19 Wing sending members to Nepal Erin Haluschak Record Staff

With 14 hours’ notice, a sevenmember team composed of firefighters from 19 Wing Comox left the Valley Sunday afternoon to offer disaster assistance to those affected by the 7.8-magnitude quake in Nepal which hit the country Saturday.

More than 4,000 dead, thousands more injured in 7.8-magnitude earthquake The members are part of a light urban search and rescue team, tasked to assist the Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) out of Trenton, Ont., explained Lt.-Col. Clinton Mowbray, acting wing commander for

CFB Comox. “They’ll be put on the ground and the first concern of the team is to make sure the area is safe to operate in. Once they’ve made that determination, they’ll work with other members of the Cana-

dian Forces and other nations that are providing assistance … to start helping to see if they can find any survivors and provide relief to the survivors in Nepal,” he explained to media. Mowbray said Canada is usually one of the first countries to offer assistance to nations in need.

Kensington Island Properties saga enters its 16th year with no resolution in sight.

A group of concerned nurses is advocating local governments for action to deal with homelessness in the Comox Valley. The local network of the Association of Registered Nurses of B.C. hopes to re-establish the regional district as the governance body for a regional strategy to end homelessness. The group notes the 2008 City of Courtenay Mayor’s Task force and a number of ensuing studies have addressed the issue. Among the task force recommendations was a housing first approach. A non-binding question at the last municipal election indicates voters are in favour of a tax to reduce homelessness. They were given three options: pay nothing, up to $5 or up to $10 for a home assessed at $300,000. The latter garnered the most votes – by a substantial margin – in each of the four Comox Valley electoral districts. The association also notes the CVRD awarded a contract to the Dawn to Dawn Action on Homelessness Society for a scattered housing program.

Hope remains afloat through dragon boating Erin Haluschak Record Staff

Janice McAuley knows what it’s like to lose a year of her life. One of the original members of the Hope Afloat dragon boat team in Comox, McAuley recalls what it was like to have cancer. “Between chemo and radiation, it takes a whole year out of your life. Support is huge,” she notes. After finishing her treatment for breast cancer, she explains she had to find a way to transition back to life. But life post-cancer wasn’t what it used to be, and she found the support — emotional, mental and physical — just wasn’t there. “It’s gone, and you’re life has changed. You need to find something to keep your balance and support.” Thanks to a suggestion from her chemo-mate, that’s exactly what McAuley did. Following her treatment, she connected with the dragon boat team, and found an avenue which supports and encourages women of all ages, and now, all cancers, to encourage a heathy lifestyle through dragon boating. “It’s now a worldwide phenomenon,” she says. “It began as a small group in 2001 - mostly as a support group - but they decided to create a team.” The team began as a group for women who had battled breast cancer, but they quickly realized they wanted to open the doors to women of all cancers, explains McAuley. The sport continues to grow, and currently there are half a dozen teams in the Comox Valley, she adds, but Hope Afloat is the only team dedicated to women who have had cancer. Currently, they have about 35 members, but they hope to increase membership to around 40. The team participates in races, anywhere from Vancouver to Port Hardy, but in past years, they have ventured to Seattle for large events. Paddler Glenda Wilson, along with her teammates Leona Peter and Melanie Bagley, says there

The Hope Afloat dragon boat team practises every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer. are various reasons for joining the team, including support, wellbeing, and a sense of community. “To have fun is very important; it’s our number one priority,” she adds. In addition to its work in the water, the team gives back to the community in a variety of ways, including two bursaries, a tag day for the cancer care department at St. Joseph’s Hospital and a workshop dealing with the fear of cancer reoccurrence. “Living with a Dragon workshop was excellent … it was something we did last fall, and when you have cancer, there’s not much available or much programming afterwards,” says Bagley. "It was cutting edge - almost 100 people attended and we’re hoping to do it again this fall.

