Access denied? Stave West a fire risk Kevin Mills

MISSION RECORD

Access to the west shores of Stave Lake is going to be limited, if not banned outright, due to extreme fire risks. The District of Mission has decided to close access to the forestry road that leads up to Stave West – a 5,000-hectare area situated in northern Mission around the west side of Stave Lake.

Security will man a gate blocking the road in order to block access from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. A record will be kept of who goes in and out. “There is no need for people to be up there (overnight) other than industrial users, people at the Zajac Ranch or at the campground,” said Bob O’Neal, Mission’s director of forestry. “We currently have patrols on the week-

end and we started our security staffing as well. But we are still finding that we are having issues in the middle of the night up there.” Illegal bonfires, stolen cars, and gunfire are just some of the activities of concern ongoing in the area. O’Neal said security will be in place to man the gate by the weekend. However, the evening closure may be just the beginning.

“If conditions continue to get worse, then we’d ask for a full closure.” Provincial permission is needed to close the area altogether. He added it is likely a complete closure could come as soon as next week. If that occurs, only people going to the Zajac Ranch or the campground will be permitted to enter. Continued on 2

Extreme danger ‘Any little spark can take off’ From 1

O’Neal explained that the district is trying to prevent people taking stolen vehicles there or shooting off fireworks, which occurred last weekend. The fireworks were the biggest concern, due to the current, extreme fire hazard conditions “This is unprecedented the rating that we are in – we are off the scale,” said O’Neal. Marj Drysdale, information officer for the BC Wildfire Service, said the Fraser Valley area is currently at extreme risk of fire. “We really need people to understand that an extreme fire danger means that any little spark can take off.”

Recent fires: The hot dry weather has resulted in at least three fires in the Mission area in the past week. July 6 – A 0.09 hectare fire was reported

Flames could be seen rising above a home on Seventh Avenue in Mission on July 3. RICK BURFOOT PHOTO by Norrish Creek, three kilometres east of Norrish Creek Forest Service Road. A team of three firefighters were dispatched by helicopter and managed to douse the blaze before it grew. July 3 – A brush fire occurred at about noon in a vacant field on the southwest corner of Hurd Street and Seventh Avenue. Mission firefighters

arrived to see flames flickering above the rooftops of nearby homes. Crews managed to douse the fire before any property damage occurred. June 30 – A half-hectare brush fire on Sylvester Road, east of Stave Lake and close to Davis Lake Provincial Park, required 16 firefighters, two helicopters and an air tanker to get under control.

Dog pound closing?

of the Fraser Valley

Mission examines FVRD animal control program Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

Some dog owners are unhappy with Mission council’s decision to investigate a new animal control program. On Monday, council listened to a presentation on the Fraser Valley Regional District’s program that currently provides animal control service to both Abbotsford and Chilliwack. Services include all aspects of animal control including dog licensing, enforcement of regulations, management of the animal control facility, a pet adoption service and handling dangerous dogs. Stacey Barker, manager of environmental services at the FVRD told council the program would provide six-day-a-week coverage in the Mission area. Any dog that was impounded would be placed in the animal control officer’s air-conditioned van until the end of their shift. If the dog has a licence and the owner can be located, the animal will be returned that day. Any dogs whose owners cannot be found will be taken to the Chilliwack facility. “We are very proud of this program,” said Barker. “Our main focus is on dogs. We do not handle cats in this program, but we do deal with a variety of other animals when needed.” Mission’s current animal control contract with Sherry Taylor

