School District 51 trustees were able to come up with a budget for 2015-16 after consulting with staff from all district schools. Board chair Teresa Rezansoff said that the process to reach the budget went very well. The budget for next year was approved at the regular board meeting on June 9 at the board office in Grand Forks. “It comes into effect on July 1,” said Rezansoff. “It was a great budget process this year. We did something a bit different. We always do consultations, that’s par for the course. These year we went out with three targeted questions.” Rezansoff said the board linked the budget process to the board’s goals with their achievement contact and educational directions. “We are linking the learning needs of the students to the direction we take in the school district and how the decisions we make in the budget supports all of that—so there’s clear alignment,”

she said. “It’s critical that when we make our budget decisions if we see there’s a need for extra teachers, extra education assistants, professional development or whatever it is—it’s driven by the needs of our students.” Rezansoff said the board has consulted with staff from every school and also had public consultation meetings at both ends of the district. “We asked those same questions at every meeting and we used all of that to steer the direction and make decisions on the budget process,” she said. “We were really pleased with it.” Rezansoff said the board feels positive about all the decisions they had to make. “We were really able to provide full support for all our schools,” she said. “We’re doing a lot of hiring this year. We have a big number of retirements. There will be a lot of new faces at our schools next year.” Rezansoff said the board had to take money from their contingency fund ($708,130) to balance the budget but emphasizes that there is enough

Grand Forks City Council is giving citizens who have concerns about water meters until June 25 to put their thoughts in writing. Staff will collect feedback and prepare a report for council for consideration at the July 20th Committee of the Whole meeting. Feedback from city water utility customers, which must be under 500 words, will be accepted until 4 p.m. on June 25 by email, mail or hand delivered. Email info@grandforks.ca; mail to Box 220, Grand Forks, B.C., V0H1H0; or, hand deliver to 7217 4th Street, Grand Forks. The subject line for feedback letters much read “Universal Water Meters – Next Steps: Public Consultation.” Council made the decision to ask for further input following a presentation by a group of residents at the Committee of the Whole meeting on Monday. Beverley Tripp and Karin Bagn were the group’s spokespersons. The city’s lawyers had advised council that Mayor Frank Konrad and Councillor Julia Butler were in an indirect and direct conflict of interest, respectively; the mayor did leave council chambers during the water meter discussion. Konrad stated that his recusing himself was not an admission of guilt. “There is no conflict of interest; there never was,” he declared, “furthermore, for the record this action obstructs my ability to perform my elected duties as mayor for the citizens of Grand Forks.” Butler did not recuse herself. Tripp spoke, saying she was chosen to read highlights from a 264-page water meter manifesto “on behalf of its many contributors.” Tripp summed up the key points of the manifesto, including RF radiation concerns, non-compliance with the B.C. plumbing code and insurance liability. After the presentation, Tripp asked council for a one-year “cooling off period” on the water meter installation. Council accepted the report as information. Also on the agenda was a report from consulting firm Urban Systems on water meter options. Anyone wishing to view that report, entitled Universal Water Meters – Next Steps, can view it on the city’s website at grandforks.ca.

Tourism association outlines new strategy CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

Tourism representatives from throughout the Boundary met with the president of the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Assocation (TOTA) on June 10 at the Christina Lake Welcome Centre to discuss several key initiatives. The meeting was put on by TOTA along with the Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce. TOTA partners participating in the meeting were Community Futures Boundary, Christina Lake Welcome Centre, Christina Lake Accommodation Group, Grand Forks Visitor Centre and Greenwood Visitor Centre. Sandy Mark of the Christina Gateway Community Development Association said it was great to be able to host the meeting in Christina Lake, especially considering it is “mile 0” for TOTA, which covers the Boundary and the Okanagan all the way up to Kamloops. Glenn Mandziuk, the CEO and president of TOTA, and his team brought their vision “Embracing Our Potential” to Christina Lake (and Midway earlier in the day) as part of their tour to insure that everyone is aware of their new strategy. “Their aim is to reach out to all the corners of this magnificent region and mobilize opportunities and experiences that will build wealth through focused

