Poultry and dairy farmers worried about trade deal Supply management key to industry, producers say Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
As negotiations continue on a massive trade deal between Canada and several other pacific countries, dairy and poultry farmers say concessions sought by the United States would upend their industries. The proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) aims to lower trade barriers and increase free trade between 12 countries, including Canada, the U.S., Japan, Mexico and Australia. International Trade Minister Ed Fast – who is also Abbotsford’s MP – is lead-
ing the Canadian delegation. However, several reports suggest that the United States is asking Canada to abandon its supply management system, which guarantees dairy and poultry farmers set prices for their products, which are distributed by marketing boards. Farmers say supply management is vital to their businesses and that altering or abandoning it – thereby opening Canadian markets up to foreign competition – would severely damage the poultry and dairy industries.
On Friday, Reuters, citing anonymous sources, reported that talks had stalled over agriculture trade rules and that the U.S. is considering excluding Canada from the negotiations if it didn’t make “a serious offer on dairy, poultry and agriculture market access.” Ray Nickel, the president of the Abbotsfordbased BC Poultry Association, said producers have been told that supply management “is a high priority and not going to be traded away,” but he added that farmers remain Continued on A3

Local man charged with child luring Explicit images sent to a 12-year-old girl in Utah An Abbotsford man accused of posing online as a 15-yearold boy and sharing pornographic images with a 12-year-old girl in Utah has been charged. Robert Madison Koenig, 22, was arrested last Thursday. A search warrant was then executed on his Abbotsford residence, and Koenig was subsequently charged with child luring and exposing a child to sexually explicit material. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the investigation began in December 2014 after the parents of the girl in Utah found pornographic images and online correspondence from an alleged teen boy from Vancouver. The initial investigation indicated the suspect was actual-
ly a man from Abbotsford, and the major crime unit of the Abbotsford Police Department became involved. MacDonald said the investigation is continuing, and electronics seized from the home will be electronically examined. Koenig is listed online in the 2014-15 roster for University of the Fraser Valley’s men’s volleyball team. He has been released from custody on court conditions that prohibit contact with anyone under 16 years of age. Koenig is also not permitted to be in parks, playgrounds, recreation centres or places that a person under the age of 16 might be expected to be present, and he is prohibited from using a computer to access pornography of any kind.

In more than a decade of sleeping rough, Colleen Aitken helped parents find their sons and daughters, handed out clean needles and condoms, and earned the moniker “Mom” from dozens of homeless friends. She also overdosed on fentanyl-tainted heroin, been hit by a car and escaped a dangerous situation by diving out of a secondstorey window. Such is the life of a homeless woman in Abbotsford, Aitken told B.C. Supreme Court justice Christopher Hinkson during a trial to determine whether the city’s bylaws and policies are unconstitutional. Lawyers affiliated with Pivot Legal Society are suing the city on behalf of the BC/Yukon Drug War Survivors (DWS), a group of homeless activists who say Abbotsford’s bylaws are unconstitutional. They allege that a combination of the city’s bylaws, which prohibit camping in city parks, and a lack of housing options for homeless, put people like Aitken at risk and infringe on their right to security of person. Aitken, 60, was testifying during two days of Supreme Court hearings in Abbotsford at the Super 8 motel last week. She told the court that while she once owned a business – three, in fact – she has been without longterm accommodation for 12 years. In that time, she has met hundreds of others who have lived outside in Abbotsford. Homeless were paid to protest: witness Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News
The founder of a group suing the City of Abbotsford paid people to participate in a demonstration last month, according to testimony last week at a Supreme Court trial to determine whether three city bylaws are unconstitutional. Under cross-examination by a city lawyer, Colleen Aitken confirmed that Barry Shantz, the founder of the Abbotsford

chapter of the Drug War Survivors (DWS), offered money to those who marched down Gladys Avenue to mark the second anniversary of the spreading of chicken manure on an Abbotsford homeless camp. The DWS is currently involved in a legal challenge of City of Abbotsford bylaws that prevent people from camping in parks (see story above). Aitken, who was called as a witness by
Pivot, said “Yes, there was money for the ones who participated,” when queried by city lawyer James Yardley about payments to demonstrate. Aitken called the payments “stipends,” and said “everybody who was there would have done it without [payment].” The trial continues, with Pivot lawyers expected to finish calling evidence by the middle of the week, after which the city will get its turn to call witnesses.

