Elderly woman in crash dies An 88-year-old woman died when a car crashed into a concrete abutment in central Langley June 20. The crash took place at about 10:15 a.m. in the 4600 block of 232nd Street. A 92-year-old man was also hospitalized.

Two charged over 2014 raid Almost a year after a raid discovered drugs and cash, two alleged gang associates have now been charged. Officers raided house in the 4600 block of 236th Street. They found $400,000 in drugs and chemicals, equipment and $5,400. Leonard Alan Joseph Pelletier, a 48-year-old Langley man, has been charged with five counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and one count of resisting or obstructing a peace officer. Jason Francis Wallace, 26, of Langley, is charged with six counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

When she has an attack, it feels like choking, Macleod said. “You feel like you can’t catch your breath,� she said. Her lungs close up “like the fingers of a hand,� she said. She has to use a puffer to keep her lungs open, and if she can’t control her condition that way, the next stage is to get an oxygen tank. “I don’t want to get one of them,� Macleod said. Macleod’s problem is that some people in her neighbourhood use fire pits or have back yard bonfires during the summer. Despite all outdoor fires being banned at this time of year, they are still common throughout the rural and older suburban parts of the Township. Macleod knows she could report fires to the Langley Township fire department, but in general she doesn’t want to damage her relationships with otherwise friendly, nice neighbours. She has spoken to a few of them privately about her medical condition and asked them to stop burning. One of the problems seems to be that new people sometimes move in and assume they’re out in the country and can now have a fire in their yard. “There’s absolutely no fires permitted,� said Walker. The Township, as it has for years, is pursuing a zero-tolerance policy against anyone starting a backyard fire, whether a bonfire or in a firepit. The fine is $200. Some people are reluctant to phone in tips about fires. “We don’t release the caller’s information,� Walker said. “It’s strictly confidential.� Only propane and charcoal briquette barbecues are allowed in the Township, and fire pits are banned.

Longtime proponents of an Aldergrove pool are upbeat but still want some changes after last week’s announcement by Langley Township. “Well, we still want an indoor pool,� said Joanne Nicolato of the Aldergrove Recreation and Pool Society. For years the society has called for an eight-lane, 50-metre, indoor pool.

Last week the Township announced a $28.5 million, 25-metre, six lane, outdoor year-round pool and rec centre on the site of the former Aldergrove Elementary, which will be demolished. The society released an official statement this year that supported the project overall but called for enclosing the pool but acknowledges funding is not there for an indoor pool. “During the next three years of construction, this society will be working very closely with the Township of Langley, to help them actively seek out funding to turn the current plans of this outdoor pool into an indoor pool by opening day,
May 2018,� said the statement. The centre includes a wave pool, and a “lazy-river� feature that will surround three large waterslides as well as smaller waterslides and a water park. “I agree with council,� said Nicolato. “I think it’s a destination project.� Because the pool is being built so that it could be enclosed, the society will be seeking to turn it indoor before the projected opening day of May 2018. “Definitely we still want the indoor pool,� she said. “It’s just how we get it.� > See our letters page or visit www.facebook.com/langleyadvance to see more reaction

Odin the English Mastiff had a good life in Langley. And now, thanks to Langley City Fire Rescue members and friends of Judy Head, he’s had a comfortable death, a death befitting a beloved pet named for a Norse god. The 180-pound dog had lost his will to live, Head explained. “He has had spinal arthritis, a knee replaced and a history of kidney ailments. He was tired. We knew his time had come,� she said. Born in Texas, he had been a member of the family since a puppy, almost seven years ago. He quietly slipped away from the family home in Brookswood on June 20. Odin went 30-feet down into a nearby ravine. They found him on Father’s Day. Head called on friends but they could lift him. “One of them went and bought him a $25 steak and fed it to him – the last meal,� she said. They called the SPCA and a representative attended.
Head also sought help from the City fire department. “We had two fully manned fire trucks with all the personnel on scene, along with the SPCA. They carried him out on the stretcher and he looked like royalty on a chariot,� she said. A procession of two fire trucks, the SPCA vehicle, and three passengers vehicles convoyed him to the Animal Emergency Hospital in Langley. “All the firefighters came to help move him into the hospital,� she added. Odin, instead of dying alone in the woods, was euthanized, surrounded by family. Head smiles when she thinks about Odin on his final kingly procession. Head, a single mother of two, can’t say enough about the firefighters and others who came to help when the family was going through a crisis. “The firefighters also handed out stuffed animals to all the kids who were at the house with their parents who had come to try and help, and to my daughter, who was losing her beloved pet,� she said.