Stacey Barker, FVRD’s manager of environmental services, explains the animal control program to Mission council. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO expires in early 2016. Taylor, along with four parttime staff, currently work out of the city-owned pound located on Woodward Street. According to a staff report, the facility is in need of repair and does “not meet the animal control standard of today.” If council decides to close the facility in favour of the FVRD, the land could be sold for about $400,000. Taylor was also at the meeting and told council that she had many concerns with the proposed new program. She said leaving an animal in a running van for hours at a time was not a healthy situ-

ation. There was also concern about owners having to travel to Chilliwack and paying higher fees for impoundments. The current system charges $8 per night to house dogs. The FVRD program costs $10 for the first night and $50 for subsequent nights. “The daycare fee of $50 per day becomes almost impossible for someone who gets paid on Friday but their dog gets impounded on Tuesday. It becomes almost impossible for them to reclaim their dog,” said Taylor. She also had concerns about job loss for her Mission employees. Several members of the public also spoke, asking council to keep animal services local. Council has not made a decision on the report, but has asked the FVRD to provide a full proposal at a later meeting. By the numbers: Mission currently sells about 6,000 dog licences a year, generating $205,000 in revenue. The current cost to operate animal services in Mission is $305,000. According to the staff report, switching to the FVRD system will save Mission $26,000 in the first year and $46,000 per year in subsequent years. That does not include the $10,000 that is currently spent on maintaining Mission’s pound facility.

Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

Heat records toppled on the weekend and high temperatures are expected to continue until at least the middle of July. Sunday saw highs of 36.3 Celsius in Abbotsford and 35.2 in Agassiz, according to information supplied by Environment Canada. The previous high records for July 5 were 32 Celsius in Agassiz, set in 1958, and 31.7 in Abbotsford set in 1975. As for Mission, meteorologist Lisa Coldwells said it is difficult to determine an “official” record high because Environment Canada has no weather station in Mission. “So somewhere in there (between Abbotsford and Agassiz) it was the same temperature in Mission. At least 35 Celsius,” said Coldwells. According to Accuweather.com, Mission hit 36 Celsius on Sunday, but that temperature is not official. “We have to think what are you closest too. You’re pretty close to Abbotsford and kind of close to Agassiz and in this case, both temperatures were relatively the same,” said

Five-year-old Azar Lockwood mans the water cannon at the Mission Leisure Centre Water Park last week. People are doing what they can to keep cool during the recent hot spell. BOB FRIESEN PHOTO Coldwells. Sunday also set the record for high minimum temperature. “Normally, your overnight low temperature is your minimum and we actually set records for being the highest temperature ever recorded overnight.” The overnight low of 17.8 Celsius in Abbotsford shattered the previous high minimum record of 15.2. On average, overnight lows in the Fraser Valley in July are about 13 degrees.

As people continue to search for ways to stay cool, Coldwells said there is little relief in sight. A cooling rain is unlikely any time soon. “We’ve had two very dry months and climatologically July is our driest month so we have that working against us.” She said a ridge of high pressure is still stuck over B.C., preventing a cool-down. “It’s very big. It’s very stubborn. It does not want to move.”

Good hearing but trouble with conversation? good solution for most people.

A lot of people have trouble catching what people say, especially in group situations, despite having good hearing. What a lot of people don’t know is that this may be caused by damage to the so-called motor or amplifier function of special cells in the ear. A new type of hearing aid can help balance this out. A great many people have difficulty hearing others clearly on a daily basis. Bad acoustics, unclear pronunciation, background noise and music often make it challenging to catch what people say. This results in them having to repeatedly ask questions, straining to hear and perhaps increasingly avoiding discussions in large groups. As mentioned earlier, this may be caused by malfunctions in special cells in the ear. According to a theory proposed by hearing researchers, “motor cells” are a type of hair cell responsible for amplifying quiet sounds. They vibrate up to 20,000 times per second. If these hair cells do not work properly then quiet sounds are no longer naturally

Rotary requests a refund Wants donation returned if observatory plans scrapped Kevin Mills MISSION RECORD

If the observatory project at Fraser River Heritage Park gets scrapped, then at least one local organization wants its money back. Mission’s Sunrise Rotary Club informed council on Monday night that it will request a refund of the $20,000 donation it made towards the observatory, if council decides to re-purpose the building. In April, it was announced that the district would end its maintenance agreement with the Mission Heritage Association to run Fraser River Heritage Park. As part of that announcement, the district asked that all fundraising for the partially constructed observatory be stopped until an independent study on the feasibility of the facility could be completed. Many volunteers and contributors are concerned that

