Paddlers embark on Yukon quest The Yukon River Quest is being viewed as a personal challenge for members of an all-women’s paddling team. TROY LANDREVILLE tlandreville@mrtimes.com

The midnight sun will beam down on the 8 of Hearts and 57 other crews from around the world next week, as they paddle from Whitehorse to Dawson, Yukon Territory during the Yukon River Quest. The Quest is a three-day, 715 kilometre (444 mile) wilderness endurance paddling race in the Yukon, and is the world’s longest annual canoe and kayak race. The 8 of Hearts consist of Pitt Meadows residents Katie Stein Sather (the team captain and organizer), Debra Eisel, Betty McLeod, and Carol Woodworth, along with Isabelle Hamm and Ruth Ross from Maple Ridge and Whitehorse natives Deb Bartlette and 68-year-old Ingrid Wilcox, who is the founding member of the race, and is in her 14th year participating. Their goal is to have, as Ross puts it, “an amazing wilderness experience and push ourselves to limits we once thought were impossible.” This race is uncharted waters for most of the team, which is the oldest entry with members ranging in age from 57 to 71. The Whitehorse members and Sather have done this race before.

Sather, who is the commodore with the Pitt Meadows Paddling Club, said many of the local women involved are taking this as a personal challenge. “They never thought they’d be doing anything like this at this stage of their life,” said Sather, who has more than four decades of paddling experience. Sather’s appeal to the race is visceral in nature: “For some people, like me, wilderness paddling is an ongoing, ever-present yearning.” “This is the legendary Yukon River,” she added. “The river is a different kind

It’s spectacular in a different way than we have here.” From the banks of the Yukon River in Whitehorse, the 8 of Hearts will set off in their voyageur canoe next Wednesday, June 24 at noon. “It is a running start of 800 metres to the boats, but this is mostly for the media to enjoy, as there will be news crews from Europe and elsewhere,” Ross said. Three hours into the race the Yukon River opens up into Lake Laberge, which is about 30 miles long. This is the most challenging part of the trip because the lake is notorious for sudden storms.

The 8 of Hearts’ goal is to finish the race in fewer than 55 hours. To get ready for the momentous task ahead, the local crew has been practising four days a week and has worked up to six hours of steady paddling, once a week, which takes them as far as Widgeon Creek. Even with the training, Ross admits she is a little concerned about being properly prepared. “I am worried that after 55 hours, some people hallucinate,” Ross said. While in the boat, the team members have been snacking on small amounts of food and lots of liquids to keep their energy up. Safety is a priority: paddlers will be subject to a mandatory equipment check the day before the race. As well, weather is a wild card. Last year, it was cool, down to about 3 to 4ºC and overcast most of the journey. It doesn’t get dark overnight but it does “dim a little,” Sather said. Twenty-four hours of daylight will help the team members stay awake, in Ross’s opinion. The race purse depends on the number of entrants. Teams must finish in 55 hours to receive prize money, but many do the race for personal satisfaction of staking their claim to a coveted finisher pin in historic Dawson City. A teenager who took a 16-year-old girl to a home in Maple Ridge with the purpose of making her an escort has been sentenced to time served and two years of probation. Nicholas Boscoe, 19, pleaded guilty to one count of procuring a person to become a prostitute. He was sentenced Tuesday in provincial court in Port Coquitlam. Boscoe told the girl that she could make easy money as an escort, and arranged a meeting with David Kevin May, who offered her a place to stay. She was taken to a home in Maple Ridge, where she was provided with cocaine or speed and alcohol. On Jan. 24, 2014, Boscoe, May, and the girl were on their way to a “date” in Surrey when they got into an auto accident. They fled, but police caught them nearby. Last week’s removal of eight trees along Maple Ridge’s Shady Lane (124th Avenue between Laity and 216th Streets) drew attention from residents, fearing it was an attempt at beating the pending tree management bylaw. While those trees were removed appropriately under both the existing interim and pending bylaws, it seems that tree removal has polarized resident opinions. Maple Ridge Councillor Kiersten Duncan noted the proposed bylaw will better regulate how trees are cut and managed in the community. A Maple Ridge resident is tired of the trash that attracts wildlife and – she insists – puts people in danger. Garbage is a hot topic in Maple Ridge and one that new residents are seldom aware of until they ask their neighbours, “When is garbage day?” When they find out there isn’t city-wide garbage pick-up they are left to manage their waste on their own. One Maple Ridge resident, Elizabeth Taylor, has had enough of it. Living in Albion, Taylor has seen her fair share of bears grabbing trash and making off with it only to become dependent on garbage as a food source and potentially becoming a danger to residents in the area. “I’ve lived here for 15 years and the garbage situation here is terrible,” Taylor said. “Everyone is left to their own devices. What we have now is too detrimental to the wildlife.” Taylor began a petition on change.org (search: residential waste) about a month ago for an appropriate residential waste management system in the City of Maple Ridge. TransLink can’t win