tourism strategies now possible through the graces of social media,” said Mark. “Glenn and his team were pleased to see the work that Christina Lake is leading to create a Boundary Destination Management Organization as they prove that working together makes it possible for everyone to win.” Mark said that the TOTA representatives were very impressed with the Christina Lake Trails project, which featured a group of people mapping out local trails to create a new trails map and website (cltrails.com) as well as other tools for making trail exploration easier. “The Christina Lake Trails project impressed them as one of their goals is to work with the Trans Canada Trail as a key platform for ‘tourism product’ development and marketing,” said Mark. “Members of the Christina Lake Tourism Society were encouraged to hear of the plans, particularly to focus marketing in Washington State and Calgary—since people from these areas are close at hand physically but may never have heard of the beauty of Boundary Country and all of the experiences that can be offered here.” Also discussed at the meeting were topics such as different ways to work more effectively with TOTA; TOTA’s new industry advisory committees; and creating a sustainability charter for tourism in the region.

James Mandziuk, president and CEO of TOTA, gives a presentation as part of the Growing Tourism Together tour at Christina Lake’s Welcome Centre on June 10.

Kelowna youth steal vehicle POLICE BRIEFS

By Craig Lindsay

Theft of vehicle On June 1 at 3:22 a.m. police responded to a theft of a vehicle on 25th Street. “The vehicle was parked in a driveway where two young offenders were witnessed driving off in the vehicle,” said Cpl. Richard Lanz of the Grand Forks RCMP detachment. “At this time charges are being submitted against the two young offenders.” The young offenders are from Kelowna. Shoplifter at Overwaitea On June 3 at 8:34 a.m. RCMP received a call about a shoplifter at Overwaitea Foods in Grand Forks who had just left the store with some meat. “Employees at the store witnessed the theft and followed the male outside where the male took off running,” said Lanz. “The male has been identified as a local male aged 55.” Dirt bike rider stopped On June 5 at 12:37 p.m. police observed a male riding an uninsured dirt bike on 68th Avenue and Second Street in Grand Forks. “Police stopped the male and a violation ticket was issued for no valid insurance, not wearing a helmet and not having a valid driver’s licence,” said Lanz. “The male was also served with an indefinite suspension from driving as requested by

the motor vehicle branch.” The male is a 44-year-old Grand Forks resident. Déjà vu On June 8 police were investigating an allegation about an uninsured motorcyclist on 68th Avenue. “While the police were investigating the complaint, the suspect of that complaint approached the police driving another vehicle,” said Lanz. “As a result, the driver, who was prohibited from driving under the Motor Vehicle Act, was charged with driving while prohibited.” The driver was the same person as the brief above. Vehicle stopped and checked On June 9 at 10:15 p.m. a vehicle was stopped and checked by police on Central Avenue. “At this check it was determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol,” said Lanz. “A demand was read and a breath sample was taken using a roadside screening device.” The result of the test was a warn and the driver, a local 43-year-old male, was issued a three-day driving prohibition. Mischief On June 15 police received a report of mischief that occurred two days prior on East Lake Drive at Christina Lake. “Unknown person spray painted a residence’s roof and cedar siding with Grad 2015,” said Lanz.

Ready to take on the world

It was another wonderful graduation ceremony at Jack Goddard Memorial Arena for the Grand Forks Secondary grads. The grad class of 2015 came onto the floor in their caps and gowns and left in their finest suits and dresses ready to take on the world. For the grads this is a time to cherish and remember—a once in a lifetime experience that they will look back on with pride. It is the one of life’s biggest milestones. A ceremony to bid farewell to youth and childhood and hello to the “real world.” For parents (and grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, friends and others) it’s a time to look at their son or daughter with pride as they prepare for adulthood. This grad class has already shown themselves to be a cut above by showing their class and comportment throughout the years. For many, the next step will be college or university as they decide what to do in the future; some will travel and see the world before embarking on schooling; some will step right into the work force. One thing is certain, this group is prepared and can conquer any of the challenges facing them in the future.