Construction of a new observatory at Fraser River Heritage Park is on hold until council receives an independent report on the feasibility of KEVIN MILLS PHOTO the facility. the project may be abandoned. Louise Lacerte, past president of the Rotary club, spoke to council on Monday night to clarify her group’s position. “Our Rotary club, over a period of years, raised money to dedicate to a legacy project,” she said. After being presented with several choices, a committee

decided that the observatory “was a perfect fit.” She said the project provided a service to the community, and it involved partnerships with other community organizations, businesses, provincial and local governments. Also, it had the backing of Mission council. On March 8, 2014 the

project kicked off with a ground-breaking, and Rotary presented a cheque for 20,000. “Since that day, Rotary has continued to raise funds and garner support for the project. Our question now is, will the District of Mission support Rotary to complete the project?” asked Lacerte. “Or will you be refunding the $20,000 that was donated, specifically for that project?” Mission Mayor Randy Hawes told Lacerte that while the previous council did approve the project, “this is not the previous council.” He said no decision on the fate of the observatory will be made until the independent report is finished some time next month. After the meeting, Hawes said if a decision is made not to continue with the observatory, then he personally would support Rotary’s request.

Necessary precautions

To paraphrase Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz … water and power and fire, oh my! Unlike Dorothy’s fears of walking through the unknown and creepy forest, the fear of forest fires, of power outages and water shortages are only too real this summer for citizens of the Fraser Valley. Hot dry weather has the province raising a flag on water usage, B.C. Hydro expressing concern about power usage across the province and the Coastal Fire Centre declaring a total ban on campfires. Taken together, it all sounds a bit apocalyptic. But we haven’t reached the end of times just yet – these are necessary precautions being taken by those in positions of authority. Here in Mission, stage 3 sprinkling bans are in effect and council has decided to limit access to the Stave West area – all in an attempt to conserve water and prevent wildfires.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Are these measure inconvenient? Maybe a little. However, a few simple restrictions may prove to have a huge impact down the road. Perhaps it is time to take notice of these times, when our systems are being pressed to the limit and wonder what it might be like in years to come, when severe restrictions are placed on power and water as a routine measure. Are we ready to handle an extreme shortage for any serious length of time? Sure, conserving a few drops of water here and there might not seem like a lot, but those drops add up fast. And developing a conservationist attitude now, both as individuals and as a community, is the path to ensuring there will be resources available for our grandchildren.

Are you enjoying this hot weather? To answer, go to the home page of our website: www.missioncityrecord.com

LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Do you believe a ban on lawn watering will be enough to avoid a water shortage this summer? Here’s how you responded:

Outlook cloudy for climate policies Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau came to Vancouver last week to unveil his environmental platform for the Oct. 19 federal election. Trudeau promised an overhaul of the National Energy Board and a vaguely defined intention to work with provinces to impose a “price” on carbon dioxide emissions across the country. Trudeau’s media tour took him to the Burnaby facilities of General Fusion, where, like Premier Christy Clark a few weeks before, he stood at his podium before a prototype fusion reactor. This massive octopus of pistons and wires is an attempt to capture the nuclear reaction that powers the Sun and other stars, containing its fury within steel walls and magnetic fields. The old joke about controlled fusion is that every 20 years, scientists tell us it’s just 20 years away. If it ever is developed, such a process could quickly put an end

to our hand-wringing about fossil fuels, largely replacing them with endless, emission-free energy. This is the type of technological revolution that Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s officials indicated would be needed, after Canada announced a pledge with other G7 leaders to make their economies carbon-free by 2100. That’s right, some time within the next 85 years. Clark visited General Fusion in May to announce her new climate action advisory panel, which has to give her a plan to take to Paris next December. That’s the next big United Nations climate summit, where Trudeau hopes to lead a delegation of premiers to stop the flow of “fossil awards” given to Canada by people in polar bear suits. Asked about the fusion reactor she had just toured, Clark laughed off the question, comparing it to the “flux capacitor” used for time travel in the Michael J. Fox movie Back to the Future. Trudeau recently told university students that we need to change our concepts of time and space, and he didn’t seem to be kidding. The point here for voters is that all these leaders, Harper, Trudeau, Clark and many others, are talking down to you.

