Herbs have much to offer in nutritional value and are an ideal addition to a healthy diet. Nourishing herbs should be consumed regularly as they offer a rich assortment of minerals, vitamins and phytochemicals which promote good health and healing. Mineral rich herbs help to replete iron stores, build strong bones, and give strength to hair, skin and nails. Herbs high in B vitamins help to buffer stress, improve mood and energy. Herbs containing magnesium promote muscle relaxation and restorative sleep. Nourishing teas are especially important at times of increased nutrient demands such as pregnancy, breastfeeding and convalescence. The simple act of preparing a cup of tea can be beneficial as a ritual of self-care. It is important that we nurture ourselves! Using herbs also helps to connect us to nature. Growing herbs in your garden or wild harvesting helps you to get in touch with the qualities of the plants and fully appreciate the medicine that they have to offer. Preparing a nourishing tea/infusion is a great way to start incorporating herbal medicine into your daily life. This will provide benefit for the whole family. Stock your kitchen with a basic supply of organic, loose, dried herbs. I hope to provide you with some inspiration, here are some of my favorites: Nettle: Rich in iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin K, selenium, zinc and potassium. at the mic MIKE DELAMONT

@mikedelamont

About a month ago the call went out that SiriusXM was looking for comedians to compete in this year’s Top Comic Competition. Hundreds of hopeful comics send in their tapes. Last year I sent in mine and didn’t hear a thing. But this year I heard back, they wanted me to audition! While winning the whole thing, walking away with a truck load of cash and a guaranteed gala performance at Just For Laughs in 2016 is a huge carrot for any comedian, for me it was really cool to just be included in the auditions. I haven’t been in the stand up game for long, so it’s always really amazing for me when folks give me a chance. We were told that we would be doing five minute sets along with 11 other folks at a comedy club in Vancouver and from there only three would go on to Watch for Victoria comic Mike Delamont on the finals. I’m Just For Laughs All Access on the Comedy more of a story Network on Aug 29!

LAST CALL To ArTiSTS

teller comedian so five minutes isn’t very much. I picked what I was going to do and practiced it until I got a relaxed and easy delivery down to about fourand-a-half minutes. Stress can kill a performance, so you try to be prepared. The night came. I flew to Vancouver in the afternoon, did a bit of shopping, saw a movie and tried to not think about the contest. At 7pm I went and drew a number for when I would go on stage. Number 10. I liked it. After nervously eating a bit of dinner, I made my way back to the club. The back stage, filled with nervous comedians, was uncomfortably hot with no air conditioning. The host was funny and friendly and started bringing up comedians. The first comedian was funny. Stupidly funny. Confident, easy, and hilarious. Now, you might think that would make you nervous, but it kinda pulls you out of it for a moment. When that guy started getting huge laughs, my brain just said: “Well if that guy doesn’t win, then this whole thing is rigged!” I knew that he would make it into the final three the moment he walked off stage (and he did!) Comedian after comedian went up to try and impress the crowd.

I don’t know if she knows how intimidating the power she wields is, but she is so kind and honest, and very generous with her time and puts you at ease so quickly you forget about it almost instantly. When you’re on stage you don’t think about any of this though. You think: “Don’t flub the setup, Don’t stumble over any words, and DON’T BOMB!” I’ve had shows where I bombed, but I did pretty well at this audition. The audience liked me and so did the judges. At the end of the night – I didn’t win. The moment that they call the last name and it’s not yours: I had this moment where I filled with anger, sadness, frustration and then it all went away in the blink of an eye. The reality is, I had fun and I enjoyed myself. In the world of stand up I am a relative nobody, so I was happy to be considered at all for the show. I love making people laugh, and for some strange turn of fate, I have been able to make it my full time profession for the last three years. I didn’t win this year – but there is always next year

ooted in the community for 160 years, the Six Mile Pub is revered as the oldest pub in BC. “Every pioneering community needed a schoolhouse, a church and a pub,” says owner David Wong. “We were – and are – the pub the community built!” They take the role seriously, crafting foods and serving products THE OLDEST PUB that are clean, healthy and sustainable. They also support and sponsor sports and educational groups so it’s only natural that they say: “Our food, like our friendships are real and enduring, full of flavours and textures.” Outside the iconic Island Highway location, you are greeted by the sight of an authentic British phone booth. The interior of the Six Mile Pub is warm and inviting, the walls lined with rich, dark wood, rugged hardwood floors, ceiling beams and architectural details crafted by artisans from a bygone era. And just like the days of yore, they use real ingredients: organic, Ocean-Wise, hormone-free, antibiotic-free as much as possible and practical. These ingredients are skilfully crafted using age-old techniques – you won’t find a microwave oven in this kitchen! Sauces, dressings, pastas are skilfully prepared on site. Meats, cheeses and vegetables are smoked, hams brined and smoked, and sauerkraut and vegetables pickled right there in the pub’s kitchen. The beautiful property is located on the bank of Millstream which flows into Esquimalt Harbour. Centrally located within the Westshore, next to the Galloping Goose Regional Trail and the arterial Island Highway, the Six Mile Pub has served generations of Victorians. The menu features several Signature Dishes including Crab Cake, Spiral Artichoke and Roasted Mushroom Lasagne, Fish & Chips in Signature Gluten Free Batter, Ancient Grain Salad, Homemade Espresso Soaked Flourless Chocolate Mousse Cake and South of Heaven Apple Cobbler. Ingredients are sourced responsibly and thoughtfully