We are living in the age of the electronics. We are interacting more and more through computers and phones than ever before. Face to face meetings and social real-life interactions are become more and more scarce. This is both troubling and exciting. Even when we do meet up and go for dinner or take a walk in the park, many of us are still continually checking our cell phones. I remember back when cell phones first became available. They were large bricks that wouldn’t even fit in a pocket. You needn’t a wheelbarrow just

to cart them around. Or so I remember. I recall my old university buddy Mark was the first one of our group to get a cell phone. We were out at a fine establishment in Victoria and he hauled out this strange looking Captain Kirk style flip up tricorderlooking device and placed it on the table. We all stared at it and wondered what it was and what it did? He never did get a call that night on his “mobile” phone but it sure looked cool. I was one of the late adopters you could say. It seemed an unnecessary expense back then (and probably still is). But eventually I relented and picked one up. Hey, what if I’m in an accident in the middle of the highway? Of course, the damn things still don’t work if you’re in the middle of the highway in

the middle of nowhere but hey at least I could throw it at a passing car to get someone’s attention, right? That first cell phone was a flip phone too. If I gripped it right I could flip it open just like a futuristic communicator from Star Trek. “Beam me up, Scotty!” I would say. That first phone only had one game, Snake. Where you would chase your tail and try not to get pinned in. It wasn’t exactly Skyrim but it was fun while you were waiting for your bus. At least for about five minutes until your battery died. There was no Internet on that phone; or video; or music; or camera; or GPS. The only way you could text was by using the T9 method where you have to press a button three or four times to get the right letter. If

Opinion to the editor

Check out our complete selection on

Those of us concerned about the commodification of water by private interests and multinational corporations are grateful for the leadership shown by council in passing these two resolutions with unanimous support. In the face of changing weather patterns, low snowpack and low water levels in our rivers, we all need to ramp up our efforts to become responsible stewards of our watershed. Future generations and wildlife are depending on us to do so. Margaret Steele, Grand Forks

Canadian ground moved last week

Editor, The Gazette: The Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling legalizing cannabinoid medicinals/ derivatives is a huge step forward for the cannabis industry. And a signal, I believe, to the industry that as their products become more tolerated by society generally, the industry itself has some house-cleaning to do. Driven underground by sweeping criminalization, that industry is endowed with a burdensome reputation partly also self-inflicted. I regard the ruling as opportunity. Such opportunity is buoyed by last week’s CBC Radio One report reminding listeners that local marijuana production has been a lucrative subeconomy for more than half a century which suggests to me that legalized, the industry—every step from growers to consumers—has a legitimate role to play in lawful economic development. I’ve a personal problem writing this because I had never even seen a marijuana plant until four years ago—I was seventy-two at the time—and my only other experiences with it are of teaching pathetic young people, who had been ravaged by it, to regain their

self-esteem, higher measures of physical capability and social readjustment. The industry will aid my personal development when, a) robust scientific evidence of the benefits of medicinal marijuana is irrefutable, like Aspirin, and, b) the general public has full knowledge of the business entities that grow, refine, package, market and retail the end products and c) such business entities are fully accredited and conform with standard business practices. Progressive operators already have these things in hand, I’m sure. An amnesty, anyone? Headway must be forged by the industry itself because having been illegal, though lucratively productive, it has historical impediments to overcome primarily that of pariah status. It’s likely that the “dispensary” end of the business chain will gain acceptance most quickly, while growers and chemists have the longest rows to hoe. It will take time but the whole industry stands to gain, as does the broader community. We might even discuss “economic development” with a cannabinoid industry as a busy cog in the works.