What was Ride For Hope is now Ride for the Kids, a July 2 cycling journey that will see participants pedal from Langley to Chilliwack and back in their efforts to generate money for the Canucks for Kids Fund in support of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.

Scaling down the fundraiser and changing its name was necessary this year, Bandura said. “Due to sponsorship changes... this is the core group that’s done the ride for the past nine years, so rather than create any further conflict, we changed the name, and Ride for the Kids fits.� n Thursday, July 2, the cyclists will depart from Twin Rinks at 8 a.m. and travel round trip to Chilliwack, with a stop at the newly built Canuck Place Children’s Hospice in Abbotsford on their way back. The initial ride, in July 2007, raised $10,960 for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and the totals have risen ever since.

friend of mine lost a child this morning. And it was my fault. It was something I did. The kid died in my garden. It was the same garden where I met my friend quite a few years ago. People who know me know that I am an inveterate whistler. I tend to mix my pleasures. When I’m enjoying what I’m doing, I whistle while I work – when I’m writing, when I’m paddling my canoe, and especially when I’m gardening. I just can’t help myself. The music gets inside me and it’s just got to get back out again. It was fall. I was chopping up some plants for composting, and I was whistling away at a swing jazz tune that I remembered from an old movie. Next thing you know, there’s a Chickadee singing with me! He’s perched on a corn stock not 10 feet away from me. Amazed, I stopped whistling… and he stopped singing. He just cocked his head and looked at me. Tentatively, I picked up my tune again. And he joined back in. We were jamming. No. We were cooking! I’ve always had a love for nature, but that day – and the many days after, when my friend returned again and again to share music with me – my

It’s dry out there, and about to get drier and hotter with a heat wave expected to start as soon as this weekend. Every year, firefighters spend a lot of their time dealing with what can only be called stupid fires – fires started through simple, careless ignorance. Cigarette butts are still the main cause of these fires, butts tossed onto dry grass or bark mulch on medians and in parks. The smoker can walk away and nothing seems to happen, sometimes for hours or days. But the fire can smolder, burrowing underground and biding its time. Then there’s the puff of smoke, and if we’re lucky, the fire department gets a call when that’s all it is. There have been some serious fires in the Lower Mainland in recent years, including in 1996 and 2005 in Burns Bog. The smoldering fires claimed 170 hectares and 200 hectares of land respectively. Numerous small brush fires have struck in other suburban areas around Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. In Langley Township in the summer of 2010, about 20 acres was burned along the Trans Canada Highway, threatening nearby homes, barns, and livestock. The cause was likely a cigarette tossed from a car. Other communities north of the Fraser River have to worry about interface fires – blazes that start in the forest and then march towards residential areas. If the drier, hotter summers we’ve experienced recently are the result of global warming, we will only see conditions primed for fires more frequently in the future. That will place an even larger burden on us to be cautious with fire. Learn about your local rules for outdoor burning before you put a match to the bonfire or fire pit. Put out that cigarette somewhere safe. And keep an eye out for those telltale puffs of smoke coming from the vacant lots, the medians, and the backyards. – M.C.

