Residents of the Woodburn Mobile Home Park were at their windows late Saturday afternoon watching as multiple police vehicles and an ambulance attended one of the homes before a search of the area took place. A 48-year-old male, according to RCMP, had illegally entered a residence at the trailer park and assaulted the resident with an undisclosed weapon. “We received a call at about 5:20 about a suspected break and enter and assault at a residence in the 2700 block of Woodburn Road,” said Cpl. Gordon Hay of the Campbell River RCMP. “The suspect was located upon search of the area and taken into custody. The victim was transported to hospital, treated and released.” The nature of those injuries was not disclosed. The suspect was released after charges were laid for break and enter and assault with a weapon, Hay said, and will appear in court at a later date. Hay said that while the emergency response may have looked especially large to those nearby, it was just a matter of protocol, and the public should not use the level of response to assume the severity of an incident. “We send all available personnel when we get a call of that nature,” he said. Hay wouldn’t comment on whether that particular residence is known to be troublesome. Hay did, however, confirm that the victim and suspect are known to each other and it was not a random attack. – Mike Davies/Campbell River Mirror

Quicksilver gets LNG export licence Kristen Douglas
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
There’s now one less hurdle for Quicksilver Resources Canada to go through in its attempt to export Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) from its Discovery LNG site in Campbell River. Last week, Quicksilver’s application for an export licence was approved by the National Energy Board. The licence is good for 25 years and allows Quicksilver to export natural gas with a maximum term quantity of 733 billion cubic metres. The board, in coming to its decision, considered that the amount of LNG to be exported by Quicksilver would not be a detriment to the country’s needs. “The NEB (National Energy Board) has determined that the quantity of gas proposed to be exported by Quicksilver is surplus to Canadian needs,” according to a release. “The NEB is sat-

It’s not every day that your credit card purchase is paid for you. But that’s what happened to Campbell River resident Wayne Gareau. In May, Gareau (pictured above) entered to win his purchase from Mad Man McKay, a home electronics retailer. Gareau made his winning purchase from Mad Man McKay’s Campbell River location, as part of CitiFinancial Retail Services’ ‘Spring in Your Step Win Your Purchase’ contest where participants entered to win the value of their purchase from partner retailers to a maximum of $5,000. Gareau’s name was randomly drawn from 44,518 entrants from across Canada. He won a motorcycle stereo, priced at $1,357.47. Gareau received his cheque last Thursday morning.

Letters ● There’s no Litter Fairy at Elk Falls, folks Kudos to everyone who made the suspension bridge at Elk Falls possible. It is a fantastic addition to the many attractions we have here in Campbell River. The hard work that went into erecting the bridge and fencing and wheelchair friendly access is there for all to see. It’s just a pity some people have no respect for the wonderful setting. I’m referring to those who before they arrive grab a coffee or some other beverage to carry down to the falls but who having consumed the contents then leave the cups/bottles littered along the walkways. I know it’s uphill on the walk back but are these individuals so weak they cannot carry the empty cups etc back with them to the parking lot and dispose of them in the garbage bins that are there? Who do they think cleans up their mess, the litter fairy? Jane Davies Campbell River