THE GROUND BREAKING

“Many cancer survivors live with fear, and they don’t live a full life; many people don’t realize they end up living with the dragon.” McAuley notes the team accepts ‘support’ members - those who may not have battled cancer themselves, but have a close connection to someone who does. She adds there is no age limit to joining the team either. The team practises at the Comox harbour, Saturday mornings until the end of the month, and Tuesday and Thursday evening until the end of September. Haiti is a great example a few years ago; Canada was one of the first countries on the ground and delivered a substantial amount of assistance.” The team hopes to be able to help with survivors, but also people who have been recovered and may not have homes, he added. They will also be providing assistance with clean water, hospital facilities and medical attention. Sgt. David Hillier, one of the seven members heading to Nepal, said once they meet up with the DART team in Trenton, their goal is to locate victims or people trapped in rubble piles - sometimes for days - using sonar or acoustic equipment onboard their plane. “Any area that has a large disaster, one of the things that we usually come across is the local population is usually in full swing of getting things organized and looking for victims, so infrastructure is usually under a lot of damage in those areas. We except to see a lot of rubble, a lot of buildings (down) ... and a lot of civilians looking for survivors.” Along with seven members from the DART team, the 14

Organizers say the annual Comox Valley Scotiabank MS Walk on April 19 was "fantastic" with 104 walkers registered but many more turning out to participate. Top fundraisers this year were Andrea Martin ($6,260), Grace Willis ($3,245) and Wendy Merrick ($2,535). Proceeds from the event stay with the Vancouver Island Chapter of the MS Society of Canada.

There will also be a special excerpt performance from the upcoming TheatreWorks play Threads of Change about the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire of 1911 in New York that killed 147 workers. Of course there is the main course: the bean supper. During the 1912 strike, miners evicted from company houses were forced to live with their families in tents on “Striker’s Beach”. As a compassionate gesture, or perhaps as a way to deflate rising tensions, the provincial government sent boxcars of dried navy beans for the strikers and their families. Big Strike Beans kept them alive over the long winter. For our supper the beans are accompanied by corn bread, cole slaw and a dessert, and perhaps a glass of something from the Cumberland Brewing Co. Annual Workers’ Bean Supper Friday Friday, May 1 community members and friends of the Cumberland Museum & Archives will come together to celebrate the struggles and triumphs of working people around the world. Since its inception in 1997, Workers’ Day Bean Supper has become an anticipated annual community gathering in Cumberland. While International Workers’ Day, May 1, isn’t an official holiday in Canada today, it held a significant spot on the calendar for the miners and other workers throughout Cumberland’s history; and is celebrated as a national holiday in more than 80 countries around the world. This year’s event will feature musical guests Trinitude, a Celtic-folk family trio from Nanaimo whose repertoire includes traditional and original songs inspired by the lives of Vancouver Island miners.

He would prefer to table the addendum until councils comment on the referral package. “There’s no service, there’s no program or function, there’s no process, there’s no money,” Kishi said. “So it seems a bit premature for something like that to come forward. Nobody else has been given an opportunity to submit a proposal. There’s lots of other agencies that are working on different forms of housing for their particular client.” District CAO Deb Oakman said all information received concerning homelessness is positive.

“There are a lot of ideas,” she said. “The more we share the better.” Area C director Edwin Grieve noted the possibility of burnout in organizations such as Dawn to Dawn and the Salvation Army that invest a great deal of time on a “shoestring budget.” He welcomes the opportunity to consider the homelessness issue with “brand new eyes.” “We have to look at it as a brand new initiative,” Grieve said. The referral package will also include a questionnaire to help the CVRD board determine whether a specific regional service should be established to address homelessness. Questions ask, for instance, if jurisdictions would support such a service and how it should be established. Results will be presented at committee of the whole June 23. The objective is to determine whether to proceed to a referendum or alternate approval process regarding a regional service. reporter@comoxvalleyrecord.com

Beware election year budgets

T

he federal Conservatives put forth their budget Tuesday, and few political watchers were surprised by what it contained. Many of the promises and appropriations contained therein were spelled out well before the budget hit the floor of Parliament. While every budget can (and should) be seen as a campaign document – in that being responsible for the public’s financial contributions to our society is a government’s main role – we should be wary of budgets that directly precede elections. Many of the promises in this particular Conservative government’s budget only happen if they are re-elected, making them less budget items and more of a platform on which they are campaigning. An example is the additional funding being made available to municipalities to improve transit infrastructure, which is slated to begin flowing in 2017. They also announced they have lowered the tax rate on small businesses, and teased that “our government will reduce the tax rate further, all the way down to nine per cent by 2019,” Finance Minister Joe Oliver said in his speech, again, assuming his party is re-elected. It might have been nice to see some commitment from the federal government in terms of diversifying our energy sector, so we’re not relying so heavily on the price of oil to drive our economy. The federal government’s coffers are so heavily dependent on contributions from the oil and gas sector that dropping oil prices demanded a recalculation of the entire structure of the budget, delaying its release, in fact. Then again, diversifying doesn’t play well with the Conservative base. And that’s what this budget is. It’s the government saying, “If you like these things, make sure you do your part to help us get re-elected.” It’s not a budget, really. It’s more of a campaign speech.