t should be good news. TransLink says it saved $100 million

in 2014, and cut its executive compensation by five per cent. Spending is below inflation, fat is being trimmed – it should be something local mayors and provincial politicians are crowing about from the rooftops. If only it were that simple. TransLink remains, and will likely remain for years, the whipping boy of so many varied and diverse groups that it’s almost impossible to count them. There’s the anti-tax folks – whether organized groups like the Canadian Taxpayers Federation or anyone who gets red faced at the thought of 0.5 per cent extra in PST. There’s everyone who lives in the underserved outer suburbs, from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, to Langley and Surrey. There are the folks who do use transit, and can’t squeeze onto busy B-Line Vancouver buses. There’s folks who work in industrial parks devoid of bus stops. There are handicapped folks and seniors who’ve seen their HandyDART service chipped away year after year. TransLink, like the phone company and power company, provides a service we can’t really do without. And like those companies, it has had a lot of problems. Bloated executive salaries and lack of a coherent plan to serve growing communities were chief among those issues. When TransLink (or the phone company or the power company) does things right, no one notices. Your bus came on time? Your lights come on when you flip a switch? That’s just the way things should be. You never notice the effort that went into making sure the vast infrastructure behind those simple things. TransLink has its real problems, most notably with SkyTrain, but for the most part, the services it provides work pretty well. Its problems are in spending, executive salaries… and in communication. TransLink couldn’t release good news before the ballots were counted? It doesn’t matter how well TransLink is managed now. Like turning a bus around, changing their image will take a while. – TIMES

came down with the strangest feeling the other day. I actually felt excited about federal politics. It’s been a while since I’ve managed to muster up something like excitement for the federal realm. As a reporter/part time political junkie, I follow the news pretty avidly. The Mike Duffy trial, the senate scandal, various controversies over veterans, guns, crime and surveillance bills, and so on. But what really irks me about politics, and has for years, has been the lack of actual ideas tossed around during and before federal campaigns. The last decade has seen a lot of scare tactics instead. In the waning days of the federal Liberal government, the Grits tried to convince everyone east of Ontario that the Reform/Alliance/Conservatives were a bunch of deranged rednecks who would turn us into a chilly outpost of the United States, complete with guns and gutted health care. Finally the Tories won, and they held on through several minority governments and then scraped and scratched and clawed their way to a majority. Meanwhile, the Liberals continued to find out how far the Natural Governing Party could fall and found out that it was third place. Jack Layton led the NDP to a shocking win in Quebec and became leader of the official opposition, before succumbing to cancer. This was all very exciting, but it was about personality as much as politics. But this election, the one coming up this fall? This one is going to be about debates, sure, and leadership, and the stereotypes we all carry around about our favourite and least-favourite parties. But it’s also going to be about ideas. Real ideas, that could change Canadian society in fairly substantial ways. The NDP are making two big prom-