Weekend brought a small blessing from the sky On Saturday morning I woke up to a puzzling sound. But after intently listening for a minute or two, the ‘tap, tap, tapping’ was unmistakeable. Rain! Normally, waking up to the sound of rain on a Saturday morning would dampen my mood but right now, we can use all the rain we can get. It’s been so long since we had a good drenching that I almost forgot what it feels like to be out in the rain. And though the rain decided to come on the weekend, I was glad to see it – even if it did ruin my plans to hike the Ripple Rock Trail. Figuring that it might be hard to hike in our gum boots, we changed course and went on a shopping excursion to Nanaimo where the rain was all the rage and the talk of the town. And for good reason. We haven’t had any significant rainfall for nearly two months. As a result, the tinder-dry conditions have seen 251 active wildfires ignited as of last Sunday, and homes have been lost. COMMENT Kristen Douglas
To paraphrase Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz … water and power and fire, oh my! Unlike Dorothy’s fears of walking through the unknown and creepy forest, the fear of forest fires, of power outages and water shortages are only too real this summer for citizens of the Fraser Valley. Hot dry weather has the province raising a flag on water usage, B.C. Hydro expressing concern about power usage across the province and the Coastal Fire Centre declaring a total ban on campfires. Taken together, it all sounds a bit apocalyptic. But we haven’t reached the end of times just yet – these are necessary precautions being taken by those in positions of authority. Here in Campbell River we’re fortunate that we’re still only in stage one watering restrictions. Thanks to what the city is calling a marked diligence by residents in conserving water, we’ve yet to enter stage two watering restrictions. Under stage one, residents are restricted to watering their lawns only on certain days of the week. Odd numbered houses can water on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and even numbered houses can water between those same times but on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Are these measures inconvenient? Maybe a little. However, a few simple restrictions may prove to have a huge impact down the road. Perhaps it is time to take notice of these times, when our systems are being pressed to the limit and wonder what it might be like in years to come, when severe restrictions are placed on power and water as a routine measure. Are we ready to handle an extreme shortage for any serious length of time?Sure, conserving a few drops of water here and there might not seem like a lot, but those drops add up fast. And developing a conservationist attitude now, both as individuals and as a community, is the path to ensuring there will be resources available for our grandchildren. -Black Press

But help is on the way. A contingent of firefighters from Australia arrived this week to help fight the flames and the Mars water bomber, based in Port Alberni, will be coming out of retirement after the B.C. government last week signed a one-month contract to use the aircraft. While the Mars is yet to be tasked with a specific mission, hopefully there’s some peace of mind in knowing it’s there as an option. In the meantime, I’m hoping for the best for our firefighters, crossing my fingers for more rain, and praying that no more homes are destroyed. It’s been a hot, dry summer and it only just begun three and a half weeks ago. We still have more than nine weeks left of a summer that meteorologists have predicted to be drier than normal with above average temperatures. So, let’s all do our part and think twice about where you’re dropping that cigarette, and respect the fire ban which applies to both campfires and beach fires. So far we’ve been lucky in Campbell River; let’s keep it up and don’t be a firestarter.

Strata residents irked by ‘disgraceful’ city-owned property Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR
The strata council of a downtown complex wants the city to clean up its mess. Beverley Ebert, secretary of the strata at Pacific Plaza, said the council is concerned about an adjoining, cityowned property to the north of their building. Ebert, in a letter to city council which is a matter of public record, said the
property is “a fire hazard and a disgrace to the area.” The city property in question is an empty lot full of bushes and tree branches at 325 Beech Street. Pacific Plaza, which is off to the side of City Hall, is next door. Ebert said in her letter that the property has been neglected and is an eyesore. “Trees and branches have been cut down over the years and the
remains have been left on the bank for junk to accumulate and pose a threat to our homes,” Ebert wrote. She also offered to have the strata council directors meet with city council to show them the condition of the site. C o u n c i l re c e i v e d Ebert’s letter at its July 6 meeting and Coun. Charlie Cornfield said he was under the impression that the Beech site had been dealt with.
“I thought that we had budgeted for this area to be cleaned up and brushed out in last year’s budget,” Cornfield said. Dave Morris, the city’s manger of facilities and supplies, said he wasn’t aware that that was the case. “That is not my recollection but we can look into this and get back to council either in a report or on a bulletin item for further action,” Morris said.
City gets better than three-for-theprice-of-one deal for back up power Generators approved for Sportsplex, Community Centre, City Hall Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR
Council was happy to learn at its last meeting that the city will get emergency back-up power for more facilities than it had bargained for. Council, during 2015 financial planning in Februar y, budgeted $365,000 for a single portable generator and independent switches at three city-owned buildings. Dave Morris, the city’s general manager of facilities and supplies, told council at its July 6 meeting that after staff put out a Request for Proposals, it became apparent the city would be able to get more for its dollar than originally thought. “As it turns out, the market was much more competitive and we were able to get all three buildings permanently serviced for well under the $365,000 budget,”
Morris said. Using Apple Electric Ltd., council will be able to install emergency generators at City Hall, the Community Centre and the Sportsplex for $285,277. Coun. Larry Samson, who sits on the city’s safety committee, said he’s pleased all three facilities will have their own generators. “It’s been a priority of the public safety subcommittee to have emergency back-up power to our facilities,” Samson said. “With City Hall being our emergency operations centre, it’s crucial for our operations centre to have such a back-up in emergency power. This really is good news. I want to thank staff for coming back with this.” Clinton Crook, the city’s senior buyer, said after council approved the budget for a single generator, staff real-
ized that simply using switches for the other facilities to piggy-back off the one generator could pose difficulties. “It became apparent that acquiring an on-site generator at each building provided a much better solution due to the differing voltages at each building and the requirement for the portable generator to be able to operate on those voltages,” Crook said. “Connecting a portable generator in a power outage would also require a ticketed electrician to be on site and only support emergency power at a single building, providing a limited level of service in a major blackout. For these reasons, staff opted to tender the
Cornfield said he would be glad to get back some more information. “I thought there was some work to be done there, so if staff were to bring back a report that would be great,” Cornfield said. From time to time, staff do bring reports