here is always something particularly gratifying about being recognized by your peers for outstanding work. Over the weekend, the staff of the Comox Valley Record experienced just that. The Record received the BC Yukon Newspapers Association Ma Murray Newspaper Excellence Award. Your local read has been deemed the best community newspaper in the province. Judging for the Ma Murrays is done by journalists, meaning the Comox Valley Record has been deemed the best newspaper by those in the business, and that’s an achievement of which we are all proud. Here’s what the judges said in their summation: “The Comox Valley Record makes a very strong first impression. From the front page on, this paper leaves no doubt about its absolute connection to the community. With strong local features, a wide and pleasing rotation of regular columns, unmatched sports coverage, and a thorough classified section, I learned more about what was happening in the region than with any other read in the category. Clean and sharp, with relevant, well-cropped photos and thorough, complete stories. Nice design, good section headings, and overall great layout. Excellent work!”

Record Question of the Week

It was not the only honour we received on Saturday evening. The Record also received a silver medal for Best Special Section, for our election coverage supplement, Options 2014. For that publication, the judges said: “Absolutely brilliant idea! To the point (yes or no) and so politically pertinent, it hurts! Great job.”

Being recognized for this special section was especially sweet for our staff. From an editorial standpoint, I speak on behalf of the entire department by saying it was the most stressful special section we have ever worked on; it even involved a “stop the presses” moment. It was interesting that The Record was not up for a single individual award, and yet we won gold and silver in the only two team category awards we entered - a clear statement as to the strength of this publication’s team.

The timing of the awards is also appropriate. We know that comCOMMEN-TERRY placency is the first step towards extinction, and we are only as good as our last edition. With ERRY that in mind, next year’s submissions to the Ma ARRELL Murray Awards will have a very different look to them. The Record will be introducing a complete rebranding on Thursday, and you are going to like what we’ve done. So we bask in the glory of an award-winning year in 2014, but now it’s time to move “onward and upward.” Congratulations to all the staff at The Record. And for the readers, enjoy what we have coming. It’s going to be another banner year at 765 McPhee Ave.

Seniors’ advocate a toothless tiger Dear editor, Antidepressant and antipsychotic drugs are overused in B.C.’s long-term residential care facilities, reports Isobel McKenzie, Senior’s Advocate for B.C. Ms. McKenzie suggests that timely intervention by staff would be better than drugs. This is a simple but naïve - or willfully ignorant - suggestion from our B.C.’s Senior’s Advocate. Between 2002 and 2004, the B.C. government closed 2,500 non-profit complex care beds, replacing them, in part, with assisted living housing and support services in the community.

Letters to the Editor Send your letter to editor@comoxvalleyrecord.com, or drop it off at the Record office, 765 McPhee Ave. Please keep letters to a maximum of 300 words and sign with your name and hometown. We reserve the right to publish and to edit for space/clarity. Opinions expressed in Letters to the Editor are the sole opinion of the author and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the paper.

Since then, as the need for more beds to serve complex care clients has grown, the number of beds hasn’t kept up. Residents today are more ill, frail, and more likely to have dementia as the key diagnosis that brought them

into residential care. These increased care needs are happening at a time when the staff mix has lowered RN numbers in preference to LPNs, and diminished support services (physical, occupational and recreational therapy).

There simply are not enough hands and eyes to witness, anticipate and intervene in situations of emotional distress and disruptive behaviour. The alternative is medication, not out of choice, but out of need to manage, somehow. Ms. McKenzie’s facts and suggestion aren’t wrong but they aren’t enough. They need to be followed up with a statement of her intention to look at the causative factors. Without that, the office of Seniors Advocate is a toothless tiger.