Aldergrove swimmers need a voice Dear Editor, I attended the unveiling of the new recreation centre for Aldergrove last night [June 17]. There were many great ideas included in the design. The library will stay at the Kinsmen Centre to cut costs. There will be a great new ice arena which will double as an events centre to help with costs. A beautiful waterpark which will change many people’s destination from the Cultus Lake Waterpark to Aldergrove’s new waterpark will be open for four or five months of the year. But where is our indoor pool? It is non-existing. There will be a lap pool that is heated yearround but there are no plans to heat the area between the change rooms and the pool or provide a heated area for parents to sit and watch their children participate in lessons. The waterpark has an area that is ideal
for those needing rehabilitation from surgery to walk but only in the summer months so if you are fortunate to only need this rehabilitation in the summer, it will be useful to you. The new recreation centre does not provide the indoor pool that residents of Aldergrove have been asking for but it provides much needed summer water activities to the community. In a conversation with one councillor, I was told that I was the only one in Aldergrove who wanted an indoor pool. If you also would like to see an indoor pool in Aldergrove or at least a heated area for those going from the change room to the pool and for spectators, please contact Langley Township council and let them know. There were two more public information meetings this week, but because of the short time frame, the information meetings
are over before most heard about them. Go to the Township website, view the plans and comment to the Township council. There is a large ice community in Aldergrove with a voice. They have had ice for a long time. There has never been an indoor pool in Aldergrove so the swimming community does not have a large voice. Looking at the new recreation centre plans, it is easy to see who has the largest voice. I cannot emphasize enough that you must contact the Township councillors immediately to help generations of “would be” swimmers in Aldergrove. We are told that the recreation facility will open in May 2018. Let it open with warmth in winter for swimmers. Dianne Kask, Aldergrove
Alarming encounters in Langley City Dear Editor; The state of affairs in the parks in Langley City is deplorable. Encampments of homeless now abound, making even day time trips to the park dangerous and unwelcoming. In the last two weeks alone I have had frightening encounters and experiences in both Douglas Park and Nicomekl Park. I walk my dogs daily usually at Douglas Park or through the trails and into Nicomekl Park. During the last year I have seen a frightening change in both of these parks. At Douglas Park, which is directly behind an elementary school, I have come across
multiple used needles on the ground and in the planters. Open drug use at all times of the day goes on. The bushes along the west fence are being used as a toilet and reek of urine. People pass out all over the park from drug use and drinking, all the while a City-paid security guard wanders around ignoring it. At Nicomekl Park there is a large encampment of homeless people who hang out beside the bridge huffing paint, and drug use and dealing goes on openly. Recently my dogs and I were chased over the bridge by a male who was either high or crazy muttering threats at me because I
had no money to give him. This happened at 2 p.m. in the afternoon. There is garbage littering both parks now, some of which is likely biological waste. The river is full of garbage
and is used as a toilet as well. Complaints to the City, the police and politicians have gone unanswered. Dana Bowman, Langley

They spend like drunken sailors in port for one night yet I haven’t seen anything in local media that would indicate we sheep, the taxpayers, have even noticed. Personally, I think it’s time for a taxpayer revolt – just compare your property tax increases over the past few years with the “additional” value you receive for these never-ending rip-off charges and you should be just about fed up. either Lori Armour nor Lori’s Donair are strangers to Langley, but the two have finally come together inside four permanent walls in downtown Langley City this past week. The proprietor and her family have called Willoughby home for a dozen years, and Armour’s been in the donair business even longer. In fact, she’s been running Lori Donair
out of a trailer on Annacis Island since 1996, and this is the first permanent location for her business. Armour is pretty excited that it’s in her hometown. I’m speaking of the drive-thru diner at the crossroads of Douglas Crescent and 203rd Street – in the former Dairy Queen location in the Langley Plaza – that has, since those early days, been transformed into countless restaurants.