s r a e y 0 6 1 s e t a r Celeb and include herbs and vegetables from the Six Mile’s own culinary garden and apiary. Because menu items are prepared on-site with whole ingredients, the culinary team is able to adapt recipes easily to accommodate special dietary needs. The pub is endorsed by the Celiac Scene which recognizes the multiple precautions they take to ensure their members’ health and safety. “Foremost, our chefs craft excellent, quality food, and if it enhances the flavour and texture to do so, they also incorporate our research and techniques to make these products gluten-free,” says Wong. The bar features a selection of 22 draught beers including craft-brewed ales and lagers from local, artisan breweries, including a house lager sourced from Stanley Park Brewery, Canada’s first sustainable brewery. Wong and his professional staff invite you to walk, bike, drive or paddle to the Six Mile Pub - she will delight you. Join the staff at the Six Mile Pub, 494 Island Highway at Six Mile Road, during the month of July as they celebrate their 160th anniversary. Intrepid Theatre launches OUTstages LAURA LAVIN editor@mondaymag.com Anthony Johnston and Nathan Schwartz have been together so long they finish each other’s sentences. Like many couples, they bicker, they banter and they write violent, heterophobic rap songs together – OK, not everyone does that last thing. The self-proclaimed gay/straight best friends duo, who met in theatre school as teenagers, have been together since, creating chaotic, creepy and thought provoking theatre for their company AnimalParts. “We met in Vancouver’s Studio 58, we were roommates together in the program and became fast friends … way back when,” says Johnston. “We used to be friends,” cracks Schwartz, as the pair laugh. “Obviously we work well together,” says Johnston. “I’m happy and proud of the way we share everything, but we’re still separate people with separate points of view, a separate sense of esthetics, separate ideas that come together to make something that would not exist otherwise.” “There’s a lot of conflict too,” Schwartz interjects. “Sometimes we argue,” Johnston agrees. “I think (theatre companies) get together because a group of friends agree on certain things, they have similar artistic sensibilities – that doesn’t mean you agree on everything – but after six years together we’ve built a way to work together,” says Schwartz. Two of the shows they’ve created will be featured at

FREJA MITCHELL PHOTO

Anthony Johnston in Revenge of the Popinjay.

Intrepid Theatre’s inaugural OUTstages, a celebration of theatre and queer culture presented following the festivities of Pride Week. OUTstages (July 5 to 12) includes play readings; a late night cabaret; The Femme Playlist; Let’s Not Beat Each Other To Death and AnimalParts’ A Quiet Sip of Coffee (Or, This Is Not The Play We’ve Written) and The Revenge Of The Popinjay. “We’re happy we’re coming for the festival,” says Johnston. “Nathan and I, so far, our body of work is just a few shows and some of our work definitely fits into the category of queer performance and obviously it touches on issues of sexual identity and everything

that’s part of the queer experience.” Revenge of the Popinjay is billed as an experimental rap-horror show in which Anthony struggles to cope with the loss of his sister while uncovering a frightening link between himself, his lover and an illusive gay rap star/serial killer targeting heterosexuals. Revenge of the Popinjay) is a bizarro theatrical “(Revenge biography. I am a gay man, a gay artist, in broad strokes it’s about the modern day queer journey or manifesto … it’s truth-telling onstage,” says Johnston. “Quiet Sip Of Coffee is about a gay-straight friendship and how that effects you. It’s about sex and youth and how stupid you are when you’re 21,” he adds with a laugh. “They’re very different,” adds Schwartz. “Super different,” Johnston says. “The thing people have in common when they see all our shows is they’re surprised and excited. They have different reactions to both shows.” “In terms of speaking to a queer audience at a queer theatre festival, it’s appropriate we keep in mind the queer community and also the arts community. It’s easy to pander to the audience: homophobia is bad. You can say that, but how do you make that interesting?” says Schwartz. “We push the boundaries. What are you afraid to feel? What are you afraid to notice? Afraid to remember or afraid to talk about? … I don’t know the answers,” says Johnston. “Some people say Popinjay goes too far, on the other hand, art is supposed to go too far.” Find out how far at intrepidtheatre.com.

Comedy comes out LAURA LAVIN editor@mondaymag.com Sometimes it pays to have a nagging spouse. Just ask Darcy Michael, who gives all the credit for his comedy career to his husband Jeremy. “When we got married I gave this off-the-cuff speech and my husband Jer he just kept nagging at me to try it.” Comedy was a natural progression for Michael. “I was always an ass, I guess,” he says. He went to Argyle Secondary School in North Vancouver and found a theatre program and inspirational teacher who motivated him. “He was just one of those teachers who stays with you. He provided an environment where you felt safe and secure but also pushed your artistic boundaries.” Nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award in 2010 for his appearance at the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, Michael’s career took off with his 2012 comedy special One Skinny Bitch. In 2014, he was a finalist in Sirius XM Canada’s Top Comic competition and received a second Canadian Comedy Award nomination as Best Breakout Artist. Last year, he was cast as a main character in CTV’s Spun Out with Dave Foley. “We just finished filming the second season in December but it’s been suspended indefinitely,” says Michael. On Jan. 26, his co-star J. P. Manoux was arrested on a voyeurism charge, the network put the show on hiatus indefinitely and pulled it from all CTV platforms, including online and on-demand. Now Michael is back home in Ladner catching up with housework. “I’m cleaning up cat litter – the glamour never ends,” he quips. His teenage daughter Grace just got a job at an aquarium and brought home some fish, he says. “I just spent half a day keeping the cats away from the fish. One, we call him Five Buck Chuck because he only cost $5, but I paid $180 for accessories – I’m pretty

