aug. 8 and Sept. 12. Each tour will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery and last approximately two hours. For this tour Lawrna has kept six of the subjects from the previous tour and added ten new ones. Even if you came to last year’s tour you’re sure to learn something new! Following the tour a light lunch will be served at the museum where tour guide Lawrna Myers will be available to answer any further questions. The museum will also have more information on display about the historical figures mentioned during the tour. Tickets are $20/person with a limit of 20 participants per tour. To avoid disappointment you’re strongly encouraged to purchase tickets early. Tickets are only available at the museum and will not be available on the event date. Participants are asked to wear good walking shoes as the tour involves a considerable amount of walking and standing. For more information call the museum at 250-5423142 or visit www.vernonmuseum.ca or www.facebook.com/vernonmuseum.

Some hard work means a local waterway is a little cleaner. Members and staff of Tween Lakes Resort have been taking care of the Oyama channel for boaters for a number of years. “The channel gets thousands of boaters passing through it as it is the only passage between Kalamalka and Wood lakes,” said Brian Reese, park manager. Among the items recently removed from the water were old brick anchors, tires, bottles, beer cans, and sticks and logs left behind from beavers. “You can see all of the prop nicks on the logs, and visualize the cost of repairs to the many boaters,” said member Larry Hollier. “Five years ago, one of our members even disassembled a ship wrecked houseboat that had been abandoned years ago. It’s understood the channel is a federal waterway, and that no one stakes claims to keeping it dredged deep enough for clear passage of recreational boaters to pass through.” The last time the channel was dredged was in 1998 at the cost of the resort community on Wood Lake.

Instead, they’re there to gently remind dog owners about the responsible dog ownership bylaw and how to be a respectful neighbour.”

Perfect Tigers open playoff push Morning Star Staff

The final buzzer sounded and the players rejoiced. The Vernon Source for Sports Tigers became the first team to finish the Thompson Okanagan Junior Lacrosse League season 16-0 following their 14-9 victory over the South Okanagan Flames Saturday night. They shared the moment by huddling together at centre ice and saluting the more than 300 fans in attendance at Kal Tire Place. “It doesn’t get any better than this,” exclaimed Tigers’ coach Chris Scabar. Chris Scabar “I’m really proud of these guys. They played strong defence and worked hard all year long and it has paid off.” The Tigers received four goals from first star Quintin Harrish and a hatty from Ryan Sarazin. The Cats jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led 5-2 after the first frame. The two teams combined for 13 goals in a fiesta of a second period. Darrell Landels and Jay Seaton each supplied two goals, while Kyle Cuzzetto, Jordan Orr and Tre Mason added singles. Jeremy Gray made 44 stops in his second start between the pipes for the Cats. “We are over the history now. We had one night to enjoy it, and it was awesome, but we want to go out, bear down and win a championship,” said Scabar. The Tigers’ locker room was filled with cheers, hugs and a great sense of accomplishment following their spotless regular season, according to their leading goal scorer Sarazin. “It was awesome and a special feeling,” said Sarazin, who still has one more year of eligibility remaining with the Cats. “This is the closest group of guys we have had since I have been here and we want to keep going and keep pressing.” Sarazin stated that no matter what happens in the playoffs and provinicals– should the Tigers get there – nothing can take away their regular season accomplishment. The Tigers and Armstrong Shamrocks

(5-11) played Game 1 Tuesday night at Kal Tire Place in a rematch of last year’s opening round when the Tigers swept the Shamrocks 3-0. “Players change all the time and there is no thinking back to last year for our guys. They will be ready to go,” said Shamrocks’ assistant coach Chad Pieper. The Shamrocks will be without their leading scorer Owen Barker as he went to the Junior A New Westminster Salmonbellies. “Joel (Castle) is going to have to carry the weight for us,” said Pieper. Castle was second on the Rocks with 22 goals and 54 points. The Shamrocks are satisfied with how they are positioned in the playoffs, believing that all the pressure is on the Tigers. “I’d rather be the underdog than the favourite. We are going to pull out all the stops and see if we can surprise them,” said Pieper. The Shamrocks played the Tigers tight all year. In their first three meetings, the Shamrocks lost by an average of three goals. The Tigers outlasted the Shamrocks 19-10 in their last outing. Players better do up their chin straps and bring extra ice bags because this series is not going to be played in the library. The two teams claim five of the top 10 penalized players. The Shamrocks’ Colby Erickson led the way with 85 penalty minutes in eight games. “It is going to be hard-nosed lacrosse and we are going to play them very tough on defence,” said Scabar. “We’ve got guys like Thomas Landels, Ethan Anderson and Braden Barr who will make things difficult for their forwards out there.” For the second straight year, Aaron Jensen of the Tigers finished as the top goaltender. He finished with a 7.31 goals against average and a .855 save percentage in 14 games. Jensen has backed up Gray the past two games. Scabar planned to annouce his starting netminder hours before the game. The Shamrocks are likely to counter with Cole MacFarlane, who recorded a 12.06 GAA and a .754 save percentage in 15 games. The Shamrocks lost 16-5 to the Kamloops Venom in their regular season finale Saturday night at Memorial Arena. Nic Yadernuk sniped two goals and an assist, while Mykl Drabuik supplied 1+2