You aren’t sophisticated enough to understand this climate business. The Pope has weighed in, assuring us that carbon trading systems are not going to cut it. This is a rebuke to California, Quebec and the European Union, where effective

You aren’t sophisticated enough to understand this climate business. carbon trading is, like controlled fusion, just around the corner. Pope Francis warned that our “throwaway culture” views nature “solely as a source of profit and gain,” and so people won’t voluntarily do the right thing. (The results of the Metro Vancouver transit plebiscite could be interpreted this way, if you ignore the bumbling, waste and politi-

cal posturing that really did it in.) The Pope concludes that there is “an urgent need” for a “true world political authority” to impose order on the greedy capitalist humans that infest our beautiful planet. Presumably this would be run by the UN, so my advice is to start hoarding candles and cat food now. B.C.’s frozen carbon tax has ceased to have much effect, with gasoline consumption back up over 2008 levels amid the usual volatility of prices. Gasoline is going for around $1.30 a litre, despite the prolonged slump in crude oil prices, and people have basically forgotten about this tax on top of all the other gas taxes. Perhaps B.C. can brag in Paris about the Pacific Carbon Trust, which limps along after its near-death experience in 2013. The trust continues to divert tax dollars from B.C. government operations to purported carbon-saving activities, including paying coastal First Nations not to log the portions of forests that they demanded be preserved. Stop frivolous water use

Margot Goulding Mission

*** Water use rises 27 per cent – in a situation where water usage is already rising like the tempera-

ture without rain in the forecast. Why would a sprinkler ban be good enough? But you allow power washing of driveways and sidewalk, and continue to wash your cars? Where are the priorities of conservation? Our children would make the best of a bad situation and conserve now. Isn’t that what we teach them? Remove the pressure washing of driveways and sidewalks and washing cars. Lawn sprinkling is the best you can do? Families can go to the water park – the kids can play in the water without running the sprinkler at home on the lawn for hours (sort of a way to cheat at watering your lawn) right? Be water wise.

My concern is this: Why are relative luxuries like power washing, washing driveways and washing cars considered as important as watering gardens? If there is a strong concern we may get to stage 4 emergency-use-only restrictions this summer – and a Mission councillor tells me there is, and that stage 4 means not even food garden watering is allowed — then

Public discussion on parks

Why all the secrecy from Mission city council regarding goings on at Fraser River Heritage Park? Everything that council has moved forward on regarding taking over the park has been done in-camera. Why? The Mission Heritage Association believes in transparency, openness, public accountability and full disclosure. Mission council chooses to hold their deliberations in private, away from public scrutiny. When someone does something out of the

public eye, it’s often because they don’t want the public to know what they’re doing and why. Thus, I question, “What is it about Mission council taking over the operation of Fraser River Heritage Park that they don’t want the citizens of Mission to know?” We, the members of the board of the Fraser River Heritage Park suggest full disclosure…now. MISSION’S BUSINESS AREAS BLOOM As I await the arrival of an air conditioner repair person, I am glad to have this column to write, which distracts me from the continuing heat wave outside---and the growing humidity inside. Trooper, my usually active kitten, is limiting his movement to searching for the coolest piece of my apartment’s laminated flooring.

These esthetic changes are not limited to the downtown, about which I have already written. The Junction has an array of hanging baskets, and staff keeps its red and green hedging in mint condition. Beautification efforts are also evident at Mission Hills Plaza, Prospera Credit Union Mall and the Heritage Park Market Place. Some improvements are emerging at the Mission Best Western property.