sure he’s gay.” Grace is a gem, he adds. “She just got a boyfriend, so naturally I’m terrified every time I leave the house. I don’t want to be a grandfather before I’m 36 – but I’d never have to write a joke again.” He’s enjoying being home for a change as the comedy circuit keeps him on the road much of the time. “In July it’s my 10th anniversary and I still think ‘what the fuck am I doing?’ It’s a stupid existence, I get paid to talk about my Comedy at Pride feelings June 30 which is very easy Sugar Nightclub for me.” comedyatpride.com After “10 years of slinging gay jokes” he says acceptance is rarely an issue. “In high school, seriously, I was so fucking naive to what was going on around me. … I never questioned deeply who I was, I would just go with the flow. I was lucky. I had a super hot boyfriend, cool friends.” Michael usually “outs” himself during his routine. “I love to come out about halfway through my set and challenge everyone’s original thoughts on me. You can watch it change for some people. One lady, the second I came out she was done. Just done. I feel bad that people will let ignorance get in the way of having a good time.” In September he embarks on an across the US college tour. “I love our country. America scares the shit out of me. … I’ve worked hard in Canada, I love the people I’ve worked with, that I’d love to keep working with. Schitt’s Creek, have you seen it? Shows like that are rejuvenating Canadian TV, it’s done by the same people who did Spun Out. Some day I hope someone’s dumb enough to hire me so I can singlehandedly be responsible for the downfall of Canadian TV,” he says with a laugh.

Pride in their voices LAURA LAVIN editor@mondaymag.com

Lovers of spoken word will want to put this Pride Week event on their list of things to do this month. On July 4, 10 wordsmiths will take the stage at the Ambrosia Conference Centre to share their innermost feelings at Pride in the Word. Among the writers/performers is Erin Cotton, past Victoria Slam champion and quick-tongued poet. “I went to the Spoken Word Festival and it blew my mind wide open,” she says. “I wanted to keep doing it forever.” She became involved enough to become volunteer Erin Cotton coordinator with Tongues of Fire, a diverse poetry community committed to the art of spoken word and performance poetry among other forms of literature. “It’s surprising to people who have a certain idea of poetry being read in a monotone that puts half the crowd to sleep. This is very noisy, it’s a very loud show and the audience is loud too, mostly,” she says of the twice monthly spoken word open mic that includes feature performers. “It’s part ethos, part spoken word and slam with audience involvement. They yell at the judges and get involved in the jokes. There’s a lot of group rituals – it’s partly a cult,” she says. “Except with rules.” First rule: “Leave your hate at the gate.” “The audience loves it, just that you’re up there doing it. There’s nothing hateful, nothing obscene.” Cotton is looking forward to seeing Ivan Coyote at the, perhaps, more sedate Pride in the Word. Coyote is an award-winning author of 10 books, creator of four short films, and three CDs that combine storytelling with music. “Ivy Coyote is amazing, so good. The prom queen of storytelling performance Pride In The Word in Canada. It’s worth going just to see Ivan,” she says. July 4, 7-10pm Other performers include J. McLaughlin, Ali Blythe, victoriapride society. Arleen Paré, Michael V Smith, Alfred DePew, Nacho Rodriguez, Monique and Robin Stevenson. org

THE BIG PERSONALITY

James Gardner LAURA LAVIN editor@mondaymag.com

ecause he can now be true to himself, all things are more authentic, says James Gardner. “I always felt like I had a … filter so that anybody who got to know me, wasn’t getting to know me. And it wasn’t that I was consciously hiding anything but now I’m open, I’m genuine.” Unlike many people who have gender dysphoria, it took Gardner 50 years to come to the realization that he was in the wrong body. Born Sheila Gardner, in Edmonton in 1958, Gardner began her radio career at age 20. Moving from Alberta to Vancouver in 1987 and to CFAX radio in Victoria in 2010. “Most people do know when they’re younger that they’re transgender, but I didn’t. I just felt different, but I didn’t know what it was,” says the popular news announcer. It wasn’t until he was in his 50s that the realization dawned on him. “It was that feeling. I don’t know if I cried, it was a happy feeling. Oh. My. God. All of a sudden it just, it was like a bolt of lightning: This is who you are. “I didn’t know my name yet, I didn’t know who I was yet, but I just knew there was this part of me and I just embraced it.” He immediately acted on the realization, getting a referral to psychiatrist Gail Knudson, BC Medical Services Plan’s surgical assessor for gender-affirming surgeries. He began hormone treatment and the process of explaining to family, friends and coworkers what was happening. “Men transitioning to female, it’s more noticeable because the clothing’s different. As a female I didn’t wear dresses, but I wore a blouse and dress pants so I didn’t have to change that much. I always had short hair (taking) testosterone, you can actually lose your hair. Both my brothers are bald – I always liked my hair,” he says reaching up to touch his thinning, closely cropped scalp. He knew his voice would drop quickly with hormone treatment and as a radio personality, made sure he told his employer about the transformation. “It was definitely a milestone. … They were very respectful. It felt like I was Sheila one day and James the next – I didn’t really have to change the way I dressed too much except I put one of these on for the first time,” he says, tugging at the knot in his tie. “It was a milestone but I already felt like James.” A year later he started thinking about surgery. He began with a hysterectomy and just a few months later, traveled to Florida for top surgery, which included a double mastectomy. “I got tired of waiting,” he says with a sigh. At the time there was a two year wait list to get the surgery in BC. Living as a transgender man gives him freedom and happiness he never felt before. “It’s just a whole lightness. There was a heaviness before and I guess that’s what allows me to do the advocacy. I don’t know if I could have done it before when I felt really crappy, and I didn’t know why I felt crappy. I just always had this heaviness, something wasn’t right. Then it was like all the pieces of the puzzle come together. They’re all scattered on the table through your life, then all of a sudden they start to fit and that’s got to feel good. Everything just kind of snaps into place.” Making the decision to transition, begin hormones and have the chest surgery helped him feel more aligned with himself, he says. The next step, phalloplasty, surgical construction of a penis, has been more difficult. Read more about started hearing for bottom surgery Gardner at his blog for“Iguys (the wait) was anywhere up to Journey to James 10 years,” he says, stress creeping into his voice. transitionalmale. der confirming surgery until 2012 and then, restricted it to five per year. “I have my ear on the pipeline,” says Gardner, growing more animated. “I knew no guys were going. No guys were being phoned up. I know most of the guys on the waiting list – that’s when the government said, ‘nobody came forward.’” Two years after the BC Ministry of Health lifted a ban on “gender alignment” surgery to transform females to males, not one surgery had been funded by the Medical Services Plan.