The body of an Abbotsford man who was reported missing May 27 was found on Saturday in Chilliwack. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said Kenneth Berghall, 51, was found deceased near McDonald and Ballam roads, a rural area along the Fraser River. He was found in the 2000 Ford Explorer which investigators had said he was likely driving at the time of his disappearance. MacDonald said a passerby spotted Berghall and then called Chilliwack RCMP. There were no indications of foul play, and an autopsy will be conducted in the coming days, he said. Berghall’s only sibling, Rita Heslop, reported him missing after family members had not heard from him for several days. He had been active on social media on May 20, but otherwise had no contact with family or friends. Video surveillance captured him making a purchase at the Highwayman Pub liquor store at about 4 p.m. that day. Police released photos of a black 2000 Ford Explorer, the vehicle that Berghall often borrowed from a friend, in hopes of aiding in the search. Heslop and her husband, Bruce, held a press conference on June 11, pleading for any information about her brother’s disappearance. At the time, they said the behaviour was out of character for Berghall. They also said Berghall, a heavy-duty mechanic, had no history of mentalhealth concerns.

Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News
The rainbow pride flag was raised at Abbotsford city hall on Monday afternoon – but it may be the last time, after council adopted a policy at a Monday meeting outlining what flags can be raised in the future. A group of about 40 people waited outside Abbotsford city hall and clapped as Mayor Henry Braun raised the flag at about 12:30 p.m. A request had come to council in June, asking that the city fly the rainbow pride flag from July 13 to 20, to coincide with a pride celebration that will run July 17 to 19 at Trethewey House. The events are organized by Out in the Valley, a society that organizes social events for the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) community, and the Fraser Valley Youth Society (FVYS), a nonprofit charitable organization that provides services for LGBTQ+ and allied youth. The decision met with backlash from some community members, who opposed council’s decision to let the flag fly. Samantha Williams, director of operations with FVYS, said at the
thought she was taking heroin, but instead had received a dose of methylfentanyl. Making the drug even riskier is the fact that it did not appear to be mixed with heroin. Users told police that heroin mixed with regular fentanyl was sometimes identifiable by its colour, which changed when the drugs were mixed together.
flag-raising that despite some opposition, they have received a lot of support from around the community. She added that FVYS has had a great relationship with the city while planning pride events over the last three years. “I think the city is sending a message that they’re supporting everyone in their community,” she said. When council made the decision, Braun noted that the city had no policy on what flags can fly at city hall, but one was about 80 per cent developed by staff. At the 3 p.m. executive meeting on Monday, council approved the policy, which sets out criteria for which flags will be raised on the city hall flagpoles in the future. These include the flag of the United Nations; the flag of a country recognized by the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, when an official representative is visiting; a flag of an official sister city; and any flag required to be flown by a contract. The decision precluded a number of requests that came to council on Monday evening, calling for the flying of flags for a number of other interest groups.

They should also consider a “dysfunctional driving” category. A case in point: I was merging onto a major road in town the other day, and as I’m waiting for a clear spot, the following scene unfolds. Passing by is a small car, transporting a mattress – not tied on top, but inside. The driver had fed the mattress into the rear hatch, and rammed it through the interior of the vehicle until it nearly touched the windshield. He then wedged himself into the substantially reduced driver’s seat space. Picture a relatively large man driving along, forehead pushed down nearly to the steering
wheel, as he fought to keep his eyes up on the road, while the mattress weighed down on his head. There are other words besides dysfunctional which could be used to label this genius. Sadly, he’s not alone in his tenacity and limited creativity in overcoming various driving challenges. From my column archives: One winter morning on my way to work, I had another occasion to view a most peculiar, if not mildly disconcerting sight. An oncoming motorist was dealing with a natural phenomenon not uncommon during West Coast winters – namely, condensation on both the outside and inside of the windshield. (There are other such seasonal conditions found out here in Lotusland, known as ice and snow; however, they are increasingly rare, and therefore largely ignorable.)
Anyway, as you might imagine, or perhaps know from firsthand experience, windshield condensation severely restricts the driver’s ability to see through the fogged glass. The effect is dramatically compounded when driving into a rising sun, as was this fellow. His windshield had been transformed into a blindingly bright, opaque rectangle. Sort of like when aliens land on your hood. (Some drivers no doubt have reported the latter to the police when asked to explain the circumstances of their behaviour.) There are remedies for the situation, of course. Obviously, one is to use the defrosting feature found in every vehicle, prior to becoming mobile. This does take planning and time management, since it can require several minutes for the engine to warm the air being blown on the glass. The other solution is to wipe away the condensation, using the manufacturer-sup-