Since moving to Mission in 1990, I have observed an increasing interest from Mission property and business owners in beautification of their premises, not only with floral displays but in their re-painting, landscaping and renovations. The most recent improvement (an attractive brown paint project) has appeared on the Pioneer Chrysler Jeep dealership on First Avenue. Owner Ray Van Empel also demonstrates his community pride by being active in the community and supporting a number of charities.

Concluding on another positive note, I am not dismayed by the potential toll this extended heat wave could have on our city’s landscapes. I spent the first 26 years of my life in the Manitoba climate’s extremes, and know that Mother Nature will take care of renewal.

A Mission man is using his experience and connections in the automobile repair and custom work industry to help raise funds for the Mission Youth House (MY House). Aaron Hiebert, owner of Ground Force Performance in Abbotsford, along with a long list of other Fraser Valley businesses, have created a modified Jeep for a raffle to support MY House. “We’ve built up this ’89 Jeep Cherokee. It started off as a stock Jeep but it has progressed significantly since then,” said

Hiebert While it is still being appraised, he believes the jeep is worth at least $18,000. Among the numerous modifications, Hiebert said the Jeep has been given a four-and-ahalf inch lift, 33-inch tires, a 9,500-lb. winch, custom-fabricated off-road bumpers, audio system, security system, fresh transmission, and the list goes on. “I’ve always wanted to build a cool Jeep,” Hiebert said. MY House is a place at-risk youth can go for meals, laundry and shower services. There are also adults available to listen and offer advice. The building is

owned by Mission Community Services Society. Hiebert heard the project was short of funding and looking for help, and decided to create the raffle. Tickets will be available starting next week at various automotive repair and custom shops in the area. The draw takes place in September. Hiebert said the Jeep is good for novice to light intermediate level off-road drivers. “It’s great for a weekend warrior and off-road adventures.” Visit facebook.com/missionyouthhouse for more information.

A new Mission-based project is trying to match patients with a family physician. Headquartered in the Mission Division of Family Practice office, the A GP for Me program creates a list of people who currently do not have a family doctor. As openings occur, the person is contacted and directed to a local physician. “This particular initiative is looking at helping patients find a GP and helping strengthen the bond between physicians and their patients,” said Dr. Carol Pomeroy, physician lead for the project. She said local doctors examined the needs of the community and looked at gaps in care. The medical clinic, located on Hurd Street in Mission, has been keeping a list of patients who they know do not have a regular doctor. Other offices in the area have also been keeping a list. “We will be calling people who do not have a family doctor to come in and meet with a doctor here,” said Shona Brown, executive director for the Mission Division of Family Practice. Once all of their information has been gathered, patients names will go on a list and as opening occur, they will be matched with a local physician. According to their research, more than 8,000 people in the Mission area do not have a family doctor. “Now some of those people might be people who actually don’t feel the need for a family physician or don’t want one. So a small percentage of those aren’t looking for one,” said Pomeroy. Once word of this program spreads, Brown feels the office will get a number of people phoning with the hopes they can be matched. Creating the list is one step, finding a physician with the ability to take on more patients is another. “We have a little bit of room in our practices and have been trying to fit people in but there are people we haven’t been able to help,” said Pomeroy. “There is a shortage of doctors across this country. It’s not Mission specific at all,” added Brown. For more on the program, call 604-820-1021 or visit divisionsbc.ca/mission.