Yadernuk finished third in scoring with 16 goals and 28 points. Marlon Forrest and Sam Hanley added singles. The Tigers-Shamrocks Game 2 will be Thursday, 7:30 p.m., at Nor-Val Sports Centre, and Game 3 returns to Kal Tire Place Saturday (7:30 p.m.). The Flames (10-6) will take on the Venom (7-1-8) in the other semifinal. The Flames owned the league’s top offence with 196 goals. Chris Pond (38+74), Mitch Brodt (44+39) and Kaid MacLeod (31+31)

finished 1-2-3 in league scoring. The Flames will play their home games in Kelowna while the ice is getting installed at Memorial Arena in Penticton. Game 1 went last night at Memorial Arena in Kelowna. Game 2 will be Thursday, 7:30 p.m., at Memorial Arena in Kamloops. The league final is slated to start Friday, July 17. The playoff champion will represent the TOJLL at the provincial Junior B championships July 31-Aug. 2 in Saanich. Brothers capture 89th Hankey Cup Morning Star Staff

Dave Valouch of Vernon and Kristian Kiland of Prince George each claimed two tiles in the 89th Hankey Cup Doubles Tennis Championships hosted by the Kalamalka Country Club. Spectators were entertained to some high-caliber tennis last weekend with brothers Jim Condon and Kristian Kiland defeating Al Lincoln and Daniel Kotai of Kamloops 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 in the men’s A doubles final. In the semis, Condon and Kiland won over Jeremy Bell of Vernon and West Martin-Patterson of Salmon Arm 6-5, 4-6, 10-6, while Lincoln and Kotai grounded Jason Shumay and Jerry Reinhardt of Vernon 6-1, 6-1. Bell and Martin-Patterson led 5-2 in the first set and a loss for Condon and Kiland seemed inevitable. The brothers fought back valiantly and took the first set in a tiebreaker (played at 5-5). The second set went to Bell and Martin-Patterson, forcing a 10-point tiebreaker. The brothers’ post-match victory celebration was entertainment in itself. This is the first time in several years where the title has not been held by a competitor from Vernon. The friendship and rivalry between the players will resume again in Kelowna where the Alpha-Zulu Tournament takes place July 17-19. In the men’s B doubles finals, the Kal Club twosome of Morris

Vardabasso and Dave Valouch dispatched David Claeys (Lavington) and Ben Johnson (Lake Country) 6-0, 6-1. Mark Corbett and Pat Hughes of Kal placed fourth. In the ladies A doubles, the results were determined by placements in the round-robin. Meryl Ogden (Kal Club) and Kristina Lidster (Kamloops) ruled with set scores of 7-1. Krista Martin and Suppa Phonechiangkwang of Kelowna were second at 5-3. The ladies B doubles featured an all-Vernon final with Barb Klopfenstein and Lisa Sousa brushing back Linda Borger and Wendi Varley 6-5, 6-1. Karalee Drdul and Pam Davidson, both of the host club, finished fifth. Pro set scores were used for mixed doubles. In the mixed A finals, five teams had 3-2 records and the winner was determined by which team won the most games. Fran Mann of Kelowna and Kiland topped the pool by winning 37 games. The mixed B doubles final was captured by the Vernon pair of Sandra Leidl and Dave Valouch, who lost only one set (8-1). Tournament directors Ray Kimoto and Gordon Mann praised their hard-working tennis committee of Karalee Drdul-Mann, Dave Valouch, Gary Davidson and Alice Kimoto, the kitchen crew of Nadine Poznanski and Jill Holmes, groundskeeper Lee Noonan and Voets Coffee.

Vancouver Mounties used a seven-run seventh inning to upend the Vernon Canadians 13-4 in Sunday’s final of the South Okanagan Tigers Invitational Bantam AA Baseball Tournament. Vernon had lost 11-0 to Vancouver in roundrobin action Saturday. The gold-medal tilt was different with Vernon staying close through six innings. Starting pitcher Alex Tonge mowed down six batters through five innings of work. Evan Schmidt jumpstarted the Canadians’ attack with a double to left field and advanced to third on a balk. Matthew Hansen followed with a hard single up the middle to score Schmidt at Carmi Park. Ryan Gamage (game MVP) came up and scared a bunch of spectators on the other side of the left field fence with a bomb to cash Hansen and himself to give the C’s a 3-1 lead after one inning. Tight defence on both sides kept things tight. Dakota Becker, who went 2-for-3, was brilliant behind the plate.