plied wipers externally, and a moistureabsorbent cloth or tissue on the inside. This is only a temporary remedy, since the windshield will rapidly de-fog until it warms up, but certainly better than nothing. However, both courses of action were apparently too time-consuming for this particular motorist. Instead, he was resolutely making his way along with his head out of the open driver’s window. Think of a dog enjoying a car ride, except his tongue wasn’t flapping in the breeze. As you might imagine, the effectiveness of this approach was considerably reduced by the fact that the driver was blinking like an owl on ecstasy, due to the combination of the bitterly cold 50 km/h wind striking his eyeballs, along with direct, searing sunlight. I chose to pull over a lane, just in case he needed the one I was in. I’m not sure how we legislate against dysfunctional – or just plain dumb – driving. Maybe a basic IQ test... Should you wear a mattress on your head while driving? Yes? No? Don’t know? 34375 Gladys Ave., Abbotsford, B.C. V2S 2H5

B.C. tightens Experience New Technology rules for dairy cattle care By Tom Fletcher Black Press
The B.C. government is adopting national standards for care of dairy cattle, a measure called for by the SPCA after a video surfaced showing abuse of cows last year at a Chilliwack farm. The National Dairy Code of Practice covers shelter, feed and water as well as veterinary care and handling practices. It prohibits electric prods, hitting, kicking and shouting when handling cattle. The code also demands that dairy farms recognize the companionship needs of cattle, and that their barns need adequate lighting and non-slip floors. Eight employees of Chilliwack Cattle Sales, Canada’s largest dairy farm, were fired last June after a video showed them beating cows with sticks, chains and rakes. The B.C. Milk Marketing Board lifted its ban on milk purchases from the farm after inspecting its operation and imposing monitoring on it. Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick announced the adoption of the code at a Cloverdale dairy farm Wednesday. He said the specific standards will help industry regulators and judges determine if cruelty to animals has been committed. The SPCA recommended charges of wilfully causing “unnecessary pain, suffering and injury to animals” against the former Chilliwack employees, but Crown prosecutors have not yet decided on whether to proceed. Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer of the B.C. SPCA, praised the adoption of the new code. “We can’t change the past but we can change the present and affect the future,” Moriarty said. “Hopefully we won’t ever see a repeat of what happened last year.” The B.C. SPCA receives an average of 8,800 cruelty complaints a year. About a quarter of those involve farm animals, but most of those involve treatment of horses. Moriarty said complaints about dairy farms are rare. Dave Eto, CEO of the B.C. Dairy Association, said he welcomes whistleblowers such as the employee who captured video of the abuse in Chilliwack. “It’s somewhat self-destructive for a farmer to want to have animal abuse, especially for dairy cows,” Eto said. “An unhappy cow does not produce milk.”

Abbotsford doesn’t have enough facilities to provide shelter and help for the homeless, Ron Van Wyk, the associate executive director Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), told the Supreme Court justice who will determine he constitutionality of the city’s ban on camping in parks and two other bylaws. “The facilities that are there are good facilities, but there are not enough of them,” Van Wyk testified Thursday Van Wyk also told the court that he and his fellow committee members found significant gaps in care for homeless people who are discharged from hospital. “There is no facility, there is no service that can take care of them and provide support on an ongoing basis,” he said. Van Wyk, who served on the Abbotsford Social Development Advocacy Committee (ASDAC), also told the court that recommendations developed by that group between 2006 and 2008 were not taken up by the city. “I can see no evidence that it has been implemented in the sense that it has made a difference to people living chronically homeless in Abbotsford,” he said. It wasn’t until 2014 that the city adopted a homelessness action plan and moved on several recommendations contained within it, Van Wyk said. That was also the year that the city finally “embraced the idea of housing-first,” he said.

Court hears about gaps in care
One year ago, Aitken was crossing the street at a crosswalk when she was hit by a car. The accident seriously hurt her knee and has left her with reduced sight and hearing. Today she uses a leg brace while she awaits a knee replacement. It’s difficult to walk even a few blocks, and Aitken said she spent much of her time over the past year at the Gladys Avenue camp, where she could visit with friends and make the short trek to the food bank. But things are looking up. After more than an hour on the stand, Aitken visibly brightened when asked about her current living conditions. Two weeks ago, she moved into a basement suite provided and paid for by Raven’s Moon Society. The suite was a necessity because having a home was a requirement in order to get her knee replacement. The rent for the room – which she said is quiet and comes complete with a big backyard – is $650, but it is also covered. Aitken said it’s the first time someone has paid her rent. “It’s quite cozy,” she said. “They’ve been very good to me.”