Feeling strangely excited about doings in Ottawa ises: to abolish the Senate, and to revitalize Canada’s manufacturing sector. NDP leader Tom Mulcair is talking about directly promoting high-tech manufacturers like Bombardier abroad, using the government of Canada to push our products into more markets. Abolishing the Senate, meanwhile, would require a major constitutional change, and the consent of MATTHEW most of the provinces. Both would be huge undertakings. Over in the Liberal corner, Justin Trudeau is talking about open government. He wants to look at changing the way we elect governments altogether, maybe moving to proportional representation or a preferential ballot. That would be the biggest change in the way we’ve elected governments, since women’s suffrage or the secret ballot. Meanwhile, the Tories dropped quite a few new bills into Parliament, even

though they won’t pass before the fall. They’re a framework for the election, and include banning niqabs during citizenship ceremonies, a new conservation area for Lake Superior, and some tough-on-gun-crime measures. Not as big and sweeping as the NDP and Liberal ideas, but the Conservatives have been in power for a while now. They’ll be CLAXTON running on the ideas they already put into practice, too. I don’t know what to think about all these ideas. Some of them are stupid, some are intriguing but might be flawed, and some of them are right up my alley. I’m going to have to read quite a bit more before this fall. All I can say is that I hope we talk about them a lot more between now and the day in October when we line up to mark our ballots. We have a task force from the City trying to solve a national problem of homelessness. This is an issue that is across Canada and should have a Canada government solution. The federal government’s only response is to say this is not their problem. They do have a policy to solve this indirectly. When homeless commit crimes or use drugs put them in jail for a longer time. Increase taxes to pay for increase of jail population. Perhaps they see a need to catch up to American incarceration rates. After all, drug addicts are worse than child molesters – or so it seems from their actions. The NDP is more reasonable with the view no one should be homeless in a country like Canada. Their simple solution is just increase taxes on rich (mostly they hope) and build homes now for anyone without a comfortable place to live. The real solution is more about growing the economy by investing in infrastructure and education so that the homeless have opportunity to work and contribute to society instead of being dependent on society. That is the policy I would like to see supported.

Writer misses point Dear Editor,

After reading Liberal apologist Cherryl Katnich’s letter in response to a letter written by George Serra, I was struck by how off-topic she was. I do believe the original letter was written in response to MLA Doug Bing’s “callous” remarks regarding the withdrawal of the recall application due to the proponent’s tragic family circumstances. I know one of the canvassers involved in this campaign, and he told me that the proponent’s aunt has subsequently died. Cherryl Katnich’s letter took a series of right turns leading to nowhere, and she completely missed the point. The Liberals are indeed a callous group of individuals whose tax cuts to corpora-

tions have led to the demise of our health care and education systems. This government has had to make up the shortfall in tax revenue by introducing user fees, tolls on bridges, increases in MSP premiums, increases in Ferry costs, etc. Perhaps we could review a few headlines brought to us courtesy of the most corrupt and mismanaged government in B.C. history. The largest debt in B.C.’s history was created by the Liberal government, which is now close to $60 billion. any summer evenings, the “beautiful” Memorial Peace Park sits near empty. Downtown Maple Ridge’s business association wants to change that by hosting a free, family-oriented outdoor Movie in the Park – not once but twice this summer, explained BIA executive director Ineke Beokhorst. Each event will feature an evening market from 6 to 9 p.m. Then, the first event on July 8 will feature a showing of The Lego Movie, with the second night (July 29) featuring Shrek. In both cases, the movies are expected to start about 9:15 p.m. “Bring your friends, family, and even the dog to enjoy this first annual outdoor movie under the stars,” Boekhorst said, hoping this will become an annual event – depending, of course, on interest. Organizers are anticipating between 450 and 750 people will attend the first night. And if excitement expressed by sponsors and vendors are any indication, Boekhorst said interest in such a community event is “very strong.” To fuel the excitement, The TIMES is parterned with organizers to offer a special “picnic” contest. Kendall Campbell and her Clydesdales drifted back in time last weekend. Campbell, the 35-year-old owner of Hazelnut Grove Clydesdales, brought her three horses to the BC Renaissance Festival at Albion Fairgrounds, conveniently located about seven minutes (driving time) from her stables in Maple Ridge. This is Campbell’s third year involved with the festival, the first in Langley and the past two in Maple Ridge, where the historical event relocated last summer. When the BC Renaissance Festival lost its jousting element four years ago, a mutual friend connected Campbell to festival owner and co-producer Christina Carr. The rest is history. When it came to her knowledge of the festival and its reenactments of early 16th century life, Campbell was a newbie in the field. “In six weeks we learned how to do all the medieval games, and all the costumes” she said. “We knew nothing about what medieval games were. Most people know what jousting is, so I started doing a lot of research and I built my own equipment.”