It’s likely the most lucrative industry around; it must be brought on board. Perhaps we’ll even become a recognized industry leader offering bona fide courses, seminars and workshops— perhaps even a school; we’ve got to do something with Broadacres and Hardy View. Anything but those awful outdoor rock concerts. Canadian ground moved twice last week. Firstly, when the TRC released its findings and found Indian Residential Schools culpable of cultural genocide and we were all obliged to ask, “What sort of country is this?” And then came the Supreme Court ruling on cannabis and we asked again. Both events present Canadians with new opportunities and new challenges that beg solutions. Whither now? again… We have much to do and it’s time to be honest with each other. Years ago I told pot-blasted kids, “Don’t repeat mistakes; use bad experiences from them to remodel your futures.” It’s time to trade in the old model— it just doesn’t cut it anymore. Dave Milton, Grand Forks

Five city councillors should resign

Editor, The Gazette: City council gets what they call a strong vote of non-confidence from me. They (five of them) should resign. They are up to something sneaky (in camera) that is making me really angry. Attacking Councilor Butler for conflict of interest is dumb, and a huge waste of our tax dollars and everyone’s time. Julia was no way making money

from anything to do with water meters. How can they even claim she did? What seems to be going on is these five have agreed to stick together, come hell or high water, on some issues that they want to see go forward for some reason. This seems to be the same strategy from our old city council. It does work, cause if they all stick together, what is there that we can do about it,

no matter how ridiculous things get? Why would someone push so hard to get water meters installed, against public outcry? There were better solutions to the problem. It really makes you wonder: is someone local making money from the Grand Forks water meter program? There were about 175 people at

have effective and engaged non-profit organizations like the Granby Wilderness Society and the Christina Lake Stewardship Society working hard to protect our lakes and rivers and restore damaged riparian areas. We have a local council deeply opposed to commodifying water as evidenced by their recent resolution against the commodification or privatization of Grand Forks water. This strong policy statement was followed up with a second resolution banning the purchase of bottled water in singleserving bottles by the City of Grand Forks.

Editor, The Gazette: Hearing the news this morning about low water levels in Arrow Lakes and possible drought conditions in the Fraser Valley reminded me again how fortunate we are to live in Grand Forks. Not just because we have two beautiful rivers flowing through our valleys but because we are deeply committed to protecting our watershed. Thanks to the hard work of citizens, experts, stakeholders and local politicians, we have our own Kettle River Watershed Management Plan based upon solid knowledge of hydrology and water cycles in our area. Butler and Konrad wise and honest Editor, The Gazette: I have attended Friday’s meeting [June 5] at City Hall, where around 200 people were getting together to show their support for Councilor Julia Butler in her fight for the truth. It is shocking that the council of this city can do something like this to Councilor Butler and Mayor Konrad, accusing them about some kind of a conflict of interest. What kind of a conflict of interest regarding smart water meters might have Julia Butler, a single mother? It is understandable that the process of removing Councilor Butler is a serious matter—maybe the council should present openly and show us where the direct interest conflict is, and what kind of a conflict is that? Because as a simple resident I do not have a clue what kind of a conflict can have Councilor Butler. As far as I know, Councilor Butler and Mayor Konrad were not against the water metering, but against smart water meters and the radiation danger they create. Looks like they realize what smart

meters are. Like many professionals say, including Jerry Flynn. These meters (hydro, water, gas) are nothing else, only a weapon installed on every house by utility companies, applauded by provincial and federal governments. Many municipalities are against that, but utility companies and the government do not care about that. Recently the government of Saskatchewan was having some kind of a conscience wake up, and decided to remove all installed smart meters because for them the well being of residents of Saskatchewan is more important than a questionable technology. The real danger of these meters is a wireless mesh network. They communicate with each other and with the utility all the time. These devices are very powerful, they send their impulses up to five kilometres. The constant radiation they emit penetrates everything and everyone all the time. Like Mr. Jerry Flynn said; “It is a perfect weapon, it is silent, does not smell, and does its job 24 hours a day”. It is not a complicated issue to make

has flipped to the other side and is going against us? Why would he do that? How are we supposed to trust this council? The last paper had a letter that said council “had no choice but to begin the process to remove her from office.” What a load of hogwash. The meeting was secret, in camera, so how could Mr.