And Armour is hosting the official grand opening on Saturday, July 18, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with partial proceeds from that day’s sales going to the Canadian Cancer Society. The event is expected to feature food, giveaways, and entertainment – including the musical stylings of her youngest son Cole – who has made quite a

dropped in this week to see Kaushik Patel at the former Wired Monk, across from our offices at 202nd Street and 64th Avenue. I couldn’t help but notice that a few days back the Monk signs came down in favour of new signs boasting
a new Café Plus, with emphasis it was the same management and staff. I needed to find out what was going on. It turns out Patel had long wanted to have his own coffee shop, and aspired to try his skills as an independent. Well that dream was realized June 1, when they made the switch. Independence, he insists, gives him much more flexibility in everything from the menu to retailing. He’s already stocking the shelves with new coffee accessories, and
expects to have coffee machines and presses for sale soon. With a background in the hospitality industry dating back about 12 years, Patel and his wife Viral took over this business in June 2013. He said they fell in love with the location. Cafe Plus, which he has tagged with the slogan “serving more than coffee…” will host its official grand opening in late July or early August. Good luck to both the Armour and Patel families on their new ventures.

I Found You is a fusion – a blend of country, pop, and rock that its two sibling creators – Robyn and Ryleigh Gillespie – believe could be their best work yet. For the first time ever, the pair of Langley singing and songwriting sisters have released a song written by both of them, and they’ve spent the past month travelling Western Canada telling anyone who will listen. One of their next stops is right here – in their hometown – when they perform this and other new Robyn & Ryleigh favourites at the JRfm Canada Day celebrations happening July 1 at the Langley Events Centre. “We’ve been on the road around B.C. and Alberta doing a radio and concert tour, along with wrapping up the recording process for our next album,” explained Robyn, the oldest of the musical duo. Late this spring, the sisters released I Found You to iTunes. It is the first single from their upcoming album – by the same name – which is expected to be released this fall. Pointing specifically to this single, Ryleigh explained how they tried something new in an effort to meld her inspirations of pop and rock with Robyn’s flare for country music, to create something danceable for everyone. “It was important to us to create something that will leave people with a smile,” Ryleigh added. “Music can make your mood go from

City celebrates community spirit Douglas Park was a hub of activity for a summer celebration on Saturday, June 20, the day before the official arrival of the season. Community Day – which marked the 60th anniversary of the incorporation of Langley City – didn’t include a parade this year, due to a lack of entries, but this didn’t take away from an event that featured highland games, a firefighter challenge, entertainment on the Spirit Square stage, tug-of-war contests, a youth zone, and a kids zone complete with a construction area, games, bouncy castles, and balloon art.

A newly unveiled mural that stretches along the east wall of the Royal Bank building in Brookswood has a simple message: community. The introduction of the acrylic art piece was a highlight of Summerfest at RBC Saturday afternoon, June 13. Artist Felicity Holmes joined dignitaries including Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese for a ceremonial ribbon cutting. Holmes completed the piece in roughly four months, working at her home studio in Brookswood. The mural features images distinctive to the area, including Tattoo, the fibreglass horse statue that was vandalized in Brookswood Park just before last year’s Summerfest. “You’ve got everything to

Industries to create the mural. “I am so honoured for everyone who came to help me and put my name forward to do this,” said Holmes, who has lived in Brookswood for the past 19 years. “Art is everything.” Holmes said she used “bright colours intentionally so that people can really see it.” Art is a hobby for Holmes, who works as a weekend manager at Backyard Vineyards in Langley.

Langley is ready to host the province once again in the annual Miss BC, Teen BC and Mrs. BC Pageant next weekend. Current Miss Teen BC, Langley resident Brette Joyal, hopes to crown a Langley contestant and keep the crown local at the Miss BC, Teen BC and Mrs. BC Pageant. The public is invited to vote for their favourite contestant for the People’s Choice award at www.missbc.ca. Newman sold luminaries in advance of the recent Relay for Life overnight fundraising event at McLeod Athletic Park while (right) Sylvia Anderson, one of Langley’s consummate community volunteers and a cancer survivor herself, was once again on hand at the fundraiser, which ran June 12 and 13 and benefited the Canadian Cancer Society.
Scrivens and Ann Lysaght are both cancer survivors and members of Abreast with FORTitude, the Fort Langley branch of the Abreast in a Boat dragon boat team. They both shared their personal stories of courage during the recent Relay for Life opening ceremonies.