urgent concerns, including reducing wait times for assessments and increasing options for access to (bottom) surgeries and coverage of after-care costs in Montreal. “I think the fire’s been lit, I don’t know if there’s anything more we can do,” says Gardner. “People just need to know we’re fighting our own fight physically with our own bodies. We’re trying to get our own bodies to a point where we’re happy with ourselves. It’s very hard for us to step outside of that and have to deal with the larger picture.”

“When I came to grips with who I was and I came out as a transgendered person, everything just fell into place. … As much as there’s this fight, fight, fight, there’s the other side of it, things are becoming easier as well.” - James Gardner “Now I’m stuck again. I’m stuck not finishing with my physical transition,” he says. Although the cap on the number of surgeries the province will fund was recently removed and jurisdiction over the surgery has moved to the Provincial Health Service, Gardner says there are still close to 90 people waiting for a date with the one Canadian, Montreal-based Dr. Pierre Brassard, qualified to do the surgery. Gardner recently received a letter referring him to Bressard and in May he travelled to Montreal for his first consultation. He was able to afford the flights and accommodations, but learned the surgery is done in four stages, which means four more trips across the country and expensive after-care – none of which is paid for by the province. He estimates his personal cost will be $10,000 and he’s pushing to have the government cover those costs for BC residents requiring the surgery. Gardner recently received an email from the BC Ministry of Health confirming a steering committee has been established to address

A recent study by researchers at Western University in London, Ont. found one in 167 Canadians try to kill themselves, but for transgender people the rate is an astounding one in nine. “I’ve struggled with depression because I can’t get my surgeries. I’ve thought about suicide. I think about it. Sometimes I get to the point where I just want to give up. “What keeps me going? Talking about it. Talking about the injustice,” he says, pushing his shoulders back. “The spark of advocacy is there now, which I never had before. Something that I’m very passionate about is getting this right. Getting this right so that (younger) people … don’t have to deal with all of this crap. That’s what keeps me going.” He feels that completing a medical transition through surgery will alleviate the depression. “I have a lot of hope. I think it’s just going to take a year or so to get the machine moving. I think within about a year – maybe two – it’ll be where it needs to be. It’s just, you know … waiting.” mondaymag.com MONDAY MAGAZINE JULY 2015

neighbourhood. The videographer decided to approach a street we’d driven down before from a different direction. We saw a 1973 muscle car we ADAM SAWATSKY hadn’t noticed before, although @CTVNewsAdam it had been parked on Summit Avenue for the past four years. The vehicle was occupied by large stuffed animals. Wile E. Coyotes to be exact. One was sitting in the driver seat, its furry hands clutched to the wheel. Another was in the passenger seat. The Looney Tunes lot also included a bunch of Road Runners and a Marvin the Martian floor mat. We spoke with people passing by. Some of them said they make an effort to see the car daily because “it’s good for a giggle and we need more giggles in this world.” Nobody knew whose car it was. So we started knocking on doors in the neighbourhood until we met Mike. He told us he filled his car with furry animals for just one reason, “it seems to put a smile on people’s faces. I just think it’s really important to put more positive energy out in the world.” And that’s how driving along in a different direction allowed us to meet two people engaging with their streets in a different way. Adam Sawatsky is co-host of CTV News Vancouver Island at Five. On weekends, he hosts ‘Eye on the Arts’ on CFAX 1070.

ans still drive the members of Aerosmith says bassist Tom Hamilton. “We have this strong connection with people that are fans, no matter what country they’re in,” he says. “We have this really strong emotional connection over this music. You’re in this big room with a bunch of people all hearing the same song and enjoying it and you have this feeling of being close to all these people even though you don’t have any physical contact with them.” The band’s Blue Army Tour – a nod to its fans – just got underway and comes to Victoria July 16 at SaveOn-Foods Memorial Centre. “It brings to mind when we used to tour the midwest of the United States years and years to get our name out there and get the band going the way we wanted it,” Hamilton explains. “We would get to the venue and driving through the parking lot there’d be a huge line of people with denim jackets on and blue jeans and right away we said ‘look it’s a blue army’ so we’ve been using that term with each other to describe our fans ever since then.” Hamilton, a founding member of the band that celebrates the 40th anniversary of the release of its Toys in the Attic album this year, co-wrote Sweet Emotion – one of the group’s iconic hits. “We’re really fortunate that we’ve been able to accumulate all these songs along the way. When we put together a set list we have to struggle to fit in all the songs we’d like the Aerosmith in Victoria July 16 audience to hear. It’s almost impossisofmc.com ble to do that in that