these devices safe—just remove the radio, antenna, and wire them, like it was done in Italy for example. In addition the hydro smart meters can communicate even without the wire, using the power line. Some time ago I was thinking that this town is lucky, and will stay away from these weapons, but the previous council has decided the opposite, and started to install these meters to make sure this town won’t stay away from these devices. By the way, as far as I know, some previous councilors are in the present council also, maybe they should be asked some questions. I am thankful that among us, we have honest and wise people like Councilor Butler and Mayor Konrad, who are able to see things others are blind to. As for the council members who decided to boot out Julia Butler, it would be fair to pay for all that process from their own wallets instead of reaching to somebody else. Anatol Plasun, Grand Forks

Elliott even know the issues? Talk about blind faith. There is no higher authority looking over council’s shoulders to make sure they are even playing by the rules. He sure is somehow trusting of a council that ignores public input, supports a stupid $1.3 million water meter program, agreed to let Mr. Allin keep a $192,000 severance, wasted $175,000 on a gravel pit repair, $10,000 on a deer study, $7,000 on a recent water meter study, etc. Yeah, we’re made of money over here in Grand Forks. No question about it—non-confidence vote on the five councilors. Don Lea, Grand Forks

Salmon reintroduction efforts focus of session to the Grand Forks Gazette

An information session open to the community next week is an opportunity to give an update on salmon reintroduction efforts by the Upper Columbia United Tribes. The session will be held Monday, June 22 at 7 p.m. at the GEM Theatre. A short video, Treaty Talks, will be featured. It documents people’s connections to the Columbia River. A question and answer session will follow. All are welcome, especially those who care about the river. Grand Forks is only one of several locations where sessions are being featured; in some communities (Bridgeport and Kettle Falls, WA, as well as Castlegar), salmon ceremonies will also be held. The sacred salmon ceremony lasts less than an hour, and is followed by a meal and traditional Indian giveaway. Upper Columbia United Tribes explained in a press release: Kettle Falls was an important salmon fishing site on the Columbia River, and a place of great sustenance for indigenous people: Sinixt (Arrow Lakes) People, Okanagans, Flatheads, Spokanes, Kalispels, Coeur d’Alenes, Sanpoils, Wenatchis, Entiats, interior Salish-speaking people, and other indigenous peoples. They called this sacred place around the falls “san-ate-koo” meaning “deep-sounding waters.” Grand Coulee dam built by the United States with the approval of Canada blocked the return of salmon and permanently flooded Kettle Falls and with it the beloved and vital migratory runs of salmon. In June 1940, an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 people mourned the falls at a “Ceremony of Tears”

This year the ancient ceremony takes on growing importance. In May, the U.S. State Department announced that modernizing the Columbia River Treaty and adding Ecosystem Function as a primary treaty purpose is a priority for the United States. Ecosystem Function opens the door to restoring salmon to the Upper Columbia region, and other waters in the Basin now blocked by dams. Tribal people continue to pray for their place, their river, their fishery. The salmon ceremonies are hosted by the Colville Confederated Tribes, Okanagan Nation Alliance, Upper Columbia United Tribes and the Inchelium Language and Culture Association.

Outdoor learning is known to reduce stress, increase health, and increase motivation. The school has been looking for ways to increase the connection of students to the outdoors and to enhance its environmental curriculum. As a key community institution, the elementary school will

be able to offer a competitive edge to its community promotion. The new space will also be available for community use outside of school hours. “This will showcase our school to families with remote workers looking for a home base,” says Sheldon Wiegel, president of the CLES PAC. “There’s no reason why they shouldn’t choose to live in Christina Lake given the safe neighbourhoods and quality education.”