An air quality advisory for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley due to wildfire smoke blowing into the region has been lifted. Lower Mainland residents are breathing easier because of more favourable wind conditions from a change in the weather pattern. “We’ve seen wind coming from a cleaner direction,” said Julie Saxton, an air quality planner for Metro Vancouver. “That wind has been quite strong in places. That has brought us some cleaner air and helped move the smoke out of our area.” The advisory was first issued last Sunday for Metro Vancouver and unprecedented levels of fine particulate three to four times the region’s objective were measured at several test stations over the initial 24 hours. The Fraser Valley was added to the areas under advisory Monday and elevated levels of ground-level ozone were listed as an additional factor starting Wednesday. Saxton said the arrival of cloud and cooler temperatures by Friday also helped stop the generation of groundlevel ozone. Residents can get real-time data on air quality and short-term forecasts online at bcairquality.ca or airmap.ca. Fraser Health spokesperson Tasleem Juma said area hospitals saw higher than usual numbers of patients treated for respiratory difficulties.

Raising funds for Warm Zone The third Connecting C o m m u n i t y , Supporting Women event takes place Thursday, July 23 at Mt. Lehman Winery (5092 Mt. Fishing may be a quiet activity, but learning about the popular pastime isn’t so easy when you can’t hear well. To address that, sign language interpreter Rhys McCormick is teaming with the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery and an organization called Deaf Youth Today
to put on an accessible family fishing event for deaf and hard of hearing children and their parents on July 26. The event will provide interpreters to bridge the communication gap between hatchery staff and participants. Children and their families will learn about local fish and conser-
vation. After a lunch, the day will conclude with hands-on learning and practise of catch-and-release fishing. For more info or to register, email fndc@fndc.ca or dyt@ fndc.ca, call 604-684-1860, or visit www.active.com/orgs/deafyouth-today.

New store benefits community A retail store that recycles building materials and home furnishings, while supporting folks with special needs in our community, has opened for business in Abbotsford. Wood-Knot sells donated gently-used building materials, lumber, refurbished cabinets, bathroom fixtures, appliances — giving customers great value — to raise funds for HOME Society, which supports men and women with learning disabilities or mental health issues in the Fraser Valley to become self-sufficient in nearly 80 locations in the Fraser Valley, mostly in family homes. Wood-Knot also provides meaningful employment opportunities. “Wood-Knot means more than just a great deal on building supplies,” HOME Society executive director Cam Doré said. “The store gives some of our folks and those from other agencies an opportunity
to play a role in our community and give back to society, just like everyone else. They can volunteer alongside others doing pickups, deliveries, restoring furniture or helping our customers.” Store manager Mike Cecil, a building industry veteran, says Wood-Knot gives its customers good value in a safe and clean environment. “We believe in restore, reuse and recycle and along with our customers we make it happen every day,” Cecil said. “It’s a winwin-win-win: we keep products out of the landfill, customers get a great deal, it provides meaningful work opportunities, and we raise funds for HOMES.” Cecil has a special place in his heart for the young men and women supported by HOMES and other agencies that work at Wood-Knot. Honda Way to occupy new space Honda Way is getting some new digs. The latest addition to the Fraser Valley Auto Mall will be a 33,000-sq.ft. lot located by the east entrance, just off Mt. Lehman exit. The new space will be nearly three times the size of Honda Way’s current facility, allowing for an upgrade on the number of service bays as well as greater showroom space. With the expansion, the dealership’s general
manager Brian Choo said a boost in employment is expected, specifically more technicians and salespeople. “We have seen Abbotsford grow and are happy to see this growth,” Choo said. “This is a prime piece of property with great visibility.” A ground-breaking ceremony was held last month, with an expected completion date in May 2016, according to Choo.