Talent is one of the biggest draws at this year’s Walnut Grove Family Day Festival on Saturday, June 27. There will be plenty of things to see and do, but music and entertainment on the main stage will be constant throughout the day and perhaps what’s most exciting is just how much of that talent comes from in and around the Langleys. It’s a blend of kids entertainment, country music, animal exploration, and alternative rock as performers and presenters take turns

with his two brothers, Josh and Levi, in their band Her Brothers. The self-taught alternative rock group per-
forms from 12:30 to 1 p.m. and will be looking to connect with the audience. “It’s great,” Penner said of performing at festivals. “It’s always different. It’s about the message of the music.” Having lived in Langley for most of his life, Penner and his brothers have been performing together for almost a decade, which is considerable given that the youngest, Levi, is just 15. “We’ve been performing as Her Brothers for three years,” he said. It’s the band’s first time performing at this event and they will bring a diverse mix of music to the afternoon. “We play a lot of our own stuff,” noted Penner. “But we also mix covers into our sets to build that trust and connection with the audience. It’s about connecting.”

The brothers chose their band’s name from the desire to help women who don’t have a voice or can’t speak up for themselves. Sharing the stage throughout the day will be Surrey’s Korki the Clown, Abbotsford’s Kristal Barrett, Cloverdale’s Urban Safari Rescue and their Cinemazoo program, Zox of the Forest, Abbotsford’s Cambree Lovesy, Abbotsford’s 16-year-old Nicki Mier, and Langley performing duo Guy and a Girl.
For those not wanting to keep track of all the stage happenings, Fraser Valley 5 hosts Michael Thorne and Kristyl Clark will keep everyone informed throughout the day as emcees. Responsible for entertainment, Karen Reynolds, is part of the family day event’s committee. “We’ve got the whole park booked,� she said. “Even the [baseball] diamonds might have activity on them.� As the fourth annual event, organizers have listened to feedback from the

Around the park there will be plenty to see and do, Reynolds said. “There’s more field entertainment... more variety.� The Scouts will be on hand with their race cars, while there will also be a petting zoo, pony rides, a climbing wall, arts and crafts for kids, and the firehouse. “Soccer Shots is going to be there,� commented Reynolds. “They do demonstrations and stuff and the
community in putting the large event together. “There’s so many details,� Reynolds said. “We’ve been planning for months.� New to this year is the involvement of Independent Grocer which is providing food for the concession. “We wanted proceeds [from food sales] to go to the cause, so Independent Grocer has donated all the food,� noted Reynolds. She added that families had been concerned wtih the high prices of outside vendors in the past

LAPS is planning to build an expanded facility to help care for cats, dubbed the ISOasis facility. With partial funding from Langley Township, it will allow cats to be isolated from one another and from other animals after they are first brought in as strays.
Palooza. “In order for us to help more homeless kittens, we need our Kitten Palooza to be huge success,” said LAPS executive director Sean Baker. “We’re running out of room.” Baker said he has never seen this many kittens come into the shelter at one time before. Many of the orphaned kittens have been fostered out to volunteers and staff. The younger ones have to be bottle fed. “They have to be fed every two hours day and night, for four weeks,” Baker said, adding that LAPS has amazing foster families. When you say you watered your chives, I wonder how frequently that was. This winter and spring, we had some very strange weather: torrential rain in
bursts but also very long spells of warm, dry weather. The dry spells were in months when we wouldn’t expect this. All this was very tricky for plants in containers. Containers do dry out frequently and when they do are very hard to re-wet because the dry soil can shrink away from the inner sides of the pot. You may drench the soil with water and
think the plants are having a good drink, not knowing the water is running down the soil crack around the inside edges and away. But it’s an odd problem. Chives have the reputation of being very hardy and healthy: no pests and the only disease is an occasional attack of rust which kills them if it’s let go for ages. continued on A31…