School trustees hear about enhanced learning program

At the School District 51 board meeting on June 9 in Grand Forks, trustees heard about plans for the Enhanced Student Learning program. The Framework for Enhancing Student Learning is a project that has involved the Ministry of Education as well as the B.C. School Trustees Association (BCSTA) and other provincial partners. The new framework comes into effect July 1 and will replace the existing legislative requirements such as achievement contracts, superintendents reports on student achievement, district literacy plans, superintendents of achievement

and school planning councils. “The province has an accountability framework that has been in place for a number of years,” said Teresa Rezansoff, SD51 board chair. “There has been consultation over the last year on a new accountability framework and we’ve renamed it.” Rezansoff has worked on the framework herself as president of the BCSTA and said the project has gone very well. “It’s taking a new look at the accountability framework,” she said. “Every year the superintendents have to do an achievement contract and different compliance things that school districts have to do. So it’s looking at turning that upside down and really putting the focus

on students and our accountability to them as educators and governors of the school system.” During the board’s talking break at the meeting, trustees and others present discussed the Framework for Enhancing Student Learning. “We had a conversation with the people who were there aside from the board as a group,” said Rezansoff. “We talked about the elements of it and what is favourable. We see it as very positive— moving away from a bunch of reports just for the sake of putting together reports and focusing on the individual student in a really big way and ensuring that everything we do goes back to the individual student.”

Thumbs up to two gentlemen z Thumbs Up

I’m 87 years old…thumbs up for two genuine gentlemen. After locking myself out of my home, a young paper boy helped me to the apartment manager’s home just down the street (the paper boy was such a dear). Then the manager walked he home, helped me in, brought me water and stayed with me for a while to make sure I was alright. Two terrific fellows: one is young, one is older. Two thumbs up. And P.S., a big thanks to “Santa,” for always he keeps my driveway clean! One more thumbs up. The Boundary Multi 4-H Club would like to thank RDKB Directors Grace MacGregor of Area C and Roly Russell of Area D; Nyla Burrows of CIBC, and the Boundary Dog Sled Association for supporting our club. A big thumbs up to Leonard at the Grand Forks landfill for getting my truck started when the battery died. Very much appreciated.

Street show coming to market SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

International street performer Tianna the Traveller will be performing at the Grand Forks Farmers’ Market on June 19. The show is 20-30 minutes and will include death-defying stunts, jokes, and stories. Tianna will perform several times during the day. In lieu of admission, donations will be accepted at the end of the show. Patrons are encouraged

to come early and enjoy the market atmosphere while waiting for the show to begin. Originally from Revelstoke, B.C., Tianna is spending June touring the Okanagan and Kootenays. Of her reasons for the tour Tianna explained, “Growing up in Revelstoke I was always thrilled when a visiting performance came to town. It was exciting. Now I have the opportunity to bring that inspiration and wonder back to small communities like mine.” After completing her B.C. tour Tianna will be performing across Canada before

heading to Scotland, Austria, and Spain. Off stage Tianna is Miranda Allen. Allen is a classically trained actor who has performed in theatres across Canada and in Sydney, Australia. Now living in Edmonton, Alberta, she acts in live theatre and performs internationally with her street show and circus characters. She comes home to B.C. whenever she can to catch up with family, ski and enjoy the natural beauty. For more information on Allen or Tianna the Traveller visit mirandaallen.ca.

Originally from northern New Brunswick, Suzanne Leclerc sings catchy traditional songs from her Acadian and Québécois roots as well as some of her recent compositions. From touching ballads to humorous tales to tonguetwisting mouth music, there is always a hook! In addition to her vocals and upbeat French-Canadian foot percussion, Suzanne will play harmonica, jaws harp, bodhrán, doumbek, and spoons. Bryn Wilkin brings various stringed instruments to life; fiddle for energetic French-Canadian, Celtic and Métis tunes, tenor banjo for that old time ‘20s dance hall sound and multi-oud for original arrangements of songs and bal-

lads with hints of medieval. This concert is appropriate for all ages and will be a great family night out.