Toddler doing well two years after transplant Lily Hague-Wautier, 2, survives near-fatal liver disease Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
In 2013, a liver disease left baby Lily HagueWautier of Abbotsford on the brink of death, with a transplant being her only hope. She received that transplant from her mom, Hailey Wautier, who had 22 per cent of her liver (which has since regenerated) removed for the procedure. Lily also received blood vessels from a deceased donor. The two-year anniversary of the surgery takes place on Aug. 22, and Hailey reports that Lily is doing remarkably well. “She has successfully managed to get by with not a single admission for anything to the hospital – any sickness or step back with the transplant,” Hailey said. Lily currently takes two medications, which
Lily Hague-Wautier, 2, is now doing remarkably well after having had liver transplant surgery almost two years ago. she will be on for the rest of her life, compared to the 13 she was taking when she left the hospital after her transplant. Hailey said Lily has since caught up with all of the developmental milestones with which she had fallen behind during her illness, and is in the 90th percentile for her height and weight. She is almost talking

in full sentences. “Her doctors and team that see her at transplant clinic appointments regularly are amazed at how well she is doing and how well she caught up to being a regular toddler.” The News first reported Lily’s story in December 2013, when she was 11 months old. She was born on Jan. 5, 2013 with a liver disease called biliary atresia, which had progressed to a critical state by March of that year. Doctors told Hailey
and her spouse Mark Hague that Lily would likely survive only three more months without a transplant. Lily was placed on the waiting list for a deceased donor, but a new procedure and different protocols in Toronto enabled Lily’s parents to be considered as possible donors there. Hailey’s surgery was performed at Toronto General Hospital, and her liver was placed in a container and walked across the way through an underground tunnel to be transplanted into Lily at the Hospital for Sick Children. Hailey said Lily is now doing so well that, when looking at her, it’s impossible to tell that she was ever that sick. “Lily continues to amaze me and is one very special toddler,” she said. This story was published with an incorrect photo and caption in the July 10 edition of The News.

The Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley, an annual fundraising event for pediatric cancer research, has openings for guest riders wishing to join in on the 800-kilometre trek that runs from Sept. 24 to Oct. 2. With a minimum $2,500 fundraising commitment, riders can secure a place in the peloton for a day. There are a limited number of spots. Claypool commits to Notre Dame Brandon KOSTINUK Abbotsford News
After a bidding war that saw some of the biggest American football programs vie for his services, Abbotsford Senior Secondary star receiver Chase Claypool announced Friday he will suit up for the iconic Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Claypool, who is entering his senior year, had been offered spots at more than a dozen football programs but decided Brian Kelly’s Notre Dame squad was the place for him, and chose to broadcast his verbal commitment on ESPN U. The 6’5” athlete was hailed as a “four-star” recruit and touted as the top high school football prospect from Canada for the class of 2016. Claypool brings a degree of versatility, capable of playing as a receiver as well as on the defensive side in the linebacker position. In addition, his size and receiving talent make him a possibility at the tight end position. Claypool made his announcement before The Opening, a Nikesponsored showcase held in Oregon for top high school football players. “This whole recruiting process has been a blessing really, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, but I want to further my education and

football career at the University of Notre Dame,” Claypool said, as he donned a Notre Dame cap. Abbotsford senior football coach Jay Fujimara said he thought Claypool made a good decision. His goal, said Fujimara, was twofold, to land at an institution that had strong academics as well as a football program where he could find the best opportunity. Notre Dame seemed to fit both bills.
pitched to him through a mutual friend, and that he was impressed with his meeting with offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock. “I connected with him on a personal level and I thought that was really good,” said Claypool. A verbal commitment is a non-binding agreement between the athlete and institution. Claypool must still receive and sign a National Letter of Intent from Notre Dame to formally end the recruiting process.
The school is ranked No. 16 in overall academics across all American universities according to U.S. News & World Report. “Notre Dame scouted Chase as an athlete,” said Fujimara. They are looking for a big wide receiver but the possibility for Claypool to play on defence is also there, explained Fujimara. Oregon and the University of Michigan were schools also at the top of Claypool’s list but he told ESPN that Notre Dame was