hour and 45 minutes we play. “We start rehearsing by bringing a blackboard into the room and bringing all of these songs in – it’s comical watching everybody trying to figure out how to narrow it down to a set list, but we do it.” Fans can expect to hear old favourites as well as some of the tunes they’ve written in recent decades. “I would never consider the idea of not playing Sweet Emotion or Dream On or Walk This Way, for instance, I mean they have to be there. Period. And there’s a group of other songs that came along over the years after that we really love to be in there. Songs like Living on the Edge for instance … there are a lot of times in the set where we can switch songs around and we are going to be doing that this summer. People that come to see us who have seen us in the last few years might see some similarities in the flow there but they’re also going to have some surprises. It makes it fun for everybody – including us.” American rock royalty, Aerosmith has sold more than 150 million albums and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are the recipients of four Grammys, eight American Music Awards, six Billboard Awards and 12 MTV Video Music Awards, among others. Yet, it’s still the audience that keeps them going, and meeting fans backstage is one of his favourite parts of the gig, says Hamilton. “Those moments are really cool because these people are so damn excited and flipped out that they’re back there and doing that, it’s raw enthusiasm that you can drag off of them and put in your back pocket for the show. “

Scott Helman: the next big thing LAURA LAVIN

Scott Helman’s life is “all good.” The teen’s speech is peppered with the phrase, punctuated with “like, you know?” and “awesome” but beyond the teen-speak is an artist with something to say about today’s music and keeping it real. As we chat on the phone, Helman is eating sushi at a Toronto restaurant after spending the morning rehearsing for the Much Music Video Awards. A Much blogpost reports the 19-year-old singer, who released his breakout EP Augusta with Warner Canada last November, “looked like a seasoned pro” and pronounced him “swoon-worthy.” Although he’s young, Helman has years of practice under his belt, he started playing guitar at age 10 and was posting YouTube videos of his efforts at 13. Execs at Warner Music Canada took note and brought him in for a face-to-face. “They put me in front of a mic and I played my songs for the guys at Warner and it kinda just went from there,” he says easily. “It was an Amos Lee cover called Arms of a Woman. It’s a super old song that I should not have been playing at that age, but I liked it.” When he got his guitar, his dad told him he had to learn Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd. “I was like what? I ended up checking out all these bands and realized how far art could go and how important art was.” His influences include Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon album, Bob Marley Rock The Shores and The Beatles. July 18 & 19 “When I got a bit older, rocktheshores. like 14, 15 – angsty age – I was really into Nirvana com

and all that, Smashing Pumpkins, Sum 41, like, when you’re 14 and you think you’re right about everything.” These days he absorbs all the music he can. “I think it’s a really interesting time for pop music. You can have Ariana Grande and you can also have Ed Sheeran and Jake Bugg – there’s artists on the radio who’ve just come out of nowhere and they’re just amazing, so I like everything as long as it has value and it’s honest and I think I can relate to it. I think all music has a function. There’s no need to bash anybody.”

When I’m playing a song and I see people singing along, I realize that they’re listening to Bungalow or Machine or Tikka or something and they’re like, ‘wow I see all these images from my childhood or my lover or my friends or my family,’ so the song is the property of them and it’s their ideas they put on top of your ideas.” He cut his teeth with a live performance at a school assembly in front of about 600 of his peers. “People didn’t know I was a singer or did music,” he says. “I liked going up there and being like, ‘hey, you know, check this out.’ It was really special – it was scary as hell but it was cool, you know, to be able to share the things you make.” His summer will be full of sharing the songs he’s written as he performs at several music festivals across the country including Colwood’s Rock the Shores on July 18. “I love performing at those things, they’re outdoors they’re beautiful, everybody’s having a good time. … I really like performing with my buddies, we just have a fun time.” It’s his friends that keep Helman and his music honest, he says. “I see my friends when I’m back in Toronto. There’s no like ‘how’re you doing …’ it’s like ‘alright, let’s do it, let’s hang out.’ It’s great, they’re awesome. That stuff is the best for me, hanging out, girls also help,” he says with a laugh. “Just having a bonfire and hanging out, I’m sure three songs will come out of that.”

Monday editor Laura Lavin watches as Brian Dunic lifts a trap filled with Dungeness crabs out of the water.

here’s no better view of Vancouver Island than one looking over a 200-hp outboard, framed by two fishing poles. As the Tulista boat ramp in Sidney quickly shrinks in the distance, my captain Brian Dunic heads the boat towards nearby Sidney Spit. Our two-mile journey on the C Pony, his 21-foot pleasure craft, doesn’t take long and we’re quickly in the waters just off the spit. Dunic uses his GPS to find just the right depth and idles the engine. “You ready?’ he asks. Heck yeah, I’m ready. On the back of the boat three cages are stacked. Dunic reaches into a bucket and pulls out the spine and tail of a salmon and stuffs it into a small basket he hangs inside the trap. “I use salmon or halibut for bait. Some people use chicken backs,” he says. He closes the cage and tosses it into the water. Line tied to the top feeds out until only a small colourful buoy is visible floating on the surface. He heads back to the wheel and moves the boat some 20 yards away. Back at the stern, he reaches into the bucket: “Your turn,” he says, holding out a large, decapitated fish head. Time to man-up, I think to myself, as I reach out and take the slippery chunk which seems to eye me suspiciously. Into the small net it goes with another bit of salmon remnant. I hook up the basket and drop it overboard. More photos and Now, we’re crab fishing. One more trap goes video online down to the apparently mondaymag.com sandy bottom, some 30 feet below us.