Dressed in early 16th century garb, Hazelnut Grove Clydesdales owner/operator Kendall Campbell gave 13-year-old mare Vie Va Vancouver a hug at Albion Fairgrounds at Renfest. Her equine parters are 18-year-old Shasta (her first Clydesdale), Shasta’s 13-year-old daughter Vie Va Vancouver, and Andy, a 17-year-old percheron gelding. All three performed in Ren Fest with Campbell handling the reins behind Vie Va Vancouver, Dawn Germscheid aboard Shasta, and Rachel Worthen riding Andy as part of the horse games. During the games, they captured as many rings as they can from poles lined along the grounds. They also partnered for the

always-popular “off with their heads” portion, where, with swords in hand, they rode swiftly in a straight line, knocking off mannequin heads attached to poles. The third element was quintain, in which they hit stationary targets. Campbell is very comfortable around Clydesdales, which average out to be about 16-hands high. She’s been closely involved with the giant horses since she was nine years old. It all began with Charlie, her father’s gelding which she and her dad would take to local driving meets, weddings, and

special events. In 2000, Campbell purchased Shasta from the Canadian Clyde Ride team in 2003 and began schooling and jumping her over fences. She also joined the Canadian Clyde Ride team for the 2004 Rose Bowl Parade. Today, Hazelnut Grove’s business is booming, focusing mainly on South Asian weddings, in which the groom rides a Clydesdale into the temple as part of the ceremony, and also doing horse-and-carriage work for weddings and other occasions. “I do more of the riding weddings than I do of the carriage,” Campbell said. “In the Indian culture, the groom will ride in on a horse, and I lead them, and the horses are all decorated up.” Campbell and her Clydesdales are also a big part of the Renfest contingent at parades. Campbell rode Vie Va Vancouver along the streets of downtown Fort Langley during the community’s May Day parade that took place on Victoria Day. She admits she knew very little about the festival and its participants when she was first approached, but she is catching on. “Since I started doing it, it’s a lot of fun,” she said. “We enjoy doing it.” The half-hour long Hazelnut Grove riding exhibitions ran all four days of the Renfest. Complementing the Clydesdales was the return of jousting, with J.A.W.S (Jousting Alliance of Washington State) bringing the popular element back to the fairgrounds, for an additional half-hour show to round out the festival’s horse games.

Staff at Alisa’s Wish Child and Youth Advocacy Centre in Maple Ridge had a great case of the Mondays this week, as a group of volunteers arrived in Maple Ridge to help repaint the exterior of the aging building. The group was made up of employees from T-Lane Nation, a shipping and logistics company based out of Mission, which also supports a variety of charitable endeavors. Alisa’s Wish is one of the charities supported by T-Lane Nation this year – in addition to helping paint the exterior of the centre, T-Lane will sponsor the organization through an upcoming charity golf tournament this fall.

Colette Madsen was among those who helped paint Alisa’s Wish Child and Youth Advocacy Centre on Monday. The centre was founded in 2012, after a government grant allowed for the creation of a youth advocacy centre in Maple Ridge. The centre aims to provide support for victims of childhood abuse – whether that abuse is emotional, physical, or sexual – in a safe and welcoming space, said Heather Walker, development coordinator with Alisa’s Wish. The cost of running

Alisa’s Wish is currently covered by the province, through the ministry of justice, until 2016 – at which point, the centre will have to find a way to fund itself, said Walker. T-Lane Nation’s upcoming golf fundraiser could be a vital part of securing more than $300,000 in funding during the next two years, in order to ensure the centre stays open, Walker said.