A book launch is being held tonight at a local car dealership. Although it’s not the traditional venue for a book signing, OpenRoad Infiniti’s in Langley’s high-end auto mall is hosting a celebration for Leah Goldstein and the release of her book, No Limits. The book is a powerful true story of Goldstein, and the autobiography is being hailed as a “stunning example” of a life without limits. Born in Vancouver, by age 11 she was a blackbelt. She enlisted in the Israeli Military, and became the first female instructor of the elite commando division before transitioning to a special forces unit combatting terrorism and violent crime. The extreme lifestyle of the secret police eventually took its toll on her, and she found her salvation in a bicycle. She then pursued a 10-year career as a professional cyclist in Europe and North America, and triumphed as world champion in the gruelling 3,000-mile Race Across America. From crashes to podiums, from fear to triumph, these memoirs gives a glimpse at what’s possible

The Langley Thunder’s 8-6 win over the New Westminster Salmonbellies Thursday at New Westminster’s Queen’s Park Arena fits into the “upset” category. The Thunder snapped a four-game skid to improve to 3-5 while the Salmonbellies suffered their first loss after opening the Western Lacrosse Association season with six straight wins. Thunder goaltender Rocky Bowman stopped 44 of 50 shots and was named the game’s first star. The Thunder hosted Maple Ridge last night, Wednesday, June 24, after the Langley Advance went to press.

ictor Blaine admits he is a bit of a risk-taker. So this makes gymnastics – a sport in which he goes airborne in all sorts of ways with the goal of (hopefully) landing on his feet – a natural fit. “I’m kind of that guy who looks for excitement,” he said. The 16-year-old Langley Gymnastics Foundation athlete flipped, flew, spun, and bent his way to a spot on the six-member Team BC men’s artistic gymnastics squad that will compete at the Western Canada Summer Games being held Aug. 7 to 16 in Wood Buffalo, near Fort McMurray, Alta. He qualified for the Western Canada meet from the Ogopogo Invitational held in West Kelowna from June 5 to 7. The top four all-around gymnasts along with two specialists qualified for the provincial men’s squad competing at the Western Canada Summer Games. Athletes made the team based on their scores in pommel horse, rings, floor exercise, vault, parallel bar, and high bar. On the strength of his firstplace result on vault and second-place effort on high bar, Blaine grabbed the fourth qualifying spot, and while satisfied with that, felt he could have done a little better. “I’m just proud I made the team,” the 16-year-old said. The current Western Canadian Gymnastics champion Lane Messier (Flicka) leads a strong
men’s artistic gymnastics team. Messier has won a total of five western Canada gold medals. Joining him is Gymnastics BC champion Treyson Cerrato (Surrey) who finished third at the western event. The other Team BC members are: Blaine, Dawson Friesen (Twisters), Cohen Kiers (Twisters), and Ryan Woodhead (Delta). Blaine’s coach at LGF, Kris Krunick, has confidence that the young athlete will be a major contributor to the provincial team’s score at the Games. “He has a chance at some individual medals as well if he hits his routines,” Krunick said. “At the Western championships in early May he was fourth all round and won a silver medal on floor and rings, so it’s possible.” Krunick said he was happy to see Blaine make this talented team, mostly for the experience of participating in a multi-sport event and also from the team aspect of this event. “It’s a lot of fun when you’re going to a competition with a team,” Krunick said. “I know this event will lead to bigger events for Victor in the future.”

