had us looking for our ruby slippers Like every other West Kootenay community, Castlegar was hit hard by Monday’s storm. Last week it was all hands on deck as city workers, Fortis employees, emergency response and local residents were all busy getting things back in order. Castlegar Mayor Lawrence Chernoff said he was overwhelmed by the response. “I would like to thank our emergency responders, city workers and Castlegar residents for their efforts and hard work during the city’s recent extreme wind and rain event,” said Mayor Lawrence Chernoff. “Within 30 minutes of the start of the storm, our fire department received over 40 emergency calls from our residents. The intensity of the storm was shocking and a number of houses and

vehicles were damaged by falling trees. In addition, our city’s electrical infrastructure was seriously damaged.” Trees, branches, power poles and lines were down all around Castlegar blocking roads, damaging houses and disrupting business. The worst damage occurred in the Kinnaird area. Not one, but three trees fell on the 4th Ave. home of Wally and Jean Borsa. First they heard a crash when the top of one tree blew off onto their roof. Moments later a fir tree came down followed by a large cedar. “We had just come in the house from being at the side, putting up the blinds. We just missed getting schmucked.” said Jean. The storm wreaked havoc all over the southern interior resulting in 10,000 customers losing power.

Top: Two of the three towering trees, measuring over 15 metres, in downtown Trail next to the Trail Community Health Centre were uprooted while the third had its topped snapped by the gusting winds, which reached over 70 kph. The trees held a prominent role in downtown and were always adorned with Christmas lights during the holiday season. Fortunately the trees fell between two building and left little damage. photos by Guy Bertrand Bottom left: Several picturesque trees in Nelson’s Lakeside Park were uprooted in last week’s windstorm. One insurance brokerage reported receiving 120 claims within a day of the storm, compared to a typical two or three per week. It took until Saturday for Nelson Hydro to fully restore power within its service area. Winds gusted up to 105 km/h at the storm’s height. Although trees were uprooted downtown or snapped in Gyro Park, there were little reports of damage to vehicles or buildings. It was a different story throughout various parts of Greater Trail. While some Genelle homes suffered exten-

sive damage, Warfield barely noticed any wind and Fruitvale dealt with some power outages due to downed power lines. Called a “gust front” by Ron Lakeman of the Castlegar weather office, local wind readings varied between 40kph to 70kph as the gust hit the Home of Champions around 6 p.m. City crews worked into the night and were out again Tuesday morning, ensuring streets were safe and no one was injured, said Andrea Jolly, Trail’s communications and events coordinator. Wind destroyed a number of large trees in Trail and left many, mostly fir and poplar, damaged but salvageable.

Jolly said two trees were downed at Gyro Park, three at the family statue on Victoria Street and two in McBride Street Park. Public works continued moving dangerous trees throughout the day and summer students and workers from Community Development Services were on site assisting with general clean up, she added. Power outages hit various parts of Trail. In Fruitvale, downed power lines forced Champion Lakes Golf Course to be closed on Canada Day. Meanwhile, the Birchbank golf course in Trail suffered “minimal” damage with two smaller trees and one large one uprooted. Power outages lasted almost 12 hours in

Salmo before it was restored Tuesday morning. “As for the trees, we still have a lot of cleanup to do as our contractors just did what they needed to do to make things safe as they had to do work in both Castlegar and Nelson who also got hit,” explained Larry Abenante, Public Works manager for the City of Trail. We are hoping that the contractors will be here in Trail this week and they probably have a week of work here in getting things cleaned up,” he added. “As for the trees that were topped, we will get our arborist to take a look and he will come up with a game plan for us.” Lakeman said gust fronts aren’t new to the region but perhaps came earlier than usual. “They (gust fronts) do come through on occasion, with one spot getting big wind, others look threatening as it passes though and nothing happens. The unique aspect of this one is that it did happen relatively early in the summer,” he said. “But then everything is happening early this summer.”

Seattle Studs rally to take GFI crown CRAIG LINDSEY West Kootenay Advertiser

The Seattle Studs captured the GFI championship on Sunday afternoon with an exciting 12-11 win over the Everett Merchants at James Donaldson Park. It was a savage outing for First baseman Connor Savage, who was named tournament MVP after his strong play all weekend. Savage hit three out of four at bats in the final and knocked in two RBIs. After the Studs went up 1-0 early, it was all Merchants as they went off for six runs in the third inning. Seattle then stormed back with a massive 10

run fifth inning. Seattle led 12-9 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Everett didn’t go away though as they scored two runs to come within one, but after Jake Levin struck out for the Merchants that was it and the Studs took the crown. In the semi-finals played earlier in the day, Everett knocked out the defending champion Burnaby Bulldogs 4-0, while Seattle got past the West Coast Guns 5-2. Both the Trail Orioles and the Grand Forks Blue lost all three games and finished last in their respective divisions and out of the money round. Trail lost to Everett, West Coast and North Sound, while GF lost to Northwest, Thurston Country and Parkland.