occurs on both sides of the generating station, so that excess water at any point in the process doesn’t overwhelm the system or flow anywhere it shouldn’t. At the next stop, Head Surveyor Jim Allen welcomed people to a booth back near where they got off the busses, in front of the entrance to the service tunnel, where he pointed to specific areas on the project drawings that people were still interested in, and answered questions about depth of drilling, slopes and spacial relationships between sections. The public was then shuttled up the hill to the Interpretative Centre and upper parking lot, where there was a barbecue happening courtesy of SaveOn Foods – with proceeds going to Campbell River Kinsmen – rides up into the trees in BC Hydro bucket trucks, periodic puppet shows by the staff of the Museum at Campbell River, and various kiosks from organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, North Island Employment Foundations Society and BC Parks and Recreation. After the event, Watson said they saw “just over 1,000 people,” take the buses from downtown out to the facility, “and considering the weather and it being the first of these, I thought the support was really great,” and he’s looking forward to next year’s event, which he hopes will see even more community members take advantage of the tours. For more information on the project or to check out the monthly updates from BC Hydro on the project’s progress, head over to BCHydro.com/ johnhart. There is also a new animated video about the project that, “clarifies a few things about the project in a really nice, easy to understand way,” according to Watson. That video is on display both at the Interpretative Centre at the top of the hill and at the website. The monthly update reports are also available at majorprojects.ca.

very critical part of our history and it’s getting more and more important to preserve the memory of the men and women that all Legions represent.” It also puts a lot of money into the community by supporting the likes of the Food Bank, Knights of Columbus, Cadets, as well as a host of other local causes. Ten Times Bigger is a local cover band that for over 10 years now have been entertaining Vancouver Island with music from the last six decades. DEATHS
INFORMATION
Born March 10, 1948
It is with profound sadness that Merle Peterson of Campbell River announces the death of his beloved wife of 43 years; Elaine Peterson.
Raymond (Ray) Archer passed away on June 28, 2015 at the age of 84 of ailments arising from a longstanding case of multiple sclerosis. Ray always sought to serve the common good, chiefly by treating every individual with respect regardless of his or her station in life. He worked effectively with others on several local committees until his later years. He was particularly active on the Executive of the Multiple Sclerosis Support Group. Ray was born in 1931 in Lethbridge, Alberta to Mary and Racy Archer. He received his early schooling in Lethbridge and had his first employment there. In 1956 he enrolled in Bethel Bible College in Saskatoon, earning a Diploma in Theology. His future wife, Lorraine Kemp of Winnipeg, was a classmate. Upon graduating in 1959, Ray entered the University of Alberta. Ray and Lorraine married in 1960 and their first two children, Alison and Raymond, were born in the following three years. During this time, Ray completed his undergraduate studies, earning a B.A. (Hons.) in Philosophy. In 1963 Ray and his family moved to Houston, Texas where he entered graduate studies at Rice University, earning a PhD in Philosophy. A third child, Keith, was born in Houston. The family returned to Canada in 1966 where Ray joined the faculty of the University of Regina. While at the University of Regina, he served for a time as Head of the Department of Philosophy and Classics and later as Dean of Student Services. He and his family lived in Regina for 25 years. Ray retired from university in 1991 and moved with Lorraine to Campbell River. In 1955, at the age of 24 and while still living in Lethbridge, Ray began showing symptoms which were not identified until 1975, twenty years later, as the onset of multiple sclerosis. The long delay in getting a diagnosis was actually beneficial, for as it turned out the disease advanced very slowly, permitting Ray to study, marry, raise his family and work as a university faculty member for twentyfive years. Had he had a diagnosis at the onset he might have ventured less, he thought.
Anyone wishing to give special recognition to Ray’s passing is requested to make a donation to the Campbell River Hospital Foundation.