SIZE MATTERS To keep your catch, Dungeness crab must be male and at least 165 mm (6.5 inches) measured across the widest part of the shell. Traps must also have a section that has been secured by a single length of untreated cotton twine no thicker than approximately 5 mm (3/16 inch) diameter, called rot cord which allows crab to escape if the trap is lost. Each person with a license is allowed to use two traps and can keep a maximum of four crab per day. There are crab all over the waters surrounding Greater Victoria Dunic, president of the Sidney Anglers Association, tells me. Close to shore, you’ll find red rock crab, but out here, we’ll find the slightly larger Dungeness. Fishing for crab off the dock is the same procedure, Dunic says, all you need is a trap, some chicken or fish for bait, a fishing license and cooler to put your catch in. An old towel to wipe your fishy hands on is nice too, I discover. After the traps are down, we head to the spit for a walk. This morning there are a few people milling about. As we walk toward the campground, a troop of Girl Guides is coming out of the woods after a night of s’mores and singing. The island is a pretty spot with plenty of beach and walking trails. He points to a small pond, several fluffy goslings teeter around its banks. In the fall, he says, the deer are as thick as the trees in this area. Heading back to the C Pony, we watch as a dozen

or so day trippers climb off the ferry, packs on their backs, frisbees and small beach chairs in hand. We climb aboard the boat, snap our lifejackets back on and head back out on the water. It’s only been roughly 45 minutes since we dropped the traps, but it can take as little as 20 minutes to have success. Snagging the traps is relatively easy. We approach the floats and reach out with a hook to grab the line, the traps are easy to lift on their own, but Dunic also has a small wheel attached to the edge of his boat to add leverage. The first trap contains nine crab, two of which are large enough to keep. We check the other traps and end up with four in the cooler. We reset the traps and head east of Sidney Spit for some sight seeing. Dunic steers the boat to Mandarte Island. It’s a large rock covered on one side by nesting seagulls and on the other by a nesting colony of cormorants. On the water and flying to and fro are pigeon guillemot, a species of bird in the auk family. The sea air is refreshing and watching these wild birds build their nests is a rare treat. We circle back close to the end of the spit and Dunic hands me the wheel after changing over to a smaller motor called a kicker. We putter around in a wide circle as he drops two lines in the water for salmon. We have no luck with the fish, so head back to the crab traps. After pulling them all up, we have seven Dungeness and one red rock crab for our efforts. Again he hands me the wheel and this time I get to hit the throttle and make some waves on the way back to shore. Instagram: chantalireland Facebook: SmileAtChantalIreland ourists are here, the sun is shining and the patios are full. It’s great to have a place for a snack or meal you can duck into, or send visiting family and friends that you know will delight and surprise. Finding new places that aren’t always top of mind is always fun. Nourish Kitchen & Cafe (a hidden gem at 505 Quayle Rd, at The Gardens at HCP) has opened Nourish in the Harbour at 225 Quebec St in James Bay. They’ve been hard at work converting an old building into a bright space for dining, gathering and raising a glass to all things local. Both are amazing spots for brunch, lunch and coffee. Everything is made from scratch with whole ingredients. Try the Benny’s Gone Nuts. It’s vegetarian, but your meat eating friends can add bacon. Northern Quarter Kitchen & Stage at 1724 Douglas St opened to showcase local performers, wines by the glass, craft beer, cocktails, and seasonal food items. On Pender Island, a new resort

Find your flavour and kitchen has opened, WOODS on Pender. Think island rosé and local food on a patio in the woods. Enjoy the company of fellow city folks in search of nature’s respite, with a weekend in a refurbished Airstream. The Marina Cafe in Oak Bay, 1327 Beach Dr, has become Marina Dockside Eatery, with a renovation, new patio furniture and menu items, they now serve local Caffe Fantastico coffee and Silk Road Teas. Oceanfront, casual, and one of the best hidden patios in the city. While hardly anyone would call Zambri’s, 820 Yates St, a hidden gem, their brunch seems to be a bit of a secret. Most dishes $12 - $14, the meatballs on polenta is my favourite. Crispy polenta and house-made meatballs, topped with poached eggs and tomato sauce, have a glass of prosecco for a great Sunday morning. Brunch is served inside and out, Sundays 10:30am - 2:30pm. Ça Va Bistro Moderne in Fernwood is tucked into a romantic French-inspired space with a kitchen that focuses on

GOURMET GRAZING Now in it’s 18th year, Vancouver Island Feast of Fields is one of BC’s longest standing local food celebrations. This four hour wandering gourmet harvest festival highlights the connections between farmers and

chefs, field and table and between farm folks and city folks. With a wine glass and linen napkin in hand, guests stroll across a farmers field, traveling from tent to tent (sometimes through the barn, past the tractor or around the chicken coup), listening to live music, and