Many questions remain unanswered in clearcutting debate Dear editor, While it is true that there are innumerable laws on the books to control violations of logging practices, what we don’t have is proper enforcement of all these laws. Yes, we had significant rainfall and that rainfall had to go somewhere. But the simple fact remains that if you clearcut sidehills with-

out regard to what Mother Nature might do, the result is likely to be what happened in the Cruickshank when the rains came. What should concern everyone is what steps are being taken to remedy this situation. Everyone in authority appears to be either ignoring the problem or pleading ignorance of the situation. While

I agree that there is plenty of ignorance to go around this does nothing to remedy this problem. Here are a few of the questions I have. Where is our intrepid MLA, supposed protector of all things Comox Valley? And what is the regional district’s take on this, especially after stating publicly that they would look into the

contingency funds. As a retired individual I too have to maintain a balanced budget where my expenses do not exceed my earnings. If I have to withdraw from my savings and/or sell my house to make ends

meet can I really say I have balanced my budget? Likewise I have a lot of trouble accepting the “balanced budget” spin being provided by our two senior levels of government. One thing for sure is our national and provincial

wealth is definitely less. A little honesty might go a long way to restoring some credibility to both levels of government. Jim Stevenson Courtenay

Film fest raises big bucks for Cumberland skatepark Dear editor, With the assistance of the Cumberland Community Schools Society (CCSS), Cumberland youth organized and hosted the fifth annual Cumberland Mountain Film Festival on April 10. The Cumberland Mountain Film Festival is the only festival that features exclusively local content and is organized right here in the Comox Valley. The sold-out crowd enjoyed a selection of short outdoor adventure films from around Vancouver Island. Outstanding films included kiteboarding at Goose Spit, surfing on the west coast, mountain biking through scenic Cumberland, and the first winter ascent of Mount Harmston. The festival raised more than $1,300 for the Cumber-

land Skatepark Project. CCSS is a registered charity that offers a healthy food program, free after-school programs, and community programs for Cumberland residents of all ages. The CCSS skatepark committee is partnering with the Village of Cumberland to provide Cumberland with its own skatepark. In addition, CCSS recently started offering more programs and services for youth in Cumberland, including a newly opened youth centre with youth programs and numerous leadership opportunities. NIC nursing student new president of CNSA A North Island College nursing student is changing the face of nursing education across Canada, becoming the first NIC student elected to lead a national organization. Dawn Tisdale is the new president of the Canadian Nursing Students’ Association, the voice of nearly 30,000 student nurses across Canada. “It’s still registering with me,” said Tisdale. “Across Canada many nursing students don’t know where we’re located, but they know about our focus on aboriginal health.” One of her first goals is to act on a resolution to ensure registered nursing students understand aboriginal health perspectives before they graduate. The resolution would see nursing students work with the Aboriginal Nursing Association of Canada to lobby for curriculum changes. Ben-Zion Eni, owner of The Hub Café, says foot traffic is just one of the draws to being downtown. Photo Submitted

Good time to be downtown With just a few weeks to go before the Downtown Courtenay Business Improvement Association’s AGM, two of downtown’s newer business owners are encouraging anyone thinking of opening a business to attend the meeting and find out what all the buzz is about. Since opening Finders Keep Hers Boutique & Fine Consignment in April 2013, Alicia MacPherson has grown her clientele considerably. She largely attributes that growth to three things: location, location and location. “We chose to locate downtown for a number of reasons,” she explains. “But the best part is that it's always so busy and there’s always a cheerful type of energy here. I can’t imagine being anywhere else; we just love it!” Ben-Zion Eni, owner of The Hub Café on Duncan Avenue, echoes MacPherson’s sentiments. “The best part for me is the close feeling of community,” says Eni, whose small eatery is approaching its first anniversary. “There’s a real sense of fellowship and camaraderie downtown. The support we get from other businesses is great, and it’s just cool being part of this historic area.” When Eni decided to open a restaurant, he says he knew it had to be downtown. “I’ve always loved shopping downtown and, whenever I would, I’d notice there are always people around — no matter the weather or time of year. We get a ton of foot traffic, and that’s the

real draw.” It’s not just traffic that’s drawing businesses toward the city centre, however. With average downtown lease and triple net rates far lower than many other Comox Valley locales, opening a business downtown makes a lot of financial sense. “Obviously being surrounded by great restaurants and a variety of other businesses is an attraction,” says DCBIA vice-president Jenny Deters. “But what many of our merchants like are all the events that go on down here, such as Elevate the Arts, Local Colours and Market Days. And with all the walk-in traffic, money that might otherwise be spent on marketing can be directed elsewhere.” Deters notes that with some longstanding businesses closing due to retirements, there are a few retail spaces available — something she’s eager to speak about as chair of the DCBIA’s Business Recruitment and Retention Committee. “It’s a great time to be downtown; you can feel that renewed sense of energy. With people like Ben and Alicia, the new Gladstone Brewery and a clothing store opening up at Fifth and England, the future looks even brighter downtown!” The AGM is at 6 p.m. May 20 at the Courtenay Museum. For more information and a calendar of downtown events, visit downtowncourtenay.com. To learn more about retail space opportunities, contact Deters at jenny.rattanplus@gmail.com.