who attended were treated to small sessions with each Blue Jays great in specific areas of focus, or, in the case of Alomar, a minibaseball game where he pitched and offered playful comments and encouragement. “This is great for the game and for the kids,” Alomar told The News. “It made me remember playing baseball as a kid.” Alomar had spent a couple of days at the Okotoks, Alta. camp, which ran concurrently to Abbotsford’s, before traveling further west. “It was definitely cooler there,” he said with a laugh, as he wiped sweat from his brow. Bush, who was present all three days of the camp last week, said the kids settled in quickly after the opening day. “The first day was the sniff test,” he said, jokingly. The kids were a little shy at first but after some time, they loosened up, Bush said.
“It’s really been good the last two days. The thing that’s important is that they are listening and apply what you’re saying,” said Bush, who was pleased with everyone’s participation at his station at second base. White, who operated the batting drill, was also impressed by the level of play. “In B.C. so far we’ve seen some good young players. You can tell they’re coached well,” said White, adding, “focus and concentration is there, which shows you they’re students of the game.” Parent Christie Fehlauer, whose son Brady, 12, was participating in the Jays Super Camp for the first time, said it’s been great. “The [players] are talking, chatting it up with them which adds to the experience,” said Christie. Brady said Alomar was his favourite at camp, as did a number of other players. Many said they hope to return next year.

Douglas, Canada win gold in rugby sevens event Men’s second consecutive Pan Am Games title Abbotsford’s Justin Douglas and the 12man Canadian men’s rugby sevens team secured gold on Sunday, July 12 at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. Canada narrowly defeated Argentina in the gold medal contest, 2219, after a last-second try from Harry Jones pushed the men’s team ahead. To get to this point, Canada took on Chile in the quarterfinal round and secured a close sudden-death, extra-time victory, 1712. In the semi-finals, the Canadians then faced a U.S. team that had beaten them last month in the finals of the NACRA Sevens Olympic qualifying tournament. But, on home soil, Canada was able to
serve up some retribution overcoming the Americans, 26-19 to reach the gold medal game. On the first day of the event, in front of a passionate home crowd, Canada raced out to a 45-0 victory over Guyana and a 26-14 win over Brazil, before falling to Argentina
21-7 in their pool finale. Douglas notched tries in the games against Brazil and Argentina. This is the men’s second consecutive title as they also clinched gold in Guadalajara in 2011. The men’s national team will now look to gear up for the 2015 World Rugby Pacific
Nations Cup, which runs July 18 to Aug. 3 and will feature Tier 2 nations Fiji, Japan, Samoa, Tonga and the U.S. The Canadian women also managed the top podium spot in their inaugural event making rugby sevens a hallmark success for the host nation.
The Canadian men’s team took home their second consecutive gold at the Pan Am Paige Stewart Photo Games with their 22-19 victory over Argentina, Sunday, July 12.

off. The Canadians will face Mexico in their tournament opener on Friday, July 17 and will then go up against Puerto Rico July 19 and the U.S., July 21. The volleyball event runs until July 26. Other national teams competing in the event are Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, and Colombia. In the 2011 Pan Am
Games, the Canadian men’s team finished last in their group and sixth overall with a 1-2 record. Brazil claimed gold against Cuba, and Argentina secured the bronze. Marshall has been taking on a greater role with the Canadian men’s team, most recently in the FIVB Volleyball World League 2015.
Marshall first tasted action with the Canadian squad against Bulgaria in May, notching five points and one block on three attempts. Marshall then exploded against Argentina in Canada’s second game against the South American squad, notching a team-high 20 points, winning 17 spikes on
33 attempts and two blocks in a losing endeavour. The outside hitter followed up with strong performances through June, against Bulgaria, and secured a team high in points in both games against Cuba. The ex-Trinity Western volleyballer then topped the team in points once more versus Argentina.

Women take the silver Abbotsford’s Alexa Tielmann and the Canadian women’s water polo team fell to the Australians in the gold medal match at the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea, on Monday July 13. The two teams were tied at three after four periods of play, leaving the game to be decided by a penalty shootout. Kelly McKee, Axelle Crevier and Kyra Christmas all had their shots saved by Australian goalkeeper, Lilian Hedges. Australia netted three of their four attempts to claim victory, 6-3. The silver medal ending is an improvement on Canada’s fourth-place finish at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia.

DID YOU KNOW?
Air and water can get into the A/C system which can reduce the efficiency of the system and can also lead to corrosion or fungus, mould and bacterial growth that is blown into the passenger area.
THIS IS WHAT WE CAN DO... To complete the HVAC service a
technician will clean out the air conditioning lines, evaporator and ventilator and then kill any bacteria mould or fungi. Then deodorize the entire A/C system and the vehicles interior. Finally, after a complete inspection for leaks and wear, the technician will measure and replenish the oil in the compressor. The air inside your vehicle will be much cleaner and 4 to 5 degrees cooler, thanks to increased efficiency.