affordable fine dining paired with a BC and international wine list. Dinner $13 - $28 is served 5pm - 9pm Tuesday - Sunday. In View Royal, Crooked Goose Bistro at 4136 Wilkinson Rd (sister restaurant to Heron Rock Bistro in James Bay), offers brunch, daily features, live music, and works with local purveyors of food and drink you don’t have to head downtown for. Fresh Coast Health Food Bar in Saanich has smoothies, cold pressed juices, salads and wraps in their 202 - 3749 Shelbourne Street location, and their new food truck usually found in the Capital Iron Parking lot. t’s summertime and a pleasant diversion can be a short drive in the countryside with a lovely deck as a destination point. The Saanich Peninsula entices with farm stands loaded with veggies and the Brentwood Bay Lodge. The Lodge has two restaurants, a pub and a main dining room. Oddly the dining room is called, in what must have been a moment of sheer unoriginality, Dining Room. In counterpoint to the Dining Room – empty when we arrived and departed – was the lively pub. The deck was bathed in sunlight with swaths of shade for those watching their complexions and most tables viewed a slice of the Malahat, boats and water. The cocktail menu is divided into Classics, Signature Caesars, Frozen Drinks, Martinis – Classic and Premium. While I was intrigued by three takes on the Caesar, I know that I’ve mentioned my weakness for this great brunch drink too many times already. I’m certainly interested in heading back to try the Carnius Flavius Maximus with all its beef jerky and blue-cheesestuffed-olive glorious-ness. Back to the evening at hand the cocktail order went to the Old Fashioned and the Long Island Iced Tea. The Tea is not a usual for me but since it’s a summer sipper I thought, “why not?” Neither drink was mixed properly as my first sip of Old Fashioned was pure Bulleit Bourbon. This drink is all about the building of the cocktail – stir, stir, stir. The tea offered up a mouthful of Coke. I will keep Brentwood on my list for the ambience, price, wings and Caesars during our gorgeous summer.

Get up and go for a ROMP! The summer, to me, is all about getting outside, and there’s nothing better than combining a love of the arts and performance with an outdoor venue. Residents of the capital region are spoiled with a wide range of options to choose from – whether under the Garry Oaks at Camosun College for Shakespeare, or close to the water at Fisherman’s Wharf for yoga and dance, motoring (by a variety of means) along the Galloping Goose for mini-shows at SKAMPEDE (formerly Bike Ride) or sitting under the vines at Muse Winery for ballet or musical theatre – why not plan on investigating a new spot this year? Start the month with #LashBash, a fundraiser for Broken Rhythms Dance, July 4. This company is wellknown for the extravagant false eyelashes they wear during their shows and promotions, and has decided to capitalize on this signature accoutrement. Shopping for a swimsuit is no easy feat and I am pretty sure that the majority of women avoid it every year – including me. It can be a challenge finding a swimsuit to fit your body type as well as being on trend. I prefer to go to smaller boutiques like Paradise Boutique when it comes to buying swimwear because the staff are hands on and make sure that you find a swimsuit that is figure flattering and suits your taste. Swimwear trends for the summer of 2015 are very versatile with a wide variety of looks for all ages and body types. This year there is everything under the sun from retro 1950s inspired swimwear all the way to the bohemian 1970s look straight through to the 1990s with crop tops. The days of the plain string bikini are long gone and swimwear has evolved to adapt the current fashion and street style trends straight from the runways. Here is a list of my top ten swimwear trends for summer 2015. Printed Swimwear: 3D and photo prints are hugely popular on swimwear this summer. abinet door hardware is like jewelry to your kitchen or bathroom cabinets. If the necklace doesn’t match the outfit, it can ruin the whole look! It’s so important to take your time when choosing door hardware. With all the money that is spent on a kitchen renovation, the final wow factor can be less than stellar if the wrong pulls are chosen. People often forget to budget in or under-budget for cabinet hardware. Pulls and knobs can run from $5 to $250 each. Victoria Specialty Hardware at 477 Boleskin Rd. has Victoria’s greatest selection of cabinet door hardware. There are thousands of pulls and knobs to choose from with thousands more available in their supplier’s catalogs. It’s such a fun place to go and browse for any conceivable style, finish, size, and shape. Their staff has years of knowledge in all decorative, architectural and designer hardware. They carry close to 45 different suppliers of door hardware, so if it’s available, they have it. I found this great block design pull (shown, right), which comes in six finishes starting at $22.95 each. Awesome for a flat slab door. Richelieu Hardware, 616 Hillside Ave. is local supplier to the trade only. The public is welcome to go in and look at their selection, but they have to purchase from a retailer. Locally, Slegg Lumber or The Cook Street DO It Centre carry their products or can order it. Richelieu is a Canadian company which offers a huge selection of knobs and pulls, their web site is easy to navigate for choices as well. I spotted these iron look pulls (above) in different shapes and instantly loved them. They range from $15-$50. Remember to have fun with your pulls and knobs, you can always replace them in few years and get a whole new look. Sheri Peterson has been an interior designer for 22 years in Victoria. Having just been hauled by her parents from the folksy Midwest to hipster San Francisco, poor Riley is beset by many challenges as she adjusts to a new school, new people, and a very empty house (the moving truck with all their furniture and clothing has been delayed). Playing at The Vic Theatre. Reminder: Cinecenta is closed for renos from July 19 to Aug 3, then it will be more great films on the horizon.