THE ARTS TUESDAY, APRIL 28, 2015

Medley rounding into form The Bates Beach Farm Jazz Series is thrilled to present a very special In The Round performance with Sue Medley & Friends, this Saturday at the Little Red Church Comox at 7 p.m., featuring Mary Murphy, Mae Moore, Paul Keim and John Mang. Juno Award winner Sue Medley is one of Canada’s most acclaimed female singer/songwriters. With a string of radio hits including Dangerous Times, Maybe The Next Time, When The Stars Fall and touring success with the likes of John Mellencamp, Bob Dylan and many more, Sue Medley has earned a reputation as one of the best. Medley’s newest release, These Are The Days, features all new songs, including the 2014 Vancouver Island Music Awards pop/rock song of the year High Time. The album received three more VIMA nominations for 2015. This album is a reflection of her life experiences while retaining the classic Medley sound of West Coast roots rock, richly mixed with soaring vocals and sizzling slide guitars. Saturday’s performance will feature some of Canada’s finest musicians, singers and songwriters, all of whom have dedicated their lives to the art and craft of music. The performance will be 'in the round', a unique performance format that brings out the best in every performer. Special guest Mae Moore has many claims to fame. As a recording artist, Moore was a major label success story, scoring

nine top-40 hits, two Juno nominations and two SOCAN Awards for commercial radio airplay. As an indie artist, Moore has most recently garnered two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for solo artist of the year and English songwriter of the year. She continues to attract a sizable fan-base to both her live performances and recordings. As a personality, Moore is Canada’s quintessential Bohemian, being a musician, painter and long-time environmentalist, who has lived all over Canada and who now makes her home on an organic farm and heritage orchard in the Gulf Islands. Medley’s other special guest is Mary Murphy. It may be her gift of melody and lyric that is so attractive or her rich and seemingly effortless vocal style or perhaps that enticingly warm Irish nature, but whatever moves this woman, these qualities promote and sustain fans from every age group and from every walk of life. Murphy’s authenticity takes first generation immigrants home again, giving those with Irish roots a taste of inheritance and ushers those who wish they were a wee bit Irish into an ephemeral union. In 2008 Murphy began to tour with Will Millar (Irish Rovers founder) as his featured singer. Will calls her voice “The Heart and Soul of Ireland.” Saturday’s performance will include Murphy’s Irish-inclined songs and a few “out of the Irish box” tunes.

Guest musician Paul Keim is a local songwriter, guitarist, music producer and engineer. As owner/operator of Dove Creek Recording Studio in Courtenay, Keim is continually immersed in a rich musical world and has been Murphy’s guitarist/producer/collaborator since the two met almost 20 years ago. Keim views writing as a craft and writes with the awareness of all he has heard in the past, striving to bring this awareness to the recording studio. “I am always working on the pulse of a tune, be it a guitar that sits there chugging along or a simple Weissenborn slide guitar supporting a vocal.” Keim has been involved in a multitude of styles, everything from acoustic instrumentals to electric blues, singer/songwriter to Irish folk.

Headlining at this month’s Fat Oyster Reading Series is CBC Literary Award author Jane Eaton Hamilton. She is a twotime first prize winner of the CBC Literary Awards most recently in 2014. Along with Hamilton fellow authors Maleea Acker, David Fraser and Patricia Smekal, Hamilton will be reading at the Fanny Bay Hall on Wednesday, April 29. The Fat Oyster does it again with a wonderful line-up of authors this month. Hamilton is author of eight books, most recently the poetry collection Love Will Burst into a Thousand Shapes (2014). This work has been described as intimate, sexy, grief-stricken, witty and urbane. She has written for the Globe and Mail, Macleans, the New York Times and many other magazines and journals; and has won numerous literary and arts awards.