laine is a veteran in the gymnastics world, starting 11 years ago, and over the past decade, has dedicated himself to the sport, training at the LGF facility connected to the Langley Events Centre five days and about 19 hours each week. “I find it fun and I’m pretty competitive,” he said. “I usually go year-by-year,” he added. “I make goals each year and if I achieve them, then I keep going harder and harder. Usually I keep my goals in a range that I know I can get.” On the topic of goals, Blaine’s is simple going into his first Western Canada Summer Games. He wants to be the best he can be, going up against gymnasts from Canada’s four western provinces and three territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut). “I just want to go there and do the best of my ability and try to hit, like, every event,” he said. Blaine is able to glean advice from LGF teammate Cam Stanley, who has competed at these Games before. “I can just ask him how the experience was,” Blaine said,
adding “I’ve competed against these guys before, too.” He does have experience at a high level competition, having attended the nationals last month in Gatineau, Que., placing 23rd out of 49 gymnasts. “I didn’t do as well as I wanted to but I did all right,” Blaine said. In Gatineau, he was joined by his LGF teammates Stanley and Tyler Welch.

eading the B.C. women’s team into the Games is Ella Rogers, who is the current Western Canadian and Gymnastics BC champion. She joins a dynamic women’s artistic gymnastics team. Also representing Team BC is perennial provincial and western Canada medalist Darby McInytre. The Games take place once every four years. For B.C.’s young gymnasts, they are a great stepping stone to future Canadian championships and Canada Winter Games. The artistic gymnastics events are in the first week.

There is no specific goal this year, in terms of how much money is raised. “Once you start to set numbers, then things start to spiral out of control,” Bandura explained. “The whole ride was designed to create awareness and raise as much as we possibly can for the children and families that really need it at the hospice. angley’s biggest Canada Day blow out takes place rain or shine at the Langley Events Centre. Plans are in place for a day of fun and organizers are watching the forecast. The activities are planned for out of doors but if Mother Nature proves uncooperative, the Langley Canada Day JRBQ can be moved indoors. “The event will go either way,� said Jared Harman,
the LEC business development manager. Langley Township and the LEC are working with various sponsors to host the community’s 148th birthday. “The goal is to make this an annual event,� he noted. The event has a country flavour, thanks to the partnership with JRFM radio which has for a couple of years now hosted its Basics for Babies fundrais-

Fort Langley National Historic Site
The many cultures of Canada are celebrated at the July 1 events at the Fort Langley National Historic Site.
HISTORIC SITE
Fort celebrates the nation History and modern culture spotlighted. Fort Langley’s marking of the 148th birthday of this nation includes a ceremony to swear in several new Canadians. The Fort Langley National Historic Site is the setting for a citizenship ceremony on Canada Day at 10 a.m. near the Big House. The July 1 activities at the place where B.C. became a British colony includes activities for all ages and free admission, one of only a handful of times during the year when people are admitted free. Enjoy multicultural music, cake and ceremony at noon and family activities. After the citizenship ceremony, stick around for O Canada by the Kwantlen at the site flagpole at about 11:45 a.m. followed by cake at noon. The Metis dancers are next up at 12:30. People can also take in Japanese Taiko drummers at the cooperage building starting at 12:45 p.m. At 1 p.m. the cooperage building takes on a different international flavour when the Royal Academy of Bhangra Dancers perform. They perform again at 2 p.m. Up at the Big House the First Capital Chorus performs barbershop music starting at 1:30 p.m.
A historic weapons demonstration takes place in the gallery (elevated walkway at the north end of the fort) starting at 2:30 p.m. The entertainment includes Hawaiian dancers at the cooperage at 3 p.m. and
Eureka at the gold mining tent. There are all day activities, such as airsoft muskets, children’s activities, farm animals, blacksmithing, coopering and visiting the displays around the fort. The village’s cele-
bration continues at the neighbouring museums all day, including the Langley Centennial Museum and the BC Farm Machinery and Agricultural Museum, easily within walking distance of the historic site.