Hot season on HBO

T

his is going to be an HBO-centric column this month, just to warn you. I’ll get to a few other things below, but there are a number of exciting new shows starting up on our favourite home box office, and I thought you might care to know about them. First up is Ballers, which I should only have to say one thing to sell you on: The Rock. That’s right, everyone’s favourite wrestler-turned-movie star is coming to the small screen, in this show about football agents. And if The Rock didn’t sell you, maybe the fact this show combines football and Peter Berg will. Berg, of course, is the man behind Friday Night Lights, and he is producing this show and directed the pilot. Touchdown. Premiering the same night, June 21, is The Brink, with Tim Robbins, Jack Black and Pablo Schreiber. This self-described dark comedy focuses on a geopolitical crisis and its effects on three men at different levels of the trouble. HBO does political comedy well, if Veep is any indication, and considering the cast and premise, this one has me intrigued. And, of course, drumroll please, this very same date, June 21, marks the return of the much beloved True Detective, the premiere season of which last year, starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, blew many a mind. Being an anthology, this season has an all-new story, all-new characters, and same dark tone, I assume. It has an interesting cast, with Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn, and I’m looking forward to seeing if the new season can match the first’s ambition. Finally, tune in to HBO on July 11 for 7 Days in Hell. I don’t know much about it, there’s no trailer, but I can tell you it stars Andy Samberg and Kit Harington as pro tennis players, and also features Lena Dunham, Will Forte, Fred Armisen and Michael Sheen. That’s one hell of a cast. OK, that’s it for HBO. But we’re not done yet: Rectify, one of my personal favourites, starts its third season on July 9 on Sundance Channel. I’ll have to wait until it’s on Netflix, but that doesn’t usually take long. If you haven’t had a chance to see this tense and beautifully paced drama, I highly recommend you catch up on the first two seasons. Key and Peele return to Comedy Central on July 8, which is good news for fans of one of the best sketch comedy shows on television (along with other Comedy Central treasure Amy Schumer). And finally, The Spoils Before Dying, a six-part comedy mini-series starring Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Val Kilmer, Maya Rudolph and many more, premieres July 8 on IFC.

Your stars for JULY 2015 worth. If you’re rich – you feel good. If you’re broke, you feel like navel lint. Don’t do this because life is precious and you are not measured by your bank account. What really counts is your car and where you eat.

horoscope ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

You will swing your focus to home, family CANCER and your private life this month. You Georgia Nicols (JUNE 21-JULY 22) might want to cocoon at home; or you This month the Sun in your sign makes you feel might tackle home repairs, redecorating projects energized! This is your chance to recharge your and even renovations. Some will become more batteries for the rest of the year. The Sun also attract involved with family members, especially a parent. favourable circumstances to you. You’re a winner! And because fiery Mars enters the picture on Wednesday, June 24, you will also have to be patient You project your personality with greater force and make a strong impression on others. You’ll have a with family members to avoid arguments. And there great need to express yourself. Lots of activity will you have it. take place in your life, which, in turn, will give you a chance to show the world what you can do.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

This month the tempo of your daily schedule will speed up because of the demands you suddenly face. Short trips are a given. Plan for this. In addition, you will be busy talking and communicating to others, especially siblings and relatives. You’ll also be busy with errands and have an ambitious To Do list. Many of you will write or read and study more than usual as well. In a nutshell, you’ll be busier than a one-armed paper hanger, and very vocal, if not strident with others. ‘Move that mountain!’ ‘Build that bridge!’

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

This month your focus is on money, cash flow and your possessions. This could be because you are looking for a job or making a major purchase. You might focus on your possessions, cleaning, repairing or maintaining something. All this focus on money will make you equate your assets with your self-

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

You will withdraw from the busyness of everything around you this month because you’ll be in planning mode. That’s because next month, the Sun will enter your sign, and you will present yourself to the world in full dazzle. Ta da! Use the month ahead to plan what you want your new year (birthday to birthday) to be all about. People who plan and set goals always achieve more. And of course, there’s Ted Turner’s advice: ‘Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise.’

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Start scanning your closet for snappy duds because your popularity rating will soar this month. Invitations for fun times will pour in; and interactions with others be based on fun times, dinners, lunches, get-togethers and parties. Your increased interaction with other will also be due to classes, sports events,

meetings, conferences and conventions. Yes, you’ll be schmoozing! The important thing to know is that all these exchanges can benefit you.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Holy VIP! This is the only time all year that the Sun is at the top of your chart casting a flattering spotlight on you. People in authority will notice you and ask you to take on a special job or increased responsibilities. Say yes because you won’t have to do anything special to dazzle them. Meanwhile, you’re up for this because Mars now arouses your ambition, the most it’s been aroused in two years. Just when you decide to reach for the brass ring, someone wants to offer it to you.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Keep a bag packed by the door because you’re going places this month. You want to broaden your horizons through travel, study, learning from books and film, and interacting with people from different countries and cultures. You’ll be bored with your routine. You want change! Stimulation! Adventure! You want to learn something new. Yeats said, ‘Education is not filling the bucket, it’s lighting a fire!’

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

This month is intense and passionate. You want to experience life at a gut level, not just as an intellectual abstraction. You want the nitty-gritty. You can also expect to be more involved with shared property, debt, taxes, inheritances and insurance issues. You might also feel challenged by someone. There could be disputes about shared property or inheritances. Confucius said, ‘Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.’ (The butler Alfred said that, too.)

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

This month, the Sun is 180∞ opposite your sign, which is the only time all year this happens. Because the Sun is your source of energy, and it is now as far away from you as it gets all year, you will be tired. Discover the power nap. You might also be at odds with someone close to you. They annoy you! Could it be that you are wearing different glasses and seeing things from a different point of view? So much depends on attitude. Remember: Once the game is over, the king and the pawn go back in the same box.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

You’ll get a lot done this month because you want to productive, efficient and effective. You’re keen to be better organized and start each day with a To Do list. This desire for high standards will include thoughts about your health. Focus on a new exercise regime or explore a new way of eating. Basically, you are on self-improvement kick, which is excellent. These two planets will also highlight your focus on small pets as well. Woof!

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Oh joy! Life will be exciting and romantic because for the first time in almost a year the Sun wants you to play! In the next four weeks, love affairs, romantic interludes and flirtatious téte-á-téte’s will thrill you. Beyond romance, your social life will be stimulated with fun invitations, picnics, barbecues, sports events, musical performances, the theatre, the arts and playful activities with children. And you will want to express your creative talents. Grab every chance to do this.