Joining her is Maleea Acker, an author and teacher who is completing a PhD in cultural geography at the University of Victoria. Acker’s most recent book, Air-Proof Green (2013), is a collection of poetry that crosses continents and asks the essential question, How do we live in the world? Her previous book, Gardens Aflame: Garry Oak Meadows on BC’s South Coast (2012), is a wonderful book that examines her relationship to the Garry Oak forest, and has been described as a lyrical and ethical parable. Her poetry and non-fiction has been published by numerous literary journals. She is a director for the Garry Oak Ecosystems Recovery Team. Patricia Smekal and David Fraser will be reading from their recent book, Maybe We Could Dance, A Collaboration of Response Poems. Each live on opposite sides of Northwest Bay in Nanoose. This collection represents a wonderful collaborative process in which one author

editor@comoxvalleyrecord.com

Award-winning author in Fanny Bay NEWS

would respond to the other's writing from across the bay. This promises to be a lively spoken-word performance. This delightful Fat Oyster reading will be on Wednesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. at the Fanny Bay Hall. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The cost is by donation at the door. For more information please see the Fanny Bay Hall website at bit.ly/1zHWBGD and look for the Fat Oyster Reading page on Facebook.

Public poetry event to be hosted by poet laureate The Comox Valley’s own poet laureate is clearly taking his role seriously. Fresh off winning the Poet Laureate Search last month, opening for Shane Koyczan, then organizing a poetry walk and haiku creation event among the cherry blossoms, Kevin Flesher is far from resting on his laurels.

He has now come up with a public poetry event in the Zocalo Café this Saturday (May 2) and he is urging poets of all ages and styles to share their works. “Sign up, your name goes in a hat, when we pull it out you read for eight minutes,” he says. “How about that?” “Creating more opportunities

for more people to experience more poetry is what I do,” he says. “When good words are rolling off a thinking person’s tongue, it touches us where it tickles. The emotional energy in a room goes up; we feel more. Poetry makes us more human.” The event gets underway at 6 p.m. and there is no charge.

Medley: Special Bates Beach Jazz Series show Continued from Page 13 Keim maintains that images both musical or lyrical are the foundation to a memorable song. Multi-talented musician John Mang performs regularly with Medley. Mang is a veteran performer, multi-instrumentalist and long-time CBC music producer/ engineer. He co-produced Medley’s two most recent releases, Sue Medley & The Back Road Band EP, and These Are The Days, her recent full length album. The Bates Beach Jazz Series is made possible by the generous volunteer and financial support of the Obal family (Mike, Grace and Ben). Saturday’s performance at the Little Red Church is family friendly with a concession offer-

Teams pound the pavement at 2015 Snow to Surf Earle Couper Record Staff

In a year of firsts for the Royal LePage Comox Valley Snow to Surf Adventure Relay Race, the big question is: Who finished first? Due to confusion at the finish line Sunday afternoon, an official winner had not been declared as the Record went to press. But race chairperson Rick Gibson said it appears as if North Island Tanks out of Victoria will be the 2015 overall champions. Putting the “adventure” in the 33rd edition of the event, three legs were changed, one was cancelled, a new timing system malfunctioned, and a collision with a vehicle sent a road cyclist to hospital. This year’s mountain-tomarina race was the first to have no snow on Mount Washington. “There was one year when the alpine skiers had to carry their skis part way up then ski down,” Gibson recalled. This year’s alpine and Nordic ski legs, along with the snowshoe leg, were turned into running events. Bill Brett of the Island Honda Banzai said organizers did a good job handling the changes. Teams followed the usual mountain bike, kayak and road bike legs, but the stiff winds that had race officials worried in the morning never abated. Seven canoes launched from the Courtenay boat ramp on the final leg to the

An unfortunate set of circumstances resulted in Gilmore going off course and the Banzai being disqualified. Photo by earle couper finish line at Comox Marina Park, and four tipped. At that point the Coast Guard cancelled the leg (for only the fourth time in race history, Gibson noted). “It’s all safety. It’s just a race. Safety is far more important.” A few canoes completed the trip to the marina, with Jaden Dinney of the Waverley Warriors the first to hit land and ring the bell. That was all for naught as organizers had switched

Our first goal is to get some results in shape so we can close off this year. ❞Rick Gibson the official finish line to a tent by the rhodo garden at the Courtenay Air Park. The road bikers handed the armband to the canoeists, who sprinted the final few metres.