Boundary Museum and Interpretive Centre held the grand opening of its solar panel project on June 27. Caleb Schmidt of Sunfind Solar Products Inc. in Red Deer, AB gave a presentation on the project and answered questions ranging from the life span of the panels and batteries, to the costs of residential and commercial systems. The day featured hosting a lunch for the Rotary Club of Grand Forks and its visitors; volunteers also demonstrated bread-making, which usually happens on Thursdays. Bill Chiveldave manned the oven while Doreen Sorensen (left) and Irene Perepolkin prepared their best recipes and shared the finished loaves with onlookers. The museum uses a historic outdoor brick oven. The Pride of the Valley flour used is milled locally at the Grand Forks Doukhobor Heritage Hilling Society’s original 1915 location on Mill Road using nonGMO, regionally grown grain and applying the same technology they built over 100 years ago.

Place Names

Did Kinnaird come from Kinney, Kinnear, or Kinert? Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

One hundred and second in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Last week we began looking into the naming of Castlegar’s former twin town of Kinnaird. A popular theory says it was christened after the 11th Lord Kinnaird, but there is an alternate explanation. According to the Castlegar Historical Review, published in 1952, Kinnaird “is definitely named after some early settler of the locality. But conversation with several old-timers cannot reveal who he was.” According to notes in the BC Provincial

Archives place names file dated 1962, the CPR also indicated it was “after [an] early resident in vicinity” while the village clerk “Thinks [it was] named by CPR engineer after place in Scotland.” Leading Kinnaird citizen Ross MacDermid wrote in the Castlegar News of Sept. 28, 1967: “Don’t ask me when the district came to be called Kinnaird. Doubtless the CPR knows if someone could persuade head office to chase back in the records 50 or 60 years. The original group who worked in 1947 and 1948 [to incorporate the village] didn’t find out, although they did establish that it was named after a man named Kinnaird (and his name rhymed with laird and not lard) who had been a district superintendent. There was an argument over whether

he had been a superintendent or surveyor, and another over whether it was the CPR or the Columbia and Western railroad, but since these things didn’t really matter, the question was dropped.” MacDermid, the newspaper, Selkirk College, and the then-Town of Kinnaird weren’t able to unearth any more details “other than the fact Mr. Kinnaird apparently did live near the infant townsite.” The Canadian Permanent Committee of Geographical Names pointed to the Encyclopedia Canadiana, which agreed Kinnaird was named “After [an] early resident,” but neither source provided further details. The News added: “A check by the divisional engineer of the CPR revealed no employee with the name Kinnaird but con-

firmed there was a resident of that name. Neither the Kootenay land registers nor the provincial archives reveals any trace of a resident of this name … None of the old-timers living can remember anyone named Kinnaird, but it could have been a resident of Waterloo or Montgomery, as some of the social notes [in the Trail Creek News of 1897] did refer to a ‘Kinnear.’” The BC vital events index lists deaths and marriages of several people named Kinnaird, but none in West Kootenay. Neither the 1901 nor 1911 census lists anyone named Kinnaird in BC (although it finds a few Kinnards in Victoria). continued on page A17

Place Names continued from page A16

The late Eli Popoff wrote in the Castlegar News of Sept. 23, 1971: “The oldsters were not too sure just when this station came to be called Kinnaird, but do not remember it by that name when they arrived here [in 1909]. To the best of grandpa Eli Voykin’s recollection, the name Kinnaird was derived from the name of a railroad brakeman who lived there. His name was Kenny or Kinney and since his yard was bordering the railroad siding, it came about that any railroad cars spotted there were referred to as the ‘Kinny Yard’ and the townsite that developed was eventually registered Kinnaird.” CPR conductor Alfred Joseph Kinney (1874-1936) was listed as a Castlegar resident in 1904-05 — along with brakeman Frank Kinert (1860-1915). The latter may be highly significant: Kin-

ert is in fact a spelling variant of Kinnaird and the Kinert clan lived in the barony of Kinnaird. Other branches of Frank’s family used the spelling Kinard. Frank was born in Anamosa, Iowa, where his father David was a retailer, politician, court clerk, and county sheriff. As of 1886, Frank was working for Union Pacific out of Omaha. In 1891, he married Anna Smith and the following year they had a daughter, Beulah. The 1900 US census finds them in South Sumpter, Oregon, but by 1904 they appear to have gone their separate ways as Anna was running the National Hotel in Everett, Wash. In 1910, Frank turns up as a railway switchman in Lewiston, Montana. The following year, he was back in BC, living in Greenwood and working for the CPR. He died a few years later in Spokane of kidney inflammation and was interred in Glenwood Springs, Col., where his late

mother lived. But if he was responsible for Kinnaird’s name, how and why did it happen? At the time it was an obscure railway point, so perhaps his suggestion was met with a shrug and “Sure, why not?” Notably, a still-obscure railway point east of Creston was named Kinert by 1912, possibly after a section foreman from Fernie named Fred Kinert, whose relation to Frank, if any, is unknown. Another wrinkle: a 1916 map of Columbia River fruit lands held by the BC Archives shows “Waterloo (Kinaird)” [sic] and nearby “Annable Orchards.” The latter was named for George Malcolm (Mac) Annable (1858-1938), who also lent his name to the Warfield suburb. Lastly, the portion of Kinnaird now known as Woodland Park was originally called Stewartsville — which we’ll look at separately later in this series.