Neil David Stewart
22, Dec. 1955 – 5, July 2015 Sadly, we announce the passing of Neil David Stewart, age 59, at his home in Campbell River. He was a good and honest man, sharp, compassionate, hardworking and polite. He was social but reserved, and a keen judge of character. Neil grew up in East Van and graduated high school. After a stint as a clerk for CP Rail and a job in accounting at Woodward’s, Neil began his foray into the food business, partnering to own and operate SMC of Richmond. Amicable split years later led him to the aquaculture industry. His astute business sense and work ethic resulted in an opportunity to relocate to CR. He survived many mergers and acquisitions to finally retire in 2011 with Marine Harvest. Neil loved to cook. His other leisure pursuits included kayaking, gardening, cycling, traveling and tai chi, to name a few. Twice he realized his dream to participate in the “European Delivery Program of a new BMW. Neil was predeceased by his parents, Dave and Emily Stewart, father-in-law Konrad Staub, brother-in-law Dusty. He is survived by brothers Doug (Gloria) and John (Verna); cousins Steve Reed (Pam), Margaret Eisenhardt (Jon), Bruce Murray (Sue), motherin-law Elfie Staub, brother-in-law Hardy Staub(Annie) and their families. He is lovingly remembered by his spouse of 28 years, Monika. Neil wanted no formal service. An open house in his memory will be held at the family home on Tuesday, July 21, 2-7 pm. Most recently, Neil served as a volunteer on the board of the Campbell River Hospital Foundation. A donation to this cause would be appreciated. We express sincere gratitude for the care Neil received at BCCA, VGH, Royal Jubilee Hospital, CR Hospital and with the BC Palliative Care program.

MusicFest ignores the rain
Rain and showers couldn’t dampen enthusiasm for the Va n c o u v e r I s l a n d MusicFest at the Comox Valley Exhibition Grounds last weekend as (clockwise from above) headliners like Lyle Lovett and his Large Band put on a stellar performance; Islanders were introduced to new acts like the Texmaniacs; welcomed back old friends like David Essig; and didn’t let the rain stop them from enjoy gifted artists like Mary Flower.

of the entertainment at the Arts Festival later that year. Over 100 people took up a paint brush and left their mark on the piano. The following year, another piano was donated and again, was painted at the Arts Festival. Both pianos have been and continue to be enjoyed by locals and visitors. The pianos are moved from business to business, from event to event. Special supports were built for the pianos to help with stability and ease of movement.
However, the second piano is extremely heavy and has broken one of the support wheels. It takes two men to manouevre. The BIA needs a smaller, lighter piano. Now the BIA wants to know if anyone has a piano in good working condition they would like to donate. The BIA would be happy to pick it up. If possible, they would like to have the piano for the July 25 Arts Festival. Call or email Jan Wade at (250) 287-8642 or janpwade@outlook. com.

Ravens rock into provincial final; secure silver J.R. RARDON CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The Campbell River Ravens peewee lacrosse team started the 2015 seemingly lost on the wrong end of a series of lopsided scores. But by last weekend the Ravens had found just where they belonged — in the B.C. provincial championship final. The peewees returned with silver medals after a close-fought, 4-2 loss to Kamloops in the provincial Peewee C championship final at Maple Ridge Sunday. The Ravens used goals by Owen Wellard and Taylor Lynse in a thirdperiod rally to trim a 3-0 deficit and were pushing hard for the tying score when Kamloops slipped behind the attack for an insurance goal with a minute remaining. “In the third period we were all over them,” Ravens coach Jason Wellard said. “Either team could have won; it was a fun game.” The Ravens opened the season slotted in the Peewee ‘B’ tier despite having six first-year players and six more in just their second season of lacrosse. “ The way tiering works, there’s a mathematical equation based on kids’ years of experi-