The problem was congestion at the finish point. “Teams were coming through that weren’t racing, but bibs were reported as crossing the finish line,” Gibson said. “I’m not sure

how we’re gonna solve it. We’ve had all kinds of problems in 33 years, but this is the first time we’ve had this one.” As for the injured cyclist, he is believed to be Stephan Price of the Tombstones. “I know he’s doing well,” said Gibson. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Cliffe Avenue by Sunwest RV, with ambulance and police attending.

“It was not our fault or responsibility in any way,” Gibson emphasized. Another road bike incident saw Banzai’s Don Gilmore go off course, correct his mistake, then be given the wrong directions by the marshal. Despite that, Banzai still had the lead going into the canoe, but again all for naught as the team was disqualified for going off course. “It was a very tough call,” said Gibson. “He missed the corner due to the fact the marshal wasn’t there, which is unfortunate. “But the reality is if they’d been on the course in the first place they would have followed the route.” Another first were complaints from competitors. “We had two or three teams very angry, which we’ve never had before. They felt they didn’t get what they paid for, a snow to surf race. And they felt for the price they paid they should have had all their legs and have their results automatically. We can only do what we can do,” Gibson said. “I think overall everybody was very, very happy. We were trying to develop [a timing system] which had some insurmountable challenges that we don’t even know yet what caused the problem. Our first goal is to get some results in shape so we can close off this year.” When finalized, results will be posted at snowtosurf.com

Betties get roller derby season rolling The Brick House Betties got the local roller derby season rolling Saturday, April 18 at the Comox Valley Sports Centre with a doubleheader. Two junior derby teams made up of skaters under age 18 played the first game. The local Stone Cold Stellas were defeated by Nanaimo’s Candy Crushers 397-175. “I love the hard work the kids bring to practice all year,” said coach Wright Krazy, also a Betties skater. Hosts Brick House Betties took on Campbell River’s Rink

Minx Roller Girls in the headliner event. These local teams last met on the track almost two years ago. The score was within a few points for most of the first half, but the Minx pulled ahead in the second to win 217-138. “We were pumped to go head-tohead against the Betties again,” said Lita Riot of the Rink Minx. The Brick House Betties’ other home event this season is at the CVSC on Saturday, May 9 when they host Whistler’s Black Diamond Betties. A hard-fought game in Whistler last season saw the Brick House

Betties win 206-175. Tickets for May 9 will be available at the CVSC door (cash only): adults $7, youth (6-18) $5, kids 5 and under free. Doors open 6 p.m., game whistle at 7 p.m. Interested in volunteering, sponsoring the Betties, or trying out roller derby? The Brick House Betties invite you to get involved in this dynamic sport. Sandri, Angelo Vittorio (Victor)

June 18, 1931 – April 13, 2015 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Victor – husband, dad, nonno, brother, uncle and friend. Victor passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital on April 13th, 2015 at the age of 83.

Predeceased by his parents in Italy, Domenico (father) Angela (mother) and brothers Guiseppe and Severino. Victor is lovingly remembered and survived by Rina his wife of 52 years, three children, Steve, Marko and Lisa (Terry). Victor will also be deeply missed by his 4 grandchildren (whom he adored) Sienna, Andrea, Lucas, Ethan and three sisters, Dina, Maria, Amelia and many nieces and nephews in Italy. He will also be greatly missed by his beloved dog and companion, Taffy, whom spent most days at his side. Victor was born June 18, 1931 in Rosà, Vicenza, Italy. He immigrated to Canada in 1956 and lived in Cumberland since then. In his early years, he worked in mining, logging, and construction. He was a hard working individual and employed by Tayco Paving for over 25 years, until he retired in 1995. Victor’s last wishes were to be cremated and requested no funeral service. Flowers are gratefully declined. The family would welcome donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. We little knew that morning God was to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, You did not go alone. For part of us went with you The day God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, Your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again. To Our Nonno (Grandpa) The love we have for Nonno Will never fade away. We’ll think of him, our special friend Throughout each passing day, We’ll walk into the room And see his empty chair; Although we know he’s resting, We’ll feel his presence there. The memories of his laughter, His warm and loving smile, His eyes so full of happiness, His heart that of a child. Memories are forever Be they laughter or of tears, Memories we will treasure Through all the forthcoming years.