RDKB wants opinions about bridge A full third Survey assesses feasibility The Christina Lake Parks and Recreation Commission is encouraging the residents of Christina Lake to take part in an online survey between June 1 and Aug.1 in support of the future pedestrian bridge. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is assessing the feasibility of constructing a pedestrian bridge across Christina Creek in the community of Christina Lake. Currently, the only available crossing over Christina Creek is the Crowsnest Highway Bridge. It is the RDKB’s intent to provide a safer transportation corridor for pedestrians and cyclists over Christina Creek. If feasible, the proposed pedestrian bridge would provide an alternative route by spanning over the waterway between Kimura Road and Christina Road on the east and west stream banks respectively. The RDKB is very interested in ob-

taining feedback from you and the rest of the Christina Lake community about the possibility of a pedestrian bridge. Please take six GRAND FORKS minutes to complete RECREATION the following 13-question survey. Please note this survey is 100 per cent anonymous and the results will be available at a community open house in August. Thank you for your participation! Visit ttps://surveyplanet.com or go to the regional district’s website, rdkb.com.

GERRY FOSTER

For the Grand Forks Gazette

The phone rang at the Grand Forks International office in late May of 2001. The caller was from Los Angeles and he was inquiring about the upcoming baseball tournament. Specifically his question involved a team from China. “They want to come to your event this year,” he blurted out. I was a little stunned and frankly thought it was a hoax. I asked for more information which he subsequently faxed. It took me a day to come to grips with this dramatic development. Once things were verified, the negotiations and planning began with a sense of urgency. Sixteen teams were already confirmed, so what to do? Lewis-Clark State College was coming with two teams and graciously agreed to participate as one unit. Meanwhile the tournament program would soon be going to print, time was of the essence. Of immediate concern was working with the Canadian embassy in Beijing to make sure this could happen. Arrangements needed to be fast tracked but the prospects of hosting the Tianjin City Lions, the number one team in China and the first city in that vast country to be interested in the sport, provided all the incentive needed to work through the numerous details. Their desire was to come to North America and play a series of games against good competition. They would participate at the GFI and then play a number of college teams in California. Now this was quite remarkable. Their North American contact, Mr. Sung, an agent for American professional ballplayers who were interested in playing in Japan, Taiwan and South Korea, was organizing the trip for Team China. He was aware of the GFI being an outstanding and highly competitive tournament, which says volumes about the widespread, first-rate reputation of this premiere Canadian event. I will never forget the day Tianjin City Lions arrived in Grand Forks. It was a beautiful sunny Saturday, three days before the opening game. I met the team at their motel and took them to a local restaurant for dinner. We walked the several blocks and it was a sight to behold. They were impeccably dressed, all wearing eye-catch-

ing team jackets. At breakfast Sunday morning, a problem surfaced and it wasn’t bad coffee! The head of the delegation thrust a copy of the GFI official program in front of me. Immediately he pointed to the flags on the front cover, specifically the flags of China and Taiwan. This was most unacceptable to him. For 2½ hours we talked, relying on (and trusting) their interpreter. One of the bizarre questions asked of me was, “Are these programs in the Vancouver airport?” “How on earth would I know?” I responded. I was asked to prepare a written statement for the next day, requesting among other things, that the flags flying over the scoreboard at James Donaldson Park be removed, at least the flags of Taiwan and China. I remember thinking at the

time, “if only I had Henry Kissinger’s phone number, I’d call him!” High-stakes international diplomatic negotiations were far beyond my capabilities. That evening, at another motel, I welcomed the team from Taiwan, a country that had been coming to the GFI for several years. It was another sensitive meeting. Monday dawned with the usual last minute preparations to take care of; added to the list was that written declaration to present to Team China, appropriately at high noon! Meeting them at a practice field at Dick Bartlett Park, we exchanged our respective pacts. Apparently it did not meet with their approval. I issued an ultimatum! I said, “Take it or leave it. I expect you to be at the ballpark Tuesday to play Team Canada in the opening game.” I walked away, wondering if I had messed up. Tuesday morning, and the 2001 tourney was just hours