Unaware that police were still on his tail, a man well-known to local Mounties drove around the streets of Maple Ridge for almost two hours thinking he’d evaded arrest, last Thursday morning. More online But his apparent freedom was shortlived, said Ridge Meadows RCMP Const. Amanda Harnett. It started just before 1 a.m. on June 11, when an officer attempted to stop a pickup truck in the 24100 block of Dewdney Trunk Road. The driver “accelerated and drove off without stopping,” Harnett said. It’s the measures the driver took to avoid arrest that police are describing as “dangerous,” she elaborated. With the help of a police helicopter and dog, Mounties arrested Shawn Bradley Gillam.

Story written by dad, for son A local theatre group puts its own spin on a classic tale. ERIC ZIMMER ezimmer@mrtimes.com

While recovering from a heart attack in the early 1960s, Ian Fleming – creator of the James Bond series and character – was asked by his son Caspar to write a story. What Fleming wrote became a classic tale of a car that could fly, float, and even think: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. And this year, Maple Ridge’s own Theatre in The Country (TITC) are putting their own spin on the story, as they perform Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – The Musical, (written by Richard and Robert Sherman), all this month. “This is a fairly new musical,” said Reg Parks, artistic director of TITC, and director of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. “To my knowledge, it’s never been done in B.C. before.” The licensing for amateur productions only just became available last year, Parks explained, “so we’re kind of pioneering the show in that sense. It’s unique in that we had no real reference point in terms of seeing what others

Unmasking the ‘dark social’

re you familiar with the term dark social? While you might think it refers to the shadowy side of social media and Internet use, it is actually a term coined in 2012 by Alexis C. Madrigal, a senior editor at The Atlantic, to refer to the sharing of content that occurs outside of what is measured by web analytics programs. Examples of dark social include links copied and pasted into emails, instant messages, or shared via text message. So what we’re talking about here are links sent through online chat or other means rather than via a social media platform, from which referrals can be tracked. Why is this important? If you’re relying on your website or Internet-based marketing to track leads and determine how and where to spend your online marketing budget and resources, it means that the data that you are collecting may not accurately reflect the traffic sources to your site. internal parasites that pass microscopic eggs and you cannot see any signs. Tapeworms however may cause the pet to pass small rice like segments that are often seen around the anal area. Some pets show signs such as scooting on their hind end, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, increased appetite, distended abdomen and sometimes coughing. Since many pets can be exposed and infected with internal parasites, it is important to have a fecal examination done annually to check for microscopic eggs. In many dogs and

picked up by pets that inadvertently ingest parasite eggs or spores in contaminated soil, water, feces or food. In the case of tapeworms, they can be transmitted to dogs and cats by ingesting a flea. Some cats can also get parasites from hunting and eating some rodents. Puppies and kittens can also get intestinal roundworms from their mothers before birth, and also through the mother’s milk. The symptoms of intestinal parasites can vary. Unlike external parasites like fleas that you can see on the pet, they can have

cats that live an outdoor lifestyle where you can’t be sure what they are putting in their mouths, it is often advisable to de-worm with an appropriate medication from your veterinarian. Some medications will effectively treat for all types of worms, while others may simply treat roundworms. Your veterinarian will know which types your pet will be at risk for, given its age and lifestyle. Puppies and kittens should be dewormed several times as they are growing as they may be re-infected as parasites migrate through the body as

they grow. Adult dogs and cats may also need to be de-wormed more than twice a year if they are at higher risk. Many adult flea treatments contain heartworm prevention medication that also aids in the prevention of intestinal parasites as well. I know that the thought of your pet having intestinal parasites may give you the heebie-jeebies, but they are easy to treat and even easier to prevent. KATIE’S PLACE DAVID spent many years living outside as part of a feral colony. He was fed by a kind man, but the man had to move, and the home was torn down. David was taken in by another shelter in bad shape. He had lice and all of his teeth had to be removed. David was transferred to us. At ﬁrst he did show all the signs of a feral cat. If you walked up to his cage he would hiss and spit. However once David was released into his room he quickly calmed down. David may never become a lap cat, but we are certain that with time, patience, and love he will make someone a great companion. He is a sweet boy with gorgeous eyes.