The Vernon Canadians grounded the Victoria Eagles and snapped a seven-game losing skid in their B.C. AAA Midget Baseball League games Saturday at Marshall Field. Dylan Emmons carved up the 14-25 Eagles and led the Canadians to a 2-1 victory. Emmons mowed down 10 Eagles in a complete game two-hitter. “After getting a much needed break from pitching, Emmons was back to his dominant self. His curveball was nasty and he placed his fastball with precision,” said Canadians’ coach Ken Liefke. “It was good to see him back to his old self.” Emmons has punched out 119 batters in 72 innings. Tyler Wellman had the clutch gene working when he went 2-for-3 at the plate and cashed in Tyler Liefke, who returned from the disabled list, for the winning RBI in the sixth. Kyle Ciurka and Kadyn Thomas both went 1-for-2. The C’s (10-29) received another stellar start on LISA VANDERVELDE/MORNING STAR the mound when Brayden Damini went the distance for the 5-0 blanking of the Eagles in Game 2. Becker was brilliant behind the plate and kept Vancouver honest by gunning several runners out at second with hard tags made by Hayden Lewis. Vancouver’s bats woke up in the open seventh. On Sunday morning, the Canadians scored four times in the final inning for a 16-10 semifinal win over the Tigers. Ben Fortems was on the mound again, going three innings while striking out two and helping his own cause with two singles. It was 10-9 Vernon after four innings and 12-10 after six. Schmidt (MVP) had a monster showing at the plate, almost hitting for the cycle with four RBI and two runs. Hansen drove in three runs on four hits and scored three times, while Braydie Allen went 3-for3 with three runs. Vernon’s defence was spot on as well with Koll Cherkowski, Hansen, Lewis, Falcon Thomas and Gamage all registering two outs in their various positions. Schmidt came in to pitch the fifth and sixth, fanning four and allowing one run. Vernon scored four in the final inning with Ryan Vandesande leading off with a single. Vandesande, Cherkowski, Schmidt and Hansen all scored with Fortems registering the last RBI. Tonge struck out a pair in the bottom of the inning. Hansen and Cherkowski were the only players to register hits in the shutout loss to Vancouver. Schmidt and Thomas shared the pitching duties. Thomas was game MVP. In their opening tilt Friday night, the C’s ambushed the Edmonton Blue Jays 12-5 with game MVP Tonge setting down eight batters in 2.2 innings with only two runs allowed.

Moderately Confused

Bridge by Phillip Alder CASHING IN ON A SECOND CHANCE Emil Zatopek from Czechoslovakia, who won four Olympic gold medals, including the 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters and marathon in 1952, said, “One day the factory sports coach, who was very strict, pointed at four boys, including me, and ordered us to run in a race. I protested that I was weak and not fit to run, but ... a doctor said that I was perfectly well. So I had to run, and when I got started I felt I wanted to win. But I only came in second. That was the way it started.” At the bridge table, we sometimes get only one chance to make or break a contract, but occasionally a

second opportunity comes along. It would be irksome to miss both. In this deal, South was in four hearts. West led the spade two. What happened after that? South’s three-heart rebid was game-invitational. This was a tad cautious, but his singleton diamond rated to be a minus. North, though, with a suitable-looking maximum, had no hesitation in raising to four hearts. An opening lead of the club eight would have defeated the contract quickly. However, West started with his lowest spade, a sensible choice. South saw 10 tricks: three spades, five hearts and two diamonds. Not wishing to risk suffering a ruff, he

won with his spade jack, cashed the heart ace, and led another heart. But West took his second chance: He won with his king and, in answer to his partner’s club-10 discard, shifted to that suit. He ruffed the third round for down one. Keep running toward your target.

It is with both great sadness and joy that we announce the passing of Linda Long from this stage of being. Linda is survived by her husband of 45 years, Gary Long; her 3 children: Cara Long (Joe), Brian Long, and Jane Long-Haggerty (Brian); 4 very special granddaughters: Emily, Caitlyn, Mackenzie-Linne, and Kamea; 2 sisters, Dianne and Sharon; and so many others whose lives she touched and filled with love. Gary and Linda met at Simon Fraser University, where Gary looked across the quadrangle at the frosh dance and saw a bright star. That star was Linda. From that moment on, Gary knew he had found his love, his best friend, his true soul mate. Linda was a nurturing mother and teacher. She was always so proud of her children and grandchildren and had many life changing experiences with them. Linda taught for many years in Vancouver and Kamloops. Gary and Linda moved to Vernon in 1991 and she began substitute teaching, moving to part-time then eventually full time where she taught at West Vernon Elementary for her remaining teaching years. West Vernon Elementary held a special place in her heart and when the school was closed, Linda decided to retire. Linda and Gary travelled the world, often with loved ones, creating cherished memories. A special thank you to Dr. Waldron, Dr. Martyn, and all the nursing staff at Vernon Jubilee for helping Linda through her journey. Friends and Family wishing to pay their respects to Linda, “the resident angel”, may do so at a Celebration of Life at All Saints Anglican Church on July 11th at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers you may make donations to Linda Long’s Cambodia School Fund on Fund Me or make blood donations to the local blood bank.

Services for Howard will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lumby. Prayers will be recited on Wednesday, July 8th, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 9th, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Father Vincent, Celebrant. A reception will follow in the church hall. Arrangements have been entrusted to Pleasant Valley Funeral Home, Phone: 250 542 4333. Condolences may be offered at www.pleasantvalleyfh.com

Wildlife focus of SPCA photography contest living birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish and insects, but not exotic, feral or domestic animals, or wildlife in