Piranhas Swim Club awarded silver and gold medals, respectively. Even our coaching staff were able to swim competitively with Nicole Nuyten receiving a bronze medal, David Hecht a silver, and Matt Grey a gold medal. Overall the meet was an

overwhelming success. Our main focus was to beat our previous personal bests from last season and every athlete was able to do so. As this was the first meet of the season, with seven teams in attendance, it was also a

away. At 6:30 p.m., I finished a scheduled TV interview and believe me, one eye was looking into the camera and the other watching for Team China’s bus. Fans were swarming into the stadium, an unusually large crowd for the opening night of this marvellous event. Team Canada had arrived. Would their opposition from across the Pacific appear? And suddenly there they were, but would they take the field? The head of the delegation presented me with gifts, smiled, shook my hand, and the players and coaches headed to their dugout. The rest of the week Tianjin City was a model of decorum. We played the tournament with only the Canadian flag flying in centre field. So what really was the problem? Many are not aware that in the Olympic Games and other international sporting events, a “replacement” flag is used for Taiwan as well as a different anthem. China (and others), refers to Taiwan as Chinese Taipei. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, a similar controversy erupted over the Taiwanese flag which in one incident was removed from the Regent Street Shopping district in London. Likewise one of the confrontations in Grand Forks (11 years earlier) involved the Team China officials requesting the downtown Home Hardware to get rid of the national flag of Taiwan which was flying outside their business along with the flags of the other participating countries. Ironically three of the coaches on the Tianjin City team had been hired from Taiwan’s professional leagues! Once it was confirmed that a team from China was coming, I anticipated there might be a problem regarding flags and anthems. I questioned the “agent” weeks before the tournament and he assured me this would be a non-issue. Obviously someone stood to lose a lot of money on this deal if it fell through. Use your imagination on this one! And for the record Tianjin City defeated Team Canada in the opener, 3-2, scoring the winning run on an error. They returned to China after their North American trip and the following year would win the inaugural championship of the China Professional Baseball League.

Music in the Park and has invited bands I was in to perform, and this year she decided to pass the torch over,” said Eburne Stoodley. “Because of my experience running sound, knowing the local musicians and performing at the event, she thought I would be a good choice.” Eburne Stoodley said the planning for this year’s Music in the Park has gone well. He said booking the bands in pretty straight forward but the hard part is making sure the performers have everything they need and ensure there is proper marketing. This will be the tenth year of the Music in the Park. “Rosemary Phillips started the Music in the Park and I joined her, supplying a sound system,” said Tetreault. “When Rosemary had to leave I took over and the rest is history.” Although she’s not running the show anymore, Tetreault did leave a solid line-up of performing acts for this year. The music starts on July 8 with local singer Laura Jean Cuthbert, followed by Castlegar’s That Girl and Earl a week later. The event wraps up on Aug. 26 with a performance from John Vere from Grand Forks. “People can expect good family entertainment,” said Eburne Stoodley. “Bring the kids and/or the grandkids out, just be sure to bring some lawn chairs or a blanket to lay on and sit back and enjoy the music!” The acts are from the Kootenays and Okanagan and include many home-grown Grand Forks performers. Throughout the two months of Music in the Park there is a variety of musical types sure to be please any music fan. “It’s nice to bring in a variety of music so the audience gets a nice ‘buffet’ and then we aren’t limited to bringing in performers of a certain style of music,” he said. The full line-up is: July 8: Laura Jean Cuthbert July 15: That Girl and Earl July 22: Good Enough For Dad July 29: John Vere Aug. 5: Gospel Night! Aug. 12: Borderline Swing Band Aug. 19: Vazzy Aug. 26: John Vere