FIREFLY came to us as a 5 month old kitten with her sister Beetle. They were both very shy, but Firefly was always the more social one. Oddly enough Beetle found a home before Firefly. Firefly was in a foster home and we’ve been told she is one smart kitty. She learned little tricks like opening a door, and pestering the dog until he moved away from the sliding door so she could have a better view of the outside. Firefly is very playful and will do best in a home with another playful cat. She isn’t much into the mushy stuff but will sit in your lap and allow pets. Firefly will keep you entertained. She really suits her name.

MORLEY is a very handsome boy with super soft fur. He lost his beloved person to cancer and her final wish was that Morley would find a safe and loving home. He is about 10 years old, and initially he was very upset when his whole world fell apart and he found himself in a shelter. When he first arrived he cowered in the back of his cage. With a little time and care Morley has come out of his depression and gladly runs up to people visiting his pen for pets and scratches. He is a love sponge. We are hoping that Morley will find a second chance at a good life with a family that loves him as much as his previous owner did.

ONYX came to us because her owner no longer wanted her, and was planning on euthanizing her if we did not take her. We can’t imagine how unloved Onyx must have felt. Onyx had a hard time at the shelter when she ﬁrst came in. She wanted love but was too angry to allow us into her world. With time Onyx relaxed. She’ll still give you a hiss and a swat but now it’s just a tradition, party of her identity. What she really loves is the petting. Onyx is a diabetic and requires injections twice a day but other than some soft grumbling, she is a good patient. Onyx is really an individual and needs a person that will appreciate that about her.

There is no off-season for Simon Fraser University wrestler Payten Smith. The 18-year-old Maple Ridge residentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s calendar was full this spring, as Smith added a pair of high-profile silver medals in April and May, respectively, to her already impressive trophy mantle. Smithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest hardware came from the Junior Pan American Championships, held May 6-8 in Havana, Cuba. In the 72 kg female freestyle final, Smith lost 11-0 to Cuban national Mabelquis Perez. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was tough â&#x20AC;&#x201C; very tough,â&#x20AC;? Smith said, describing her match against Perez. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was more one-sided. From the matches that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve won and lost this year, I really need to up my strength and mostly just [lift] weights.â&#x20AC;? Smith guaranteed herself at least a silver medal, and a spot in the final, by defeating Andrimar Daniela Lazaro Diaz of Venezuela 16-5 in one of the semifinal matches. Qualifying Smith for the Junior Pan Am meet was her silver medal result at the Canadian junior national championships held in Guelph, Ont., in April. Even though she lost to Guelphâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gracelynn Doogan 10-6 in the title match, Smithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second-place finish punched her ticket to Havana. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I missed a throw and I got pinned,â&#x20AC;? Smith said, about her match with Doogan. However, clinching a spot at the Junior Pan Am meet didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t guarantee that Smith would take to the mats in Havana.

Mostly through a gofundme page set up on her behalf, Smith managed to raise a whole lot of money â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as in $2,000 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in a short amount of time to pay for her trip and expenses. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to thank all those who contributed,â&#x20AC;? said Smith, who even two weeks before the meet wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sure if she was going to afford to go to Havana. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I appreciate it and I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have gotten there without their support.â&#x20AC;? For both the junior nationals and Junior Pan Am championships, Smith had to shed a few pounds â&#x20AC;&#x201C; she wrestled in the 90 kg weight class during a dominant high school career at Maple Ridge Secondary that saw her go undefeated in four years while winning four consecutive B.C. provincial titles.

Smith had no points scored against her from 2011 to 2014, and became the only B.C. girl to win gold at the Canada Summer Games. After a fantastic senior year with the MRSS Ramblers, Smith was named high school female athlete of the year at the Sport BC 2015 Athlete of the Year awards ceremony, held at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver in March. The award recognizes a female athlete who was enrolled in a B.C. secondary school, and who competed in a sport, or sports â&#x20AC;&#x201C; team or individual, representing her school in the 2013/14 school year. Fast forward to the spring, and Smith went on a strict weight-loss regiment in order to wrestle in Guelph and, ultimately, in Cuba.