ence,” said Welland. “In the B division you’re supposed to have three to five years of experience. We were put into B when on paper we’re a C team.” A third of the way into the season, Vancouver Island Minor Box Lacrosse caught on to the weekly poundings the Ravens were taking, and dropped the peewees into the C division. They responded immediately by going on an extended unbeaten streak, and qualified for the provincial berth by winning the
Island C title. “I think one of the main reasons for our success was playing that ‘B’ experience,” Wellard said. “All of our first-year kids experienced a much higher level of lacrosse than they would have playing in C. “Sure, it was difficult, and we paid for every mistake we made. But we learned from those mistakes.” C a mp b e l l R i v e r ’s Ke n ny S w e e t w a s awarded the provincial tourney MVP trophy,
selected by the coaches in the tier, but Jason Wellard said everybody played a role. “Of the 17 runners we had on the roster, 11 of them scored,” the coach said. “It’s not like it’s a single person winning it for us. It was a big team effort.” Three different players posted hat tricks in a tournament game, and for both Lynse and Owen Wellard it was their first career hat trick. Sweet had the other. Goalie Erik “The Wall”
Forbes managed the only shutout in 60-plus games of Peewee championship play in the AA, A, B and C classifications with his 11-0 blanking of West Kootenay. Brandon B ab co ck scored his first goal of the season on a strong individual effort play, Eran Hamer had multiple goals in the team’s first two pool games, and Tyler Wingert was presented the Warrior Sportsmanship Award. “This team is the most coachable team I’ve ever
coached,” said Wellard, who was assisted by Andrew McNeilly, Todd Forbes and Derrick Wingert. The Ravens breezed to a 3-0 record in pool play Friday and Saturday to claim the top seed, opening with a 5-3 win over Delta before beating Mission 10-5 and blasting West Kootenay 11-0. The peewees parlayed stout defence and goalkeeping into a 5-1 semifinal victory over Ridge Meadows to earn a berth in the final. Sweet was named the Ravens’ game MVP in the semifinal, but promptly turned and
handed it to Forbes in recognition of his work in goal. “He really felt what our goalie had done for us was a little overlooked,” Wellard said. Sweet, Lysne and Kennady Fisher — the only girl on the team — each earned game MVP awards in round-robin play, and Owen Wellard was selected in the championship final. The team also included Andrew Van Dyck, Cole McIntosh, Dylan Kelly, Jas Thiara, Jordon Ernst, Joseph Marks, Levi Nichols, Nic La Pierre, Ty McNeilly and Wyatt Surgenor.
Saratoga Speedway succumbs to serious soaking A hot, parched Vancouver Island finally got some relief Saturday when Mother Nature bestowed her showers upon much of the region. For Saratoga Speedway, however, the deluge was greeted more like a “gift” from Medusa.
After 38 straight racing events with clear skies at the track, Round 3 of Drifting and Drag Racing was washed away due to the inclement weather conditions. Saratoga Speedway invites all drivers and fans to mark Sept. 12 on their calendars ■ ■ ■ ■
for the final round of Drifting and Drag Racing. Extra laps … Next weekend Saratoga welcomes back the Wilroc Lite Sprint cars. Three weeks ago a record field of 17 cars took to the track, and all 17 are expected back this
weekend to join the Hornet cars, Roadrunners, Bomber cars and Motorcycles on the card. … The highly regarded Monster Truck show is fast approaching. August 1-2 will see three high-flying monster trucks tear up Saratoga Speedway. The youngest
female monster truck driver in the world will be featured in the lineup; 16-year-old Rosalee Ramer will pilot her truck Wild Flower in her first appearance in British Columbia. Time Flyes and Tow Monster will also be at the Speedway for the first time,
looking to leave a big impression on a sellout crowd. … The Hornet cars, Roadrunners and the Crash to Pass cars will join the Monster Trucks, with Columbia Fuels sponsoring the fun on Saturday, and Thrifty Foods on Sunday.