Unfortunately, common courtesy isn’t all that common today. The importance of being polite is too often overlooked or forgotten in our hectic and harried lives. But, what is even worse, some people make a sport of ridiculing or berating others as evidenced by some of the popular game shows and “reality” shows which seem to celebrate and even glamorize the biting wit which humiliates. In some people’s hands, even the rules of etiquette can become a weapon to humiliate or ridicule others. Think of someone who disparages a dinner guest for simply using the wrong fork or for some other minor gaffe. This is contrary to, and misses the whole point of etiquette, which is to put others at ease and to make them feel comfortable, especially in situations where many may feel ill at ease. Social situations can indeed be very uncomfortable for many people, and we should do our best to make others feel at home. In the Bible, there are many wonderful examples of hospitality where people take others into their home and then serve them with great attentiveness. We would do well to emulate these ancient customs, lest the customs of hospitality become a quaint vestige of a more civilized and bygone past. When we invite someone into our home, we should always do our best to make them feel like an honored guest.

My lords, turn aside, I pray you, to your servant’s house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise up early and go on your way... and he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. R.S.V. Genesis 19:2-3

One block of First Avenue has new parallel parking lines as part of a four month project. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO

Parallel lines Parallel parking lines have now been painted along one block of First Avenue in downtown Mission. On Monday morning, drivers heading into town noticed the new parking lines. Council recently voted to have parallel parking lines painted on both sides of the main thoroughfare from Welton Street to James Street. The four-month project will be used to assess whether more cars can park on First Avenue when offered designated spaces.

Mission’s Preet Mangat is heading to Lakehead University in Ontario to begin his SHAD journey which starts by being fully immersed in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) based learning environment for the month of July. Mangat and other exceptional students accepted into SHAD are not your usual runof-the-mill high academic achievers. “SHAD empowers exceptional youth to make the world a better place,” said Barry Bisson, SHAD president. “SHAD is where Canada’s top youth achievers are exposed to great ideas, inspired to look at

Preet Mangat things differently, challenged to reach for the highest levels of excellence and encouraged to embrace their uncommon purpose – the pursuit of their

own potential to change the world.” Mangat is among only 658 youth offered a place to spend this July immersed in the rewards and rigors of higher learning at one of SHAD’s 12 host universities from coast to coast. SHAD is a registered Canadian charity that allows exceptional high school students to recognize their own capabilities and envision their potential. Each year, SHAD provides the opportunity for more than 600 students from across Canada and internationally to attend a month-long summer learning program.

Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is a diverse business hub that can connect you to various resources on the north side of the Fraser Valley. Business, tourism and community; we serve to build the prosperity of the businesses in this region. A lot of what we do at the Chamber is not well known in the community, even amongst our own members. There is so much happening on a daily basis that it can be hard to communicate everything to everyone. The top 3 questions that we get asked in the community are: “What does the Chamber do?” “How can the Chamber help my business? “Why should I join the Chamber?” We have come up with 25 ways to answer these questions. For our current members, many of these answers you may already know, but as our business members needs

evolve, we do our best to continue to meet your needs with new programs, services or resources. Many of which may be listed here! Most of all we welcome our members input into how we can serve you better. What programs, resources, services or support would you like to see from us? With so many different business needs, we try to meet as many as possible, but we need your input to. So I welcome you to contact us with your feedback, get involved in one of our many Chamber committees to have your voice heard and be part of the many great projects we work on within the community. Chose from our Tourism Committee, our Events Committee, our Government Affairs Committee or our Membership Committee. Each committee meets on a monthly basis, contact the Chamber to find out more!

Policy: Almost every program or activity in which the MRCC is involved was brought forward by a Chamber member. Members of the MRCC are surveyed for their ideas and suggestions that can be developed into the Chamber’s future programs. Volunteers: Once the programs are established, the necessary implementation is made possible only because the Chamber membership itself comprises a willing and talented pool of volunteers that is capable of getting the job done.

Randy Hawes DOM LIAISON

Funding: Not only do the members

come up with the ideas and suggestions for Chamber programs, and provide the volunteer labor to carry them out, they also pay for them. Member dues investments should be by far the Chamber’s largest source of operating capital – the one source of funding which the Chamber could not operate without. Where do your membership dues go? Have you ever wondered where the money you pay each year goes? Take a look at just some of the expenses that might be covered by your membership dues. In 2014, membership dues accounted for 19% of the operating revenue and membership events and expenses accounted for 13% of the expenses not including wages & benefits. We do our very best to utilize the membership fees provided to us to give you the best programs, events, services and resources available!