France Galletta

January 16, 1951 ~ April 7, 2015 When a life is well lived, it leaves a mark, and plants a seed that grows and thrives long after. France lived such a life, beautiful and full. This part of her journey ended on April 7, 2015 after a short but courageous battle with cancer. France was born January 16, 1951 to Joseph and Madeleine Galletta in Montreal, Quebec. She moved to Ottawa when she was 17 to live with her sister Danielle. In 1977 she moved to Victoria, BC, where she met her husband Ed Hancock in September of 1978, and married him less than 3 months later. She is predeceased by her parents, her in laws Edwin “Red” and Margaret “Peggy” Hancock, her sister Danielle, and her brother Carl. She is survived by her husband, her son Jonathon (Crystal), daughter Natalie, sister Michelle, brother Mario, brothers in-law Tony and Gerrit, her best friends Janet and Marvin, her nieces that were like her sisters Dawn (Joe), Ann (Doug), Theresa (Phil), and Bridget, 13 nieces and nephews, countless great nieces and nephews, and a grandbaby on the way. Mom tended her family like she did her garden, with care, patience and love. She loved to laugh and smile. Always caring for everyone, she loved to cook and bake. To her Walmart family, she was eternally grateful for all the support and love over the past 11 years. France touched many people with her selflessness, her humour, and her ever present glowing smile. She is incredibly well loved, and her life will be carried on in our hearts forever. A celebration of France’s life will be held in her backyard on Saturday, May 16th from 2-7pm at 1467 Burgess Rd Courtenay. Donations in her name can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

See a swarm? Call the CV Bee Club

Here in the Comox Valley, every year at this time, many small-scale beekeepers are looking to prevent swarms. For those people who are fortunate enough to have a small-scale beekeeper in your neighbourhood, you may be treated to one of mother nature’s most amazing spectacles; a tornado of bees swirling and circling around the queen while their scouts look for a new home. Honey bee swarms are not dangerous and honey bees in general are not aggressive. A swarm is the bees’ natural inclination to populate a new hive in a new location (beekeepers try to prevent this because those bees are valuable foragers for the nectar flow and ultimate honey crop). Before the bees decide to leave their hive with the old queen and look for a new home, they fill up their stomachs with honey and nectar, which they will need to build honeycomb for the queen to start laying. With their abdomens distended and full of honey and their task at hand to find a new home, they are even less likely to be able or inclined to sting. So if you are fortunate enough to see a swarm, enjoy the spectacle without fear and if one lands near where you live or you see one on a tree branch or building, please call any one of our 12 ‘Swarm Catchers’ in the Comox Valley Beekeeping Club at bit.ly/1PdQmlX Beekeepers will always be happy to come and hive a swarm. Swarms are a valuable resource and local beekeepers work hard to help them survive against all the odds they face these days.

In 2014 the government proclaimed June as BC Seafood Month; no better month to do so thanks to June also being the month of the ninth annual BC Shellfish and Seafood Festival, June 12-21, which has become B.C.’s largest of its kind. New for 2015, the BC Seafood Expo and Workshop Series (June 13-14) boasts sessions from 30-plus leaders in the fields of aquaculture research and development, companies and government representatives working in seafood export and trade, as well as innovation and knowledge mobilization institutions. Topics include: • Exploring the Business of Closed-Containment Aquaculture • Seven billion people are coming to dinner; Feeding the World vs. Fisheries • How to Get Your Product from Here to There; Cross Border Trade and Distribution Channels to Grow Business • The Changing Tide; How the Seafood Industry is Adapting to Ocean Acidification

Dr. John Nightingale, CEO, Vancouver Aquarium has been announced as the keynote speaker for the BC Seafood Expo and Workshop Series, June 13-14. • Wild Fisheries Trends, Challenges and Opportunities • European Trade Policies and Seafood Business Opportunities The speakers list is impressive, with executive directors, PhDs, scientists, economists

and educators from a range of organizations. The framework takes a page from the Seafood Expo North American and others, and is designed to meet the needs of the West Coast seafood industry by providing the opportunity to increase expertise, while doing business with buyers, industry innovators and leaders, suppliers, and international reps from throughout North America and Europe. The event has been developed by Comox Valley Economic Development, together with industry, in recognition of the importance of the seafood sector to B.C. coastal communities and their regional economies. Expo registration includes five workshops, keynote luncheon with Dr. John Nightingale, CEO Vancouver Aquarium, a trade show, coupled with the Flying Lobster Extravaganza and Expo Opening Reception at the Old House Hotel and Spa, and B.C. Coastal Community Mayors Breakfast. Registration details are at bcseafoodexpo.com