She said she did a lot of running and underwent a â&#x20AC;&#x153;different change of lifestyle.â&#x20AC;? Smith admitted the drop in weight impacted her â&#x20AC;&#x153;a bit.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a different style when you drop weight classes,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot faster, more technicalâ&#x20AC;Ś when you get into the higher weight classes it more depends on your strength, so you have to be more rounded in all areas.â&#x20AC;? Smith has taken a few lumps this year but feels this will make her a better wrestler in the long run. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It teaches you but it kinda sucks in a way,â&#x20AC;? she admitted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You have to kind of take a step back and look at what you did wrong, and what you did right as well, and how you can improve, and how you can build upon what mistakes you made.â&#x20AC;? Wrestling was just one aspect of the Junior Pan American experience for Smith. This was her first time in a tropical destination and she had the pleasure of staying in a five-star hotel. But at the same time she also witnessed poverty that she hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seen before. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It gives you a bit of perspective,â&#x20AC;? she explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re pretty poor there and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never been to a country like that before. I found that to be a really valuable experience.â&#x20AC;? NCAA competition starts up again in October and Smith is training at SFU and in Maple Ridge with her Clan teammate (and roommate) Abby Lloyd, as she prepares for her sophomore year with the Clan, who she competed for in the 82 kilogram weight class as a freshman. Her goals this year are to win a Canadian national title and then compete in the world championships. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always been a big goal of mine is to attend worlds,â&#x20AC;? Smith said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to wrestle people from across the globe.â&#x20AC;? Away from the mat, Smith is taking health sciences and looking to major in an area in biology, with the ultimate goal of becoming a family physician.

The Maple Ridge Burrards have proven so far this season that they can be a force in the Western Lacrosse Association. Now they need to show – to both opposing teams and themselves – that they can win close games. After an 0-3 start, the Burrards appeared to be headed in the right direction after beating Nanaimo and Langley on June 7 and 9, respectively. But their fortunes took a detour this week, with a 7-6 home floor defeat at the hands of the New Westminster Salmonbellies on Sunday, followed by a 5-4 overtime loss to the Burnaby Lakers Tuesday at Bill Copeland Arena. The back-to-back losses drop the Burrards’ record to 2-5 as they sit tied with Langley and Nanaimo at the bottom of the seven-team WLA. Burrards head coach Chris Gill said in his team’s loss to the league-leading, 6-0 Salmonbellies on Sunday, “we played inconsistent but gave ourselves a chance to tie it up if not win. Our offence needed to to have better decisions with their shots.” Tuesday in Burnaby, the Lakers’ Scott Jones scored three minutes into overtime to lift the home team to victory. The Burrards led 4-3 late in the third period before Burnaby’s Dane Stevens tied the game with 1:06 to go in regulation. Overall, Gill was satisfied with his team’s play versus the Lakers, especially on the back end which he described as “real physical.” “[Goaltender] Frankie [Scigliano] was real good and our defence was strong,” Gill said. “Offensively, we created some great looks early but failed to penetrate the middle as the game went on.” As solid as the Burrards played on Tuesday, the stark reality is, this marked their third onegoal loss this young season. “We need to keep competing and move on,” Gill said. “We have a real strong team with lots of character. We have talked about raising our compete level and limiting our mistakes. Competing in the Western Canada Cup – their last competition of the season – this past weekend in Port Moody, Quantum Gymnastics athletes competed against gymnasts from the four Western Canadian provinces. Madyson Dunster and Claudia Dreswicki took the first medal of the weekend, placing third overall in synchronized trampoline. Quantum also came home with two medals on tumbling, with Tim Freebairn placing first overall in his level and Madyson Dunster placing third in her level. Dunster also took home a fourth place finish in the trampoline. Teagan Gratton recieved medals in both double-mini and trampoline, placing second and third place respectively.