Mission, B.C. is certainly known for its arts community, but did you know it is home to technical artists, too? Take Carl Koehler and his company CRK Designs Inc., for instance. CRK Designs is a lighting consulting firm that “helps, guides and teaches” people to understand their lighting needs so they save energy, money and improve safety, says Koehler. While there is plenty of science and technology behind the lighting configurations Koehler designs, there is an artistic element, too. “We not only have to demonstrate that the lighting design will improve safety and increase productivity,” explains Koehler, “we also have to make sure the client likes the end result.”

Koehler and his company moved from Coquitlam to Mission in 2010: “We looked to relocate in many communities, from Squamish to Chilliwack, but were constantly drawn back to Mission, so here we are.” Since moving his family and business to Mission, Koehler has volunteered his professional services to Fraser River Heritage Park, and contracted his technical expertise to improve various local organizations’ lighting, including the Mission Leisure Centre, Fire Station No. 1, Municipal Hall, and RCMP building. Koehler, who has earned the right to use the post-nominal LC (Lighting Certified), has the education and experience needed to provide topnotch professional service, plus he participates in annual professional

Spotlight on Business Excellence: A champion for business and community: Carlo Billinger Kathleen Rake

CLICK MEDIA WORKS

Carlo Billinger is recipient of the 2015 Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce President’s Award recognizing his leadership in the business community and years as a community champion. “I truly am honoured,” says Billinger, co-owner of Rex Cox Men’s Wear Ltd., a fixture on First Ave. in Mission’s downtown for 90 years. “I am also very fortunate,” he adds, “to have Rex Cox as my stepping-off point and Ted Buckle as a business partner who puts up with me being away.” Buckle and Billinger have owned Rex Cox since 1979. Billinger came to Mission 59 years ago and has made it his life and work

centre ever since. He names two of his greatest accomplishments as raising his family in Mission and being an integral part of historic downtown Mission. And, even though he moved his residence to south of the Fraser River, he still refers to Mission as home, whether talking to visitors in the store or travelling in Europe, Asia or the U.S. Billinger’s other contributions to community and demonstrations of leadership include 10 years on the former Mission Hospital Board, where he was instrumental in the smooth transition to Fraser Health Authority; participating in the formation and building of Mission’s Economic Development Committee,

“Community is people,” says Billinger as he takes time in his store to have some fun with Mission resident Andrea Beketa.

GROWTH IN MISSION

BusinessTRACK Immigrants, business leaders make key connections in new Local Immigration Partnership program Business is all about networking and connections. And if you are new to Mission and you don’t have a job or friends or family, what do you do? Mission’s federally-funded Local Immigration Partnership (LIP) and its nine-member council of community leaders in April introduced a Connector Program to help solve that problem for those new to Canada. The concept is simple and helps create a network for both employers and immigrants in Mission. “Volunteer connectors are asked to provide three contacts for a client to follow up with and the new contacts repeat the process. The conversations are not job interviews,” said Rick Rake, program coordinator and chair of the Mission LIP council based at Mission Community Services Society (MCSS). Participants benefit by gaining knowledge of the local job market and provides them with information key to upgrading or retraining for a career they would like to pursue in Mission and the region.

For small and mid-size employers, the program helps answer significant questions they may have about new immigrants, their knowledge of the country and their skillsets. It puts them directly in touch with skilled newcomers in the community. The Connector Program is just one of several initiatives introduced by the LIP in its Action Plan for Mission, including an Ambassaor ‘buddy’ program for immigrants, partnership development, and guerilla marketing campaign to ensure MCSS Settlement and Integration services are top of mind in the community. The LIP was launched in Mission in April of 2014 at MCSS. To volunteer as a Connector or to participate as a client, contact Rake at 604-826-3634 or email rick.rake@ missioncommunityservices.com. MCSS Welcome Centre is located at 33179 Second Ave. To learn more about MCSS, click on www. missioncommunityservices.com.

• For more information, contact Rick Rake at Mission Community Services Society. Call 604-826-3634 or email rick.rake@ missioncommunityservices.com • WHO ARE CONNECTORS? They are people who know large numbers of people and are in the habit of making introductions. Connectors know people through social, cultural, professional and economic circles, and have a special gift of bringing people together who work or live in different circles. • The Mission LIP is funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Heather Ann

Anne Kristine

(66 years old) Mission, BC

Heather Ann Reyda, born February 16, 1988 to Jeffrey Carkner and Susan Ann Reyda passed away on June 30, 2015 at the age of 27 years of age. Heather was an extremely devoted mother and wife. She will be dearly missed by her children Sommer Elizabeth, Mia Alexandra, Selena Marie and her husband Boris Szczygielski. She leaves behind many relatives and friends as well. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: http://www.gofundme.com/ heathersgirls

Anne Kristine Schmidt (née Anna Reddekopp) passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on July 2, 2015 in Abbotsford, BC. Her home town for 60 years. She was born on September 22, 1926 to Abram and Margaretha Reddekopp near Blumenhof, SK. Anne was the youngest child of a large farming family. She was a lady who left a particular impact on people, a creative woman on many levels. Anne liked to play guitar, sing, sew, cook, bake and write poetry. She could whistle like a bird and in her later years was well-known for her artistic abilities as a painter of subject matter with very peaceful settings, including thatched cottages amidst colourful gardens on the banks of streams, often cast in beautiful light. A love for animals depicted these scenes with horses, rabbits, dogs, cats and birds. Wildlife, cats, kittens, vases of flowers, seascapes with tall ships or lighthouses were other themes in her artwork. Anne will be dearly missed and is survived by her husband Jacob Schmidt, children Robert, Loren (Susan) and Donna (Chris). Her grandchildren are Donna’s daughter Sarazen and Loren’s sons Taylor and Spencer. Many nieces and nephews also remember her very fondly. A memorial service will be held on July 18, 2015 at 2:00 pm, Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1672 Salton Road, Abbotsford, BC. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the BC Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, BCSPCA (bcspca.ca).

George did not believe he would live past age 50 and with the greatest sense of humour often discussed “stroking out”, somehow knowing his untimely fate. He is survived by his wife of nearly 45 years, Lorraine McAdie and their two boys, Shawn (Marlee), Chad (Ria), and his daughter Megan and John (considered his 3rd son); all with whom he shared his honorable work ethic, passion for fishing, and lust for life. While George had countless numbers of extended family and friends, none were closer to him than his seven best friends and grandkids; Jake, Jaiden, Dawson, Cole, Sydney, Jude and Emery. There will be no viewing as we refuse to honour his request to prop him up in the corner with a cigarette in his mouth. Everyone who understands George’s sick and twisted sense of humour is asked to join us formally Saturday July 11th at 3pm at Seven Oaks Alliance Church, 2575 Gladwin Road Abbotsford and following the service at the McAdie residence at 10063 Mountain View Road, Mission. BYOB is requested.

SHEPHERD David Walker Passed away peacefully June 27, 2015 at the age of 76 years. A resident of Abbotsford for the past 35 years, David was a long time employed in the auto sales profession and former sales manager at Murray GM. He is survived by his wife Shirley, son Michael and daughter Julie all of Abbotsford; son James of London, England; sister Anne Weatherhead of Scotland and many other relatives and friends in business, on the golf course and playing pickle ball. A celebration of David’s life will be held Saturday, July 18 between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at The Phoenix Lounge, 33780 King Road, Abbotsford. Please don’t wear black. Online condolences to the family may be made to: www.wiebeandjeskefh.com
